some more non-human terror au musings under the cut!!!

the marines are inspired by the van helsing werewolves. they have individual colors and coat patterns. they're incredibly loyal to jirv because thats where sol's own loyalties lie, and given that he's their leader, they go where he does. (once again i say, this started out as a tozirvitage au) also heres the van helsing werewolf design, for those unfamiliar. (needless to say, theres pleanty of spare clothing on board for the marines Just In Case)

tuunbaaq is still a thing in this, but focuses more on attacking the erebus than it does the terror.

the avians on the terror (jirv, hodgson, peglar & occasionally billy due to him having wings) have the responsibility of scouting ahead of the boats for danger or passage, which, once they're ice-locked, switches to them scouting for a way out/land under crozier's command. sir john is adamantly against this as he still believes they'll be fine by the summer, but almost daily, crozier sends two of them out early in the morning at a time, and they dont return until nightfall to avoid sir john finding out. henry is the main scout simply because there isnt much for the captain of the foretop to do on an icelocked ship.

yes, bridglar is canon. you'll have to rip them away from my cold, dead hands. john's pillow is stuffed with henry's feathers, and as the years pass, henry brings him feathers to sew into his coat to help keep him warm. he also has a small collection of trinkets henry has given him over the years. teaching henry to read and lending him books is his way of "courting" henry back.

the men on the erebus steer as clear of the men on the terror as they possibly can. theres a lot of anti-non-human sentiment among them, and a lot of stories about how "vicious and evil" non-humans are. its bad to the point that the erebites point fingers at certain terrors when tuunbaaq first starts attacking. it isn't until tuunbaaq is seen outright that every erebite gives up on believing the worst of the terrors.

sir john is a bit TOO accepting of the non-human nature of terror's crew in the way that he's a bit too kind to crozier in the beginning. he's overcompensating. he still holds a lot of distaste for non-humans (part of why he discouraged any kind of engagement between cracroft and crozier), he just disguises it because he doesn't want to come across as rude. he commits a ridiculous amount of microaggressions before he dies, though. (tommy wasn't too particularly inclined to tell anybody how sir john would die after he implied that sol and the marines should be "house trained")

fitzjames hasnt changed much, aside from now being a monsterfucker. he doesnt really care about the existence of non-humans unless one of them is actively hurting him or his loved ones. contrary to popular belief, he doesnt like crozier (at first) because of his attitude, not because of what he is. really not a change outside of him being a monsterfucker now. he needs that Creature so bad.

okay i'm going to stop there because i could genuinely go on and on about this au. i am, for once, actually planning this fic out! i normally just write in a fugue state and then read whatever i wrote back the next day, then post without beta reading lol. heres hoping i actually end up getting it written instead of keeping it in the planning stage! knock on wood!

more goofing off! spent a long time trying to figure out how to bring the party back together.

moss gave shades magic info about a dungeon! an abandoned treasure vault in a chasm. SO we need spingledorf. SO i gotta find nana.

found nana! she has my dog :( meanie. nana doesnt wanna but is like 'aight ill go so i can hit him.' we find an elf man who saw dorf so off we go into the magic circle.

i told him i found dirt! but he runs cause hes scared of nana lol. me and nana apologized so dorf would be happy. but i dont know where the chasm is! and the portal closed so we gotta walk. dorf is gonna summon a spectral stead.

i pull out my map and try to find the location. found it lets goooo! nana went outside for some kush lol. shades helps dorf and nana up. off they go! (moss got supremely angry we were riding the horse wrong lol)

found the chasm! gotta climb down! got my rope and pitons lets not fall to our deaths ok? tunnels! its moist and smells like shit. dorf finds a chest! shades says it could be a chest SO dorf decides to fuckin firebolt it. gas fills the cavern. good job. asshole. were knocked out.

we wake up 2 hours later and henry made his way down somehow. good job! nana is surrounded by swirling energy! she spun in circles to avoid them but it didnt work. dorf said it some kind of wild magic. it lasts 24 hours lol.

nana punches it but nothing happens. dorf touches it, nothing happens. were stuck with it, so further into the cave we go! we find a magic circle and parchment. the circle is designed to keep people out with nonmagical means.

its a text about medicine. theres also some powder and liquid and some beakers and some potions. nana breaks a powder vial for fun and has to make a saving throw. she also breaks a liquid one. shes wearing boots so nothing happens and thats sus.

when nana tries to speak, pink bubbles come out of her mouth! i take the rest of the vials cause dear god nana is trying to kill herself this way. i walk dorf away and give him the vials. oil of taggit and purple worm poison. stick those in my bag. lets carefully continue.

i turned vibrant blue?! i need a remove curse spell. do that later though. CYCLOPS. dorf uses comprehend languages! but dorf cant speak giant. oh no. nana starts walking away while im pantomiming at the wild magic. also shes walking slower than usual.

dorf gives the cyclops jerky. so we go through the next room. furniture pog. some vases. a drum. and still smells like shit. we also hear footsteps. i go and listen at the door. i hear footsteps moving away and stopping. i slowly open the door. theres a pit! right there!

we jump over the pit! dorf just barely misses it. but i yank him fast. were in a hallway! we hear scrabbling! i pull out my dagger and carefully walk ahead. a screech pierces the air! and it smells like sulfer!

dorf pulls out an orb of spying. a rat or something? nana squished it. but that wasnt the true enemy! sus! we also find a bright green slime! its clinging to everything in patches. NANA WANTS TO EAT IT! 8 acid damage dummy. and another 6 damage for touching it.

ALRIGHT SINCE SOMEONE ASKED!!! this if for you @gloomy-ghosty Starting off with Tommy here: - I think it's funny that Tommy is the most human looking of bench trio. I don't have any set symbolism behind this decision, I just think it's silly to put him next to the other two like "Guess who the troublemaker is here-" Impossible edition/j - This guy is kind of a walking piece of history. Some things are obvious like the bandana from Tubbo, and the compass ofc. (Which I also meant to include in Tubbo's design but forgor-) But also the scars and cardigan which I will explain separately otherwise this is gonna be a paragraph not a bullet point- - SCARS!!! The main one being on his forehead that I actually haven't seen many people include on Tommy designs, but it's a blunt force trauma scar from his death via potato (Dream) Also while not actually a scar, the band-aids on his knees are a call back to his first death of when he hit the ground too hard while running from dream. -CARDIGAN EMBORDERY!!! okay theres quite a bit here, like i said walking peice o history. Spider on the shoulder is a callback to shroud. Lower down the sleeve is meant to be alliums, a callback to when Ranboo gave Tommy and allium before blowing up George's hose. (I wanted to include a nod to Tubbo aswell, however I couldn't think of anything that directly ties to Tommy, plus this mf already's got the bandana and compass) On the other arm we have an embroidered cow, meant to be Henry. Lower on the sleeve is the discs Mellohi and Cat which obviously- The other flowers dont mean shit but this is a cottage core ass bitch so he deserves it. - Headcanon, Tommy made the cardigan himself. TUBBO NEXT!!!: - Funnily enough least number of thoughts here despite being my most thought about little guy of the three normally- - Based on the Snowchester skin (I forgot to color the flag on his little snow vest shit) - Based on goat as most of the fandom does- BUT ALSO BIG FLOPPY EARS!!! its a little funny cause as I've drawn Tubbo his ears have just gotten longer over the years. Also the sideways pupils are also goat based along with the tail (hard to see but its there-) -Scars!!! Fireworks ✨ for the side of the face and neck, also why the horn is broken. OH! and also why part of the right ear is discolored! the fur grew back a slightly different color with the scar tissue (while most of the time hair does not grow on scar tissue it's been seen on some animals when it does it's discolored in some way.) - Red bandana from tommy hanging out of pocket:3 - Also looks extremely friendly for having nukes in his basement- - He's built like a family sized cereal box/pos

RANBOO TIME!!!: - My most cryptid motherfucker godbless (non-religious) now Ranboo's whole design breaks down into 2 parts. The Enderman part and the unknown part. - Enderman Headcannons: Easier part to explain is the purple blood, which is why the blush is a purple shade. As for the hair growth (referring to the head hair growth specifically but could go for the paws Aswell potentially) In the End, there isn't any sunlight, and all of the Enderman are bald. I also can't imagine there is much nutrition in the end between the lack of sunlight and vitamins via that and also the only food source being chorus fruit. SO when put into the overworld and suddenly experiencing sun and other types of foods (I can only imagine the sunburns-) but also imagine hair growth starts and is actually very quick, potentially even to help like protect the skin from the sun perhaps. Which is why Ranboo has abnormally long hair, which I'd imagine could get to that length withing a couple of months. Also the legs being like that is also an enderman trait, however the big paws are not. I'd imagine regular enderman feet are skinnier and maybe even hoof like. The tail is also an enderman trait but not a common one, the double tail is even more rare and likely result of the hyrbid shit. Oh and the mouth- 100% can unhinge their jaw like a snake. - Other traits of the unknown: PAWS!!! and the ears and just anything that's not in the enderman section. But the eye color is also notably not enderman. While the eye like set up (with the sclera being a darker shade of the pupil) is enderman, usually enderman eyes are purple, similar to their blood. Also the horns are not an enderman trait:3 - Headcanon, they've never switched to a different outfit other than suit because nothing else fits them. (Maybe Tommy can make knit him something sometime) - Also making Ranboo the most like cyrtid unsettling looking of the three is funny to me as he's the most peaceful little guy here.

The young, rightful heir to the Toppat kingdom has been locked up in the palace walls even since the boy was 5 years of age when his parents met an unfortunate end. Terrence Suave, a nobleman from another kingdom, took over, becoming king. So, he’s a young lad filled with a hope to see outside the palace walls, trying his best to be the best prince he can for the Toppats, even if it’s just writing scrolls all damn day.

Born poor and still living that way, the mysterious thief, that goes under the name “Right”. Of course, not many people know his name, but what he prefers to be addressed by. And he’s living life okay; until a certain prince gets himself mugged and he finds himself being his favourite person to talk to outside of the palace walls.

King Terrence Suave 

After successfully murdering the Copperbottom king and queen (yet claiming they had died of natural causes), Terrence went into power *very* quickly, becoming one of the worst tyrants to ever monitor the Toppat Kingdom. His main focus, however, is on Reginald, making sure that twink doesn’t have any chance to become king himself.

Admiral Dmitri Petrov 

Previously being a guard to King Hubert, Dmitri is now the leading admiral for the Toppats after his hand got twisted into a deal in order to spare the king’s life. Growing up poor, Dmitri believed he owed Galeforce a great debt from taking him into the castle for shelter and has vowed to pay it back. And even after not seeing him after many years, he still thinks about the debt.

Henry Stickmin

A well know assassin on the streets of Gorova, He’s assigned mostly by people who are shady but also got a *lot* of money to pay him with. He and Ellie Rose have a rivarly of sorts, the two constantly being assigned the same jobs and see who can do it more efficently.

Prince Charles Galeforce

Abandoned on the war grounds between the Toppats and Gorova, Charles was found by King Galeforce and taken under his wing, bringing him up as his own son and soon to be next in line for the throne.

Ellie Rose

Like mentioned before, Ellie is quite an interesting character. An assassin herself and has a rivalry with Stickmin. But, the only difference is, Ellie is quite well known by the palace and is often assigned jobs by them instead.

King Hubert Galeforce

After falling into grief when he lost his guard (Dmitri), Galeforce continued to try and be the shining hope in the war against the Toppats and Gorova. ALRIGHT THERES CHARACTER BACKSTORY DONE WOOOOOOOO

Since I finally have time for it today, lets make sure Im all caught up for the hiatus.

Stupid random theories, headcanons, and unpopular opinions of mine

Btw, these are all long so sit tight

My mangle theory :

I cant be the only one here who thinks that mangle was taken apart by little kids. It wouldn't make sense that little toddlers would be strong enough to pull apart a metal robot. That's because the kids didnt break her, william did. Mangle seems like he was an inspiration from funtime foxy because sister location happened before AND a lot of times, "toy foxy" is often referred to "funtime foxy". Due to this inspiration, mangle had the ability to record voices and things just like funtime foxy. Why am I pointing this out? Well, why would mangle randomly have static noises and a broken radio sound? It's her recorder, it's broken. He recorded many things and then recorded something that someone didnt want anyone to find out about. That someone would be William afton. William is always suspicious and doing evil things.Let's say that, oh idk, maybe William murdered someone, some person called the cops on him, (which explains the police messages n stuff in the radio) William killed that person and his the evidence of the murders. At least that's what he thought. Mangle was somehow recording the whole thing. William had no other choice but to take her apart and destroy him. But then William thought that it would to suspicious to have mangle be randomly broken the next day and so he fixed mangle up in way where it looks like shes fixed, but one tug hes broken and the kids are there to blame for. All of this might be a stretch I know, but apparently in one of the fnaf 2 minigames where theres a mangle Sprite, in the files or sources codes or WHATEVER IDK, there's a hidden message that says "he was here" or something like that. THAT CAN SUPPORT THIS THEORY errr headcanons? Idk I should go sleep lol

Micheal headcanon:

I always wanted to believe that Micheal was the older brother/Bully and that the bite victim was a different character. Why? Because I want more..character for Micheal. He went to sister location because he wants his torn apart family to be back together. He went to save Elizabeth and he never forgave himself for being the one to 'kill' his brother and all that failed. I wanted Michaels story to be exciting and emotional because of his past and the whole family thing

I also always liked to think that Micheal started working out to gain some strength before becoming a technician because he knows that the robots are strong and dangerous. That way things can be more action packed with Michael punching through pipes and walls, and holding back animatronics trying to grab him, and just...cool stuff

Fnaf headcanons:

Freddy has a nice deep voice and that's his real voice. When it comes to preforming during the day, he talks in his "family friendly" voice which is all goofy and fun (kinda like Patrick star's voice) The animatronics are a lot different on stage. It's as if they play as characters and they change their voices sometimes (like Freddy). Chica acts like this ditzy cute country gal, Bonnie is a laid back chill bon, foxy is just more ...pirate, and Freddy is a fun loving silly lead singer

Nightmarriones pupils change shape to Express his emotions. (Sad=tear drop pupils, sick=swirly pupils, angry=skull or fire pupils)

Lefty has his own voice instead of a whispery girly voice because he is his own character. He may look like the rockstars but he was made differently. The rockstars were built by some factory or company and they have advanced technology which gives em the ability to have emotions, personalities and to do tricks. Meanwhile lefty was built by henry in a shed or something. Henry only focused on programming him to find charlie and he had to make lefty look like the rockstars to blend in and not be suspicious. Other than that, lefty was a total rush job. Henry only wanted Charlie therefore, Henry didn't care to give lefty a personality, emotions, an EYE, or stablness.

In the afton family, the mother is sweet, kind, caring, and over protective while william is outgoing, silly, and isnt afraid to do anything (before he went insane). Usually kids have similar personalities to their parents soooo I like to think that Micheal is more like his mom but looks like his dad and that Elizabeth looks like her mom but acts like her dad. Why? Because I always saw Michael as a hero, he cares for others and he wants to save his family. He is sweet and protective like his mom. Elizabeth is rebellious and sassy. In the sister location mini cutscene with William and Elizabeth, she disobeys william to see baby and that's a rebellious move. Elizabeth likes adventure and crazy things so she wont follow the rules any time soon.

Funtime chica does all the rockstar's make up. When months pass by, the rockstar's paint would peel or chip and so ft. Chica would repaint their lipsticks, eye shadows, cheeks, etc. And they look fresh and new afterwards

Even though puppet and Goldie (and all the other animatronics) have been through so much shiz, they still try to keep their cool and enjoy life

In the rockstar crew r. Bonnie is the creepiest. Yeah, he seems chill and is self centered, he is the only rockstar who is most likely to murder someone if he's told to do so (this isn't counting ucn where they all kill). All on Bonnie's songs are so creepy and he sings about killing you in unique ways. Stuff like making slivers (or slippers) out of you, flaying your flesh, smashing your face into concrete, ending your life, and stabbing your heart with his guitar. He's definitely into gory stuff

Springtrap has two different personalities. Most of the time he's himself, spring bonnie. A kind fun loving bun who completely changed his personality after becoming springtrap. He is know constantly scared, upset, and afraid of Williams next move. He hates being an evil monster but it's not something he can control due to William still having control over him. When the slringbonnie side of springtrap gets mad or upset that's when hes weak and William takes control and becomes the evil side of springtrap. Springtrap is very aggressive and very strong. Slringbonnie tries to fight back Williams spirit, but as time went on and when the kids got sent free, spring bonnie got lonely and gave up which let William take full control over him. Sprjngbonnie is gone, its William now (which explains scraptrap)

Idk if this is a theory or headcanon but fnaf 1 bonnie is blue. Yes, he is known to be purple and everyone says and draws him purple but he's blue. Maybe it's the certain blue color he is but due to lightning it makes him look very purple. When he's in more darker areas, bonnie is very blue but when he's in the light areas, hes purple. Let's not forget how every single version on bonnie is blue (except for extras like spring springbon and bonnet etc.) Exept for fnaf 1 bonnie. That doesn't make sense if one of the originals would be purple but all the other versions are blue. One more thing, in the silver eyes, they mention that bonnie has blue fur ;) this was a dumb rant sorry

Shadow bon is evil and can shape shift cause hes a goopy shadow boy and shadow fred is his lil assistant

After fazbears fright burned down, William got to take control over springbonnie(trap) and roamed the streets at night. He roamed dark allies and probably killed whoever slighted him. It was a long walk but he was just trying to get to his destination, fred bears diner. Because of the fires, the springtrap suit was more ruined and unsturdy and so it was time for a change. Somehow William got out of the suit but he's weak without one so he picked an old spring bonnie suit, scraptrap. (According to the fnaf minigames there are multiple spring bonnie suits so that why spring trap looks different)

I got more headcanons but this post is already to long :p

My Unpopular opinions:

Am I the only one here who's not way into the whole Michael AI theory?? Like it kinda makes sense but at the same time, making a whole new robot son with advanced technology IN THE 80s does not give the fnaf-y feel?? Ya know what I mean? Like it doesn't fit the theme? Also the ai thing is in the books and the books are a different universe from the games sooo idk why matpat still connected them?? Hsjsbsjsjsn fnaf is just waaaaay to confusing. Also please dont get mad at me for this opinion cause matpats ai thing is just a theory, its not canon

Foxy isnt super great. Dont get me wrong, I love foxy and he's an amazing character but I don't get why he got so much attention and hype

Bonnet and lolbit should just be canon already. They're not canon characters but they're included in sooo many things in fnaf so might as well make em canon

Funko needs to make a fnaf 2 figure set where you collect t.chica,t.bonnie,t.freddy, puppet, one of the withereds or shadows and you collect them all to make a mangled mangle figure. I would DIE for a fully formed noodle fox figure, how cool would that be?

BEFORE YOU READ, KNOW THIS REVIEW POST HAS SPOILERS FOR BENDY AND THE INK MACHINE!!!!

I have played Bendy and the Ink Machine in full now. What do I think?

Well...

The game was good, for sure, you can tell they put a ton of love, especially now with the polish added by updates, the incorporation of fan music, and the attempts at keeping everything engaging throughout the chapters. 

However, It could be really improved upon...

STORY - By far the strongest of Bendy’s points is its narrative, old cartoons are Organically creepy in a lot of ways because of a few factors, among these are the contrasting aspects of the imperfections of movement and the oftentimes unnoticed details in things like wrinkles and textures (as examples, Pete chewing Tobacco from Steamboat Willie, and the infamous cab colloway dancing ghost from Betty Boop.), so it makes a ton of sense to utilize that as a horror concept. The game throws us a steady stream of questions from almost the start of the first chapter, but while a lot is answered, there is a lot unanswered or not followed through on and it can be hard to ignore when you think about it ESPECIALLY by the end. Were the employees really all corrupted by the ink, what is Henry’s purpose, why did henry not know about his own messages if he’s written them while looping everything over and over, and how could he see or write them without the glass tool (and what with?), what is up with the animatronics and cages you set up. the game kind of shrugs at a lot; its by no means a dealbreaker because of what the story does explore about the studio, but it is noticeable.

9/10 - Amazing - The game’s big draw, though some questions are not all answered in a meaningful way, what the story does cover is still really interesting and worth playing through.

 DESIGN - Bringing actual life to something like a cartoon but failing so hard is a really great idea, and a lot of the time the game shows us the hubris in the want vs. the reality of the consequence; the monsters and places the game creates reflect it well. Everything looks like its made from the sunbleached, aged paper artists used and everything is a wonderfully messed up reflection of life at the studio and the cartoons within, particularly with the projectionist, butcher gang and the unnamed giant hand (I’ll call him Lil’ Handful). the world of Joey Drew productions is a really cool, realized one. simple but slightly barren and “off” work offices giving way for the bigger, detailed and mysterious places in the lower levels. I will however knock some of the update decisions, particularly with Sammy and Bendy himself. they originally looked blobby, as the updates came, they both got more defined in shape - respectively looking more muscular and emaciated looking, which took away from the toonish aspect of the it. Where once were feet that looked like strange melted stubs going into the floor, are just...solid feet and where once was something that looked like a melting candle trying to retain a shape is what is more or less a thin ink zombie (complete with limp). Bendy’s final form is also lackluster for me, I love the Muggshot (Sly Cooper series) tiny dangle-legs and walking around on hands thing; but its threatening, not as scary or horrifying as something that's stopped trying to be likable could’ve been taken. Everyone else is pretty good though especially the butcher gang and boris, who stayed pretty much the same and kept design elements in all forms through the production. Text for audio logs could have been bigger at times too. all in all, design is solid, but something was definitely lost as more polygons and detail were added for certain characters.

9/10 - amazing!- a great use of elements from animations of the past used in a 3d space, just the right amount of cartoon goofiness and uncanny details, though some designs were fixed when they weren’t broken.

CHARACTERS - Not much to say, I like em all, (Henry is delightfully levelheaded to the extreme, Boris is a cutie, Bendy is a threatening silent presence...) except maybe that one obnoxious guy in recordings, Wally Franks, and even then, he’s not AWFUL (I’d compare him to Fleem from Smallfoot, intentionally made to get on a nerve at least a little), the most interesting character for me Bertrum, the architect who calls Joey out on his bullcrap, and Alice Angel, both versions of her - but the manic first variant you meet first is interesting to listen to and learn about in particular. Boris is kind of lackluster, while he is nice and the reveal of him and other toons being made en masse is awesome, it also means we don’t get much time with them. Sammy sort of just comes and goes twice, and Tom!Boris and Allison I felt got the shaft and should have been established earlier for a connection. Joey is a jerk who suddenly becomes somewhat good in the last acts, which confuses me - since there was no in between those two points that's explained...

7/10 -  Good - characters are great to listen to and watch, and if the game had had more time to focus on a lot of them, that might have made them feel more complete.

SOUND - sound, music and voiceacting is well done, lots to appreciate from the creepy gurgles, to the odd stuttery sound of a projector. though there are occasionally some bad bits of soundmixing and audio. some recordings that you can find in the game stand out, there’s one that's really hard to listen to in chapter 5 because the character speaks in a really gravelly voice, in addition to the fuzzy audio effect and the ambient noise surrounding it.

8/10 - Great! - I only wish there was more! aside from one or two recordings, everything and one sounded nice, and the unease of silence is used equally well.

CONTROLS AN’ GAMEPLAY - They’re standard first person fair, responsive for sure, though sometimes the sensitivity of the controls can raise by themselves (I don’t know if that's by design, since it was at the same point as markiplier, right before a section involving being stealthy is taken on, which might actually be really clever if its true. Combat can also be wonky, but Its passable since its not a main focus, except for one REALLY obnoxious enemy gauntlet in the last chapter, if there were defined checkpoints between each wave, I’d be more inclined to let it go. Puzzles are pretty standard as well, lots of fetching, but other stuff such as playing minigames and stealth crop up to shake it up. Stuff is unlocked after everything is said and done in the story, and while it is cool narratively (messages written by henry on previous loops) and as a view of the progress the game (though, the Archives are missing a lot of info on characters like Alice and Bertrum), it just feels like its not enough for a repeat playthrough, difficulty settings and maybe achievements for unconventional but creative actions in-game, working towards something big at the end might’ve helped in that regard (here’s hoping that's the case for the console releases next month)

7/10 - Good! - its standard stuff with an occasional misshap, but there is variety to it and its simply fun for me to play.

OVERALL - The gameplay is serviceable, and aside from the main story there’s not too much reason to play the game again, but its still a solid experience the whole way through, and the time and effort of the people who made the game really shines and makes it worth playing. maybe wait for the console release, in case they add anything to that, but theres not one excuse not to play it.

Cold Breeze—Sunday Chats (11-19-17)

Another week, another Sunday

It’s been a long week for me. Not in actuality, because I’ve slept an average of 10 hours a day every day this week, which is both a good and a bad thing. It’s good because I’ve been sleeping crazy well. It’s bad because it reminds me of my Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, of my sometimes inability to drag myself out of bed to do anything. It’s also a common habit I fall into when I know I’m depressed, and while I push back as much as I can against that overwhelming feeling, it’s still there. Ever-present. And it sucks.

It helps to know that the ExtraLife team, now disbanded, is definitely full of the melancholy. We all miss each other. Some more than others, assuredly, but there is just so much love an affection there. I think taking that step back in the aftermath of ExtraLife, the distance, the pride fills me more because of the tight bonds that were just driven home over that week. 

It’s full on Persona-style bonds. Maxed social link meters and unbreakable relationships that serve as tentpole and standing memories and gifts that we all cherish, equally. It’s a comforting feeling, in the sad/loneliness. 

But I digress.

It’s been very good for games! And I’ve sunk my teeth into some big ones this week.

What’s On Tap

Assassin’s Creed Origins

This is the really big one. I’ve spent about 25-ish hours with this title this week.

I love this game, which is super surprising. I wrote a big long thing about all the wild changes they made on this blog, so I’ll refrain from repeating myself here.

One thing I really love in this game is Bayek, the main character. The relationship with him and his wife Aya is just so good. They just fucking love each other so much and its disgusting but sweet and kind of nice. it’s this central bond that the plot swirls around and it’s really strong, unlike other AC games.

I also think the side quest quality in this game is remarkable. It reminds me a ton of The Witcher 3. While I don’t think the voice acting is quite up to that same par, it’s astoundingly excellent. 

I dont’ have many complaints about this game. I really just adore it. And I’m thankful to my friends Barrett and Youssef for recommending it.

Destiny 2

I’ve only been playing a bit here and there, with another playdate with Tony and Greg tonight. It’s been fun playing the game again though, and I’ve excited for the new content coming early next month.

Overwatch

I just wrapped up playing some Overwatch just now, trying out Moira.

Moira is excellent. She is exactly what the healing team in Overwatch needed, a new on-the-ground healer. I feel like Ana is just not an effective healer at all, at least on console where aim and precision is not as strong.

What I love about Moira is that healing is a resource for her, she needs to tap into it, and if you run out, you can’t heal anymore. It means you need to use her primary energy drain weapon, get out there, and be aggressive in order to be able to support your team.

It’s a lot like Doomfist’s shield, which he generates for using his abilities on enemies, and it requires him to use his skillset to then be a better and greater asset to his team.

Moira also heals herself with her attack, so she benefits herself and her own play style by being aggressive.

I really like her. She may take top spot as my primary healer, but I am also incredibly fond of Mercy’s new ultimate, so it’s a toss up. Much like all the many characters I play in Overwatch, it’ll depend on the situation.

On a personal leve, because I don’t think 2018 will hit the same highs for me, I want there to be more surprises. Again, this is for me, because I think there were huge hit surprises this year for folks like PUBG, but I just didn’t have quite so many hits.

On that note, I hope those surprises come from smaller, indie games. Like I think that was a collection of titles that got lost for me this year because of the stellar AAA games that took the spotlight, but those weird and nuanced and special indie games are some of the best experiences I live for, and I hope with more room in 2018 I’ll be able to get lost in them.

Personally I just use the Twitter app on my phone, and I’m happy with it. Most folks I know swear by Tweetbot, but I’ve never really gotten to use it myself.

As for Desktop, it’s all about Tweetdeck. You can tweet from multiple accounts, and have just multiple timelines open it it. On mine I have a news story feed for games, my timeline, my mentions, my notifications, and then the IP notifications too. It’s the way to go, in my experience.

It was the greatest thing I’ve ever been a part of for about a dozen different reasons.

I’m excited to be able to relive it in the archived videos.

I’d love to visit Hyrule castle town either from Breath of the Wild or Twilight Princess. This is all pre-apocolypse, of course, but especially in BotW it seems like such an incredible and bustling place. I’d love to see the different peoples and cultures of that world melted together in that supreme beauty.

Another one is Hengsha from Deus Ex, because it’s the two-layer city, kind of like Midgar from FF7. I’d just love to see that in person. That’d be more of an architectural look, just to see that crazy design in person and up close.

Another would be Inaba from Persona 4. Just because that place is like a second home for me. I’d love to finally see it in person.

Hrm, that’s tough. I have a lot that I just need to boot up and get through at this point, so it’s likely the ones that I just know I’m not going to get. A big one is Night in the Woods. I’m determined to make Edith Finch happen, but Night in the Woods seems like a really special game that I’m just not going to get to.

That list of indie games is depressingly long for me too. Pyre? Probably won't get to it and I want to play that so bad. Steamworld Dig 2? I may not get to that this year. I’ll definitely play it but probably just not this year, and that’s such a massive bummer for me since I loved the first one so much. The Housemarque games this year too, since I loved all the times I played them in preview settings.

I do still have some time, and I plan on getting through a few good things between now and the end of December. We’ll see what doesn’t make it.

For me its a handful of titles that maybe Nabeshin has thrown out to me. I’d like to try Red Dead Redemption at some point. And 999. Those two are huge standouts, but outside of that, it’s hard for me to think of some franchise that I haven’t dipped my toes into at least a little bit with the given time. 

I should probably play Tokyo Mirage Sessions someday but we’ll see. Still have it sealed in the plastic wrap.

Man, this is so hard. Ideal is tough too, because maybe that implies I’ve been there?

The place I’ve always wanted to go my whole life is Ireland. Its the motherland right? It calls me back. That, and Japan. I’ve wanted to take the journey to the land of the rising sun since I was old enough to barely mutter JRPG. Those are the two places.

Let’s go.

So, for context, I saw Justice League last night and... I really loved it? Like, I loved everything about it?? I feel crazy, like I’m Greg Miller defending Batman V. Superman??

But I think if I saw it again or I took the step back, I could totally see why people dislike it so vehemently. I was honestly shocked because it... well, it felt like Justice League to me. It felt like it was out of an entirely different DC Cinematic Universe. And maybe my expectations were so low? I don’t know.

But anywhere, there are going to be spoilers in my response here, because Liza deserves the best response I can muster for this, since we’re JL believers.

YOU’VE BEEN WARNED.

Boy when Superman shows up and is just straight up like, good, smiling, wise cracking Superman (again, a totally different character than he has been up until then, but I didn’t care because fuck I miss good Superman) I was just grinning ear to ear. They managed to tap into Henry Cavill’s charisma and make him shine as someone I could actually believe is Superman. And just seeing him work with a team and work with other heroes, like, that’s Man of Steel I know and fucking love, and they just nailed it in this movie. It made me so happy. You have no Idea. It’s like I’ve waited my whole life for that.

So yeah, he was my favorite, but I liked everyone! Any second Wonder Woman was on screen was perfect. They made Batman feel so much more like Batman here it was ridiculous. I liked Cyborg a lot, and I feel like they gave him a great arc from self hatred in the beginning to “wanting to live” in the end. Aquaman and Flash were just a ton of fun. 

For me it’s just under Wonder Woman since I thought they just nailed Wonder Woman so well, but I really really loved it, as I’m sure you could tell. I was just a happy kid grinning that my heroes were finally on screen together, and it was rad.

Haha oh my god okay I don’t think I can pick ten different fingers, but I was thinking about this when I grabbed the question. Probably like, someone who’s fingers have powers, like Emperor Palatine or something? I guess Cole McGraff would be the real world video game equivalent, but someone who would let me shoot lightening out of my fingertips. If I could just choose one then one of theres and then the others from all the characters in Until Dawn.

That and one I’ve taken to heart over the last two or so years, which is just to listen, and to care, and to pay attention. You don’t need to interject your opinion in every controversial topic, and far too many people do. But that doesn’t exempt you from paying attention.

We don’t have anything concrete in the works, but we have a lot of ideas. I think PAX East is something to expect us at, and I think more written work in the future is something to anticipate soon too. Not more from who is there, but more and new voices. Exciting voices too, if we can muster it.

I’d totally be down to play Overwatch for 24 hours. I just love the loop of that game. I’d probably hate myself and it at around the 18 hour mark, but I think I could still muster it.

Least willing to do would probably be something best experienced in short bursts, like a Spelunky, or a Flint Hook, or a Cuphead, Some games require breaks and I think those fit into that fine. Doesn’t make them worse or bad by any means, but when you can walk away and come back better rested, those are good picks.

Dear Sweetheart,

Good morning good looking, how are you this nice warm bright sunny day? It is as beautiful as it can be here, sitting on my cot with the sun beaming in thru our barracks door. I’m wondering if its as pleasant up there. I suppose you are wearing your “snuggies” and “Doctor Dayton” pajamas, you know those one piece red flannel type. Here, here, what did I write!!? Oh well, I always believe in saying what I’m thinking but sometimes you can’t.

We have the morn. Off for church or errands to the PX (Post Exchange). It’s our first breathing spell since we’ve been here. We’re all razzing a bunch of newly arrived recruits who are being given there first taste of cursing and drilling by there Corporal the D.I. (Drill Instructor). No kidding the Corp and everybody down here can’t open there mouth to a “boot” unless its the longest line of cursing you ever heard.

Remember me telling you that I would meet my friend from around the corner, Charles Sangley. Well you don’t see anybody you know at all because theres over 20,000 marines all over this large, island and each of us as long as we’re in “boot camp” can’t go any place except where designated. But yesterday marching to the mess hall I see + hear this marine all ducked out in dress outfit yell, “Hey Clarke” and run like _ _ _ _ _ _ over to me when I’m still in ranks. Who was it but Langley! I never felt so thrilled since I’ve been here. You don’t know what a homelike feeling came over me when I saw him. I could not let a smile or turn my head in ranks but I guess he got my flittery in my eyes to wait for me out side of mess. He did. Boy we did everything but kiss each other, we rolled and hit each other all over the deck. You see, most everybody leaves at the end of 30 days training for an other station and I thought that Charlie had left. But he is stationed with the Ballour Barrage Station here. I don’t feel so awfully lonesome now. It certainly was a boost.

We have a new D.I. as an assistant and he is tougher than tough. Here is an example. Yesterday we had to clean our mess kits and have them laid out on our cots just in the right uniform position, each fork and canteen facing just so and so many inches between each. So he came in and we immediately snapped to attention. Well that son of a so and so looked at each one and gave 10 out of 13 a kick with his foot and they went all over the deck. I was one of the 3 that must have had everything just 100%. But here is whats funny. All us fellows are very humorous in this but, and when I saw a little guy’s by the name of Le Mouse mess kit all over I couldn’t hold in the big laughter I was holding in any longer so I went “hawruffpled.” The miserable crab turned around and asked “Who did it?”. Well my face was red as a beet and I thought I wasn’t grinning but he yelled “What’s so blanky funny about this?” Well I was so scared when he yelled at me. I couldn’t have laughed at the funniest joke out. I said very seriously “Nothing Sir.” I thought I would get K.P. or the brig, but he saw I was bigger than he was. Haw-haw!!

It doesn’t pay to try to keep anything in one piece down here. During the skirmishes yesterday I fell down on the deck so blame hard I smashed my wrist watch all to the devil. Later during the same attack in creeping my bracelet bent in two halves and my bayonet broke off its belt holder just when the hand to hand fighting was to take place. Ah yes! For the life of a marine!! Sometimes I wonder!!

I hope to have some pictures for you soon as I just gave them to Charlie. They will be screams, I know if they come out.

Has anybody asked you out on a date yet kid? I’m wondering. I can’t tell anything about you yet having not received any mail yet.I might just as well be in jail. If I was in jail I would at least get mail. I like to know what they mean when the U.S.O. says the letters from home keep the morale of the boys up. I know most of us feel as tho we’ve been exiled. The ones that get mail only get one letter, and that came 3 days ago. Its tragic.

Do I miss those beautiful nights we spent together on dates and the long chats we would have parked outside your lovely home. Wouldn’t the time fly when we would sit there? Your soft face and hair against mine, oh! Yes those beautiful shaped lips and their touch. I can’t wait to feel them again someday your little wise and cute innocent sayings such as; -- “Was I ever cold or scared.” That form fitting bay colored dress -- the most beautiful eyes in the world and the most easy going disposition. Every millionth of a second I ever was with you certainly was the best time in my life. I’ll do everything while I’m here darling, so that  it will be for you and I in the future. I’ll work and take orders like a slave so that I’ll get ahead for you. I hope you believe me. It comes from the deepest roots of my heart. This sounds rather funny to you coming from a tough marine. I guess but nobody in this world can change a fellows love for his little girl.

I sent only a postcard yesterday because I was sick in bed still from the fever and a sore throat, but I feel excellent today.

As I wrote in the corner of the card, we leave for “destination unknown” March 3/42. We go to the range the 15th next week and return the 28th. I don’t lnow if they will tell me about my aviation test before the rest of the platoon goes or not. If I passed I most likely won’t be sent to “destination unknown” but to some flying station. I hope I have passed. Ever since I joined they keep you in suspense in everything.

Right now the boys have mostly finished their letters and have started a tin alley band with the pails, mess kits, and rifle slings. They slap the rifle slings like they were bass fiddles. What a bunch of nit wits I’m as bad also. They can’t understand how I can write so much. Most of them write only 3 pages at the most.

Do you see Eleanor and Larry at all? Tell me how everybody is and what they are doing.

Pvt. Vlosky and myself are the only engaged marines in our platoon. He comes from New Haven and is a swell fellow. We both lay awake night long after everybody is asleep and bring up pleasant memories about our sweethearts. We talk by the hour about you. We were singing, from “Taps Hill Reveille”. Boy those words certainly mean a lot to us fellows. We get kidded a lot but they just don’t understand what true love is. The rest have girls but that’s all none serious tho. And that makes a big difference.

Is the “Big Boy” as full as it used to be in the mornings? Is Bill in the army? How’s “lacey britches” Connors? And “Fast Stuff” Wells?

What do you think? Just this instant the mail came!! My first. We all went nuts. I received the one you sent Feb. 6, two days ago. Boy I’m a changed man! I’ve already it 5 times already. Its swell. Please forget my remarks in previous letters about not sending mail. Oh boy I’ve changed to the happiest marine here. Write often darling!! I will. Hope you have gotten all mine. I will eventually get yours too. What date did you get my first letter. I wrote one or two every night since I’ve been here. Did you get the pillow?

O.K. Henry! I’l ltake care of his little wagon! I can sleep in peace tonight after the letter.

Mac also sent one. He’s a pip! I guess from now on it will be regular.
