Oh boy. I have a lot to say on this. I 1000% think that one of the biggest issues in AWI reenactment is the failure to reach the younger generation and I also wish the article had talked more about this and how it intersects with the inclusion of historically marginalized groups within the hobby.
I’ll put it this way: as of 2024, the BAR has an article in their constitution that prohibits women in ranks. As a young, non-male, and only sometimes white-passing reenactor, this has caused me issues in the past. People from the BAR have complained about me—a young, fairly new, dedicated reenactor—being on the field as a musician. Now, I’ve had the good fortune to be part of a unit with significant influence in the hobby, who have gone to bat for me in these instances and allowed me to feel relatively safe coming to these events, but I still can’t take up a musket at a BAR event if I want to. Over the past year I have become acutely aware that if it weren’t for the fact that I do music and not hat company, I would not be able to interpret at these events in the way I have repeatedly proven myself capable of doing.
So you have the primary overarching association responsible for organizing large-scale AWI reenactments literally denying interested, dedicated people from the younger generation the opportunity to participate in the hobby. And this is just one official organization—this is to say nothing of the culture. At the end of the day, sexism, racism, homophobia and transphobia is rampant in these environments. I do think the culture is slowly improving with time, but still, there are spaces where I do not feel safe in the hobby, and I spend a lot of time considering what my future as a reenactor might look like if I ever decide to medically transition, for example. My love for this hobby means I put up with a lot, even within my own unit, but I cannot fault other people who take one look at this mess and decide it’s not worth it. Of course there are going to be less reenactors. If individual units and the overarching organizations are going to actively resist a new generation of young living historians, interest in the hobby is going to waver.
I also think there’s an important distinction to make between so-called “progressive” units and a broader sense of historical accuracy, because ultimately reenactment is a hobby. I strongly believe that no issue of historical accuracy should take precedent over actual issues of discrimination (if we were going to really pursue historical accuracy, we would be excluding probably 90% of the reenactment community as it is!). But I also believe that the spirit of this hobby is one that is educational and authentic: second to having fun and staying safe, of course, I think the priority should be pursuing as accurate of an impression as you can in the meantime. “Progressive” units often get kind of a bad rap but ultimately I think they have the right idea. They’re what’s going to keep this hobby relevant as an educational tool and pursuit, as opposed to just being a bunch of grown men running around playing war with each other. Progressive units are, in my opinion, the future of this hobby. And yet a lot of more conservative units have this weird resistance to this philosophy simply because they don’t… want to have to adapt to what it means, I suppose. But I really do think that if that philosophy prevails, we won’t have educational reenactment—it’s possible we won’t have much in terms of reenactment at all. Ultimately I want to believe this, too, will improve in time, but the fact that we have to violently contest, for example, whether British soldiers had to shave (which they did) just because some reenactors desperately want an excuse not to… does not bode well for garnering interest from historians and enthusiasts in time for the 250th.
Anyway, that’s been my experience. I should probably stop talking about this because I think about it constantly and could go on forever. But that’s my (admittedly rather scathing) two cents on why this is the case.
Who has Wall Street Journal access I heard there’s an article about 250th reenactors and I need the tea

So do you own a chicken now? Or did you find a farm for it?
we snuck her into the coop while all the chickens were sleeping and this morning she got up with the rest of them and they all had breakfast together peacefully, so she seems to have integrated with our existing flock without issue

No one should be obligated to feel sympathy for a bunch of rich people who are probably dead after spending a grotesque amount of money doing something stupidly risky for no practical reason but that they’re rich and bored,
BUT
I do think it’s fucked up that some of you guys seem to think it’s a moral failing to feel anything but glee and delight at a bunch of people, one of which is 19, suffering one of the most horrific deaths imaginable that I wouldn’t wish on my worst enemy.

People really need to give Steel Wool a break sometimes, man- They messed up with Security Breach and now people act like EVERYTHING wrong with modern fnaf is all exclusively their fault when it's really not.
#Chip Chatter#especially when the issue literally WASN'T ATTACHED TO THEM AT ALL!!!#People really just say shit I stg#there's probably one person who'll think this is about one particular post#this post is a culmination of things#the twitter bs going on right now about modern lore and some people pinning all the blame on steel wool even though they don't write the#lore. A conversation I had yesterday with some people where one person kept blaming and shitting on SWS for the smallest of things#The fact that any time I try to talk about a small issue with modern fnaf in any fucking way I'll have people tell me shit like#“it's steel wool what were you expecting” regardless of if the problem was even their fault#and just generally people giving Steel Wool so much shit and most of the time it being over fucking nothing#Like I GET that Steel Wool fumbled with Security Breach oh my fucking god that was almost 2 years ago can we MOVE ON!!!!#They're improving!!! They fumbled one game and a lot of the factors involved weren't their fault anyways!!! Can we give them a fucking#break and just move on with the rest of the series already!!! I'm so sick of hearing people complain about SB when it's been almost 2 years#and Steel Wool is showing nothing but signs of improvement#Cough uhm anyways#of course you can criticize Steel Wool and I'm not saying they've never done anything wrong ever#just don't needlessly shit on them especially if the problem was out of their hands.#Rant over I'm going to bed

okay so the person who spoke about the cyn x anyone except for n thing caused me to ramble in the tags so i just discarded that and decided to put them here
anyway, yeah i dont see those ships often actually. probably for good reason, probably just since not many people ship her with anyone. anyway, i've seen one or two cyn x uzi fanfics on ao3 actually, probably one that was cyn x j or cyn x v? don't remember clearly honestly.
anyway, personally, i'd probably just avoid those ships just to be safe. considering that cyn is n's younger sister, younger being the keyword there, and we don't really know how much younger exactly. if shes only a year younger? ehhh sure, as long as it isn't an age gap of like, 2-5 years, yknow?
if she is much younger than that, then yeah. i'd say it really depends on the writer's interpretation of her age, i guess? if they make it clear that she isn't way younger than the person she's shipped with, aka 2-5 years as said above, i think it'd be fine, but then again, my morals are messed up in some places so who knows.
hope you enjoyed my 12 AM ramblings

They would have to do a lot of work for me to believe that Ray could be that affected by Sand that anything to do with him could make him break down that way. But we really do seem to be zooming through the trailer scenes.
Mostly I'm curious how the fighting happens, and in what order. Sand seems more miserable to me in both of those, and with what we're getting so far that makes sense.
The order of the fighting is also a big question for me…I guess it all comes back to just how long it will take Sand’s patience to break. Right now, I think Ray is doing a hell of a job challenging the barriers of their “friendship,” and we see Sand question him about it before ultimately giving in. The puppy dog eyes are working now, but at what point will they seriously have to have a conversation about what their relationship is?
Something I find interesting—Ray and Sand have good communication so far. Even next ep, the preview alludes to some sort of discussion about feelings. They might brush past things now and disguise any true feelings behind the guise of “teasing,” but it hasn’t yet turned into a substantial conflict. I’m really interested to see where and when their issues will arise; will it all be related to Mew? We saw some of that already last ep. While I don’t think Sand will hold that against Ray, I can see a pattern forming that could lead to one of the fights from the trailer.
Might be totally off, but as for me, I’m gonna guess that the fight in the street happens before the fight at Sand’s apartment…they’re both very emotionally charged, but the apartment fight seems to me like something we could expect later on, especially with Sand’s line: “You think I have no dignity?” It feels like a purging of emotions that have been building for awhile.

Sometimes I get a bit ticked about the whole "invisible Canada" thing, but I went to a visiting scholar lecture about the Battle of the North Atlantic in WW2 from a British academic this morning, and he verbatim said: "Canada isn't involved enough it makes a difference." And the friend I went with pats my shoulder like, "I'm sure you guys did everything that you could do."
If that isn't the most concise summation of general opinions of Atlantic history I've ever seen, I'll never see a better one.

From the photo album of Lord Arthur Kirkland- Amelia, Smith College, 1883
Historical Note: In 1866, the first all women-baseball team was formed at Vassar College. While this first team, and the many that followed, never lasted long due to outside pressures related to fears that such "manly" activities would harm the female reproductive system, many unofficial teams began to pop-up at the women's college of the Eastern United States. One such team was formed at Smith College in 1883. For many of these early sport pioneers, the uniform consisted of wool dresses that went from either the ankle to just above the knee. Often teams would personalize them with embroidery and other design choices.
