One of the first upgrades I completed this year was my exposure unit. I wanted to build a stationary glass top unit which had safe light working conditions built in to speed up my screen making process. I was previously using a unit which had the light source suspended from above meaning I had to add and remove the (heavy) glass top to the screen each time which wasn’t practical. This new build also has a custom blackout cover that fits over the top during exposure. One improvement I could make to this is to add a vacuum function. I’ve seen them done DIY but I think I’d prefer to buy one in future when I can. Very pleased with this for the time being and it’s great for screens up to 23” x 31” (A1 size). About to step up my exposure game with this 50w UV LED flood light. The light has a wavelength of 395nm which is (according to my research) optimal for exposing screens at and should decrease my time from around 6/7 minutes (using a 500w halogen bulb) to <1 minute. Once I get it mounted up I’ll do some testing and share the results. One thing I’ve noticed recently is the emulsion on the print side of the screen washes away easily after exposure so hopefully this will cure it more thoroughly as well as being faster. Old ink and photo emulsion needs to be cleaned out of screen and all of that water needs to be filtered before going down the drain.
