thinking about the ranch metaphor again. it's almost as if god (famously not omnipotent since shit is still fucked) was like. there's a lot of shit I can't fix but at the very least I can try to draw these lonely, chronically online goofy gay boys to each other so that their love and joy becomes an ever growing beacon of light entertainment for all the other chronically online geeks and gays who might need that positivity in their lives.

I don't get the impression Henry feels a lot of religious guilt, not from KCD1 at least. Catholicism is ever present, as it would be in 1403 Bohemia, but Henry's general approach appears more, "God may punish me when the time comes but I'm not going to punish myself overly much now." You can play him rigidly devout, I suppose, but the game rewards Henry for taking a groundedly human approach to most things.

Also I just want to say for all those who do use church to make them feel good—you're free to do that—I'm not shaming you. There is a peace and joy that I've found in faith that is beautiful, and people find it in all different places. You may be the opposite of what I was talking about—you may have grown up in a quite serious, somber environment, and yearn for lightness and simple joy. Or perhaps this is your lifelong experience of faith. I'm not saying don't go to worship concerts, etc. I just hope you also have spaces that challenge you, that are about Jesus and community rather than your own happiness—which will come and go. Make sure what you have is stable.

And if you have kids, I'm begging you to, at least sometimes, bring them somewhere that has mystery and quietness, where there are sacraments, and more complicated words. It may seem boring or pointless to them, especially at first, and if they're used to pop music —and I'm not saying torture them or force them, but give them that space. They don't need to be taught how to feel. We're born crying, it doesn't need to be cultivated. They will find God in good music on their own. What they need guidance for is knowing they have a heritage and developing their own opinions about it, so that they may come to know God, with community but on their own terms.

I don’t usually have strong averse reactions to art but seeing a painting of the holy family with baby Jesus wearing a keffiyeh and titled “Palestinian family” sure does leave a bad taste in the mouth. It’s really just the constant erasure of Jewish identity and people. Jesus of Nazareth was Jewish, as were Joseph and the Virgin Mary. And once again the appropriation of the literal Christ of Christianity as a Palestinian muslim is insane.
