There seems to be a general malaise on most of Tumblr about TikTok getting banned in the United States.

I understand the problems, "brain rot", whatever but- A government banning a social media app that opened the world for many people is legitimately scary and upsetting. Say what you want but, there are MANY global and local issues that would not have gotten the same traction, recognition, and outreach without TikTok.

And then add to this that Meta/Facebook was one the largest lobbyists working to get TikTok banned... Like- I think folks should be more concerned about the implications of what this means, especially since the ban goes into effect the day before inauguration.

Okay. But you're not killing cops or firebombing government offices. You are posting on a dying microblogging website to a carefully-curated echo chamber that has radicalized itself into thinking that taking the absolute most extreme position on any subject is praxis but that anyone discussing the most practical way to effect actual change is your sworn enemy. so something ive seen going on recently is that people are attacking others for not speaking up about palestine because they want to stay out of politics and/or are uninformed on the topic.

i think 1. you should let people stay out of politics and keep their mouth shut!!! people have all the right in the world to stay out of politcs if they so choose. 2. there are other MAJOR issues going on in the world. and im not at all downplaying the tragedies going on in palestine at the moment but we cant JUST focus on palestine. we need to focus on other important issues too!! like pontential trans genocide, or whats going on in the congo, or rampant child slavery in parts of africa!! we cant have all our attention on palestine with so much other horrid shit going on!!! and once again for clarification, I AM NOT DOWNPLAYING PALESTINE. we absolutely should keep speaking out about the atrocities done by the israeli government and other governments supporting the "war" (genocide) in palestine.

I mean I get that’s it’s not the only contributing factor, but I’m curious exactly how much of the shelter dog over-population problem is actually due to poor dog ownership/management vs the housing crisis and economical stress. I’d be willing to bet by investing in social programs that give people the resources they need to care for their pets (cough cough affordable and free housing cough cough) that the amount of pets in shelters would dramatically drop. We can all sit here pointing fingers and screaming at each other until we are blue in the face, but if the owners basic needs are not being met, how can we hold them to a basic standard for their pets?

Since the US is pretty much the driving force behind advancements in plane tech, any chance you guys over there can get this utter legend to push for better protection of wheelchairs during flight - maybe a little compartment where they can be both restrained properly and not me damaged by unrestrained luggage? Suspended from the ceiling.

There will be a safe and easy way to do it. The airlines and manufacturers just need to be forced to look after us better.

And in the meantime, no disputes about damages. If a chair or other mobility aid is damaged during transit, they pay for a new like-for-like to be made immediately, to the person's current needed specifications. Yes, it might be $10k plus, but that's the airline's problem. They make enough money to cover it, and they're taking away someone's freedom by breaking a mobility aid.

No one should have to fight ridiculous bureaucracy over their ability to move across the ground.

"This week, the Department of Transportation (DOT) announced a new rule requiring airlines to make bathrooms more accessible for disabled people. All new single-aisle aircraft will be fitted with fully-accessible lavatories.

Most flights inside the United States are single-aisle and as technology has improved, they are used more frequently for long flights, including coast-to-coast trips that can last as long as six hours. Double-aisle plans are already subject to the regulation but are primarily used for international flights.

Out Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg announced the new regulations, saying, “Traveling can be stressful enough without worrying about being able to access a restroom; yet today, millions of wheelchair users are forced to choose between dehydrating themselves before boarding a plane or avoiding air travel altogether.” ...

The secretary has made it a priority to improve service on airlines during his tenure. In 2022, six airlines were forced to pay millions of dollars in refunds to hundreds of thousands of customers and were also fined millions for causing the issues. The department’s firm stance on the side of customers has continued through this year after multiple companies have had meltdowns, stranding thousands of travelers.

All planes delivered to airlines starting in 2026 must include several upgrades. Planes already in service will not need to be retrofitted unless the plane is renovated.

“These aircraft must have at least one lavatory of sufficient size to permit a passenger with a disability (with the help of an assistant, if necessary) to approach, enter, and maneuver within the aircraft lavatory, to use all lavatory facilities, and leave by means of the aircraft’s onboard wheelchair if necessary,” the DOT said in a statement.

Accessible faucets and controls, grab bars, accessible call buttons and door locks, minimum obstruction to the passage of an onboard wheelchair, and an available visual barrier for privacy are also required upgrades."
