@lullabyknell's tell me whether he is dead inspired me to write along the churchyard green. it's spooky and cool! a unique and refreshing take on the master of death trope! instead of harry being overly powerful, weird shit happens and he has to learn to roll with it. i am also deeply in love with the concept of haunting yourself, as seen in some of my favorite published books.

anything by @yellowocaballero! Meg is ridiculously talented. like, genre-shifting in mid-step while holding onto several plot threads and distinct narrative voices talented. best life merges my favorite aspects of the moon knight series with the absurdity of the comic's canon while Listen To Your Heart (No!) is equal parts cathartic and also romantic?? like, damn, she knows exactly how to write the beats while also providing a deeply satisfying ending. I was biting into my knuckles hard for the last few chapters!

I had just moved into my new apartment unit, the AC wasn't working, but damn could I laugh thanks to andrea. everyone is in on the fact that they're a time traveler on the pirate ship and they have to keep it a secret from the oblivious stede. every time i look at my billy bookcase, i can't help but chuckle because of a line.

I think this fic captures their inquisitive nature perfectly. Through their banter, you can see just how compassionate and selfless James is and how he can be very sincere despite his antics. Lily is described in canon as vivacious and this fic illustrates how her reserved nature dissolves when in good company.

He’s kind of exactly her type which was the first thing Marlene had pointed out when she’d seen him in passing.

Her naked and, more importantly, oblivious neighbour spins around to grab something from behind him and Lily sees… well, everything. More than she wanted to and, at the same time, not enough at all.

So, she does what any reasonable, twenty-five-year-old girl would do; snatches her phone from the bedside table, pulls the duvet up above her head so her naked neighbour can’t see her looking, and texts her friends.

Castling—When they were still very young, Remus Lupin’s dad married Lily Evans’ mum. It changes everything.

This is my current favorite, as it's what I'm primarily writing at the moment. It's so different from anything I've written before, and I'm obsessed with the ending 👀

Vindicated*—Five years ago, Lily Evans did the hardest thing she’d ever done, and broke up with James Potter so she could stay alive by secretly going undercover in America. Now, she’s been tasked with something even harder: doing a transatlantic mission with him.

This fic has a hold on me; it will forever be one of my favorite pieces.

The Season—James Potter, Duke of Peverell, has returned to London just in time for the season, where Miss Lily Evans is about to make her debut. Only, he’s not looking for a wife, and she’s not particularly interested in a husband.

aka, the fic where I mashed up Season 1 of Bridgerton with Jily and changed all the parts of Season 1 I didn't like. Between the slow burn and the plotting, it was so rewarding to finish this one, and I'm still so proud of how it turned out.

Hands Down*—Hello, I'm Lily Evans, you're inside my head, welcome. I just—I needed to clarify something real quick. And that's this: I don't fancy James. 

My first foray into first person POV! This fic is such a fun romcom, it always cheers me up when I need something light + fluffy to read.

I don't write Muggle AUs often, but when I do, I really go all out with the romcom ridiculousness. This fic was so fun to write and is such a special, fluffy Jily.

Not knowing what to do with his hands, he clenches and unclenches them on his lap. “We can work up to things, slowly.” “I’ve kissed guys before, Harry. We’ve already kissed,” she points out, her lips quirking up devilishly. “I’m well aware,” he says dryly. He doesn’t need the reminder; he’s had no issue remembering with all the ways that kiss has haunted his dreams, thank you very much. “I’ve done plenty of other things too, like—” “That’s—not the point,” Harry interrupts, not keen on hearing this a second time.

“You know French, yes?” she said.  “Oui,” Bill answered cheekily.  Fleur rolled her eyes, but he saw the corners of her lips tug upwards. A good sign.  “You will teach me English then.” He was sure she met it as a question, but that was not how it came out. After glancing up and down at her, Bill realized that she was very sure of his answer — yes. Normally, he would have agreed to teach her, but the Order and his family had monopolized his time recently. Though the goblins hadn’t noticed, it was starting to effect his work. Adding English lessons onto his plate would not lighten that load.  “Fleur.” He interlaced his fingers and leaned forward. “I don’t think I’m the right person to teach you.” 

Run

“You going to tell me what I did, or am I going to have to guess?” he asked. “It’s not you, Oliver.” Her tone was so despondent, so unlike Angelina, that it gave Oliver pause. He studied her for a moment, watched as she turned toward the fridge, and noticed the slight puffiness of her eyes. Ah. He could guess what had caused that. Oliver crossed his arms. “What’d he do this time, then?”

Question . . .?

When she landed, Bill was waiting for her on the back porch. It still surprised her to see the deep scars running across her oldest brother’s face. In her mind, Bill was still the cool rebel brother who went to Egypt to break curses. But he was a father and husband now, which was still hard for her to fathom. She still admired his fang earring though. Out of all of her brothers, Bill’s opinion mattered most to her. Ron could hate her, George could scream at her, Charlie could berate her choices, and Percy could abandon her, but all of that paled in comparison to Bill’s disapproval. Ginny squared her shoulders in defense as she ascended the steps.  Bill simply offered her the jacket she’d left behind earlier.  Quietly, Ginny slipped it on.  “Where is he?” Bill asked, his gaze locked on the horizon.  “At Fred’s grave,” Ginny answered softly as she buttoned up her coat.  “You shouldn’t indulgence him like you do,” Bill said. “He’s got to learn to deal with his grief on his own.”

Dream Trip: In India, Ladakh has been a dream for years. Also, Thanjavur because I am reading a book called Ponniyin Selvan by Kalki (It's a five-volume book series, now adapted into a two-part movie. Check it out if you're interested in centuries old Indian history, royal schemes and romances.) Anyways, the place is so beautifully portrayed in the books, the characters are so well written, and everything is just brilliant that I want to visit the places described in the books that I fell in love with.

Internationally, there are so many beautiful countries. But I've wanted to visit Ardmore, Ireland ever since I read Nora Robert's Gallaghers series (14-year-old me dreamt of picturesque country roads, abandoned castles, faeries and cliffs rising from the seas) 😋

21. most memorable comment/review

Gosh. What a difficult question! I hope it isn’t too corny to say, but so many of the comments I’ve received have stayed with me.

It was last year now, but I honestly think if I hadn’t received such uplifting reviews from @the-dream-team and @theroomofreq way back when I started Until the Tree Dies then I may not have continued writing for fandom. I owe them an awful lot!

But then so many others have given me such beautiful comments too, and they are equally as special. People like @marhoeders, @kay-elle-cee, @turanga4, @practicecourts, Hi_No_Kasumi, Gracie Wilkie, of course you @annabtg, and number of others have left comments that I routinely reread to feel inspired.

That is to say, as this has been my first year back writing, I think all the comments I have received in the past 12-13 months will always have a special place in my heart.

To give you a concrete answer though, I will choose my most recent comment that has struck at my heart strings and left them irreversible forever, and that is this from @mppmaraudergirl:

Not only is @mppmaraudergirl someone i ardently respect and adore, but that one comment about it being a love letter to “James’ character” just broke me. I was so worried how he’d come off in this. I read almost every comment I receive to my partner too and he told me how proud he was of me after this one, and well, I guess that was three of us crying at that point. 😂

Anyway, as always this was far too long, but it’s the end of the year, if I can’t be sentimental now, when can I? And long story short: I love all my comments very much! 🧡

Perhaps how I interact with other readers/authors. My favorite part of writing is interacting with readers, and the best part of reading fanfic is interacting with writers. There is nothing quite like conversations in the AO3 comments :')

2. What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your stories?

There are so many grammar rules, so many.

3. Do you have any suggestions to help others become better writers? If so, what are they?

Find a Beta reader!! It makes a world of difference to have a second set of eyes on your work!

4. What do you think makes a good story?

I believe many things make a good story, characterization, dialogue, plot, world-building, etc. Most of all, I believe we create wonderful stories when writers and readers share experiences through reading and writing.

6. Does writing energize or exhaust you?

It depends on the day. Energizing writing days are brilliant, and exhausting writing days are difficult. I find taking breaks on both occasions to be incredibly beneficial.

7. Have you ever gotten reader’s block? If so, what are your tips to overcome it?

YES. Create a cozy environment. I like to snuggle up in a nice chair, a warm blanket, and my favorite snack. Sometimes I will set out a large blanket outside under the shade to do my reading. Other times I need to drive up the canyon and find a quiet spot. If all else fails, a trip to the library does the trick.

8. Do you think someone could be a writer if they don’t feel emotions strongly?

ABSOLUTELY. Only you can tell the stories in your head. What a person may sell themselves short on could be what makes their stories fantastic.

9. If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Practice! Don't be afraid to take classes, reach out to others, and practice. (also, stop writing all that rhyming poetry!)

10. What was your hardest scene to write?

Honestly, all of '2am'. It was the second Jily fic I ever wrote and my first fem!Jily fic. I agonized over it for ages. I had the hardest time getting all the prepositions to make sense. I also wanted the fic to be really well done, and I worked on it for a long time! I am forever grateful for @magic-girl-in-a-muggle-world who was an exceptional beta reader for this fic and taught me so much!

11. What is your favorite childhood book?

Matilda !!

12. How long on average, does it take you to write a one-shot or a chapter of a fic?

Weeks. (r/writing: what magic does it require to write a coherent story in less than a month?)

14. How do you edit your work?

After I finish the first draft, I do a really quick rough edit/read-through. Next, I wait a day or two and reread/edit with fresh eyes. I usually add more to the story change plot points, add character/scene details, and characterization elements. I wait another day or so before I drop the story into my favorite web editor, ProWritingAid. Which is a HUGE help and where a majority of my massive editing takes place. After a day or so of editing, I find someone to beta the fic. Once I get the fic back from a beta reader, I do another edit to fix everything needed. I wait AGAIN, (and this is the one that nearly kills me) before I do a final read-through and post the story.

15. Where does inspiration come from?

A lot of my writing inspiration comes from my daily life or previous experiences. But it also comes from random thoughts, shows, books, and other fics.

16. Who has been helpful to you as you write for the fandom?

Readers who read my stories, readers who leave kudos/like my stories, readers who comment on my stories, and friends who beta read for me. Readers who come on anon to ask questions about my story, friends on discord who support my stories, and friends in group chats about writing. Anyone who reblogs my writing or recommends it in any forum. Writers who respond to comments with anything like, "I wanted that to come across, I am so glad you noticed it!" I could create an endless list of individuals who are thoughtful and incredible friends. The remarkable thing about the Jily fandom is everyone is like that, which is why is such a treat to be here.

Lily Evans!

18. What is a fic you would love to write but are worried you won’t be able to accomplish it/nervous it wouldn’t work out?

Any Hogwarts-era Jily fic makes me extremely nervous! Jily canon is a lot to work through!

19. Do you ever self-insert in fics?

Absolutely!

20. What is the story you are proudest of?

"All I think about is you" & "Personality before Punctuality" (shout-out to hinny 'simple things you do')

21. Do you prefer writing canon jily or muggle au?

I love both, but I adore Muggle AU's most.

22. What do you do to keep you writing when you feel you have a block in creativity?

I remind myself of my writing goals/motivations with the mindset that taking a break can be healthy. I haven't found anything that works every time but I run through a good list when this happens. (Reading old stories, typing out silly dialogue, looking up prompts, reading old comments, rereading my fav fics, starting a new book, writing a very long journal entry, yoga)
