Eulogy from a fan
MCR has been my favourite band for 20 years now. Maybe Iâm weird, but I love their music to the point where I have trouble just putting on one of their songs casually or placing one of their songs on a playlist with multiple artists. I like to listen to their albums in full, or at least have a rotation going specifically of just their vast and varied music. I adore just about all music, and theyâre the only artist I do this with.
When I first fell in love with MCRâand I fell for them hardâthey were a group of five: Gerard, Frank, Ray, Mikey, and Bob. 14-year-old me was absolutely crazy about all of them. I thought they were the coolest people in music, and any small piece of legit information about any of them got me so excited.
Before social media was standard, everything I learned about them I learned from interviews and performance footage. Iâve always remembered Bob as that silly and immensely talented blond guy in the group who was the only one not from New Jersey (Chicago). They did so many group interviews together, and behind-the-scenes music video specials for Fuse, and Bob was always smiling and laughing with the rest of them. They were clearly a family of many talents, and Bob got to finally showcase what he was capable of on The Black Parade.
There is no understating how memorable and standout the drums are on The Black Parade. I donât know the technical terminology and Iâm definitely not a music student, but the drums on that album hit me in the heart, especially on Welcome to the Black Parade. Bob clearly knew what he was doing, loved what he was doing, and as far as the rest of us know, the only reason he wasnât with My Chemical Romance to the end was because of issues with his wrists.
I loved Bobâs work so much, I went to the trouble of learning which songs on Danger Days had kept his contributions; not surprisingly, they were all my favourites on the album (Na Na Na, Bulletproof Heart, The Only Hope for Me is You, Party Poison, and Save Yourself, Iâll Hold Them Back (my number one fav from DD)). I didnât hear Conventional Weapons until after theyâd broken up completely, but again every song was a banger and again Bobâs work was excellent.
I saw them live twice when Bob was in the band, but the only time I saw all five of them together on stage was in December 2005 (during their TBP tour, at least one of the band members was taking a break for health reasons when I saw them, but I donât remember who). Iâll never forget how excited I was that first time I saw them, and Iâll never forget how much love I had for all five of them.
Iâm not going to speculate about what happened. This is meant to be a respectful message about how much Bob meant to me as a fan during the height of MCRâs career. Iâm writing all this knowing as much as the rest of the fan base about his passing, which isnât much. I read that disgusting announcement by TMZ, same as all of you, and it made me so angry.
Within the first hour of the announcement of his passing, there were already (presumably AI-generated) compilation videos of Bob on YouTube. This is the only reason Iâm not bothering to put a video together myself, I canât compete with robots, so instead Iâm here to say that Bob Bryar was and always will be one of the best drummers of the 2000s era of music, and whether you want him to be or not, he is iconic.
I was so sad when I heard he wasnât in the band anymore, and Iâm sad now. He deserved so much better, at the very least he deserved love and support, as we all do.
Rest In Peace Bob.

SEASONAL SENDOFFS - WINTER I
To Sae,
Happy New Year! I hope the first part of your season with Re Al has gone well. I was watching your last game before the winter break, you're playing really well in the midfield, considering you've always been a striker. Itâs super cool that they upload all of the academy games on their website, so I don't have to spend all my savings trying to get a flight to Spain!!
Rin was upset this Christmas, he really wished you were at home, but maybe next year! Did you get any gifts? Did you and some of your teammates do secret Santa? I did it with our friends back here and I got a Re Al jersey with your name and number on the back. It's super cool and I put a picture of it in this envelope.
School is going okay, Iâve started my studies for entrance exams, but according to my teachers I could get into any school so hopefully they go well! Are you studying over in Spain? If so, are there any differences between schooling there versus in Japan? Are you learning Spanish? Is it an easy language or are you finding it hard?
Relating to school, the end of Junior High School dance is coming up in February. Iâm going with one of the guys in class 3-C, he seems nice and he and his friends have started sitting with a few of us girls at lunch. Heâs really good at football too, but never as good as you, he only plays at provincial level. But anyway, I thought itâd be fun to go, even though it feels a little weird going to something like this without you with a guy. Iâll definitely send you pictures so you can judge my outfit. Or maybe, if youâre feeling brave, you can send me a pic in some non soccer clothes for once!
Oh, also, seeing as you probably got a new phone number due to changing countries and all, I have an instagram account now. You can follow me there and we can text so it doesn't cost us any charge, my user name is @yn.ln !!
Everyone back home is really proud of you Sae, especially the school football coach. Itâs funny, at the guysâ training heâs always telling the forwards to âplay like Sae,â which honestly puts them under pressure because not everyone has that talent. But someone who does is Rin, heâs a first year but is starting as one of two strikers for the team. He really does wish he was just like you, and he still tells me of his dreams to win the World Cup for Japan with you.
By the way, have you found any cool places to hang out in Spain? Tried any new foods? I know youâre usually super focused on training, but I hope youâre taking some time to enjoy everything there too. I read in one of the magazines I picked up that Spanish food is amazing, like churros and paella! If youâve tried any, let me know if they live up to the hype.
Well, I better wrap this up since I still need to finish some homework before tomorrow, this was included! Apparently to raise English standards in the country every student needs to write four letters, in English, every year. So start expecting to receive these every once in a while.
But I wanted to say keep going, Sae. Everyone here misses you, and weâre all rooting for you! Take care of yourself, and I hope we can catch up in person soon. Who knows? Maybe Iâll save enough for that ticket to Spain by the end of the year!
Write back to me if you have time! And send lots of pictures if you can.
Happy New Year again, and good luck with the rest of the season. Youâve got this!
Best wishes, Y/N L/N

Anne Alexandra Young Wilson was born on 4th March 1935 at Dalmarnock, Glasgow.
Anne became famous using the stage name Nancy Whiskey in the 1950â˛s when she had a hit with the song Freight Train alongside the Chas. McDevitt Skiffle Group.
If Lonnie Donegan was the king of skiffle, then Nancy Whiskey, who has died aged 67, was fleetingly its queen. As vocalist with the Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group, she had a top five hit in the summer of 1957 with Freight Train, arecord that also penetrated the American top 40 at a time when British artists rarely made any headway.
Her success came in that confused time, in the aftermath of the breakthrough of rock 'n' roll in 1956, when British record buyers, searching for an exciting, homegrown musical form, encountered both local rock 'n' rollers and skiffle.
Freight Train was driven by Whiskey's ebullient soprano and McDevitt's whistled obligato. It was the group's first single, and its upbeat arrangement belied the gloomy lyrics of its 1905 composition by black North Carolina singer Elizabeth Cotton. Its unexpected US success led to appearances by Whiskey and McDevitt on the Ed Sullivan Show, and other television slots, and a handful of stage shows, including one at Palisades Park, New Jersey.
Whiskey was born to a musical family in Glasgow. After her father, a lorry driver, taught her the guitar, she performed on the local folk club circuit while attending art school as part of her apprenticeship as a potter. Among her fellow students was Jimmie McGregor, the singer and guitarist later resident on Tonight, the BBC television magazine programme of the late 1950s and early 1960s. He introduced her to blues and hillbilly music, though it was from a Glasgow folk song, The Calton Weaver - with its "Whiskey, whiskey, Nancy, whiskey" chorus - that she took her stage name.
On McGregor's recommendation, she was signed to the independent folk label, Topic. After moving to London in 1955, she was reluctant to surrender her growing reputation as a solo performer, but was persuaded to join the Chas McDevitt group for a Radio Luxembourg talent contest.
After their US appearances, Whiskey and McDevitt recorded a well-received album, The Intoxicating Miss Whiskey, and managed another Top 30 entry with Greenback Dollar. The failure of the follow-up, Face In The Rain, was among the factors that led her to resume her solo career. Another was her pregnancy, and subsequent marriage, to pianist and drummer Bob Kelly - he was not yet divorced, and the episode triggered a brief flurry in the tabloids.
With Kelly in her backing group, the Skifflers, Whiskey put out three more singles and an LP, Nancy Whiskey Sings, before the skiffle craze was over.
Renaming her accompanists the Teetotallers, she broadened her appeal with more generalised pop and jazz standards, and proved capable of quite a sophisticated cabaret act. Despite releasing other singles her early commercial success never led to sustained chart sales and by the 1970s, family commitments had forced Whiskey into virtual retirement, though from her home in Leicester she resurfaced occasionally, most recently at a skiffle revival with Lonnie Donegan, at the Royal Albert Hall in March 1999.
Nancy Whiskey passed away in February 2003, aged 67.

A package of new bills announced Monday targeting antisemitism on college campuses will make it easier for the state to sue schools that donât do enough to stomp out hate.
Democratic politicians are looking to adjust the legal standard to make it easier to sue colleges and universities that allow discriminatory harassment to go unchecked â and ensure the schools are complying with civil rights laws.
The first bill, dubbed the ACCESS Act, would bring the legal standard in line with the 2019 rules that allow employees to sue their employer for allowing discriminatory harassment in the workplace.
âThe ACCESS Act is intended to push colleges and universities to be more proactive in preventing and responding to incidents of harassment and discrimination â not just antisemitism, which we have seen more and more since the horrific attacks of Oct. 7, but hate and bias of all kinds,â the billâs Assembly sponsor, Micah Lasher (D-Manhattan), told The Post.
âThe state of New York must use every tool at its disposal to protect our kids, and thatâs what we are doing with this legislation,â Lasher continued.
The bill is sponsored by state Sen. Leroy Comrie (D-Queens) in the upper chamber.
Another bill, carried by Assembly member Nily Rozic (D-Queens) and state Sen. Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Queens), would require every campus to have a dedicated coordinator to ensure compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
âBy ensuring every New York college and university has a dedicated Title VI coordinator, we are reinforcing the fundamental right to an education free from bias and intimidation and that allows students to be students,â Rozic said.
âThis legislation is about strengthening protections, ensuring accountability, and fostering a safer, more inclusive learning environment for all students,â she continued.
The legislative package is backed by the UJA-Federation, Anti-Defamation League and StandWithUs.
âWe have seen an alarming number of antisemitic incidents on college campuses, and it is critical that we have appropriate measures in place to ensure that no student feels unsafe due to their identity. We are grateful for the sponsorsâ leadership on this important issue,â wrote Scott Richman, regional director of New York and New Jersey at the Anti-Defamation League.
Just a week ago, the US Department of Education announced itâs investigating five universities, including Columbia, for allowing antisemitic harassment to fester on campus.
One group recently claimed that 72% of Jewish students on college campuses feel unwelcome because of their religious identity.
That report gave Cornell University and the New School âFâ ratings for how they addressed hate against Jewish students.

âThe instruction of girls was not meant to prepare them to take part in political life. Women were not citizens on par with men in the new United States. Except in New Jersey, they could not vote or hold public office. In most ways the establishment of a republic had left womenâs political status unchanged. But in a few subtle areas, progress was made. Womenâs work as mothers assumed greater purpose. Mothers were largely responsible for the early education of their children. They could rear either strong, virtuous children who would become valuable citizens or lazy, ignorant youngsters who could be corrupted easily and thus become undesirable members of society.
âŚFor women to do their job properly, they needed to possess high moral standards. They could learn these standards best if they were educated and religious. Ideally, all women should be able to read, write, keep accounts, and think logically about current issues. They were also expected to attend church and heed the moral directions of their ministers. The middle and upper ranks of American society had even higher standards for womenâs education by the end of the 18th century. Among wealthy women, poor reading, writing, and speaking skills became unacceptable. Elite men wanted their daughters to receive an education similar to that of their college-bound sons.
âŚThe curriculum of female academies focused a great deal on subjects previously considered frills: rhetoric, grammar, geography, history, arithmetic, and oratory. Now the areas of study that once had been thought essential for elite women--music, dancing, and needlework--were regarded as recreational activities or not taught at all. Although many girls continued to study these subjects and to receive praise for doing so, intellectual development was regarded as equally or more important.
âŚSoon boarding schools for girls also opened. They appeared in rural areas as well as towns and answered a need for families who did not have relatives living in a northeastern city. One of the most successful was the Moravian Seminary in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, which had a reputation for strictly supervising the morals of its students while providing an advanced curriculum. âŚParents were particularly concerned that their daughters receive moral instruction at boarding schools, where girls lived for extended periods of time. At the Moravian Seminary, for example, students stayed for a maximum of about three years, beginning when they were as young as 10 or 12 years old.
âŚWhen mothers wrote to their daughters at school, they frequently stressed the importance of diligence and urged their daughters not to waste their time. In turn, many girls recognized that they had been given a privilege their mothers had not enjoyed, and that their absence from home represented considerable maternal sacrifice. After all, during these years they could be of greatest help to their mothers in running their households. For some families, doing without a teenage daughterâs labor must have been as difficult as paying for the cost of her higher education.
âŚAlthough girls strove for academic excellence, they had nowhere to employ their education after graduation. Colleges were closed to women during this era, and so were the professions. Women might become skilled healers, but they could not attend medical school and become licensed physicians. They might offer religious instruction in their homes, but they could not serve as ministers for any congregations, except those of the Quakers. They might run successful businesses as single women, but when they married, the law demanded that they have their husbandsâ permission to continue working outside the home.
âŚUnder the laws of England as enforced in the United States, married women could not own property in their own name without special (and rare) contracts called marriage settlements. Everything a woman brought to marriage became her husbandâs. Movable goods became her husbandâs absolutely, and a man could sell or give away his wifeâs movables at will. Menâs control over womenâs real estate was restricted, however. A husband could not mortgage or sell his wifeâs land unless the woman consented and signed deeds stating she did so of her own free will. But during marriage, a man could manage his wifeâs real estate and take all the rents and profits for his own use.
âŚAfter the Revolution, all the new states made divorces easier to obtain. Some legislatures voted to allow both formal separations with property divisions, and absolute divorces that permitted remarriage. Others provided only for separations. But everywhere it was acknowledged that women and men needed legal recourse for disastrous marriages. âŚFreedom from English law allowed Americans to institute reforms in marriage that England adopted only in the 20th century. Both women and men benefitted from the new laws, which acknowledged male as well as female adultery and prohibited physical cruelty. American lawmakers congratulated themselves on their liberality to the female sex, but the courts still favored men. They routinely demanded more evidence of menâs wrongdoing than womenâs and automatically gave men custody of their children.â

Reasons To Take The Fall Protection Training in New York, New Jersey, Texas, Florida, California, And Alaska
Workplace safety is not a term that needs to be written on forms and certificates. Instead, it is essential for all workers who scale heights on their assigned tasks or face the risks of slip and fall to undergo the proper training that OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) recommends. Prevention and protection from such risks become essential for construction and general industry workers. Undergoing systematic fall protection training in New York, New Jersey, Texas, Florida, California, and Alaska may also improve oneâs job prospects, as employers are happy to get workers who are trained to protect themselves and others from the risks of physical injury and/or disability. â The existing workers eager to take the training can do so from the privacy of their homes, too. This enables them to do it discretely on a weekend, thus ensuring no absenteeism at the workplace. Employees engaged in the following industries often face the risks of falling and being gravely injured:
l Construction l Manufacturing l Oil and Gas l Utilities l Maintenance l Telecommunications l Roofing
Diverse companies feel the need to train their workers in fall protection necessities for various purposes. Some of the most critical aspects of this OSHA-recommended training course include the following:
Safety- Falls and fatality of workers are a serious problem across many industries. It is the construction industry that reports the maximum of such injuries. This can lead to loss of wages, serious medical expenses, disability, and even death of the injured worker. Being trained in safety practices can enable the workers to prevent such an outcome.
Reduced RisksâThe training helps the workers understand the risks and reasons for falling when doing their jobs. They learn how to avoid such risks, thus reducing the possibility of falls at their work sites.
Cost-effectiveâCompanies operating in the construction, manufacturing, and general industries can avoid enormous expenses for medical treatment for injured workers, insurance claims, and other costs associated with workplace injuries. Moreover, low workplace productivity may be addressed effectively by using trained workers at the sites.
Legal ComplianceâOSHA recommends that employers provide fall protection training to workers exposed to the risks of falling while performing their tasks. Compliance with this standard is advised for all employers who may be penalized otherwise.
The training course covers the following topics, each important for fall protection of the workers and/or supervisors:
l Hazard Identification l Fall Protection Systems l Equipment Inspection and Maintenance l Emergency Procedures l OSHA Standards l Competent Person Responsibilities
The training course requires only 24 hours of the studentâs time. Afterward, the certificate of completion may be submitted to the employer.
Workers regularly exposed to hazardous substances need to be well protected from health issues and/or injuries. The trained workers are advised to undergo the 8-hour HAZWOPER in New York, Florida, Maryland, California, Texas, and Alaska. This refresher course needs to be taken once every year.Â

John Lloyd Young At Cafe Carlyle - Setting New Standards In Classic New York Style
Every time you think John Lloyd Young has achieved perfection, he finds ways to raise the bar - and go beyond it.
Back around Thanksgiving, when the April dates for Cafe Carlyle were announced, JLY had excitedly told some of us who were on the Bavaria and Austria tour with him that he and Ron Abel, his musical director for this engagement, were working on a special new set with some brand new songs. He didn't mention what any of them were going to be - but that's OK, because they were lovely surprises that were worth the wait.
The first song out of the gate was a major surprise, because it's one of the most current songs that he covers. "Too Sweet" was released by Hozier last year...and JLY made it his own - complete with a glass of whiskey neat as he held all of us spellbound. I hope he records this one at some point, and keeps performing it in future sets.
The next song, "Nevertheless", was smooth and romantic. He had done this one once before, a few years ago at 54 Below with the immensely talented Ron Abel, and it's a thrill to hear it again. It was originally a hit in 1931, back around the time that the Carlyle Hotel opened...which leads to our next song.
JLY talked about the history of Cafe Carlyle and the hotel, as he showed off the Cafe murals created by Marcel Vertès, who won two Academy Awards for the 1952 film, Moulin Rouge. He also talked about how Richard Rodgers and his family were the first tenants of the Carlyle back in 1930 - then performed his rich, stunning rendition of "I Have Dreamed" from The King And I.
He followed up with another brand new addition, Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams". This haunting version from the male point of view took my breath away, as he conveyed all of the emotion completely. It was one of those songs that you never expected, but was everything you needed.
Continuing with the theme, JLY performed "In Dreams", which is a Roy Orbison song he has not done before. It was truly otherworldly and mesmerizing. To complete the Orbison trifecta, he sang a powerful "Only The Lonely", and the unreleased gem "Say No More". As he performed these songs with his dark glasses on, he embodied Roy. A couple of months ago it was announced that a Roy Orbison biopic is officially in the works. I am putting it out into the universe for JLY to play this role, as he is 100 percent perfect for it. Considering that both JLY and Frankie Valli consider Mr. Orbison their #1 vocal influence, among other things, I'd say it's a sign.
He told us the story of how when he was an exchange student in Venezuela, he would immerse himself in Spanish ballads in order to learn the language better and be able to communicate well with his host family. One of these songs, "Perfidia", is one of the best known standards. It's always special when JLY sings in Spanish, but even more so for this one because it is also a new addition to the set. It was beautifully heart-wrenching...in that fado style that he loves to perform - as he told us, he "likes to open a vein" as a singer.
Next up was "I Only Have Eyes For You", which is a recent addition to his sets, but is also a song that the Jersey Boys OBC would often perform at events. He followed with "Just One Smile" (the Gene Pitney/Dusty Springfield classic), which he hasn't performed in quite a while, but always moves us when he does it.
Moving into the Jersey Boys portion of the evening, he told stories of teaching Havana schoolchildren "Big Girls Don't Cry" on the cultural mission to Cuba. He then had us participate along with him for this one. He also performed "Moody's Mood For Love", which anyone playing Frankie Valli has to nail in their audition. On Friday evening, Bob Gaudio's daughter Danielle was in the audience; she actually helped JLY in getting her dad on board with his audition of this song.
Of course JLY also did "Can't Take My Eyes Off You", which is always perfection. On Saturday evening, his friends Bob and Suzy Pence were in the audience. Bob is the former United States Ambassador to Finland, and it was Suzy's birthday - so on this night, JLY included "Sherry", which is her favorite song.
For his encore, JLY did his ethereal, breathtaking version of "The Air That I Breathe". We ended the evening with "Maybe I'm Amazed"...his version is always my favorite, and the perfect ending to a stellar night of music.
John Lloyd Young's conscientiously curated set showcases his full vocal range and emotional depth. He continuously takes his standards to an even higher level, taking on new challenges and thriving as he conquers them. He can sing absolutely anything, and he makes every song he sings better and more relevant. I and so many others are extremely grateful to have been there for this special Carlyle set. I can't wait to hear what he comes up with next - there are no limits!

Podcaster Profiles: Rich DeSisto -- A Man of Many Audio Talents
Remember the 1952 movie classic Singin' In The Rain? The musical is about the transition from silent films to talking pictures in the 1920s Hollywood. A key plot point is that Lina Lamont has a difficult time adapting to talking pictures.
In the 1940s, comedian Fred Allen had arguably the most popular show on radio. Sadly, Allen was never able to make the transition to TV.
Radio personality, podcaster, teacher, podcasting coach, and producer Rich DeSisto moves seamlessly from radio to podcasting and back to radio in a frictionless transition and as an acknowledged master of audio.
In this edition of Podcaster Profiles, we'll talk to Rich and understand how he made his bones in radio but was able to transition into podcasting to such an extent that he now teaches Studio Operations, Digital Audio Editing and Podcasting at the CBS Media Center in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, which is only 10 miles from Philadelphia.
Rich has decades of experience in the radio industry, being a radio personality for multiple radio stations. He currently works for Beasley Media at Magic 98.3 serving Central Jersey. Rich also works for Beasley at WMTR 1250 Morristown, NJ, serving Morris County and the surrounding area.
Listen to one of Rich's radio demos here. Â
Rich has also done voice-over work for over a decade. With all of these jobs, Rich understands that his voice is his most valuable instrument.
Rich, a South Jersey local, attended the Center for Broadcast Training and graduated with a Certificate in Radio and Television Broadcasting.
In Rich's audio podcasting classes, Rich stresses the importance of students developing a relationship with the microphone.Â
"When you study for a radio career, the microphone is all-important," Rich notes. "It's a lesson that many indie podcasters learn through trial and error, but there are exercises and routines to improve voice projection, clarity, and register."
Rich teaches students to use their diaphragm when speaking into the mic, stay hydrated, practice mouth exercises, no dairy, no carbonation, and hum to open up your throat.
In his podcasting class, Rich teaches audio podcasting only.
"While video podcasts are the new shiny object," Rich notes, "Audio podcasting is still the gold standard. Why watch a video of two people talking surrounded by microphones and sound boards."Â
Rich focuses his podcasting coaching on helping people to leverage their podcast to grow their business.Â
"Podcasting can be a helpful tool for businesses to improve their brand visibility, create leads for more sales, drive clients to their business offerings, and open up new markets," Rich counsels.
If being a radio personality, podcasting teacher, and podcast coach isn't enough of a full plate, Rich is also a successful independent podcaster.
Rich's Aircheck podcast has been producing episodes since January 2019. In radio, an aircheck is a recording of a radio broadcast that is used for quality control, evaluation, and demonstration.
Aircheck is a podcast about radio's personality from radio personalities. Each episode includes guests from the Radio industry including, but not limited to, Air Personalities, Program Directors, General Managers, and Owners. In addition to the shared stories, Aircheck incorporates the rewound audio from those special story moments.
Rich, along with Paul Kelly, has interviewed radio personalities such as Danny Bonaduce, Nina Blackwood, and Eddie Trunk on the show. Aircheck keeps its episode length manageable and breaks up its interviews into smaller chunks, avoiding the massive runtimes that podcasts have drifted to in the last few years. Aircheck begins its fifth season very soon.Â
Podcasting has blossomed from the roots planted by radio. In the earlier days of podcasting, popular radio shows were often played as podcasts with little or no editing. Many of the early podcast hosts began in radio.Â
A radio personality like Rich DeSisto has been able to maneuver from the past, into the present and prepared for the future through podcast coaching to leverage podcasts for business, teaching audio podcasting to students, producing his own podcast, and still performing on the radio.
Rich DeSisto is a man of many talents.

MIT student encourages all learners to indulge their curiosity with MIT Open Learning's MITx
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/mit-student-encourages-all-learners-to-indulge-their-curiosity-with-mit-open-learnings-mitx/
MIT student encourages all learners to indulge their curiosity with MIT Open Learning's MITx

Shreya Mogulothu is naturally curious. As a high school student in New Jersey, she was interested in mathematics and theoretical computer science (TCS). So, when her curiosity compelled her to learn more, she turned to MIT Open Learningâs online resources and completed the Paradox and Infinity course on MITx Online.Â
âComing from a math and TCS background, the idea of pushing against the limits of assumptions was really interesting,â says Mogulothu, now a junior at MIT. âI mean, who wouldnât want to learn more about infinity?â
The class, taught by AgustĂn Rayo, professor of philosophy and the current dean of the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences, and David Balcarras, a former instructor in philosophy and fellow in the Digital Learning Lab at Open Learning, explores the intersection of math and philosophy and guides learners through thinking about paradoxes and open-ended problems, as well as the boundaries of theorizing and the limits of standard mathematical tools.
âWe talked about taking regular assumptions about numbers and objects and pushing them to extremes,â Mogulothu says. âFor example, what contradictions arise when you talk about an infinite set of things, like the infinite hats paradox?âÂ
The infinite hats paradox, also known as Baconâs Puzzle, involves an infinite line of people, each wearing one of two colors of hats. The puzzle posits that each individual can see only the hat of the person in front of them and must guess the color of their own hat. The puzzle challenges students to identify if there is a strategy that can ensure the least number of incorrect answers and to consider how strategy may change if there is a finite number of people. Mogulothu was thrilled that a class like this was available to her even though she wasnât yet affiliated with MIT.Â
âMy MITx experience was one of the reasons I came to MIT,â she says. âI really liked the course, and I was happy it was shared with people like me, who didnât even go to the school. I thought that a place that encouraged even people outside of campus to learn like that would be a pretty good place to study.âÂ
Looking back at the course, Balcarras says, âShreya may have been the most impressive student in our online community of approximately 3,900 learners and 100 verified learners. I cannot single out another student whose performance rivaled hers.â
Because of her excellent performance, Mogulothu was invited to submit her work to the 2021 MITx Philosophy Awards. She won. In fact, Balcarras remembers, both papers she wrote for the course would have won. They demonstrated, he says, âan unusually high degree of precision, formal acumen, and philosophical subtlety for a high school student.â
Completing the course and winning the award was rewarding, Mogulothu says. It motivated her to keep exploring new things as a high school student, and then as a new student enrolled at MIT.
She came to college thinking she would declare a major in math or computer science. But when she looked at the courses she was most interested in, she realized she should pursue a physics major.Â
She has enjoyed the courses in her major, especially class STS.042J/8.225J (Einstein, Oppenheimer, Feynman: Physics in the 20th Century), taught by David Kaiser, the Germeshausen Professor of the History of Science and professor of physics. She took the course on campus, but it is also available on Open Learningâs MIT OpenCourseWare. As a student, she continues to use MIT Open Learning resources to check out courses and review syllabi as she plans her coursework.Â
In summer 2024, Mogulothu did research on gravitational wave detection at PIER, the partnership between research center DESY and the University of Hamburg, in Hamburg, Germany. She wants to pursue a PhD in physics to keep researching, expanding her mind, and indulging the curiosity that led her to MITx in the first place. She encourages all learners to feel comfortable and confident trying something entirely new.Â
âI went into the Paradox and Infinity course thinking, âyeah, math is cool, computer science is cool,ââ she says. âBut, actually taking the course and learning about things you donât even expect to exist is really powerful. It increases your curiosity and is super rewarding to stick with something and realize how much you can learn and grow.â Â

Facts About The HAZWOPER Training Online in New York, New Jersey, Texas, California, Connecticut, and Florida
The importance of taking the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training cannot be underrated. It is essential for workers who need to be exposed to deadly hazards when on their jobs. True, every individual tries to protect themselves by using their instincts, but it is also essential to be aware of the dangers and take suitable measures to eliminate all risks. The OSHA recommended HAZWOPER training online in New York, New Jersey, Texas, California, Connecticut, and Florida can be immensely helpful for industries and the workforce they utilize to complete their responsibilities. â Sure, individuals tend to be curious about the training and are a trifle suspicious about the online classes. It is essential to know that the online training certification can prove to be as effective as on-site training. Besides, the student is free to undergo the training in the privacy of one's home and even over a weekend. Some industries have also made training and associated certification a prerequisite for employment. The supervisor is often asked to take the training with the students, although the modules vary according to the nature of the tasks.
Each worker who needs to deal with any of the following tasks is advised to go through the training successfully and take the test to earn the certificate:
l Waste management l Environmental cleanup l Construction and demolition l Working with Oil and gas l Chemical manufacturing l Emergency response It is interesting to note that multiple HAZWOPER training courses may be taken online. The worker who aspires to get the certification should check out the details of the following courses and take the one that is convenient and suited to the work responsibilities: -
HAZWOPER 40-hour training
This extensive course with a comprehensive curriculum offers information and safety tips on various topics. It is a must for individuals who are exposed to hazardous materials daily. This training course includes detailed information about the dos and don'ts related to:
l Site Characterization l Hazardous Chemicals l Radiation Hazards l Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) l Decontamination Methods
HAZWOPER 24-hour training
This is a shorter course that may be completed in a single day. It aims to train people who are exposed to work with hazardous waste materials. The materials may be used in everyday products such as paint, solvents, pesticides, and/or asbestos. The training course educates the students about the following:
Basic safety principles, even with limited exposure to the above mentioned substances.
Provides a thorough understanding of the OSHA standard 29 CFR 1910.120(e)(3) that the training is based upon.
8-hour HAZWOPER refresher course
As evidenced by the name, this is a refresher training course that must be taken by trained students who have successfully undergone the training in the past year. It is mandatory to take the refresher course every year to recollect the lessons learned previously. It is also an opportunity to learn about updates and new safety practices.
People entering small, tight spaces during an ongoing construction project risk being trapped. Likewise, going into an extremely narrow space such as vaults, tanks, or tiny, cramped areas with no doors can be a hazard. To remain protected on the job, it is important for people engaged in such tasks to take the OSHA confined space training in New York, Maryland, Texas, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Alaska.Â
