Over the past ten years, Danny Fenton’s life has been a whirlwind, and that’s an understatement. Nonetheless, despite being the Ghost King and a consultant for the JLD as Phantom, Danny’s life is ordinary. Or as ordinary as a halfa king could manage.

Danny remembers being 17 and feeling so helpless and overwhelmed, especially when Jazz moved away for college. He didn’t expect that to be the end of his struggles. His sister coming back for Christmas break with the Justice League in tow was not on his bingo card, nor were his parents and Vlad being tried for supervillainy or the Anti-Ecto Acts and the GIW being a hoax. However, according to Tucker, the most surprising part of their senior year was their trio graduating with near-perfect attendance and good grades.

Nowadays, life is good for Danny. While his responsibilities as the High King of the Infinite Realms and his attachment to his haunt keep him from leaving Amity Park, he has found balance. After his identity as Phantom was revealed to the town, the community rallied in support of the half-dead teenager who saw his parents go to jail. Following Jazz’s insistence, he has enrolled in an online Astronomy and Engineering degree, which he finds much easier than high school. He doesn’t even have to worry about money, being the new owner of FentonWorks and DalvCo.

All in all, life is, finally, cutting the halfa some slack, which is why he now has more free time to fill, ergo his current situation. Sam, Tucker and Jazz are debating on his computer screen about what hobby he should try.

“Danny, dude, I’m telling you, you should take programming classes. We could make our own video game and-“Tucker’s excited rant cuts off as Jazz mutes the both of them.

“After the ecto-contamination of everyone in Amity, you’ll probably find a lot of people willing to join an environmentalist group. You know my activism rubbed off on you.” Sam’s voice is almost covered by the deep sigh that escapes Tucker and Danny can’t help but smile at his best friends’ antics.

“You guys, we’re trying to figure out something Danny would like. Baby brother, what is something you’d like to do ?” Danny can’t help but miss his sister when he sees her exasperated smile at his friends’ insistence that he tries something they like.

Leaning against his desk, his face in his hand, he shrugs, a bit embarrassed. “Actually, I did have an idea but I’m not sure.” On his screen, his sister’s face is open and supportive, meanwhile, Sam and Tucker don’t seem to have noticed they were inaudible. “I, maybe, wanted to try streaming ? You guys obviously don’t have as much time to play video games with me and it’s really not the same on my own… I like the idea of finding a community of people who enjoy listening to my weird space and ghost rants without having to leave Amity. Not that the Parkers aren’t my friends but—” He pushes his hair out of his face with a sigh, looking up at the ceiling. “I guess I want to meet new people ? But I don’t actually want to meet them.”

“That sounds great, Danny.” Jazz, supportive as always, finally unmutes the two.

“Yeah dude, I’m down to help you set it all up. You’re gonna need equipment-“

“And you’re gonna need to ectoproof it too. Are you going to hide your identity ? Acting like ghosts and your powers are the norm would be so funny.”

“Right, you could ask a ghost artist to make your channel art. You clearly already have a niche thing going, you know ?” His Fraid’s excitement makes Danny feel more confident in his idea.

“What do you guys think of the name CosmicSpecter ?”

Jason has been back in Gotham for about two years. His relationship with his family is still strained but it is improving. He has a good thing going with Red Hood and his gang. However, he is still plagued by the Pit Madness, despite his best efforts he still doesn’t feel like himself. Meanwhile, everyone around him has accepted, however reluctantly, that this is who he is now, but Jason refuses to. He knows this isn’t him, but he is resigned that the foreign rage trying to control him will torment him until his (next) dying breath.

Maybe it’s fate, maybe it’s boredom, maybe it’s the scary TubeYou algorithm that has him clicking on the livestream thumbnail while tittering close to the Pit Rage. The guy has 463 subscribers and 6 current viewers and he’s halfway through a burrito when Jason joins. The light is dim, and his eyes seem to be reflecting the light. A meta, maybe ?

“Hiya ‘botched-resurrection’, nice to see a fellow undead here.” He takes a swig of a too green liquid from a soda bottle and flashes the camera with a wide smile. “We’ll go back to playing once I’m done eating. This new joint opened a few years ago, since our town isn’t under a fake government lockdown anymore, and honestly, I’m pleasantly surprised. My sister is probably relieved I’m eating something other than a burger.” The guy’s eyes widen slightly when a $20 donation comes through from one ‘jazz_hands’. “Really Jazz ? ‘Twenty whole American dollars in hopes you’ll eat healthier food one day’. There are real vegetables in here you know ? You’re being too harsh. Also stop sending me money as an excuse to embarrass me on stream.”

Streamer Danny AU, but he’s a really minor streamer. Like, he does it mainly just for his own fun and only has a few intermittent viewers.

But somehow Jason finds his channel anyway, and something about his voice is captivating. The pit rage quiets down in his presence. So he starts tuning in to basically every stream, or just putting on the VODs in the background to fall asleep to.

And on the other side, Danny takes note of this new subscriber who’s quite possibly his first truly dedicated viewer. So he starts interacting with him on stream sometimes - greeting him when he shows up in the chat, specifically asking/answering questions, etc

Needless to say, this did not help Jason’s growing semi-parasocial crush in the slightest…

alden, he called himself. he didn’t have lots of viewers, though you remembered some of his clips going viral once or twice. he still seemed content with his lack of fame though, and you could guess he wasn’t expecting to be popular anyways as the games he played were very niche, and did go unnoticed by the mainstream. you, however, liked exploring the pits of the internet, finding weird websites and lurking abandoned forums everyday. being an unemployed loser let you know all about the media. and for some odd reason, your favorite part about this addiction was when you got a notification from his channel. “denonthebeat IS LIVE NOW!” how you liked clicking on it in a heartbeat. how you liked listening to him ramble about his not-so-funny life stories. you couldn’t help but think how similar you two were most of the time—considering your almost identical music taste and the way you laughed at the same things, how his audience kept calling him a socially inept loser that needed a life.

he was the man in your dreams, and it was a tragedy he didn’t know your existence. hell, he probably didn’t even know your nickname, let alone the adoration you had for him. but, there was nothing you could do except being a ghost and watching him interact with a bunch of people who seem to like consuming the sort of content. because deep down, you know him acknowledging you wasn’t going to change much except that he would be familiar with your nickname maybe.

but the point was, your obsession over him wasn’t decreasing. you didn’t seem to grow away from him. and that was the one and only problem as for now —except getting a job and moving out, of course— and there was nothing to do about it. you couldn’t go and tell him you liked his content, or that you would like to get to know him on a deeper level. you were close friends in your world, maybe even closer than close friends. in reality, he was just another loser with a questionable digital footprint.

and when he answered one of the questions on live, your whole world turned into a dystopia, an unfamiliar bitter taste left in your tongue. you were making it too big of a deal, you knew it, yet, this screen was all you had—-a small utopia you have created. it’s full of suffering, but you’ve always considered yourself a girl full of hope. this world, the screen, was too small for you to explore, but he made it seem bigger, full of colors. so when he answered, you didn’t know what to do.

“oh, well, love is confusing, you see.” he shrugged. “there is this girl I’ve had the biggest crush on, and I can say that adoring someone often leaves you confused. but it makes you more ecstatic.” he said. there was a different kind of light in his eyes, or so you assumed. “so ecstatic that you get the urge to create. like, when you cannot get your feelings reciprocated, you just, well, you just go and create something out of that love.” he added. a heavy ache on your chest, the urge to vomit. the urge to tell him to fuck off and report his account for bullying. as if. as if he knew you. as if.

“anyway. if you feel like they show some signs, I’d say go for it. my situation is rather different though.” he smiled. he seemed hurt though, that much was recognizable, even through the screen. “or create something, if it feels too heavy to carry. I mean, I solely make content because of her— since I can’t seem to distract myself from being a sappy loser.” he laughed. hell, this was your favorite part of him, the way he wore his heart on his sleeve often made you admire him. this was what you hate him about the most, he wore his heart on his sleeve.

the comments calling him a loser and making fun of didn’t seem to affect him, as he was reading some of them and sneering.

“what is she like? oh… well, I don’t want you to clip this and upload it on youtube calling me a loverboy, pass.” he said. this could’ve been a fun topic if you weren’t oh-so-fucking in “love” with him. others were having fun though, as they kept spamming questions about it. “why the fuck is everyone so nosy with it?” he laughed. and you agreed. why can’t he just shut up about it and play your favorite game? or watch stupid videos and react to them? this was the first ever time you contemplated leaving the stream. the first ever time you didn’t have fun. “where did I meet her? take a fucking guess pal. over the internet, of course.” he, once again, answered another question. fucking loser, you mumbled, as if your situation was any different. as if you didn’t live on the internet. “we live in the same city though, she’s just too much of a loser to go out,” he added. you frowned. you weren’t going to listen to him ramble about this person any more, so you just closed the tab. you had better things to do anyways, like replaying your favorite game. the one he also seemed to like a lot.

“what the hell?” he cussed out, seeming puzzled. “she fucking left.” he kept clicking on random buttons as the chat went crazy over the whole situation. “dumbass.” he said, clearly annoyed. questions from the followers didn’t seem to stop. “oh my god, of course it’s not her,” he answered the allegations, “I was talking about my sister who was supposed to be a moderator.” he lied quickly. he didn’t even have a sibling to begin with, but he didn’t want you to have any suspicions as he had a very little follower list. “well, that’s all for today anyway,” he got ready to end the stream.

and well, it was true that you “met” on the internet. but that wasn’t the only time you did, nor was it the first time.

he was running out of time, he believed. when the teacher was asking dumb questions to how to get to know someone and pairing students up. “ask your partner how you break the ice.” she said, putting you two up. it wasn’t the way to strike up a conversation, that was for sure, and in an ideal world he wouldn’t have to do that anyway, since these people kept blabbering about their hobbies and stuff he couldn’t care less about. so when he turned his seat so he could talk to you, he wasn’t expecting anything. 5 minutes left.

“well, in my o—“ he was interrupted when you stood up. he looked up at you as you asked for permission to go to the bathroom. 4 minutes left. at least you were also on his side in this battle. well, socially awkward kids were everywhere, no? he knew you weren’t going to come back, realizing you’d been looking at the clock and contemplating leaving. you had squinted your eyes, hand on your chin— you decided to leave.

3 minutes left. he took a peek at his classmates, their awkward glances darting towards each other. the other pair next to him was doing fine. the girl –though she looked wimpy at first– was holding her own, keeping the conversation going and checking in with her partner’s opinion. 2 minutes left.

right then, you came back to the class. ready to pick up your bag and get out of here. you sat down, collecting your stuff. and although you two were on the same side, he still wanted an answer. he was not having fun here, and might as well make it everyone’s –everyone he had to interact with, to be precise– problem.

“what do you do to break the ice?” he asked.

you can’t escape from your fate, you thought to yourself.

“well, try to find hobbies you both share, ask them questions, stuff like that,” you answered, not hesitating to give the most cliché answer. “how about you?” you asked, repeating the question. 1 minute left. “you wanna go grab a coffee?” he offered.

“valid answer.” you replied, thinking it was just another example. you were ready to leave the class, and he couldn’t help but give a quiet chuckle. you weren’t sure what to make of it. “yeah, yours wasn’t exactly ‘valid’ though,” he snickered.

“why not?”

the second he opened his mouth to answer, the bell rang. you didn’t even wait for an answer, and there was an unbreakable ice there, or maybe unmeltable in a sense. but, either way, he was having fun. maybe he was really wasting time in this class, in this school, but maybe, he could make it at least somewhat enjoyable. the following days were as dull since you had been absent for the week. the next week, when the class was finally familiar with each other, you attended the lesson. socially awkward kids everywhere, yet he wasn’t sure if you were shiesty or just didn’t care about the situation. you still didn’t put any effort, that was the only recognizable thing about you. and you didn’t appreciate it when he tried to help you out here and there. you gave out a fake smile, thank you, you muttered, and go on with your simple life.

you reminded him of himself, the only difference being you didn’t try to make fun of socially awkward kids. and you weren’t as curious about him as he was about you. your goddamn phone and that one notebook you kept scribbling in made it hard for him to reach out.

so as the most educated Joelologist I know, when did Vienna become his most popular song? I grew up with parents who saw him multiple times in the 70s, he is my childhood, and it's a great song, but it's never been one I knew as like most famous? Yet it tops streaming charts and wins all polls. Did some film/tv show/fandom grab onto it and have a revival? But I feel like in my life so many other songs have been bigger for him

I'm not sure the exact year because time is a soup, but within the last three years or so. It had already taken off in popularity by the time I saw him in January 2023 because it was in the setlist and he commented on it but it's grown more since then I think. But I want to say around 2022? Zanzibar had a trend on the cursed clock app in I think 2021 and I think the Vienna ascent happened shortly after that. I remember some people on twitter being aware of it in 2021 but I think it was still more niche.

It was used in 13 Going on 30 which is probably a big part of it but it's not clear why it took almost 20 years after the movie came out in 2004 for the song to take off. Maybe because of streaming and social media.

You are correct that it was never one of his most famous songs!!!! It was never a single. It was always a popular favorite among serious fans (the breakfastgenies of the past) and it's one of his personal favorites but it was kind of the classic hidden gem. I have mixed feelings about it being so big now honestly!! Yeah it's one of his best songs but it wasn't meant for this! And I don't want him to get tired of it although he still likes You May Be Right and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant so we could be okay there. But it was just not meant to be one of two Billy Joel songs people know!!! It's kinda funny when people find out Vienna isn't on any of the greatest hits compilations until 50 Years of the Piano Man in 2022. They released an animated music video for it last year and people were shocked there wasn't a video for it before.

I think the videos definition of what centrist means is way too broad, but I think the message of Arcane is centrist even from the normie definition of centrist (ie good people on both sides, even bad people have good aspects, even good people can go bad).

Arcane is absolutely a show by pretty mainstream people written for a very mainstream audience. Which is precisely why they probably think of themselves as pretty lefty, because they likely live and work in a very mainstream if not actively conservative context and within that context they would be considered as doing lefty things by having a lesbian sex scene, designing Vi for a lesbian gaze or insinuating that Jinx and Silco aren't all bad.

It's of course not up to snuff to a hard leftist audiences, but again, why would you ever think you were the target audience? All the election results show that these views are pretty niche and even within the context of target audiences: the first and foremost target audience of Arcane were male gamer League of Legends fans. And I don't think that the writers were trying to gussy up that audience, but I think that audience was still very much on their mind (it's there in a lot of Christian interviews in particular). "Will the League gamers be mad at us if we design Vi to be not male gaze sexy? Better sweeten the deal for them with cool fight scenes!"

I'm just still genuinely floored why some of those hard leftists fans would rally around Vi? The text of the show is aggressively soft on Piltover in season 1 and Vi is one of the major mouthpieces of it!

It's just so weird to me how in the leftist ideology Vander is the evil traitor pig for ... making a deal with enforcers so they hopefully mostly leave Zaun alone. And Vi meanwhile makes deals with enforcers to go hunt down a fellow Zaunite, killing fellow Zaunites for being guards in Silco's factory and getting slews of people arrested for having jobs in Silco's factories.

All while constantly saying things that sound like what her biggest problem is not that Piltover oppreses them but that there isn't more intervention from Piltover!

Like at least Vander still carried on Silco's ideology that Piltover and Zaun should be largely seperate.

Vi is constantly talking like the big problem is that Piltover doesn't think enough out Zaun doesn't look enough at the problems of Zaun. (and yes Caitlyn says the same thing "Even though we failed her in countless ways, she risked everything to show me what life is really like down there." and "It's a misunderstanding.", "This city needs healing.") Both Caitlyn and Vi are mouthpieces for "Piltover and Zaun just need to kiss and make up". Vi is a key voice of "Piltover's problem is that it's uninformed and inconsiderate, not that it's oppressive and exploitative".

I think the writers thought that it was just obvious that Piltover is nice/better... they just forgot to actually put that into the text for the most part. But in their heads I wouldn't rule out that it's a conflict between like hard left (Silco/Jinx) and normie left (Piltover) versus actual fascists (Noxus/Ambessa). Because they are normies they of course don't buy into the idea that the normie state of being is the same as fascism (but also forget that most normie left doesn't include bridge riot/massacres and that little accountability as the Arcane setting has, but that Piltover just isn't a democracy, it's a merchant oligarchy, which might be progressive within the setting where most places around are active monarchies, but it's still pretty unjust for most contemporary people).

I actually think that season 1 veers way closer to a soft leftie fairytale where "Piltover and Zaun needs to just make up" and Jinx is the misguided, indocrinated girl who needs to be brought back.

Despite its messy politics, season 2 is actually way more against that fluffy narrative in how it takes Jinx's side, puts Silco into the good AU and of course shows Caitlyn going dark.

I just think they thought of it as their appraoch to balance where they portrayed Piltover and Caitlyn as mostly good/wellmeaning while showing Zaun's dark side and now they show that Caitlyn/Piltover can also have "a weak moment" and go dark.

They don't see that as "Piltover was fascist in season 1 and in season 2 they double down", they probably genuinely thought Piltover was mostly fine and understanding in season 1.

And yes, they generally demphasized Jinx's violence in season 2 as they make her a hero, but again, yes they are centrists/normies, so that's what they do when they make somebody a hero. Because they are not leftist edgelords enough to lean into "yes she's a sadistic terrorist and we're gonna lean into that and celebrate that". Because again, mainstream people producing for a mainstream audience. It just isn't statistically feasible that you would have like hundreds of employees who have exactly that point of view being given 100 million dollars and not a single person in the process (we know that Arcane was extensively shown around within Riot for years) would have objections.

People really wanted to believe into a 10 year 100 million dollar secret sting operations by leftist to sneak in hard left talking points to troll both their financiers and the mainstream audience? That's just not statistically feasible and imo the worldbuilding in season 1 was way too Piltover friendly and generally not that interested enough in hard world building for me to buy it was written by people with a keen eye and hard opinion on the world.

Normies wanting just a little flavor of rebellious and revolution is fully in character. It's the people wearing the Che Guevara t-shirt because it looks cool and feel rebellious but don't know a lick about his politics or know any of his actions or would subscribe to all of the if they did.

I think Arcane still feels leftie but as a "conversation within the left" not as a heroic tale of the heroic hard leftists against the evil oppressors or a tale that takes the position that soft or normie leftists are exactly the same as actual oppressors and fascists. Which again not surprising since the people working for big gaming companies and mainstream tv are much more likely to be normie leftists.

But the idea that hard left and normie left have a discourse and hash out their differences is a fairly leftist audience topic. And yes since it's being written by people from the normie left it is more likely to be wistful or hopeful about reconciliation.

And again if you read it more as a mid lefty tale, season 2 in particular actually shows quite a bit of restraint. Because we don't get a clean happy ending where Vi&Cait make up with Jinx and live happily ever after and we can see Jinx be cool with Piltover and vice versa. Yes we get that moment where Jinx and Cait have a conversation but it's hardly happy preppy kiss and make up. Because we don't get to see Piltover and Zaun characters together in the AU and have that presented as the better world. We don't see Ekko singing Piltover's praises.

(heh, I remember our discussions specifically where based on the content of season 1 I was convinced that Arcane would stay on its full on normie course and you were the big believer that Arcane would pivot to Jinx as the main hero while I thought that Amanda wouldn't let them stray from Vi as the main; so I clocked Arcane as fully normie in season 1 and you had more faith. And since I went in with normie expectations, for me season 2 was a lot less normie than I expected. Like things I thought were at least feasible in season 2 that didn't happen:

Vi and Cait do heroic things for Piltover and Zaun as enforcers showing how good enforcers are

general gesturing at how Cait will reform the enforcers as sheriff

Ekko being pro-Piltie (more active team up or defending them)

Silco being painted more negatively (either the reason for the Betrayal being that he was too dangerous or more blame being thrown at him for the state of Jinx or the state of Zaun after his death)

Again, I don't think that Arcane was every written as a political allegory. I think it was primarily written as letting characters bounce off each other in an interesting setting. And yes they wanted the characters be influenced and informed by the settings, but I don't think they ever thought hard about what the implications would be for the settings. I think they were mostly thinking about characters being put in interesting situations. Not tight world building or delivering a thought out political message. They have a message but it's a very generic emotional one (ie circles of violence bad, don't judge people, all kinds of people have good sides and bad sides).

I do still think a good chunk from the revolutionary flavor comes more from the art team than from the writing team. So the idea that it's more aesthetics than substance has some merit.

the other half to my “Piper has sectoral heterochromia” headcanon is that she also has hazel eyes alongside the heterochromia and the Argo 2 crew just also doesn’t know how hazel eyes work, because they’re teenagers and its funny and makes sense for them to be A Little Dumb about some things. And hazel eyes tend to confuse people anyways. They just think she has like. Special Eyes™ or something. They think her eyes change color cause they don’t know that hazel eyes just look different depending on the light. And also Percy’s eyes do change color so they figure if one person on the ship already has color-changing eyes then Piper can too.
