Finally tested in the Sundown Kid’s chapter of Live-A-Live, just saying “…” when Billy asks Sundown if he’s afraid and I can’t get Mad Dog’s response out of my head.

I found it cute that the first time I did this (I believe Billy asks a similar question twice, I’m curious if I actually reply to the second one but not the first what Mad Dog will do) Mad Dog said, and I quote: “No need to worry. He’s got me watching his back, remember?” Which I love because it is both endearing and very cocky of him, as Mad Dog is prone to be.

But what really gets me thinking is how, if Sundown shows hesitation to Billy’s second question (something like are you ready?) Mad Dog will almost run away from the fight entirely. And it really makes me think if Sundown’s hesitation is all Mad Dog needs to go: yep I’m out of here. He definitely does not believe in himself (ok fine, maybe a given) and he believes in Sundown way more.

Since I’m sort of constantly thinking about these gay cowboys I now want to make more observations based off of this very interesting thought. So now my question stands, if Mad Dog deep down knows Sundown is a better gunslinger than him, why persist? I think the obvious answer is: pride, maybe he started this fight and refuses to acknowledge he can’t finish it, he finds a way to blame it on Sundown. But then at the same time we know Mad Dog really has no issue with Sundown killing him, I think it comes back to his pride that Sundown has both beaten him on many occasions and has yet to kill him. I think obviously Mad Dog puts up this extreme facade around everyone else but it makes me wonder if knowing that Sundown has already seen him at his lowest makes him less afraid to drop the act around him. Not entirely, of course, I doubt Mad Dog ever could. I just find it revealing that Mad Dog would rather be a coward than not be able to lean on Sundown—is that not fascinating??! Especially because Mad Dog has never struck me as the type to run away from a fight he thinks he will lose, but now I’m thinking that philosophy only applies to Sundown. Which again brings me to the question: why?? If I go a step further and assume Mad Dog has lost some fights before yet he doesn’t go chasing after them, why is Sundown different and has he always been different? I think my first answer is obviously: gay. Lol, but I want to know if it was always that way, Mad Dog in denial that he has a crush on the mysterious outlaw and building up the excuse that only he can turn Sundown in or that Sundown and he have to have a true final showdown. I also just desperately want to know more about their background and how they first met. *sighs in fanfic writer brain being blocked up by school. But lol I’m just really analyzing these two probably way too much.

Blood Blossom Au: Baby's First Commissioner Meeting :)

TL:DR This Post: Danny (orphan) gets poisoned with blood blossom extract by Vlad. He runs away from him and ends up under the care of one Pre-Robin Battinson Batman! Starry is loudly pushing her batdad agenda.

This was a fun rough idea I've been sitting on for weeks, thinking about how Commissioner Gordon and Nightingale's first meeting might go.

Commissioner Gordon likes to think that he's adjusting to the new normal of Gotham very well, -- the new normal being grown men running around dressed like bats, in military-grade strength body armor, committing acts of vigilantism, -- and slowly, little by little, he was no longer being surprised when this new normal pops up out of the shadows like the world's most terrifying daisy. His shaving lifespan thanks him for it.

The kid is a surprise though.

Granted, he seemed to be a surprise to the Bat too.

There's been a string of murders lately, -- which, in Gotham, is kind of like saying there's been another storm during monsoon season. And there's just been another; in some dilapidated building down in south Gotham, with the broken, boarded-up windows and mildew-crawling walls to match. The victim is a man in his thirties, multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, left in the center of the room for the blood to pool out around him.

The place is already secured when he arrives, the building swarmed with officers and the forensic detectives. The Bat emerges shortly after he does -- or, he might've been here the whole time, hiding someplace dark and shadowy. For his own sanity, Gordon doesn't think about it too hard.

The kid is a surprise, and he appears like a bolt of lightning.

He shows up in the middle of a conversation Gordon is having with the Bat.

A whistle, sharp and loud, slicing through the air, meant for open air rather than a confined space. Gordon's ears pierce and protest the sound, and the solemn, murmured chatter floating through the room abruptly cuts off like the swing of a gavel. As he turns towards the sound -- as they all do -- he swears, up and down, that he sees Batman's shoulders jump, just slightly.

At the source, perched on the window, is a boy. A boy in a gray-blue scarf and an oversized black hoodie, one that hangs off his frame and has ace bandages wrapped around the wrists in some attempt to cinch the sleeves. The hood is up, big like the rest of it, and threatens to swallow the upper half of the boy's face whole in the fabric. What upper half Gordon can see, is smeared with some kind of opaque, black face paint. He's holding onto the side of the frame with one hand, on his hip is a grappling hook. A familiar grappling hook.

Gordon has multiple questions, and his officers tense up.

Martinez puffs up, brows furrowing as his face shapes into a frown. Shoulders rolling back. "You can't be here, kid--"

The reaction is immediate, like a spark to gunpowder, the boy yanks his fingers from his mouth and his mouth twists into a scowl. Head snapping over to Officer Martinez, his hood manages to stay on but Gordon swears that as he bares his teeth, the glint makes them look sharper than they should be. His voice is rasp and quiet and harsh; snappish in its hissing; "Put a fuckin sock in it, Martinez. I'm not stayin."

Martinez reels back, and the boy immediately veers his attention off him. Like a switch, his demeanor drops. Despite half his face being covered, his mouth twists into a cringing, apologetic smile. Slanted and off-beat, embarrassed. It'd be disarming if this wasn't Gotham, and if he didn't just hiss at Martinez like he was about to bite his head off.

"Sorry." He whispers, voice deceptively polite and softer now. Gordon has to strain his ears to hear him. "I was looking for him."

He points his finger towards-- Gordon? No, Gordon follows the direction, and finds himself looking at -- the Bat.

The Bat, who always looks stiff as a pole, now looks even stiffer. Somehow. Well, the explains the grappling hook attached to the boy's waist.

"What are you doing here?" The Bat says, gruff and unable to completely smother the stumble of surprise in his tone.

The boy still holds a sheepish smile, and slips off the window ledge. His feet hit the creaky boards with a near-silent thud, the Batman finds his feet and rapidly begins crossing the room.

Gordon notes the slight tremble in the boy's legs as he straightens. He adjusts his scarf, which droops close to his knees now that he's standing, and slings a backpack -- how long has had that? -- off his shoulders. When the Bat reaches his side, he does as he always does, and looms over the boy like a spectre. A threatening mass of shadows cloaked in all-consuming black. Standing next to him, the boy looks teeny in comparison.

The Bat is a man who terrifies even the most hardened criminals, Gordon has seen grown men shiver in fear at the mention of his name. And yet when the boy looks up at him, he doesn't even flinch.

Instead, his sheepish smile melts away like ice under the sun, holding only traces of his previous embarrassment. It remains as a shadow on his face, a small upturn at the corners of his mouth. The boy pushes his hood back just enough to reveal glinting, ice-flint eyes surrounded in tar-black face paint. He holds the backpack up with one arm. "You forgot this."

Day Seven: Love Language

People who really like shuake also seem to write themselves into a corner wrt Akechi and his relationship to Akiras team. Contrary to popular belief, the team, including Haru, does not hate Akechi. At worst, they tolerate him and deal with his attitude. Hes a good teammate and respectable fighter and the team recognizes that at the end of the day, he was a teenager who was manipulated and abused by a man who saw him as disposable. Just about every thief understands this intimately. They have the same mindset wrt adults who take advantage of the people beneath them. Under different circumstances they wouldve been friends. And if u approach it from that angle, it becomes less about Akechi being the sole person who ‘gets’ Akira, and more about the thieves being the only people in the world who ‘get’ Akechi.

When you expand your thoughts to include the thieves as members of his Team and not roadblocks that get in the way of your ideal shipping dynamic, you allow urself to give Akechi and Akira more depth and nuance to their own relationship.

Akira and Akechi are wildcards; both of them struggle with the face they choose to display to the world. Its the first time Akira interacts with someone who is, at a literal, technical level, his ‘equal’. But Akechi is one of many firsts for Akira yeah? Every thief has their bond with Akira thats completely unique and personal. Akechi will never be the person who witnesses Akiras Awakening, hes never the person who watches Akira have his restless nights alone in the attic, and hes never the person who realizes in real time that the teenager hes housing is just Some Kid, not the delinquent hes been warned about. Hes not Ann or Yusuke, or any of the thieves; he doesnt have the time or experience that they have with Akira, and I think its interesting to explore that part of their relationship, shippy or not.

Akechi is someone who is incredibly lonely and self depreciating despite his cockiness and attitude. He has no positive bonds to speak of save for his connection with Sae. To have him see a team that works together and cares for each other, how do you think he would feel? Out of place? Inferior in some way? Angry about how hes been alone for so long in this single minded quest for revenge? Wouldnt that be a point of struggle between the two of them? I think what makes shuake good for me is knowing that Akechi needs alot of time to heal, and the thieves would want to help with that process. They do it bc they care, bc Akira cares, and bc they trust Akiras opinion (and he trusts theirs in return); if Akira feels like Akechi is someone who can be trusted Now after everything thats happened, then the thieves would do their best to help. And how would Akechi feel about that? Angry about the show of pity? That even now, he has no real say in what happens to him? Or begrudgingly grateful that they are cordial with him? Because they do care, he KNOWS they care, they care TOO MUCH actually; but the one thing he values over brawn and wits is honesty- fighting for what you believe in without having to use soft words to justify it.

hey!!! this is less of an ask and more of a fic rec tbh 😭 but have you read 'I May be Invisible, but I Still Look Good" by Dandy over on Ao3???? It's after the movie AND Leo-centric and like he gets cursed so his spirit is ripped out of his body. It's like 125k words of wonderful storytelling

ANYWAY YES I HAVE read this and I absolutely love it with every fiber of my being.❤️ 100% one of my top fics to read in this fandom that I even go back to for a reread more than once. The characters are perfectly done and the set up for the story is believable with a fantastic payoff, highly highly highly recommend to anyone who hasn’t read it yet.❤️

As for recs, I’ve always been terrible at giving recs since my memory is very bad especially for ones I haven’t read in a while.😭 Off the top of my head I can recommend (note these are practically entirely Leo-centric since he’s my special guy you understand (the others aren’t forgotten at all though!!!) - and most of these are very very well known so you’ve likely already read them…):

- The Neon Void by sugarpastels is absolutely incredible, the dramatic irony of it all as we follow Leo in the state he’s in and see just how broken all the Hamatos are by his “death” is just 👌👌👌 The fact that this places with one of my favorite tropes aka “Leo being in the Prison Dimension longer than canon” is just so good. Genuinely a thoroughly gripping tale that I highly recommend. It’s not complete yet (a lot of this list isn’t) but what is there is so amazing please read (though you most likely have read it already haha)

- little kid with a big death wish and firefight by remrose are another two you’ve likely seen but by god are they worth the read. Firefight isn’t done yet but it and death wish are so amazingly well written and really go into how trauma affects people differently and how ties with family can be tested in traumatic situations. Hard subjects definitely but very maturely done. (Also I misread firefight as firelight for way too long before I realized it-)

- Power Up and Times Five by pickedcarrotsandradish are both unfinished but I can’t care because what we were given is so good that I’m fine with them as they are. Both deal with Leo’s insecurities and bad feelings about himself and, very importantly, the fics go into how these insecurities establish a base for Leo’s very real flaws and how those flaws push him to act the way he does. Very interesting and compelling stuff here!! Power Up especially does really cool things for the boys’ mystic power ups, especially Leo’s, and I loved reading about the ins and outs of what they could do.

- Race Against Life, Death, and the EPF by Cass_Phoenix is just so engaging to read??? Like I love the entire set up for it - it’s feels so fresh and like you’re in Leo’s desperate situation yourself. I was so excited whenever a new chapter came out because the atmosphere was so well done.

- A Mixed Bag by GreatlyBlessed is SHOCKINGLY not Leo-centric for once haha. It’s not completed, but again, like the others above it is so good that I recommend it anyway. This story is actually a crossover between four sets of TMNT (‘87, ‘03, ‘12, and Rise) and the dynamics set up in it are SO fun I love it. Team 2 is my fave because you have literally all my faves on that team how could I not?? I also highly appreciate that everyone gets a chance to shine and that there’s no bashing at all, they’re all just very much in character and it’s refreshing to read ❤️❤️❤️

There’s a LOAD more that I could recommend I’m sure but I don’t remember them off the top of my head at the moment.😭 If I remember I’ll come back and add them in!

(Forgot about AU’s- honestly there’s some that I see and catch up on when I see them but there’s just so many that it’s a bit difficult to keep track of sometimes! I’d have to go around and fully look through many before having a solid answer haha! The ones I do see are always so well done though, I may come back and add them here if I remember 😅)

i wish it wasn't so normal for people to complain about unfinished wips or fics that take a long time to update. because sometimes i think i have a really fun idea for a fic but it'd take a while for me to write, and i like talking about my work as i do it and i don't like writing entire fics over like 20k without sharing, because i lose steam. so if i were to write and post that cool fic idea, it'd be as a wip. and then i think about all the people who just refuse to engage with wips, or all the other people who would just go "update pls" all the time, and of how people only really comment in the first 24 hours something is posted and then it's lost to obscurity, and then i just go "actually whats the point in going through the effort writing this out? i'll just daydream about it now and then and be done with it." and then i don't write it. alas!

Excerpt from the Barisi fic I’m working on.

‘Has anyone told you that you’ve turned into an asshole since becoming an ADA, counselor?’ Barbra’s tone is light but his eyes are narrowed and Carisi can’t stop the scoff that leaves his mouth in reply.

‘Yeah? Well who do you think I learned that from?’

Barbra’s gaze sweeps over him and Carisi tries not to shrink under it, he can hold his own. He’s more than earned his place here, is well and truly seated at the table and he deserves to feel a little cocky about his achievements, after all he’d learned that from the other man too.

‘Write up your warrants Carisi, actually-’ he holds a hand up and shakes his head, ‘I’m almost positive you already have.’ The way he says it is almost laced with something akin to fondness and Sonny can’t help the wry smile that passes over his face, ducking his head when Barba smirks back at him. ‘They do this one by the book though, there is zero room for error here.’

Sonny nods, they both know that if SVU takes any chances, if the chain of evidence is disrupted in any way then Barba’s boss won’t hesitate to rain hellfire on them. He goes back to his paperwork as Sonny moves to leave, looking up when he stops and taps on the doorframe.

‘Do you really think I’m an asshole?’ He asks softly, watching as Barba puts his highlighter down and looks up at him, expression neutral.

He tells himself it doesn’t really matter, what Barba thinks. He’s not the first one to call him that since he took up the title of ADA, Rollins had said as much and it was written on Liv’s face sometimes, that he was maybe taking it a step too far. It was different when he had his shield, he was different, probably softer but he didn’t think he’d lost that part of himself completely. The empathy he felt for victims was still there now but it took a back seat, not least of all because of the politics involved with 1 Hogan Place but because he needed to make his cases airtight so that he could get justice for them. He was sure that Barba would understand, he’d been called an asshole and worse not only by the likes of SVU but most of the NYPD.

‘I think’ Barba began, leaning back in his chair and surveying Sonny with a soft look, ‘that you are doing your job and doing it well. It’s not easy. What I or anyone else thinks of your attitude is largely irrelevant.’

‘Even when it’s your friends?’

He gave him a sympathetic look, ‘Sometimes we all have to be a little bit of an asshole, just to get through the day. Look Detective Carisi was always going to be a little different to ADA Carisi, it can be hard for people close to you to, make that jump and see that change, but you’re still you.’

Sonny felt his cheeks warm at the words and he smiled, ‘Has anyone told you that you stopped being an asshole when you finished up as ADA?’ Barba huffed a laugh and nodded his head his eyes sparkling in a way that had Sonny reeling for a moment.

‘And who do you think I learned that from?’
