"As glaciers melt around the globe, scientists are racing to retrieve ice cores that contain key historical records of temperature and climate that are preserved in the ice. Researchers are also pushing to gather ancient relics locked in the ice before they are lost to warming"
"Scientists are racing to save a detailed record of the atmosphere preserved in glacial ice before it melts away.
"Everyone in our community is worried,” says one."

NASA Earth Observatory: A Climate Archive Melts
Glaciers are natural archives of past climate. In their frozen layers lies evidence of Earth’s changing temperature and atmospheric composition. But as the climate warms, some of the longest records of our changing planet are melting away.
One such archive is the Corbassière glacier in Switzerland. #FromEarthOrbit, #PlanetEarth, #OurHomeInSpace, #TheOverviewEffect

ESA Science & Exploration Snaking through the landscape
#TheOverviewEffect #PlanetEarth #OurHomeInSpace #FromEarthOrbit "I have canoed and kayaked a little in South America, including the Orinoco, Casiquiare, and Rio Negro in Venezuela and the Ucayali and Urubamba rivers in Peru, but never in Colombia. I’m not sure which rivers these are, perhaps the Cauca or Nechi rivers. I love how they curve back on themselves, although I also remember how frustrating it could be to canoe all day and hardly make any distance on the map.""

NASA Earth Observatory: Tropical Cyclone Tej
#TheOverviewEffect #PlanetEarth #FromEarthOrbit #OurHomeInSpace "Tropical Cyclone Tej approached the Arabian Peninsula on October 23, 2023, where it was expected to produce heavy rain in desert regions of eastern Yemen and western Oman. The VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) sensor on the NOAA-20 satellite acquired this image of the storm at approximately 10:00 Universal Time on October 23 as it began to move over land."

NASA Earth Observatory: A Long View Of Mt. Etna
#TheOverviewEffect #PlanetEarth #FromEarthOrbit #OurHomeInSpace "The photo was taken as the space station orbited over the Black Sea approximately 1448 kilometers (900 miles) from Mount Etna, as measured from the point on sea surface directly below the station. This oblique view through the atmosphere, together with thin cloud cover, makes the coastlines look hazy and less distinct compared with images acquired when the station is directly overhead. Photos such as this one display less clarity of many surface features, but they offer a unique view of topographic highs such as Mount Etna." NASA Earth

ESA - Earth from Space: Nueva Vizcaya, Philippines
#TheOverviewEffect #PlanetEarth #FromEarthOrbit #OurHomeInSpace "A patchwork of colourful agricultural fields stand out in the centre to bottom left of the image. Areas in shades of red and green mean that the plant growth took place in May and September respectively. Fields visible in shades of blue, which dominate the image, show that the plant growth occurred mainly in March during the cool dry season." ESA - European Space Agency

Earth from Space: Bentiu, South Sudan
#FromEarthOrbit #TheOverviewEffect #PlanetEarth #OurHomeInSpace "This false-colour image, captured in January 2023, clearly shows the extent of the flooded areas around Bentiu. Information from the mission’s near-infrared channel was used to process this image so water bodies appear in dark blue or black. Sediment in the waters is bright blue, while the vibrant shades of red, mainly bordering rivers, denote vegetation."

"The bright, silvery appearance of much of the water is due to sunglint—an optical phenomenon that occurs when sunlight reflects off the surface of the water at the same angle that a satellite sensor views it. "

"Satellite radar is particularly useful for monitoring the progression of oil spills because the presence of oil on the sea surface dampens down wave motion. Since radar basically measures surface texture, oil slicks show up well – as black smears on a grey background."

NASA Earth Observatory: Another Eruption in Iceland

Hot stuff! 🌋
Satellites measured the infrared heat signature of three recent volcanic eruptions in southwestern Iceland. The first two lava flows appear black, while last week’s eruption radiates heat, which appears red/orange in this #Landsat image - #NASAEarthObservatory
