The Place’s I’ve Cried in Public Holly Bourne
Tumblr media
After reading Holly Bourne’s novel, It Only Happens in the Movies, I became obsessed with her books. So, when I saw that she had a new novel coming out, I was desperate to read it. The Places I’ve Cried in Public follows 17-year-old Amelie as she revisits all the places that her now ex-boyfriend, Reese, made her cry in order to understand what went wrong and ultimately learn how to get over him. It may sound like another break-up novel, but it is so much more than that. It is candid, moving, and, most importantly, it teaches young girls that they are worthy and deserving of respect.
What I love most about Holly Bourne is how innovative her books are. The plots embrace the difficulties of young adult life through uniquely female perspectives that are realistic and don’t succumb to a stereotypical fairy tale structure. Her female leads are portrayed authentically, being both strong and vulnerable, so readers can relate to and admire them. Bourne’s handling of plot and character in relation to difficult issues is achieved with such care and sensitivity that it is what makes her books so enjoyable to read.
With this book in particular, I liked the format Bourne used to tell Amelie’s story. In having it be retrospective rather than chronological, it allowed Amelie to go on a journey of recovery. Although there was anguish in her having to relive such a dark relationship, and also as a reader having to read it, there was also a sense of hope that she would learn from it and heal. By the end of the novel, I was so proud of her. Even though she endured setback after setback, I could see she was trying so hard to comprehend Reese’s abusive nature and find the courage to leave.
Bourne really reminds me of Jacqueline Wilson, but for the teen/young adult generation, because she does not shy away from serious subjects. Instead, she addresses them in painfully honest and realistic ways, which I appreciate. Although a female shouldn’t even have to go through abuse and a recovery period, the fact that Amelie is strong enough to recover no matter how long it takes, is empowering and inspirational.
I think this book is something every young person should read because it raises awareness on abusive relationships whether they are physical or emotional. Most importantly, it allows young people to be able to differentiate abuse from love, and understand that they should never be accepted as the same thing.

*BOOK REVIEW* The Places I've Cried in Public by @hollybourneya 4 / 5 ⭐ • Amelie is reeling from the breakup of her relationship with Reece, the boy who she believed was 'the one'. She begins to retrace the relationship to see where things went wrong, starting with the places she cried in public. This isn't a love story... * trigger warning for difficult content including psychological abuse and sexual assault * This book is a difficult read at times as it deals with a very dark subject. As a reader we have to watch Amelie watch her life fall apart and she's not quite ready to realise or accept the events that caused it. It's really interesting to be inside Amelie's head because it's very easy to understand how someone can find themselves in such an awful situation without noticing it happening. Her friends and family are also utter gems. Her dad in particular is wonderful and I realised its not often we find such brilliant father figures in novels. Amelie's friends Hannah, Jessa, and Alfie are the sort of people everyone needs in their life. My biggest takeaway from this book is that Bourne has made it crystal clear to the reader what the difference is between a healthy relationship and an unhealthy relationship. It is vitally important for younger people to be able to recognise this as it's not often taught in schools. This book tackles mental health issues and specifically psychological trauma in an excellent way. I really appreciated the detail in the scenes with the therapist which helped to show how therapy can work. Whilst a difficult read, it is an important book for all readers especially for older teens to recognise healthy and unhealthy relationships. I would just recommend that you ensure you're in the correct mindset for this book before you go into it. • #hollybourne #theplacesivecriedinpublic #bookblog #bookblogger #bookrecs #bookreview #bookreviews #whattoread #tbr #toberead #bookhaul #bookreviewer #yalit #yafic #ya #yafiction #youngadult #youngadultbooks #youngadultfiction #ireadyalit #yareads #yabookstagram #yalovin #booksandtea #tea #cupoftea #cuppa #teadrinker #teaaddict (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCTlhj_AhJE/?igshid=11nl9vg755gwv

Link to new blog post in my bio! . @hollybourneya is a writer that both Sam and I have followed ever since we both read Am I Normal Yet? To be honest, without it, we wouldn’t be together. A new book of hers would obviously find its way onto our shelves and, whilst I haven’t read it yet, Sam has and he loved it. . This book tells one of those stories that need to be told. Older people need to hear it to, but, by appealing to young adults, hopefully the heartbreak can be avoided as people grow older. . It’s about a whirlwind romance that eventually/inevitably goes wrong. It’s about how to get out of that romance. I know Holly Bourne has done a lot of work on this issue, outside of her books as well, so it’s amazing to see it translated into books teens can read. . (Sam requests she writes about fragile masculinity next. Or maybe about this subject with a less “girly” cover, as young boys need to read this too but probably won’t when it’s pastel coloured.) . ⭐️ Sam gave it 5 stars and missed his stop on the train for it ⭐️ . . . . #bookstagram #bookreview #booksofinstagram #books #sprayededges #bookblogger #theplacesivecriedinpublic #reader #bookblogging #book #bookblog #hollybourne #bookreviewer https://www.instagram.com/p/B3r1GVmA74V/?igshid=zrhfk80oviir

I had the pleasure of reading @hollybourneya at the weekend just after her latest book release. And honestly this is one of the most important books I've read this year and feel everyone should read. Emotional abuse I'd subtle is quiet and is a real issue that we need to take more seriously. 'The Places I've Cried in Public' reads not only as a novel but as a handbook for what to watch out for. #currentlyreading #theplacesivecriedinpublic #hollybourne #books #book #bookish #bookworm #booklover #bookobsessed #deptcon5 #read #reading #iamreading #readmorebooks #emotionalabuse #yafiction #yabooks #youngadultfiction #goodreadschallenge (at Liberty Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/B3nArXjJ8QR/?igshid=13l72qa2c1ej3

Amelie loved Reese. And she thought he loved her. But she’s starting to realise love isn’t supposed to hurt like this. So now she’s retracing their story and untangling what happened by revisiting all the places he made her cry. Because if she works out what went wrong, perhaps she can finally learn to get over him.
This book is a reminder of how powerful words can be. A…

Oops? 🙊 . I was telling myself, only this morning, that I wasn’t going to buy anymore books if I wasn’t planning on immediately reading them. But then I went into Waterstones to ask the staff a question and I wasn’t sure I could ask without buying something 🤦‍♀️ still, I really want to read these soon and I’m reading a lot of fantasy right now, so hopefully they’ll break that up. . I’m going to defend it (I think?) by saying I used some birthday money on a bus ticket and so this was my bus fare. It’s a rubbish justification, I know... . What about I’ve had a really stressful day because I’m trying to make a decision I’m torn up about? (I can say on the bus now, in response to the book.) . I think I may have made my decision, but I also sort of don’t want to have come to that decision. Ahh I don’t know!! (Can you tell why I chose this name?) . But anyway, please tell me these books are amazing! . . . . #withthefireonhigh #theplacesivecriedinpublic #bookstagram #books #read #booksofinstagram #bookbuy #reading #ireadya #bookish #booklover #book #cat https://www.instagram.com/p/B2zCk4PgF_3/?igshid=26qwm1jnmb5a

"Crying is a very obvious sign that something isn’t going right in your life. You should not ignore tears." • This book is quite a heavy read but it's so beautifully written. I. About halfway through and have already made a note to read something much lighter next. • What would you recommend as a nice, light, easy read? • #teenfic #teenfiction #yalit #yafic #ya #yafiction #youngadult #youngadultbooks #youngadultfiction #ireadyalit #yareads #yabookstagram #yalovin #amreading #instaread #instareader #instareading #igreads #readstagram #currentlyreading #readersgonnaread #hollybourne #theplacesivecriedinpublic (at London, United Kingdom) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCEuMfiAv4L/?igshid=13lbwrqlkldm4
