i'm only attracted to women but i'm afraid that i can't live the life i want if i marry a woman. i want a nice house with a small farm, kids, basically the whole "white picket fence" package. i know logically that there are other lesbians who want that but i can't make myself believe it. i feel like i'm stuck choosing between living the life i want with a man i don't love or being with a woman i love and living a life i don't want. is this normal? does this mean i'm actually straight?

This is a really, really good question and one that I have struggled with myself. Nope, 100% does not mean you are straight. I am a lesbian and I want the same “white picket fence” lifestyle that you’re talking about, so I can confirm that just because you’re gay doesn’t mean you are choosing some ~edgy alternative path~ by default. I am fortunate enough to have a few friends with lesbian mothers so I have been able to see this to be true. hey. I've been questioning for like a year and a half, and at this point I'm pretty sure I'm a lesbian, but I can't stop feeling like relationships are only real/serious if they're heterosexual. like I emphatically don't ever want to let a man touch me or anything, but idk, it still feels... like romantic love is only really a thing between a man and a woman? idk how to explain it better, but it's really frustrating and exhausting. what can I do? I understand your worries, since that’s the kind of bs heteronormativity sells but... I’ll have you know heterosexual relationships are way less stable than homosexual ones (x)(x). In fact nearly half of females who are murdered are killed by their partners (x).

I really cannot tell you I know any happy, functioning straight couples. In my whole life I have never met a man who fully respected his girlfriend/wife. Even in the best case scenarios, they did not respect them nearly as much as their wives respect them. It’s not nearly enough. I would never date anyone who treats me the way men treat women. 

I’m sorry, I have no delusions: it goes deeper than this, it’s not all rational. But if you know how “loving husbands” treat their wives, you’d know there is no safety in a relationship with a man. In fact my personal opinion is that men are unable to love women.

Straight men don’t get married and have kids for the sake of partnership and mutual love. Men get married so they have a “wife-character” in their lives and they have kids so they have a “child-character” in their lives.

Men want women for their roles, for the things we do for them, not for who we are as people, not for our worth as humans.

By society’s standards of relationships, maybe you’re right: we don’t have the same kind of relationships. We have better ones.

Besides this, the reason society sells lesbians relationships as “not serious” is because society does not believe women can be grown up and independent if they do not have a man by their side. Society does not respect women as full, whole individuals, so of course two women together must be “child’s play”, just a “fling”, just for “fun”. 

Well I’ll have you know lesbians can have fully realized relationships. Check out [team2moms] or [livingrosa] or [thenextfamily] for example.

I’m sorry life is cheating you off of believing you can live a full, happy, perfect life, and get everything you desire out of it. You’re not stuck. Being a lesbian is not a death sentence: there is adult life as a lesbian. There are happy lesbians living in the world right now. 

There’s always a way. Your relationships will be meaningful and amazing, there is nothing straight people can share that you can not.
