THANK YOU for saying something about the cannibalism, dude.....that's always the only way fandom can seem to make dirkjake "deep" is through cannibalism imagery and symbolism when there's nothing in the source material even grazing that. Their relationship didn't work out for extremely vanilla reasons. They had a relationship that was messy in incredibly normal reasons and promptly ended for incredibly normal reasons. They're literally just, like, two 16 year olds who are ass at communicating and one of them just isn't nearly as into the relationship as the other one is. It's a cringe-worthy situation, but, again, in the most normal way possible. Average teenage fumbling.

There just aren't any themes of Consumption to help back up the Cannibalism thing. You kind of... Need... Themes of consumption... To justify Cannibalism within a written work. That is where it comes from. It's consumption at its most extreme. I don't really know where this is all coming from. It's a bit weird to me. Horror is my absolute jam, I'm a Horror Artist/Writer after all, but... There's just no real basis for all this.

A lot of DirkJake fans seem to be Re-Animator fans who haven't realized it yet, to be frank.

1: The character everyone gets wrong

Equius, full stop. You are not a true Equius fan unless you accept his character flaw and don���t try to defend him at every turn. Or, if you hate him and only see his flaws. Yes he’s a creep, yes he deeply cares about his friends, yes he’s classist, yes he’s great moirails with an Olive, yes he sweats when he gets worked up over anything at all, yes he’s hypersexual, yes he’s autistic, yes he built Tavros legs when he really didn’t have to, yes he chose his kinks and ingrained submissiveness to highbloods over his own life and got his moirail killed too, yes he said he’d deal with Gamzee and it ended in nothing (wow, heir of void moment). What about it?

7: What character did you begin to hate not because of canon but because how the fandom acts about them

I love all the characters for their own reasons, so I can’t really say I hate any outright (or for any reason). However, I really get annoyed with peoples’ interpretation of all the Dancestors. It’s ether “uwu they are perfect” or “they are horrible and suck and if you like them, you are awful”. Very few people are normal about them and it makes me not like as much content that depicts them since it feels like nobody gets them

12: The unpopular character that you actually like and why more people should like them

The entire Midnight Crew. Everyone focuses on the trolls and humans and I feel like they get forgotten about. Carapacians are really interesting and all the Midnight Crew members are really likeable characters. They are fun, violent, and cool as hell. My fav is Clubs Duce! But their alternate counterparts are also cool and I feel like people forget about the versions from other sessions besides Jack Noir (Save me Draconian Dignitary, Courtyard Drool, and Hegemonic Brute!)

Unironically nsfw and smut. Since a large part of the HS fandom is made of antis who think if you sexualize any of the characters, regardless of aging them up, then you are a pedophile, it really makes the kinky alien sex smut fics/art lacking in terms of amount. The Alternian trolls having underaged sex is integral to their survival, that’s part of the canon anyway. Like, hs smut and nsfw is so fun to explore since it’s alien emotions and cultural views on sex! It’s my absolute favorite! But so many people are called pedophiles, even if you use the characters who are IN Beyond Canon and are old as shit (they aren’t old as shit, but it’s funny to say it like that lol). Shit makes me upset

Classpecting based on personality instead of just “what class/aspect would thematically look nice”. This is for Classpecting other fictional characters aswell as one’s self. ESPECIALLY one’s self! It’s about personality traits and patterns more than anything else! Players with the same Classes and/or Aspects always have similarities in their personal being! No matter what! Also though, there’s too many knights, princes, and heart players out there and it’s mostly because people kin or have fictives of the Striders imo. Fictive are cool, and are not necessarily included in this. However, I don’t give a fuck if you kin the Striders. There are not this many Knights, Princes, or Heart players! Do your research and find what suit you best! Don’t use the class/aspect quizzes online as you 100% this is what you are! Use them as a base line and for inspiration!

Probably Dirkjake. Not the ship itself, just their canon interactions. I love the ship since it’s tragic and toxic as hell. But based on the way fandom mostly seemed to treat it when I read HS, I thought it was going to be so much more tbh. It was minuscule and you never saw them together, but the majority of the fandom at the time treated their relationship like it was some perfect yaoi and I was tragically misinformed. Thankfully, the Epilogues gave me more substance to work with lmao

Also Aranea as a villain. People make her out to have played a major role in Game Over. No, she died almost immediately. She’s a great character, but she’s not as great of a villain as I’ve seen people try to make her out to be. She made things worse, but everyone probably would have died anyway even without her influence since Vriska wasn’t there to change things

Ok listen I gotta talk about it but it's a bit of a weird AU so I'm not sure it'll be coherent, please bear with me hear.

The premise is this : Earth is covered in a toxic miasma that slowly kills people who breathe it, so everyone wears filtering masks when they go outside, and generally live either underground or in high-security buildings with no windows (can't risk the miasma getting in). But even with all those precautions, the gas can't be avoided completely, so people still die before they reach 40.

Since humanity is in a bit of a crisis, everyone lives in Settlements (capital S) run by the government. Kids grow up in the highest security buildings until they naturally develop an Ability (capital A, basically just classpect powers) at around 20, where they'll finally be considered adults. Depending on their Ability, they'll be sent to other Settlements and assigned jobs based on them. It's a highly-efficient but also merciless society, and not everyone is happy with it.

Add to that regular attacks by trolls (oh yeah, they're here too, btw) on important Settlements, and it's not a very fun world to live in, but people make do.

Dirk just turned 20, along with Roxy, and they both manifested their Abilities. Roxy is to be sent to another Settlement, because her ability to create things out of nothing is very valuable, but Dirk doesn't want their family to be separated and fights against it. She's sent there anyway, and Dirk is assigned the task of going on an exploratory mission to try and find a way to go to other continents by sea. But electromagnetic storms are all over the ocean, and Dirk knows it's just a convenient suicide mission to get rid of any problematic members of society.

As expected, the boat is caught in a storm, and Dirk ends up on an island, unconscious, hurt, and with no mask. The island turns out to be Jake and Jade's, and is surrounded on all sides by electromagnetic fields that actually keep the toxic gas out, so it's the only place on earth with a normal atmosphere, though signals are jammed and leaving is nigh impossible. The reason Dirk managed to land there was because Feferi, who lives in caves under the island with Eridan and knows the perfect route between the storms, brought him there. Jake then found him on the shore and nursed him back to health along with Grandma and Jade.

Oh, and cloning is a thing, and very common. Dirk is a clone of Beta Bro, Jake is a clone of Grandpa, Grandma is a clone of Jade (yes, in that order, there's a reason for it), etc etc.

The DirkJake will probably be slowburn, and most of the fic will be gen with a dose of "will-they-won't-they" thrown in for flavor.

(Also I'm making Dirk, Roxy, and the Jades trans and nobody can stop me)

There's a lot more going on to this AU but I'd like to at least keep some of it a secret so I don't spoil everything once I write the actual fic, but that's the gist of it (I say as if I didn't just dump multiple paragraphs on y'all). :')

What are your Thots on jake’s pq route?

I already wrote some about it in this post where I discuss the problem with taking dirkjake as a literal parallel to tavris (Mainly, that it’s inaccurate to both situations and misrepresents the dynamics at play) but it’s been long enough since release that I feel like I can talk about it without that criticism being taken as a personal witch hunt. TL;DR: As a general rule of thumb I don’t cite Jake’s PQ as part of his characterization, and I think basing your Jakewriting on it will only lead you astray.

I liked a lot of the Pesterquest routes and the alphas were among some of my favorites, but I think when you play the four of them in sequence Jake’s really... stands as the odd one out. It’s almost as if he’s afforded way less sympathy from the get go for some indiscernible reason, or like MSPAR took a day to say ‘I can’t stand this kid in particular’ after dealing with waaaaaaaay more mindboggling troll customs or stupid dangerous situations that tested their patience and their limits. When it comes down to it, it’s mostly an issue of framing.

Let’s go with the “Just the Alpha routes” example, because I think that makes the overall context clearer and the response/reactions it gathered (or the lack thereof) easier to understand. The alpha kids were the last 4 Pesterquest episodes. They were also afforded entire volumes just for themselves, which cemented our expectations on “oh, they’re going to really dig into unexplored territory!” and for the most part, that’s what we got! It was really nice to see the internal mechanics of Jane as someone raised within a corporate echochamber, Roxy as a grieving, isolated kid, deprived of all human contact, and Dirk as a nerdy doomsday prepper haunted by private flashes of himself as a supervillain. It all works! Those are things the alpha kids were dealing with on the background of the broader Homestuck story, things we were only hinted at as the *larger* problems played out. It makes you understand their point of view. Except on Jake's route, where nothing about his life seems to be relevant at all? 

With Jane we get discussions about HIC and her family, with Roxy beautiful passages about a mother they never met and growing up alone— Same for Dirk, who gets a whole brother zapped from an alternate timeline. But on Jake's route there's not even an expansive dialogue path dedicated to Grandma English, Skaianet, the rebellion, or the giant red ship that came and murdered her in the night and then bombed his house, leaving him trapped inside his only surviving tower. No understanding passage realizing that this kid has had to fend for himself in an island full of Actual Giant Alien Monsters trying to eat him alive, or that he cremated his guardian specifically to avoid attracting predators to the scent of fresh blood drying on her mutilated corpse at the age of an actual toddler. The text refuses to dig into any of the psychological implications or impact an environment like this could have on a kid, which is even weirder when you consider MSPAR has met and helped Vriska get out of a similar situation. The whole thing with Jane in the previous volume has just happened, even, while Jake's particularities go unremarked. He was just supposed to deal with it. And that's because a choice was made to portray all of Jake's problems in this route as sort of... single handedly Dirk's fault? Something he should have Just Dealt with?

There's not even a hint that Jake knows Hal exists. Which is important! Jake can pick out Hal from Dirk based on *verbal cues*, and the fact that he considers Hal a barrier between him and his "real friend" getting to communicate with one another is a whole point of contention (and even comedy) in the story proper. Instead of examining Jake's isolation, or grief, or how he literally locks himself in his room and plasters it with cinematic posters to pretend he's just the main lead of a wacky adventure movie in the face of the immense shitshow outside, we get brobot acting nonsensically and threatening to break into Jake's room to beat him up. 

A general reminder on brobot: He was programmed to scout the jungle and deal with predators so Jake could a) Be allowed to safely leave his room (something he simply didn't do before age 13 out of sheer terror, and we know this because dirk and jake talk about it on his birthday conversation, when he first gets brobot) and 

b) Learn how to defend himself in the case of a surprise attack, with different combat settings adjusted to his level. The brobot has a novice mode Jake feels patronized by, but pushes him up levels quickly enough. In Homestuck proper, the brobot only enters "stalking mode" after Hal gets pissy with Jake for finding him out, and forcefully switches the setting on to make Jake work for the Uranium inside it. When you take Hal out of the picture, this plotline makes no sense! Jake's route is set way before the Alphas even think of entering the game, so this particular event hasn't even happened. Jake goes on to text Roxy and she turns the stalking setting off remotely anyways, so even if brobot was programmed to murder Jake in his sleep, or jump him inside the safe zone of his room (he's not) he has literally no reason to be acting like that when he's been set to Baby Buff Up Mode.

(Brobot does end up spontaneously pulling himself apart to give Jake his reward after this)

Which brings me to my other problem with the general framing of this volume; the alpha kids don't feel present in Jake's life as friends at all. It's all "romantic options" and "shipping discourse" and MSPAR making these silly logic jumps to justify insisting on this line of query, and all it does is completely flatten out anything of interest having to do with Jake as a Person, to build up an image of Dirk as being suspicious and shady for his volume and more or less come to the conclusion that Jake sucks because he just Cant Choose Who To Date Between All His Friends! And that's why jake is just like tavros… and dirk is just like vriska! Or something. 

And just as a reminder, here's Jake talking with Roxy so I don't have to explain why that feels like a weird choice to me. (click to zoom)

And then there's the endings. On the vriska ending, MSPAR just ends up weirdly angry at jake for being such a piss baby and not getting that he's tavros and dirk is vriska so he had to��� uh… take all his anger out on this 13 year old alien girl he has never met and teach her a lesson to prepare to do the same on dirk, or something. And on the other ending Jake mentions his pen pal, is zapped to meet jade, they have some non-committal greetings and then a cosplay party where Jake insists that he totally likes Lara croft not because she's a femme fatale and he relates to that, because he's never ever in his life thought of anyone being interested on him. Or Something. He likes Lara croft for normal reasons only. He wears really tiny shorts and does sexy poses because he's not aware at all of how other people find him attractive. He's just too dumb to get this, or the shipping thing, or that he's tavros and Dirk is vriska (who the hell are these people?).

Jake feels like an afterthought in the grand scope of events. Sidelined on his own episode. This volume is busy with rehashing age old fandom arguments that have little to do with his character, because said arguments were started and maintained by bored teens engrossed on fighting online instead of analyzing Homestuck; we introduce vriska for no interesting reason at all (thank god at least Jake has enough decency to say he's not into hitting on 13-year-olds, because that would have been particularly rancid.) And aside from catchphrases and old slang sprinkled liberally into his dialogue like a fog making machine, none of the motivation for the character is there. What does he want? What does he fear? Why does he act like the way he does? What would accommodating him look like? What would helping him look like? We get this on Jane's volume, Roxy's volume, and Dirk's volume. To really heart-wrenching and dramatic results, too. You get to know who they are, where they live, what they want, what they fear, what might help them get better, but Jake is just sort of There. He's a burden. MSPAR either ends this volume berating him for not doing what they want or finding him weird and confusing and like they don't know each other at all, and the fact both of those were marked as dubiously bad ends in the game files speaks for itself, I think.

Why is jakejane abusive?

oh my god okay here we go. before we start, i just want everyone to know that i’m not trying to demonize jane here, i’m stating her abusive behaviors towards jake in canon. this will be the very last of what i post about shipping issues on this blog, and i will be updating the FAQ.

okay well for one, jane has some serious issues. i wouldn’t even pin her to be ready to be in a RELATIONSHIP, let alone one with jake.

jake is a nice, kind boy, who does nothing but support jane wholeheartedly from the very beginning. he cheers her on, has fun, goofy chats with her, everything you’d normally expect the kid to do.

jake is incredibly smart and cunning, he is able to bend situations to his own advantage at times. however, he’s an autistic-coded character, meaning he doesn’t pick up on social cues very well.

there’s a lot of debate whether or not jake purposely messed with jane during the birthday scene, and to be extremely honest, it’s definitely a little bit of both -

( dirkjake ment here - ) jake was definitely in love with dirk. after years of dancing around and flirting with the boy, he saw his chance and wanted to take it. jake was well aware of jane’s affinity for him, but the problem is, he knew he would be unhappy with dating her, but he couldn’t say no.

he most definitely messed with jane so that she’d stutter and mess up at asking him out, because that was all he knew how to do. but at the same time, she completely flipped the barrel on jake and overreacted towards him, told him to “STFU BUSTER!!!!!!”, etc etc.

however, jake definitely couldn’t pick up the cue that he was upsetting jane. he had no idea when to draw the line and disconnect. he was trying to go through with the course of action where she’d just forget what she wanted to ask so dirk would ask him out first. it wasn’t until she genuinely snapped at him that he took the hint that she didn’t want to talk to him.

during the trickster stuff, jane literally tracked jake down and tried to turn him trickster. jake’s first reaction is to want to escape from her, and run far away. he was scared of jane and what had become of her.

jake wasn’t in his right mind, and agreed to marry jane and have kids with her. see, the thing is, most of the things jake said here weren’t true, and it was the trickster talking.

however, during the crockertier stuff, jane holds him accountable for everything he said during it. she stands there and acclaims she’s going to marry him, how she’s going to keep him to herself, how she’s going to literally rape him and have his children, e.t.c.. she even literally tells jake that he’s not allowed to dress, that he’s just a receptacle for her pleasure, that he’s basically going to have all his rights and freedom taken from him. she says that she doesn’t love him, that she hates him, that she would literally kill him and feed his body to her kids if she could.

so many people excuse her behavior with “WELL SHE WAS CONTROLLED BY CONDY!”, but the thing is, condy doesn’t know jake to my knowledge. if anything, she’d literally just have killed jake and move on. most of this is jane talking, there’s literally no way out of it.

she stands there and she tells him everything he hates and fears about himself is true, that people only love him for his body.

in [S] GAME OVER, jake is literally seen taking a sword to the chest for her, because despite everything she did to him, he still cares about her. she suffocated him with insults, drowned him in everything he didn’t like about himself, and he still took the fall for her.

and after it all?

she didn’t apologize. jake apologizes to her.

jane really believes that she gets a FREE PASS for everything she said and did to him because of condy.

moving on from that, let’s take a look at jake’s relationship with jane here on the wiki.

“adopted second cousin”. jane may not be related to jake by blood, but she is his second cousin. shipping adopted siblings/family members is incestual.

“possible love interest (pre-trickster)”. jake knew jane had a crush on him. if she had asked him out, he would have said yes, because he can’t say no to someone. jake wants jane to be happy - he’s genuinely willing to sacrifice his freedom to be her boyfriend because he can’t tell her no.

“co-fiancee (trickster mode)”. see this, here? jake said he would marry jane, but he also said he’d marry roxy. he also wanted to marry dirk. jake literally wanted to marry all his friends, because of being trickster. it’s absolutely no form of consent or commitment.

TL;DR: anon, jakejane is abusive because jane felt no (visible) remorse for her actions towards jake, she treated him horribly and still got a free pass for it because “she was being controlled”.

I hope you and other people read this to the end. It’s important. We’re going to go step by step here. First off, you’ll have to forgive me for being a bit over the top and angry. Sunny is a close friend of mine, so I’m sure you can understand why I’d get emotional when people not only spread unjustified hate but also celebrate it. I’m sure if someone did the same to one of your friends, you’d feel the same way.

She’s lowkey homophobic. She doesn’t show it much but she’s basically a yaoi fangirl who sexualizes mlm couples

If you think Sunny is a “yaoi fangirl”/fujoshi, you really don’t know what you’re talking about. Have you seen works that actually do fetishize mlm relationships or sexualize them in a harmful way? The insistence of the seme/uke dynamic and using mlm smut as a means to their expressing their non-mlm sexuality are hallmarks of that. And those kinds of tones/qualities aren’t really found across her works. Yes, she ships DirkJake. Yes, she even sexualizes it. No, that does not make inherently bad. She’s not showing it in an unhealthy way nor is she claiming ownership of it. 

and she INSISTS dirkj*ke wasn’t abusive so a bunch of people blindly agree because for some God forsaken reason they think her art is in character and canon.

DirkJake being abusive is a FANON interpretation. Sure, there are some qualities of it, but at the end of the day, it’s a webcomic in which we didn’t get to directly see any of their relationship. We are just told about it through the monologues of Dirk and Jake. Was it abusive? Maybe! It’s perfectly fine if you see it that way. But it’s not CANON LAW. 

Also insisting that people are simply agreeing because they blindly follow her is just ignorant to other peoples’ own opinions on autonomy. Guess what? Other people have different opinions than you. Scary, I know! But that’s life. Shipping DirkJake or thinking it wasn’t horribly abusive isn’t wrong.

Her treatment of roxy was BEYOND awful. She makes her nothing more than a ditsy drunk who likes cats and helps Dirk get laid. Despite her struggle with her feelings for him, but that would get in the way of Hot Yaois.

So Roxy is a recovering alcoholic. Is depicting her drinking alcohol wrong? This is a really interesting question, and is one I don’t have a straight answer to. But again, in regards to the other stuff, this is coming down to how you are policing how other people interpret and draw characters. Attacking someone for depicting Roxy as “liking cats and helping Dirk get laid” is uncalled for. Literally no one is being harmed by someone doing that. You don’t get to decide what is  and isn’t okay when drawing a FICTIONAL character.

Evey character is a 2D stereotype of themselves, and again, people TAKE IT AS CANON. This horrible mischaracterizing is definitely something that hurts the fanbase. Also, I’m not gonna rip on her art style but she only draws characters as skinny white people or skinny white people with a tan. She may give Jane bigger boobs and a bigger butt so she’s the “acceptable” type of fat. If she draws a POC they still have white features. All trolls “just 12 white people colored gray”.

People taking it as canon is not her fault. Hussie draws all the characters LITERALLY as skinny 2D stereotypes of themselves. And Hussie’s drawings are UNIVERSALLY CANON. Does that make it not okay to draw characters with different bodytypes/skin colors/etc.? Of course not.

And again you’re policing how people draw characters. Drawing characters with less common body types or as POC is great! But that doesn’t mean drawing them any other way is bad or wrong. We can discuss to what extent it’s harmful, but at the end of the day, you’re saying all these things because you think Sunny doesn’t draw people fat enough or POC enough. You’re inciting hate because she’s drawing a fictional alien race in a way that you don’t agree with. 

And the worst part, is how the homestuck store is monopolized by her. If you want diverse designs you’re out of luck! Here’s more Ikimaru!!

All this stuff combined is a huge drag on the homestuck community in the long run because she’s so goddamn influential and everyone thinks her POV is Canon

The WLF store being largely populated by her works was and is not her decision. She signed a contract with WLF a while ago. They ask her to draw things, and then she draws them. She’s not willy nilly deciding to deciding to flood WLF with unsolicited submissions. In fact, outside of WLF, she hardly even draws or wants to draw Homestuck anymore. 

As I’ve told other people in the past, your frustration here is totally justified. It’s understandable that you want to see different things in the store and that it angers you when all you see is art that you don’t like. However, Sunny is not the person you should be hating for this. That’s all on WLF’s end, and believe me, I will not get upset if people go around criticizing WLF.

But again, other people thinking her POV is canon isn’t her fault. She’s never claimed that how she draws characters is the canon or correct way. Sure, she has a HUGE following in the fandom, but that’s just what it is: a following. People follow her because they enjoy her art and interpretations. She’s drawing fanart. She isn’t creating what is suppose the be the correct image of the characters.

Yes, she’s my friend, but I’m not going to say people have to like her or her art. You don’t have to agree with her opinions; I know I don’t, and she knows that.

I think people are honestly giving her too much credit. I’ve seen this kind of thing happen on Tumblr dozens of times before. People hold Sunny to these unreasonable standards. People put her on a pedestal like she’s the CANON FANARTIST. And when she does things that people deem wrong or harmful, it creates that much worse of a reaction and backlash.

But there’s something you and everyone else has to remember, especially when saying shitty things about someone publicly. Sunny is just a normal person. She’s human. She has here own emotions, ambitions, problems, and causes for anxiety (which I might add is pretty much 100% from people like you). You shouldn’t hold her to this ridiculous standard just because she’s popular in one niche fandom on Tumblr. You don’t know her. You do not get to make sweeping judgments based on a couple of self indulgent drawings she’s posted over the past 5 years. 

That brings me to the most important part of this. A lot of the discourse near the top about interpretations of characters is something that isn’t 100% black and white. I could be wrong about those things. But even if I am, that does not justify inciting hate or encouraging people to write horrible things like “I’ll kill her,” even in jest. SHE’S A REAL PERSON. Posting that kind of stuff publicly is NOT OKAY. That is not how you act online or in the real world. I know Sunny has been deeply affected and truly hurt by seeing things like this. The worst part is that this kind of witchhunt fandom policing is still going on after multiple instances where it caused someone to attempt suicide. Why is this still going on? This kind of behavior is unacceptable and needs to stop.

Imagine the post-retcon trip, Karkat figures out what’s going on first because of course he does, and as much as he wants to resist this shit because his first crush on a human went over so fucking badly he just can’t help himself. We know Karkat is a pretty decent flirt from at least one red flirting convo with terezi and (arguably) one black flirting convo with sollux, but the thing is, Dave has no fucking clue how to process flirting let alone mercurial multi-quadrant troll flirting, and it all just kind of generally registers to him as “attention directed specifically at me that doesn’t make me feel awful, cultivate at all costs.” 

So for awhile they have this situation of Karkat just kind of spastically unloading confused teenage romantic notions at him, but Dave has no fucking idea that’s what’s going on, he’s just like. Red flirting? really bro are we playing gay chicken right now? that was a pretty overall not entirely heterosexual thing you just said. god damn man it’s like you’re writing a character in one of your books only the character is a teenager who is also written by a teenager, you need a beta reader for that dialogue bro??? I flirt with you incessantly for like half a fucking sweep and get nothing but vague smirking nonanswers and now that I’ve actually considered maybe I should just give up you start with this??????

and dave is just like whoa back the fuck up who was flirting with who and when please point out the flirting because you have never once flirted with me. and karkat painstakingly points out all the various things that have counted as troll flirting with his romantic lecturer voice on because that’s the only way he’s getting through this alive. and dave is just dumbfounded and karkat is like well???? 

dave has no idea what to say or how to process this information or what he thinks or how he feels and he just opens his mouth intending to say something at least vaguely positive – he thinks – probably – and instead he’s just like, man, karkat, holy shit, that’s the gayest thing just about anyone has ever said? 

Karkat’s face takes on this thunderous expression. dave absolutely cannot stop himself. This is a plinth jutting impudently outward in crudely phallic glory from a veritable ocean of bro on bro feelings sauce. a juggernaut of homosexuality that lesser vessels can only gaze jealously on in existential despair. this is as close as any living creature will get to achieving rose lalonde levels of purestrain gay.

ten thousand years later they will joke about how it’s really pretty lucky that karkat was able to resist the urge to murder him then and there because it probably would have been just as FUCK 

but at the time all that happens is karkat refuses to talk to him for a few days until dave sheepishly sits with his back at his door rambling in nervous stilted dialogue about how difficult it is to say what he really thinks and how much he wishes he could be more like karkat in that respect and how he really hopes that even if karkat doesn’t like, LIKE him like him anymore after that stunt he can at least maybe still platonically like him because the thought of not being friends anymore at all is sitting on the scale of terror squarely between “jack catches us and kills us all” and “jack doesn’t catch us and kill us all and I have to interact with the teen version of the dude who I’m pretty sure actually fucked me up in some intangible fashion, not that that’s an excuse or anything” 

and karkat sticks his head out and his brows are all crinkled and he’s like god damn it are you human gay or not what the fuck am I supposed to do with this??? and dave is like UHHH NOT EXACTLY I mean I don’t exclusively like guys or anything I’m pretty sure I’m still into girls just like not any girls present at this moment but uhhhh and karkat is just like

*sighs* okay maybe i will talk about it.brain ghost dirk is only able to exist because of how dirk and jake’s aspects interact with each other. jake can create anything simply by believing in it and dirk by definition has a multitude of other selves. brain ghost dirk is a dirk splinter, created on accident from jake’s mind. he’s a pretty perfect recreation of dirk but he might be a little harder on him than normal (a little like hal, but less antagonistic).

any interactions jake and bgd have are probably as close as we get to actually seeing dirkjake have an onscreen conversation in homestuck (they never actually have a one on one convo in canon. its all through dirks other selves but not Actually Dirk) just because of how faithful a recreation bgd is. since he’s actually part of jake, bgd often communicates with jake while discussing internalized feelings that jake has and won’t admit to himself/move forward on. this is because jake is a disaster of a person and finds it easier to have his feelings pre-chewed by a “not him” part of his brain and then presented to him so that he can (usually) still deny it. its totally normal to put your thoughts through your best friends mind and see what he would think of it dude. thats so normal of you.

brain ghost dirk is a dirk splinter that dirk is not aware of and has no direct control over. brain ghost dirk is, effectively, a Jake who is also a Dirk. gee man i sure hope this has nothing to do with how their biggest relationship problem is communication...! /s. Um but yeah he isnt Dirk. he is his own character just like hal and bro are. be nice to him
