FFxivWrite '24 - 29 (Free Prompt)
Caranar was having serious regrets about agreeing to any of this.
He eyed Beef, who seemed to be having a fine time browsing the costumes provided in Milalla sizes, and then stared daggers at the promoter in his finely tailored suit. No doubt he'd swindled Beef into participating, which had in turn led Beef to seek Caranar's help. Meaning neither of them had much choice in the matter.
Beef held out some glittery, tight-fitting garment that was as gaudy as everything else Caranar could see at that moment.
The promoter promptly pounced on it. "Why yes, I think that will suit you quite nicely!" Of course he did. "Has anything caught your eye yet, Mr. Caranar? Any costume you feel showcases your inner fighter?"
"I don't give a shit." Caranar said flatly.
If the promoter was put off, he didn't show it as he went back to browsing the rack. "Hrmm, with an attitude like yours, we could easily market you as a heel fighter. We can even leverage your opinion that the use of beast souls for entertainment is immoral." He continued on, muttering to himself more than Caranar. "Some dark leathers with plenty of eye-catching studs ought to suffice..."
The promoter picked out a matching silver mask that covered the majority of Beef's face, obscuring his identity, and a hat, mask, and uniform that fit the motif of what he had planned for Caranar. In contrast to Beef's, Caranar's costume left little to the imagination.
As the two went through the process of getting dressed, Caranar's patience continued to fray at the edges. The spectacle of it all put him in mind of Ishgard's 'trials by combat'. What a laughably transparent practice - nothing but a way to satisfy the lords and laides' lust for their lessers' blood. Halone was no more likely to be in those halls than in his bedchambers.
This Arcadion was no different. Something to gain; something to hide. But at least the souls of Ishgard's supposed heretics could rest in the aetherial sea once they had been cheated out of their pitiable lives and cast into the gutter.
Most of them, anyway.
"That scowl on your face tells me you're already getting into character!"
Caranar didn't move more than a slight shift in his posture, but his presence loomed over the promoter with malice. "If you're lying about this deal of ours, you'll only have a short time to regret it."
"Oh, please. In this business, the one guarantee is business. In lieu of our standard arrangement, we will release the souls you would be earning with each match from our employ as you retain neither account nor regulator for their use. Any ethical concerns are secondary. Though I might add, you would normally be paid whether you win or lose, but due to your personal abstentions..." the promoter struggled to find a delicate way of putting it, "if you lose, you will simply be dead. But you won't need to worry about that, I'm sure."
Caranar didn't need to be told as much. If the Alexandrians' trained military hadn't posed a problem, he doubted some puffed up showmen would fare much better. He'd be damned if either of them were to die here.
"Any jobber can become a champion with enough..." The promoter trailed off, clearly trying to keep the two engaged.
"Training?" Beef offered.
"...Spin." The promoter replied. "And you two aren't just any no-name upstarts, either! You already have a following around Solution 9, though a small one, admittedly."
There was a short, rapid knock at the greenroom door.
"Ah, I hope you're ready to cut your first promo together!"
What?
Beef hopped down from his stool as the promoter went to meet and greet the film crew, a gaggle of outrunners. Their movements followed the promoter's blathering for the benefit of some unseen audience.
"And here they are! The Arcadion's newest challengers - both handpicked outsiders from beyond the dome! Like a bolt from the black: The Dark Dragon!! And his mysterious understudy: The Starling Silver!!"
What?
The promoter paused for a brief few moments, no doubt to allow time for inaudible cheering and applause.
"Now, do you have anything you want to say?"
Beef immediately stepped up to the outrunner hovering at Milalla-level. With the mask on and all but the area around his mouth exposed, it was utterly impossible to tell what expression he wore on his face. Regardless, he stared into the device intently for some time.
Eventually, the promoter keyed in to the high likelihood that Beef would never say anything at all, and did his best to work with what little material he'd been given. "Ooh, how alluring, how mysterious! What handsome, stoic soul lies beneath that still and silent mask!? I'm afraid aught will be left to your imaginations to tell!" he then turned the outrunners on Caranar. "What about you, Dark Dragon? Anything to tell the crowd gathered out there; the audience back home?"
"Yeah I got something to say." More than they bargained for, even. Caranar grabbed at the nearest outrunner and spoke directly into its digital face, just shy of shouting. "Every single one of you out there fucking disgusts me. After I tear your beloved fighters to pieces, I'm shutting this entire shithole down." He then shoved the outrunner out of his way and made for the door.
"Ohhohoho, such lurid language will have our censors working overtime! I can just hear the chorus of boos already!"

The Saint Catherines Fundraiser, Pub Quiz and Open Mic Night
After the location recce, we were having an issue as a group with our funding. We had much less than we expected to have and there was little time remaining until our shoot and we knew we needed more money than we had to make the film. So despite Orla's incredible efforts and organisation expertise the money just wasn't coming to the extent that we had planned for on our crowdfunder.
We talked as a group and after attending Oj Tato's fundraiser Katie and I were keen to organise a fundraiser of our own. This was something we had both wanted previously but were unsure if we would have the time to do it, but seeing Oj Tato's night we felt inspired to do it. Orla and Jack as our co-producers amongst so many other roles, on different films as well, had so many things on their plate that it made sense for us to help out extra and make the fundraiser happen so that they had something less to worry about and think about. I took this role as lead organiser, so to say because as DOP, Katie still had more to do than I did in preproduction.
Upon Katie's suggestion of getting in touch with The Three Sisters and them not replying to her email, I took matters further and emailed them as well as called them immediately after and thus secured the venue, which we could hire for free as students and solidified our fundriaser's timeframe and an estimated capacity for the event.
I then put together a running order which was as follows:
Doors Open: 7pm
Start: 8pm Katie and Orla introduce the project Screen Proof of Concept (Test Shoot): 8:10pm
Talks by Charities: 8:20pm ⁃ Sexpression and Sex on Campus
Pub Quiz: 9pm-10:30pm ⁃ Rounds: 1) Film and TV, 2) Women in History, 3) Music and 4) Physical Challenge
Open Mic: 10:30pm ⁃ Open to all to participate
End/Doors Close: 00:00
I also made an Eventbrite and created an account on Square: Point for Sale, so that we could sell tickets, merch and artwork at the door.
Here is what the Eventbrite looked like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The photo right above this is the beautiful poster that Katie designed for the event which we posted on our Instagram and Eventbrite page.
Here is the link to the Eventbrite (It looks a bit different now because the event has happened and Eventbrite does not show all the information after the event):
Katie and I had an art session before the event where we created paintings, postcards and t-shirts with Saint Catherines written on them underneath a print of the view from Saint Catherines onto the hills that overlook Loch Fyne. These were our prize products and they required some planning to figure out how to execute them and they took hours to make. But we were super happy with the results.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
On the night we started off with Orla and Katie introducing the project (their love child as I secretly call it). We then screened our test shoot as our proof of concept to show everyone who was attending what the film would be about.
Tumblr media
Making a film on such a delicate and important topic as sexual assault we all agreed it would be great for us to have some charities there to speak to our audience and show other projects that are currently making a difference and fighting against sexual assault in society and trying to make the world a better place. I organised for two student-led charities to speak at the event. These were Sexpression and Sex on Campus, both are run by Edinburgh University students and support a cause that we at Saint Catherines thoroughly support as well. Sexpression is a sex educator group that is based at universities UK-wide where students go to schools and teach sex education to pupils from ages 11 to 18. I am part of this group outside of uni and can confirm that it is run and handled with great professionalism and care for young people's safety and ensuring that they feel more comfortable moving forward through their youth and into young adult life. Sex on Campus was a more similar and well-paired cause to our project as it is battling rape culture in universities, especially at Edinburgh University. Sex on Campus is even affiliated with our film which felt like a very special backing to have which we are honoured to have and very grateful for. I'm afraid we were unable to have Sexpression's affiliation as they are such a big charity and their affiliation would have meant that they would have been involved in the edit of the film as well.
Here are some photos of Sexpression and Sex on Campus giving talks at the fundraiser:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also created a pub quiz with help from Katie on a few sections and this was the absolute hit. Or at least I had so much fun making it and hosting it as well. We, of course, had a film and television round, a women's history round (because of our feminist crew and project), a music round and as inspired by James Fox himself we had a physical challenge round, where we had participants suck and lift skittles with straws from one plate onto another. What I really enjoyed about this was trying to make it into a quiz that was doable for a different audience to your typical quiz goer, offering music and film choices that I would mostly actually be able to get myself, when usually I can only offer a couple of answers correctly. I tried to put in a little something for everyone, but of course, you can't make everyone happy. My favourite part was the physical challenge because it completely changed the dynamic and the atmosphere in the room.
Here are some photos from the quiz, including Katie and I hosting, the physical challenge set up and people at their quizing tables:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the end of the night, Katie hosted an open mic night which was really special as well. That girl can sing! No, really her voice is beautiful and actually features in both soundtracks of Saint Catherines and Where Currents Meet.
The fundraiser was a success and helped us with getting together some substantial money for our film. Most importantly though it was a great time and felt very rewarding. It reminded me why I am on a project like this trying to support and further a cause I believe in so strongly.
Funnily enough a couple of days after the fundraiser we had a massive donation from an anonymous donor who turned out to be a rich man Orla had met at a bar a month earlier. We all joked about it, but this just happened to be someone who often puts money into different projects and we were lucky. And even though we might not have needed to do the fundraiser if we had known he would donate, I am still so happy to have done it. It showed me that I can organise events to a level that I am very happy with and can be organised when I put my mind to it.
We made just under £300 at the fundraiser which was nice to add to our overall budget. I will be organising more events soon because I enjoyed it so much so stay tuned.

"all the judge agree that any of you could be our new soloist, and i expect to see you all in our soloist roster one day. but today, we - and the audience - had to make a choice. a tough one. yet, no matter the outcome, know that none of you are lacking and for those who do not win, this door isn't permanently closed. in fact, while the winner will become our new SOLOIST, the second place will get a SOLO FANMEETING and the third place a NEW SONG (ooc: no promotions)" after a final look at the contestants, he finally opens a letter he's been holding and reads the results.

third: quality of the requirements submitted, audience votes (performance stats displayed multiplied by their value, which was based on the votes of the members of the rp) judge votes (how much the performance stats displayed have grown through Q3 and Q4 2023 multiplied by their value, which was based on the votes of the members of the rp), performance skill and overall ranking for first, second and third round.

A few questions about the pitch event.
Can you submit multiple pitches? If so, can they be for one day, or should they be spread out if possible?
What should I do if my pitches fit multiple days? For example, having a queer mc who is also disabled.
Do I need to use comps? I personally don't like them and was wondering if they're a must for this event.
Thanks!
Can you submit multiple pitches?
Yes! As long as each of your pitches follow the day’s theme, you may share as many stories in the form of pitches as you’d like. We do ask that you create one standard pitch per WiP, regardless of day or theme.
What should I do if my pitches fit multiple days?
In this case, participants are welcome to choose how they’d like to proceed. You may choose one of the themed days to share your pitch, or you may share your pitch on all applicable days. We leave it up to you!
Do I need to use comps?
The use of comp titles is optional, but recommended. We believe they more quickly translate the aesthetic, tropes, and atmosphere of a story— a sort of shorthand of what the audience can expect. Unlike most traditional pitch events, comps to all books, tv shows, films, comics, pop culture, etc are allowed. That being said, if comps are just not for you, we totally understand.
Please let us know if you have any other questions. A “rules and guidelines” post will be available soon to further clarify this event’s structure. We look forward to your pitch!

tagged by @chiropteracupola a rather long while ago for this ao3 tag game (we are ignoring my play analysis teacher right now so might as well look at my fic writin' stats!)
ao3 name: mxpauling (tho this changes rather frequently!)
fandoms: in terms of fandoms Published On AO3, the greatest number are for detroit: become human and subsequent fan film detroit: evolution, due to my feverish participation in the deartfest fan event summer of 2020 (in which i wrote well over a novel's worth of words in. approximately a month.), but others represented include: team fortress 2 (specifically of the flintlock fortress variety), mystery science theater 3000, spies are forever, hadestown, the true lives of the fabulous killjoys, and some smaller one off fandoms (deathtrap, the moors, goncharov, the wolf and the watchman, and where or when)
number of works: 28! which is. a Lot higher than i remembered it being
work I spent the most time on: fairly certain it's 'leave your body at the door' as it was written over the course of about four months, which for me (guy with formerly wildly unmedicated adhd) was Insane
works I spent the least time on: oof uhhhh i mean i've written Several in the course of just a few hours, like 'cut something, kill something, eat something', 'i can't stand to see you bleed', 'don't give it a hand, offer it a soul', and 'old churchyard', amongst MANY OTHERS THAT ARE OLDER (and i didn't feel like copying)
longest fic: first place goes again to 'leave your body at the door' but coming as a close runner-up is 'Potentially Lovely, Perpetually Human', from way back in the de days
shortest fic: '(i feel) an overwhelming need', my recent the moors character study
most hits: this would be 'Out Of The Blue', due to its featuring in the octopunk monthly roundup at the end of deartfest. turns out, a built in Massive Stream Audience will bring people to your fic
most kudos: once again, 'Out Of The Blue', for much the same reasons
total word count: 144,556???????? (sorry this is NEWS TO ME)
favorite work of my own: a lot of them have already been featured in this list, so i will take this space to spotlight both 'Try Again, Die Again' (i am so proud of the premise) and 'Where the Sun Can't Find Me' (i really liked the prose in this one and am genuinely super pleased rereading it)
fic you want to rewrite / expand on: oof there are Several: i had a halfway plotted third installment of the killjoys: dead zone series about the girl and show pony settling into a new life in batt city that i'd really want to revisit someday; i'd love to restructure and rewrite 'Potentially Lovely, Perpetually Human' to make the pacing a bit more consistent; i have an incomplete fourth fic in the spytown logs series i want to come back to; and for the sake of space and time i want to redo the end of 'Out Of The Blue' because my God it's rushed
share a bit of a wip or story idea you are planning on: changing tacks Entirely. behold my bill & ted fanfiction you cowards
Everything is perfectly, totally sublime, another freakin’ awesome day in San Dimas. And Ted has a seriously heinous problem. “Dude,” he says before his brain really tells him to, turning to Bill, “this day is freakin’ awesome.” Bill nods, smiling most radiantly, pushing his sunglasses up his nose. “Totally awesome.” It is. Today is totally, absolutely, one hundred percent awesome, but… Ted doesn’t feel awesome at all.
this is a fic about ted getting wild depression post excellent adventure and not knowing how to deal with it because uhhhh he does not know what depression Is (and also they kiss a little)

Never-stopping Screams: The Silence of the Lambs
Although you might feel that it’s very out of place to write about this film around the time of new year, please excuse me. I must talk about this classical film as I was just completely blown away while watching it. The Silence of the Lambs (1991), directed by Jonathan Demme, is an American psychological horror film that not only performs a fascinating fright to its audience, also exposes numerous societal issues that today’s U.S. is still undergoing. Sexism, child neglect, abuse of power, lack of support on mental health, a list we can continue for days and nights.
To call The Silence of the lambs a psychological horror film, it definitely earns its title. The film does not rely on visuals to receive feelings of fear from its audience, instead, the anxiety rises when the unsettling dialogues occur between these two characters. Almost all the conversations between Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) and Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins) are really the sources that frightens people up. Every converse they make comes to be the most unexpected with almost endless intelligence competitions at all time. Maybe some did notice, but I never thought the word “covet” that supposedly used in a philosophical kind of conversation, is such an essential term leading to the finding of the killer Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). I feel the need to say that, without the character of Hannibal Lecter, this film wouldn’t have achieved so well with its psychological horror. As a seemingly gentle person, it is hard to imagine Lecter as a criminal if he doesn’t make his first appearance inside of a high-security prison. He seems way too tender to be bloodthirsty, until he becomes invasive with his words, as if trying to bring out all the discomfort within one; the last second he acts polite to Starling, the next he begin saying: “You know what you look like to me, with your good bag and your cheap shoes? You look like a rube…you're not more than one generation from poor white trash.” Spitting out offensive language while with the same smile on his face–the fear Lecter can bring out indicates his quality as a professional psychiatrist and cannibalistic murderer, as he can always get to the bottom of people’s hearts both psychologically and physically.
Aside from its great characters, The Silence of the Lambs constantly implies numerous societal problems, especially sexism through shots of the same motif–the direct camera gazing into Starling—suspectful of her worthiness to take on a professional job because of her identity as a woman. Starling has been, throughout the entire film, passively accepting people’s gazes as she is seen not qualified for jobs given to her, not because of her ability. She does not get to participate in an important exchange of information involving Buffalo Bill, as Crawford thinks “sex crime has certain aspects. I’d just as soon discuss in private. You know what I mean?” while looking back at Starling. Then when the doubtful gazes temporarily stops, Starling will have to deal with sexual messages coming from her intelligent male coworkers.
Sexism is only one of the most discussed topics in The Silence of the Lambs. And the complexity of this film can hardly be expressed with my poor use of language; There are just way too many fruits hiding within it, therefore I won't say no more other than just one more sentence--please watch The Silence of the Lambs.

ChatGPT Answer:
To clearly explain to Chloë, Rosario, Rihanna, and Kim why they need to reach out to Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and Margot Robbie for the reimagined reboot of the “Top Secret” project, let's break this down step by step:
1. The Vision for the Reboot
Reimagining the Narrative: Explain how the reboot aims to modernize the original “Top Secret” while maintaining its core essence. This fresh approach will attract new audiences and honor the classic appeal of the original work.
Casting as the Key: Highlight how Emily, Anne, and Margot are pivotal to delivering the artistic vision, given their unique talents, star power, and compatibility with the themes of the reboot.
2. Why Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and Margot Robbie?
Emily Blunt: Renowned for her versatility in roles ranging from action (Edge of Tomorrow) to musicals (Mary Poppins Returns), Emily would bring depth and a dynamic presence to the project.
Anne Hathaway: With her past success in ensemble projects like Ocean's 8 and her Academy Award-winning performance in Les Misérables, Anne has demonstrated a unique ability to shine in reboots and reimaginings.
Margot Robbie: As a global star with recent iconic roles (Barbie, Birds of Prey), Margot’s charisma and nuanced performances would add both prestige and a contemporary edge to the film.
3. The Role of Chloë, Rosario, Rihanna, and Kim
Networking: These four have significant influence and connections in the entertainment industry. Their outreach could effectively communicate the project’s vision and secure the interest of the actresses.
Collaborative Pitch: Encourage them to highlight the collaborative and groundbreaking nature of this reboot. Stress how Emily, Anne, and Margot’s involvement would be integral to its success.
4. Artistic and Strategic Alignment
Creative Alignment: Explain how this trio of actresses embodies the qualities needed to bring the project to life. Discuss specific character traits or themes in “Top Secret” that align with their acting strengths.
Market Appeal: Point out how casting well-known, talented actresses elevates the reboot’s credibility and ensures strong box office potential, making this a win-win for all involved.
5. Crafting the Approach
Personalized Outreach: Chloë, Rosario, Rihanna, and Kim should tailor their messages to each actress, referencing their past work and explaining how their skills align with the reboot’s vision.
Shared Enthusiasm: Emphasize their collective excitement and commitment to making this project a standout reboot in film history.
By clearly outlining the vision, importance of casting these actresses, and leveraging the influence of Chloë, Rosario, Rihanna, and Kim, you ensure a focused and effective effort to bring Emily Blunt, Anne Hathaway, and Margot Robbie into this exciting project.

Festival Summary
Tumblr media
Hey everyone! I just want to say thank you for tuning into my blog posts over the past month. This is unfortunately my last post about the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. Before going into detail about what I learned during this trip, I want to share with you all of the films I went to see:
Eno (Premiere)
I loved seeing Eno’s creative process. I noticed that this premiere had an overall positive energy to the film.
I was also able to ask Brian Eno a question at the end that is up on Hollywood Deadline's social media, which was super cool!
The Greatest Night in Pop
Nearly made me cry hearing the iconic voices of the artists that worked on “We are the World.”
Freaky Tales
Tied for the best film I saw. I loved how four different stories all became intertwined at the end of the movie.
A Different Man
Was an odd film, however, I enjoyed it a lot. The film would trigger several different emotional responses from the audience.
Krazy House
This is easily my second favorite film of the festival. It is so serious yet unserious at the same time. I almost cried from laughing so hard.
Being (The Digital Griot)
It was interesting to engage with other people as an AI robot led our discussion. People felt like they were being listened to, and I find that to be significant.
Eno (again)
I still absolutely loved my second time seeing Eno. This film was a lot more funny than when I saw the premiere.
I Saw the TV Glow
Although odd, I found the film to be very aesthetically pleasing and beautiful.
Short Film Program 2
Mother Tongue
Merman
Pasture Prime
The Lost Season
Thirstygirl
The Masterpiece
I found these films to be funny and beautiful with different animation styles, and shots to convey tense situations for actors, actresses, and narrators to portray in the films.
As We Speak
This is also tied for the best film I watched at the festival. As a rap beat producer, I can relate to this film to an extent because I participate in the craft that is currently being used against its artists by prosecutors and police.
Talks:
Mental Health in Film
We engaged in a lot of deep conversations which helped me become comfortable with my peers.
Latino Filmmakers
I was able to attend a networking event with Latino Filmmakers at Sundance. I was able to meet a lot of very nice and welcoming people who were eager to share their experiences in the film industry.
After attending the festival, I have learned first hand that our textbook author’s claim regarding how indie film cannot be defined simply in economic, stylistic or thematic terms, is accurate, especially when the author says that indie film needs to be understood culturally. When attending Sundance, the films I watched were anything but similar to Hollywood films. Films like As We Speak focused a lot on issues that mainly impacted the Hip-Hop/Rap community and systemic issues that would unfairly convict black artists using their own lyrics as evidence in court. Other films like Freaky Tales focused on a different form of storytelling where the entire story unfolded after the first three sections of the film. Other films are completely experimenting with different types of form. Eno for example utilizes an AI software developed by the creators of the film to jumble tons of archival footage taken of Brian Eno. In fact there is still a ton of footage that still has not been seen by the general public despite the film being screened several times at Sundance.
However, what I learned to be most important after visiting the Sundance Film Festival is networking. There are hundreds, even thousands, of people who pursue or are interested in something related to film, which was extremely helpful for a film student like myself. I was super stressed about not knowing my path for this upcoming summer and what I would be doing with my time. I am extremely grateful to say that I was able to collect the contact information of multiple people already in the film industry and others who are close with people in the film industry. With that being said, I also want to say how important it is to talk to people. When in Sundance, you have several opportunities to talk to people. It all starts with a simple compliment or an introduction of yourself. You never know who you could be sitting next to on the bus or in the theater. Although it is possible to experience Sundance without talking to people, it defeats the purpose of the festival as it is a place to discuss film and find people to collaborate with. So if any of you decide to attend Sundance, take advantage of all the different mixers or other discussion events.
Once again, thank you all for reading. I hope my blog posts and advice have given you some inspiration to check out some of these films or maybe even consider attending the festival. Sundance was truly a unique environment that gave me experiences that I am extremely thankful for.
Until next time,
-Jackson Willhoit

10th anniversary and still nothing... Not even a peep. It's so sad... All that and we never even got a proper ending. What a waste of potential. I hope Jack's happy, with all his money from loyal fans...
Do me a favor and stick a fork in the nearest electrical outlet. Anyway. Hi. I’ve been getting a lot of these asks for the show’s anniversary, so I thought I’d come out of hibernation for a little to check in on the fanbase. By which, I mean, the twelve of you still writing CeVonn/Brian slash fic well after both characters got murdered- shine on, you magnificent bastards. I hope one day to have a fragment of the dedication you all have to shit that doesn’t matter. To the rest of you- I’ve put together this handy Q&A guide, after which I’m never speaking to you again. Enjoy! Where’ve you been since the finale? Out. The team is not A Coherent Unit anymore, which means we largely had no interest in carrying on our social media presence. You can still find the other folks Around, at social media links I’m not gonna bother with. I know Timothy is doing some spin-off thing. Allison’s scrubbed her online presence, which was the smartest move of any of our little gaggle. Jamir’s gotten really into Horizon shit. And Lakeisha died in a dust collapse a few years back. Sorry if this is how you found out. Why haven’t you made any follow-ups to Station 55? Lot of reasons. I told the story I wanted to tell. And frankly, seeing how awful everyone was being about the end, I didn’t have any real interest in making more content for that particular audience. It’s a horror series, whatever else the fanbase wanted it to be. And just like The Pump Operator said in episode 3- this was never going to be a story with a happy ending. What was in the green barrel? What happened to The Noise Machine? What did the Drill Repairwoman’s song mean? Use your imagination. Were The Deep Tunnels based on a real place? Yes- and filmed there, too. The entirety of Station 55 was produced and recorded in Safety Bunker A93, adjoining the city of Port Conroy. After Dustfall, the whole team were stuck living there while we waited for the surface to be inhabitable again. And there wasn’t a lot else for us to be doing with our time. Can I make a spin-off series? Can I sell Station 55 merch? You can. And you should. The fuckers that own the rights now are content to make Silt Monster Funko Pops every year or two- you can do better. Make a James doll from the vivisection scene with little removable organs- have some fun with it. I found your other social media- why does it say Ethel instead of Jack? Take a wild guess. Take a realllllly wild guess. Really rub your brain cells together, get the old hamster wheel in your skull moving. Are you serious about never talking to the fanbase again after this? Yep. Inexplicably, I still want to see more of your content. Where can I do that? Twitch.tv/ethelnightshade- stream Wednesdays and Sundays. We write, watch movies, and indulge in wildly self-indulgent ARG bullshit. Occasionally, I will Play a Video Game if I really need manna for the electric bill. I found this blog because I saw you were participating in the Grand Brutale, and have no context for any of the above. Sincerely- what the fuck? Sorry.
I found this blog because I was an earnest fan of Station 55, and have no context for what a Grand Brutale is. Sincerely- what the fuck? Video game battle royale competition that I’ve inexplicably been chosen for. I am excited to take a clean 98th place after I’m killed in the first ten seconds by a Vtuber with an anime girl falsetto and coloring normally reserved for poisonous snakes. I just wanted to say, how much your show has meant to me. It really helped when I was going through a bad time/helped me meet my friends/come to terms with my sexuality/made me realize I wanted to make movies when I grew up. 1) Thank you. Genuinely. 2) Christ the Buddha, please have higher standards. I wrote this shit when I was 19, you can do better.

A Kiss With a Fist is Better than None (Gender Fluid Loki x Original Female Character) Chapter 1
Summary: The Chief of Vanir is has declared his thousand-year challenge. A contest of strength and cunning and endurance that promises a life-changing sum of money to its victor.
It's Loki's challenge to win it. Not for the money, of course, but for the glory. The glory and his father's favor.
And then there's Gin, a down-on-her-luck pilot with only the Tonic, her rusted out bucket of bolts spaceship to call her own. She could care less about glory... but the prize money? Now that would mean a lot.
Our two heroes find themselves at odds fighting for the same prize, but the Vanaheim challenge brings them together as much as it pushes them apart... and both have more tricks up their sleeves than the other realizes.
This galaxy-spanning adventure takes place before the events of Thor, and expands the scope of the Nine Realms. Knives will be crossed, words will be said, and (redacted) will be (redacted). So buckle up, and come along for the ride.
Author's notes: This is a departure from my Loki x reader fics, but I hope long time followers will still enjoy it.
This is not beta'd and only lightly edited, so please excuse all typos. I've taken a break from fics to write an unrelated novel (!!!) but Fanfic is life, and I need to get this story out of my system. Length will end up being similar to According to Plan, but it will be released at a slightly slower cadence.
As a disclaimer: I am queer, but I am not gender fluid! I am trying my best to be respectful and educated in writing this version of Loki. This characterization is influenced by my interpretation of Marvel's characterization of Loki in the films, show, and comics, as well as my experiences with gender-fluid members of my community, and my experiences as a queen person. With that in mind, I am very open to respectful feedback on this quality of the character from gender-fluid readers. It is my job to educate myself, but also, I relish first hand testimony if offered freely. That being said, I want to manage expectations by saying that throughout, Loki exhibits themself as male in this story more often than female because that's just how it's shaking out. It's a lot of Tom rattling around up in the ol' noggin what can I say.
Pairing: Loki (Marvel) x Original Female Character
Content Warning: 18+ smut ahead - just not in this chapter...

A summons for a formal audience with Odin was never a good thing. A sense of dread and forbidding gripped Loki’s stomach while he waited outside of the great gilded doors of the throne room for his audience with the Allfather.
There was a time, Loki remembered, when he was permitted more casual chats with Odin. There was still, of course, the occasional family meal, but so often now, the group was far-flung across the Nine Realms, or too preoccupied with their own interests to participate in casual familial discussions.
It wasn’t that Loki didn’t long for the closeness that others had, it was just that distance often made things easier in the Asgardian royal family. Playing things close to the chest was not only expected, it was a rather necessary preservation tactic. His mother was the only one who even got close to knowing the truth inside of Loki’s head - inside of any of them in the palace, he suspected. Frigga was the glue that kept the family together - even if it wasn’t much more than a shimmering facade.
Gleaming guards opened the doors to the great chamber and Loki readied himself. This could be another of Odin’s famous lectures or it could be…. Well, Loki wasn’t exactly sure what else this little meeting could be about. His father had offered him very little aside from chastisement since childhood, and what good news or approval that he had doled out was done rather causally and without much pomp or circumstance.
Loki kneeled before the Allfather, his chest clenched and bile rising in his stomach.
“You called for me, father?”
“Yes, my son. I have a matter for you to attend to. A matter of great importance to Asgard.”
Loki rose, curiosity in his countenance and on his face, “What is it? I am eager and honored to do my duty to you, and to the Nine Realms,” it was a rare opportunity for Loki to be asked to test his mettle in an official capacity. He was thrilled to be so openly offered the chance - he prayed he didn’t sound too desperate.
“As you are aware, another sun soon turns upon Vanaheim. As it is his custom, the chief of the Vanir is set to hold his annual hunt. I think it would be a show of good will in our protectorate for a prince of Asgard to participate in this year’s challenge.
“But there is another reason… I fear that in light of their recent prosperity, the Vanir have forgotten why they are a dominion of Asgard. I believe it is time for a gentle show of strength. Of domination. Let us remind them of their place in the Nine Realms.
“I need you, Loki, in no uncertain terms, to enter the contest and win it. Asgard depends on it, and I will be gravely disappointed if you do not.”
And there it was. Odin needed his second son to act as his barking dog and put the Vanir back in their place.
Loki was aware of the pleasant misconception that the Vanir were more than happy to be a peaceful and supplicant protectorate of Asgard - but he was equally aware of the truth that had been lost to time, the way so many difficult facts often were. The truth was that the war between the Aesir and the Vanir was heavy and heated and brutal, and lad left Vanaheim with almost nothing - a shadow of their former empire. The Vanir were reliant on the good graces of the Aesir after that, and a reliant protectorate, as Loki and Odin both knew, was an obedient one.
“Why not Thor? Why not your more gleaming son?” The question came out with more heat than Loki intended. He should be thankful to play a meaningful part in maintaining Asgard’s vast dominion, he knew. He just wished that it wasn’t so belittling.
“Loki, my child, Thor was built for combat, but you were built for strategy. I would not challenge you to this if I did not think you were up to the task,” Odin knew his flattery would always work. Maybe that was his reason for holding back casual affection. Odin’s grand gestures would always taste sweet if there was little else to compare them to.
“Alright father. If it means so much, of course I’ll participate. I’ll do you proud.”
“Of course you will my son, for Asgard! I have no doubt.”
And with a wave of Odin’s hand, Loki was dismissed without another word on the matter.
But of course Loki did have doubts. He had doubts about his father’s flattery, about his father’s motives, and about his own abilities in tackling the task at hand.
Loki had not acquiesced to Odin’s mission in ignorance. He knew all about the famed and fabled Vanir challenge. Each year that the chief of the Vanir turned older he hid his most prized possession in a new location in the universe, setting up a complex and often deadly series of clues to challenge those brave enough, or foolish enough, to attempt to find it. The one who found the object was declared champion and could exchange the object for a literal king’s ransom - an amount to turn the tides of someone’s destiny and make even the most satiated men drool with desire. Or at least that’s what the stories said. It was an opportunity that no adventurer could refuse.
But since the stars spin more slowly around Vanaheim, and years are catalogued rather differently in the protectorate, there hadn’t been a challenge held since Loki and and his brother were but infants - almost 1000 Asgardian years ago. Most of the reliable sources of information on the event were long dead, or their memories had quite moved on to more important matters. It was hard to discern what was sensationalized and what was true. It’s not that Loki wasn’t intrigued or excited by the prospect - he was young, full of vim and vigor, and eager to to prove himself - it’s just that the whole prospect rather reeked of a trap.
Loki stalked the gold-columned hallways of the palace looking for his brother. When they were growing up the two of them often had elaborate play-fights, pretending that they were battling for the prize of Vanaheim. They would have a handmaid hide a trinket somewhere in the castle and race to find it first. The idea of it captured their imaginations so completely that nary a chair or bush or delicate vase could stand in the way of their conquest. They’d gotten into so much trouble for ruining the castle grounds in those days, which only made the taste of victory that much more sweet.
Yes, Loki thought, If anyone would understand it would be Thor.
It was in his private chambers that Loki finally found Thor, alone, thankfully, and indulging in a small private meal. It was the strange for the younger son to see his brother without his coterie of war-hearty companions.
“And where are Lady Sif and the Warriors Three this evening?” Loki asked, a passing wonder at the likelihood of a conversation with Hogun - Thor’s Vanir compatriot.
“I’m not feeling up to their company tonight brother - tell me, have you spoken yet with father?
“What do you know of that?”
“I know that he asked you to partake in the Vanir challenge. I know that he asked you to win.”
“So you’ve already spoken to him?” A different kind of picture was beginning to form in Loki’s head
“I proposed the idea. I proposed that I enter the contest myself.”
So Odin denied Thor’s opportunity for glory, and suggested his youngest son enter the fray instead. What was the Allfather playing at? Loki’s suspicions were not being put at rest.
“Well, I daresay you would have been the better son for it. You’re much more the type to be deemed a champion,” what Loki didn’t say was that he was beginning to think that maybe Odin didn’t want his youngest son to make it out alive.
“Loki, you disparage yourself! You are every bit the fighter that I am. And far more cunning. I do not begrudge you this opportunity - My only regret is that I shall not be at your side when you claim the victory!”
at least Loki found it reassuring to know that Thor still thought of him as a brother-at-arms and not just a mewling tag along to risky adventures.
“You’re right, as always brother. And I think it’ll be good for me, to do this on my own. And… this way I’ll secure all of the glory for myself,” he finished with a wink and a nudge, the joke sitting easier on his tongue than the truer emotions.
Thor indulged Loki with a tight smile and a pleasant, if awkward moment of silence. Neither brother wanted to walk away, but neither were willing to burst the lingering bubble of all the things they truly needed to share.
“Are you nervous Loki?” Asked Thor after a while. It was the tip of the more serious question looming beneath it.
“Whatever has the God of Mischief to be worried about?” A cowardly deflection, Loki knew, but this was a familiar mode for them.
“You’ve heard the stories… the legends, the rumors. Great hungry monsters, perilous traps. Clues that brutally test both the body and the mind - Mighty heroes laid waist by the smallest of missteps. Surely it sets you on edge. We were brought up on the same tales. It must grip your imagination as much as it does mine.”
“My imagination, sure. But Thor. They are but stories, distorted by sensation and time. I’m excited, actually. If the legends are even half true, it should all be great fun,” Loki wouldn’t drop his bravado enough let his brother see how anxious he really was. He couldn’t falter in his resolve now. He did it for his own sake, but also for Thor’s. If an accident were to befall Loki in the contest, he couldn’t let Thor live with the guilt of thinking there was anything he could have said to stop it.
And there wasn’t, really. Odin had made up his mind for everyone.
——————————————————————
A serpent before a frog was never a good thing. A sense of fear and anxiety gripped Gin’s stomach while while she watched the last of the ivory dice roll across the textured canvas laid out on the makeshift table.
Another serpent. The tiniest exhale. A draw and a new round. Not all was lost yet. Gin let her chest ease slightly as she rolled one of the worn dice in her fingers. Bear, bear, bear, she prayed. It was her only chance now at taking home the pot. And she needed that money if she was ever going to get off this Godforsaken rock…
Bear.
“YES!” She screamed, almost forgetting herself. It didn’t behoove her situation to appear as anything but hard and nonplussed. Emotion betrayed motive, and motive could be exploited. Gin quickly shut her mouth and reached for the pile of coins and paper cash stacked on the corner of the table.
“Wait,” the rather large, rather rough, rather scarred hand of her opponent landed on top of hers, stopping her from claiming the prize, “How’d you do it? Magic?”
“Buddy, it’s a dice game. It’s all up chance,” magic? She thought, what was this guy talking about? If Gin had magic, she wouldn’t need to be in this hellhole scraping by, betting on loose change.
“So you rigged the dice then?”
“Mister, they’re your dice. How could I have rigged them?” This was getting absurd, Gin reached for a loose coin and tossed it with a flick of her thumb, “Here. This is thanks for letting me use them, your very nice, very balanced dice.”
The coin clattered to the ground with a tinkling chime. The man gripping her hand didn’t even turn to look. Oops, Gin realized, maybe that was a little too condescending for the very large, very scary man that is currently gripping me.
“You think you can just take my money?” The man asked, tightening his hold on Gin’s arm.
“I mean, technically, it’s not your money. Not anymore… any of these people can attest to that,” Gin gestured at the crowd of onlookers who were never far from a compelling game of chance. But none of them would meet her gaze, and most had begun shuffling away in awkward avoidance.
Shit, Gin thought, I was really hoping I wouldn’t have to do this.
Her balled up fist lashed out and hit the beastly goon firmly in his side where Gin desperately hoped there was something akin to a kidney. He winced and doubled over, freeing her hand long enough to grab the cash on the table. With a swipe of her arm she scooped what coins she could into her worn leather satchel and kicked the ad-hoc table, sending dice and the remaining coins flying.
The large scarred hand grabbed her again, pushing on her shoulder. Gin used the momentum to fall into a spin, twisting her way out of the grip and clipping the man’s ankles and knocking him off-balance with a low kick. She clambered out of his reach, using his disorientation as an opportunity. Half of the remaining crowd was scrambling for the strewn coins, she dodged and weaved around them desperately trying to blend into the portion of the crowd that was frantically fleeing.
Gin pushed through the scrambling masses, working her way out of the seedy corner of the market that the gamblers lurked in. She spun around the crowd, ducking behind carts and crates praying to lose her assailant in the crush of the horde. Spotting an alcove between two shops she crouched, tucking herself away as her opponent stumbled into the open-air market.
A light tapping on Gin’s shoulder disrupted her observation from the sunken vantage point. She looked up and two fingers gestured, silently beckoning her to a bargain. Gin frowned but wordlessly offered up one of the slips of paper she’d grabbed from the table as payment. The vendor nodded and shifted a crate of fragrantly overripe fruit in front of the hiding spot to offer better cover. Clearly this arrangement was one of the invisible goods that this little market was familiar dealing with.
Several long minutes passed and Gin gingerly poked her head out from the little hiding spot looking for any sign of the sore loser that was chasing her. The bustle of the crowd looked more or less normal and she gingerly crept out and away from her alcove.
Quickly but casually Gin beelined for the borders of the shopping district. She had an appointment at the edge of town and the hour was already getting late.
Gin could hear the rumble of the shop’s rolling doors closing before she saw it and picked up her pace.
“Wait! Waitwaitwait! Marty! I’ve got your money!”
The sinewy shopkeep turned shaking his head, “Gin, it’s too late. I’ve already waited longer than I should have. There’ll be hell to pay in the morning as it is. You lost kid.”
“No, please, please. I’ve got the money, and more… well a little more,” she rifled through the stack of paper cash, “The boss can’t say no to that can he? I’ve given him so much already. This is the last payment, then he’ll never have to see my face or hear my name ever again.”
“Yeah… not until the Great Gin needs another favor and a loan. You had a contract Gin. And you didn’t meet it. The boss is gonna sell her for parts in the morning.”
“No! He can’t, please Marty. Please. It’s all here,” she pressed the wad of cash into his hand, “He can’t it’s my legacy. You know how important this is,” Gin hated begging, but she’d gotten pretty good at it in the last few years. It’s amazing how used you can get to things when you’re desperate.
Marty huffed and looked around in frustration until ultimately shoving the stack of cash into the large leather pocket of his apron.
“Okay Gin, but If I get heat for this, I’m personally going to hunt you down and skin you myself,” Marty rolled the large metal door back up onto its clattering wheel and Gin ducked under before it was even fully open.
The warehouse door exposed a cavernous room stuffed with all manner of tagged and catalogued items. Gin wound through aisles of weapons, vases, jewels and vehicles, striding down the practiced path until she reached her ultimate destination.
Before her loomed a large four-winged ship, shiny graphite-black save for the copious burns and scrapes tattooing its nose and sides - Every one bringing to mind a close encounter or near-death escape and a tall tale that Gin could tell. She pressed her hand and then her cheek against the scraped nose of the ship, greeting the vehicle like it were her trusty steed.
“Tonic,” she said quietly, “I’ll never leave you alone ever again. I promise.”
“Stop talking to the ship Gin. She’s just a hunk of metal.”
“No, Marty, that’s where you’re wrong. She’s my very best friend. She’s family.”
“You know that’s… really sad, right? Don’t you have any real family to look after?” Marty tossed her the keys and they were caught by deft hands.
“Marty, do you think that if I had any real family left that I would be here, right now, with you?” She walked around to the cargo bay’s side door and unlocked it, stepping inside and taking a deep huff of the stale air.
“Well… no,” Marty stared at her a moment wondering if he should poke more into that dismissal of a response or let it go. He let it go.
“For the price you paid to get her back, you probably could have gotten something newer. Smaller sure, but faster,” he watched the woman inspect the inside and clean cobwebs from control panels, “Where do you plan to take her next, anyway?”
“Marty… have you ever heard of a place called Vanaheim?”

Mature animated film recommendations
My followers expressed interest for this, so here’s a post compiling some animated films. Please note “mature” does not mean adult, some of these are watchable by family audiences, but they are not meant with children as a target audience in mind. I will also be excluding animation for adults that goes straight for crudeness. The criteria for my choices will be the following:
They have to be films I have seen in full and recommend, but I will describe them as objectively as possible.
These are not series, but either feature length movies, or shorts. All picks here will be watchable as standalones.
They have to be animated. This includes stop motion, full CG, traditional media, as well as a mix of techniques.
For each pick will be included a short spoilerless description, some of the major themes, as well as any content warnings that might apply. More movies might be added to this post in the future.
The rabbi’s cat
2011 - France - Hand-drawn 2D. Family friendly
Contains descriptions of colonialism, antisemitism, racism and misogyny. A single on-screen fight scene has two men stabbed to death.
Philosophy, adventure, religion, humor
An animated adaptation of the comic of the same name, that compiles several of its stories in a single one. The rabbi’s cat has the wild adventures, talking beast premise and pacing of a fairytale, but whose characters are individuals full of personality.
A charming movie with unusual pacing and great acting. Watching the original french dub is a must.
Is on Amazon Prime to stream. Moderatly famous movie, should be easy to find copies of.

Bob spit - We do not like people
2021 - Brazil - Stop-motion
Has nudity, cartoon gore/violence, implied sex. And lots of drugs
Art and being an artist, life journeys, comics, post-apoc, 80s
Part pseudo(is it?) documentary, part fantasy, it’s a film where brazilian cartoonist Angeli is interviewed, talking about his creative endeavors and the current crisis he’s in, half set insides his imagination, where his ugly and weird creations set on a journey across the wastes to prevent him from killing them like he loves to do to his characters.
While made by a fan of and acted by said artist and his friends, you can enjoy this film without knowing anything of his work. The physicality of the stop motion puppets and backgrounds works delightfully with the grimy punk vibes of it all and it’s not afraid to get weird.
Unfortunately not widely available, but english subtitles exist.

My friend who shines in the night
2020 - France - Hand-drawn 2D. Family friendly
No content warnings
Death, friendship, slice of life
A staggeringly normal guy finds a lone ghost in his garden and decides to help them find out who they might have been in life and why they’re stuck here, unable to pass.
This is a student film of exceptional quality and heart-warmingly down to earth for a story about, well, not being quite on this earth.

Tumblr media
Redline
2009 - Japan - Hand-drawn 2D. Family friendly(*)
(* Has swearing and 1.5 instances of bare tits. No other content warnings apply)
Sports, cars, sci-fi, anime extravaganza
Participants from all over the universe compete in the titular car race, a high stakes, no limits, completely illegal event that hypes the entire galaxy, much to the dismay of the planet the cars land on.
On a technical standpoint, Redline is insane. Animation, pacing, writing and music are perfectly calibrated to deliver a film that builds up hype the entire runtime. Don’t expect depth, you won’t need it - this is a movie that is just pure adrenaline and fun. Not liking cars shouldn’t be an obstacle, it’s to racing what Dragonball Z is to kung-fu.
I recommend watching the english dub. It’s fully on YouTube, albeit in bad quality.
Tumblr media
Egg
2018 - Denmark/France - Hand-drawn 2D
This is an extremely hard film to watch. See description for content warnings.
Mental illness, dysphoria, eating disorders
Depicts the inner monologue of a woman trying and failing at battling her eating disorders. Alone in a room, she sees herself, her surroundings and her thoughts morph into monstrosities.
A gutting and raw depiction of the suffering caused by mental illness. While a remarkable movie, it’s one of the most disturbing ones I have seen, and heavily recommend skipping if you are having second thoughts about the topic discussed.

La traversée (The Crossing)
2021 - France - Paint on glass animation. Family friendly
Depictions of genocide and child abuse
Persecution, immigration, travel, growing up
A brother and a sister flee their village to escape a pogrom, and soon find themselves alone, traveling through a fictional continent, trying to find ways to go further at each step, meeting a gallery of people along their way.
Literally an animated painting due to its technique. The story was inspired by the one of the creator’s own family, and she voluntarily chose a calm, down to earth, focused tone to depict the difficult subject matter. Never does this film try to push emotions onto the viewer, letting you travel alongside the protagonists instead, with no commentary, to experience their journey.
Unfortunately not localized that I know of.
Tumblr media
Tekkonkinkreet
2006 - Japan - Hand-drawn 2D and CG. Family friendly-ish (*see description)
Pretty graphic descriptions of violence towards children
Growing up, change, imagination
Two street kids watch the neighborhood they call home lose itself to gentrification. Their situation takes a dire turn when the local mafia in charge of operations decides to get rid of them once and for all - progress cannot be stopped by nobodies who exist outsides the law.
Although suffering from a rushed ending, it’s a story that provides many layers to get lost in, served by superb visuals and music. The two little protagonists and their sometimes troubled relationship are extremely endearing, and the film is emotional without being cheesy. (*)While I consider it an adult film, I’ve seen many fans say they grew up with it...hard to judge.
Famous movie, should be widely available to buy/rent
Tumblr media
Ruben Brandt: Collector
2018 - Hungary - 2D and CG mix. Family friendly-ish
Unreality, child abuse
Crime, fine arts, psychology, dreams
A psychiatrist is haunted by terrifying nightmares, ruining his life. Featured in all of them are famous paintings he, an art connoisseur, knows well. His clients learn of his troubles and decide to help the man fight his demons through a therapy they’re familiar with: high crime.
Ruben Brandt is a love letter to painting and art that does a lot of things very well. Charming characters, an investigation to follow, both fun and disturbing. The art style, voluntarily semi abstract for it’s characters, might take some time to get used to, but is very striking in it’s weirdness.
Should be on Netflix.
Tumblr media
Yûl and the Snake
2015 - France - Hand-drawn 2D
Child abuse
Slice of life, growing up, petty crime, authority
A boy accompanies his older brother during a visit to his boss in a remote corner of the wilderness. The two men play power games, taunting each other, and lash out at the boy.
This movie stands out for how naturally it’s written and acted. It’s intense and upsetting because it feels so real.

Summit of the Gods
2021 - France - Hand-drawn 2D
Child death in a single scene
Mountain climbing, investigations, human relationships, nature
A journalist interested in the quest to scale Mount Everest catches a glimpse of a Japanese mountain climber long thought to be dead. He decides to track down the man and discover the truth.
This is a film you forget is animated very fast, but who’s animation itself is great, daring realism and an eye for technical detail.
Should be on Netflix soon.
Tumblr media
Millenium actress
2001 - Japan - Hand-drawn 2D. Family friendly
No content warnings
Love, life purposes, acting, passion
A dedicated fan interviews a once-famous Japanese actress. In front of his camera, she relives her entire life, role by role, revealing the motivation she’s had all this time: reuniting with the man she fell in love with when she was young.
Lighthearted, earnest and charming, just like it’s leading star; it has fantastic animation and a unique, fascinating way to deliver its story. A classic for a good reason!
Famous movie, should be widely available to buy/rent
Tumblr media
Just A Guy
2020 - Germany - stop motion, paper animation, hand-drawn 2D, claynimation
This is an extremely hard film to watch. See description for content warnings.
Love, sex, violence, shock, fan culture
The animated interviews of three women, telling of their relationships with a violent serial killer and rapist, whom they willingly contacted when he was in jail, awaiting his death sentence.
A wild ride of an animated short due to its blend of techniques, animation style, and the brutal honesty towards its subject matter. While cartoony and not containing any footage of the crimes committed, it centers around a very real criminal and details the fan culture around him, especially the sexual aspects, viewer discretion is advised and all that...

Chapped lips
2018 - France - Hand-drawn 2D
Transphobia, suicide
Childhood, gender
A child, seated at lunch, has been sent home from school for causing trouble yet again. “He” tries to tell “his” mother about what weights on “his” mind. The conversation is tenuous.
This is a slow, raw short about the difficulties faced by transgender children, which is depicts very honestly. Not sure how to word this, but it might be very upsetting to watch for people who have experiences similar situations.

Rooty toot-toot
1951 - USA - Hand-drawn 2D. Family friendly
No content warnings
Musical, old timey, justice, crime, humor
A beautiful little lady stands in court for the murder of her man. Her attorney is ready to defend her. This cartoon is paced like a musical, and its art is at the peak of famous USA company UPA’s iconic art style, that still influences productions to this day.
Peak 1950′s illustration style, delightfully animated and really fun.
On YouTube fully in 480p
Tumblr media
Mind Game
2004 - Japan - Hand-drawn 2D and paper cut
Mild violence, some sexual scenes. The beginning of the movie has a pretty graphic scene of sexual assault.
Life and what it’s about, trippy, wild
After dying in a shitty way, a young man cringes himself back to life, which he decides to live to the absolute fullest to prove God not a single instant of that second chance he’s taking will be wasted.
You often hear of the merits of 2D animation that it lets you depict abstraction you just cannot reach with any other medium, and MindGame is the perfect example of that notion. Every part of this movie is drawn to a beyond ridiculous intensity, following the characters’ mindsets across the adventures they live together. It’s a masterpiece in animation and a one-shot kill for your suspension of disbelief.
Famous movie, should be widely available to buy/rent
Tumblr media
Iâhmès and the Great Devourer
2016 - France - cut paper. Family friendly
Child death
Death, mythology, childhood
A child just died. He finds himself in front of the gods, ready to weight his soul, but he refuses to go this way and tries to run away.
A dreamlike, sensible movie about death who uses a rarer and interesting animation technique.
Unfortunately not localized that I know of.
Tumblr media
The Apostle
2012 - Spain - stop-motion. Family friendly(*)
No content warnings in particular but could be too scary for young children.
Folk tales, religion, history
A thief finds himself the host of a remote village in the middle of the Spanish countryside, posing as a pilgrim, while he tries to retrieve the loot his fellow criminal anc convict instructed him to get... But the village is off. He wants none of it, of course, but he cannot escape the things that happen in the night.
A story about local legends that itself plays out like a folk tale. Both fun and spooky, it’s an especially interesting look into european catholicism - the old, old type, who’s weird rituals feel strangely...un-christian.
Available to buy on their website for under 10 euros.
Tumblr media
Junk Head
2017 - Japan - Stop-motion
Some mild puppet gore and body horror
Post-apocalypse, adventure, comedy, just some guys hanging out
In a far future, one of the remaining humans is sent to investigate the underground for the sake of science. Blown up before he can reach solid ground, his head tumbles down there, from a floor to another, encountering the friendly locals who each time, give him a new body and welcome him to their weird little micro societies, before some slapstick disaster promptly makes his head fall once more...
This film was animated by a self taught solo artist (animation, music, puppets/props, writing and most of the voices!), which is already insanely impressive. Should it be the lack of any pressure from higher ups or no being told what to do by executives, but Junk Head is a batshit movie that screams fun for its entire runtime - and a lot, lot of heartfelt passion for movies. It’s weird, it’s funny, it’s touching, because it wants to be these things. A rare gem who stands out as utter opposite to corporate cinema.
Benefits from rare theater screenings, otherwise hard to obtain legally. No US release yet.
Tumblr media
Memories
1995 - Japan - Hand-drawn 2D
Unreality (Magnetic Rose), no other warnings.
Scifi, thriller (Magnetic Rose); adventure, comedy (Stink Bomb), dystopia (Canon Fodder)
Memories is not one movie, but rather three short films mashed together with no transition in the hour and a half format. Each of these stories is fully independent and has its own art style, and all three are worth your time. I will present, in order, each individual short.
Worth noting - as I write this (summer 2022), a remastered version has been announced to get back in theaters! Otherwise, it is a remotely famous movie that should be easily obtained online.
Magnetic Rose: the crew of a spaceship follows an SOS signal which leads them to a long abandoned hunk of metal. Two of the men enter, determined to rescue whoever sent the signal. The deeper they go, the stranger the world around them becomes, as they slowly fall prey to a labyrinth of grandeur and illusions.
Of all three, Magnetic Rose struck me as the best film in the compilation. Great atmosphere and visuals, and very emblematic of that bygone 90s anime art style that flirted with realism.
Tumblr media
Stink Bomb: a guy goes to work at his lab with a killer cold. Tired of sniffling all day, he tries out a new form of medecine, only to wake up a day later, only person left conscious amidst a disaster he knows nothing of. The national alarm is raised, and he sets off on a one man quest to help the nation, unaware of the damage he has done.
This is an over the top, expressive and very, very silly film. Nothing too deep, but it’s a really good time, and showcases some insanely good animation.
Tumblr media
Canon fodder: one full day of the daily life of a mother, father and son, living in a gigantic dystopian nightmare town who’s culture is centered around a single thing - shelling an invisible enemy.
Writing-wise, the weakest of the films, but compensantes with incredible art, more illustrative than animated in style but animated nonetheless, like a strange, obsolete children’s story book from a non existing place and a bygone era... This is a weird, uneasy movie that does not tell much but keeps you watching.
Tumblr media
Backflip
2022 - Germany - CG, live scans and AI animation
No content warnings
Comedy, AI, content creation
Speaking to us viewers using his own synthesized voice, a 3D model of the author explains to us his quest - using a computer simulation to learn how to do a backflip.
Hard to summarize or explain, this short film is a treasure of creativity that uses techniques I have never seen in animation.
Unfortunately not yet distributed.

Films I will not be including:
Akira. There is no point including Akira on a list of films to discover. Of course, I recommend watching it, but at this point who hasn’t? Not family friendly, CWs for body horror, gore, and medical trauma
Waltz with Baschir. An interesting and shocking film but who I did not enjoy enough to recommend it. Not family friendly, CWs for war, trauma and genocide, including actual footage of dead bodies
Anomalisa. Extremely interesting visually but again, not a movie I enjoyed. Not family friendly.
Perfect Blue. There is already a Satoshi Kon movie on the list, and Perfect Blue is a film I have issues with. Not family friendly. CWs for rape, violence and stalking depicted in the movie, as well as ableist writing.
Tokyo Godfathers and Paprika - not included for the same reasons as PB, but I also haven’t seen it. I will some day!
Films on the to-watch list:
Belladonna of Sadness
Angel’s Egg
Persépolis
A Scanner Darkly
Mad God
