Tojoctober Day 2 - Face-Off

Majima needs to let some steam off in the only way he knows how.

Saejima walked into the entrance of the Tojo Clan HQ, its grand staircase was a sight he was very familiar with.

What he's not familiar with is the man standing menacingly in the open room, with his back turned. This sight doesn't scare, but moreso confuses Saejima, especially since he knows the man in front of him like the back of his hand, and this isn't normal behavior.

But what's normal with Goro Majima?

"Uhhh... Majima?"

"So... yer here, brother."

Majima spins around, his iconic knife sheathed in one hand. "Ya know what it's time for." he says, the tanto sliding out of the sheath as Majima assumes his fight stance, beckoning Saejima towards him.

Saejima immediately notices differences in Majima's stance, his face, and his attitude. He could tell his brother was serious. But also... something was plaguing him. It was his way of saying “Fight me so I can ignore my problems.” Inwardly, Saejima is grateful he’s known Majima for so long, even after his stint in jail. If anyone knows Majima's nonverbal signs of struggle, it's him. Outwardly, Saejima merely smirks.

“Alright. Show me what you've got." Saejima assumes his own stance, ready for whatever his oath brother can throw at him.

And so, the two brothers face off, as Majima's laughs, knife swishes, and grunts from both men fill the lobby. Miraculously, they fight in such a way that the area around them is barely disturbed, an act of grace that would be unexpected from this situation. The sight of these two legends duking it out freaks out some of the newer members of the clan. To everyone else, it's an absolute spectacle. It's not every day you get to witness the advisors of the chairman brawl in the middle of HQ, after all.

After what feels like forever, the fight ends, both men panting heavily. Saejima is the first to catch his breath. He wipes a bit of blood from his brow, where Majima had nicked him with his blade.

"Sharp as ever, Majima."

Majima laughs through his own breaths.

"You've improved, definitely. About knocked the wind outta me."

Saejima walks past Majima, towards the doorways that lead to the courtyard. Majima silently follows.

Now that the first half of the process of Majima’s healing was done, Saejima was prepared for what was next. Whatever came next.

Saejima had a feeling he knew what was plaguing Majima. The subject could not be breached here, however, not with this many eyes on them.

They just needed to get the fuck out of the stuffy office.

this post is fearmongering. the results of this study are concerning and should definitely be a matter of public discussion, but this is certainly not the conclusion the researchers came to.

the point of the study was to assess the risks of exposure to toxic metals- something one of the co-authors notes are “ubiquitous” fwiw- via menstrual products. Their research confirmed that these metals are indeed present in tampons, but no further conclusions are drawn. it is possible the metal entered into the cotton from the soil, which is a well-known phenomenon; cotton is so good at lifting heavy metals that it has actually been suggested as a part of the solution for revitalizing polluted ground.

the authors conclude with an acknowledgement that the study should be repeated- their sample size was 60 tampons- and a suggestion that further testing ought to be done to indicate whether or not these metals can even leech out of the tampon in the first place, let alone whether or not such leeching could occur at levels deleterious to human health.

there is, in fact, a body of research- too small, for sure, but much larger than this single study- indicating that long-term proper tampon use has no observable negative impact on health. i am grateful and thrilled that more research is being done and i hope that this study is the first of many on this line of questioning, but i am really frustrated at this post and the response it got.

obviously, if this study alters your approach to menstrual health, more power to you. consumers should be informed-risk-takers, and menstrual health is double-obviously a very personal choice. but it definitely wasn't the researchers concluding that you ought to “avoid using tampons at all cost," only this tumblr user did. the lead author of the paper, in fact, specifically says that she hopes people do NOT panic about the results.

(the notes of the post were disappointing. people affirming that they knew they were right to be suspicious of tampons all along, or even recommending alternatives that actually have very little to no research regarding the safety of long-term use, etc. it’s a different conversation, but categorical distrust of tampons is old-school misogyny. you certainly shouldn't wear them if you don’t want to, but there is nothing inherently scary or wrong about them, and people who prefer them are not being reckless or crass.)
