Another day, another case of #yellowface. Luckily this once has been roundly criticised by pretty much everyone in the theatre and wider acting industry.

It’s not so much a matter of artistic license, which is always up for debate in a healthy theatre ecosystem; it’s the bare-faced gall of telling people who are (quite reasonably) seeking a dialogue about your choices that:

all-white casting is explained by it being an “English play”

you were wrong to take offence, clearly you didn’t understand...

...the implication being you were ill-equipped to fathom the vagaries of High Art, probably on account of being Not English

‘have you actually read any Howard Barker?’ [the ‘you plebs’ was silent]

it’s set in Ancient China and the characters have Chinese names, but only because we’re using Chineseness in the metaphorical and folkloric sense because that’s not yellowface

So there is a (peaceful) protest this evening outside the Printroom in Notting Hill, on the play’s press night. It won’t disrupt the performance or try to prevent it going ahead, but aims to draw attention to the erasure of East Asians because quite honestly most of the industry has moved in the right direction and if the stragglers need a hand catching up it’s a public service that can be provided. And also the ignorance in their responses can’t be passed over.

To be honest, they could easily have avoided this by confessing that they chose to cast white actors because the theatre company have a small group they work with who are all white. Just own it, apologise, try and make it better if you can (or not). Doubling down and going on the defensive is not a good look, like.

Thoroughly disappointed to sit through this play set in ancient China performed by an all-white cast. This is Yellowface in its truest form within the Arts and no amount of artistic freedom should allow you overlook the talent of East Asian actors in the UK. The Arts have a commitment to diversity and in this case irrespective of the location not playing any significance in the narrative or whether the themes were 'traditionally English'.
