Botulism rly is crazy. One of nature’s funniest ways of saying “fuck you, please die”
for real!! I'm not exaggerating I used to be so so so afraid of botulism (now I'm only so afraid). the silent odorless colorless tasteless etc assassin that could be lurking in your pantry, fun!
also horrifying that it's pretty easy to produce and takes such a small amount to be lethal?? something around .1 micrograms if I remember correctly for inhaled botulism. something something one of nature's greatest pranks...
also in case I've worried anyone sorry lol but it's very rare and is mostly (at least at the household foodborne level) a result of improper home canning techniques so if you do can your own food please please use tested recipes and follow them exactly (that's recipe AND process!)
#when I first decided I wanted to can I almost talked myself out of it bc it sounded so scary asldkfjs#but it's fine if you follow the right steps#in the us every state (and there's a national level I think?) has some regulation agency that lab tests extensively#also companies like ball that make canning equipment have lots of lab-tested recipes and whatnot#there very much is a science to it though you can't just put any food in a can and think it will be safe#also don't forget to adjust processing time for altitude#okay this has unintentionally been a psa#also I'm glad someone else knows what botulism is I mentioned it to my brothers and they didn't know#asks

ragatha/agatha and pomni/penny human hcs!
(r)agatha:
is an english teacher!
yes she still loves horses. she used to ride them, & she loves old western movies.
owns cowboy hat and boots.
analytical and loves long & winding conversations.
has a very happy cat named sandwich.
patches her own clothes, doesn't have kids but if she did she would embroider their names into their belongings.
she still plays cello, she loves music in general, probably sings like an angel.
can't do any mathematics.
can drive, but like a lunatic. somehow has never had an accident though, so it's fine.
probably has a cute little baby blue/yellow car now, but definitely had a beat up offroader truck at some point that got put to good use. or maybe she still does, i'm not the boss.
total lesbian, a bit of a heartbreaker but not intentionally (women just keep falling for her)
goes to town/neighbourhood/community meetings. likely is/was in a knitting circle
absurd number of quilts in her home
pomni/penny:
is an accountant as we know, and cannot cook for shit as we know.
no pets she can barely take herself for walks. is more similar to a cat, but had a dog growing up. would love a collie or a dalmatian probably.
would name the dog something stupid like Thermometer Johnson.
she can drive, but nervously.
really quick thinker, like impressively, unless she's under HUGE amounts of stress. is literally always thinking at 100mph.
no sense of interior decor or personal style. all practical, kind of butch. really does kill a suit.
very much lesbian but not fully to terms with it. probably had short-lived relationships with men in which she was 'content' but didn't really care for it. seeing agatha as agatha for the first time was probably a crazy punch to her little gay heart. not to mention the cowboy gear.
autistic
watches 90s anime to wind down
listens to every single genre of music. passes a lot of time with headphones in, slowly making her way thru the entire world's discography
owns no band merch or anything though she just listens
can't sleep without a fan on, thunderstorm 12hr audio, blackout curtains, weighted blanket, water nearby
does not sleep a lot
both of them (going to call them pomni and ragatha for convenience):
didn't immediately recognise one another. i havent got an exact idea of how they reunited after getting out, but there were tears.
bonded in a very rare and unique way - they got to revel in the newfound joys of real life again. they got to eat delicious food, go on long, unobstructed walks in the real sun, be warmed by it, chew on ice cubes and shiver at the pain, listen to each other's heartbeats, listen to real music, read real books, smell soaps and flowers and sauces. they went to the supermarket together and read all the labels, and bought one of each type of fruit to try between them, and smelled all the candles, and touched all the blankets. spent a lot of time holding hands and kissing and i'm sorry to say, probably having sex, because holy shit, i'm real, you're real, we're real
now live together in ragatha's apartment, after pomni moved out of her small and confusingly-furnished flat.
both of them feel inadequate from time to time. this is resolved by a stern-but-loving talking-to.
sandwich likes pomni very much. pomni doesn't really get cats, but loves sandwich a great deal, and enjoys letting her sleep on her lap.
ragatha is very pleased to see her girls getting along.
ragatha cooks, pomni chops the veg. she often doesn't fuck it up
pomni cleans a lot as a 'thank you for letting me live here, i love you'. she's very much acts of service, ragatha is words & physical touch <3
they watch a lot of movies together. depending on how long they've been stuck, they might have culture to catch up on
ragatha wants to have a house with a garden one day. pomni starts germinating seeds from their fruit & veg like a weird science experiment. ragatha is delighted when she is presented with a baby tomato plant.
clothes are shared. ragatha's are bigger, but most of pomni's are ill-fitting anyway so it can go both ways. ragatha likes to dress pomni up in different outfits and have her do a little fashion show. pomni pretends not to savour the confidence boost.
pomni starts sleeping more

☣️🍳Krahn n Akna revival!!!
ive redesigned my twst kronk and yzma to their true and FINAL form [im fr this time cos im really happy with them] !!
complete bios under the cut blehh 😋
rbs>likes !!
Name: Krahn Quiroz
Age: 31
Height: 210 cm
Homeland: Sunshine Lands
Affiliation: Night Raven College Staff, The Squirrel Scouts
Occupation: Head-Chef of the cafeteria, Teacher's assistant, Scout facilitator
Subject taught: Science-centric subjects since he mainly assists Akna in teaching
Favorite food: Papas a la Huancaina
Hobby: Dabbles in a LOTTT of hobbies, but cooking is his main one!
As the Head Chef, Krahn is one of the few friendly faces in the Night Raven College staff, he has that warm and welcoming aura to him that's able to put anyone at ease just by being around him. He's popular with the students by how nice he is, and he's friends with a lot of students that pass by the cafeteria for lunch. He and Akna are a package deal, and are often seen together, and even gets dragged into helping Akna with her schemes. Krahn may be rather dim witted most of the time, in fact he isn't exactly the brightest tool in the shed, but ultimately he has a heart of gold, and is genuine in everything he does.
Trivia:
Krahn is very athletic and has inhumane stamina, you could say he's a gymbro, he can run around the field track for like 10 hours straight and not even show ANY signs of fatigue.
also serves as a scout facilitator for an elementary scout group in his off time! he's great friends with the kids there, they often just go hiking to explore nature ..and to learn how to talk to squirrels.
Great friends with Ashton, they're workout buddies!! Though Krahn isn't too keen on Ashton's … raw egg eating habits.
His hugs AND his spinach puffs are life-changing
Name: Akna Yglesias
Age: 35
Height: 185 cm
Homeland: Shaftlands
Affiliation: Night Raven College Staff
Occupation: Substitute Alchemy/Potions professor
Subject taught: Sciences [Alchemy, Potions, and Biology]
Favorite Food: Ceviche
Hobby: Making potions, studying alchemy, trying to take Divus' place as Alchemy teacher
Theatrical, grandiose, and short-tempered, Akna Yglesias is a teacher at Night Raven College who has a very commanding presence and is someone who knows exactly what she wants and goes through various lengths to get it. As a substitute not only does she fill in on unavailable science teachers, she is also responsible for co-facilitating science-centric clubs. Her schemes to take over the teaching position for herself are over-the-top and her jealousy moreso. She's a genius in alchemy, but Divus had long been established as the Alchemy Professor when she started working in NRC, and has vowed to take him down ever since.
Trivia:
Values lab safety more than anything, and always changes her clothes into something more appropriate for her classes. Enforces this onto Divus and her students as well, much to their dismay.
Is one to call Divus out on any mistakes he makes, she's a substitute after all, shouldn't she help? Give him a nudge? A rough shove even?
Has a very close familial bond with Krahn, a bond that has existed way before their years working for NRC
During her years of working, she's constructed a secret lab in the undergrounds of the campus, and all without Crowley's knowledge, how Crowley hasn't figured it out even she can't tell why.

ᴊᴏʜɴɴʏ ᴄᴀɢᴇ & ᴋᴇɴꜱʜɪ ᴛᴀᴋᴀʜᴀꜱʜɪ ᴛᴀᴋɪɴɢ ᴄᴀʀᴇ ᴏꜰ ᴀ ꜱɪᴄᴋ ʀᴇᴀᴅᴇʀ
guess whos getting sick.... yippee!! i like never get sick and when i do im like completely OUT. rn it's just a sore throat and a kind of cough but it's been getting worse all day so i figured i'd get this out and donesies with before i cant even leave my bed lol
cw: gn reader, just fluff, JEWISH JOHNNY (hes jewish and you arent gonna tell me otherwise), not proofread
⎯ Johnny Cage
Johnny does not care that you could possibly get him sick, he is all over you. Like not once does he leave your side. And if he has to? Then he's just picking you up and taking you with him. Even if you complain that you wanna stay in bed.
He's got a weeks worth of takeout planned. All your favorite comfort food, something cold for your throat, something warm, too. And he's always got a nice, cold bottle of water for you. He's very intent on you staying hydrated.
We all know he can't cook. But this man has ONE (1) thing he actually can make without messing up. Two words. Jewish. Penicillin. Good ol' Matzoh Ball Soup. Guaranteed to cure you (don't take his word). And it's damn good. It's the perfect temperature, and it runs down your throat so smoothly that it- for once- doesn't feel like sandpaper. It's bliss. Pure damn bliss.
Of COURSE you're gonna end up cuddled up on the couch or in bed, watching some sort of movie or show. It's Johnny Cage. But, he also just likes talking with you. Or, to you. He doesn't want you to lose your voice, now. He'll ramble on and on about cinema, history- literally any, but of course he's a bit partial to Sento and the Taira clan specifically.-, and physics, science, yada yada.
And he talks and talks for days on end. Until you get better. But who am I kidding, he talks then, too. And when you finally get better, it's actually a miracle that Johnny isn't sick. But he's even more clingy, after.
⎯ Kenshi Takahashi
Unlike Johnny, Kenshi knows to give you space. Doesn't mean he isn't right by you the entire time, though. He's constantly checking your temperature, checking in on you in general. Do you need anything? How about a warm bath? Something to eat? Water? It's a constant stream of questions. He's just so worried about you, even if it is just a common cold.
He does order takeout as well, but it usually just amounts to soups and what not, he's kind of hellbent on making sure you eat the right foods and not something that could even make the cold slightly worse. He'll let popsicles slide, though... just no icecream. Hell no.
About that bath... Kenshi puts his heart and soul into it, for whatever reason. Epsom salt, some vitamin C bath foam, maybe some petals just to make it a little fancy. Oh, he's got it all. He wants to make sure you're at the height of relaxation.
Music and Audiobooks. He's got then playing, unless you ask for silence. Of course, he plays them kinda softly. He's a bit afraid of you getting a headache. It offers some sort of mental stimulation, though, while your huddled up in bed. He wants to make sure you don't feel bored while you're sick.
And once you're better... he's got so much laundry done. Like the very moment you're all energized and feeling better, he's like "oh the dryers done!". Kenshi wants to make sure there's no risk of you getting sick again, and to be honest, he pampers you a little extra, too.

you know, they tell you all about childhood wonder, but i made spaghetti squash last night, and i told my 6 year old, "look! this looks like an ordinary squash, but look what happens when you cook it! it's going to turn into spaghetti!" and i roasted it and took it out of the oven and showed her, "look! look! check this out! it's like magic! spaghetti!!!!" digging my fork into the squash, the little strings coming out looking so goddamn much like spaghetti, in a way that still amazes me, as an adult, even though i've seen it happen before, it's still incredible to me, holy shit, here's this thing that grows out of the ground and we figured out that if you roast it the insides look identical to this other thing that exists, that is also edible, and they taste pretty good with the same seasonings and sauces.
"look! the squash turned into spaghetti! holy cow!" i even wrapped the strings around my fork, like a spaghetti commercial.
my 6 year old looked at my fork, looked at me, with a world weary glare, then rolled her eyes. "i'm not going to eat that." "ok, ok, you don't have to eat it, but isn't it cool?! how does it do that?!" "whatever." whatever! how can you whatever seeing a spaghetti squash for the first time?!
i tell you, we were sold a bill of goods about childhood wonder. there are so many things that amaze me that don't amaze my kids.
when i think about it, i remember that i was the same way, when i was that age, when i learned to read bigger books; i read a few science books, then i felt like i knew everything, and nothing amazed me anymore, everything that could be imagined had already happened. everything had a rational explanation. christmas lights were just electricity. mickey mouse is just a guy in a costume. vegetables are just vegetables and not that exciting; food doesn't need to be exciting, after all, it just needs to be safe and familiar.
--
just a few hours after the spaghetti squash, after i had put them to bed -- i heard the gentle click of my kid's bedroom door. her head popped into the bathroom, where i was taking a bath.
"i can't go to sleep, because i'm afraid."
"afraid of what?"
"i was watching a show about rattlesnakes, and a gila monster was about to eat them, and i turned it off, but now i'm still thinking -- what if i was a snake, and a gila monster was about to eat me?"
"...well, you are very lucky, because you are not a snake. and there are no gila monsters here."
"yes, but what if i was a snake? and what if there was a gila monster?"
"but you are a kid, and you are safe in your bedroom."
"but what if i wasn't?"
--
what i love about kids is that they are full of surprises. you can't predict how they'll react to things. adults follow scripts, but kids write their own. especially in these brief, precious years -- between 4 and 10 -- when they have enough language to communicate and process the world, but they're not following any scripts yet. and they have big emotions because they bristle against all the scripts being presented to them.
so you get all these funny contrasts -- the big christmas decorations are "whatever," but what's really fun is twisting these fuzzy pipe cleaners together. this toy doll is kind of fun, but what's really fun is pouring water in her mouth until she's sopping wet, cracking up because it's like she peed all over herself, then deciding to take a bath at noon. (taking a bath at noon is fun, taking a bath at bathtime is not.) the "make your own cookie" pre-made set is not fun, but mixing a big bowl of flour until everything is covered in white definitely is.
i love them because they're right. because we're both right. because they fill my life with contrasts. the spaghetti squash IS amazing, and it's ALSO pretty boring. coloring on paper IS limited fun, coloring on walls DOES feel liberating. it's true that we are not snakes, but what if we WERE?
we are always showing each other alternative ways of being!

Some sort of emo Cross shit idk what
Summary:
The Bad Guys were never very accepting of people, Cross however, they straight up didn't like. The bullying goes on and Cross can barely take it, he uses knives and lighters to ground himself but... he goes to far.And passes out, only for Killer to find him.Aka, the story of how Cross became the gang's favorite emo.
Notes:
I'm not sure if I like this story or not, I got a little lazy at the end.
Also I'm romantically in love with Cross if you can't tell with how much torture I put him through
________
Cross wasn't happy.
Far from it actually.
Not that it mattered, he only lived to serve now.
Cross wasn't treated well either.
Not that it bothered him, he deserved it for all he's done.
Every member of The Bad Sanses treated him horribly, or well, mostly.
He has seen kindness through their eyes, mostly directed at someone other than him but on occasion he's seen it towards him.
Nightmare, he was someone that could stand Cross.
Killer seemed not to have an opinion on Cross, maybe that was due to his soul but it made Cross's life a little easier.
Nightmare had touched Cross before, it startled him and he jumped backwards, almost throwing up then and there. That was a time Cross got a look of sympathy - dare he say a look of understanding.
Killer has engaged in conversations with him - that Cross with admit were in fact mostly one way, but he's not to blame for being too scared to speak to someone that if you gave any information to will immediately relay it back to Nightmare, he'd rather just talk to Nightmare if that was how it was.
Dust doesn't speak to him, the best he'll get is a glare or a shove. (Last time Dust shoved him he almost went into panic mode because Dust brushed his stomach and that was one of the especially bad places to touch him, too... Intimate.)
Cross doesn't have an opinion on Dust other than that.
Horror is so nice... to everyone except him, he always feeds him though so he can't be too bad.
Cross has a bad relationship with food, he goes out of his way to hide it though.
Horror clearly wants Cross away, he doesn't know why but will respect it he supposes.
Cross spends his days in the training room or avoiding everyone the best he can in the libraries scattered across the manor, never hiding in the main one because Nightmare spends most of his time there.
He's read hundreds of random books since he's arrived here, it's funny because back in his AU he never had time to realize his passion for books and surprisingly - science.
He's taken to reading books about random scientific ideas trying to explain the unexplainable, it's beginning harder and harder not to add something to that heater to keep it from breaking always.
Cross hates it when the heater breaks.
He recently has been going around and just fixing things if nobody's around, he refuses to anywhere near that kitchen in fear of Horror though.
He has fixed that damn heater about eleven times in the past three weeks, Nightmare has caught onto it by now, he fixes it so quickly that no one usually even notices it's out.
Cross hates the cold, he always can tell when the heater turns off because of even the slightest temperature drop, he's extremely sensitive to it.
Cross isn't the type to complain though.
Not now, not ever.
Which brings us to today, and Cross's newest, but at the same time, oldest problem.
Self harm.
He, per his usual routine, was walking through the halls of Nightmare's manor in his usual defeated way, headed right to the training room to overexert himself some more when he felt the strong urge of pain call to him.
His arms felt a little too cold.
He stopped dead in his tracks as the screeching for a lighter to cross over his bones felt more and more welcoming and kind.
It was so loud that it drowned out even Chara, the demon.
He needed to burn it all.
He turned around, he wouldn't deal with them today, he needs to cut and burn it all out.
And that he does, Cross walks back to his room, the feeling of icy death crawling up his bones again, the heater must have broken.
He'll deal with it later.
When he finally gets to his door, the castle is freezing, a cold Autumn's day upon them. He pushes his door open, not caring for the loud thunk it created as it slammed onto the wall opposite.
He almost falls over at the gust of wind, but that might have been an overstatement.
He closes his door with a slow unsteady hand, collapsing onto the back of the door as it closes. It was so cold, so, so, cold.
He wanted to stab himself right then and there.
Cross crawls to his box of... special things, it consisted of lighters galore, god forbid one stopped working and he didn't have another one. He also had knives of all shapes and sizes, as well as some products for if he went too far and was worried of an infection.
Hydrogen Peroxide, cleaning wipes, the high end stuff that doctors would use, and several bandages and bandaids.
He slips his knife out, pulling up the sleeves of his only protection to the freezing cold outside, he gasps as a breeze hits his bare bone. Staring
at his arm and the many healing wounds and scars, he pressed the knife into it, a sigh of relief escaped his lips, he was so tired; so, so tired of the bullying.
He presses it firmer and drops - little prickles of blood, began to form around the blade.
Cross looks at it and scowls, it's sad he cannot think of a way to handle this that would have him sustain less physical wounds, but he is yet to find something that helps the itch as this does.
He's pathetic.
Disgusting.
And a waste of space.
His father taught him that at least, if anything at all.
Ah, his father, the reason he has this brat Chara whispering insults and the occasional concern, which has been happening quite a little too often for Cross's liking.
The man who abused him through closed doors and behind the prying eyes of society.
The scars on his body - his body not theirs. The scars on his pelvis, not some normal scar that he would've gotten from being in the royal guard.
Purposeful.
Horrible.
Like him, he supposed.
He adds another to the collection.
He wants to vandalize himself, what's the point in not if he's already broken? His father already destroyed what was left of his fragile ego.
Cross suddenly feels the strong urge to burn himself, maybe cauterize his wound, so he takes the lighter and burns.
Tears fell down his face from the pain, he felt perverted in a way, the pain hurt so strangely, so lovely.
Suddenly, he stands up and is immediately hit by an extreme wave of nausea and dizziness. He's freezing cold yet burning hot at the same time, he stumbles.
He falls.
His head hits the corner of his desk and it all turns black.
...
Nightmare wasn't stupid, he knew how the others were treating Cross, yet he felt he couldn't - or more shouldn't interfere. Nightmare was however unaware of Cross's self harm, Nightmare didn't know everything.
He didn't know the extent of the bullying, he didn't know the effect it had on Cross, he didn't even know that Cross was capable of doing the things he does to himself.
But he sure noticed when Cross didn't come down for dinner.
The dinner table was silent, Horror glancing at his empty seat occasionally, Dust glaring at his seat believing Cross was being selfish for wasting such food that Horror poured his intent into making. And Killer? Killer was playing with his food with his fork, per usual. Nightmare knew of Killer's strange way of punishing himself when he knew Nightmare was keeping a close eye on him. He couldn't hurt himself in secret, maybe he could hurt himself plainly out in the open.
"I hate to be the party pooper," Killer says, looking bored. "But our newbie isn't exactly where he's supposed to be right now."
"We noticed." Dust grumbles and Nightmare sighs.
"I suppose someone should check on him." Nightmare says, because surely, that thump earlier was Killer doing something stupid and not him.
"I'll go." Killer says quickly, it was an excuse from the table, and he was nicer to Cross than Dust and Horror.
Again, Nightmare sighs, simply waving Killer off, planning to deal with him later.
Killer skips out of the room, humming a tune that was almost a mix of 'Frosty The Snowman' and 'Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer.' It was that time of year for him already.
The walk through the halls to the living quarters was a long one, not that Killer minded, he liked walking in the halls, they always seemed to twist in a new way each time he walked through them, as long as he had been here for.
When he reached Cross's room, he leaned over and knocked thrice, a smile on his face and deep despair in his soul that he couldn't quite reach.
When Cross didn't even make a noise, the smile fell. He was certainly in his room because that's what Nightmare had said, hadn't he? Killer couldn't remember, but he was almost sure Cross was in there, and he had heard a thump earlier...
"Cross?" Killer yells for him, keeping a light and playful voice despite his confusion. "It's dinnertime!"
Still no noise came from his room.
"I'm going to come in there if you don't answer." Killer says, pressing his ear up against the door to see if he could hear anything at all. Killer sighs when there's no noise, "Fine, I'm coming in!"
He opens the usually locked door, and walks a few paces in before gasping. "Fuck! What the hell happened?!" He says, shock spreading over his face before he rushes to Cross's side. "Cross?!" He yells, shaking him, "Can you hear me?!"
Cross didn't respond and a sinking feeling set deep in Killer's soul, "Jesus, you better not die on us randomly..." He says, frantically looking around for something to stop the bleeding in his head before noticing the box.
"... What the hell is this..." He mumbled, looking through the lighters and knives - all sharpened. He grabs some of the bandages but gives up in untangling them in a second. Then he notices Cross's arms.
"Holy shit..."
...
Everyone at the table was sitting in silence, Dust and Horror were whispering to each other when Nightmare gasps.
"Nightmare...?" Horror mumbles in question.
"Killer is... in extreme distress." He says standing up quickly, "The situation may be more serious than we thought."
"What do you mean?" Dust says, standing up as well.
"I'm not sure," Nightmare sighs, "But Killer is really screwed up over something, I must make sure they're okay."
"We're coming with you." Dust says, Horror standing up next to him with a nod.
"Hurry." Nightmare says, and the three rush out of the room and through the halls to Cross's room.
When they got there they found the door wide open with Killer mumbling a low curse. "Killer?" NIghtmare says, a sense of urgency deep in his voice.
"Fuck- Nightmare get in here!" Killer says, with the same urgency.
Walking in the sight they saw startled them all, Cross was on the floor with a large head wound, his arms covered in blood and healing wounds that seemed to all be cauterized.
"Holy crap..." Dust mumbles and Horror looks on in horror. (Whoops)
"Shit." Nightmare says, before running over to Cross and checking him over. "He's... fine, well, not fine but this isn't fatal if we stop the bleeding now."
Nightmare sighs and picks Cross up bridal style, Cross, who's still out cold, flinches and instinctively leans away from his touch. Suddenly, it hits everyone how fragile Cross is.
He looks so small in Nightmare's grip so... traumatized. Like he went through stuff even they haven't.
Honestly that's what made Dust not like him so much, he had even worse things going on for himself than Dust did. That scared him.
Horror never liked Cross because of him not finishing his food, he thought he must be ungrateful.
"What happened when you got here Killer?" Nightmare asks, trying to keep his composure although he begins to pull Cross closer which provided Cross no comfort and only to start to shake gently.
"He was on the ground just as you found him..." Killer says, his voice betraying his worry, which Nightmare found strange because Killer mostly pulled slightly mean pranks on Cross.
Actually Nightmare found everyone's reaction strange, Horror and Dust seemed to have a resentment of Cross yet they look as if Cross is their close friend.
"I- I did find that there was a box... it had the stuff that Cross had been using to do- do that to himself." He continues.
"Stars..." I grumble, "How didn't I notice, I should have known." I say mostly to myself.
"I'm sure it was our fault." Dust says plainly, he sounded really upset with himself for some reason, maybe it was the fact he made someone else go through the same problem he himself suffers with, maybe it was Papyrus tormenting him about doing it, maybe he was comparing himself to one of the girls in "Mean Girls" that Killer made them all watch.
Cross had laughed several times during that movie, he only laughed at the parts that were supposed to be serious too. Killer looked very proud.
"..." Nightmare can't bring himself to respond, to reassure him of something he doesn't know true. "I.. couldn't tell you. I noticed the bullying but I was unaware of the extent of it that he would bring himself to do this."
Horror suddenly looks ashamed, "I... should have been more open..." He mumbles and Dust puts his hand on his shoulder.
"Don't worry big guy we all should have." Dust says, wincing slightly.
They stay quiet as they bring Cross to the medical room, regret heavy in the air.
...
Slowly, Cross blinks his eyes open, he can't remember how he got in the medical room, he supposes he failed at something again like the stupid monster he is.
That was, until he realized his arms were patched up. "Shit." He mumbles, realizing he's probably going to get punished for not controlling himself and jeopardizing whatever plans Nightmare could have had for him for the day.
"Oh? Cross you're awake." Nightmare says, keeping out the urgency he felt when he spoke. "You had everyone worried."
"Somehow I doubt that." Cross says under his breath but Nightmare can hear him loud and clear.
"I would too if I didn't experience it." Nightmare says with a sigh, "They all looked super remorseful..."
...
To be completely honest Cross didn't expect what happened to happen after this. Everyone began to be so much kinder to him, he expected it to not last but holy shit.
Eventually, Nightmare pulled the truth out of him of what was happening, and more, of his father's abuse of the past and of his... eating problem. Which was relayed to Horror and then Horror was so incredibly nice to him he cried.
Luckily it was only Horror who saw, and gave him the biggest bear hug.
He didn't know that would send Cross into panic mode, the poor guy. Nightmare felt his emotions and whisked him off immediately, having not seen Cross like this before. That's when Cross told Nightmare of his past with his father.
And the start of Nightmare's overprotectiveness.
I suppose that's the story of how Cross became the gang's favorite, and the one they feel they have to protect despite Cross being stronger than most of them.

The Flags in Highschool
♡ characters: Pianoman, Albatross, Doc, Lippmann, Iceman
♡ synopsis: What type of student would each of the Flags be in highschool?
♡ cw: Swearing, Lippmann is nonbinary cry about it, mentions of vapes
note: I have no idea where this came from. I guess my need for Flags content is taking over my brain lmao (I promise I won't only write Stormbringer content from now on I pinky swear) and I know I have tons of stuff still in my inbox from ages ago that you guys requested. I HAVE seen them and I do plan on writing them. At this point in time I'm just sapped dry of any inspiration, so sometimes I just need to get whatever I can. This time around it was flag shit. I apologise for the wait and I love all of you. Apologies for errors and I hope you enjoy x
Pianoman (the prep)
Definitely the leader of whatever student council is at the school he attends (unanimous vote)
He is always on top of his shit. He never gets detention, never turns in any late assignments, never gets into any fights
Has extra supplies for people who've forgotten theirs, from spare pens and pencils to spare tampons for the period-havers
Is the kid that your parents compare you to and say 'why can't you be more like him' (if your parents are anything like mine, anyway)
Helps people study and write notes for exams- he has a collaborative doc that nobody ever needs to edit because the notes are always perfect
Is the one that has to show the new kids around because he makes the student body look really good lmao
Hosts every single event, fundraiser, volunteers a lot
Though he looks like he knows what he's doing he definitely doesn't get enough sleep
So he has a very concerning coffee dependence- probably drugs himself up on caffeine to get through exam weeks (please someone tell him to stop)
He might be generally nice and an academic but he also has blackmail on basically anyone who's ever crossed him so...don't get on his bad side I guess
Albatross (the goofball)
The class clown that everybody loves even though he's a little piece of shit
Definitely bounces from clique to clique, cus he's friends with literally everyone lmao. Even the kids who don't even like him are willing to have him around
Is the reason why Pianoman began bringing spare supplies to school (he fully gets by by just borrowing other people's things)
Never wears his uniform correctly, and is always getting in trouble for it with his teachers, but he never changes anything
He skips classes ALL THE TIME and doesn't bother to hide it. If you have a free period and decide to go to the store for something you'll more than likely find him vaping out the front lol
(Sorry yall he just seems like the type of guy who vapes- I do not endorse the use of e-cigarettes. There now you can't sue me)
Spreads insane rumours about himself because he thinks it's funny, and then acts shocked when people ask him about said rumors
Always has food/snacks in class and teachers are far past trying to stop him from eating while in class
He's so good at P.E. it's kinda scary. He can throw, run, swim, kick...everyone wants him on their team
If there was ever a Matilda-style student uprising...we all know who's leading it lmao
Doc (the weird kid)
Okay when I say weird kid I don't mean 'kid who crosses your name off the list when you're nice to him'
I mean 'kid who sniffs glue and knows too much about WW2'
Doc is absolutely the type to get straight As without putting in even a LICK of effort. He just never studies, and he never helps anyone else study either
A bit of a wallflower, but he's by no means a bad guy. He's just kinda offputting at first
A little bit too enthusiastic about the science classes where he gets to dissect small animal corpses (he's really good at it it's frightening)
Brings his own lunch from home
Always in the nurse's office, he keeps other sick students company (he's exempt from P.E.)
He's like reverse gifted kid burnout- when he was younger he was a late bloomer but now he's one of the smartest kids in the grade
Even though people don't spend time with him they don't wanna get on his bad side because they know he's gonna become some world-renowned doctor after school and they don't wanna deal with that karma. Plus he's a little bit creepy
Nobody knows ANYTHING about his home life
Lippmann (the popular/theatre kid)
You might be thinking that 'popular kid' and 'theatre kid' contradict one another but you'd be surprised. Everyone LOVES this guy
The lead in every single school play regardless of what type of character they are (gender and body type mean nothing to him)
Also lowkey kind of a whore. He's probably dated most of his peers and yet they're all still enamoured with him
Probably has a super high follower count on Instagram (why are highschoolers so obsessed with Insta)
Kinda friends with all the teachers and so people call him a teacher's pet/tryhard (i'm TOOOOTALLY not projecting here)
One of the first kids to come out as queer (nonbinary) so he supports other kids and helps them with their own sexuality/identity
Though he mediates when his classmates fight, he secretly LOVES the drama and lowkey wants to be an enabler (but that would ruin his reputation)
Definitely comes from a rich family and probably helps fund the school- gets a lot of awards for nepotism reasons
Has tons of potential with his academics but never utilises it- he's more comfortable not studying and getting 80% than studying and getting 90%
Gets voted most likely to be famous in the yearbook
Iceman (the scary dog)
He's actually really good at school and gets pretty good grades. How does he do this? You'll never know
Always sits in the back of the class, but he's not bothering anyone back there so teachers don't care. In fact they'd probably rather have him back there because even they're kinda scared of him
Also knows a concerning amount about WW2, but it's less the gory gore stuff and more the war-y war stuff
Surprisingly good at humanities subjects. Never try to get into a political argument with him because he has his sources CITED
Though he's really scary and not many people would willingly approach him, he's actually really nice and gentle
Stands up for kids who get bullied and checks in on them sometimes
Scholarship kid
Likes loitering in the library and reads a lot in his spare time (he has tons of overdue library books to return)
If a bird or a bug or something flies into the classroom he's the one who's always designated to pick it up and gently guide it back outside
Always argues with teachers if they say homophobic/sexist/racist things and gets in trouble for it but doesn't care (a king)
taglist~ ♡ @gettinshiggywithit, @fyodorhatr, @flower-of-darkness, @bejeweledgirl

SLK or Spider/Kiri/Lo'ak Headcanons
idk what these will be about tbh i’m just writing as i think of stuff lmao
Kiri had a phase where she was convinced she was a witch because everywhere she went an animal would just waddle up to her
Spider, Lo’ak and Jake talk to babies like they’re grown people, like no baby talk and it’s hilarious
Lo’ak was once holding a baby, and you know how you hold them high in the air and they’re above you? Yea they were having a moment and then the little creature threw up all over his shirt and started giggling right after
“Dude seriously? we were having a moment wtf” it took everything in him not to just drop the baby
Lo’ak would copy everything Jake did as a kid, his lil mini me fr
Lo’ak’s first words were either dad or Teyam
Spider and Lo’ak both have severe anger issues and lord knows what would happen if they ever turned on eachother abt that anger
Lo'ak is always reprimanded about the things he does, gets yelled at and gets in trouble in situations where he isn't truly at fault. Authority figures never let him explain himself and always assume he's lying or trying to makes excuses and they expect him to just take it and move on. He does, but all that annoyance and anger at a situation he can't help tends to come back up a lot.
With Spider on the other hand, adults can never seem to shut up with their backhanded comments,
"you're nicer than i thought you'd be considering your dad"
"Oh wow you're so smart I didn't think you'd get it'
"You look just like him" (in a bad way)
"Oh you're good at this, who would've thought"
All this stuff and he can't really say anything because he'd be proving them right. So he stays silent, doesn't argue back and boy does he hate it.
One time Neytiri made a comment on the wrong day at the wrong time and he honestly considered violence before he just silently walked out of the room. He definitely punches and breaks stuff but he tries to restrain himself which adds to the pent up anger
They've both used that anger on their bullies, Spider broke the guys nose and dislocated his shoulder by pulling it up his back and making him promise to never show his face again
Lo'ak just went straight to the punches, broke the dudes nose and left him slack jawed
So if you ever catch them in a slightly off mood and you even try to talk to them or act any sort of way, you're getting sent to the nurse. I'm sorry i don't make these rules
Kiri is the mediator, she doesn't want to be but she sometimes ends up being the most rational because when she's upset, anger isn't her default unlike the other two
Lo'ak collects comic books, Jake started the obsession and he went wild. Have a comic or manga you wanna borrow? Vintage or not it's probably in his room somewhere
Spider is a math genius, the formulas are just free balling in his head and it makes it easy for him.
He's also a literature enthusiast but has a hard time expressing his own ideas on paper, great public speaker though
Lo'ak definitely over analyzes his favorite characters, gets sad and cries silently abt it
Kiri is an all around science nerd, she goes to class just because she enjoys helping out w hands on science stuff, most of the content isn't new for her
Kiri despises chemistry, she understands it but finds it uninteresting. Ofc biology and botany are where it’s at
All language nerds
All great at physical education, i mean like the actually science behind the body, they have all the muscle names memorized etc
Kiri is their little jewel, Lo’ak especially, he tries to make it the least obvious but Spider definitely tells her how much Lo’ak cherishes her
Spider is very open with his affections, he just doesn’t feel the need to hide it, they live that loves that about him
Spider and Neteyam know how to cook a mean meal, put them in a kitchen together and you’re literally drooling at the smell
Spider is a spicy food enthusiast right along with Jake and Neytiri
Kiri has had a cat for 4 years, Jake has only known for 2 years because he used to be terrified of them and Kiri didn’t want him to freak out
He now carries said cat like it’s his mini purse
I’m all out
i’ll be delivering some locorro crumbs soon!

My opinions on the sides and their abilities to cook because why not I'm bored:
Patton can cook and bake quite well, he's the type of person who doesn't need recipes most of the time and knows how to make good food. He's tha main cook in the mindscape. Hebakes better than hecooks and ultimately preferrs baking too, but he can and does do both.
Logan can cook but I put 'can' in italics because objectively he can but the moment you take his precise recipe away the kitchen is on fire. If he were to do a technical challange in the bakeoff they'd be carting him off on a stretcher. He also can't bake for the life of him, he has no clue why and it absolutely doesn't make sense
Virgil can cook ifhe absolutely needs to but he has so much anxiety surrounding the oven and the microwave that usually he just puts a poptart in the toaster and says fuck it. At most he'll cook mac and cheese or chicken nuggets and call it a day. This man will not go anywhere near an electric mixer for long enough to touch it let alone bake a cake.
Janus is the best cook in the mindscape, he stress cooks and stress bakes to an extreme to the point that when Janus is stressed the group are basically dining like royalty at a feast. He tends to go all out on making food fancy enough that it wouldn't be out of place in a gourmet resteraunt. However he absolutely refuses to admit any of this. Even when the other sides can clearly see him cooking he'll still deny it.
I left Roman and Remus until last because they are both outright banned from the kitchen. I've mentioned it a few times in fics but neither of them can cook. Roman somehow burned water and set the kitchen on fire somehow whilst making cake batter. He's increadibly accident prone and Patton decided to ban Roman from cooking and cut his losses very quickly. Remus is banned for probably obvious reasons, Remus is actually a surprisingly good cook if you let him try, his food just never looks good. Ever, and it rarely smells edible even if it is somehow good despite that. Even with this though he very ofte makes big messes and likes to use the kitchen for science experiments, thus banned.
And that concludes my headcannon rampage goodnight I'm going to sleep.

perfect! In no particular order;
Querl is a year younger but exactly an inch taller than Lyle, and they both constantly lord these facts over the other. Lyle "I'm older and therefore wiser, so you have to listen to me" Norg vs. Querl "At least I'm not short. How do you even see the lab equipment from down there?" Dox, and its literally only a single number difference.
Lyle has the equivalent of a high school diploma, but neither he nor Querl have an actual doctorate in anything. Neither of them went to college or any other form of higher education. There really wasn't any need for them to
Lyle is the kind of partner to leave post-it notes in random places for Querl to find, and the message on them always varies. It's either something cute like a heart or wishing him a good day, or its a passive aggressive comment about an experiment one of them is working on. This slowly turns into both of them leaving notes for each other.
Both aroace spec.
Both autistic
They both genuinely do math for fun. It baffles and horrifies the others to walk in on them doing white board length equations together just for the hell of it.
Both of them have cold hands, but only Querl has cold feet. When they move in together or share a bed, he will purposefully put his feet on Lyle's leg when he's trying to sleep just to piss him off.
Neither of them like kissing very much except on rare occasions. They prefer hugs or other forms of physicals affection.
They are both are very tactile people but neither like initiating.
Lyle asked Querl out on a date first, and it was a DISASTER. Anything that could go wrong did go wrong, but despite that, Querl still agreed to a second date because anything was great as long as it was Lyle he was doing it with.
Big spoon Lyle. It's the most comfortable for both of them. Querl will occasionally be big spoon after a particularly bad nightmare or something of the sort and he needs to hold Lye to assure himself he is still there, but its not either of their preferred way to sleep.
They have separate blankets, but not because either is a blanket hog. Lyle runs hot while sleeping and Querl runs cold, so they need different blanket thicknesses to sleep comfortably when it's cold.
Querl loves to read textbooks but Lyle finds them incredibly boring. He prefers to read science fiction.
They dont own any pets and never will. Neither of them has the time to take care of one. They do however own a cactus that they can't agree on a name for.
They enter dance competitions regularly. They never win because neither of them is professional levels of good but the experience is something they cherish doing together.
Lyle is the clothes thief among them, though Querl doesn't have very many stealable clothing items. When they start sharing a closet, Querl unintentionally steals Lyle's clothes, but he doesn't go out of his way to do so like Lyle does.
they are both extensive worriers. Neither of them can go on a separate mission without the other being full of anxiety the whole time they are away. This is a product of how many times they've been separated against their will.
they both hate double dates, but don't mind group outings.
they have similar taste in music, but can never agree on a song to listen to in the moment. It always leads to a fight.
Once they've got their own place, they regularly have Luornu and Brande, as well as the Foccarts', over for dinner.
Lyle knew how to cook from a young age as a product of helping Mrs. Foccart prepare dinner, but Brainy was hopeless in the kitchen because he never had a chance or reason to cook for himself. Lyle takes the time to teach him how to cook early in their relationship and now they make meals together without even saying a word.
Querl secretly loves sweets, but Lyle isn't a big fan of them. He prefers salty or savory foods.
#will add more if i think of them#feel free to add your own#brainylyle#brainy/lyle#lyle norg#querl dox#brainiac 5#legion of super heroes#losh#long post#inkytalks

as somebody who hasn’t watched next mutation; how accurate/similar are the turtle’s personalities to previous iterations at that point, if you know?
(anon clarified similar not accurate in another ask, so I'll answer like it said similar)
I would say they're closest to the 90s movies, but to me they are different turtles.
Raphael could most believably be Raph from the movies. Some differences though: he does go out on his own a lot, but unlike in the movies it seems more like something he does for fun than when he is emotionally overwhelmed and needs space. This Raph, when he gets angry, will use mean words more than movie Raph I think. The trouble for him is that he and his siblings also tease each other a lot, often good-natured but you know, mean words. Which means that sometimes his fam won't pick up that he's really mad this time, and other times (more often I think), they assume he's really mad when he's not.
Similarities: loves bikes, pretty chill, pretty gruff, likes to be outside. annoyed with Leo's need to always know where he is
Leo is the most different. From any other Leo really. He's quicker to anger and... well... just a lot more airheaded,, I don't know how else to say it. He tried to use his head to break a stack of bricks. Mikey tried to talk common sense into him. He tried to use the computer that he had watched Donnie use a million times and immediately set it on fire. Donnie apparently beats him every time at tic tac toe and staring contests. He just doesn't have the subtlety that I generally expect from Leonardos. Certainly not the ability to stay calm.
Some similarities: he does take his training very seriously. If he sees something he thinks is cool he wants to learn it. And when he (or his brothers) can't learn something right away he tends to get very frustrated. Another similarity: this boy is so nervous. But it presents so differently, you know? idk 87 and 90s and mirage Leo are all pretty different from each other too. But this Leonardo is just such a different flavor. Meathead Leo is the best I've heard it put. It's still Leonardo but it's in a weird font. I mean a differenter font.
I would say Donnie is between 1987 and 90s movies. He goofs off with Mikey a lot, but his humor is much more deadpan, or else he and Mikey do something together, as opposed to the improv song-and-dance pizza-funeral pork rind comedy routine that the 90s B Team has going. He gets excited about whacky inventions that he made just to prove he could, his energy is just a bit more subdued than 87 lol. This Donnie to me is the most Middle Child Donnie. All Donatellos have this energy, but while some lean more Mad Scientist or Pacifist or Theatre Kid, this one leans Middle Child. He cannot get the front seat (he tries very hard). He can be pretty sneaky, or at least tries to be. He can be a mediator, occasionally we see that, but mich more of a "listen to my genius brain understanding the logic of both arguments" than 90s movies' (more effective) "they're both right, hey look I brought marshmallows." He's very competitive with Venus (new kid) (she has magic) (who's the family doctor now) (who's Raph's soft spot now) (who's Mikey's goofball buddy now) (who's the quiet thoughtful one now) (yeah I'm kind of obsessed with them).
He and Venus do have positive moments too, though, they can be very gentle with each other when they aren't caught up in their ongoing Magic vs Science debate.
Mikey--definitely more similar to 90s than 87 or Mirage. He's the goofball. He loves media (this is the word he uses ajdhsj I think he's mostly talking about radio and tv). He likes weird foods, which I think is a nod to 87, but instead of being pizza-themed this Mikey's foods are fish-themed. Although, sometimes there are some pizzas as well. The way I most see Mirage Mikey is in his friendship with Raph: NM Mikey will always defend Raph and is pretty much always down to go with him when invited. His only possible beef with Raph is when he's not invited (but even then Mikey kinda seems to need to do his own thing too sometimes? Like his shows or his talk show or his recipes. Sometimes he's just in the background of an ep doing his own thing and not really seeming interested in his bros' attention). The way I most see 87 Michelangelo is in his love for animals. NM Mikey is passionate about protecting endangered species specifically, but also just generally has a soft spot for the vulnerable, whether a little critter or an elderly gentleman or a bruised mutant turtle. Actually that probably has a lot to do with why he looks up to Raph ❤️🧡
As a group, compared to earlier iterations, these guys are emotionally immature. They get frustrated with each other easily, argue over petty things, call each other names, and do the opposite of what Splinter asks, usually with Venus protesting. On the flip side though, they forgive and move on pretty quick for the most part. Except some long-term feuds (Leo vs Raph, Donnie vs Venus).
They're also canonically established to be almost eighteen in the first episode, which I think made me see them as even more immature. It's kind of a fun focus, like yeah they grew up completely isolated and their formative years were spent fighting Shredder, it makes sense they are socially and emotionally stunted. 1987 made them do fun teenager things and 90s made them socially awkward, but NM really makes them often painfully immature. Donnie even gives little expository speeches from his psychology textbooks about it. (by no means educational just enough words in there for us as the audience to understand he knows they're messed up and has researched it XD)

A thing I've noticed is that most people who aren't in the biological sciences, and even a lot of people who are have this tendency to think that evolution is much cleaner and more purposeful than it is, for example if an organism has a trait, that trait must be doing something for the organism, and evolution must have selected for that trait, and that trait must be the best possible version of it for that organism's specific circumstances.
In reality of course evolution is very messy, and is the process of adapting what an organism has or can cobble together, to best meet an immediate need. And genes are connected to other genes in weird and wild ways. A fairly well-known example is the fact that floppy ears are connected to a bunch of other genes in canines that are related to domestication, so when we domesticated wolves into dogs, or they domesticated themselves, or however that process worked, floppy ears came along for the ride, even though they have no evolutionary advantage, and even a minor disadvantage.
So there is this post going around Tumblr about zombies, and why humans are afraid of them, and why we are afraid of things that look human but aren't quite human in general, and it goes through people talking about how it might have been because of other human species that were dangerous to us, and maybe this is a response to that danger, and then somebody else went no no it's probably rabies, because rabies is very dangerous and will make you look like a human but suddenly very dangerous to everyone around you, and you might as well already be dead because you will be dead very soon, and you can make other people be dead very soon too.
And yeah I am willing to admit that the human response to other humans that aren't acting right, that just seemed off in that undefinable way, was probably very useful at helping us avoid contagious disease. Though it is important to note here that the original zombie fear, where it came from in folklore, was a fear of being made into a zombie. This fear arose specifically in populations of enslaved Africans and their descendants and it was a fear of a slavery more total than even their current state of subjugation. It wasn't a fear of hordes of undead monsters, it was a fear of being taken over and used, and having your very self violated, of having death be no escape from slavery.
But anyway, I don't think that the uncanny valley arose to protect us from rabies or any other contagious disease, though it may have been a useful trait for that reason. the uncanny valley doesn't just apply to humans, a very popular type of horror monster is like X but not X, like a deer but not a deer, like a dog but not a dog, like a house but not a house, like a room but not a room. Given my last two examples, it's clear that the thing that this is like, doesn't even have to be alive. Somehow I don't think that's to protect us from rabies.
If you want my guess, and I am a lay person and this is a guess of somebody who is moderately interested in the subject, I think it has more to do with the fact that our brains have evolved to become pattern finding, categorizing meat machines, and this has all kinds of benefits to us, keeping us alive, helping us together food helping us find shelter keeping us out of danger etc etc etc. And our brains really really do not like it when it cannot categorize something, when something breaks a pattern, and it can't find a new one to put it into, or find a new box that this thing belongs in. And we feel that attempt and failure to categorize a thing, as The Uncanny. It's less a separate trait, and more a peek into how your brain actually works.
Again, this is a guess from a lay person, but even if I'm not correct in this instance, it really is important to keep in mind that evolution is messy, haphazard, and works only with what it has, and only sometimes is there a neat correlation between a trait and an evolutionary pressure which that trait evolved to fit.

Thoughts on the Ecosystem of the Western Wastes
Does anyone else think too much abt the inaccurate science in the travellers guide (specifically the bestiary). Cuz. They were wrong. This might just be me being obsessed with ecology but there is so much potential with the whole idea of the Everdeads in the Western Wastes but then they hit us with this:
Which is just? not true??
(This is from a free reward on patreon titled "How to Slay Monsters, by Sir Caroline (and the herbalist, I suppose)", you can look it up on patreon to read it in full)
While they do get the spirit of death being the foundation of all ecosystems, they don't seem to understand that this is the case for every ecosystem. Being at the bottom of the food chain is a completely normal and natural thing. That's just the producer level organism in an ecosystem. Grass does not go extinct because it is eaten- it's very existence as a species relies on the curbing of overpopulation, giving of nutrients and spreading of progeny that herbivores provide.
I love the world of Second Citadel, and I love this idea- of death being the sacred thing that supports all life, taken literally. So I want to go through and indulge my "erm, actually" instinct to correct some stuff in here.
The Everdeads are described as dead, but still regenerating. Any cut-off branches or leaves will regenerate, but they apparently don't photosynthesise or take up nutrients, though they provide constant resources to the ecosystem. If the largest flora species doesn't photosynthesize the smaller plants would likely have a higher rate of photorespiration or else the carbon cycle in the Wastes would be pretty weird. (Also, I imagine, since the Everdeads were presumably once alive (?), the trees themselves provide a pretty hefty solid carbon store).
(Putting the rest under the cut, this got long)
Regarding nutrients: the soil in the wastes is described as completely barren, lacking any nutrients. However, there is also described to be a layer of leaf litter and detritus from the Everdeads. This is also soil! Just the top layer. Depending on how long the Everdeads have been around, say a few thousand years, this nutrient rich soil would be maybe ten centimeters deep. Not that much, but still!
As for why there isn't any nutrients, I think this could be for a couple reasons- one is that its just bad land, but the fact that the soil is "resistant to adding any" nutrients implies there's something else. Maybe it was a devestating magical event many centuries ago, or (spoilers) maybe it was another early attack by the humans using anti magical metal which now discourages all life.
It's my headcanon that the Everdeads have roots that can reach deep enough into the inhospitable soil that it can reach some kind of source of magic that it feeds on and uses to provide for the rest of the wastes.
Another interesting note is that "the Everdead population crept east one thousand years ago"- possibly the universe's reaction to the mirrored plains? (I could be wrong about the dates here). Either the universe reacting to the spread of death by spreading "death", or wanting the Everdeads to help heal that area. No idea.
Other fun things: The fact that the primary contribution is detritus means the blooming of saprophytes like microbes and fungi. There's probably lots of mushrooms growing out of Everdeads and in shady places under them, which I think adds to the "fall aesthetic". Insects would likely also thrive in the leaf litter. I imagine Everdeads to be like giant redwood trees. I imagine a similar ecosystem to that as well- smaller shrubs and a few grasses and mosses in more sunny patches, as well as epiphytic ferns and plants growing on the Everdeads themselves.
One other thing is that since prety much all of the Wastes (a pretty big area) has the exact same producer and therefore the same niche, there can't be that much biodiversity. That would only come from things like mountains, water, and climate changes. I assume the Wastes are pretty temperate if not tropical, seeing as there's dinosaurs there, though its unclear how much rainfall there is. I imagine it takes after more barren ecosystem like deserts and tundra, with few species and maybe one or two top predators (the predator here being the T-rex, i imagine). There's also mentioned swinging mice, which are presumably monkeys- probably herbivores feeding on the plants and fruits the Everdeads allow to grow. Maybe the wastes are known to be barren due to the lack of diverse species and not just the fact that cultivated plants can't grow, who knows.
Another headcanon is that Everdeads do not have a latin name because it is impossible to track their lineage as they do not die. We know latin names are a thing in Second Citadel because Sunny Budkin says this:
Though they don't seem to be in common use in the Citadel as we never hear Rilla use any. Possibly a monster thing, possibly something from a lost previous civilisation (Sunny is like 50 thousand years old after all). Everdead seems to be more a state of tree than a species anyway.
Thank you for reading this tangent, I have so many thoughts about the second citadel world. I could also go on about the implications of Arum creating creatures in his swamp and their theories of evolution, though that is explored a bit more in canon (the sweetfrog story is accurate enough, though I could still nitpick one or two things) and I've half drafted an in-universe research paper on the Numb-Cap written by Rilla and Arum. I do love that ecology has something of an important role in SC, seeing my subject represented is nice to see.
If anyone has any additions or corrections I would love to hear them!

An author who write bittersweet endings. Created a puppet so it could be someone better than her. (backfired)
A patient, diligent author who will take any task given to her. But mind you, she still have some limits even if she is an Immortal.
ᵇⁱᵍ ˢⁱˢᵗᵉʳ ᵛⁱᵇᵉˢ
Name: Jiyoon Lockhart (Han Jiyoon/한지윤)
"Jiyoon" 지윤 means "purpose" or "Good Luck" "Han" 한 means "King". "deep sorrow" or "resentment"
Nickname: Author/ Luck, LuckLuck
Other nicknames: Beauté froide/ Cold Beauty, Reine des Arts/ Queen of Arts, Reine des contes et fables/ Queen of tales and fables (Rook), Pufferfish (Floyd), Mushroom Appraiser (Jade), Fine potato (Vil), Author (UiO), Witch, Story/Fable maker (Mitch)
Relatives: UiO (So-called Sister), Miren (Half-brother), Aori (Cousin)
Species: Immortal (was originally a mortal at the age of 18)
A quiet laid-back immortal who enjoys being the one to witness peoples actions, on rare cases, jumping in if she ever sees a reason to do so. She rarely engage in any form of contact often letting her interest or curiosity lead her to new association. She finds inspiration in what little acts the people around her do, observing from afar, or interacting with them.
She is quite a curious soul despite roaming worlds and seeing many fascinating things throughout her journey. She is a responsible person who just wants to rest.
Hobbies: Drawing and Writing
Dorm: Pomefiore
Best Subject: Arts
Club: Science Club
She is free to create and destroy anything, so why not?
Favorite Food: Pastries, Sweet and Spicy
Despite liking spicy, she prefers something that is mix between
Least Favorite Food: Bitter and Unpalatable
Bitter melons? Yes, never show that to her, even if you force her.
Unique (World) Magic: Written Effect
With something to write on and a quill, pen, and ink, she can write anything she wants to happen and create anything out of the paper.
It is possible to use it multiple times on multiple mediums. (notebooks, paper, etcetera.)
Sometimes, her written stories can come true, so careful when you ask her to write you something~
Examples of her power
Sentence: Written Effect (this is her most used)
The incomplete version of her power, works simply as what she says happens. Though as the writer she needs to be in the 3rd perspective, referring her subject as how she sees them (i.e. describe them)
ex; A light guides them to safety, running away, fluttering softly.
Story: Written Effect
A completion of her book allows her to bring it to life, creating a very own universe for the "story" to play through the written words. She can also use it at the existing world, as long it has not happened yet.
Time ahead: Written Effect
works as a prediction as what she writes inside of her book happens in a specific time she wants. Using Time Ahead: Written Effect drains her energy significantly, depending on how heavy the content she wrote and want to happen.
Sacrifice: Written Effect
[DATA EXPUNGED!]
Was used a couple of times before Mitch decided to seal it away.
Original World: A world full of chaos. Now can't go back since the medium, UiO is with them.
Original Worlds Alias: Witch of Creation and Fables, Regressors Companion, Calamity Luck
--Additional Info!--
Jiyoon cannot stand Azul's blabber for contracts... she would very much explode in anger if he continues to advertise near her vicinity...
Writing stories and drawing is one of her stress relieves.
If given any chance, she, will curse Vil Schoenheit proudly... in her language of course. :)
Jiyoon just accepted her fate being followed by Rook Hunt after she confronted him and requested him to stop. Spoilers; he didn't.
Jiyoon and Lilia often talk about the past, sometimes hinting the trauma and talk it out together.
Curses (and poison) does not affect Jiyoon, though it will inflict pain, it will just vanish in an hour or so. Vil's unique magic does not affect her either.
She create paper origamis and paper human to either aid her in her work or put some entertainment.
She is accidentally Jade's (unexpected) friend after she accidentally let out a slip of information about certain mushrooms. (She tried her best to get away and lo and behold, it did not work.)
She is best friends with Kyong Dae and they regard each other as sisters-in-arms.

Some random SpongeBob headcanons for y'all, since I don't know where else to put them, LOL.
Patrick has a collection of various valuable rocks hidden away somewhere in his house. Geodes, crystals, tumbled stones, etc. He loves them all. He has only ever showed his valuable collection to one other person, and that is his best friend SpongeBob.
Patrick and his parents technically all fall under the transgender umbrella (specifically genderfluid), according to science. It is well documented that adult starfish can change their gender in a multitude of ways for a multitude of reasons. One of the main reasons they do this is when environmental factors change, like water temperature and food availability. So, for all we know, Patrick may not have always been a man, and he may not always be a man. Same applies to Herb/Cecil and Margie/Bunny.
The first movie Squidward ever remembered watching was the SpongeBob equivalent of a Busby Berkely film - he was just so enamored with the graceful dancers and their radiant smiles and their gorgeous moves. I'd like to think that it was there he first felt the seed of wanting to be an amazing dancer be planted in all three of his hearts.
Mr. Krabs likes to go stargazing as a hobby. Considering he's a former pirate and navy man, Mr. Krabs more than likely had to use the stars to help his fellow sailors navigate at night. He gained an immense knowledge of the night sky and how it changed throughout the seasons as a result, as well as a lifelong interest and appreciation for it. Nowadays, anytime there's a special astronomical event (like a supermoon or a planetary alignment) or he's simply feeling nostalgic, he'll look out his bedroom window at the top of his anchor home with his telescope and take a look at whatever stars/planets are present. It's an activity that's always made him feel at ease.
Larry is bi-curious. He knows for a fact that he simply loves women in general (no matter the phylum), but men are a far more complicated matter. He does rather like the sight of a well-toned, muscular body on another man, but he can't tell if it's because he's impressed/proud of that man's accomplishment, or if it's something more. He is currently conflicted on whether he's fully straight or is in fact bisexual with an overwhelming preference for women. Whichever one is the case, he'll figure it out when he figures it out.
After the incident with Drizzle, Gale Doppler absolutely cannot eat any food with a cloud-like consistency, namely cotton candy. If he does, his stomach will cramp horribly, and he will violently puke it back out.
Rube Goldfish may not be the best source of information regarding the surface world, but he is astoundingly knowledgeable about life underwater and its history. It would only make sense given that he’s a sea creature himself and he’s amazed by everything, big AND small. He is especially keen on underwater paleontology.
Rube 100% decided to become a tour guide because of all the fun he had with Patrick when he was still a tourist. He felt that if he became one himself, he could bring the same kind of joy and wonder he felt when he was on tour himself.
Sticky Fins Whiting and Dorsal Dan are both LGBT. The former is gay, while the latter is bisexual. They dated for a while, but all that led to was an amicable break-up after realizing that they just weren’t compatible as romantic partners. They still work together amicably as partners in crime though (and as besties).
Sticky Fins’s new partner is Sockeye Sammy. Dan is very much aware of this, and wishes his best friend and his new partner all the happiness in the world.
This is sort of canon anyway if you believe the events that take place in “Krusty Cook-Off”, but I’d like to think that Sticky Fins and Dorsal Dan are of Italian heritage. Both of them are voiced by beloved Italian-American actors (Joe Pantoliano and Steve Buscemi respectively), and they are the main antagonists of the storyline that takes place in the “Pasta La Vista” restaurant in “Krusty Cook-Off”. They even take over the restaurant and start making the pasta themselves after SpongeBob and co. leave for the next place.

There wasn't any formal agreement as to what constituted the beginning of a new day, the proceeding of the next dictated move. After all, one's midnight was the other's seven A.M. Judith had gone to the trouble of preparing a very official looking piece of stationery with the opening gambits annotated. She furrowed her brow again, having pondered the move for the rest of the day, to the point of distraction. But that was the point, wasn't it?
Orders had come through from mission control in Dover. The lab was to play host to experiments in the effects of weightlessness on water. That would have to wait until her coworker was awake. Judith, conflicted about how best to maintain her composure, sent a message asking if their current predicament was any closer to being solved. Then she went back to the leisure room to wait.
The Earth had become her gameboard, border lines hatched in a grid across the colors of her surface while it drifted glacially past the viewport. Judith sighed, repeating the moves in her head, expositing on what could possibly follow.
Fidgeting to oneself was a herculean task in zero gravity. Her foot did not so much tap as it did wriggle in empty air, her fingers able to drum only against her body. At one point, simply to pass the time, she signaled hurry up, Ruth against her forearm, staring at the tube of Sunday roast, pureed for her convenience, that she'd left drifting around the compartment. She was not really in the mood for any food, squirted into her mouth like toothpaste or otherwise.
Ruth did not hurry for Judith, but she eventually made her way out of their sleeping quarters, not looking much different from the day before. Her clothing had changed, at least, her pants and shirt nearly the same dull orange color and clinging to her. She rubbed her eyes, speaking to Judith before she'd even looked her way. "Pawn to G4"
"N… No!" Judith shouted. The composure she'd fought to keep melted away, untrimmed nails digging into the flesh of her palm. "I can't believe you! This entire thing was your idea and that's the move you decide on?"
"Yes." Ruth's voice was flat, disinterested, as though Judith had asked her if sleeping in zero gravity was as uncomfortable last night as it ever was.
"You're really going to open with that?"
"If you think I've opened with a bad move and you don't want the game to end, just don't respond to the poor move."
"Asking me to not respond to your weakness is asking me to not play chess."
"My weakness is that I cannot make a decision that has to be made. Hence why we agreed to this. Just because I agreed to our compromise doesn't mean I'll have the spirit for the game that you will."
"You and I both know you have the spirit for the game. We were tied at forty-eight wins before they sent us up. We are all but evenly matched. All you're doing is putting a responsibility you don't want onto me."
"In the end, it won't really matter, will it?"
"You said you wouldn't let anything happen to me if you can help it. You don't think that…" She trails off, the fight in her voice gone. "I don't want to make that decision either. We'll both go out a very very painful way if you forfeit, which is what that opening suggests."
Ruth heaves a sigh, her arms folded, her nose pointed down, uniquely skyward. "Fine. I understand. For you, only for you, I will do my best. We'll switch, you go first this time."
Judith allows a weary smile, taking a moment to think. It's a wonderful feeling, to have her thoughts wholly occupied with the best strategy, rather than doubt. "Pawn to C4"
"Alright, I'll move my knight to F6. I'm sorry again. But I am curious, did we get any communications from Control?"
"Yes, they'd have us see how water reacts to no gravity."
"We're doomed, not incapable. We've got more time to study space's effects that any who have come before us. If we won't make it back alive, we might as well leave good notes."
"You're right," Judith relents, following her crewmate to the science lab. Ruth stops at the point where the tunnel narrows, reaching her hands out to cradle Judith's face in her hands.
"I'm sorry. We both agreed to it, we did. I just… wanted it done. I wasn't certain I could take the anxiety of not knowing. I didn't want to prepare myself for both possibilities. I didn't want to make peace with one, only to have it be the other. But there will be no peace. We will go down shrieking and wailing, won't we? Either way. Neither will probably even have the guts when the moment comes. But we have to know, don't we? We have to know who'd be the first to fifty."
Judith nods, a tear slipping from her eye, floating free from the edge of the duct rather than going down her face. She sniffles, tries to clear her throat. "I'm glad it's with you, Ruth."
"Me too, Judy."
