The day before our big event, this… I happen to be with two doctors, holistic health practitioners when I was the gym and noticed after training shoulders muscles. I went heavier on a new exercise that likely caused it. First time ever! They said it will heal on its own and not to be too alarmed. I was intensional when I posed for photos during our wedding reception which worked perfectly because the poses favored my “good side”. Ha! “Seeing a spot of red in your otherwise white eyeball can be alarming. Many of us refer to these as burst blood vessels in the eye—the technical term for it being “subconjunctival hemorrhage.” In other words, it’s a delicate blood vessel in your eye that has broken—for one reason or another. Often, this condition looks more alarming than it really is, but when should you see a doctor? What causes broken blood vessels? Burst blood vessels in the eye happen when a tiny blood vessel breaks just underneath the conjunctiva, which is the clear surface of your eye. The exact cause of them is unknown, but it is suspected that instances of increased blood pressure such as sneezing or coughing violently, heavy lifting or even laughing forcefully can lead to this condition.” (Ref: Mississippi Eye Care) Anyways, it did not hurt and zero negative impact on my vision. I gained a lot during the pandemic—not the kind of “weight” most will assume reading that first part. Many of the big news agencies published similar outcomes from studies and surveys. 18 to 50 of unwanted pounds showed up on bathroom scales. Averages were anywhere from 26-29 pounds depending on the article. For me, my gains were in strength. Once the gyms opened up again, I set a goal to step back onto the powerlifting platform which was delayed by a year. Straight leg deadlifts transformation… Oct 11, 2020 - 40 pounds: Gym’s finally open again August 22, 2021 - 100 pounds: Training cycle starts September 11, 2021 - 135 pounds: One month away from competition The fun part was watching how my body composition (body fat to lean muscle ratio) would show up as I gained back strength. Today, my coach evaluated my progress and technique and said, “You’re on track and you can still make those lifts in your program.” His words were beautiful notes of music that will play in my spirit these next three weeks of focused, relentless dedication to my vision to get back on that platform after five years of sidelining myself from powerlifting. On February 20, 2016 (see photo), I competed in my first meet after an 8-week training cycle and had no clue what happened. I just did what I was told and all the sudden a medal was around my neck. I was in complete shock. It’s time for me to put the same trust and faith in the process and do the do. I don’t completely understand the science behind the programming yet but I will follow it because of the world champions the programming has developed. Never in a million years would I ever have thought that lifting very heavy objects would be my thing. After several motor vehicle collisions, injuries at the hands of violent men, and all the self-doubt instilled by personal trainers. Other well-meaning and over-cautious health practitioners also warned me to avoid lifting heavy. I’m not sure the exact date it all started for me, but the first time a business partner told me that I could not complete in sports while achieving success in my business endeavors—lit something inside me that no one has been able to dim no matter the odds against me. In fact, since that day that the man discounted my scrappy, fighter within, I have made it my mission to prove him wrong. Legacy… Daily, I am purposefully building a legacy. And often, as I write chapters of my autobiography, I am passionately consumed with how I want the final chapters to play. One thing for sure, life is short. Losing loved ones recently and witnessing the destruction of a deadly virus made me evaluate my priorities ask God for clarity. Balance, Strength and Flexibility: Yesterday, I did three things that would have put me in a bed-ridden state for weeks with my past lifestyle. I ate processed and fast food several times daily, smoking cigarettes, and my only fitness activity was walking to the car. 15 years ago, my metabolic health would not have allowed me to accomplish even one thing on the list below, let alone ALL THE THINGS in one day. Cra-cray! Actually, walking up and down hills in downtown Seattle hurt my knees so badly and the word “gym” was not in my vocabulary. I know you are in utter and complete shock reading the lifestyle I left behind after my pre-cancer diagnosis. Letting Go… I decided to let go of somethings during the 2020 shakedown: 👉🏽Wrinkles 👉🏽People pleasing 👉🏽Toxic Relationships 👉🏽DOMS - delayed onset muscle soreness If this past year did not wake you up or shake you down, I pray that something else will. Pivots can open the door toward positive transformation. For some, they just get more bitter and place blame. It’s all a matter of perspective. I’m so thankful and feel blessed to have new opportunities for growth. Live Young Lifestyle… What started out being a meal plan, nutrition and fitness regimen we promoted for years—has genuinely become a part of our LIFESTYLE. As athletes and weekend warriors, longevity protocols are an investment. One of the commitments I made to myself in 2020 is to live out the mantra of creating legacy. Part of that is finding balance and implementing self-care practices that help improve our quality of life for the long-term. We love our LIVE YOUNG LIFESTYLE and plan to continue to participate in activities that bring us joy while preserving lean muscle mass, joints and connective tissue. Enhancing performance and faster recovery are a happy dance. The most advanced breakthrough in cell communication and having the best raw materials on board the body can use to rebuild, repair and rejuvenate—have been key to that happy dance. Mitch partially tore his rotator cuff and had tendinosis three months ago, but was able to play hard this weekend. He thought he would have to quit wind sports and tennis. He’s 61. I sprained my shoulder in late winter and pulled my hip-flexor three weeks ago and had zero issues during my SUP (stand up paddle) board lesson.
