This is a personal passion of mine, so I'm more than happy to oblige!
I'll start with in-detail looks at two of my family's cultures:
Not quite a full list of deities but one of my favorite recent reads is about how deities/spirits in Chinese folk religion stay relevant for their worshipers. It's a fantastic look into the practice. This video from ReligionForBreakfast also goes into detail about the topic, specifically Mazu's worship.
Not quite gods or spirits (yeah I know I'm not staying strictly in the parameters but this is interesting) but Mexico has a lot of folk saints. It's a little hard to find sources in English, but this list and this list (which also includes actual saints) are good to start with. ReligionForBreakfast also has videos covering two of the biggest folk saints. (I'd recommend that channel just overall, he goes into detail for a large variety of religions.)
A little more broad now, I'll share all the directory/encyclopedic websites I have bookmarked:
General
Internet Sacred Text Archive - A classic website, it's limited to public domain texts but there's still plenty to be found there.
Godchecker - Encyclopedia dedicated just to listing gods. The sources can be a little dubious at times but it's a great place to start a deep dive.
Digital Maps of the Ancient World - Website that covers history overall, but has a sizeable mythology section. This website is good for picture references.
/r/AskHistorians - As seen in my first deep dive above, AskHistorians is one of my favorite places to scroll through. Very strictly moderated, all of the answers provided are top notch and typically have sources to back them up. While obviously covering all history, they get a lot of questions about religion and mythology, of which I've linked to their frequently asked questions section on the subject.
Culture-Specific
Theoi Project - Greco-Roman mythology. I like that each page list out all the text references to the deity/spirit in question.
Völuspá.org - Norse mythology. Has the neat feature of displaying the English translation side-by-side with the original text.
Germanic Mythology - Take a guess. The website owner's personal works are interesting reads.
Obscure Goddess Online Directory - Women are a culture I think. Dedicated to exactly what the title says, covers obscure goddesses from a few different cultures.
Yokai.com - Japanese folk belief. The Yokai Finder feature makes searching for specific types of yokai really easy.
China Beasts & Legends - Chinese folk belief. It's a work in progress, but what is there looks great already.
Fox Index - Specifically about Asian fox spirits. It's sadly abandoned, but the resources that the owner did gather are great.
I’m in the mood to learn about a new set of gods or spirits from any culture. Give me a link to a rabbit hole for me to fall down. Doesn’t matter the culture or country. I just want to learn about the drama between divine creatures that I don’t already know. Text, video or audio. I’ll take it all. 🤩
#This fixation doesn't come up as much as some others do on my blog but I assure you it's just as intense#folklore#religion#resources#Sid posts

The Moscow Fiasco
At the prodding of @quonunc, here is a quick overview of the incident I fondly referred to as "the Moscow fiasco" in a previous ask about the difference between Catholicism and Orthodoxy. It's a subject dear and horrifying to my heart after I wrote my undergrad dissertation on it.
In short: this is to do with how the Moscow Patriarchate (Russian Orthodox Church, hereafter ROC) is entirely in bed with the Russian government, and how Patriarch Kirill (of Moscow and All Russia) has been responding to the ongoing situation in Ukraine (and former Soviet lands more generally). Picture will make sense lower down the post.
The slightly longer short answer is that Patriarch Kirill is entirely in favour of the Ukraine war, and the ROC clergy are under significant pressure to support that as an official church stance-- my dissertation topic started to germinate when, completely by accident, I came across a 10-minute video of a ROC priest explaining very slowly and carefully that when he met the Pope, he did not talk about Ukraine. Will link this video if I can find it again, but at present it's proving elusive. (EDIT: found it!!! It was the Metropolitan Hilarion of Budapest and Hungary. This video looks like a hostage video honestly £10 says there's someone behind the camera holding a gun to this man's head for legal reasons this is a joke).
The foundation for this belief is obviously completely political (and the history of how the ROC and Russian state are completely entwined is long and complicated to say the least!), but officially the ROC stance is that it's about reclaiming the historic Slavic spiritual unity founded on the Baptism of Rus' in the year 988 by Vladimir the Grand Prince of Kievan Rus' when Slavdom become Orthodox. Proponents of this "Russian World" theory (Russkiy Mir') basically argue that it's the influence of the West that has fractured the unified Slavic people into different, opposing nations, and that by "liberating" Ukraine of this alien ideology of nationhood, the Slavic Orthodox world will regain its historic unity under the common banner of Orthodoxy. All I will say on this is that these people have a very rosy view of Kievan Rus', but that's a post for another day.
This has obviously caused friction within the Orthodox world. Ukraine now has two Orthodox churches-- the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, which is in communion with the Ecumenical Patriarch in Constantinople, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, which is in communion with the Russian Patriarchate. They are not in communion with each other, and Constantinople's decision to grant autocephalous status to the OCoU caused Moscow to schism with Constantinople. Constantinople is also accusing Moscow of heresy (specifically, ethno-phyletism). Moscow obviously denies this. Obvious question for the Catholics among us-- does this mean Russian Orthodox christians are no longer Orthodox? No, because schisms between Orthodox churches are not particularly unusual, and they remain within the general cloud of Orthodox communion links.
The whole mess is then immortalised in the absolute monstrosity that is the Main Cathedral to the Russian Armed Forces, which is what I wrote my diss on. The YouTube video linked there is promotional material from Russian military-themed TV channel Звезда, and is one of the better sources of info on it-- a lot of English-language sources contain a lot of incorrect information on it-- either because they don't understand the cultural background, or just straight up lies from the Russian govt propaganda arm--, so take anything they say with a grain of salt. Kirill then gives televised sermons from this cathedral in which he talks about the glorious Russian martyrs of the Ukraine invasion, does his best to harmonise Stalinism and Orthodoxy, and oversees military parades for national holidays. This cathedral has a huge amount of weird symbolism and imagery, and I am super happy to talk more about the mosaics and propaganda going on there, because it's a lot (to say the quiet part out loud: pLEASE ask me more about this cathedral because the more I think about it the more scream-worthy facts about it I remember).
You may have seen memes with this picture of the Virgin Mary (below). Yeah that's from this cathedral. And it's a really really fucked up image. Like, more fucked up than you may think. Could have written my entire diss on this image alone and how shockingly awful it is. western orthobro converts who keep reblogging it as if it's somehow cool and macho are just showing how little they know and it's embarrassing.
The militarism of the ROC since this whole thing has also gone bonkers and there's a huuuuuge amount of corruption and weird stuff going on. The tension between the clergy and the laity has been extremely high for decades, and has spilled over most notably in Pussy Riot's Punk Prayer stunt, an exhibition called Осторожно, религия! (beware, religion!), and some shenanigans in church-building more generally. On this particular incident I would point to the blessing of nuclear weapons and the canonisation of a patron saint of long-range nuclear missiles as key moments. The cathedral also has matching mosaics of Putin and Stalin, a fact that the Russian government very much wants you to think never happened (officially the mosaics were removed, but they absolutely were not-- muggins here found them and has the pictures to prove it).
The main takeaway from this topic is that situation is obviously complicated and the repercussions for everyone involved-- particularly Russian and Ukrainian laypeople-- are unpleasant to say the least. It gives something of a window into the Putin regime and its propaganda arm (Epiphany swim, topless horseriding pictures, Soviet-style policies, I could go on) more than anything else, because the situation inside the ROC is still quite obscure. From talking to people who know Kirill personally, it's not clear quite what he thinks is going on or why he's involved the way he is. Either way. Fiasco.
#russian orthodox#patriarch kirill#main cathedral to the russian armed forces#christianity#askjhn#idk what else to tag bc honestly who even is reading this#certainly not russians#they're not allowed on the internet anymore#orthodox#orthodoxy

Kalafina 「sprinter」 (Yuki Kajiura LIVE Vol.#2) - Unreleased and Unedited
Update 24/09/07: The original YouTube "video" was made private so I can no longer link to it. Instead, I am including the audio which I downloaded last night from the video. Please note that even though I keep calling the original upload a "video", it is just an audio track with a picture.
Update 24/09/08: The video on YouTube is back up again. I don't notice any obvious changes so I'm not sure why it was put on private in the first place. Check it out HERE.
Update 24/09/09: Check out my UPDATE POST here. New information has been revealed that in my opinion proves that the track on YouTube is fake.
youtube
Thanks to @gslin (@gslin on Twitter) for the heads-up! A mysterious account on YouTube (@FJS_Official => which is definitely not "official" but pretends to be judging by their name and handle; The account has since changed their handle to "@FJS_Channel") has uploaded an interesting audio a couple of days ago. It is presumably from Kalafina's front act performance for "Yuki Kajiura LIVE Vol.#2" held at Shibuya O-EAST on July 31, 2008. Wakana, Keiko, Hikaru and Maya (who was still a member back then) sang 4 songs in total:
oblivious
Kizuato
ARIA
sprinter
Official footage exists of their "ARIA" and "Kizuato" performance (included as bonus content on the "Seventh Heaven" album) but up until recently, I think everyone believed that there were no live recordings of "oblivious" or "sprinter" featuring Maya (please correct me if I'm wrong in that regard).
When I initially saw the video on YouTube, I thought that this whole thing was fake. I feel like these days, any tech-savvy person can layer different audio tracks and make it sound like a brand-new live recording with a few tweaks here and there (especially if you factor in the growing popularity of AI). I mean, all you'd have to do is mix the original studio recording with Maya's vocals (or Maya's unofficial karaoke performance of the song) with one of the many existing live recordings of "sprinter" and voilà, you'd have created something like the above audio.
However, after listening to the audio a few times, I'm having a hard time recognising any specifics of the live performance. I'll admit, I'm not 100% familiar with every single "sprinter" performance since it's not exactly among my favourite songs but from what I can tell, Hikaru sounds a lot shakier than in any of the "official" live recordings that are out there. So yeah, this might indeed be "unreleased" and it appears to be as raw/unedited as it gets. I did a quick research but couldn't find anything on this topic so I don't think this has been posted before...
As @gslin has mentioned on Twitter, the sound quality is exceptionally well, too good for a bootleg (possibly recorded in an official manner close to the PA system?)
The video description says that it is a sound source preserved at Sony Music but I have my doubts about that. I wonder how the person who runs the account would just get access to it and be allowed to post it on a random YouTube channel. Sounds a bit fishy to me. If there are actually people out there who can get their hands on unreleased Kalafina audios, there would be more of them floating around (someone give me all those Christmas live sound sources!!!!).
But who knows, anything is possible. Maybe the venue had some of these sound sources stored (no idea if this is a common practice)? Shibuya O-EAST could have gotten rid of them (made them publicly available) after they rebranded the venue in 2021.

One correction: It's not GAP (what can you do with automatic translation), it's PIJ, which stands for Palestinian Islamic Jihad, a terrorist organization in Gaza, much smaller than Hamas, but also considered much more extremist.
Three points to take into account:
Even if you believe there's no humane sentiment among Israelis, Israel striking a hospital would be such a PR nightmare, that it really doesn't have any interest to do it.
The number of people killed being reported is unlike anything you've heard from any Israeli airstrike, and there's a reason for it. Hamas knows that hospitals are "protected," that Israel wouldn't strike there, so where do you think Hamas hides its headquarters and its ammunition storage? So once a PIJ rocket launched at Israel, ended up accidentally falling inside the Gaza strip, there's a good chance it hit the munition stored by Hamas in the hospital, causing a much bigger explosion than a few rockets can create on their own, and accounting for the number of dead.
In the past, when Israel did make a mistake and accidentally hit a large number of civilians, it did take responsibility for it. It took Israel quite a while (two hours) to respond to the claims that it was an Israeli strike precisely because IT TAKES TIME to make sure that there hadn't been any accidental strikes at the hospital. It doesn't take time to lie and throw the blame at someone else.
I prefer focusing on what is happening inside Israel, because those are voices that are barely shared online, but I know that Hamas didn't wait to actually find out what happened before blaming Israel, and that hatred for Israel is already being spread on and offline, so... I'm putting this out there.
Update: Here's a vid from Al Jazeera, they were filming Gaza, so they inadvertently filmed the PIJ rocket launched from Gaza, failing mid air, and then falling back down in Gaza, causing the explosion.
Update 2: Thanks to a reblog, I can add a link to even more images showing it was a failed launching within Gaza, with several different sources coming to the same conclusion.
Also, to the nonnie who asked me for a third, neutral party as a source... Al Jazeera is not neutral, it's firmly anti-Israel. They have a live stream of Gaza with clear timestamps. This is even better than a neutral source, because this is a channel with motivation to lie and vilify Israel, yet their footage ended up showing the opposite.
Update 3: There is now a picture from where the hospital took a hit. It seems that it was the parking lot.
If you click on the pic, it will take you to the Twitter thread, where people are doubting that this was the scene of 500 people dying. I don't know if it was or wasn't, but all casualty numbers coming out of Gaza? They're released by their Health Ministry, which is a part of Gaza's government. And that government is, all of it, Hamas. The same organization that massacred over 1,400 civilians in Israel.
The source is a Hamas-affiliated "news" account on Twitter.
There's now a video from inside the hospital's chapel, showing it mostly intact (other than the glass windows).
There's also a recording of two Hamas terrorists talking about the strike, where they themselves confirm that it was a rocket misfired by the PIJ. I can't embed another vid in this post, but I linked to the recording with English subtitles.

alright, i'm not sure how much of this is already commonly known but i have been investigating the source of these images:
and this video:
youtube
a comment on this blog post suggests that they were taken in sydney:
the upload date of the video also dates the events to before january 2008. we know that tucker rule and james dewees were there. the song they're singing is gloves by reggie and the full effect:
youtube
for these reasons, i THOUGHT that the photos and video were taken at the sydney entertainment center on november 30th 2011. reggie and the full effect opened for mcr that night and gloves was on their setlist:
this is backed up by this youtube comment on the dancing queen video talking about fluxuation in sydney (i unfortunately can't find the video it mentions but the channel is here):
tucker talks about playing for mcr in australia in 2007 in this podcast clip:
youtube
this was what i THOUGHT. and i was going to post this but i thought i should do a little more research just to see if i could find anything more. and i stumbled across this livejournal post:
every single image on the post is broken. but i'm pretty confident that the pictures we all know and love were in there.
^this one especially seems to line up. they were taken at a bar called the lobo plantation in sydney on november 29th 2011.
the captions of the other pictures make me SO mad that they were deleted. im so fucking curious. well thank you to deleted livejournal user theyoungpretend for (probably) being the one to post these historical images. if anyone knows of any way to access the rest pls lmk (tinypic went down and all the images hosted on there were deleted)
also this picture seems to have been taken on the same night??
here are some more (questionably worded unfortunately. like some of these are really insane) posts which mention what happened:
x (i think this may be from one of the people in the picture above?), x, x, x (hidden in. ryan ross/matt cortez fic?), x, x, x, x, x, x (masterpost where almost all the links are broken). ive saved all of these on the wayback machine in case they ever get deleted.
this iconic ray moment was the day after btw:
youtube
if anyone has any more info or any pics PLEASE let me know!!!!!!
#even if this already is common knowledge i havent seen any posts that talk abt it so . im educating the people#mcr#ray toro#tucker rule#james dewees#<- tagging those involved in the incident. i guess#there are also video links in the livejournal but im not putting those in the post out of deep sympathy for tuckers digital footprint.#im guessing 90% of people wont click the link but if anyone does or sees these tags um. there they are i guess#im SO serious abt the videos btw be normal pleaaaseeeee#ya this is what i stayed up all night for and now my head hurts. lmfao well i hope its of use to at least someone#if i notice a mistake in this after i post ill acc kms#tucker lean deep dive!

Hey lovelies. I know this recap is late-- I am having a habit of falling asleep a the end of the day now, new meds may be contributing to it, so please accept this Love Note as a start to the new day!
Everybody is trying very hard to keep each other afloat right now. We're all staying active in one way or another, whether that's sending lovely letters, or engaging in fandom fun and discourse. Sometimes it's not always fun though. We all get frustrated, we all repeat ourselves, and we all struggle with those things. Sometimes we say things we don't mean, or we say things that people misconstrue, and miscommunication can be rampant.
Just remember that we all make mistakes, and we're all human.
Take a step back.
Take a moment to breathe, go for a walk, go for food, or water, or go scream into the void.
We're all crew, and we do all care about each other even if we don't necessarily agree on things the fandom. We all have our own lives going on and outside factors that make the day to day harder, and we all need to give ourselves some grace for that too. Sometimes emotions get high and taking a step back can help, I know I've needed it lately. @areyoudoingthis reminded me of this yesterday and it really helped me feel more grounded. My brain gets overstimulated sometimes, and it's hard to break away from the thing that's overstimulating it, it's like it wants to keep going and deal with whatever is bothering it.
Just a gentle reminder that you are allowed to detach for a while. You're allowed to take a break. You're allowed to have your opinions, and your concerns, and your frustrations. You are human, and we are all so very flawed, but that's what makes us beautiful. Try not to beat yourselves up for being human.
Take a break, lean on a friend, verbally vomit frustrations into the voice or into a Safe Space Ship. Do what you need to do to get you through the day ok? We all want that. We all want YOU to be okay. If you step away, we'll be here when you get back because we love you crew. Don't forget that, even when tensions are high, we care about what happens to you, and we love you. You deserve grace too.

I recently rebloged a “For the love of god, have hobbies that aren’t consuming media or scrolling on social media all day” and I thought I could give people some resources to start doing origami and writing, which are very accessible and inexpensive. Origami
You don’t really need fancy paper, just whatever you have at home, including spam mail and already used paper. It’s more common to use a square paper but that’s easy to make. A link to a quick tutorial: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij1reuFbG48] There are two YouTube channels that have playlists for beginners.
The first one is Sweet Paper’s New Origami. It’s a Japanese channel but sometimes it has English subtitles and the instructions are visual. The playlist is called かんたん折り紙(初心者向け), the thumbnail shows “The easiest paper diamond” and the link is this one: [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLarxbewI2UKMDK_57YQoCug7EfjFVUSJf]
The second one is Kankichi. It’s also a Japanese channel and it usually has English subtitles. The playlist is called Beginner らくらく(初級) . I recommend looking at the more recent videos because the lighting is better. The link is this one: [https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLcemtuAMpogvGfaUYjT13BPo278E8hnfe]
Writing
Anyone can write, on paper, on a phone, tablet, computer, typewriter, reciting it and saving it on audio form, sending messages to a private chat with yourself... The thing is, how to start if it’s hard? This is not going to be a list on “how to write” but rather a “what can help to get you started”
Writing Exercises is a great website because it has a lot of generators (opening lines, plots, scenarios...) to set the pace. There’s also writing exercises to make you write (usually 5 minutes, 300 words, and then there are some questions) or diversify what are you writing (genres, dialogue). the link is this one: https://writingexercises.co.uk/
Specifically about computer writing, in case you don’t have a good processing application (like Word, you can change the font, size, add pictures...), try LibreOffice, it’s a free and open source office suite. The link: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download-libreoffice/

Throwback Thursday > Enzai Fan Disc [Comiket 64, 2003]
Wow, this one really is a throwback, huh? I finally found a copy of this over 20 (!) year old fan disc & had a really fun time working on this project! This was one of those discs I would always see pictures of floating around online back in the day, so it was somewhat surreal to actually see it in person after all these years. It surprisingly has a lot more content than I was expecting & even included some images that were totally new to me! I’m also happy to report that just about everything should still work on Windows 11.
Special thanks to Amu-Bun for their helpful insights regarding the calendar widget — you can check out their YouTube channel for more Enzai-related content, including a few videos that cover the contents of this fan disc. I wrote up a guide for the widget since I know some other folks out there ran into trouble while attempting to install it — it’s been included in the calendar subfolder in case you’re struggling to get it running.
Package details & link are under the cut, or you can click here for a static page.

Being busy with real life, so I just watched The Sims channel on Youtube, I found youtube video
EA what is this? l Sims 4 For Rent Expansion Pack by Matinee
Ha ha ha.
"Coconut rice"?
What the ****, EA? As a Southeast Asian I never heard of term "Coconut rice"
I asked my real friend from Malaysia, and she was confused with word "Coconut rice" too, she laughed then replied to me, "You mean Nasi Lemak? *laughing emoticon*"
^ Yes, seriously, but I cannot show her chat screenshot due to privacy.
Probably Coconut rice is word invented by Westerners or White Caucasian race. As if the word sounds like "Rice" with grated "Coconut" toppings, which sounds very misleading.
As Southeast Asian, we say dishes that have rice cooked with coconut milk in direct name of the dish, not just "Coconut milk rice" or "Nasi Santan". Malaysians call it Nasi Lemak. Indonesians call it Nasi Uduk. Thais call it ข้าวเหนียวมะม่วง (Khao Niao Mamuang) --> Thai Mango Sticky Rice
Here are pictures of Coconut Milk. For this kind of product it is called "Coconut Cream" because it has little amount of water. 100% legit my own photos I took from nearby minimarket.
By Googling "Nasi Lemak", here is the result:
How could EA, as big massive company make stupid mistake like this? Designer is not just 1 person in studio. There are Intern, Junior Designer, Senior Designer, Supervisor, Art Director. And there are a lot of people in the studio who can supervise and give feedback and advise internally. And yet they cannot Googling "Nasi Lemak" properly. What's the point of Supervisor and Art Director once again? Makan gaji buta? Eating salary without giving effort at all?
EA wrongly represented Nasi Lemak with random rice texture, but then they decided to just "renaming" it with Western/White Caucasian term "Coconut rice" instead of giving update correct Nasi Lemak mesh.
As a designer from corporate who had worked in video game company before, I can tell you this apologize is not sincere and lazy. The proper apologize is supposedly making proper new mesh update of Nasi Lemak.
CC creator, icemunmun, from India, has already created functional Nasi Lemak. CC LINK DOWNLOAD
EA is massive company releasing The Sims as AAA video game titles from The Sims 1,2,3,4 with many expensive expansion packs who brought them massive profit yet they didn't want to spend any effort to give correct proper update with one new mesh.
As if they already know they made mistake and decided to not wanting to spend any more effort because
They already gained massive profit from international sales... and don't care much about players from Southeast Asian countries including Malaysian that their content depicted wrongly in-game as they thought Southeast Asian players are not profitable enough compared to USA and European players.
Ignorance about Asian culture, instead of hiring Southeast Asian people as staff/source person who are willing to give authentic information. They non-Asian people must be thinking that "Nasi Lemak and Coconut rice are the same thing because contains coconut!!"
Yes I know EA studio who created The Sims 4 content is from U.S.A. Here I need to tell you something, U.S.A. people: We Asians, including Europeans, took food very seriously. Food is culture. If you U.S.A people depict our food wrongly, it means you insult our culture. I heard many Europeans complained about U.S.A people who don't take European food culture very seriously. What if USA flag is wrongly depicted by other flag such as Australian flag or Malaysian flag? I bet you USA people are very offended, right?
People tend to learn something from media, movies and video games. Because many Westerners don't know Nasi Lemak, they will think Nasi Lemak looks like porridge like what depicted in-game. Despite White Caucasian of British colonizer had colonized Malaysia, yet many White Caucasian people still don't know what Nasi Lemak looks like.
This is not first time EA misinterpreted Asian culture. EA has wrongly misinterpreted Chinese culture very badly in Shang Simla world.
Thank you sister Martinee for daring to speak up about this issue.
What EA depicted as "Nasi Lemak"
Looks like baby porridge I ate because I was sick.
#nasi lemak#malaysian#southeast asian#hahaha coconut rice what is that westerner?#the sims 4 for rent#electronic arts#the sims 4#santan#asian sims players#united states of america#innacuracy in video games#asian representation

#VintageTeezo, where you can find content of him pre-2020, before he evolved into the Teezo Touchdown we know him as today.
#TrinSpeaks!, where I rant and rave about Teezo myself! These are my own thoughts, opinions, and delusions lol.
Finally, we have year tags, which indicates what year the content is originally from! These tags begin in the year of our Lord 2020 and go on from there!
#2020 | #2021 | #2022 | #2023 | #2024
I also hope to have a fan content tag as well for when the fandom starts to grow on here, so when the fanfics and fan art really start to flourish on here, I would love to feature that somehow with a tag as well! So, send submissions if you want! Okay, that's all!

It is that time of the year where I start to do my annual review of the games I have played for the year. I made it sound like I have tons of annual reviews but in truth, I only did one which was last year...
(GIF Source: Imgur thru' Google Image Search)
Ahem, anyway, unlike last year where I categorised my games according to the platform which I played them on, I am going to categorise them as Completed, Currently Playing, and Anticipating. It makes more sense this way, doesn't it?
Obviously, I won't be putting all into one post because that would make it too long. I have also linked the two other posts to the respective titles above so you can just hop over to the other posts if you don't wish to read this one.
Now that's settled, on to the Completed list of games for 2023!
1️⃣ A Little to the Left
(Picture Source: Nintendo thru' Google Image Search)
A Little to the Left is one of the top cozy and organising games during the Covid period and it has excellent reviews on Steam. The only complain many players had with the game is the "unjustified" price tag for the game.
The game revolves around a couple attempting to organise and keep their house tidy but their cat, being a cat, would mess things up. Each level in the game will give you some form of satisfaction after re-organising or solving the puzzles. Of course, you will have their cat coming to mess things up occasionally.
The levels are doable but there are some that are really tricky. Many of you who may wish to play it would definitely want to solve the levels yourselves, but trust me, there are some that are so tricky that I had to google the answer.
But if you are insistent on trying to solve it yourself without any help, then here are a couple of tips. First, you can skip the level you are stuck at and go back to it at the end. I am not sure what is the control function on Switch, but if you are playing on PC, you can open the menu by pressing the ESC key and select the "Let It Be" option to move on to the next level. There is no time limit, so you can take your time to try and solve those puzzles at your own time.
Second, observe every single feature in the level, especially for those which has multiple solutions. Some are easy to solve, such as arranging it into ascending or descending order, or by colours and the like. But it is usually starting from the second solution that is tricky. The tip here is to observe every single feature in the level. Take for example, the leaves at the bottom picture below.
(Picture Source: A Little to the Left Wiki Fandom thru' Google Image Search)
At first glance, you would have guessed that the solution is by the colours. Congrats, you got your first solution, but there are more solutions to discover in this level. You will need to observe every thing in this level. Since the first solution is by colour, what else can you do to solve it? Is it by the leaf shape? Or by the length of the stems?
This is just one of the many levels that is designed as such. It may be liberating for some but there are those who may rage at not being able to figure out solution. My suggestion is to not be afraid to google the answer.
If you like to watch the gameplay of A Little to the Left, I have uploaded some videos onto my YouTube channel. The link will direct you to the playlist of the gameplay I have recorded and uploaded.
2️⃣ Death's Door
(Picture Source: Nintendo thru' Google Image Search)
Death's Door took me almost half a year to complete though the game system said that I only spent slightly over 20 hours to complete...
Anyway, this game talks about this crow that just got a job at the Reaper's Commission, and was assigned his first job. He successfully completed it but got his assigned soul stolen by another crow who has been trapped for years. Our crow chased after the older crow only to witness him sending our assigned soul to a long and large black door, to which the older crow explained that he had to do it in order for him to get his own assigned soul back. Unfortunately, the door did not budge and the older crow asked our crow for help to reap three other large souls to be used to open the door. Our crow reluctantly agreed to help.
The story of Death's Door is simple to follow as long as you pay attention to the dialogue. If not, you can just go google the story. Otherwise, the game mechanics, the UI and controls are all very simple. The only thing that may have you pulling your hair roots out is the battle.
Now, I am more of a casual player but am willing to try such games. I thought it was probably because my dodging skills was horrible but the online guide which I follow has a disclaimer at the homepage of the game guide that said you will die in battle a few times before achieving victory. Alas, it wasn't because of my dodging skills (it still sucks) but that the game was created in such a way.
Of course, it is not impossible to win the battle on the first try, but that the chances of it is quite low; I guess you could say it is a once in a blue moon effort.
If you are interested in trying the game, here are a few advice, not exactly tips, that if you allow me to give.
Firstly, don't be afraid to experiment. The thing about this game is that although the game mechanics and controls are the same for all, there are different playstyles that each player is accustomed to. Some probably swing their weapon like a maniac while some do it with a strategic calculation. Apart from that, there are also weapons you can collect throughout the gameplay, each with varying degrees of damage output. I have seen a player on YouTube use an umbrella to battle. That umbrella's damage output is only 0.5 (the sword assigned to you at the start of the game is 1). However, it seems to work for him, which kinda emphasizes my point here.
Secondly, and those most important advice here, is that surviving is more important than attacking. The boss battles, be it mini bosses or final bosses, including the Avarice, can be frustrating. It is at those points in the game where you will die countless times. Often times you may see an opportunity to attack but it could also be your demise. My suggestion is to dodge more and attack less. Sure, the battle will be dragged longer but it will increase your chances of survival better.
(Picture Source: EIP Gaming thru' Google Image Search)
Thirdly, you don't need necessarily need to achieve 100% completion rate to complete the game. The 100% completion rate is by levelling up your spells, visiting every shrine, and making sure that all pots are planted with a life seed.
While power ups and having a handy potted life seed is good, it is not necessarily needed to complete the game experience. It is possible to complete the game without any of those. Even so, I would still suggest trying to go for it because it will make your battle a tad bit easier to deal with, especially the fire spell (levelling up your fire spell will make your enemies experience continued burning damage after you throw a fire ball at them).
Final advice is to explore every nook and cranny of the map. There aren't any treasure chest with loads of goodies for you to collect, but because there may be some mass souls that you can pick up and exchange it at the vault in the Reaper's Commission for levelled up attack power.
While Death's Door was fun, I don't think I would go back to play it again because of the battle mechanics. It is really very frustrating which could prompt you to lose your interest in the game. However, it is also quite worth losing a few hairs.
3️⃣ Pokemon Scarlet
(Picture Source: Nintendo thru' Google Image Search)
I'd be honest here. At the time of writing, I have yet to complete the game. I am very confident that I could get past the Area Zero with ease but it is the Pokemon League that has me worried. My sister who completed the Violet version a long time ago advised me to level up as many different types of Pokemon as possible before I tackle the Pokemon League.
I have a feeling that this game would very well run over into 2024, but I am not willing to put this game under the 2024 annual review since I am currently near to the end of the story. Moreover, I won't be able to play DLC because my country strangely does not support the e-shop.
Anyway, just like any other Pokemon game (to my knowledge because this is the first of such for me), you are an aspiring trainer ready to take your first big step into the world of Pokemon like Ash Ketchum, except in the Scarlet and Violet version, you got to attend the Pokemon Academy. But, of course, the whole purpose of a Pokemon game is to go out, explore, and catch Pokemon, which will be given to you after a few semesters in the Academy (time skip).
There are three quests for you to take (not optional). The first is the usual Pokemon League quest where you need to tackle the gyms located throughout Paldea. The second quest is helping Arven with his Mabosstiff by battling Titan Pokemon and acquiring some mystical herb. The third quest is to help Cassiopeia take down Team Star. All three are important quests to take on because they are located all over the Paldea region. If you are unsure of the order to go with, you can refer to this guide.
However, if you don't wish to tackle all at once, that my suggestion is to go for the Titan Pokemon quest first. The reason being is because after defeating each Titan Pokemon, your Koraidon, or Miraidon in Violet version, will acquire important skills beneficial to exploring Paldea. Afterwords, you can tackle both the Gym and Team Star together if you wish.
One thing I did to make my game experience smoother is to level up my Pokemon as high as I could. That's because I needed stronger Pokemon to battle the tougher Titan Pokemon. In order to do so, I went Tera Raiding, but that can also prove to get boring very easily.
(Picture Source: IGN thru' Google Image Search)
The big headache for this game is trying to find which Pokemon is best to keep and which is best to release. Of course, the usual strong Pokemon like Garchomp, Dragonite, Tyranitar and the like, are the top choices. But you will still need a wide selection of different types of Pokemon. The easiest way is to get hybrid types, such as Dragonite being a Dragon and Flying type.
Another way is to get the tera types. So, for example, you may encounter a Vaporeon (water type) with an electric tera version. However, the disadvantage of it is that in order to utilise the tera version, you will need to terastalize your Pokemon which has a long cool down between battles.
Overall, Pokemon Scarlet and Violet can be quite addicting, but it can also get boring soon. I'd say that it's a double-edge sword. Still, being my very first RPG Pokemon game, it is quite an experience to behold. I do look forward to other similar games like this.

A Cursed JPG
A Cursed JPG
I am a millenial of a particular age. One of the habits I have is that I am prone to trying to save things. I used to save IRC logs when I was a kid, and it took me a long time to get around to putting that habit behind me when I realised I was saving redundant logs that other computer programs were saving. Discord is a resource I search regularly, checking back on when I brought up other topics with my friends, that kind of thing.
I am circling around the way this story makes me selfconscious.
This is also why I’m not sharing any visual examples.
Anyway, so I grew up with a habit of saving files. These days I try not to bookmark everything but there was a time when my bookmark folder was immensely overfilled, and then a lot of services I got used to would ask me to add likes or saves or hearts to things so I could find them later, which I did not like. I actually really liked usenet for this reason because you could go to a newsgroup, download a giant pile of posts, and make your responses to them while offline, then upload them all at once. On one level, I was familiar with an internet where every file is eight letters then a dot then three letters.
I like email.
Anyway, uh, yeah, so anyway, watermarks are great! I like when images have watermarks on them so I can find where they came from. That’s great for archiving because then the thing I’m archiving has the source for them when I want to go back and find them anew. And so I save things and they go in my download directory and then I come back and work out where they go and ultimately, I eventually delete them. I mean there’s nothing in that folder that’s too old —
Well, today there’s nothing in the folder that’s old, for reasons we’ll get into.
Anyway, have you ever looked at how instagram looks under the hood? Streaming media really battered this desire to save local copies of things, where a youtube series is largely going to be ephemeral and I can’t play local copies, ever. That makes them a lot more like leaving the radio on while I work than necessarily something I habitually archive. I save links, I make sure I point people to the history I have with it when I find a channel, but I mean, we all bathe in a shower of content that’s basically constantly marinating our brains. Showers? Marinating? Beaugh, you know what I mean.
Point is that instagram is a source of a lot of interesting kinds of things I want to look at. Sometimes it’s maps, sometimes it’s high quality photographs of toys I don’t want to buy, sometimes it’s landscapes, sometimes it’s game asset art, sometimes it’s game layouts, all sorts of stuff. It is also, if you’re not aware, a website where people can post pictures of themselves, and network with people who want to see those pictures of themselves.
If you’ve ever looked at instagram, not the things the site presents, but the structure of the site’s code, you might be surprised how much of instagram is containers to put every other part of instagram in, which is, itself, mostly containers. Like you may look at any given page and go ‘well, there’s a picture here, buttons to go to the next picture here and here, and a comment section here,’ and think that means the site is broadly, three sections and you can bounce between them but no, the site is hundreds of subdivided sections into sections into sections into sections and they’re all being generated by the finest of computer touchers, and they’re not made for humans to look at. They’re made for a computer to look at, and that shows up in the files and variable names.
Did you know that Youtube tries to make sure the codes for any given video doesn’t form a word? Yeah, It’s made up of letters and numbers and they block a bunch of things that could be words. It’s a good practice, I get it, so you don’t get companies rerolling videos trying to make it so they get a really good tag for a thing, instead of just making each instance of a video name completely garbled. The filenames, the signifiers, aren’t used for people to handle. And that means they don’t have to be recognisable. Why should they be?
If you want to save a file off instagram, you open up the dev tools, pop open the div div div div div div tree all the way down to get to the image you’re looking for, pop that open into a new tab, then save that file. They’re usually watermarked so you can find them again, too, so it isn’t something I think about when I save the file. Bring it into the incoming directory, then sort them out later.
And this is how I found my cursed file.
I had an image in my incoming recently, where the file name was over 200 characters long. Do you know what this does to a windows 7 machine? Because somehow, my browser could create this file, somehow my explorer could find this file and open this file, but at that point the ability to interact with the file ends. I can’t edit it. I can’t save over it. I can’t rename it. I can copy the visual information from the image while it’s open and put it into another file, the image is totally standard visual information, but the file itself presented itself as being somehow wrong.
I wound up exploring some really weird avenues to get rid of this file. Delete. Ctrl-delete. Delete in a command prompt. Delete in a powershell. Delete everything in the directory, and see that left alone. Delete it in blocks. Delete it in a group.
Nope.
Nope, this file is wrong.
This file that you somehow made is refusing to be deleted. The eye of the operating system slides off it, when it’s required to interact with it in the wrong ways.
BE NOT AFRAID.
Anyway, what I wound up doing was clearing out the entire directory, making a copy of it, then with nothing in it but this one image, deleting that directory, then re-creating the directory and moving everything back into it, and praying the system didn’t react badly to it. That seems to have gotten rid of it.
This is a nothing story! It’s not remarkable beyond ‘I encountered a weird file,’ and I’m not used to being defied by windows explorer! But the way I wound up telling the story to Fox as I tried to work out what to do all kept circling around the picture and me being awkward and finding tangents.
‘cos the image, if you’re curious, was a picture of a pretty lady’s boobs.
Check it out on PRESS.exe to see it with images and links!

In 2006, the Ukrainian game developer Action Forms (Carnivores, Cryostasis) began developing a sequel to the Adventures of Captain Vrungel series as they had done previously with Treasure Island 1988, only this was to be a 3D adventure game rather than a 2D platformer/beat-em-up.
According to a couple different archived articles from the website 1C (which also has some screenshots), the plot would have featured a new regatta which the characters participate in that takes them to different locations, and interestingly, some of the locations listed such as Holland and Scandinavia were places which the characters visited in the book that were not adapted for the show, and so the game probably would have taken more inspiration from there as well. It was also said that at least some of the surviving voice actors would return as had been done for the Treasure Island game.
The game seems to have been cancelled anytime from 2009 to 2011, coinciding with the dormancy of Action Forms at that time, but since it was in development for a few years, it’s reasonable to assume some progress must have been made and something could be floating around out there, right?
There’s actually some video footage I found on this one channel here (game footage starts 1:57 seconds in), but unfortunately, the guy speaks over it, his link in the description seems to be dead, and I was unable to find the source of the game footage (which comes from gala.net), but I’m certain it belongs to a guy named Rostislav Garbar who says he worked prominently on the game on his LinkedIn page.
If this game had been completed, I sure hope it would have been more developed than the Treasure Island game, which was just a nice-looking tech demo. It’s a little strange seeing the Vrungel characters in 3D, but it’s not a bad conversion, and the animations look fairly fluid, I suppose. If I find more information, I’ll update this post.

Oooooh! Okay, okay! So, the Battle of Blair Mountain is a really good introductory topic to this type of thing. In fact, the channel Extra Credits made a fantastic teo-part video series on it!

It's not the only conflict of its kind, though, these were especially common. Barely over a year earlier, in May of 1920, was the Matewan Massacre. This was only one of a series of conflicts called the West Virginia Coal Wars, or simply put, the Mine Wars. These spanned from 1912 to 1923, starting with conflicts in Paint and Cabin Creek before more started popping up further and further across West Virginia's sector of the Appalachias - wouldn't be surprised if some folk outside of the state got particularly inspired.
And guess who was involved? Not the Pinkertons, no sir-ee. Instead it was a COMPLETELY different agency called the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency! This group started in the early 1890s as the Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, its founder William Baldwin being *ahem* "affectionately" known as the Pinkerton of the South, despite only working for a solo detective prior. The company was initially contracted by the Norfolk and Western Railroad, before being contracted by other companies. To give you a picture of what Baldwin-Felts was like, they were not only infamous for conducting anti-union activities, but also were VERY into enforcing Jim-Crow laws - check the embedded link for more information
During the fight, only two civies (some sources say four, I'll be fully honest, you should probably look into this too) had been killed, with seven Baldwin-Felts guards spilling their red. And one of the people, Sid Hatfield (who came to the area to help organize a union) was hailed as a savior, yet was killed barely a year later when he was heading for a court date over the incident. You wanna take a gander at who could've possibly done that, to prevent him from testifying against the railroad? RING-A-DING DING, BALDWIN-FELTS GUARDS, BABY!
Again, I highly recommend you research these yourself. Another good thing to research would be the National Farmer's Alliance, which was a political party formed by farmers and other folk from the South, having gone from the 1880s to the mid/late 1890s! They're a fundamental group if you want to learn about socialist political parties (no no no, please stay with me here, it's genuinely interesting information), and how common folk have always come together during desperate times to make try and make good for themselves and others!
And the earliest known conflict against workers occurred during the 1892 Homestead Steel Strike! If you'd recognize a certain name, now would be the time to mention that those goddamn Pinkertons were involved.
Make sure to check the links, Please. There's going to be information I missed, especially with how late it is, and that'll help you double-check what I say, if not let you learn more on this topic. But, read on up, partner!
it is absolutely BONKERS to me, the number of people in the united states i have talked to who have never even heard of the battle of blair mountain. how the largest labor uprising in our history manages to skirt by so many leftists unknown is just downright astonishing. the largest labor uprising, and the largest armed uprising, period, since the civil war.
