I love how chapter 414 gives us this particular insight into Crescent Moon's mind.
I always appreciated how the main villain in sctir has love as her main motivation, making her the perfect enemy for Yoojin; 2 characters whose powers and personalities are both shaped by love, but who understand and live that love in completely different ways.
Crescent Moon, whose love is so absolute (and so empty), she is literally incapable of hating anyone; Yoojin, who burns with hate almost as much as he burns with love - never without reason - and will never forgive those who hurt the people under his care.
Crescent Moon, who would sacrifice anyone in order to save the worlds she so deeply love; Yoojin, who would always choose saving his loved ones over saving the world.
But this chapters gives us a new layer of this dichotomy that I never truly noticed before, while reading machine translation.
Yoojin is also possessive with the people he loves. They are "his kids". But that possessiveness is there to shape the way HE behaves. They are his, so he must protect them. They are his, so he can never give up on them, even if they hurt him or push him away.
Meanwhile, Crescent Moon is possessive in the way she sees the objects of her love as her belongings. Her tools. Meaning she can do whatever she wants with them.
It explains how she could hurt and use Sung Hyunje so much, while also confirming that he truly was the one she loves the most.

Spoilers for msch / sctir ~853
Oooh, I still get mad at Sung Hyunje for that scene— when he decides to bury his emotions for Han Yoojin and he says “Good job. But it seems you’ve failed.” It’s the idea that their love was conditional. That there was something to be gained out of it, that for all the development and vulnerability that progresses throughout the novel, Yoojin and Hyunje never truly stepped away from their origin as item and skill. As people with roles to play.
And that’s why in this arc with Sung Hyunje without his emotions and Han Yoojin losing his memories, you’re faced with the knowledge that every action they make is deliberate. It’s moving on from this transactional relationship of Hyunje seeking salvation and Yoojin seeking validation. Han Yoojin being forced to acknowledge whether Sung Hyunje is someone he would still save, even if he were to never reciprocate any affection. Hyunje being confronted with that sort of selfless love, of someone who would hesitate to kill him, of a Yoojin who lost his memories and yet would still decide to chase him. And Hyunje, both pre & post-regression depending on Yoojin’s memories and affection for him to keep him going even as he denies Yoojin’s presence. (Yoojin calling himself useless pre-regression yet the part of him that Hyunje depended on was the core part of him, his caregiver abilities.)
Then Hyunje falls. He accepts the idea of being Yoojin’s only failure, he tells Yoojin that he can erase his emotions again but confesses to Taewon that he can’t. Sung Hyunje decides to hold onto the memories of Han Yoojin and walk straight into the hands of Crescent Moon, bearing death over and over again but still has his love for Yoojin which ties into his desire to live. Them defining themselves as mutual guardians, as friends, as partners, no longer using roles as a basis for give and take but rather accepting them as titles describing their mutual affection for one another.
It’s the catalyst that causes Yoojin and Hyunje to come to the decision that they’ll love each other just because they can.

Final Gratitude, Han Yoojin's only naturally selfish skill
Spoilers for msch/sctir ~870
Final Gratitude, Final Thanks, whatever one may call it, was always such a curious skill to have given that every single one of Han Yoojin's skills is rooted in support, for the benefit of others. He literally has to pay for a D-rank stab skill so that he at least has one offensive skill in his arsenal at all times. So why did Han Yoojin, of all people, end up with such a skill?
Final Gratitude ties into how the identity of Han Yoojin didn’t exist outside of being a caregiver, and the only way for him to be powerful was when he no longer was one. It’s the only original skill that Han Yoojin had that solely benefits him because it only occurs when he no longer has a ward to dedicate his existence towards. Some sick, twisted play on the possibilities of Han Yoojin. All his focus and support onto those he claims his own falls back onto him in the form of potential unreached, how everything they ever were was everything he could’ve been. That Han Yoojin could only exist if his children didn’t.
It can also be an extension of Han Yoohyun, for everything that he is is everything his Hyung made, so it’s only natural for that to return to its origin, no?
And with a quiet farewell, Final Gratitude disappears at the end of the main novel, for Han Yoojin has finally solidified his identity alongside his role as a caregiver. (That he too, is allowed to care for himself.)

So we have the whole Han Yoohyun being the base of Yoobin because (I'm going off the mtl and it was confusing trying to understand the whole paradox situation) they explained that the whole world/caregiver situation was needed to set up a Source that did not devour because the title would be passed down/automatically applied (or something?)
But.
In a sense, the two of them are still "devouring a world" especially considering that so much of the narrative (mainly due to Han Yoojin's personal experiences) expresses the idea that caregiving = sacrifice.
Han Yoojin choosing to become their world was at a loss of himself, he made himself a foundation or maybe a shell that encapsulates them whole while they solidify their existences to fit the future they want. And even as we progress through the story and stray away from the basis of 'sacrifice', the very act of nurturing is giving away parts of yourself. It's loving without the expectation of being loved back. It's being swallowed up slowly, drop by drop and maybe if you're strong enough, you'll still be whole by the end of it.
Whether it's a fire that burns or a Source that creates, both of them need fuel to exist and Han Yoojin is simply the one that decided to burn for them.
---- Warning: Major Spoilers for Ending of the Novel -----
Q. How does Yoobin perceive Yoohyun? Does he remember his past life? Or is there a possibility that he will remember it as he grows up? Does Yoojin want Yoobin to remember Yoohyun?
Han Yoobin is a 'Source' who originally couldn't be born without swallowing the world, so he is greatly influenced by his nurturer, Han Yoojin.
Therefore, this will depend on how Han Yoojin separates Han Yoohyun and Han Yoobin. Han Yoojin recognized Han Yoobin as a different person, but it is impossible to completely erase the memories of 25-year-old Han Yoohyun.
If Han Yoojin is able to thoroughly separate them in his mind, Han Yoobin will not even remember his past life, and if he accidentally conflates the two, Han Yoobin will experience confusion in his self-identity.
There will inevitably be ups and downs, but if Han Yoojin is able to be steadfast and maintain a balance, then Han Yoobin will also be able to accept his past life smoothly^^

omg your latest shj comic??? i am utterly in love and going insane with how much it makes me feel! and the choice of ksy as the person beyond the 'wall' / being hidden by the shadow, my mind is churning!!!
they're such a fascinating but underexplored duo - i would love to hear your thoughts on the shj and ksy relationship?
WELL!! DON"T MIND IF I DO!
first of all, i didn't want to use stw or hyj for many reasons. for starters, it's not shippy- no but. their dynamic invites of thinking about something. intense if you will. whatever way you interprete their relationships, they are not "normal". but ksy... she is the one who took the lead with no shj in the picture, she is the one who occupied the space next to him in the guild and acted as a bridge. bright and cheerful and sunny!! brave enough to deal with him!! with no rot inside for him to dig in etc etc. she is Normal (as normal as high ranks get yeah, but in comparison) and he cared for her. cared enough to think of her and how she's doing back in the dungeon, you know? there is a wall between them which neither can breach. Again, if you think of her in comparison to stw and hyj....... while there ARE glimpses of understanding betwen the last two and shj, i don't think it's possible for him and ksy. and yet. he made an effort. she kept making an effort and treating like maybe a scare, but her guild leader nonetheless.
ANYWAY!!! tldr i don't think they can understand each other, not with how thick the barrier between them is. but they care still! it's very sweet, i think. you may not get them, but still make an effort to help them out. does this make sense?

spoilers for msch / sctir 402+
I know we love to focus on Han Yoojin's sense of self-hatred and how he expresses that very violently through his tendency to immediately try to murder alternate versions of himself. But I'd also like to point out that Han Yoojin loves a good fight.
He got invested in being a hunter, he adores finding out people's strengths and weaknesses. He's been kidnapped so many times that he can't count it on two hands. Yoojin has an abundance of skills and a sharpened sense of bloodlust, instincts matching S-classes but a body that can't keep up. As an F-rank he couldn't afford to hold back in any confrontation and so he always fights to kill. Something which he can rarely explore with the people around him because of their strength differences mixed in with their concern for one another.
He meets dungeon!HYJ and instantly decides that it's fair game. Someone he matches in a fight, who he doesn't have positive feelings for and as such refuses to hold back, while knowing his counterpart wholeheartedly agrees? Yeah, Han Yoojin's fighting this man out of self-loathing but also for fun.
Han Yoojin is someone who loves giving his all, and what better way to do so than a fight to the death?

Sung Hyunjae & Self. God, Human.
Tumblr media
i find it very interesting that sung hyunjae has such a strong Self - something that is shown even in the beginning with small details like how picky he can be with most things (to the point of seeming fussy despite his composed image). a dichotomy for someone who has been denied autonomy of existence- denied a Self- in the first place.
with all of his hundreds of overlapping existences, he still retained the identity of "sung hyunjae, seseong guild leader"- even at the point he lost his memories, even when he was being reset at a cosmic level- he desperately clung to retain his sense of self.
the ego is so important to his character, despite- in spite of the crescent moon's plans of taking it away altogether. she made the contract with that purpose in the first place. but it is a bit cruel and ironic that the end goal was to strip him of his ego and make him into a perfect being to replace the Source, but in the process she gave him such a strong existence, persistent identity, a stubborn sense of Self.
as all things do, this brought me to hyunjae & yoojin.
we see it first with sigma- when yoojin acknowledged his existence and freed him from the dungeon- hence creating a separate entity with his own unique existence.
it is yoojin, who sees sung hyunjae as a human first underneath all of his semi-godlike glory. who finds the fact that he can't open a convenience store kimbap endearing. who acknowledges every sung hyunjae to have ever existed in all of his lifetimes as not just sung hyunjae of the first world or sung hyunjae of the second world- but as a real, individual person.
sung hyunjae of the world with many lakes. sung hyunjae of the world with two suns. sung hyunjae who likes to knit and has a complex about his baby face. sung hyunjae who picks the crust off of his bread, who likes to keep an odd assortment of trinkets in his inventory. sung hyunjae who enjoys fishing, who eats his shrimp tails, who likes to cook for people.
sung hyunjae- who, despite going through every day in the excruciatingly painful boredom of a repeated existence, still loves people and their mundane lives, still cares for children, still looks after people who depend on him, still still still. it is all sung hyunjae.
yes, he has clear parallels to crescent moon- he was molded after her image of a perfect Source, after all. it would seem that like her, he can care for everyone equally and just that, no more and no less. a suffocating, helpless experience for the recipient. he's so much like her, so no wonder he was the one chosen by her.
but in reality he became so much more than that. a unique existence as the little moon- but quite unlike the crescent moon.
sung hyunjae is capable of anger, of loss, of sympathy, and of frustration- a myriad of conflicting human emotions.
he has a wish to stay for every birthday, a wish to stay for every funeral.
and in the process of turning him into a God, he was made more human than ever.

Spoilers for sctir / msch 700~
Realised that the Transcendents, aiming for Sung Hyunje to win the bet, deliberately chose fishing and farming competitions because his hobbies are gardening and fishing/fish-keeping.
Him being so knowledgeable and skilled because it’s the only repetitive hobby that has enough variation to remain mildly stimulating. And it also being the few rounds that he does lose to Han Yoojin because it’s tasks that involve growth, involve living things which in the face of a caregiver were free to pursue whatever path they wanted.
That for every step and repeated motion Sung Hyunje has followed, Han Yoojin comes in to break every limit and impossibility, for Sung Hyunje cultivates perfection while Han Yoojin cultivates potential.

spoilers for sctir / msch chp 700~
Love that when Han Yoojin gets forced to marry someone in the game of life arc, he chooses the octopus and goes,
“The only option I felt at ease with was one – or rather, one creature.
My fishing rival.”
And then Geunseo-nim immediately decides that the next match between Yoojin & Hyunje will be a fishing competition. Like—
Well. Alright then.
