The Apollo 11 astronauts had an unique chance to view the Earth from a completely different perspective, most specifically, Earthrise from lunar orbit. This perspective creates a newfound appreciation for our pale blue dot, as philosopher David Loy describes: “To have that experience of awe is to, at least for the moment, let go of yourself, to transcend the sense of separation. So it’s not just that they were experiencing something other than them, but that they were, at some very deep level, integrating and realizing their interconnectedness with that beautiful blue-green ball.” To the observer, borders seem to disappear as countries flow seamlessly into one another. Like a singular organism, Earth becomes something more than a map of divisions based upon ideology and geography.  Those who share this vantage point see Earth as one ecosystem, with all parts artfully woven together to create a perfect home for millions of plant and animal species. Conflicts between nations become less apparent, and the need for a united planetary society to protect our beautiful home becomes increasingly obvious and imperative. This realization of the interconnectedness of all life on Earth and the need to protect it, dubbed the Overview Effect, has been reported among astronauts from the Apollo program all the way through to the current International Space Station astronauts. Astronauts are counted among the few who get to observe the Earth from the outside with the naked eye. For those of us on the surface, NASA continues to release stunning images and video from their Earth-orbiting spacecraft. Let’s keep their funding coming, so that all of humanity has the chance to learn about the importance of our beautiful home in space! http://www.penny4nasa.org/take-action/ Watch the short documentary “Overview” by The Planetary Collective: http://vimeo.com/55073825

NASA Earth Observatory: A Climate Archive Melts
Glaciers are natural archives of past climate. In their frozen layers lies evidence of Earth’s changing temperature and atmospheric composition. But as the climate warms, some of the longest records of our changing planet are melting away.
One such archive is the Corbassière glacier in Switzerland. #FromEarthOrbit, #PlanetEarth, #OurHomeInSpace, #TheOverviewEffect

Party night tonight for the opening of SUSIE DUREAU’s much anticipated solo show THE OVERVIEW EFFECT. Dureau says: “When I paint, as when I am close to nature, I am aware of a sense of mystery and recognition occurring in unison. It feels like an ancient legacy that is deeply rooted in my body revealing itself one mark at a time. My paintings have been described as more like biographies than depictions of places and this resonates with me. If we can begin to truly understand how we are related to the oceans and clouds perhaps we can then make the meaningful shift in consciousness which will characterise the next phase in human evolution.” Opening night is fully booked but come by till 4pm today. We’re open again Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday (during shows only) 10am-5pm. The Overview Effect
The Overview Effect: a cognitive shift referring to the experience of seeing firsthand the reality of the Earth in space, which is immediately understood to be a tiny, fragile ball of life, hanging in the void, shielded and nourished by a paper-thin atmosphere.
From space, the astronauts and cosmonauts experiencing this effect recall that from their vantage point, national boundaries vanish, conflicts that divide mankind become trivial, and realize the imperative and manifest need for mankind from all across the globe to come together and work in unity to protect this ‘pale blue dot.’
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overview_effect)
Think about it. Whenever we see a map of the earth, it’s always in some man-made medium. A political atlas, a roadmap, or somewhere in the media where the ‘boundaries’ of nations seem like tangible, legitimate cause for the division of the earth’s people.
Then look at a map of the earth from space. Nowhere do you see the line where North Korea merges into South Korea, or Libya to Egypt, or the United States to Mexico. When I did, it struck me that these anthropogenic ‘boundaries’ we create are intangible abstractions used to justify and incite conflict amongst ourselves. It’s okay for there to be different countries and their respective boundaries - land governance needs to end somewhere. But to use them as a machine of us-vs.-them mentality when it comes to world affairs, they do nothing but divide us. Forget that someone is a political American. Forget that someone is a political French. Forget that someone is a political Vietnamese. Everyone is a human being, we all inhabit the same geosphere in the universe, and we must care for each other as if we are all residing in one big house.
Because we are.
