Blanche de Navarre
A month after Marie's death in March 1198, a throng of barons accompanied nineteen-year-old Thibaut III to Melun, where he did homage for his lands and was knighted by the king. A year later the young count married Blanche of Navarre, the younger sister of Richard the Lionheart's widow Berengaria. Attending the magnificent ceremony in Chartres cathedral were the dowager queens Berengaria of England and Adèle of France (Thibaut's aunts), as well as many prelates and barons. The jubilation was short-lived, however, for Thibaut died in May 1201 while preparing to lead the Fourth Crusade. He left twenty-year-old Blanche a widow in the last week of her second pregnancy. For the next twenty-one years she would guide the county through the most perilous internal and external threats it had yet faced.
Whereas countess Marie clearly had possessed the requisite qualifications to act as regent â intimate connections with the Capetian and Plantagenet royal families, eleven formative years preparing to be countess, and sixteen years as countess consort â countess Blanche must have seemed singularly unsuited for such a role. A Navarrese speaker with a strong religious temperament, she had little experience as countess. She also faced an extraordinary challenge from the start: were her children, in fact, the legitimate heirs to the county? In 1190, when the unmarried Henry II left on the Third Crusade, the barons had sworn to accept his younger brother Thibaut III as count if Henry himself did not return. No one had anticipated that Henry would remain overseas seven years, marry there, and have children. Thus it was a legitimate question, in May 1201, whether Henry II's own daughters had better rights to Champagne than his brother Thibaut's infant daughter.
Blanche skillfully mastered a difficult situation. Mindful of king Philip's attempt to seize Flanders in 1191 in the absence of a male heir, she quickly made an alliance with the king the cornerstone of her regency. Within days of Thibaut's death she found Philip at nearby Sens, did homage â the first homage ever rendered by a countess â for her right of wardship and her dower lands, and promised not to remarry without his permission. As security for her conduct, she surrendered two castles bordering the royal domain (Bray-sur-Seine and Montereau-faut-Yonne) and her oneyear-old daughter to be raised at the royal court. Several days later the birth of a son, Thibaut IV, confirmed the soundness of her strategy: he was born heir apparent under royal protection.

BRIAN TYREE HENRY. HE + HIM / have you ever heard of maybe idk by jon bellion, well, it describes KYRIE WINSTON KNIGHT to a tee! the thirty-nine year old, and mixology instructor at the distillery  was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know them? would you say he is more brazen or more candid instead? anyway, they remind me of a watch and a pair of shoes to match every outfit, a laugh that could fill an entire room, a dozen or more notifications for missed calls, losing yourself the thrum of a bassline in the club, and a perfectly balanced custom cocktail, maybe youâll bump into them soon! SKEET ULRICH. HE + HIM / have you ever heard of save me by avenged sevenfold, well, it describes THEODORE JAMES âTHEOâ KING to a tee! the fifty year old, and co-owner of no regrets was spotted browsing through the stalls at portobello road market last sunday, do you know them? would you say he is more stubborn or more compassionate instead? anyway, they remind me of old flash sheets of american traditional designs, a card table and folding chairs set up at the back of the shop for a weekly dinner, intricately cross-stitched and embroidered birds, empty bottles of paracetamol piling up on a nightstand, and tattoos to cover up old scars , maybe youâll bump into them soon! Unspeakables Dark Lords and Time-Travelers Oh My! (Podfic)
Unspeakables, Dark Lords, and Time-Travelers, Oh My! (Podfic)
by J_L_Hynde
âI canât believe Iâm giving you advice,â Rowle muttered to himself, running his fingers through his short, sandy blond hair. His blue eyes met the Slytherin Head Boy's stormy gray eyes across the library table that they sat, and a grimace crossed Ravenclaw's face. âLook Riddle, Evans isnât someone to mess around with. I know he looks nonthreatening, being so short, and thin, like a gust of wind could blow him over; but if you keep fucking with him itâs your funeral.â Tom arched an incredulous brow. He looked at seventeen-year-old Theodore Rowle, all six-feet and two inches of him, and compared him to the five-foot-five fifteen-year-old Henry Evans in his mind. The fact that the Ravenclaw was in any way frightened of his small, sylphlike housemate was laughable to him when Theodore was so large and broad-shouldered in comparison. But he was. Noticeably so. Tom didnât need to use legilimency to see it. âWhy are you so afraid of him?â He wondered aloud. âBecause Iâm not stupid,â Rowle scoffed. âWeâve known each other a long time. I know what heâs capable of.â Tom leaned forward in his seat, interested. âAnd praytell, Rowle, just what is Evans capable of?â

History
Ted Knight was, in his beginnings, an immensely wealthy heir, whose wealth nearly matched his boredom at the insipid life he lived as a playboy in his native Opal City, so he rarely showed up at parties or the like, preferring to devote his time to his true passion; science. He spent vast amounts of money scouring the heavens, and ultimately found the stars themselves routinely bombarded Earth with great amounts of energy, which, unfortunately, he had no means of harnessing. Knight's cousin Sandra spoke to him about Professor Abraham Davis, a man who had built her a weapon against crime, the Black Light Ray, which she used to become invisible. Inspired to visit Davis to talk about the energy source, Knight and the Professor created a device they called the Gravity Rod, a piece of technology far ahead of its time. The rod could be used for flight, energy projection, and several other applications. As for the power source, both convened in using the stellar energy Knight had discovered. Sandra's prior adventures as the crime fighter Phantom Lady inspired Ted to take on the identity of Starman, and use the gravity rod to fight crime. As Starman, he became the defender of Opal City and a frequent ally of the FBI. He was a member of the Justice Society of America for much of the 1940s and, like other mystery men of the time, served in the war-time All-Star Squadron.
At this time, the love of Ted's life was a woman named Doris Lee, who often chastised her layabout playboy boyfriend, unaware of Ted's costumed persona. Doris was tragically murdered in 1951 while attempting to warn Ted about a plot by his archenemy, the Mist, to create a gas capable of inducing mass-madness. What made this more tragic was the fact Lee had discovered Knight's secret only a few days prior. This event, combined with Ted's role in the creation of the atom bomb, caused him to suffer a nervous breakdown. He was confined to a mental institution for a number of years as a result.
Ted was motivated to return to active duty in part by his own time-traveling sons, David and Jack, who aided him by unwittingly revealing the Mist's plan all along, with David additionally becoming a replacement Starman for the final months of 1951. It was revealed that Ted Knight had a brief affair with the first Black Canary in the 1960s, which filled in blank spots in the hero's past.
Like the rest of the Justice Society, Starman spent many years in retirement following the end of the Golden Age of heroes, but he returned to help mentor the team's spiritual successors, the Justice League of America. During his years as a civilian, Ted Knight married a woman named Adele Doris Drew, and fathered David and Jack. David idolized his father while Jack disdained the silliness of superhero life and his father's perceived focus on costumed adventure over family, after a childhood period of adoration and subsequent disillusionment. Knight's happiness would not last long, however, as his beloved wife died at a relatively young age, killed by a natural, slow-acting disease.
Starman finally sidelined from hero work permanently by the events of Zero Hour. Previously kept virile by the effects of an early JSA mission where he and his comrades were bombarded by the radiation stemming from Ian Karkull's shadows, Ted Knight was restored to an age closer to his natural one by the temporal villain Extant. He subsequently hung up the costume and concentrated on his original love, science.
Following Ted's retirement, David inherited his mantle as Starman, but was killed early in his career by the son of one of his father's old enemies. Jack then inherited the title, although not without grievances. The retired Ted Knight provided Jack with a more powerful staff, the Cosmic Rod, sometimes advised him and, over time, the two estranged Starmen reforged the bond of father and son, with Jack ultimately understanding his father's heroism. In exchange for Jack taking up the defense of Opal City, Ted agreed to use his cosmic-powered inventions for the benefit of mankind rather than simply costumed adventuring. Ted went as far as to take care of the insensate Mikaal Tomas and a gentle version of Solomon Grundy to please Jack and ensure his continued adventures as Starman.
Ted's associations were not limited to this, however. He was the first to actively attempt to communicate with Tomas after a period of several years during which he was kept chained as a circus freak. After a devastating blast that nearly killed Grundy, again, Knight valiantly ventured into the behemoth's mind to save the gentle soul he had seen save many after the blast. He made friends with one of his old, retired villains, the ageless Shade, who genuinely cared about the city of Opal. This mutual interest and love helped close the gap between the two former enemies and often prompted them to meet for friendly chat.
During Jack's adventures, he was again attacked by several super villains, among them the irradiated monster Dr. Phosphorus and the mercenary Deathbolt. During his first joust against Phosphorus, the villain had just signed a deal with Neron, and was unaware of exactly how to control the deadening of his abilities; this allowed Knight to walk away unscathed from the fight. Later on, Phosphorus again attacked Knight, but by now he had mastered his new body. This second assault, set during the Grand Guignol, left Knight terminally ill with cancer. He also managed to stave off an old enemy, the Ragdoll, and convince him to leave Opal before Simon Culp's plan came to fruition.
Ted eventually died in battle with his old enemy, The Mist. With a massive variant of his Gravity Rod, he transported them both into orbit, along with Opal City's Government and Postal Building, where The Mist's nuclear bomb could detonate without harming the city. In his final moments, he made peace with his old enemy and cheered him up. Postmortem, he met with Jack a final time, with his other son David. Knight gave his blessing to Jack to leave the Starman mantle, as well as Opal, so he could live a good life with his girlfriend Sadie and his son by the second Mist.

Favorite History Books || Marie of France: Countess of Champagne, 1145â1198 by Theodore Evergates â
â
â
â
â
Countess Marie of Champagne is known today primarily as a literary patron, notably of ChrĂŠtien de Troyes, who famously announced in his prologue to Lancelot, that since she âwishedâ him to tell the tale, he complied with her âcommand.â From that and several other mentions by contemporary writers, Marie has been cast as the animator of a âcourt of Champagne.â It is indeed ironic that, with few explicit references to her patronage, Marie is now cited more frequently than her husband, Count Henri the Liberal (1152â81), a commanding figure in his time who made the county of Champagne one of the premier principalities of northern France and whose intellectual interests are amply attested. Marie in fact was more than a cultural patron. She was ruling countess of Champagne for almost two decades in the 1180s and 1190s, initially during Count Henryâs absence overseas, then as regent for her son Henri II and as co-lord with him during the Third Crusade and his subsequent residence in Acre. From the age of thirty-four until her death at fifty-three she ruled almost continuously, presiding at the High Court of Champagne and attending to the many practical matters arising in a vibrant principality of the late twelfth century. She acted with the advice of her court officers but without limitation by either the king or a regency council. If Henri the Liberalâs crowning achievement was to create the county of Champagne as a dynamic, prosperous state, Marieâs was to preserve it in the face of several existential threats.
Historians of Capetian France have yet to appreciate the frequency and significance of wives acting in the absence of their husbands and during the minority of inheriting sons. That was a common family practice; only in a wifeâs absence was a guardian or regency council appointed. During Countess Marieâs lifetime two royal regencies were necessitated by the absence of a resident queen while the king traveled overseas: when her mother, Eleanor of Aquitaine, accompanied Louis VII on the Second Crusade, and when Queen Isabelle died in childbirth shortly before Philippe II left on the Third Crusade. In each case the king designated regents as guardians of the realm. Louis appointed Abbot Suger of St-Denis and the seneschal Raoul of Vermandois âfor the custody of the realmâ (de regni custodia), said Eudes of Deuil, while Philippe enacted an ordinance (ordinationem) granting his uncle Guillaume, archbishop of Reims, and his mother, Adèle, the dowager queen, limited authority during his absence.Âł Countess Marie, however, like most wives of princes, barons, and knights, was not burdened by a regency council. Her decisions at court and her letters patent carried the same authority as those of her husband and son, without mention of any provisional standing. Although she often associated her underage son with her in letters patent, she alone exercised the full plenitude of the comital office, even during Count Henri IIâs extended stay in Palestine, and she sealed in her own name as countess of Troyes (her only title).
Marieâs life beyond her role as literary patron and ruling countess encompassed an extensive network of family relationships, for she was connected by birth and marriage to two of the most prominent royal families of twelfth-century Europe. As the daughter of Louis VII and Eleanor of Aquitaine, Marie acquired through their second marriages numerous royal half-siblings whom she regarded as brothers and sisters: Louisâs children Marguerite of France and King Philippe II, and Eleanorâs sons Henry, Geoffroy, and Richard. Even more directly important in providing a nexus of personal support for her rule in Champagne were Henry the Liberalâs well-placed siblings: the royal seneschal Count Thibaut V of Blois (1152â91), Archbishop Guillaume of Sens and Reims (1168â1202), and Queen Adèle (1160â79, d. 1206). Marieâs seal inscribed her dual identity: âDaughter of the King of the Franks, Countess of Troyes.â

Archaeologist and New Testament scholar William Mitchell Ramsay was born on March 15th, 1851 in Glasgow.
William was the youngest son of Thomas Ramsay and Jane Mitchell, both of Alloa. Ramsayâs father died in 1857, and the family returned to its native shire to settle in a rural home near Alloa.
Ramsay went on to the University of Aberdeen and then won a scholarship at St. John's College, Oxford. There he obtained a first class in classical moderations and in literae humaniores. In his second year at Oxford, Ramsay benefited from the generosity of his maternal uncle and was able to spend the long vacation at Goettingen in Germany studying Sanskrit under a great scholar, Theodor Benfey. This was a critical period of his life: then for the first time, in his own words, he âgained some insight into modern methods of literary investigationâ, and his âthoughts ever since turned towards the border lands between European and Asiatic civilizationâ. A further stimulus was received from Henry Jardine Bidder, of St. John's, a man of incisive mind and speech, who first opened his eyes to the true spirit of Hellenism and so helped to fit him for the work which he had in view.
In the early 1880s he travelled to Greece and Anatolia to study the supposed historical and archaeological inaccuracy of the book of Acts and Paulâs epistles, hoping to disprove them, but instead he became convinced of their historical veracity. Far from bolstering the widespread belief that the New Testament was defunct as a reliable record of actual historical events, Ramsay came to trust it as a valuable piece of history. On the authorship of the Pauline epistles he concluded that all thirteen New Testament letters ostensibly written by Paul were authentic.
His interests grew to encompass the wider geography and cultural and religious history of Greece and Turkey, where in 1883 he discovered the oldest known musical composition, the Seikilos epitaph. The epitaph has been variously dated, but seems to be either from the 1st or the 2nd century.
Having become a widely recognized expert on the geography and history of Asia Minor, on St Paulâs missionary journeys to that region, and on Christianity in the Roman era, he received several honorary degrees and awards throughout his career and was knighted in 1906. He died in 1939 at the age of eighty-eight.
