Doctor Who: The Jodie Review
(Long post)
(Sorry)
Introduction
I decided, still being locked down, to watch some Doctor Who.
Hadn’t watched it in a while, told myself I’d always catch up when I had the time, and the universe decided to give me a lot of it.
I had stopped watching Matt quite some time ago, but caught up about 4 years ago to Capaldi’s first season. I had meant to carry on with it but slow-going times and I forgot and all the other jazz that fills in the space between not doing things.
But I thought I’d storm through them and get them over with. I had heard bad things going onwards, but hey, I’m one of those sad losers that LIKE Love and Monsters. It’s not great but I thought what it did well, it did great.
So, off I went to finally catch up on a show that formulated so much of my younger self, my love for time-travel, interesting sci-fi that ended up getting me into the genre, and a love for character interactions and lore.
I went through Capaldi, and his last two seasons, yeah, they had an odd episode here and there, Sleep No More is a disaster, but I carried on through. I’m a trooper, I got through Fear Her after all.
But I fell in love with the Doctor again. Heaven Sent is easily the best DW has offered so far, the character building with him and Clara and Bill and hell, Nardole, are superb. The stories were interesting, the Doctor was great and evolved, and the companions were the perfect fit for Capaldi.
And then, after a brilliant goodbye, he was gone.
“Be kind.“
And here we go, we’re with Jodie, she’s northern, she’s confused, and she’s in need of some pockets, falling through the sky, yeah, 200 degrees that’s why they call her missus fahrenheit-
Not Jodie, but Chibnall
I’m not going to drag this out too far, I ain’t gonna make you read this for ages just to see if I like it. If you don’t want to see me complain about two seasons, this is your point to head out.
I think these are the lowest series of Modern Doctor Who.
But like the title says, it’s not Jodie’s fault. She’s an amazing actress, and she plays the part well. Hell, so does Bradley, Tosin and Mandip. Each one of them is a good actor and when the scene calls for them, they pull it off well.
The issue here is the writing.
And I feel I should go through why I think that.
But first, I think I should point out the good.
The Good: On historical topics and representation
This is the most diverse Doctor Who has been in a while. It was pretty diverse before mind you, let’s not forget the Doctor seems a bit flexible, the companions have been a mix of sexualities, gender, age and race, and each one of them is loved by many. Hell, Jack Harkness was so popular he got his own tv show.
But Thirteenth has gone and made sure that there was more.
Characters just pointing out they’re gay and it’s just a matter of fact. It’s a statement, not an argument, not being out there or subvertive, it just is. People are more than fine with this.
I’m surprised Graham the bus driver is so accepting of everyone at the start, but it speaks testament to his character. He fell in love with Grace, he raised a son with a disability, he stands up for those that dare have a go at any of that. Graham didn’t have to grow to learn this in the Tardis, he was accepting from the get-go.
Well, there’s some conflict about Ryan blaming things on Dyspraxia in the first episode but it comes out of a place of fear of their lives. But any tensions between them are resolved quite well, to the point they can count on each other.
Either way, representation is important and Jodie’s season has it in spades.
As for historical topics, the Doctor tackles them quite well. Honestly, the episodes in the past are her strong suit. And as she’s a woman now, she has a new battle against her. History wasn’t always kind, and the gag of them addressing Graham each time is a genuinely good idea.
Also, Rosa had the opportunity to be butchered. It could have been written badly, it could have been handled with hardly any care, but it was the standout episode of the season. Each character gets some good lines, the gang has to face moral decisions and it’s a genuinely good look into a past that America would sometimes like to forget.
As an aside, I think Bill, even as one character, explored the sexuality thing more and the diversity she faced from it, I think thirteenth doesn’t do a bad job. I liked the astronauts as shown above quite a bit to be fair.
Graham
The standout star of the show.
This will be unfortunately brought up in my negatives for the show too, but this is the good side.
Graham’s lost his wife, he has to connect to her grandson, his cancer is a constant worry in his head and he comes with the Doctor in an attempt to escape/confront all three.
He is the one who evolves the most as a character in the first season, coming to terms with the death of Grace is something he battles with throughout, he still blames himself. For whatever reason, even in the Rosa Parks episode, he gets the most emotional writing. Ryan and Yaz do get good writing in the same episode mind you, (which is unfortunately one of the few times Yaz does) but it’s heartbreaking to see Graham realise what he has to do.
The Acting
I unfortunately have to put Ryan, Yaz and the Doctor here in one group category. and I hate to do that, but I feel it’d be a disservice not to mention them.
Their actors can act well. When the script calls for it, they do amazing work.
The scene where Jodie is angry and confused at the other Doctor, where Ryan is actually there to support his friend, when Yaz is comforting Ryan about America, where Jodie is fucking pissed at the Master, all good scenes.
But this is a perfect segway into -
The Bad: Asides the retcon
Holy shit where do I start.
I mean, we’ve got the good out of the way, so you know where I stand on the issues a bunch of people wrong accused the show of being. A female doctor is more than fine, the diverse cast is great, the topics of exploring the past is done good.
And I’m not going into the retcon just yet, I feel like going ITS BAD BECAUSE OF THIS ignores so much of the problems to be had
But let’s start with
The Doctor
This should have been her outfit just saying
I find the best way of describing most of this doctors run so far is...
Imagine, if you will, that you need to write a Doctor Who book. They’ve given you a plot to go with, but they haven’t told you which Doctor it’s for. But tight schedules and they still haven’t told you, so you write up a draft. A template. But you leave the Doctor’s text ambiguous. A template for a Doctor. With some work, you could make it the 12th, the 5th, the 1st, once you add mannerisms and how the doctor would react personally in a situation. So you write in this template Doctor and go to sleep. But you wake up and your assistant has only gone and submitted it.
The Doctor is kinder than any other iteration of her Doctor, but that’s it. I get why the natural progression from Capaldi, and Jodie sells a nice Doctor superbly, but ...
There’s nothing really there to distinguish her as her own Doctor. She’s nice, a bit confused, LOVES things and calls people fam.
But like, that’s it. Where the 9th had coldness, 10 had eccentric, 11 had old man and 12 was furious, Jodie has... nice. But a Doctor needs an edge.
She’s quiet about her home life and she doesn’t really talk much to her companions about it, but like, that’s understandable, she doesn’t really talk one on one to them or even much about their home lives.
She doesn’t get an arc until Spyfall, and even then it’s largely just turned into “She’s well moody”, and apparently well moody is just being kinda quiet. Jodie says it right when she shouts at them in one scene “You don’t know me!”
And she’s right, but then the companions trust her with everything and they’re part of a FAM and super close but they don’t really talk with each other. Jodie doesn’t have these quiet talks like the other Doctors would have with the companions, it’s just... not there.
And because it’s not there we’re supposed to believe they think of themselves as a tightly knit group but also very apart as characters. And the companions, to their credit, try and confront her on it, but the conflict is over so quick as to not be there at all.
Yaz and Ryan
This is the best scene of them in, and one of the rare times Yaz makes an impact on a story which isn’t just supporting the Doctor
What they did to these two actors is cruel.
Ryan at least gets to join in on Grahams arc, because it is Grahams arc, not Ryans, really. There’s a plot about his Dad that’s done quite well, so that’s why Ryan doesn’t suffer the same poor fate as Yaz does.
Yaz has absolutely no agency. She wants to be a successful Policewoman but it’s not really much addressed outside of the first episode and the dream episode (which admittedly, is a good episode and explores each character). She gets told by everyone she’s the heart of the team and super brave and like, she hasn’t got an arc, she pretty much blindly follows the Doctor, she has no reason to be there much other than her family’s a bit annoying.
Her actress plays the scenes well, and there’s some touching moments with her in Rosa and the dream episode about how she is the way she is, why she does the things she does. But 2 episodes out of 20 isn’t enough.
Ryan gets a couple of good episodes, a touching one especially comes with horrors of the future and not being there for his friends plaguing his mind, and he manages to get help for his depressed friend, which is touching.
But the two episodes? That’s kind of it.
Ryan gets a nice Dalek episode though.
Orphan 55
The worst episode in Doctor Who. Took any good faith from Spyfall and plonked S12 in bottom tier before we even got to the retcon.
If I talked about everything it did wrong here this would go on too long.
It was just the worst 45 minutes of DW
At least Sleep No More was just boring.
Character Arcs, What Are They
Graham’s arms give out in season 1 for carrying the team.
The Doctor against Tim Shaw is laughable, there’s no conflict past killing a couple of people, so Graham has to have that moral dilemma instead, Ryan manages to respect him and call him gramps, but that’s more Grahams arc than Ryans. Yaz has nothing, the Doctor learns nothing.
But series 2, the Doctor’s given an arc, which is something, considering that before this it was a throwaway line about Timeless Child from a piece of cloth.
Gallifrey is gone again, the insurance rates at this point are through the roof on this planet, she’s been told the Master did it for learning a terrible truth. But she of course doesn’t explore the ruins until she has to, but ah well, we can live with that, that’s fine in Doctor Who. I’m not even being sarcastic, the Doctor through all iterations isn’t very clever.
It gives her a bit of a mood that’s not really explored too much past that, but then we’re given Jo Martin as The Other Doctor
My opinions on throwing in Doctors from the past aside, (I love you John Hurt but damnit), Jo plays a competent Doctor, and her attitude clashes so well with Jodie that both actresses get to act well in good written scenes.
But then she’s just very confused until Gallifrey rolls around again.
We’ll ignore the retcon, again, but once she learns she gets super fucking pissed. And for good reason. Against the Master, against the Time Lords, against everyone, she’s shouting at everything, lost in her life.
But it’s sorted out very quickly by Jo intervention and then she’s much the same as ever.
Well, I say that, what I mean is “Willing to burn and kill all life on Gallifrey” with a button press. Yeah I know that the Time Lords are dead and the Master is about to kill everyone but you wouldn’t let a Spider be shot through mercy killing and you expect me to jump to “Would absolutely murder the Master and desecrate the bodies of the Time Lords”
It doesn’t matter anyway, for she has not the will to do so.
But she lets someone else do it
For fucks sa-
And at the end, what has she learned? That the thing she only knew half an hour ago shouldn’t affect her, so back to status quo
Wasted potential - Monsters
Imagine a super cool idea for a monster? Cool, add it into an episode.
And now get rid of it super quickly or butcher the premise.
REGENERATING CYBERMEN? Let’s have one shoot the other to show how bad it would be and then kill them immediately.
The Pting, capabale of disrupting a ships infrastructure an- Nah, just dick around with the lights.
A TIME TRAVELLING RACIST WHO KNOWS HOW TO FUCK UP THE TIMELINE
Let’s not even reference him 15 episodes later
Cyberman hybrid?
You get the idea.
The Master, or rather, the Missy Issue
The Master is putting on his best Simms Master homage, and like, I get it. It’s a good Master, and Sacha really puts his all into it.
I can only hope that this Master is before Yana. Missy’s exit was poetic, done well. Of course, just when she could feel ok joining the Doctor, the obstacle in her way was herself.
It’s not even the fact she died and why is he back now, it’s ... this Master has almost no nuance to him. He wants the Doctor to know the truth, which is at least some Master motives, but then its just wanton destruction for the sake of it. Like Simms but “what if we made him more crazy” The Master is more than this, can be more than this. It was nice seeing Jodie try and relate to him but this Master has thrown out three years of compelling evolution of the character. To throw it all out seems ... odd.
I can’t fault his performance though, he can be real damn quiet and sinister and really out there when he’s screaming at things.
The episodes themselves
Good cast, good side characters, good ideas, butchered in execution by not exploring the main cast, falling flat on the ideas and by the second season, losing the fun side characters.
Episodes I liked
Woman Who Fell To Earth
Rosa
Demons of the Punjab
WitchFinders
Takes You Away
Fugitive of the Judoon
Can you Hear me
Episodes I hated
Orphan 55
Arachnids
The Timeless Children
The Battle of Ranskoor Av Kolos (for cutting everything short)
Everything else was mostly unmemorable I fell asleep on Ascension of the Cybermen, had to rewind it.
The Retcon
You knew this was coming.
I put it last for I feel there’s a hundred and one issues here and it’d be cruel to just go for the obvious first. Maybe people would think I’d be against this one thing and that’s why I hate the rest. God no, I was so annoyed going into this episode, let alone for what it was about to deliver.
I don’t outright hate past Doctors. Hell, shove the brains of Morbius in there. It shits a bit on Hartnell and established lore a bit, but still.
“But the Brains of Morbius said-“
The eighth doctor said he was half-human, there are some bits of this canon we ignore.
But oh well, it’s not the main crux of the issue.
The Doctor, before this, was a Time Lord. He wasn’t much of a good one, by Time Lord standards at least. Ran from the schism, wasn’t as good as the Master in school, didn’t like the stuffy nature of his race, or their non-intervention policy. Ran off in a stolen ship with a knackered console and wanted to see the universe.
He flouted the rules. He stood up for people where Time Lords wouldn’t. Observe, don’t intervene. But the Doctor couldn’t, too curious, too inquisitive. He got a fondness for humans, god knows why.
But this Time Lord was against his own people, he was kinder than them, but alien to us. He wanted to learn, and left his planet to see if there was good in the universe. He was a rather shit Time Lord but helped where he could, making a difference in other people’s lives, trying to be the best he could be, learning.
This got him into trouble with the Time Lords of course, but, hey, it’s a funny old universe.
And we like that, as British folk. An underdog common person just trying to help out and be good.
What we’re not a fan of is saying the the Doctor isn’t just some Time Lord that likes helping out, but a chosen one who is the reason that Time Lords exist in the first place and is of another dimensional world and there were 50 of them and they knew kung fu in the super secret Time Lord service but they wiped her mind because it was super secret guys and she can live forever and is immortal and-
I was annoyed when the 50th made a slight mockery of the Time War. I get we don’t always have to stick so closely to canon, but holy shit the Timeless Child.
The fact it was exposition dumped on us and then wrapped up 10 minutes after with NEW ADVENTURES AT CHRISTMAS was just the icing on the cake.
If you wanted to pull this off, this should have been the Doctor’s struggle for the next season, coming to terms that her life is missing, that the Time Lords did this, that she didn’t even know what was right or not
But no, resolved. Felt not like adding to the lore but upending it on its head to say he could.
It’s why I don’t blame Jodie, who does an excellent job. Or the cast.
I blame Chibnall.
And it wouldn’t be as bad if the writing leading up to it helped serve the episode. But there was nothing there.
Conclusion
The writing is trash, the Doctor is underdeveloped, the cast outside of Graham aren’t explored, the setup for the finales are weak and uninspired, the retcons are going to cause major issues down the line and you’ve changed the very nature of the Doctor’s character and didn’t even have good writing behind it nor did much to explore it.
And I’m sorry it had to happen to such a good casting decision.
Here’s hoping you sign on to Big Finish and they give you some good storylines Jodie, you deserve it.

does talking to an anon help about ninjago help? cuz I'm down
DHDKCKGSC YES IT DOES THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR OFFERING YOUR SERVICES
Okay now that I know I won’t be clogging people’s dashes buckle the fuck in my dude and I should stress that I literally would not be talking about this as much as I will be if I didn’t genuinely enjoy the show. I’m gonna go season by season and just Rant
S1 has the serpentine as the bbeg and like, as far as villains go they’re p lit. They’re early enough that they haven’t been done to hell, things are fresh, the characters and dynamics are being fleshed out, and all in all s1 is a pretty solid season. There’s some fuckery that gets brought up re: how the FUCK aging works and what the actual timeline of Ninjago is and how Wu and Garmadon fit into that timeline, fuckery that LITERALLY NEVER GETS RESOLVED IN A SATISFYING WAY BC ITS REVEALED IN A LATER SEASON (s8, dw we’ll get there lmao) THAT THE ONLY REASON THE FIRST SPINJITSU MASTER, WU, AND GARMADON LIVED AS LONG AS THEY DID IS CUZ THEYRE BASICALLY DEMIGODS AND ITS IMPLIED THAT LLOYD WILL ALSO LIVE FOR A LONG ASS TIME WHICH MEANS ONE DAY HES GONNA OUTLIVE ALL HIS FRIENDS AND EVERYONE HE EVER LOVED WHICH IS A FUN THING TO THINK ABOUT AT NIGHT But anyway I digress, s1 also coincidentally introduces Lloyd (he wasn’t in the pilot episodes that set up the rest of the series) and the existence of Evil Dad Garmadon.
S2 is where Garmadon starts acting a lot more Evil and a lot less Dad. He’s the main antagonist for that season, and I actually read somewhere that the show was originally slated to end after s2 which high key explains the fuckery of literally every single season after this lmaooooo. Much like s1, I really can’t find much to complain about, the first two seasons are pretty decent as far as I can remember
Season. Fucking. Three. Where the fuck do I start??? I hate season three for entirely personal reasons revolving around the STUPID GODDAMN ROMANCE WRITING. okay lemme back up and explain a thing first so, Jay is dating Nya and they’re fine, they’re going steady, aND THEN????? THE BEGINNING OF THE SEASON INTRODUCES BULLSHIT LOVE TRIANGLE FUCKERY FOR ZERO GODDAMN REASON, BITCH I HATE LOVE TRIANGLES AND I HATE THEM EVEN MORE WHEN THEYRE DONE FOR NO GODDAMN REASON!!! AND THEN. AS IF THAT WERENT ENOUGH. THEY SHOEHORNED A ROBOT ROMANCE BETWEEN ZANE AND PIXAL AND I KNOW I RANTED ABOUT THIS A LITTLE BIT WHEN I WAS ACTUALLY WATCHING BUT I DIDNT GO INTO ENOUGH DETAIL!!!! THEY MADE THE OTHER NINJA OOC IN ORDER TO PROP UP THEIR SHIP!!!!!! AND AT ONE POINT ZANE GOES “its like we were…made for each other” AND I HAD TO FUCUCJDHVE I HAD TO SCREAM INTO A PILLOW BRO, IM SO TIRED!!!! NO THE FUCK YOU WERENT!!!!!! YOU WERE MADE FOR YOU AND PIXAL WAS MADE FOR PIXAL AND IF YALLS WANNA BANG BOLTS THATS FINE BUT DONT IMPLY THAT EITHER OF YOU WERE MADE INCOMPLETE!!!! THATS AN INSULT TO YOUR MAKERS AND YOURSELVES, MOVE ON, PLEASE AND THANK YOU. anyway that season also killed Zane (for the first time, but not the last) (spoiler alert lmao) and like, not to be an emotional little shit but I did cry a bit at his funeral.
S4 is honestly one of my favorites, even though the romance crimes continue (the love triangle bullshit is continuing and honestly I maintain that Cole, Nya, and Jay should all have gotten together and in my personal canon they DID, and also Kai has a forced romance) the VILLAIN makes up for it imo. He’s campy!! He’s funny!! He’s a clown!! He’s serious enough that if he says “I’m gonna kill you” HE MEANS IT and that’s so fucking refreshing!!!! S4 is honestly 8/10 just for the villain alone, don’t like that it retconned the SHIT out of the elemental masters and how many different elements there are TO master but eh, it’s ninjago, shit is stupid.
S5 was…interesting? OH WAIT I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT S3 INTRODUCED A GARMADON WHO WAS A LOT LESS EVIL AND A LOT MORE DAD, HONESTLY I THOUGHT IT TOOK A LOT OF THE FLAVOR OUT BUT THATS JUST ME LMAOOO. anyway s5 killed Garmadon, and I was a little sad cuz I like him okay??? I just think he’s NEAT, he’s got big dad energy, he was teaching Lloyd some shit that just got DROPPED and literally was never brought up again which is honestly a theme in Ninjago. Ninjago drinking game: take a shot every time they introduce a plot point or ability and drop it at or before the end of the season. WHICH THEY ALSO DID IN S5 WITH A DIFFERENT POWER ACTUALLY, so all the ninja are masters of Spinjitsu right, well s5 introduced the concept of Airjitsu which only Spinjitsu masters can learn and it lets them FLY and they used that for seasons 5 and 6 and then they nEVER BROUGHT IT UP AGAIN EVEN THOUGH IT WOULDVE COME IN HANDY FOR S E V E R A L DIFFERENT SITUATIONS ACROSS THE SEASONS, ONE OF THEM WOULD BE FALLING TO THEIR DOOM AND MY ASS WOULD BE YELLING “YOU CAN FLY, DUMBASS - anyway, they do that again later lmao it’s fine. But what’s low key NOT fine is they made Nya the WATER NINJA!!! Like I’m not mad she has powers, except I kinda am, she was doing just fine as Samurai X and honestly the only reason she has super special ninja powers is for plot reasons. Also Cole got turned into a ghost, but by s7 he’s????? No longer a ghost????????? And that’s NEVER addressed or reasoned away, so like. Cool lmao
S6 didn’t happen. Like, canonically, s6 ends with wish fuckery that undoes the entire season and none of the characters remember anything that happened except Jay and Nya because S6 is the season where they get back together so they remember all those events for???? Feelings reasons?????? Unclear, moving on. The actual bbeg for S6 was a djinn with a vaguely Spanish accent, and to this DAY I don’t know why they made him have a SPANISH accent. Djinn are Arabic, not Spanish!! They’re not central or South American, either!!!! Your villain design makes no sense, do better
S7 had MORE time fuckery, and retconned what happened to Kai and Nya’s parents and hmmmhmhmhmhmhm that makes me Upsetti Spaghetti :3 not just the retconning, but the fact that they LITERALLY brought them back oNLY TO NEVER MENTION THEM AGAIN!!!!!! LITERALLY!!!!!!!! Okay so at the VERY very beginning, like pilot episodes beginning, Kai talks about their dad like he died/left fairly recently, BUT s7 contradicts that and claims that both of their parents were essentially abducted when Kai and Nya were little kids, which makes me question what in the fresh fuck two little kids were doing for all those years alone. SETTING THAT ASIDE FOR A HOT SECOND, their parents were also apparently good friends of Wu’s and old war buddies (from the Serpentine wars, which is YET ANOTHER bit of the timeline that doesn’t quite add up but honestly I could make a whole other post about that shit). But if they were such good fucking friends, why didn’t Wu check in every now and again??? What the fuck was Wu doing that was so fucking important that he couldn’t have been assed to visit his friends ONCE in like TEN MOTHERFUCKING YEARS and realize “oh shit, they’re not here and there are two tiny children running around unsupervised…My Kids Now : )” LIKE????? WU YOU LOW KEY SHOULDA LOOKED OUT FOR YOUR FRIENDS’ KIDS BETTER, THEY COULDA DIED BRO!!! Uhhhh the time fuckery also results in Wu getting yeeted ahead in time a bit and the ninja gotta find him
Season. Eight. I have…mixed feelings about this one. The beginning absolutely SLAUGHTERED me, and not in a “this is so fucking funny” way. No, the beginning made me feel like I was being flayed alive with just about every episode because Ninjago was back on its forced romance bullshit and this time it was Lloyd’s turn on the chopping block. That hurt my soul cuz like, look at that mans color scheme, he’s CLEARLY alloaro, why are you forcing romance on my aro man, why would you hurt me like that, BUT ALSO BECAUSE HE AND THE GIRL HE WAS BEING SET UP WITH HAD A LITTLE HEART TO HEART REALLY EARLY ON AND IT WAS THE MOST QUEER CODED SHIT!!!! IT DEADASS READ AS A CONVERSATION BETWEEN AN OUT AND PROUD QUEER AND A CLOSETED QUEER AND THEY MADE!!! IT!!!!! STRAIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!! The only thing that kept me watching at first was wanting to find Wu, and then I started enjoying myself once Cole found a plot-relevant baby and had fatherhood thrust upon him. Everything went from “ehhhhh” to “holy shit this FUCKS” once it was revealed that Rumi (Lloyd’s love interest) wAS PLAYING HIM THE WHOLE TIME AND WAS EVIL AND HAD AN EVIL GIRLFRIEND!!!!!! LITERALLY IMPROVED EVERYTHING ABOUT THE SEASON FOR ME, I COULD EVEN FORGIVE THE WHOLE “let’s resurrect Garmadon, but as evil as possible” BULLSHIT!!!!!!
S9 is a continuation of s8, Garmadon is back and 1000% Evil, 10% Dad, but none of the Dad energies is directed at Lloyd - it’s all directed at Rumi, and honestly I could write a whole ass post on just RUMI cuz that’s honestly my DAUGHTER and I LOVE HER and I’m MAD SHE DIES AT THE END OF THIS SEASON!!!! SHE DESERVED THERAPY AND TO LIVE WITH HER GF AND MAYBE SOME CRIME. AS A TREAT. RUMI DESERVED BETTER AND LOW KEY IM GONNA WRITE A FIC ABOUT IT, BUT ANYWAY WHERE WAS I
Ah right, so s9 has the four major Ninja stuck in the original dimension with no way home, while Lloyd has no powers (cuz he almost died last season) and has to somehow lead a resistance against Garmadon (who has taken control of Ninjago City and is working on the rest of Ninjago). Actually, s9 is pretty cool. Like, the end of s8 and into s9 are low key my favorite episodes, and I kinda wanna rewatch them now -
S10 is a FUN one. Garmadon got got last season, but he didn’t DIE, so he’s in cold storage and now there’s Another Threat and he’s the only one who knows wtf they’re up against so they let him out and he works with them. The funny part is, he is still Very Much Evil and doesn’t quite Get emotions like he did when he was, uh, human lmao, sO HE WOKE UP EVERY DAY DURING THAT SEASON AND DECIDED TO CAUSE PROBLEMS ON PURPOSE. IT WAS THE FUNNIEST FUCKING SHIT. 1000000/10 MY FAVORITE GARMADON, he ended that season by literally fucking off into Ninjago and they never decided to track him down 😭😭😭😭😭and I’m so SAD about it dude
S11 has another Serpentine as the bbeg, though in the setup to that they retconned how the fucking Serpentine tribes and history work??? I think???? Also Wu was a good 150% angrier and generally Done with the ninja’s shit, which was honestly refreshing tho I’m not quite sure I liked what the refreshed view was, but whatever lmao. S11 also had the ninja get yeeted to the dimension farthest from Ninjago, and honestly - okay, so they didn’t all go at the same TIME, Zane left about a week or two before the others did but there was time dilation fuckery afoot which I’m not too mad about cuz low key it makes sense. What I AM mad about is that they didn’t play the angst up to its full POTENTIAL!!!!!! Zane was EVIL in the other dimension!!!! Okay so I’m Ninjago he was only gone for maybe a week or two, but DECADES had passed in the other one, and all that time Zane was alone and disconnected from everyone he knew and loved, with a staff that boosted his power while slowly corrupting him and Turning Him Evil to help him, and like???? The thought of Zane trying to find a way home, trying to get SOME sort of message back, while he has to use the staff more and more to help him survive the long, lonely decades, so that by the time his family DOES show up its too late??? BRO. B R O. THAT JUST HITS DIFFERENT, BUT NINJAGO DIDNT DO THAT!!! THEY MADE HIM EVIL DUE TO MEMORY WIPE!!!!!! MEMORY WIPE IS BABY SHIT COMPARED TO A LONG, SLOW CORRUPTION!!!!!!
S12 was alright. It went into Cole’s mom, touched on some of the adventures she had had, threatened another forced romance (this time on poor Cole, just leave my mans ALONE) but thankfully didn’t follow through this time, introduced cool new powers that honestly hasn’t been elaborated on since that’s the most recent season I think lmao
Anyway thanks for reading and letting me rant!!!! I have,,So Much More I could talk about, PLEASE ask me about Rumi, some of my headcanons re: Garmadon and Wu’s dynamic, the Serpentine, my top five times they butchered Kai’s character for Plot Reasons, or anything else I brought up here that you want me to elaborate on!!!
#technical talks#ninja hoe#ask dadzawa#nonnie#this was honestly therapeutic tysm#and it let me kill time before I play Mario kart so bonus points!!#I definitely forgot to mention A Lot (like all the times one or all of the ninja lost their powers)#so like!!! feel free to bug me for more shit!!!!

Plance Mega Meta
Attention all Fellow Gardeners! LOOOONNG Post Ahead!!!!
This was a pain in the butt to make but well worth it! It's all over the place but it still presents my point of the many reasons why Pidge and Lance is most likely Endgame. Some may be a stretch but most of them have meaning! I know I missed some but it was hard to fit all this together and still remember everything lol
Ofcourse, whether your for Plance or just scrolling around, it's your opinion to agree or disagree! It's fine! This is just an analysis of mine and other gardeners of why Plance may be endgame in our eyes! :)
Alrighty Then!
Okay, I’m starting off with all the comics of them that I know of!
“Lance’s Guide To Falling in Love” explains that you need activities that you both like to do each other. That sounds a lot like Pidge and Lance with the Game Console they both got! That’s a similar activity they always do! “Love is about feeling vulnerable. [. ] finding your best friend. That’s why you have to create opportunities to fall in love.” That whole line pretty much explained Lance and Pidge’s relationship. They are pretty much best friends and I’m so sure they have been vulnerable towards each other in many ways that I will explain later on as well.
That second image on the right is just so cute because Lance is holding her shoulder for reassurance as she plays that chess game they’re lives depend on!
The second two images I put an arrow on so u guys can see which scene starts first. On these two panels, first, Pidge had forgotten a lot of things when she put on that crown. I think it was that it gave her too much knowledge that it made her forget things or something but slowly started remembering and the first thing she remembered was Lance. If that doesn’t show she cares about him, aside from her actually saying she’s glad he’s not dead, then I don’t know what is! I'll also add that the last bit where he said "I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said to me" and she replies "Is that true?" maybe made her question herself because maybe she thought, Why would I be mean to him if I know I like him? Who knows. Lol.
So the third row of two pictures with Pidge, we all know she super smart and loves intelligent puns and Lance, well he tries to catch on. On the second picture he made a pun that Shiro caught onto so what is his reply? To not tell Pidge lol That just shows how much of an influence she’s become in him!
The fourth picture going down, we have Lance and Pidge saying some sort of jokes where they switch it up the next time they use those phrases again but I just love how close they seem and how gentle of expressions they seem to give each other on the second half of the panels!
As for the famous picture where Lance and Pidge are playing their game, well, Lance says that after seeing his family and so on that the next thing he will do is be with Pidge, and not just that! Take her her favorite cookies as well! That’s a great boyfriend right there! ;)
The last picture all the way on the bottom left is just cute banter and oh gosh. They are so cute!
Now, the final picture on the bottom-right, we have a page of Kaltenecker. But wait, his name is colored in a shade of Cyan… Cyan is a greenish-blue color, the color of the two Paladins who own her! Pidge and Lance! That’s just so darn… ugh! And the fact that Lance replied “Moo” for all the answers and the part where he said “we presume” only means they did all this together! That’s just so boyfriend/girlfriend of them!!! Lol
I’m sorry ahead of time if this gets confusing. I added what season/episodes some are in that I remembered.
The first four I want to talk about (First Two Screen Caps on the first and second row) are from 1x1 (Season 1 x Episode 1) where they are talking about a ship entering earths atmosphere. The fact that they didn’t say spacecraft or shuttle but chose SHIP makes it feel that DW (DreamWorks) did this on purpose because as soon as Pidge says it’s a ship then Lance snatches the goggles, that she is still holding, and uses them! And then she says “We gotta see that ship!” and Lance FOLLOWS! Only Lance! Hunk stays behind!
Top Right>> Okay so now I’m doing this to make it easier lol. This SC (Screen Cap) is Lance noticing that the Kurboros Mission is a touchy subject for Pidge. He’s been close to her since they met so that only makes their bond stronger. That and Lance has amazing Intuitive Skills that we all know of which I will bring up again later!
R2 SC3 (Row 2 Screen Cap 3)>> Pidge is annoyed of Hunk touching her equipment. You know who she isn’t annoyed of touching her things? Lance. 😏
R3>> This whole row is just dedicated to their lack of personal space towards each other! Just a few from many SC! This has to be another foreshadowing man lol
R4 SC1-2>> 7x6 The episode that gave us all heart attacks lol I’m sure you all have heard this already but this episode had so much Plance/Kallura. The cinematic perspective of this whole episode just yelled Plance and Kallura. In these two scenes both couples specifically grab onto each other, there being SC of only when Keith grabs Alluras hand and Lance grabbing Pidge's. The shot where those light creatures come around them, you see Pidge, while holding Lances hand in the sweetest way in the back and same with Allura with Keith. Its just so… so… cinematically pleasing if you go for either ship lol
R4 SC3>> This was just a cute shot of them I put in to fill in the gap lol but its great!
R5 SC1-3>> 1x4 This episode was when Lance saved Coran from the explosion the fake Rover made. When Shiro and Lance are captures by Sendak, Pidge goes to save them only to be captured by him but Lance suddenly woke up from his unconscious state to shoot Sendak and save Pidge. He then falls back to the floor. I think this shows so much. Sure, he has yet to know Pidge was a girl at that time but he’s so close to her that he wouldn’t let anyone hurt her, even when he’s unconscious lol.
R6 SC1-2>> 1x1 Going back to this episode. I had seen this since I started watching the series but didn’t think much of it until I really put attention to the scene the second time around. Lance was showing off to Pidge, calling himself “The Tailor” and what not. Pidge in response gave a small blush, even of he did fail the simulator test. Sure, he obviously has yet to know she’s a girl but whose to say that’s just how their relationship has unknowingly built up? ;)
R6 SC3>> 2x6 This is interesting because Lance made fun of Pidge first saying her fancy Galra Finder didn’t work, then her showing her annoyed face. It then changes the scene to Shiro talking to one of the Aliens telling them the Galra were there only to change the scene back to Lance and Pidge, Pidge saying “So the Galra were here, Lance.” With a smug expression causing Lance to blush. Why would DW go back to this scene? It’s just playful banter BUT playful banter of them hinting us of a relationship to be maybe!
R1 SC1-2>> It’s cute how Lance is all excited telling Pidge “That’s my thing!” when she didn’t believe he was a good shot haha like he gets excited telling her things!
R2 SC1-2>> These both are from different episodes but are of both Lance and Pidge blushing. Lance from him acting cocky and Pidge from seeing Lance in a body suit (at least that’s what I think) where she can see all the toned parts of his body ;) She is a teenager after all lol
Top Right Down Three>> All these SC are symbolic to me. A foreshadowing because these are a few of many where it shows them together in a single scene or doing the same. This shows me that they can’t be any more similar than they already are! They are one in the same honestly.
Last Three Down>> 5x6 This scene is one of my Favorites! Allura and Lotor had left to check out where Altean Alchemy is held along with the knowledge of Alteans and Lance is freaking out talking to everyone asking if she will be alright or if they are doing anything as Pidge and the rest try to turn the Castle back on. This whole time Lance interrupts them as Pidge works on the castle. Sure it sounds that she’s simply annoyed but if you listen to the tone she sounds more than annoyed! It’s like she’s annoyed, not just because he’s interrupting them, but because he’s over exaggerating about Allura. Obviously everyone is worried but Lance just goes overboard causing Pidge to also go overboard as everyone just stares at both of them back and forth. Haha.
Last 3 Second Row Down>> These three shots are from different episodes but you can see that it’s Hunk and Pidge doing their Team Punk Bump as Lance watches. I don’t exactly remember the order of it and some scenerios are different than others but you can see that he’s not always keeping a big smile. Almost like he’s jealous that they have a ‘Thing’ while he doesn’t have one with either of them *cough* Pidge *cough*.
Last 3 Third Row Down>> This could kind of be related to the last point. 6x3 When they are done playing M&M, Pidge and Hunk got out of their stump from what they are doing, make an explanation of what to do next and run off. Meanwhile Lance looks somewhat annoyed, saying that he doesn’t understand the science words as much as the fantasy ones but his expression from looking at them then look away seems to show otherwise!
R1 SC1-2>> These two scenes have Lance with Pidge’s stuff! Her headphones and some of her pillows! Strange that she’s okay with Lance getting her stuff but not Hunk lol
R1 SC3>> 1x6 Where Pidge reveals she’s a girl and everyone BUT Lance knew. It’s weird that he didn’t know because he has amazing intuition. It kind of feels to me that maybe he’s playing dumb? Maybe he DID know? That’s why he’s always been ‘show offy’ with Pidge. Maybe… just maybe… that’s a big stretch right there but an interesting thought lol.
R2 SC1-2>> These two are a little different. The first one, Hunk and Pidge are teasing Lance because Allura is with Lotor but Pidge is kind of teasing in a ‘Haha she won’t return your feelings’ kind of way because she likes him. In the next one Lance and Pidge are teasing Hunk with Shay but her expression is more playful. Hmm. Interesting. ;)
R2 SC3/R3 SC3>> 7x1 “Wow. They’re a lot uglier than I thought they’d be.” “I think it’s cute. You know, in a creepy hideous sort of way. Like you Lance.” The fact that Pidge acknowledged Lance was even remotely cute shows she likes Lance! C’mon y’all! The look that Coran gives Pidge after that comment just kills me haha. He’s like “Ahhh. I see you Numbah five.” 😂 but really. The fact that Pidge says that right after Lance talks shows it even more!
R3 SC1-2>> So I actually have these two flipped wrong but the one with him by himself is when Pidge calls him the goofball of the team. At first it seems like he didn’t care much, since it’s their usual banter but then when Lance talks to Allura, it seems that Pidge’s words do somewhat get to Lance. Not in a mean way but Lance is vulnerable when it comes to Pidge.
R4>> 2x4 It’s taken me a while to figure this scene out because it was always strange to me how Pidge’s tone is. (Also, sorry I cut off some of the subs 😅) Pidge is amazed by how beautiful the tech is while Lance replies saying “It’s not a sunset Pidge” because maybe he loves sunsets. In that, Pidge replies “Your right. A billion sunsets just happen every day” with a kind of somber tone. Maybe she’s never really cared for sunsets? But in that third SC in the row, there is a small picture of a sunset on a beach on her wall. Maybe she’s coming to enjoy sunsets because of Lance? Maybe he’s talked to her about it? Maybe it reminds her of him? Interesting. There is also one more piece I will bring up in the next set of SC’s.
R5>> These! 1x4 Lance sees Rover but right away wonder where Pidge is because he knows she’s close to it. 7x4 The third SC is from The Feud when Lance is trying to remember Rolo's name. Interesting that right after trying to remember Rolo he says “Yeah. Pidge loved that Robot.” Not “Nyma was awesome.” Or “They tricked us”. He could have said any of that but chose something that reminded him of Pidge!
R6>> 2x2 Lance mentions he likes mermaids (maybe because he’s always loved the beach) and in 4x2 in Pidge’s room, she has a stuffed Mermaid!
Out of context but I just realized that for the whole Rover thing, its on Ep 4 of S 1 & 7. For the mermaid thing it’s on Ep 2 of S 2 & 4. What a weird coincidence lol.?
R1 SC1>> 6x2 Chulatt and Chuchule making a heart with their cute little mice tails! This scene is where the mice tell Allura Lance’s secret of him liking her. What I feel gives away plance, and is ironic, is that those two specific Space Mice create the heart! The little one (Chulatt) is Pidge and the pink one (Chuchule) is Lance. We know this because there was a photo of the mice in Paladin Armor and they were in those specific colored armors. If anyone wants to add that picture in the comments, knock yourself out lol.!
R1 SC2-3>> 2x7 Hey look! Another sunset! And not just that. In the store they got a game console that they worked hard to get together, along with their Moo Child, Kaltenecker! 😏 Lol. This episode really brought out the relationship they have in full bloom! First! Lance was originally going to go with Allura and get her something pretty and shiny BUT instead, he stopped flirting to go and help Pidge get something she really wanted! Plus, had a blast doing it! The tender look he gives her when she’s holding the game is so heartwarming and he’s just as excited as she is to start the console up! Remember what he said is a point to falling in love? “Love is about finding your best friend.” Welp. There ya go Lance.!
R2 SC1-2>> 4x3 Before this scene Matt had complimented Pidge for being smart, so she responded with a goofy smile. Lance also compliments her intelligence right after Matt. She gives him this soft look. I rest my case. Lol.
R3 SC1-2>> 7x9 The Paladins arrive back on earth where their loved ones await them. The most anxious is Pidge as she jumps to her mom and who, you may ask, does it change to right afterwards? Lance. The shot has Lance and Hunk but it’s more zoomed in on Lance with the gentlest look that I believe he’s ever gave honestly. He then gets interrupted by his family running to him, him in tears of the joy in seeing them. THIS is another reason why I believe they are endgame because both love their family so much, who reside on earth. I can’t imagine them wanting to stay in space once the war is over. They are made for each other honestly haha.
Top Right going Down SC 2-3>> These two scenes are parallels. They both have strong feelings for eachother and are extremely protective of one another. 7x3 First Lance with his “Don’t you touch her!”. His choice in words just scream I’ll kill you! Because of how protective of her she is. Knowing he is tired up and unable to do much, he still tried to rescue her. 2x10 Pidge’s “Lance! No!” Just tells me she has liked him for so long. Her feelings were already strong since the beginning. This scene didn’t need to emphasize on her wanting to save Lance and showing emotion but DW did it this way on purpose! ;)
R4>> 6x3 Ahhh. Monsters & Mana again! You know how we’ve all found out that the filler episodes aren’t actually fillers but a foretelling of future things? Well, look at these cuties once again having lack of personal space! And then the second SC is of Pidge looking up at Lance instead of looking at the view like the others but still enjoying herself with her big smile! The third SC is now of Lance giving her that gentle look once again. Instead of looking at the view, he looks at Pidge as she is having the time of her life!
R5 SC1-2>> 5x1 I kind of messed up on my choice of SC but I’m sure you all will still understand. This episode is when Matt and Pidge failed in saving their dad. Pidge is there hugging her legs from the thought of her dad not being around anymore. Lance is the first to turn to see her and then Hunk. What I see though is Hunk having a worried expression and Lance looks a little worried for her as he is turning but once he is standing and looking her way, he looks more determined. Determined for her to get her father but for her to also be safe maybe? Last thing is that on the SC where it shows her hugging her legs, Lance is still in the shot. I would say that this is a vulnerable scene for Pidge because she is so in distress because of her father.
R5 SC3>> 6x7 Just a simple SC of Pidge looking back at Trash Lance as they get ready to leave the Castle of Lions. Trash Hunk is there too but she looks over Trash Lance lol.
R6>> 4x3 This whole row scene is just so cute. Lance and Hunk run to Pidge as she lands. Lance being the first one to get to her just smile at seeing his girlfriend back lol. She gives them all a smile as she holds her little space mouse.
R1 SC1 Down First Two SC>> 1x10 I don’t think many think much of this scene but how can you not? The first SC Pidge messed up the robot and said “Whoops” but the second one was after Lance was asking about Allura, giving off a goofy smile until Pidge’s robot smacked him in the face. Afterwards she said “Whoops” again but in a more sarcastic tone. That’s jealosy at its finest lol.
R1 SC2 Down First Two SC>> Lance is showing off the pictures of him with the alien girls but to Pidge. I sometimes wonder if he did it on purpose to get a reaction from her because she was smiling before he showed her the picture. Jealousy moment numero dos! Lol
R1 SC3 Down First Two SC>> 1x10 I love this scene because as soon as Keith leaves after Lance told him to not leave, he glances over to Pidge who is very unimpressed. Afterwards he turned his head with a smug expression saying “I think I told him” and Pidge responding with the most sarcastic “You are the paragon of leadership, Lance” with him still being all proud. Its all just ugh. I love their relationship hahaha.
R3>> Dancing buddies? I think Yes! Lol how much more perfect can they be for eachother? Hahaha
R1>> 2x4 Yet another scene I love because in this scene Lance and Pidge are kind of moving in sync. Lol. It’s so them haha.
R2&3 First SC>> 7x10 This is another scene that I don’t think that a lot of people take too in depth but Allura and Lance just had a moment where they both blush. Afterwards, all the paladins head out to their destination as they concentrate but Pidge looks like the only one that’s a little… sad? Distressed? The little lines under her eyes show a different emotion than the other paladins. She looks like she’s just thinking. I think she may have seen Allura with Lance and now is torn by her feelings because Allura might reciprocate his feelings. Right after her shot of the green Lion arriving to her, it turns to Lance who is calm and ready but we all know that scene that red showed up just in the Knick of time. I think red knows that Lance is meant to be with another, not with the one he wants but someone he will need.
R2&3 Second SC>> 6x2 This is where Lance is trying to get Alluras attention but she’s too into Lotor to care. Lance says “She’s smart, courageous, and makes me want to be a better person”. Adding on that aside from being an alien princess, she’s those things but that he isn’t a prince like Lotor so what does it matter. The first SC he honestly explained Pidge so if that’s what he is looking for in someone then maybe that was a hint to us. And then he goes on saying that Allura won’t take his feelings seriously and that he has nothing to offer. Maybe this is another foreshadowing that Pidge is going to take it super serious and he doesn’t need to offer anything with her because the way is is already everything she wants ;) That is a stretch though lmao.
R2&3 Third SC>> I’m just going to show you guys and not explain to much with this haha The Plance Nebula! We all know it but I don’t think we all yet know that it’s been in front of our faces all this time! In the intro of every episode when the screen pops up. That’s the nebula just on its side! Now answer me this. If it wasn’t important then why would it be right after Pidge’s Nebula in the trailer for S8???? That’s the only different nebula aside from all the others being the Paladins themselves!
I’m telling Y’all that alllllll this is what makes me think that Plance is Endgame!
This I needed to add alone because they are so cute! They are the only onea that did this lol
7x13 If these scene itself isn't enough to have you think they are foreshadowing them together then man. I don't remember seeing any other two Paladins do this when they use their bayards at the same time on voltron. Its just such a powerful scene for a super power couple!!!
Omg guys I can't believe I finished this. If you read all this then kudos to you! Please let me know what you guys thought or what your opinion is because I put alot of work into this for everyone to have their plance super watered lol
Thanks for the help guys!!! :) @callmesath @ohfishwall @truegryffindorforever2 @gracekogane

Buckle Up Nerds
This isn’t really a theory post, more like a post on something I wish would happen in the show because fuck I would pay DW to let me animate this
Okay so last night I was letting my mind wander for once while trying to read some good ol’ fanfiction and a thought struck me - what did that fight between Keith and Shiro do to Keith?
Just listen to me
For a show about war, it shouldn’t be a surprise to have the characters experience PTSD like Shiro did. Considering the show hasn’t touched up on any of the other characters’ mental states except Shiro - who went through a lot of shit throughout the entire show, including fucking dying - something really bad would have to happen for the show to go into their mental health.
Soooooooooo what about Keith?
You know, Keith - the guy who had to fight the man he looked up to and put his trust into for most of his life? Who had to do everything he could to keep the Shiro clone from killing him while also trying to not hurt him?
No seriously, the only point in which Keith tries to hurt Shiro is when his Galra features show. The first time he technically lashes out at the clone is when he tries to punch him - so basically trying to hurt the clone without the weapon he has in his hand. The second time he lashes out is with his weapon, and his Galra features come out. The second his Galra features go away, he;s back to running and blocking the clone’s hits.
Throughout the entire fight, Keith is trying to talk sense into the clone while trying to not attack him. Even after everything the clone did, he obviously still wants to save Shiro because he was the only family he had as a kid.
So basically what I’m trying to say is - this entire scene right here had to do something to Keith’s mental state. No one can go through that and walk away all fine. They’d have nightmares and/or PTSD from having to do something like that. Really, there’s quite a few fanfics with Keith having nightmares over this fight, and honestly I love them because they’re so well written and show what that fight could’ve done to him.
Now, why am I talking so much about Keith having PTSD? Well, my good friends, because this would honestly be a great scene/episode for the season, even if they don’t touch on it later. I’d be satisfied if they just had something like this about Keith’s problems (mostly cause he’s my favorite and I love him)
In my head, I’m seeing Keith having a nightmare about the clone Shiro coming for him, and when he wakes up, he doesn’t really remember where he is or anything and freaks the fuck out. He probably would grab his Marmora blade and run out of his room, and what would be an interesting scene is Keith seeing a bunch of clones just surrounding and going to attack him.
The thought about Keith sometimes being cautious towards Shiro now because of what he experienced helps this idea. He would probably fear the clones coming back and trying to kill everyone for Haggar.
So when a clone grabs Keith, he probably doesn’t hesitate to attack the clone. He doesn’t want his friends and family hurt, and will do anything to protect them. In his head, he can only see the many clone Shiros coming to kill him.
But the clone disarms him and keeps calling out his name, and Keith realizes he’s hallucinating. The clone dissolves into someone else, and honestly it could be anybody.
Imagine if it was Lance who found him and was trying to snap him out of it. Klance shippers would go fucking nuts because anytime these two interact, we fucking loose it. Gotta get that Klance content, even if it isn’t canon.
But it could also be James, so the two finally have a scene and make amends for their time in the Garrison, cause honestly they probably fought a lot. James would calm him down and they could talk about life and shit. The Jaith/Jeith shippers would thrive on something like this (including me holy shit)
Or it could be Hunk for more Hunk and Keith content, cause the part of my heart set for Heith cried over that episode where Keith was trying to help Hunk. Hell, even Pidge could be the person cause we don’t have enough scenes with Pidge and Keith.
Honestly, this idea would be perfect for some Keith bonding moments with any character. Maybe it could spark a talk between Shiro and Keith about the fight to help Keith get through with it. Maybe James or Lance could get Shiro, or Hunk could help Keith back to bed, or Pidge could distract him with some tech. Considering it would fit with the show since Keith did have something very traumatizing happen to him (cause I don’t think the show would just have Lance or Hunk have nightmares over the war in general cause they lame like that (i’m sorry DW don’t shoot me))
Even if something like this didn’t happen (which it 99% won’t happen cause when does anything I come up with happen on this show) I would probably make a comic or an animation of this in the future cause this idea is just too good to waste (in my opinion at least) cause it has a touch of angst and some good ol’ bonding.
Hell, someone write a fanfic about this with any ship they want cause I can just see the potential this one scene could have - and it could work with any ship
if you can’t tell i love angst
Honest to God, if this somehow made it into the show, even a part of what I just said, I would probably die. Literally. I will see the scene, and never be able to finish the series because something I thought of happened.
Buuuut yeah there you go - been thinking about this all day and finally was able to type it out. You can scream with me or at me - or even add on to this idea cause I’m lovin’ it
#hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh#dw do me a favor and just bless me with something like this#i love shows that dive into mental states#don't ask why let me live#keith#keith kogane#should i tag ships?#eh i'll tag ships#klance#jaith#jeith#sheith#heith#kidge#yay have fun shippers#voltron#voltron legendary defender#voltron season 8#voltron season 8 idea

One thing people overestimate is the power and reach of a fandom like this. In the recent tumblr answertime they said that it takes about a year to create ONE episode.
ONE. That’s it. Obviously they’re staggered and working on them at the same time, that’s why you have different directors, writers, and everything. That’s why you NEED showrunners like LM and JDS
The immature, monstrous outlash people are having against cast and crew of the show has not, does not, and never WILL impact a show. Especially because they don’t have to worry about network ratings.
Network ratings are where people COULD have an impact. Getting a renewal is where they could have an impact. Neither of those things applies to Voltron. They are on Netflix. They already have the order of how many episodes they were going to do. If anything, all you guys did was make it so that they wouldn’t extend that if they had wanted to, or do spinoffs. Good job.
Think about how quickly the seasons are coming out. They’re probably going to be finishing off the last tiny bits of season 8 right now. That wouldn’t be anything story-wise though.
The show is done. Your bitching has no impact on it one way or another, so all you’re doing is making yourself look like a complete and utter psychopath. Most people who threaten people online are genuinely immature and pathetic. Take away your computer screen and the distance, and you would NEVER say those things to their faces. If you still can, then you should probably have some kind of therapy because that’s NOT normal or acceptable behaviour.
The stuff about Shiro being popular so the story changed? That wasn’t the fandom. That was executives from DW predicting how the fanbase would react. That was not you guys gushing over Shiro.
Before people get on me for just wanting to defend a certain group, I do like Keith and Lance in a romantic relationship, but I’d be completely chill if they left them as good friends. That’s fine. I love their dynamic anyway, and if I couldn’t see them as just friends, how could I claim to like their story romantically? I’m almost ashamed that I like them though. The thing is, if they were planned to be together, they…still will be. It takes a year to animate ONE episode, you guys think your hissy fits (especially recent ones) are going to change things one way or another? It won’t.
It could make it the creator’s biggest regret though. It could stop additional content from being created later on.
This show wouldn’t exist, wouldn’t be the same thing without all of the people involved. That person that you’re threatening recently? The reason they actually did get a canonically queer Shiro on the show. They would have been roommates otherwise, probably with an add on comment of ‘oh yeah they were together’ ala Dumbledore afterwards. Instead, we’ll get to see it.
They all had a hand evolving the characters, and you can TELL that they love them. The VAs refer to the characters as ‘them’ as much as any live-action actor or actress would. They love the characters. The writers love the characters. The producers do. Yes, they like some more than others. That’s fine. The writing will never be perfect, that’s fine too.
They still know what they’re doing. They still know what’s best for THEIR characters. They’re telling the story they want to tell.
You can disagree, all media should be critiqued. That is one hundred perfect perfectly fine. It’s the verbal violence, the sheer lack of empathy or sympathy, the threats, that’s the problem. That is the farthest thing from okay.
The people that do this are actually in a minority, and despite what you think, they DON’T just come from one ship. You think people that hate Klance/Sheith/Shaladins/what the fuck ever don’t jump onto discourse and make it worse? That they don’t send threats just to make one group look bad? Oh they do. Other people just jump on the bandwagon and do it so that they can say ‘HA look what I did’. These people are NOT actual fans of the show or the characters.
This is a very small, but very loud group of trolls and idiots. Nothing you do will change the story.
I’d really like you see you speak to these people face to face. It’s SO easy when you’re behind a computer screen, where you can pretend you’re NOT talking to REAL people. Would I say everything I’ve written here to your faces? Absolutely. Without hesitation.
Fandoms in general are becoming more and more toxic and entitled thanks to the small, but super loud groups of delusional, entitled assholes in them.
Again, you don’t have to like or agree with everything in the show, or the opinions of the cast and crew. Not at all. There are healthy ways to handle this though. I’ve even SEEN people on this site do it, so it’s possible.
Everyone needs to work on that.

The Pilot (a wholock meta)
[I wrote these thoughts after watching Doctor Who ‘The Pilot’ last week and meant to post this. This is really just for myself so sorry in advance if I don’t make tons of sense here. I would say I’’m gonna write something about each ep but I usually don’t stick to what I say I’m gonna do haha so anything could happen]
Oh jeez where do even I start? The Pilot (!). Called as much supposedly because this DW episode can be watched by people new to the show. But me thinks that’s not all there is to it. There’s the flight of the dead and Girl on the Plane from TFP, the “Landing” as johnlock going canon ...and there’s also a Sherlock Pilot. Planes are ships. Pilots are the ones in control of that ship. It crashes, or it lands safely. There’s no planes in this DW episode (there are spaceships tho). But there’s a ‘ship’.
So Bill and Heather are John and Sherlock, obviously yes? But the mirroring works so both Bill and Heather are constantly both John and Sherlock for different sort of threads of the subtext. Heather even has a black coat and scarf in the pic above but then shortish blond hair like John.
Like @jenna221b said the “defect” in the eye that Heather wants to “fix” is sentiment (nice one), while Bill thinks it’s beautiful (“it looks like a star”). Sherlock thinks this is his weakness that needs to be fixed. But John sees that in him and loves him for it.
But were you not also reminded of Ben C’s eyes and his heterochromia?? I was. Her eyes were blue and green and gold. It would reinforce the Sherlock mirror. I wouldn’t put it past them because I’ve seen other character mirrors in other DW episodes given the names and traits of ben, martin and amanda because Moffat uses johnlock mirrors in SO many episodes that he must run out of ways to code them.
Heather was coded as suicidal - she in fact DID take her own life. I didn’t see this the first time. DUH! “Everywhere I go I just want to leave”. Then the puddle gets her and she does “leave”, because the puddle gives you what you want.
I have a feeling that the episode name is a sherlock clue on an extra level. What if it’s also about the Gay Pilot?? I think we’re seeing John and Sherlock where they were at the beginning of their journeys
(what if this doctor who season somehow takes us through a johnlock romance arc somehow with different mirrors every time?? Might not happen but would be neat. Bonus for any clues about what the heck sherlock s4 was).
Sherlock in ASiP wants to “leave” like Heather does in this “Pilot”, taking the cabbie’s pill gambling his life on a 50/50 chance. And John with his gun in his drawer, contemplating it for a moment at the beginning of ASiP. By TLD Sherlock’s gotten to the point where he realises, possibly even surprising himself, that he doesn’t want to die. That’s the end of his character arc though. But here we see Heather willingly let the puddle invite her in, just as Sherlock brings the pill up to his mouth in ASiP.
Maybe this is the significance of the chips. In TLD Sherlock gets chips for Faith because she’s suicidal, and Bill “Serves chips”. She keeps people from taking their lives. Sort of foreshadowing John’s arc, and how John saves Sherlock from that by giving him a reason to live (thats what boyfriends do, they feed you up).
We also have the “can I show you something?” “God, yes!” between Heather and Bill. Another pilot reference.
Heather’s last thought was of Bill, so once this evil alien puddle thingy had taken her, she pursued Bill to the farthest reaches of the universe (please stop me thinking of that johnlock fanvid and the song lyric “anywhere I would have followed you”).
And what the hell happens next is confusing but there’s a little metaphor in there and maybe a HLV and a TRF reference too (the Fall and Fall 2.0).
Bill: Oh my god, I understand. Doctor: You what? Bill: The last thing she said to me. She promised she wouldn’t leave without me.
In T6t we hear all this business about Sherlock’s vow. That it was apparently to protect Mary. It’s a TRICK! Word play. And Sherlock never actually said that before T6T began. T6T was Mary as storyteller, twisting Sherlock’s words to fit her own evil narrative. What he did say that I talked about here , was that he would always “be there”. Just that, that’s it. He promised he wouldn’t leave.
(this gets cooler if you think about EMP starting when Mary shot Sherlock because Sherlock’s vow he made at the wedding was ONE OF THE LAST things he ever said to John before the day of CAM tower) Bill about Heather: “The last thing she said to me. She promised she wouldn’t leave”
The Doctor tells Bill that she needs to release Heather from her promise, to let her go. So she does. They sort of...break up?
You have to let me go. You have to let me go. I will. I will. I really liked you. I really liked you.
In TRF Sherlock sort of breaks up with John before he jumps from the roof by telling John he was a fake. To maybe somehow attempt to release John from what was between them. But of course it didn’t work very well. And then there’s this parallel too...
Then Bill and Heather grab onto each other.
Doctor: Don't, don't! Bill, let go! Bill, listen to me. Whatever she's showing you, whatever she's letting you see. It's a lure, it's a trap. She's making you part of her, and you can never come back.
So what the hell happens here exactly? I have one idea that’s a bit trippy.
This brief kind of random scene is full metaphor for queerness, and the two opposing ways it is viewed: from the outside in, and from the inside out.
It’s also about John’s fear and internalized homophobia.
From the outside, those who fear it and are against it see it as something dangerous and terrifying, something that spreads and infects and marks you forever.
From the inside queerness is beautiful, good, and human.
Bill hesitates then grabs a hold of Heather, subconsciously drawn to this “danger” in front of her. We think she’s in danger because in that moment we the audience are seeing queerness from the outside in. But Bill isn’t in danger at all as we find out a moment later. Heather transports her to another world and Bill is sort of filled with a feeling of ecstasy. She doesn’t look scared, she looks happy.
Bill: I see what you see. It’s beautiful.
But on the outside the Doctor is terrified and thinks she’s in danger. Doctor: Whatever she's showing you, whatever she's letting you see. It's a lure, it's a trap. She's making you part of her, and you can never come back.
Bill mirrors John here, wanting to enter this world with Sherlock but feeling afraid, with the voice of his internalized homophobia telling him he’s being lured and trapped. That’s why Bill lets go, because she’s afraid. It’s suddenly Sherlock and John reaching for each other again, but that distance between them coming into focus and ripping their hands apart.
Bill: I saw it all for a moment ... everything out there. She was going to let me fly with her. She was inviting me. - But I was too scared.
Check out Moffat’s specific and meaningful word choice bolded above. Out there (out of the closet). Fly (because falling’s just like flying). And a reminder that John’s afraid.
So often with villains or monsters in DW, they simultaneously mirror something beautiful and something threatening. It’s the danger of those things that we long for but which could also hurt us. It’s a truth that will either kill you in trying to uncover it, or will set you free.
(there’s loads more i know. @jenna221b covered a lot of it. i just wanted to add these few details. thanks for reading. Here’s a Bill x Heather fanvid I found)

Ch. 1: “The Doctor Falls” Analysis Doctor Who S10.12: The Rescue Is Not Over, Heather & What the Prison Ship Tells Us
NOTE: TPEW = “The Pyramid at the End of the World” TRODM = “The Return of Doctor Mysterio” THORS = “The Husbands of River Song” CAL = Charlotte Abigail Lux, the little girl from the Library
The Rescue Isn’t Over
The long rescue isn’t over yet, which is why the Doctor’s story hasn’t ended. There is a Horse metaphor in the TARDIS at the end to prove it, shown below (red arrow).
Not only that, there are 4 other horses, too, symbolizing the 4 Horses of the Apocalypse, but with added new meaning, which we’ll examine. It’s foreshadowing for Christmas. We have to come back to the ship or a similar setting, and I’ll show you why in the another chapter. In fact, there are several other pieces of subtext that say the rescue isn’t over.
There’s also a mechanical-type horse that we’ll look at.
Not Everything Is As It Appears
Right at the start, we hear birdsong, a sign that we still haven’t gotten back to reality in the Library metaphor. We should finally get to the bottom of the main story in the Christmas Special. There’s plenty of foreshadowing for it in the finale, which I’ll show you throughout this analysis.
However, birdsong is not the only problem that says something is wrong. For example, the cut on the Doctor’s forehead should have healed over the 2 weeks between when Bill brought him back and she woke up. However, it didn’t. In fact, it opened up somewhat as the episode went on. This was going in reverse, just like his timeline.
Additionally, there were plenty of reflections, inverse reflections in the ponds, and other such things to tell us that we shouldn’t believe everything we are seeing.
In another oddity, Bill saw the Doctor’s regeneration energy on the prison ship in “The Lie of the Land,” so why didn’t she know about it in “The Doctor Falls”?
Also, how did the Doctor, CyberBill, Missy, the Master have trouble taking out one Cyberman, who came up in the lift in the forest? Yet at the end, the Doctor was going through the forest taking out numerous Cybermen all by himself, shooting them left and right?
Then, the scene with Bill and Heather in the TARDIS isn’t quite happening the way it looks. This suggests to me that Bill will be back in some form at Christmas, even if it’s a clip. And we’ll examine more subtext, telling us who Heather is. We looked at that before in “The Pilot” analysis, but there’s some additional information now.
We'll examine what's happening with some of these in this analysis.
Showing You the Subtext through a Different Format
Given that we have plenty of time to look at information before the Christmas Special comes out, I want to step back and give you a different format for how to look at what is happening in the finale and the rest of DW.
In the previous analyses, I haven’t concentrated too much on setting and characters. I’ve done more with themes and other important pieces of subtext. However, the setting, characters and themes all foreshadow things for Christmas, besides telling us more about the finale. Therefore, I want to concentrate mostly on these elements.
Another element we need to examine are a few mirrored scenes from other episodes, showing us how this all fits together with previous canon.
Brilliant 2-Part Finale with the Resolution in the Xmas Special
Before I get into the meta, I want to give you my opinion of the finale because I offered my opinion on two-part episodes before the airing of “The Doctor Falls.”
Typically, the subtext story in the 2nd part overtakes the surface story, leaving, for example, plot holes or something tied up too quickly, which takes away the emotional aspect. (This has happened a lot, too, with Season 10 in general, just because everything has to be tied up quickly since Capaldi is leaving.) With so much story left to tell before the final episode, I wasn’t sure how they could finish it adequately except through a cliffhanger.
Therefore, while I was deeply concerned that the 2nd part of the finale would never live up to such a great 1st part, I came away elated at how things turned out. The 2nd part was brilliant and very much lived up to the 1st half.
There was a fantastic mix of subtext story and canon because most of the subtext story prior to this has now become canon.
At the same time, I’m so grateful that Moffat opted to give the story the room it needs by finishing it in the Christmas Special. Still there’s a lot to tell. I have no doubt that the heart of the main story will get told, but many of the details will have to be in the subtext.
The subtext foreshadowed the main points that happened in the finale, and it was beautiful to watch how everything came together, showing us the near resolution of the Doctor’s 3-season character arc, as well as the very long story in the making since Classic Who. Not only that, Missy, too, had a 3-season-ish character arc, turning from the dark side at the end.
Also, I’m elated that the 1st Doctor showed up at the end, as the subtext suggested would most likely happen. We will hopefully see Susan, too.
So we need to see the final rescue story and the Doctor reuniting with his family.
Because the subtext was heavily referencing former cast members, I expected to see some of them show up, and they did. It just wasn’t in the way I imaged, except for John Simm. However, seeing clips of Jack and of all the Doctor’s female companions, including Sarah Jane, Clara, and River was enough to satisfy me until the Christmas Special.
Will Clara show up for Christmas? I’m not sure if her appearance in the finale counts as finishing the Great Work. The subtext in “The Eaters of Light” suggested that he was remembering her. However, does that mean he remembers everything about her? This has a complication, too, which I’ll show you below.
Extending the Library Metaphor: Holo-decks & Some Perception Filters
The brilliant 2-part finale extends the meaning of the Library metaphor in connection with the Eye of Harmony. We know that people in this metaphor typically live in dreams and illusions, like CAL does. The nightmarish situation of reality becomes just a nightmare while dreams seem real. That includes CAL seeing herself as a little girl even though she’s a cyborg. So the terrible truth is hidden.
The people on Floor 507 at the beginning of “The Doctor Falls” don’t even know they are on a ship. Therefore, they are analogous to CAL and Donna in the Library dream being fed lies by Doctor Moon. They are living in a Star Trek-style holo-deck.
Bill, too, mirrors CAL in not knowing she isn’t the person she once was. They both see themselves through memories. According to the Doctor, Bill’s mind is acting like a perception filter. She could easily be in a fugue state, where the mind runs away from the truth. We examined that with Jackson Lake in “The Next Doctor” and Oswin Oswald in “Asylum of the Daleks.”
Therefore, we can add a holo-deck to illusionary possibilities for our Library metaphor, along with some perception filters – when they act like they do with Bill and CAL. Also, we can add fugue states in similar situations.
The Doctor’s 3-season Arc: A Good Man?
The 12th Doctor has been on an amazing journey over the last 3 seasons, wondering at the beginning if he was a good man. He started off grumpy, aloof, and not caring after having helped end the Time War. While his journey isn’t over yet and he’s been taking the “long way home,” we have our answer.
He is both a good and great man. As a good man, he is helping the people on Floor 507 due to his kindness and decency, even to strangers, because it is right not to abandon scared children and adults. Also, as a good man, he is giving his life for them, and that is also part of what makes him a great man. We see the war hero in action, a man who has had a decisive historical impact on Gallifrey and the Time War. It’s now easy to see how he caused so many deaths.
The War Doctor
The BBC put out a promo photo of the Season 10 finale, which is a mirror of the one they put out for “The Day of the Doctor.” Since several analyses ago we examined my hypothesis that the Doctor was really the War Doctor, I was delighted to see them.
Here’s a 50th-anniversary image with the small version of the War Doctor in the middle, along with the 11th and 10th Doctors back-to-back.
Here’s the image the BBC put out for the Season 10 finale with the small version of the 12th Doctor in the middle, along with Missy and the Master back-to-back.
While the 11th Doctor calls the War Doctor “Granddad” in “The Day of the Doctor,” the Master, mirroring the 11th Doctor, calls the 12th Doctor “Granddad” in “The Doctor Falls.”
The Season 10 finale is meant to give us some subtext details of the Time War in a brilliant model of the Library metaphor universe, complete with a sort of, kind of Heaven metaphor, as well as a Hell metaphor. (We’ll examine this more in depth in a bit.) The Doctor is in a desperate, no-win situation, and while he could run, he’s made a choice. This is a retelling of the same choice the 8th Doctor makes: becoming the War Doctor to fight in the Time War.
The difference is that we don’t see the 12th Doctor regenerate. He doesn’t have to. He’s been transforming through the Great Work, returning to what he was born to be. The warrior, a weapon of mass destruction, and a child of war. His newborn consciousness, at least one face, arose from the ashes on Trenzalore. Then, we have a huge gap from there until we see him in “Deep Breath.” Part of events in that missing time can be inferred from what is happening in the finale.
After we examine the setting of the ship, floors, ice, characters, themes, etc., I'll put everything together for you, so you can see the Doctor’s story in a more condensed format, rather than through many analyses.
Problems with the Previous Time War Episodes
There are a lot of problems, oddities, and hand waving with the previous episodes talking about the Time War story. For example, the 9th Doctor said he stopped the Time War by blowing up Gallifrey, as well as all the Time Lords and all the Daleks. How is that possible unless they are all on Gallifrey? Why would the Doctor assume some are not on Skaro or elsewhere? This has never made sense to me. At least until the Season 10 finale, which I’ll explain in another chapter. Also, if he blew them up with the Moment (like what we saw in “The Day of the Doctor”), how did the Doctor survive according to what we think we know about him in canon?
“The End of Time”
In a 2nd example of weirdness, Rassilon and the Chancellor are talking about something really odd in “The End of Time” Part 2:
CHANCELLOR: The signal has been sent. A simple task of four beats transmitted back through time, and implanted in the Master's mind as a child. RASSILON: Then we have a link to where the Master is right now. CHANCELLOR: But we're still trapped inside the time lock, sir. The link is nothing more than a thought, an idea.
Gallifrey is in a time lock here? But the Doctor said he blew up Gallifrey. We didn’t hear about the Doctor putting Gallifrey in a time lock until “The Day of the Doctor,” but then DW doesn’t tell the story linearly anyway. Things are timey-whimey here.
“The Day of the Doctor”
In a 3rd example, in “The Day of the Doctor,” 11 Doctors, the War Doctor, and somehow the 12th Doctor (more hand waving) put Gallifrey in a time lock. Some things don’t add up here, like greenery on the floor of the barn when there’s a desert around them. Something is wrong.
Also, the scene of the War Doctor looking at the barn in the distance (red arrow, shown below) looks like a bad matte painting in relation to other quality images of Gallifrey in this episode and in “Hell Bent.” It isn’t real, and it isn’t supposed to be. The greenery suggests these were the Doctor’s memories of a time long gone.
“Hell Bent”
In a 4th example, there are problems in “Hell Bent.” Gallifrey is back in the universe, but at the end of it. While there’s hand waving here, I can accept that because we are talking about Time Lords.
However, for what we think we know in canon, there are still other problems, which I haven’t previously mentioned with “The Day of the Doctor,” and they still exist in “Hell Bent.” The inside of the barn is shown below, as the Doctor walks in.
First, the yellow arrow points to a big truck tire or, more likely, one from a tractor. That was surprising! I didn’t expect that with such an advanced society, especially in a desert. So something is off. It also looks so human.
Then, the green arrow points to the structure that represents a prison – a 6-sided figure – which is also part of the structure I saw in the 3rd Doctor story “The Ambassadors of Death.” (We examined that story’s significance in “The Empress of Mars” analysis.)
The 3rd arrow (white) points to something really odd. It’s not a normal barn structure but the hull structure of an overturned boat. No one would build a barn with timbers crafted like that.
I figured the ship was supposed to be Viking (or metaphorical Viking) when I saw “The Day of the Day” because the 11th Doctor had a Viking funeral in a boat.
Then, I got my Viking question answered, at least in part, in “Smile.” The Doctor and Bill are in the Vardy building, looking for the original colony ship:
DOCTOR: When the Vikings invaded, they used to pull their longboats out of the water, turn them upside down and live in them as houses until they'd pillaged and looted enough to build new ones.
BILL: So?
DOCTOR: You didn't see a space ship outside, did you? When the settlers first landed, they must have lived in it and built out from it, so it's still here, somewhere inside this building. Ah. (a not-perfectly-smooth-and-white wall) Bits of meteor damage. Flecks of rust. Rivets. Oh, I love rivets. A wall. A real, honest wall. Not made of tiny robots but made of any old iron.
So, does that mean the barn really is a symbol of invasion? Or is it just the symbol of the original colony ship or just a ship that landed on Gallifrey? I’ve been considering these questions.
The Setting Is Driving the Story
At the beginning of the 1st episode of the finale, the Doctor did another bootstrap paradox to go back to near the beginning of his timeline. We are witnessing a brilliant microcosm of an alternate universe and how it operates with the Black Hole of the Eye of Harmony. This setting also allows us to see an example of how the Time War works with one end of the ship in closer proximity to the Black Hole. This microcosm universe, then, shows us how time is a continuum across the ship.
The Black Hole and ship are analogous to the Black Hole and Planet in “The Impossible Planet” and “The Satan Pit.” In both the 10th and 12th Doctor episodes, the situations become desperate, and there is a rebellion. However, the rebellion in the 12th Doctor episodes is not so clear-cut.
The Master said that everyone on the ship is dying. The only way the people on Floor 1056 can survive is to rebel against squalid conditions and death by upgrading themselves to Cybermen. They are desperate to break free, building an army through forced upgrades. At least some see evolving to Cybermen as freedom.
However, the people on Floor 507 are desperate to save their children from being turned into Cybermen. They see Cybermen as slavery and death and are rebelling in their own way.
We’re at the root of the ideological war, foreshadowed since Season 2 of nuWho, which we examined in Chapter 16 “Doctor Mysterio Analysis Part 3: Ideological War for Season 10 & the Eye of Harmony.”
Heaven, Purgatory & Hell in the Alternate Universe
The differential of time between Floor 0 the Floor 1056 is an interesting number: approximately 1000 to 1001 years per day. This curious set of numbers recalls 2 Peter 3 in the New Testament:
With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day.
Therefore, Floor 0 is the Heaven Metaphor, and Floor 1056 is the Hell metaphor. Interestingly, the Doctor goes to Hell in “World Enough and Time” to get Bill back, and we saw him in a different kind of Hell in “Heaven Sent” before he brought Clara back. However, the Doctor can’t get back to metaphorical Heaven while he is alive.
The Heaven Metaphor & God’s Names
The Heaven metaphor on Floor 0 looks futuristic, especially in comparison to the rest of the ship. It’s bathed in light colors, too, as opposed to the darkness on Floor 1056. It follows the light and dark patterns that we’ve examined in multiple ways.
Allusions to God come up in several ways regarding this Heaven metaphor. Here are just a few for now.
This ship situation is analogous to the people in “The God Complex,” who don’t realize they are on a prison ship in a Star Trek holodeck-type situation. There, too, we see both a “heavenly” side where people lost their fear of being taken by the Minotaur. They were in a euphoric state, like a dream, while they eagerly awaited death. That’s in contrast to the hellish side of everything before euphoria set in, which is analogous to pre-conversion Cybermen, at least on Floor 1056.
One odd thing about the ship in this Season 10 finale is that the floors have numbers on the sky ceilings.
So I wonder what the people in this bucolic setting think of the sky with a grid, the number 507, clouds, etc. in the heavens? Is that the name of God for them? It’s a fascinating question, especially since God comes up a lot lately in DW, and many religions have multiple names for God: Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Sikhism, etc. Therefore, floor numbers as names for God seem apt, given the reference to “The God Complex” and the 1000 years per day between the 2 ends of the ship.
In fact, in the Book of Revelation in the New Testament, God is quoted as saying "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End." In “The Zygon Invasion,” the Zygons in human form are in a church that has the symbols for Alpha and Omega, shown below. And between Alpha and Omega is the Sun symbol. Missy talked about the Master burning like a Sun, and we know the Doctor does too. We’ll look at this more in a later chapter.
Baby Melody Pond is associated with Omega. And in fact, River was associated with the Church of the Papal Mainframe in “The Time of Angels” and “Flesh and Stone,” which uses an omega and what looks to be the capital Greek letter pi superimposed mostly within the omega.
Besides Christianity, if we count mythological gods, I’ve showed you a few of them, but there are a lot more that the Doctor is associated with in the subtext.
And I believe there is a reference to the Hindu god Shiva in “World Enough and Time.” After the Doctor used Venusian Aikido (a very 3rd Doctor maneuver) on Jorj, the Doctor says something interesting to Nardole’s comment:
DOCTOR: Venusian Aikido. NARDOLE: I thought you needed four arms for Venusian. DOCTOR: I've got hidden talents, as well as hidden arms.
This makes sense because Shiva is the destroyer of the universe, so he can re-create it. He is part of the Trimurti, the Hindu trinity, which includes Brahma and Vishnu. Shiva has 2 to 4 arms (and can have more) and a 3rd eye. The Doctor has a 3rd eye of sorts (red arrow) in the opening credits.
Purgatory Metaphor
Floor 507 isn’t Heaven, per se, but compared to Floor 1056 it’s much more heavenly. So 507 is like the intermediate state, relating to the Purgatory metaphor. Not everyone on Floor 507 or possibly on other floors may be considered to be in Purgatory, although they could be.
I’m using the metaphor for those people who have died previously, like the Doctor and Bill, who are, according to Wikipedia, in an intermediate state after physical death in which some of those ultimately destined for heaven must first, according to the Catechism of the Catholic Church "undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven," holding that "certain offenses can be forgiven in this age, but certain others in the age to come."
Afterlife purification is not unique to Catholicism. Other religions, like Judaism, have something similar.
BTW, it's clear to me that DW is using the Purgatory metaphor to apply to several other characters, too. We'll examine them in a future chapter.
The Doctor Earned His Wings With all the allusions to God, Heaven, and It’s a Wonderful Life (“The Eaters of Light” analysis), it’s clear the Doctor really is a mirror of Clarence the Angel, 2nd Class, who was trying to earn his wings. For example, Missy, the Doctor’s project, did turn toward the light at the end.
After the Doctor died, he earned one wing to Heaven, as the image below shows (red arrow). His coat spread out under his right arm showing the red lining serves as a wing.
After Heather and Bill move the Doctor to the TARDIS, we see him lying on the floor, having earned both wings (yellow arrows). There is also a divine-type light (red arrow) near his head. The lining is easier to see in the episode than it is here.
Heather & How the Doctor Earned His 2nd Wing
Before the Doctor died, he and Bill parted without saying much to each other, although they should have. It was a mirror of Clara and the Doctor before she died. Here’s the lack of communication problem again.
However, Bill did say one thing:
BILL: But, hey er, you know how I'm usually all about women and, and kinda people my own age.
DOCTOR: Yeah? BILL: Glad you knew that.
She put in an order, so to speak, for her love interest.
As we examined in “The Pilot” analysis, Heather was the Doctor, so she had to come back.
Either she is a projection of him or she is a part of his being. The Doctor is not just male, so he can project either a male or female being.
In fact, she is wearing a ring, a symbol of the 12th Doctor, around her neck, shown below (red arrow).
There is a precedent for this in Classic Who. Time Lords could project a version of themselves, and we looked at this in the “Knock Knock” analysis with the 3rd Doctor story “Planet of the Spiders.” According to the TARDIS Wikia, Cho Je only existed either as a future projection of K'anpo Rimpoche (the Time Lord abbot of the meditation center) or a creation of his mind, which Rimpoche used as a proxy. At the end, K’anpo died and regenerated into Cho Je.
The other possibility for Heather was put forth in the 5th Doctor story “Kinda,” which we looked at in the TPEW analysis. Since Bill uses “kinda” when talking to the Doctor in the dialogue above, the Doctor’s soul probably passed onto Heather, the way the old blind woman in “Kinda” passed her soul into the young girl who was her companion. They operated like the Holy Trinity where 3 operated as One, but in that case 2 operated as One while the old woman was alive.
Either way, they end up as beings of pure consciousness, who can manifest in human form.
After the Wings While we see Heather as a type of regenerated Doctor, the 12th Doctor has to come back to life because he has not finished the rescue. And he has multiple faces that have to get redemption, which we’ll look at that more in a later chapter.
The 12th Doctor’s face we see at the end of the episode when he is in the icy environment with the 1st Doctor should be back at the beginning, happening earlier in time than what we see on Floor 507. We’ll examine the symbolism on Floor 507, and how this relates to going back to the beginning.
This Doctor’s face hasn’t earned his wings yet. The other did, suggesting that he did remember what Clara meant to him. However, what does that mean for this other version on ice? That’s a question I’m considering.
Hell Metaphor, the Satan Pit & the Time War
We’ve seen more of the hellish side of the ship than the heavenly. Certainly, Floor 1056 represents the Satan Pit and a living nightmare. The squalid conditions and nasty emissions outside the hospital are a reference to “Gridlock” with similar conditions in the New New York Undercity.
And the gridlock has to change in the Library metaphor.
Because conditions in this part of the ship are driving people to desperate measures and time is going faster in Hell, we get to see how beings from the Hell metaphor are going to overtake Heaven, Purgatory, and the children, unless something is done. We have to see a resolution in the Christmas Special, and I’ll talk more about this in another chapter.
DOCTOR: We can't go back to the bridge. We can only go four or five floors up at the most. The further we move up the ship, the slower time moves for us and the faster it moves for the Cybermen. By the time we get to the bridge, they'll have had thousands of years to work out how to stop us. There is no safe way to get back to the Tardis. It's a mathematical impossibility.
The Ood server in “The Impossible Planet” expresses what is happening here:
OOD: The Beast and his Armies shall rise from the Pit to make war against God.
So we have a war against God on Floor 507? Yes, in a way. This is more foreshadowing for Christmas, which we’ll examine.
In fact, Razor said something interesting in “World Enough and Time” when Bill wanted to get back to the Doctor:
RAZOR: You do not understand the dangers. Many years ago, there was an expedition to floor 507, the largest of the solar farms. BILL: And? RAZOR: Silence. They never came back. There is something up there. And we must be strong.
We saw what was on 507, but that doesn’t explain why someone couldn’t get to the bridge. If those Cybermedics could do it to get Bill, they could do it again.
So there’s something else going on, and the subtext shows more. We’ll talk about that in another chapter.
Dante’s Divine Comedy, 9 Circles of Hell, Ice & Foreshadowing
The way this universe is set up, I can’t help but think of Dante Alighieri's 14th-century epic poem Divine Comedy. In fact, it most likely gives us foreshadowing for Christmas. The Divine Comedy comes in 3 parts: Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso. Wikipedia says, “As an allegory, the Divine Comedy represents the journey of the soul toward God, with the Inferno describing the recognition and rejection of sin.” Dante’s work, among several others, has influenced the Christian concept of Hell.
Since this Library metaphor universe has become a very hellish place, the Inferno part is rather fitting as it describes the metaphorically fiery place of Hell. Wikipedia continues
The Inferno tells the journey of Dante through Hell, guided by the ancient Roman poet Virgil. In the poem, Hell is depicted as nine concentric circles of torment located within the Earth; it is the "realm ... of those who have rejected spiritual values by yielding to bestial appetites or violence, or by perverting their human intellect to fraud or malice against their fellowmen".
When I saw Floor 900 being punched through by Cybermen, shown below, I immediately thought of the 9th Circle of Hell.
9 Circles, Satan & Ice
The Master is sitting in Hell at the beginning of “World Enough and Time,” but it’s Floor 1056. While there are 9 circles in Dante’s Hell, the last has a depth. Wikipedia says
Dante’s Hell is divided into nine circles, the ninth circle being divided further into four rings, their boundaries only marked by the depth of their sinners' immersion in the ice; Satan sits in the last ring, Judecca. It is in the fourth ring of the ninth circle, where the worst sinners, the betrayers to their benefactors, are punished. Here, these condemned souls, frozen into the ice, are completely unable to move or speak and are contorted into all sorts of fantastical shapes as a part of their punishment.
Ice is interesting, especially because the 12th Doctor ends up there at the end of “The Doctor Falls” where the 1st Doctor is. And a bunch of subtext shows that this would be the 9th Circle of Hell.
Before we examine part of that in this chapter, I want to show you the other circles because the Doctor, Master, and Missy would fit into quite a few of them. The Master would fit into all of them, including living like a king, being a dictator, and believing Missy’s soul wouldn’t continue on in some other form. According to Wikipedia:
1. First Circle (Limbo) - The first circle contains the unbaptized and the virtuous pagans, who, although not sinful, did not accept Christ.
2. Second Circle (Lust) - These carnal offenders are condemned for allowing their appetites to sway their reason.
3. Third Circle (Gluttony) – This circle contains those who overindulge in food, drink, and other worldly pleasures. At the same time, they have the inability to see others lying nearby, representing the gluttons’ selfishness and coldness.
4. Fourth Circle (Greed) – These offenders are divided into two groups – those who hoarded possessions, and those who lavishly squandered them
5. Fifth Circle (Wrath) – These offenders are here, being furious and sullen
6. Sixth Circle (Heresy) – This circle contains those who say "the soul dies with the body"
7. Seventh Circle (Violence) – There is a Minotaur in this circle that gnaws flesh. Those who commit violence against neighbors, self (suicides), God, art, and nature end up here.
8. Eighth Circle (Fraud) – There are several types of fraudulent and malicious offenders here. Those who deliberately exploited the passions of others and and drove them to serve their own interests; those who abuse and corrupt language to play upon others' desires and fears; those who made money for themselves out of what belongs to God; those who are fortune tellers, diviners, astrologers, and other false prophets; and those who are corrupt politicians. Also, there are hypocrites, thieves, counselors of fraud, sowers of discord, and falsifiers.
9. Ninth Circle (Treachery) – People here are guilty of treachery against those with whom they had special relationships. 1st Ring - Traitors to their Kindred: for example, Cain murdered his own brother 2nd Ring - Traitors to their Country: for example, Antenor, a Trojan soldier who betrayed his city to the Greeks. 3rd Ring - Traitors to their Guests: for example, Ptolemy invited his father-in-law Simon Maccabaeus and his sons to a banquet and then killed them 4th Ring - Traitors to their Lords and Benefactors: for example, Judas Iscariot betrayed Jesus
Center of Hell – Satan “In the very centre of Hell, condemned for committing the ultimate sin (personal treachery against God), is the Devil, referred to by Virgil as Dis (the Roman god of the underworld; the name ‘Dis’ was often used for Pluto in antiquity, such as in Virgil's Aeneid). The arch-traitor, Lucifer was once held by God to be fairest of the angels before his pride led him to rebel against God, resulting in his expulsion from Heaven. Lucifer is a giant, terrifying beast trapped waist-deep in the ice, fixed and suffering.”
Heresy came up in “Dark Water” after Danny Pink died. People were getting cremated even though Dr. Chang said people’s souls lived on after death. In fact, Missy is acting like Pluto in “Dark Water” and its sequel, “Death in Heaven,” as keeper of the Matrix data slice, collecting souls.
So Missy would be sitting in the Center of Hell, too, at some point, but she did change.
What about the Doctor? In “The Lie of the Land” analysis, we looked at the concept that a face of the Doctor was a Trojan Horse. In fact, a toy Trojan Horse shows up in “The Doctor Falls.” It’s hard to see, but there is a Trojan Horse on wheels, shown below (red arrow), next to the Doctor.
The Doctor has a lot of sins to atone for, which we’ll examine more in a future chapter.
So the Doctor ends up on ice, most likely symbolizing Dante’s 9th Circle in Hell. He needs rescued.
Also, he would prefer to commit suicide than regenerate. He’s terrified of changing into something unknown, especially after all he’s been through. Those are Steven Moffat’s words. I can certainly understand the Doctor’s sentiment. He’ll lose part of himself and possibly not remember the lessons. I certainly wouldn’t want to have to repeat those lessons, if I were him.
Since he is willing to commit violence against himself, that may be another reason why we keep seeing numerous references to “The God Complex,” referencing the Minotaur from Dante’s 7th Circle of Hell. That would make sense.
Also, since Danny Pink killed his young self in the war (we examined that in Chapter 18: "Doctor Mysterio Analysis Part 5: Rescuing Children & Missy/Master"), that would be the 9th Circle of Hell, which would be another reason the Doctor has ended up on ice. But that may not be all…
“Fire and Ice” & Perishing Twice
Since the Doctor has to die again, the ice motif may also be an inspiration from one of Robert Frost’s most popular poems and may give us some more foreshadowing:
Fire and Ice
Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I’ve tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
We saw Hell and the metaphorical fire, so now we get to see the ice. It’s interesting that hate is associated with ice and the Doctor has been described as being fire and ice.
At the end, he certainly hates the thought of regenerating.
So ice is an appropriate setting in more than one way, besides tying in the Mondasian episode from 1966. However, there’s more to the ice part beyond this, and we’ll explore that in another chapter. There are several important tie-ins to the ice and hatred concept that we need to examine because this foreshadows Christmas.

@ashes-and-dust tagged me (eons ago) in a thing that starts personal and then degenerates into tv show stuff?? and... well here it is
1.) Why did you choose your URL?
You must all know this by now, lol. Okay so 1-I’m French Canadian, a popular insult for us by the English is “Frog” and I highly believe in claiming back insults.2-The first online url I had (well second. I had wolves has my special interest back when I was 12 so ‘wolfy136′ was the first, fleeting url I got) was after I joinned the HP fandom, with my favourite character, thus Lunard136/Lunard1 was born (that’s moony. my wolf special interest faded in the background but it’s still there to show lol). I started going to other websites than HP ones and I was starting to feel like that url wasn’t good for those so I thought long and hard about something I could be me and not fandom related so I wouldn’t have to change it again (because change is good but I hate it) and I came up with “Froggy”. Only to find it was used already. I was tired of the old 136 so I decided to had something about me in the url, something about my temper (I’m definitely a fire sign) and added the “bangbang” because I catch like a barrel of powder. (you dirty mind you if you thought I’d use it as a sex reference! Shame on you! except lol yeah I knew how it sounded and I was fine with letting people who don’t know me think I’m a nympho. what better way to hide I’m not really all that interested in sex, which is weird and not normal, right? right.)
2.) What’s your middle name?
Very few Quebecois have one, those who are afflicted by the old tradition, weather because their parents are religious or because it’s a tradition and nobody questions it have (for girls) Mary Godmother’sName FirstName LastName (for boys) Joseph Godfather’sName FirstName LastName. That’s the format and absolutely nobody goes by the first two to the point that my passport doesn’t even show them because I was told not to put them in if I’m not using them (???!!!? but okay!) anyway my are Mary Diane Kristine LastName
3.) If you could own a fairytale/fictional pet, what would it be?
I’d love a tiny dragon? I’m pretty sure I said “I want a X now!” a few onth ago but I can’t remember what it was... But honestly if I can, in my life, befriend a corvid that’s like. the dream goal. It has been for ever.
4.) Favourite colour?
hmmm I really love orange. every shade but especially the dark burnt one. I also like dark green, dark blue, dark teal and dark purple a lot? I’ll go with orange
5.) Favourite song?
That’s.... not something I can answer. Honestly how can you pick one? IDK I really love In Hell I’ll be in Good Company these days? I really love Phillip Glass’ Violin Concerto No.1 2nd Movement if you prefer no voice. Also Dream Fragment from the Chrono Cross OST because I’m a sucker for music box.
Here are a few of my Spotify playlist, for those interested.
A Little Bit of Everything is pretty much all the songs I like and remember to put on spotify (if spotify has them. They lack in Quebecois music)
Music Rec is songs that you might not know about that exist and you should listen to them, but this doesn’t get updated very often
RN is the playlist that keeps changing. My current obsessions are on that one
In the Summertime are songs for a nice warm summer day with a light breeze and a hammock (or something. maybe a few friend in the backyard and a beer.)
And Sunday Mornings is the playlist I’m listening to mainly on sunday mornings (It’s playing right now) because it fits the vibe of a sunday morning when you start your coffee and still might have an eye glued down
6.) What are your top three fandoms?
errr I’ll go with HP, 1D (*glares at @ashes-and-dust*) and....hmm. I’m not really active in any of the others anymore. but I guess Sherlock?(though Pacific Rim or Cabin Pressure also fit third place but I think I still read more sherlock fic than I do PR or CP)
7.) Why do you enjoy Tumblr?
This hellsite is my main place for interacting with sensible human beings. I also LOVE *those* posts. you the ones where one person asks a questions/ places a random thought and then.... it just. takes a life of its own? and everyone knows them? The Guam Cookie post is one. The many Aliens finds Humans Weird also. but then there’s the smaller ones like just. They are exactly the kind of stuff I’d be saying with my (ex? maybe?)friend in Rimousky like you say something, and they add something in a deadpanned way that is bviously exagerated/insane and then you add on it and they add on it until you are at the stage that you won’t be buy mayo because, really, having to marry someone from an island so you could get away with murder is much too much effort. That’s why I love tumblr.
PICK YOUR 5 FAVORITE TV SHOWS AND ANSWER THE QUESTIONS:
ugh I very rarely watch tv anymore these are hard.
1. Merlin
2. Doctor Who (until season 5/6 anyway. Moffat killed it)
3. Torchwood
4. The X-Files (haven’t seen the reboot but I’d love to!)
5. ...... Sherlock (I guess? But I still haven’t watch the last xmas special nor the last season? Moffat killed it?)
1. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHARACTER IN 2?
hmmmmm..... *shakes the Ponds, Martha Jones and Dona Noble in her hand to see which will get out* I’m going to go with Dona. I’m not so in your face, but I really relate with her and she had an awesome friendship with 10, not afraid to give him a good earful if he went overboard.
2. WHO IS YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE CHARACTER IN 1?
Shit idk. I mean Uther and Morgana where mean shit but I loved their characters for what they were..... I’d say between Uther and Mordred? idk.
3. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE EPISODE OF 4?
Oh shit. Dude do you have any idea how many episode there is of the xfiles?? I’m going to go with the one on the boat, because that’s the one that popped into my head right now (immediately followed by that black and white one when Mulder meets the Gunmen for the first time... that CELL PHONE OMG) and any moment when Scully and Mulder have SASS going on.
4. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SEASON OF 5?
The first season is the best without a doubt. I’ve loved the second season but in the first one the story were even more concentrated on one story per episode and it was very well thought off and they didn’t overdo it yet, which they tented to do afterwards, as well as letting more episode be one story and not following canon anymore. I’m actually sadden at my lack of consistency at following Elementary.
5. WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE RELATIONSHIP IN 3?
Oh. er... Ianto/Jack. but. like. I don’t like to think about that because of children of the earth.
6. WHO IS YOUR ANTI-RELATIONSHIP IN 1?
I know it sounds weird but I really see Arthur and Gwen as bromance who agreed to marry because throne? They have a great chemistry but I just don’t buy it.
7. HOW LONG HAVE YOU WATCHED 4?
The first episode I’ve seen was on TQS with the french dubbed version of the first episode we see the guy that can dislocate every bones in his body to crawl in small places. then I got hooked and rented the VHS of the series, bought books of the series, the official magazines, unofficial biographies (my gosh is the internet cheaper) and watched every episode (at some point switching in the English version on Fridays) until Mulder got abducted. Tried to watch that season but didn’t care to not miss an episode... then I just... forgot to tune in. so that’d be since.... according to WIKI the first episodes in French were in 1994 and “squeeze” is the third one.
8. HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED IN 3?
Because of Doctor Who.
9. WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE ACTOR IN 2?
Grahhhhh okay I’m going to go renewed series because fhjdsahlsb and it’s still hard but I think I’ll go with David Tenant. Tough Karen Gillan is good too. Oh! fuck and John Simm fuck I forgot John Simm and Life on Mars! damn. Okay John Simm
10. WHICH SHOW DO YOU PREFER: 1, 4 OR 5?
You drive a hard bargain. I’ll go with the X-Files; 4
11. WHICH SHOW HAVE YOU SEEN MORE EPISODES OF? 1 OR 3?
as in proportionally? because I’ve see all of them, but I *think* merlin has more episodes? Though I’ve watch Torchwood more often I think?
12. IF YOU COULD BE ANYONE FROM 4, WHO WOULD YOU BE?
I’m not sure I’d like to be anyone on the x-files that sounds like a very dangerous life. although wait no not true! one of the gunmen! They have the coolest job in the series.
13. HOW WOULD YOU KILL OFF YOUR FAVOURITE CHARACTER IN 3?
*stares* Not like that.
14. WOULD A 2/3 CROSSOVER WORK?
HAHAHA well. YES, mainly because IT IS a thing between DW and Torchwood.
15. PAIR TWO CHARACTERS IN 2 THAT WOULD MAKE AN UNLIKELY BUT STRANGELY OKAY COUPLE.
The Master and Donna? If, you know, the Master got his murdering tendencies in check. idk I’m not good at pairing people. I pick and chose those who exist in the fandom.
16. OVERALL, WHICH SHOW HAD A BETTER CAST: 3 OR 5?
Damn.... I mean Andrew Scott alone.... but then it got cringey... but I don’t particularly like Gwen but I’m pretty sure it’s not the casting..... I’ll go with Torchwood.
17. WHICH SHOW HAS A BETTER SOUNDTRACK: 1, 4 OR 5?
I do not know Merlin’s Soundtrack well enough to comment on it and I think the X-files’ is pretty lacking, but Sherlock has some very good music, the Irene piece is on of my favourite.
Blergh. I don’t want to tag because lazy. go ahead and give me the answers, though. Especially the music ones I’m always interested in finding new music!
