i do think one of the things i really enjoy about nu!who is that so many of the doctor's relationships are either established to be -- or retroactively written as in the case of some classic!who returning characters -- Super Intense in a way that cannot be quite nailed down. that ambiguity is key to my enjoyment
some of this is because of nu!who playing alloromantic-chicken -- that is, they kinda wanna do something sexy and romantic, which they see as functionally the same thing, but they veer off to the left at the last second every time (which, fascinating to analyse on its own) -- but that just means that these relationships take on a fascinating tinge of not romantic not platonic but a secret (queer) third thing that is heightened because of the science fiction Element of it all (the doctor is an immortal alien who travels around time and space, functionally forever until the show decides otherwise, while everyone else must eventually leave the show for some reason... except for the master, of course, who has themself defined their relationship as basically a secret third thing in canon... in fucking m*ffat's canon no-less), but it is still grounded in incredibly real human identity concepts and relationship constructs... but... not necessarily on purpose a lot of the time? (donna is on purpose, but would they ever describe it as an aroace qpp... maybe one day, I've just gotta get a one-on-one with rtd or david tennant, they'd get it, I know they would!) (my parasocial relationship with these two consists of me explaining aroace queer philosophy to them and both of them nodding and instantly understanding and telling me how smart I am)
this to say that anyone who does enjoy the alloromantic read of things, can obviously have at it, that's their enjoyment and the show doesn't not say that's a possible read, but it's always interesting to me when the people who don't enjoy it can't read (queerly) outside of their amatonormative box to know/understand that there are a million and one ways that these relationships can be described. there's just... no curiosity there in delving into the actual dynamics, because once something has a will-they-won't-they romantic undertone, any interesting analysis of the actual Bones of what's going on just seems to fly out of the window. it's been cursed by amatonormativity. it is nothing other than Romantic. the end
there's something about the way that amatonormativity actively makes interacting with this show worse (it's the inherent aroaceness of the main character and people not engaging with that read because they either don't know aroaceness exists or they don't think it's a real thing or they don't think it's "actually" queer, and so instead the show is hetero-ized, to the point that people might be shocked that the doctor could call a man hot, because nothing else that could be read as queer -- never mind the onscreen gay shit that's happened already -- is happening in this show, that's... that's what it is). it limits the kind of spaces it can go into and it limits the ability to enjoy the intensity of these relationships for what they are in the text, by simply reading what you don't want into it and then making up a guy to get mad at (the exception may be river song's arc, but even that -- in its own, flawed "river song consistently reads as having no self-esteem when it comes to the doctor and was also groomed from birth to be obsessed with them" kind of way -- goes beyond strictly normative alloromantic allosexual reads)
but this show -- specifically nu!who, because classic!who never allowed that kind of ambiguity in the same way from what I've seen so far/have read, the word "Asexual" meant something different on that show (celibacy, monkhood, the learned scholar, etc) -- has (unintentionally?) offered a smorgasbord of intense, well-written, aromantic and asexual relationship dynamics, all centred around one single character, and people don't see it as an option, because they don't quite... get it... as concept... as a real, human concept, not just a science fiction conceit
anyway, the arguably most easily definable relationships the doctor has are with all the characters one might describe from the doctor's perspective as "proteges/students/ersatz children/grandchild," and that's not to say those relationships are not super intense, it's just a slightly easier dynamic to pinpoint and explain (although i think if, for example, bill had met thirteen that dynamic might have become very muddied very quickly......)
#doctor who#dw#doctor who meta#aspec doctor#aroace doctor#the doctor#not to say twelve wasn't a butch lesbian ofc#but i think bill's type skews younger#long post

Funny how this post was also trying to be inclusive of other religions, but people are specifically getting mad about Christianity and missing the point. But, since I have been pushed, I have something to say to you.
Many people who partake in the Abrahamic religions do NOT follow the texts strictly. If you pressed religious people, I can guarantee there's many who would not defend slavery, genocide, sexism or any other number of horrible things carried out in their texts. The idea that queerphobes are following the religion "the right way" and that queers are inherently not is flawed. Religion changes even when it feels like it doesn't. Religion is a social construct. You should know this if you're an atheist.
People who use religion to justify queerphobia are BIGOTED, just like how those who used the "science" of eugenics were bigoted! And if people can volunteer to collectively drop racism or sexism as things that are sacred and justified, then they can do the same for queerphobia. Queer people DO belong in religious communities, and we DON'T have to let bigots claim divinity. It is NOT divine to hurt people, I REFUSE to believe that my symbol of love would sanction the abuse of innocent people, and I will NOT let bigoted people sully divinity by implying their wretched actions are what higher powers approve of.
I understand how religion has hurt people, but it has not hurt everyone, and hurt people can decide to reclaim their religion from bigots if they want to. You are allowed to be hurt, you're allowed to be averse to religion, but you hurt members of your OWN community when you then claim that religion and queerness don't belong together. That was the point of this post.
Also, a part of it was to try and shake some of you out of your extremely white perspective because more religions than just Christianity exists!! I dedicated a whole paragraph to shouting out other religions!!! This is why Indigenous peoples and other POC can't stand our asses, because you don't acknowledge that they exist and that they have religions that are OLDER than Christianity. Christianity is not the center of the world!! Your church was not the center of the world! Please think about what you're saying before you say it.
Whenever I see a queer invalidate another queer's relationship with god, I just get disappointed. "We need more complex queers!" You can't even handle religious queer people.
#📚 my posts#📌 thoughts#you can so easily look through the notes and read people's experiences first hand#people are happy i made this post. people are talking abt their alienation from their communities.#like please i dont want to be made into the big religious queer spokesperson you can just choose to interpret the post kindly

The Catboy Valois AU
This one is a little cursed, and inspired by this Totally Spies post.
This AU does contain some nsfw content, which I will place at the end of the post and mark for (it’s right after the dog pics). Once again, this was brainstormed on the GG server, back in October of 2019. Biggest contributor other than myself was @atagotiak.
So I decided that, at some point, I need to see one of those inexplicable and very horny modern catpeople AUs.
Where a fraction of the population just happens to have cat ears and tails etc. for... minimal reason.
Tarvek def has them. Bc twink. Sticking to the tropes, you know.
All the Valois are catpeople because most of history didn't have the option of interbreeding, just coexisting. Something something sterile hybrids because chromosomes.
Andronicus Valois, Catboy King
Lucrezia was full human and Aaronev never had a chance.
"Most of history" because recently they scienced up ways to get around it, so there are catperson/human hybrids, like Gil and Zeetha (Klaus is human, Zanta is not).
Klaus is kinda glad Gil has cat ears bc this makes people automatically assume he can’t be the dad even if they realize it’s technically possible.
This means Agatha gets her boys.
The human (Lars), the hybrid (Gil), and the cat (Tarvek).
Anevka's initial robot body doesn't have the cat features just due to the fact that Tarvek was aiming for Bare Minimum, and then when he added them in later she decided she liked being able to pick when she had them.
I am morally obligated to reblog the callout art @mercurialvoid did for me a few years ago.
We’re not gonna talk about that, though.
human Othar/catgirl Anevka
SCENT MARKING
It's considered Undignified but everyone still DOES it, just... discreetly.
Agatha thinks nothing of it when Zeetha rubs their cheeks together while training and then someone looks at her funny and asks if that's her girlfriend or something.
And Agatha Realizes that she's currently got Belongs-to-Zeetha scent on her and has to scramble to explain that Zeetha kind of adopted her as a little sister because it's the closest approximation she can come up with that still has Acceptable Connotations.
I think platonic marking is a THING but mostly within families, children, and really close female friends, like holding hands. (Toxic masculinity does apply.)
And kolee-zumil is effectively family relationship.
Agatha can't SMELL the scent markings but she gets used to them.
Also like. There's probably different levels of scent marking depending on the body part. Wrists and cheeks are different.
Jagers that used to be catboys have better senses of smell, and are the ones sent to find a Heterodyne.
Agatha and Lars make out but don't go all the way because Agatha is not ready. (Meanwhile, Zeetha can literally smell how horny these dumb kids are.)
TINY BABY GILVEK FACE NUZZLES WHILE STILL ON CW:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/93043972a8e876dd5a83cc7c7369adbc/e2cf66abbc489bb1-15/s400x600/f0f732d887f722f8d19335cd1b7b94147542e81a.jpg)
(Imagine how much more dangerous the baby gilvek airship-exploring shenanigans would be given one is a catboy and the other is half catboy.)
Gil just kinda scent marks on literally everything/everyone. The boy is affection-starved well into adulthood. He probably purrs too. And purring is probably considered kinda undignified.
Tarvek purrs when he’s designing clothes in his head. He’s embarrassed when he realizes. Everyone thinks it’s cute tho.
Also when crafting super-complicated diabolical plans.
Purring isn’t very diabolical. So it’s embarrassing and doesn’t fit with the aesthetic at all.
It’s hard to do an evil scheme while being an image-conscious catboy.
Gil only. Sort of knows how to cat. He's not very good at it. Zulenna helped but...
Is Von Pinn a cat? Gut says yes. Though it makes it less likely she'd be mistaken for Lu as the students did, but hey! She’d appreciate that.
She probably wouldn’t know how to cat.
Or maybe she would, given we’re assuming hereditary and she was made for Andronicus... She probably knows a bit abt how to tell other people how to cat, but she doesn’t know how to cat herself.
The Muses... not designed to look like catpeople. Ruined the minimalist bodies RVR was going for, going by canon's lack of consistent ears or noses
Agatha does not realize at first that Von-Pinn is a cat-lady because her ears match her hair and every time she sees Agatha her ears go back, and the tail is hidden under the hobble dress.
Otilia is very happy to go from catwoman body to Giant Metal Cat body
KITTY BANGLADESH DUPREE
She's got a faint pattern to her fur that's, on closer inspection, very much indicating she's a PANTHER.
Consider: Tarvek starts working himself up into a frenzied panic and the nearest Trusted Person starts petting him to calm him down and he like. Melts.
TBH tho, a good portion of canon Tarvek’s behaviour can already be described as “cat does something stupid and immediately after attempts to pretend he has dignity even though everyone saw the stupid thing.”
Once Tarvek calms down... Lazy Cat Time.
OH
NECK PINCH
CH would be ecstatic that Agatha snagged two suitors, then swing around to devastated that they’re both catboys, and maybe delusional enough to attempt to cut the ears/tails off like that’d solve anything then come around to “well there’s always science” once it’s fixed.
All Valois have high necks on their outfits, at least at the back
So nobody tries to Deactivate The Cat
(One less thing for Anevka to worry about.)
Because, you know. Canon decided to cut Agatha in half to acquire an heir, so we can’t exactly say the Castle is all that sensible.
It does calm down once Agatha mentions she has Lars, though.
Per @lyratalus: Krosp could be... so much more dangerous in this AU. What if he was designed to be emperor of all catpeople?
Cats never do what they're told anyways, and you can’t really control people without wasps, but the attempt was made! Vapnoople was ambitious!
Long story short, there's a spark of Something but then they just bat him off the table.
Imagine Seffie making Martellus Stop by deactivating the cat
Violetta is the cutest lil catgirl...
SHE GETS REALLY BRISTLEY WHEN SHE'S MAD
HE'S NOT A TWINK AND IT'S WEIRD. Not even a twunk???
Martellus is
So fucking ODD for a catboy
Like it HAPPENS but it means that human women are more likely to find him attractive than catgirls (and even that's a bit of a long shot on the basis of personality).
(Gil excused from the catboys-are-twink-to-twunk rule on the basis of being half human, and his dad being Basically A Wall.)
That said, for Andy I’m gonna go with "buff as fuck but sooooooo charismatic that all the catgirls, and human girls, flocked to him anyway."
So that’s at least two Bara catboys in this AU
Tarvek is canonically more or less the same size/shape as Gil, but... in my heart, Tarvek’s a twunk. He’s got muscle but he's not AS big, and he's got intense Twink energy, especially since Tarvek actually is queer.
(And they're both straight so they're not even technically bara, just Buff.)
(Not twinks either but...)
(Twink is a fun word.)
Colette is human and Seffie isn't but they'd need science for babies ANYWAY so who cares? It's a lot of Seffie laying her head in Colette's lap and purring as she falls asleep because Colette just keeps petting her.
Catboy Martellus still makes sparkhound shapeshifters. He's a catperson... but he's still a Dog Person.
Martellus and his dynamic with the sparkhounds:
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/fc1c1b50e53ec9e1e9c496edeb330390/e2cf66abbc489bb1-ad/s540x810/09a1eaedff5c04d6dd73f406479970d03acd5922.jpg)
He loves them, they love him. But they’re embarrassing sometimes.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/4c40681b43b419cb89465585b580dd7f/e2cf66abbc489bb1-d5/s400x600/b64f912b7d1196db39984e018b325767a7b16e28.jpg)
THIS MARKS THE BEGINNING OF THE NSFW CONTENT
ANYWAY back to the point, which is that a lot of these catperson AUs are just... really super horny.
Which is valid.
Ears are technically erogenous zones for everyone but for the cat people... it's a Lot. It's also not like. Inherently sexual? But it can be. Like spooning. It feels nice ALWAYS but with the right person it's also HORNY. Or like brushing someone else's hair.
Ear rubs and headpats that result in like, intense sensation? Good actually.
Also I’m declaring that catpeople have heats. Or at least like. Heightened mating seasons? Extra horny times.
So you have Agatha and Lars normal, Gil kinda horny and confused, and Tarvek rubbing himself against the nearest spouse in hopes that someone's going to fuck the living daylights out of him.
Valois probably take suppressing things as a matter of course bc it’s hard to stay alert to assassination attempts when overwhelmingly horny. When Tarvek deliberately forgoes them eventually, everyone is touched by how much trust it shows.
Without suppressants, the horny is either something you can cope with or something that is intense but comes in Very brief periods. Either one day a month, or a week twice a year? Something like that.
Honestly though, imagine if Gil tried to hide being a catperson for the sake of the Empire or some nonsense, and had to just suffer when in heat?
Agatha likes to watch the boys go at it because there's something about Fangs On Neck that's super pleasurable for cat people and she can't provide that for Tarvek but Gil certainly can.
Bonding marks aren't a thing but possessive biting is.
(Since birth control is so easily accessed in GG, I feel like Lu’s opinion of catboys would be a super gross objectifying thing.)
(Which. Yeah.)
(Lucrezia basically has that opinion on any man in canon that isn’t immediately useful to her for science reasons.)

So starting this off as: I am a klance shipper hardcore. I’m queer, I want queer rep in my favorite show, simple as that. Was I disappointed we didn’t get klance content in this season?
Not at all.
Because look: this season gave us SO MUCH MORE than just that, right? There was so much happening so fast I didn’t have time to whine about my boys not being together. I’m focused all on the incredible season I just watched.
The character development? I was really happy with it! I know this fandom is notorious for saying there’s none, but that’s one of the things I think the show does really remarkably well, and I was really happy with it. Even my favorite Paladin, Hunk, got some well deserved development right off the bat! Getting to see him engineer rather than just being food boy was refreshing and appreciated. Plus, all his interactions with Pidge where they discuss science?? I love it! The show is really making an effort to show this guy is at her caliber, or at least can nearly match it (I mean, Pidge is the smartest on the team).
But other than Hunk? We saw Lance grow in a really surprising but great way. He’s more open and honest about his feelings and, even though he started off flirting shamelessly in the beginning of the season, he grew even more. We’ve seen his deep respect for the people he loves, and I think he now can truly convey that to Allura. Yeah, I think he had a little two-steps-back moment at the beginning when he was being all season one again, but hey, maybe he’s been like this behind the scenes and we haven’t gotten to see it because it hasn’t been pertinent.
I can’t even begin on Keith. Wake me up from the coma that boy put me in. Embracing his heritage, learning about his mother and father, becoming the true Black Paladin and unlocking the Black Bayard and wings? Good gravy I was ready to piss myself.
Allura? My bitch queen went OFFFFF. Y’all, I cannot say how much I love her even more. Lotor scorned her and she DEMOLISHED HIM in the best way possible. And fuck, she is so powerful now. Being able to rip into the quintessence realm and power Voltron like that high key made me cry. When she connected with all of Voltron like that, it just accentuated her place as the heart of Voltron. And reviving a human by transferring his soul? Oh my god yes.
Speaking of: Lotor. This fucker. I actually really liked where his character was taken. Yes, I would have appreciated him being more morally gray as we don’t have enough of that right now, but still. The way I see it is this: yeah, he’s technically 50/50 Altean/Galran, but even his own mother says she wasn’t there. He was raised 100% Galra with their values whether with his father or being whipped into learning by his nanny. When he was exposed in Oriande we saw him revert to his core belief of vrepit sa. He may want to embrace his Altean heritage, but he simply never had the means. The nature/nurture aspects of this show are handled very well (Keith being a great example) and I think this is just another case. Altea is there, but Galra nurture was more powerful. His ultimate demise was because he was too desperate to prove himself as something much greater than everyone believed him to be. He craved power and the quintessence exploited it. It was honestly the best way for him to go: so Power hungry that it killed him off.
And lastly, Shiro. Wow. First of all, we all fucking called clone Shiro, but I wasn’t expecting that many. Are the bodies unstable? Was Haggar under the impression he would die again? His return was incredible nonetheless. I liked how the show covered up the 84 discrepancy of “Shiro died this is is twin(?) to come take his place” while also high key referencing that fuckin mistake in the DnD ep. I’m a huge Shiro fan, but I really like that he died. It shows how deep of a connection he had with the Black Lion while dealing with the sheer trauma of the battle that, for all intents and purposes, should have killed him anyway.
As for Pidge? She got a shit ton of character development before. I love her, and I can’t wait for more, but I’m glad they focused elsewhere (Hunk!) for now. I really can’t say how much I do love her character (I see myself in her and my brother in Matt) but yeah.
Other great things (I know I should wrap this up): the animation! Holy shit, Studio Mir. The final battle in the quintessence realm had me S H O O K. The expressions were fantastic, the design beautiful. They’ve wowed me before with atla, and are doing it again with vld.
Also the detailing of Galra culture! It was fascinating to learn about what is truly an inherently violent species and the meaning behind Vrepit Sa.
ROMELLE. The whole Altean arc, really. It makes so much sense! Of course it wasn’t like all of them were on the planet when the mass destruction happened. I mean, they proved themselves beyond intergalactic travel before so it would only make sense. But just. ROMELLE. Modeled after 84 Allura as a beautiful homage and named after her cousin (sister? Niece?? Relative). High key looked like Princess Zelda but shit I was down.
Final words: this season was a masterpiece. No, there wasn’t much klance shipping fodder but I’m not honestly too mad (yet. Wait a month and I’ll be wishing my boys had their time). Personally, I don’t watch the show for just that! I get my queer shows elsewhere—I watch voltron for the quality content and animation. Would I kill for some queer content in it though? Fuck yes. Focus on the other great parts first!!
tl;dr: klance isn’t canon king (yet) but I’m not mad (yet). Character development saved the show and so did everything else.

Low magic, gender, ceremagi, a big clusterfuck pie...
So this is something that has been gnawing away at me for damn near the entirety of the time I've been firmly planted in my practice, but especially since the whole this-is-douchecanoe thing went down (they're not worth my tag).
A few days ago I reblogged this post, which talks about how this-isn't-sparta is clearly coming from an occultist background, and seems to be embodying all of the sexist, ableist, elitist, and dogmatic crap that we've come to know and love from a particular and unfortunately vocal segment of that community.
But then this happened.
These practices within themselves are very male-centric. They seem more left brain than right. More confrontational than accepting.
Wait, what?
Now, I am not trying to call anyone out at all here. I ain't mad. I just wanna unpack this a little bit and actually look at it. 'K? I’m only using this because it's a convenient and ready-to-hand example, but the mindset is absolutely everywhere in the magical world.
Why do we as a community view low magic as being an inherently a "feminine" and "illogical" branch of magic? Why do we view it as something that is yielding and disorganized and void of the sort of study that can go into ceremonial magic? Even the people who practice it seem to accept this stereotype, even as they're surrounded by books and attempting some extremely punishing hedge work for the 34928057498th time.
I actually don't know. Because none of that is remotely true, in my experience of practicing primarily low magic.
Also note: I continue to refer to it as "low" for the same reason I continue to self-identify as "witch." In both cases, it's a practice usually associated with the underclass, which is an important part of the history of these practices. And I don't want to erase that. It keeps me humble. Anyway...
Let's talk about low magic. Folk magic. Po' people magic. Community magic.
Obviously there are thousands of different varieties of low magic -- several just for every culture in any given era. But they share a few broad things in common.
Firstly, they have an absolutely vast knowledge base. In order to effectively work most historical or true traditional forms of low magic, you need to have a working knowledge of botany, geology, history, cooking, distillation, the food web, migrational patterns, astronomy...
Learning how to perform the full body of work of most low magical traditions literally requires a full interdisciplinary education, fam. They involve a shit-ton of left-brain thinking, knowledge acquisition, and logical work. I have learned more about science from my practice than I did from my formal education, ok?
Even if you try to whatabout modern, novel forms of low magic, it still stays true. A tech witch, for example, might require a damn near photographic knowledge of the grid of their city and a couple of different coding languages, in addition to several of the disciplines above.
Let's keep something in mind, here. Low craft is the mother of modern medicine. The magician and the healer were the same person throughout most of history, and if you look back on what few ancient low magic books exist, you will find medicinal concepts that we still use to this day.
Low craft is, and has always been, a deeply research- and knowledge-based way of working. It couldn't possibly have given birth to something as expansive and world-changing as medicine if it weren't.
What is different about low magic compared to ceremonial, and I think where this concept of it being "less disciplined" comes from, is that low magic is performatively flexible. Because it is a craft developed and used by people with unpredictable access to materials, time, or places, it is meant to be adapted to a non-ideal situation pretty much on the fly. That is exactly why it has such a vast body of knowledge behind it: because the more you know, the more ready you are to do the work you need no matter what situation you might find yourself in.
Ceremonial magic is, well, what it says on the box: ceremonial. And because the experience of watching a ceremonial working seems much more procedural than watching a low magic working, people have somehow concluded the low magic involves less knowledge. That is not remotely true. The knowledge just comes in at a different point in the process, i.e. how they even got to the point of doing a working at all, when they had nothing but a spoon, two pennies, and a waxing moon at their disposal.
Hell, low magicians even adapt ceremonial magic. Hoodoo workers know all about the Seals of Solomon, and they make them work beautifully even without the usual prescribed ceremony.
Now let's talk a little bit about these... gender ideas. This is a whole complicated ball of icky, slippery worms.
There's two concepts going on here:
That ceremonial magic is "male."
That "male-ness" is confrontational and intolerant.
Ok. *rubs temples*
It is undeniable that ceremonial magic is dominated by men, and it always has been.
But that does not mean that low magic is "a woman's practice." That is not even remotely true, and it never has been.
Low magic has historically been communal. In many places, it still is even now. Practitioners have always been both male and female. Sometimes they held different titles, sometimes they didn't. Usually, deference was simply determined by age and length of time practicing, not gender or anything else.
As a matter of fact, magical practice was one of the few places where we continued to see relative gender equality even after patriarchy began to take over many societies in the world. Magic continued to be a practice of merit and communal assistance, not something where your gender decided your competence or your station in the magical community.
From Britain's cunning folk to black root doctors, both African and diasporic, both men and women have always been magic workers in low practice, and there is little to no evidence of them disrespecting each other, or assuming one's magic is inferior to the other's because of their gender alone. There is no black man who ever wanted to cross a root working woman, I guarantee you!
Ok. So now let's tackle this "male-ness is confrontational and intolerant" thing.
No. Toxic masculinity is confrontational and intolerant.
So then why do we see that particular problem more often in ceremonial magic, which has always been a male-dominated practice?
Because ceremonial magic is not just male-dominated. More specifically, it is dominated by white, Western, higher-class men, who are also usually straight and virtually always cisgender. Let's just get that right, here.
This isn't a problem with "male-ness." It is a problem with the people at the very top of the kyriarchal totem pole, and it's the same problem we always see with this group of people, whether we're talking about Congress or gentrification. It's no different.
Ceremonial magic has historically been the property of powerful, wealthy men who were part of the ruling class. From popes to aristocrats, the development of ceremonial magic has grown directly from that power system.
"Male-ness" does not dictate one's personality. "Male-ness" does not inherently make one intolerant of other people. Unexamined, unchecked privilege is what does that. "Male-ness" means nothing other than the state of occupying a male-identified gender and/or body.
The strong and persistent community of men that has always been present in low magic alongside their female counterparts is no less male. And we shouldn't degrade the potential and decency of men who work at these things by assigning them a personality without even examining it for truth first.
We also really need to stop defining everything feminine as yielding, weak, or illogical -- the implicit opposite of the strong, dominating, and procedural "male" practice. It doesn't lift up women to define their work and their encyclopedic knowledge as being somehow lesser or weaker like that.
I know that, most of the time, people don't mean it like this because it's just beaten into our heads to think of female-ness this way, to the point where all of us will, at some point, just parrot it back without even thinking about it (me included), but it's a back-handed defense at best. We need to acknowledge the power, knowledge, and work of the magic women do. We need to get better at examining those assumptions within ourselves that their work isn't as good.
Just as a general concept, we need to stop trying to shoe-horn the gender binary and its tired stereotypes into the way we see ourselves as magic workers, and the way we see our magic. That’s as true in low magic as in ceremonial.
And finally...
I can pretty much hear all the ceremonial magicians who are mad as fuck at me right now and ready to bang away at their keyboards about how they're female or disabled or queer or whatever.
Ok, stop for a second.
I know.
'K?
I know that. I know there are lots of you coming from less privileged backgrounds, struggling for the spoons to do your work, etc.
And I really hope you're going to use that to take back ceremonial magic from that ugly history, and turn it into something that's for everyone and works equally for the magical empowerment of all people.
You can totally do that, now that we have this here thing called the internet. And I follow several people who partake in problematic practices with the specific intent of re-envisioning them as something better. Great. Wonderful. Please do that.
But in order to do that, you have to recognize the roots of where it came from. You can't tackle these problems by pretending they don't exist, just like you can't be an ally to black people without acknowledging the problems of whiteness.
It's not personal. It's a fact of both the historical and present-day climate of that community.
We need to acknowledge that people like this-are-donut are pretty common in that community. And in order to make it a better space for you, it's to your benefit to fight back against that degradation of other people just as much as we do in the low magic community. I mean, let's be real, those people don't respect you any more than they respect me. What do you gain out of defending them? Nothing. If you won't do it for any other reason, do it for you.
To those of you already cleaning house, thank you.
To those of you who are gonna say my community has problems too, yes, I know. Name me one time ever that I've denied that or not come out against it whenever I see it, from racist crafters to Nazis in paganism. So please just... don't. Today we're talking about ceremagi's laundry. I talk about mine plenty, ok?
So anyway.
TL;DR If you're a low magician of any sort, your knowledge is just as deep and hard-won as that of any ceremonial magician. Stop accepting the premise at face value that it is somehow a lesser practice.
We also need to stop associating low magic as being "for women." Low magic has a rich history of gender inclusion, and in some societies even LGBT inclusion. Men have shown themselves perfectly capable of working peaceably with us. There is no reason they can't in ceremonial magic just as they have in low magic.
In the spirit of the holiday, let's try to keep this productive. I've really tried my best, here.
Happy Ostara for my pagans buds, and Happy Easter for my Christian witches. Have a good'un.

1. Yeah? We're not close, I'm a bit better now with my mom but generally pretty distant with both parents.
2. Either my cat or my mom but like lovingly to my cat and sarcastically to my mom
3. Do I regret everything? No. Do I regret at least one thing a day? Usually, yeah. It's usually when I want to be more productive.
4. Yeah but I'm working on it. Positive self talk, y'know. I don't have to be a professional artist to doodle some cute plants and have fun with it. I'm most insecure about being in positions of power and potentially hurting someone.
5. Single and not looking to mingle unless y'all just wanna be friends cuz I'd really like to have more friends but I'ma feel hella awkward at first.
6. Peacefully? Or quickly? Either like when I'm old in my sleep, somewhere comfy, or if that's not possible then like, in an accident that kills me on impact. I don't like pain and I don't want the fear leading up to it.
7. Apple, chips + cream cheese, my dad's pizza
8. Nah I always believed I was inherently bad at sports and now I know that it was just because I haven't played enough sports so I didn't have the socialization or the training in coordination and I didn't know how to exercise regularly (and safely) but I like exercising alone now
9. I used to but now it's only if I get really annoyed at how long they are and forget to trim them when there's nail clippers available
10. Never?
11. Idk I always get little things like "oh it'd be nice to kiss this person" but I'm very much big on long term relationships and commitment and there's no one in my life rn that's up for that kind of relationship
12. Yea but only for essays
13. Mostly some ex's (1 or 2 of mine and a great many friends) but also like ANY rapist is the scum of the earth IMO
14. I miss my friends
15. Seven! Three dogs and four cats. They're all adoptees or rescues except for our oldest dog, Max, is from a breeder. The other six have been from the animal control office, the shelter, the litter of kittens at my mom's work, and the litter kittens in our backyard (we still feed their mom bc she has a broken leg and can't hunt so she generally lives in the area from our backyard to our front porch)
16. Bored and nervous about school starting tomorrow.
17. Only at my house
18. Yea
19. Only if I could safely change some political shit
20. My ex's old house
21. I'm bringing a friend over to make foooood cuz she don't have a kitchen at the dorms
22. No biological kids, ever. I've thought about adopting kids but I would really prefer to take in older / queer kids so we can skip the whole shitty raising baby business and jump into helping someone recover from trauma and learn that the world is better
23. No piercings, don't like the idea of rhem
24. Social studies was my best subject as a child but I only ever cared about science. Last semester, my best grades were in my physics and biochemistry classes, but immunology was my favorite class it's just really hard.
25. Yea most of the time I miss a person or pet
26. Hugggggs
27. There was these two assholes I dated in junior year of highschool that I dumped, one of the relationships was 4 days and the guy acted fucking pathetic like he had built an entire future in his head with us, idk how the other guy from a several month relationship lasted
28. Yea
29. Yea
30. I haven't exercised properly in weeks and I'm salty
31. Yea
32. Green? I used to say purple or blue because calm colors always seemed more appealing but now I just want plants. Yellow is good too. It's really easy to make yellow and green look really annoying but they also have the potential to be very satisfying colors (I mean they all do but like imo there's no way to have an ugly blue but like poop green is definitely a thing)
33. Yea
34. I think it was a nightmare that I didn't remember when I woke up
35. My therapist? Maybe?
36. Yea
37. This depends heavily on whether it's something I care about (like other people) (in which case I will be eternally mad) or if I've been slighted (cuz I have a massive lack of confidence) then I'll be more likely to forgive... Gonna have to work on that
38. I have no idea lol, its probably going to depend a lot on how moving cities goes this summer? Last year had some ups but a lot of downs so it's probably going to be up from the previous year but my best times have been really young childhood and maybe my senior year of highschool and freshman year of college when I didn't give a shit and I was exploring a lot
39. I was 14 and it was horrible
40. Nah
Now I'm assuming it's a typo but the numbers skip up by ten here
51. Chicken rice and gravy
52. Nah I'm a believer in the random entropy and enthalpy of the universe but y'know like respect in case there's higher order beings out there
53. Read a book to help anxiety
54. Idk like I've done shitty things and the people I've been with have done shitty things and idk if it was cheating or not but let's just say I cheated for the sake of simplifying an argument. Does that make me a shitty person? I don't think so. I hope not. Is it fair to me or my partner to stay in that relationship after the cheating, regardless of circumstance? Nah but only bc it's shitty and disrespectful to oneself. Now, taking circumstance into consideration, plenty of people still don't want to leave after the incident and I don't think there's anything wrong with that but it really demolishes trust so :////
55. I try not to be mean but sometimes I'm really passive aggressive. I've hurt people and I'm really scared of continuing to hurt people and I know it will continue to happen but it freaks me tf out
56. Literally no one
57. Eh? It's really nice? Like when I like someone I might say I believe in true love but I don't think it's realistic. Love has to be a conscious and continuous choice from both parties.
58. Soft warm rain / sunny but with that lil breeze
59. I like the death of the bugs which results from the snow but I don't dealing with the snow
60. Absolutely! I mean it's terrifying rn bc I thought I was in a stable relationship but I wasn't and now like how am I ever gonna know how to judge that shit
61. Yessss i am bby
62. Nature and friends and stability and routine
63. Yea I have the name papers printed I'm just really really nervous about going to do it
64. Yea
65. Probably date them (same sex is ok too tho)
66. Idk how many friends im completely open with at all but yeah all of the people who are contenders are women or enby
67. My sister
68. My friend Carter!
69. Nah soulmates are good for fics but not for real life ^ see above at 52 for the section true love which is equally applicable here
70. Yea probably all my friends and family qualify for this
70 horrible questions ... Fuck it

Just finished the second Night Vale novel It Devours! that I got my hands on when I got a hold of my pre-order yesterday. (So sue me. College strike up here gave me some free time)
So some thoughts?
BIIIIG SPOILERS obviously.
Firstly I’d just like to say that I LOVE the ending. Specifically I love the way the relationship between Nilanjana and Darryl ends. GOD that was so refreshing! Honestly their relationship felt rushed and empty anyway and it was SO fucking nice to see a realistic potential end to a new adult relationship.
In regards to the early parts of the relationship? The writing seemed to have a preoccupation with kisses and lips that squicked me more then anything, but I’ve never been a big kissing person in general so maybe it’s just that.
The sex mentioned, especially with how explicitly they did so, kind of felt... I’m just going to say it, a little annoying? *sigh* Now I get that there aren’t too many places where even this minor level of detail and frankness about sex could come up, but seeing what felt like the first slightly more explicit handling of it then like, Carlos jokingly getting turned on by science or some such as the podcast has done (Not counting the semi-obscure and one time live show they recently did of course. Night Vale after dark I THINK it might have been called? With Cecil and Dylan reading some nsfw content?) what felt like the first more explicit handling went to... well a hetero sex scene and, eh, call me a bitter queer but like, ANY thing else would have felt more interesting. Idk, I was just rather meh about the whole thing.
Oh and well I’m at it, “Sex in Night Vale take’s a little longer, but when it starts it happens much like anywhere else.” also felt kind off to me. Just picky queer sex positive feminist things I guess. It ain’t a big thing, but if anyone else had written it I’d be rolling my eyes going “yo there’s more then one way to fuck my hetero dude friend. It’s not all about cis ass, able bodied penis in vaginal sex.) but again, that’s just me being picky as SHIT because I, to be frank, expect a heckuva lot from Night Vale what with them consistently delivering for 3 year (Specifically how long I’ve been listening I mean. Don’t recall how many year’s they’ve been around in general.)
Also like, the lead up TO the sex was weird? We had a window into both their heads but at no point were we lead to believe they were physically particularly attracted to each other before the sex? It jumped from “maybe he’s kind of cute” to fucking? Like give us a few bits of her (preferably her because fuck yes not shying away from female sexuality) eyes getting caught on his body or some overt desire or something. Direct us to something that says “physical” attraction. (and let’s REALLY not have it be a possessive stereotype about her getting jealous over some female friend of his and taking it out by getting touchy feely with a guy she barely knows for that matter) It just felt really flat. Really lacking it what should have been easy build up. Minor build up, because sex can absolutely and should absolutely be shown sometimes as something human, and pleasant, and potentially just chill and fun to do, but like, we have an internal view of their heads, as such we should have seen SOME small nudge of physical attraction before hand. Some tug. Don’t give the audience nothing and then expect them to buy a relationship that, as it turns out in the end, was largely just based on good/fun sex.
Um, also; IF anyone else had written that whole “let’s cosign forms and get blood work done, lol look how long this is taking” pre-sex bit, then I honestly would have taken it as a “consent is a mood breaker and millennials are prudish idiots ruining sex with their safe sex and their checks for consent.” Idk. That joke felt a little off the mark. Just me being picky again.
Another thing? Nilanjana is fat! Yaaay! That was unexpectedly cool! (Would have preferred if they had said “fat” versus “overweight”. Fat’s not a dirty word, being fat isn’t a reflection on your morals and all that, but hey, not everyone is up with the latest fat acceptance stuff I guess. But like, “over” weight. Over whose weight? Over what supposed perfect weight? Is that supposed to be your short hand for “doesn’t exercise” ‘cause those sure as hell aren’t inherently connected. Correlation doesn’t equal causation. Pbthhh. >.>)
Speaking of being picky, or maybe this was just a very clever sign that Darryl and Nilanjana’s relationship wouldn’t work out in the long term, did Nilanjana REALLY have to get so jealous and competitive with Stephanie? Did she have to instantly dislike and distrust her because of “the way Darryl looked at her”? Because to recap that made all the women in the book in relation to Nilanjana, judgemental, shallow, and foolish (Lusia), cold, untrustworthy, and naive (Stephanie. “Naive” because of her religion in Nilanjana’s books and soooort of by the narrative as well), literally just a world threatening zealous cultist (Munn), or a goofy, initially untrustworthy sidekick (Jamillah).
I mean even Josh Crayton got better billing in this round then either his mum or Jackie who got tiny cameo’s each. =/ I would have liked to see more of those two.
While we’re on the subject of female characters. NIGHT VALE PLEASE. PLEASE give us some more background or remotely confirmed wlw!!! Jeeze. Seriously! We got another random background guy, or at least person getting refereed to with he/him pronouns who got a boyfriend, (The helicopter fellow) and though we already knew Josh was bi/pan otherwise not straight, he got a briefly mentioned boyfriend in this one! And of course the show focus is always Cecil and Carlos which racks the points waaay up for amazing, awesome mlm representation. We DID get a tiny cameo from Basimah Bashara which was neat, and a small moment with Michael Nguyen, but that’s the thing with those two and wlw in Night Vale in general isn’t it? While one can... hope? Somewhat with evidence? That Maureen and Michael might be a couple now, might be positive wlw representation, that was never actually made super clear. (Looking back on it it WAS made super clear with Basimah, so good on them with that!)
There’s also Jackie and Sheriff Sam. I HAVE to say, I was absolutely PREYING Jackie and Dana got together when Jackie mentioned she was dating someone from “high up in the government” so the let down I felt from finding out it was Sam instead came mostly from that. =p (Give Dana a girlfrieeend. Sure there’s always Alice Isn’t Dead but that ain’t the same. =p) Sam uses they/them pronouns and we can probably safely assume from that that they’re meant to be NB, genderqueer, genderfuild, or otherwise just not a cis character, so that’s wonderful, and Jackie dating them pretty much pings her as some variety of queer (or at least queer friendly, but then the majority of Night Vale is.) as well, so that’s also neat! I dooon’t think we had that from her before? Maybe there was something in the first book I’m forgetting. (I am personally mad happy that Jackie is queer or at least chill with nb folk, as she reminds me of myself in way too many ways. Awkward high-fives and “dude’s” and all.) That being said, how old is Sheriff Sam? I always pictured them at like 40 something from the voice. >.> Lol apparently not.
So on a more world building, less representation based note; Kevin.
Kevin is a prophet in the churches lore apparently. That’s neat? I guess? Here’s the thing, when WAS the Joyous Congregation founded? And my main concern; when did Kevin go through the Old Oak Door that showed him the smiling god for the first time??? The Congregation, or at least the general concept of the religion of the smiling god seems fully formed back during the Strex arc, and more then that Kevin hasn’t (as far as we know. Also please Finknor give us more Kevin. Triptych Broke. My. Heart. and I’m begging you.) been back to Night Vale or otherwise out of the desert other world since the time Steve pushed him in at the end of the Strex arc.
I don’t WANT to think that Kevin founded the whole religion. It’s always seemed very much like a thing that existed before him and more importantly not a thing he did before Strex!him if you will, but who knows I guess. =/
That’s the thing. I always thought of the smiling god AS ENTIRELY a Strex concept, and I’m going to wager a guess that at least at the start Finknor did too. It’s so tied into Strex. Inseparable from Strex’s meaning and purpose. Smile. Work. Be empty. Pretend to be happy. Smiling IS Strex, it’s a Strex thing, so it kind of made me feel... like it felt a bit rewrite-y to not even mention Strex at all during this book?
I mean was the smiling god NOT behind Strex? Was the congregation not at least back a couple years ago indistinguishable from Strex? Idk. These are all questions I have.
Talking about things that feel rewrite-y, I’m not sure I did the idea of Carlos actually being in the desert other world for TEN YEARS. Here’s the thing. We were, at the very least, as the audience lead to believe that Cecil and Carlos were thinking of LIVING there. Of moving there. a MASSIVE freaking part of the Carlos in the desert other world arc had us second guessing Carlos and Cecil’s whole relationship ffs! That WAS the subtext of the arc! The purpose! That Carlos seemed more interested in science and research of the desert other world then getting back to freaking Cecil! And now you’re going to claim that not only was he there ten years, which we had NO foreshadowing of during the arc at ALL as far as I can see, but he only ever wanted desperately to get home? Again the twist at the end of the desert other world arc is Cecil unexpectedly NOT MOVING THERE. WHAT? Nah man. That was some silly re-write stuff right there. Contradicting what world building we have on the desert other world until now.
Another thing highly related to that? Where the fuck was the nomadic giant army?? Or hell, even just Kevin and that dumb roller coaster they built? (I GUESS you could say that they all... died... ? And the roller coaster... vanished completely? But nah. Not really because aging doesn’t work there now does it?) Doug and Elisha thanks? Yet more stuff that made Carlos seem at home (and for that matter time passing relatively similarly from the sort of relationships he formed and reported on) in the desert other world. Ugh. I really don’t like that whole ten years thing. It seemed excessive too. Like two or even three years would have been more believable from what we saw of Carlos during that time, and even with only the single year I could already understand Carlos being traumatized from the event. Idk.
Speaking of world building for the desert other world? Assuming we keep with previous would building regarding it we are NOT done with it yet. Or rather, we probably shouldn’t be. There’s WAY too much going on there. Kevin’s still in there, he named it DESERT BLUFFS ffs. (I’m still waiting for the day we get the plot twist that the other world IS the desert bluffs we know from the past or something very similar to that. I also noticed a hella conspicuous absence of talk about desert bluffs OR the desert other world during the Huntokar revelations of the last finished arc. That place is MAD secret to the point that it’s not even on the radar of Huntokar, and probably The Glow Cloud, Distant Prince, Woman from Italy and other elder god type things.)
Then there’s Dana’s drawings up on the mountain. The spiraling murals of triangles I believe it was? We are NOT done with that place. I know at the end Darryl is like “well maybe the smiling god wasn’t that stupid centipede” and we’re supposed to at least sort of think like Nilanjana and be like “Yea huh. Sure. You just want to think that to protect your beliefs.” but honestly yeah, I don’t remotely think the centipede was really... the smiling god? Unless like I said, Kevin started the religion all together which I very much hope he didn’t? So yea, probably not the smiling god, DEFINITELY not the biggest threat in the desert other world. Up until now the “light” trying to get into Night Vale has been really obtuse and obscure. Really vague and therefore menacing and cool. I don’t think Finknor are bad enough writers to just toss all that away on a giant centipede. I’m a cynical person. Usually I’d add “At least I hope not” to that sentence, but damn it all if I don’t KNOW that Finknor are better writers then that.
Also there was the whole “hey wait the “ritual” to summon the god probably wasn’t just a coincidence” idea dropped in there to explore. So yeah. Lot’s to look at still.
Speaking of the ritual? Did you guys caaaaatch iiiiiit??? The jumping. How frantic jumping was a big part of the ritual? Maybe I’m just reaching but it sounded SO much like Kevin’s narration jumping bit from way back in The Sandstorm that Cecil mirrors with his own narration bit in his episode.
I’m SOOOO glad we got a glimpse into additional meaning for that kid jumping trying to recapture the feeling of flight scene for Kevin. It would be cool if more meaning was discovered for it in the future.
I’ve always read Cecil’s retrospective kid scene in those episodes as maybe relating too whatever happens in Cassette Tapes, or maaaybe some weird shit with Kevin himself in a metaphorical or otherwise obscured reference to why the heck the whole doubles thing happens anyway. (Also again, doubles, Desert bluff weirdness. Another thing I attributed to possibly the smiling god that could definitely not be if it were just a centipede, but honestly whether it’s a centipede or not I think it would be much more interesting if the smiling god was only a corrupting force for Desert bluffs and not the “weird Night Vale thing” that causes them to exist in the first place. And like I said? What’s cool is that it seems to not be Huntokar’s fault either that Desert Bluffs exists so that’s neat. That mean’s there’s some other weird shit going on there for us to find out.)
Ok one thing I forgot about the time rules of the desert other world and Kevin? You don’t AGE in the desert other world. Kevin when he contact Cecil in the last section of Triptych say’s he is very old. Now he could mean ancient as in “lived a very long time” but he specifically says “very old” and seems like his health might even me failing. Certainly he puts on a different voice. Anyway, all that leading up to the theory that we can extrapolate from that that Kevin will escape the desert other world at some point. Which isn’t too much of a stretch, and I think we all kind of expected (and I desperately hoped for after Triptych tyvm. FFS Cecil if you know how he ends up and also what he used to be like why not GO SAVE KEVIN FROM THAT FATE! Jeeze man! I really wish that had been part of the arc following Triptych and genuinely thought it might be. Like please. Cecil how can you just leave him there???)
All and all I liked the first novel a LOT more, but I liked this novel. Heck if it it wasn’t from Night Vale crew, meaning I had kind of hyped standards for it already, it probably would have been super awesome.
I mean there were some parts of the first novel I didn’t like, and I’m feeling some similar feelings regarding how the smiling god and desert other world turned out looking a bit mundane in this story and left a lot of “but if they were really just this, then why this old plot point” feelings just like the Man in the Tan Jacket did last novel (WHY was he interested in the underground city damn it? Especially with what we now know about Huntokar? WHY was he working with the Apache Tracker? What the hell were they doing? What was the post office all about?) but all and all I still preferred the first novel to this one. It felt more... human I guess. Had that good good recognizable story about a mom and her kid, growing up, parents, relationships, becoming an adult and a helluva lot of other stuff. Not that this one didn’t have a neat story about religion and science (that part honestly felt a little too basic for me) and fitting into one’s communities (that part was alright) but the first novel just hit the right cords more. Personally at least I felt more attached to everyone AND enjoyed the treatment of the themes more. Idk exacccctly why, but I absolutely enjoyed the first novel way more. It felt more like it’s own entity. A valid reason to use a different medium. A really new and cool thing where we could step into the shoes of likeable, fully rounded characters. This novel felt a lot more like a sometimes wacky one off live show with new characters or something. =/ I still enjoyed it, but not as much, and mostly the parts I did enjoy were all humor and surreal Night Vale goodness.
Alright. Well. That ends my rambling for now. I’m sure I’ll have many instances of trying to get to sleep and thoughts of the novel bouncing around in my head begging me to write them down or otherwise talk about them, so I guess I gotta emphasize the “for now” part.
This is long as shit and I’d be mildly surprised and utterly flattered if anyone can make it through my rambling.
