#19 - The Pale Horse
I started The Pale Horse only hours after finishing The Secret Adversary, and while it is no palate-cleanser by any means, it’s a totally different flavour.
Let’s start by addressing what we must address - this book has some extremely racist undertones. Well, overtones. I call out this one specifically because it is woven directly into the plot. This is definitely one of the major incidences in which we have to call back to the “very important note” post I made before we got started here and hold both Christie and ourselves accountable for what is clear prejudice. If you plan on reading this book (or even if you don’t), please make the effort to educate yourself on what makes this book prejudiced and problematic and seek out opportunities to support the communities affected by it.
From a mystery standpoint it was quite the read. It’s a mystery whose answer is being pursued out of an engaging mix of curiousity, urgency, and fear. Mark Easterbrook is definitely one of Christie’s more tolerable one-off amateur sleuths and Ginger Corrigan stands as one of my favourite supporting characters to date. But it was really the ladies of the Pale Horse who got me intrigued. You can practically see all of them in front of you, the way Christie so vividly describes them.
This is the first book in which I’ve run across Ariadne Oliver! To give a brief rundown, Ariadne Oliver is Christie’s self-insertion into her novels. Basically, many members of the fan base have estimated that Ariadne Oliver is how Agatha Christie sees herself, or at least she is the character with the most reflections of herself. And she is hysterical! Christie portrays Mrs. Oliver as strong-willed, sarcastic, and self-deprecating, and it’s just a riot to read.
One last note: this was the first time the method really, truly shocked me since Endless Night. It was sharp and clever, left in the open for anyone to see but unlikely to be figured out. It gets a 9/10 for the twist, and the colour again matches the cover: a soft sparkling lavender.

A new trailer has been released for The Pale Horse, which is set to release March 13, 2020.
Based on the Agatha Christie novel of the same name, it follows the story of Mark Easterbrook whose name appears on a list found inside the shoe of a dead woman. He begins an investigation into how and why his name came to appear on the list which leads him to The Pale Horse, the home of three rumored witches.

@thepalehorses continued from x:
“...Oh.”
It takes her a moment, but in the space it takes her to take a breath, she recalls that face; It had been there in the spaces between worlds, a time she had tried to forget. Certainly, it’s a face she can’t forget easily; the guy on the pale horse, who pushed her back into the world of the living none too gently– Unless a person counts coughing up a lungful of water gentle. She had thought it was all just a part of her own imagination– an explanation for why she’s back here in the land of the living, as one of the half-living.
That thought alone makes her need to take a long drink from her own whiskey and coke before she shakes her head with a small chuckle.
“I should’ve known it was you. You’ve always been that figure just on the edges of my periphery. Can’t say I’m too surprised, that I’m here with you, at a bar, face to face again.”
She looks down at herself as he tells her she looks better than before, before back up at his face, “Thanks. I mean... I’m a little paler, colder, and weirder than before, but at least I’m not blue or foaming at the mouth like Old Yeller anymore, so that’s a definite improvement, right?”
For a long moment, blue eyes study that face, not sure what to say before she looks back down at her drink, fingertips dancing along the rim of the glass on the bar top. “Glad to know you weren’t just a figment of my imagination, after all. In that way, I guess I’m happy to see you again.”
Death has never been super off-putting for her– almost like a friend, a constant companion for the last 10 years or so. Whether or not he sees it that way is another matter.

The Pale Horse 2021 “Aperto 15 TOMIYASU Yuma The Pale Horse” Installation View 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Ishikawa, Japan Oil on panel, furniture, daily objects, old lumber, sand, light bulbs, 19Hz infrasound, others A large installation consisting of a large amount of sand and an old hut built in it. Visitors are allowed to stand inside the hut. The lighting in the exhibition room is programmed to change color and brightness from white to orange to red in three-minute cycles. The interior of the hut is set up like a Showa-era dining room, and the ceiling is collapsed like an abandoned house. A painting depicting “The Pale Horse” hangs in the room, and a 19Hz sound is emanating from behind the painting at a loud volume, but it cannot be detected by the ear as it is an inaudible frequency to humans. “The Pale Horse” is a horse that appears in the Book of Revelation 6:8 in the New Testament, ridden by the Horseman named “death” and is said to be followed by Hades. The 19Hz sound is said to induce a sense of anxiety because it is a sound of a frequency that cannot be heard by the ear but is perceived by the body, and is commonly referred to as “the sound of seeing ghosts”. This work is based on a dream Tomiyasu had as a child. A battered hut and a painting hanging there. In her dream, the young girl somehow finds herself inside a painting hanging in a hut. The experience that the boundary between the world you thought you were in and the fictional world disappears and it break up your presupposed notion. This work makes the viewer aware of such unstable and ambiguous boundaries. For this who were unaware: I was run off the road on my #motorcycle back in May. Since then my bike has been in serious disrepair. That ends now. #ThePaleHorse is back in all her glory. Complete with a new paint job to commemorate the occasion. This is the first time I handled every repair by myself, which is why it took so long. Just finished painting the whole thing tonight with just one @iwata_airbrush HP-C plus #custom #biker #nofilter #airbrush #art #artist #picoftheday #artoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/BnPsTPxFauX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=46kqnpd1merf
