SPOILERS FOR SCTIR FOR +CH 200
CW: (possibly) Eating disorder ED, depression
Something that keeps me awake at night: at the beggining of the story, Yoohyun's death isn't so painful for the viewers, because we only see what is on the surface of the Han brothers' life. It's through memories and flashbacks that we get to learn 3 facts: Yoojin dedicated his entire life to Yoohyun, they parted ways and in the end they reunited, only for one of them die. That's the introduction of SCTIR for us. Moreover, Yoojin is desesperate to leave the past behind, so he doesn't linger on his traumatic memories for too long, hence why the pain of reading SCTIR isn't instant.
It is gradual.
Yoojin and we learn that the past was never erased. It still happened, and exists in the form of Yoohyun's body out in the cold. Gradually, it becomes more apparent how Yoojin is still so affected by his previous life, despite his fear resistance skill. It starts with small things like him avoiding eating unless someone tells him to do so, always occupying himself with tasks that could be handled by someone else, negative thoughts about himself for every single action he takes and so on. I love, with all my heart, the manhwa, but the novel makes it so much more apparent how Yoojin loathes himself, to the point he keeps wishing he wasn't a human being, rather an item for his brother to use. It's so messed up to want to abandon all your humanity, feelings and concept of self just so you can be of help.
SCTIR is fun to read, but even more so with the unreliable narrator that is Yoojin. He sees what he does as nothing impressive, considering the people he is surrounded with, despite running the kisengsu facility, negotiating with the hair loss company to develop a new product, managing Seok Hayan's research team, mantaining diplomatic ties with Japan, training and helping other hunters and, most importantly, caring for all the S classes. He worries for their well-being because it's only natural for him to do so, as the Perfect Caregiver.
And, in the middle of it all, the only thing Yoojin spares for himself is hate. He doesn't want to live long for himself, but rather for Yoohyun, even though Yoojin already has been through the pain of loss. When Yoojin died in chapter 241, the first thing that he thought was Yoohyun. He didn't even think about how much it hurted dying (with a freaking shot on the head)! He just wanted to reunite and soothe Yoohyun that he was okay.
Speaking of which, in Sigma's arc, as Yoojin was alone, he really stopped caring for his well-being, so Sung Hyunjae took that role and did everything he could to help Yoojin. But, for him to even have to create a quest just so Yoojin could eat is what sparked my lizard brain to write this post.
My point is, there isn't an arc dedicated for recovery (at least until the chapter I have read that is like, ~300) and that is beautiful, because Yoojin is still processing what he went through, and we get to see that. Yoojin has such an interesting character arc as he begins wanting to forget the past, as it is too painful, to start running after it. He can't let go of it, because letting it go means letting his little brother go too. Which is why he says he will never be okay again in chapter 278.

The thing about Han Yoojin is...
I don't think he would be more dangerous if he were an S-Class. He is dangerous specifically because he is F-Class.
That's because all of Yoojin's abilities, as well as his behaviours, are a direct consequence of him being a lower rank hunter in a world made to favour higher ranks. Yoojin's strenght comes from his determination, his knowledge, and his anger towards those who oppress the weak and vulnerable.
Lacking physical strenght and strong magical powers, he started studying hard everything there was to know about Dungeons, and he became an incredible strategist. Unable to protect himself from the criminals who took advantage of lower class hunters - and a society that did close to nothing to protect those lower classes -, he became a skilled liar, a manipulator, and he learned how to kill his enemies after tricking then into lowering their guards. He became ruthless, because if he wasn't, he wouldn't have survived, or he would have had to give up on his goal to try and protect his younger brother.
If Yoojin had been an S-Class, Yoohyun wouldn't have had as strong a reason to push him away in order to protect him. Yoojin wouldn't need to lie, manipulate, steal as much, because most things he could possibly want would simply be handed to him.
Even imagining a Yoojin that is both powerful AND as clever and ruthless as he is.... well, he'd be like Sung Hyunje. And even amazing Sung Hyunje is not as determined or imaginative as F-Class hunter Han Yoojin is.

Truly wild to me how Yoohyun sees other people. Like, it's stated a few times that Yoohyun doesn't care about anyone other than Yoojin. And we sort of get it from reading his occasional POV.
But I didn't really get it until they're talking about Yoojin dating, and Yoohyun goes "I'll only accept it if it's Peace." You know. THE HORNED FLAME LION. “It’s okay if my brother gets romantically involved with a lion.”
That's when I got it. To Han Yoohyun, other people are as alien to him as a monster. In fact, he identifies more with the monster, than other humans. To him, even though they speak the same language, and look the same, and were raised the same, they might as well be monsters. Or he's the monster.
But it makes his obsession with Yoojin so much more extreme. And puts so much else into context. We know he's more flame than person, but truly that was the moment it showed the most.

ok but imagine you’re one of if not the most powerful person in your country and there’s this random ass guy who’s about as strong as an average person, if with some random useful traits, who, for a moment, isn’t resistant to your mental skill, and when you try and use it on him, it works for about 5 seconds before he suddenly throws it off with something that doesn’t even exist within the system you get your power from and then, when he throws you off, he looks at you and calls you insignificant and then can’t walk for a day

I remember when I first read this manhwa and thought, "Huh, that is a weirdly boys love-esque intro for this random dude. I'm guessing we'll never see him again cause it's a one-off gag? Was it just a marketing thing?" Like I was legitimately confused and thought the story switched genre temporarily just for him for some reason. Like some brief fever dream before returning to the regular plot.
I have never been so happily wrong, at least about the brief/temporary nature of Hyunje's presence in the story.

#the sctir brain rot is real even tho I haven’t picked it back up in literal months#just thinking about Han Yoojin and Yoohyun and Yerim and this is why I write fic for them. cause I just. SCREAM#I’m dumping a lot of my thoughts into the authors notes so that when I post it hopefully tmrw I can inflict damage#but it’s just. I love them so much. I have so many agonies scenarios for them#hyj loves his brother so much that he can’t just let him die nor be alone. he’s constructed his whole life of being a caretaker#and if he can’t be a caretaker then what is he? what has he spent his entire life doing?#hyh loves his brother so much that he knows that he can’t get hyj to leave him even if hyh is sure that’s the only way hyj can be safe#not that he wants it of course but he breaks away from hyj so violently because he’s seventeen and he misses his brother and he’s hurting#but this is the only way he can see to actually take care of his brother for once#cause there’s also the guilt you know? my situation is very different from there’s but I’m also a younger sibling lol#and don’t get me started on yerim… oh yerim my childddd#I think about scenarios for all of them and I’m like ach it’s all about love#and it’s the fact that love isn’t the only thing that goes into a relationship#veering more into au territory but the brothers love each other very much but that doesn’t mean that hyh isn’t afraid or bitter thinking#that yerim is sort of a redo/better version of him#cause like Yoojin is older now and more prepared to actually take care of a child and yerim is more outwardly likeable than Yoohyun ever was#and it goes on and on and on and damn I really need to do he#*hw. so gotta leave this rant in the tags#but YEAH anywyas that’s why I hate it when people are just like yh is possessive haha! like you don’t GET it.#esp when people take that to then mean shopping time 🤮🤢🔫🔫🔫🔫🔫#jkb.talk

slight spoiler for sctir chp 242
"I believe you, Han Yoojin, raised Han Yoohyun well."
Could you imagine the absolute pride, sheer joy and relief that Yoojin felt hearing those words for what must've been the first time in his life, especially coming from Hyunjae?
Yoohyun is someone who, as a natural born s-class, is distant from people his entire life. He's cold and uncaring if they're unrelated to Yoojin, with everyone else unable to come to know Yoohyun as a result. Yoojin raised his brother without support, no one in the story really knows how he dedicated his life to his younger brother but with Yoohyun's apathetic exterior, it's easy to misinterpret.
Then you have Hyunjae, another natural born s-class, someone who knows what Han Yoohyun should've been. Someone who's almost perfect and fantastical, yet so much more human than you'd believe. Who achieves everything he desires, yet Yoojin recognises hard work and admires him all the more. Someone who Han Yoojin sees as a fellow adult that he doesn't have to take care of and genuinely trusts his opinions. Perhaps the only person that Yoojin may ever allow to see the parent that he is, that struggled to raise Yoohyun.
Hyunjae tells Yoojin that he raised his brother well; to Yoojin who was always alone as a parent and fears that he may have changed Yoohyun for the worst, it means everything.
"In fact, there's no perfect way to raise people. You simply need to try your best, and I think you certainly did that."

One of my favourite things about the end of The S-Classes That I Raised novel (major spoilers ahead),
is the realisation that the reason why Yoojin and Hyunjae's relationship looks so much like a love story at times is because it actually, honestly is.
Like, we know that sctir is a novel about love since the beginning, that's not surprising. Yoojin's capability for loving monsters (both literal monsters and the human kind) and the power of that love is at the centre of the plot.
But by the time you get to the end, you realise - and the author confirms this themselves in their final Note - that Yoojin's relationship and love for 2 specific people was the true core of the story, and what allows him to save the world in the end:
One is, of course, Yoohyun.
And that love is absolute; you cannot say that it's inevitable, cause we know Yoojin had to make a choice when he was a child between Yoohyun and his parents, and he almost chose his parents, but from the moment he decided to love Yoohyun onward, then it was unconditional and eternal. It's the love of a brother, but also the love of a parent and a caretaker.
And the other person is Sung Hyunjae.
And that love is not unconditional nor inevitable or absolute at all. It's not something that can be taken for granted. We actually see, because of how it ended between them before the regression, and thanks to the White Bird's power of seeing possible futures, that there were so many timelines where Yoojin and Hyunjae would have never come to care about each other fully (tho they are always at least somewhat interested in each other, because their personalities are actually really compatible).
But the White Bird also sees that the only possible future where the world is saved is the one where they love and hold on to each other. And that is how the story goes!
So, just like a romance novel, the necessary end is the one where they both love each other and accept that love. And it's not easy to get there! It's a slow burn.
From meeting to getting to know each other, appreciating each other's skills and intelligence, finding out they have fun together but still not trusting each other, to working on building that trust.
They go from a strong but superficial mutual interest to actually caring about each other as people.
Yoojin has to go through the self-doubt of feeling inferior and fearing that Hyunjae will lose interest in him. Hyunjae has to learn to stop pushing Yoojin away because he doesn't know how to handle having someone he cares about so much, and also someone that cares about him, because nobody in the world (except in part Song Taewon) likes Sung Hyunjae as a person, he is only ever admired from afar.
And in the end, after going through ups and downs and a few "break-up arcs", they make it. They accept their own feelings and each other's feelings.
And that's when Yoojin makes the choice to use the power that the transcendents gave him at the very beginning of the novel, to save Hyunjae. Not the world. Not even Yoohyun! Just Sung Hyunjae!
Yeah, the whole "gather 50 S-Class people", the very thing that gives the novel its title. That is not a power that is used to save the world!! It was meant to, but Yoojin is "selfish", and he will always choose to save the people close to him first.
And being able to love someone so selfishly gives Yoojin the power to save the whole world, too. As a bonus! A reward. Just a side effect.
So yeah. Is it romantic love? No. Canonically, there's almost no romantic love in the whole novel.
But is it a love story?? Yeah. Absolutely it is.

tsctir chapter novel where Hyeonje hugged Yoojin from the back before he turned Yoojin around to hide his face from Yoohyun and Yerim because Yoojin was clearly having a panic attack.
I remember Yoojin briefly mentioned that he doesn't know what Hyeonje saw in his (panic driven) face, but Hyeonje was "slightly uncharacteristically flustered" AND NOBODY EVER TALKED ABOUT THIS?
The way Hyeonje was clearly not used to people especially han Yoojin inadvertently showing vulnerability in front of him, or maybe it was because he was seeing Yoojin like that for the first time, that he wasn't used to it and flustered for a second because our might Hyeonje didn't know what to do in a situation for the first time. bro definitely was NOT used to comforting people during panic attacks episodes lol.
He didn't force Yoojin or anything. he knew Yoojin doesn't wang to look fragile in front of the kids, so he turned his face to do exactly that. covered his face, hiding him. and then made jokes to Yerim and Yoohyun to distract them for Yoojin so Yoojin could breathe for a second. all the while probably had never done this before.
and Yoojin's second panic attack after the Virtual Reality (Sigma arc) Dungeon, Hyeonje picked Yoojin up and "took wide strides" far enough from the others because Yoojin needed space, needed an out. he even used that soundproofing item so Yoojin could cry his heart out. he's just considerate like that. then he gave him space again, when Yoohyun is around, let this arms (that supported Yoojin) go to hug his brother.
and when they met again, Yoojin had many other things to think about that he pushed down the issue with panic attacks, but Hyeonje brought it up, still thinking about him (obviously) and– and you could SEE Hyeonje spent a few days after that thinking about it, considering what to do with Yoojin, how to get Yoojin talk about it.
