masterlist
Tumblr media
"Those memories are not why I choose to stay here! I still have a purpose. I'm a Dead Boy Detective!"
Watching the Night Nurse fall into the mouth of the giant angler fish replayed in your mind over and over, practically paralyzing you. As Edwin, Crystal, and Niko look back at Charles, they're stunned, practically unable to find words.
"Why are you all looking at me like that? I did that for us"
"Charles, that was... extreme" Edwin replies.
Charles chuckles, turning to catch his breath. "That was extreme, Edwin? So was me dying at sixteen, mate. I don't wanna be dead. I hate it. But every day, I'm fucking smiling, cause who else will hold it together and keeping the spirits up? You? Are you gonna do that, huh?"
You slowly turn to face him as well, halfway listening since watching that was making your ears ring a bit. You didn't know what was different about this, as you'd seen a lot of weird shit over the years, but this was definitely one of those moments where you wanted to puke.
You felt for Charles, you really did, you understood his pain, you understood why he was so mad. But you'd never seen this side of him before. He'd never broken his happy little facade, his joy replaced by pure anger and hatred.
"What good am I doing? I couldn't stop Devlin from murdering his family over and over. I can't stop Crystal from hurting. I can't stop whatever is it going on with you. I can't stop anything!" He shouts, tears slipping down his cheeks. "I sure as hell couldn't stop my dad from beating the shit out of me" He sniffles, falling to his knees.
You cautiously walk to him, legs shaking, aching like you'd fall to yours at any moment. You slowly drop down to the damp grass, a hand softly resting on his shoulder. You slowly use your index and middle finger to tilt his chin up to look at you.
No words are shared, just a look.
His of pain and sorrow, yours heeding a silent apology and reassurance.
You look to the trio a few feet away, nodding for them to trudge away. As they do, Charles falls into your arms, attempting to choke back sobs, a river of tears falling from his eyes.
"I'm sorry" he cries, his hands testing on your arms that rest around his torso.
"It's okay," you whisper. "Everything's gonna be alright. You don't have to fix other people's problems or try and keep everything glued together. It's okay to not be okay"
He sniffles and nods, trying to catch his breath.
"It's gonna be okay"

Happy Day 2 of Cast Appreciation Week to Jayden Revri!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like George, Jayden is not on Tumblr (to our knowledge haha), but I’m singing his praises everywhere today!
Thank you for everything you’ve given our fandom, Jayden! This letter struck a particularly emotional chord for me, but I hope it still made sense despite that haha!
Our perfect Charles Rowland, we love you so much! 💜💀🔎
Transcript of my letter below the cut!
Happy Cast Appreciation Week!
October 21, 2024
Dearest Jayden,
I have no idea how I will keep this brief, but I promise to do my best! I want to start by saying that you are a beacon of light in our community; from the way you root us on and engage with us online to the lovely environment that you've curated with your streams (where I've met some wonderful people), you have made our fandom so much better. We are incredibly lucky to have you. You’re a one-of-a-kind talent and your joy reads in everything you do. Honestly, it's simply FUN watching you act; I’m not sure how else to describe it, it’s nearly impossible to watch you on screen and not be completely taken by your thoughtful, intentional expressions. All this to say, I hope you’re aware of how multi-talented you are. (You even have a beautiful singing voice!)
Now, on a more personal note.
I relate to Charles in more ways than not, and I've rarely seen a character like him - one who deals with anger, shame, and trauma - portrayed with the kind of love, care, and reverence that you gave him. So often characters like Charles, and real-life people like him, are boiled down to their worst parts, and it's ironic because that's how they see themselves, too. (Again, I know this all too well. Shame is a liar, but when it's beaten into you as a child, you cling to it like an old friend.) I cried with Charles, I felt for him, and your performance is what initially locked me into Dead Boy Detectives.
I will never be able to find the words to describe how thankful I am that YOU played our Charles Rowland. I need you to know the pivotal impact this character has had on people like me: people who rarely get to see our stories told, but more than that, rarely get to be the "Heroes" in those stories. It’s the strangest thing, really: I found myself immediately sticking up for Charles and wanting the best for him before I even knew why. In having grace for Charles, I started viewing my own shame, my own trauma, with a little more grace, too.
Because to hear, over and over again, that people like Charles are not bad... they’re loved, actually, and not just loved but also enough, is life-changing for someone who carries shame with them everywhere they go. To see a character that I relate to be told that they deserve love, even when they can't "Keep smiling for everyone," is invaluable. This character will stick with me for life. You have given us such a gift through your portrayal of Charles, and I'm deeply grateful to you. I genuinely don’t think anyone else could have done what you did with this role, and you deserve to know that the work you did was never in vain. Charles’ story matters, and thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for telling it.
I am rooting for you big time, Jayden Revri! I think the world needs more of your sunshine, more of your talent, more of your immeasurable kindness and humbleness. I can’t wait for the next “Streamden” (lol). Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for loving this fandom in the way we love you!
You are our Charles, always and forever, and we will all be here to support you (and fight for you) in all your current and future endeavors.
All my love,
Veronica “V”
@ atfsims1
(Or "Sims" as you call me on streams lmao)

20 Questions for Fic Writers
Tagged by @tiltingheartand <3 thank you!
How many works do you have on Ao3?
11!
What's your total Ao3 word count?
129,874. Brevity evidently is not my strong suit! Which is also why the rest of this is under a cut.
What fandoms do you write for?
The Sandman! I also just watched Dead Boy Detectives and think I might write a couple little things for it too.
Top five fics by kudos:
Saint Morpheus (11,882 words) - My first fic! Saints and worship
The Death of Translation (10,968 words) - the Language fic
Oaths (60,443 words) - Tam Lin AU and my precious baby. I'm so proud of this one. It's got so much of me in it. Def the first fic I would consider a full send
Border Country (6,100 words) - Clothing, the inherent body horror of being alive, and self-denial. Have always meant to do a sequel for this and may do for S2
Black Shore (3,962 words) - Monsterfucking :-) Weird little beast of a story that came out of nowhere fully formed
All Sandman, all Dream & Hob, haha. Doubt that will change with new fics unless I find a more popular pairing in a more popular fandom to write for
Do you respond to comments?
I do! I love discussing characters and theeeeemes and sharing enthusiasm with people. I love hearing what I've inflicted and I'll thank you for telling me <3 Once I started getting busier I found it a lot harder to keep up, but I treasure all my comments so if you suddenly get a reply like, a year later, you know why!
What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
It's for sure The Many Lives of Hob Gadling. Everything else I've written except Border Country has ended, like, tooth-rottingly kind and optimistic and love-filled. But lbr Dream is a man of tragedies. There'll be more
What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
It's such a personal thing, but Oaths has the happy ending I would consider most wonderful sort of happiness. It's not the fluffiest or most fairy-tale (having written just that also), but this specific flavour of joy and peace in terms of experiencing the beauty of the world around you and being just shot full of love. The happiness of growing things and sunrises. Or Just Like Love. From the Corinthian's perspective. He's so happy with the state of things at the end.
Do you get hate on fics?
Only the once! Fortunately everybody else who has hated a fic of mine has been able to find the back button and gone off to read something else or grouse about it in private, which is the correct way of things. There's no reason, ever, to tell an author you disliked their story. They will not be grateful for it no matter how certain and correct you feel in your criticisms. Nobody wins! Sorry! Go tell a friend instead.
Do you write smut?
You betcha I do! The first time I wrote it for Saint Morpheus it felt so unnatural and I was just making a :| face the whole time but now sex scenes are among my favourite things to write. I feel like I've really cum come into my own with them more than any other kind of scene.
Craziest crossover:
I've never done a crossover! I love reading them though.
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
I don't think so! I mean, not great, etc., but personally I also deeply don't care. I imagine having a job where what I am actually creating & selling for money gets stolen often sort of skews my perspective on my fic getting stolen. It's not a commercial product. It isn't paying my mortgage. I give these words for free and with love. If they end up places I never put them, so be it! Such is the internet.
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! 【授權翻譯】翻譯之死 The Death of Translation by Ethiseth. Legitimately one of the highest honours I think a fanfic writer can ever receive <3
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
No!
All time favourite ship?
Hob / the world :-)
What's a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
My very first WIP for Sandman! I started writing it then joined tumblr the next day, saw some of @messmonte's art, and was off writing Saint Morpheus in short order. Sorry 1989 canon divergence fic! Maybe one day.
What are your writing strengths?
Five dollar words. Long sentences. Big sweeping feelings. Instilling my personal values, i.e. love is real, you are surrounded by beauty at every turn, you deserve the things you want, monologues are a normal and practical form of communication, etc.
What are your writing weaknesses?
God, actually finishing and sharing things, I think. I haven't had enough time in my life lately and it kills me! But it's also such a me problem because I love to worry at and chew on WIPs forever. Writing fast would be so cool. Pew pew pew! New fics left and right. You guys would be buried in them. Man, I wish.
Thoughts on dialogue in another language?
Can run gimmicky but also I love multiple languages in one conversation as subtext so much - I'm torn. Same as accents in that I suspect it's most cases better to just note it in the speech tags, unless you're willing to go through the trouble of inline/hovertext translations, and then at that point it's a bit If You Give A Mouse A Cookie for me where I'll want translator's notes too, maybe some metatextual payoff, etc.
First fandom you wrote in?
Technically FMA, but that's a story for another day hahaha. Sandman, really.
Favourite fic you've written?
Oh golly. Oaths. I did so much for the first time with that story. But it's hard to choose, which is such a nice problem to have. I think it's easy when you've never written fic before for each new thing to mean something different to you!
No-presh tagging @wordsinhaled, @moorishflower, @tj-dragonblade and anyone who wants to do this too - just tag me so I can be nosy <3

On Tap
Sherlock insists that it would work better with the reader on top and after the night they’ve had, there’s no point in arguing. Or, the one where reader plays superhero for poor Greg and her beloved detective. Thanks for reading!
Sherlock Holmes/Reader
Tumblr media
You hadn’t even taken your shoes off when your phone started ringing in your purse. Sighing, you dug around for it with one hand and reached for the lightswitch with the other. Work had been incredibly stressful since you were working short during flu season and everyone in London had been feeling under the weather apparently. You had told your coworkers that if they really needed you that you would come back even though you had put a solid 16 hours in. Sherlock and John had gone out for John’s bachelor party so you didn’t mind working late, and Bucky was visiting his brother in the States so all your time was truly yours. You had thought about soaking in the bath or catching up on that show you always missed, but all of those thoughts were stopped in their tracks when the ringing persisted.
“Hey, what’s up?” You tried not to sound like you’d rather chew on glass than clock one more minute into the hospital but you weren’t sure you were so convincing.
“Come get him. Please, for the love of God, come get him.” At hearing Greg’s voice, you were both relieved yet confused. Sherlock must’ve invited him last minute to celebrate with them, you didn’t remember him saying that he was coming along.
“Oh, I didn’t know you went out with the boys! Where are you guys?” It was nice to know they were all having a good time. You liked Greg and thought he was a really good friend for Sherlock and John. You had plopped down on the couch and had started pulling one of your shoes off when he said, “No, I didn’t go with them. They were brought to me. Someone called the cops on them and now I’ve got tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum arguing about the solar system and taking turns puking in my waste bin. Please, I beg of you, come get him. Matter of fact, I can bring him home. If that makes the process quicker--- I mean easier.” You heard Sherlock trying to take Greg’s phone in the background, asking to talk to you and then quickly after arguing with John once more if it was really that important he knew they orbited the sun. Greg sounded just as exhausted as you felt and you could only imagine how annoyed he was by the drunk detective that he was already annoyed with most of the time sober.
“Yeah, yeah of course I’ll come get him. I’m actually at my flat though, so if you could meet me at his place that would be awesome. I’d just need a few minutes to finish up here...” You mourned the hot bath you were never going to get to take and worked on shoving the shoe you just took off back on, “did you call Mary for John?”
“Yes, she’ll be over soon. As soon as she gets here, I’ll bring Sherlock. You’re doing the Lord’s work, thank you.” With that, he hung up and you went to your room to pack an overnight bag. You were exhausted and if you had to go all the way to Sherlock’s, it would be easier for you to crash on the couch than to try to come back home late.
By the time you got to Sherlock’s, you were dragging your feet up the stairs and you could barely keep your eyes open. You had received a text from Mary when she picked John up saying “good luck” and you wished you knew what you were walking into. You had never seen Sherlock drunk, or heard any stories of him being drunk, but you were sure he was even more eccentric than he was sober. If you weren’t so tired, you’d be jumping with joy at the experience to see Sherlock so out of character.
You went into Sherlock’s room and laid out some pajamas for him and went ahead and put a water bottle and some Advil on his nightstand because you were sure he would need it. After doing that, you changed into something more comfortable too and rummaged through his fridge to see if there was anything to eat. Thumbs, unsalted butter, and milk that shouldn’t look like blue cheese was what was on the menu and you had decided sleep for dinner sounded much more appetizing. You’d go shopping for him tomorrow.
Greg had texted that he was outside but Sherlock didn’t have his key so you made your way down the steps to meet them. Upon opening the door, Sherlock looked up at you like he hasn’t seen you in ages. He stumbled towards you and held you at arms length with a look of wonder on his face. “Finally! Y/N, I was thinking I’d die from being surrounded by total stupidity, and here you are. Ever the shining light and the beacon of hope.”
You felt the heat from his stare and turned to Greg to try and keep your composure under all his attention. “Uh.. I— thank you. For bringing him home.”
Still staring at Sherlock and shocked by his outburst, Greg met your eyes with a knowing smile. “It’s no trouble. He’s your problem now. Good luck, my dear.” He was gone in the blink of an eye, leaving you with a very drunk Sherlock Holmes and a dozen steps to climb.
“Okay,” you clapped your hands together, turning towards the door, “do you think you can get up the stairs? Or do you want me to help you?”
“Don’t be an idiot,” he started until his eyes widened like he forgot who he had been talking to. It had only been a second but he saw the look that flashed across your face. You hated when he made you feel dumb because you always tried so hard to keep up with him, and he knew that. You didn’t have a chance to react before he quickly interrupted. His previous statement was immediately followed by, “I’m sorry. Forgive me. Please help me.”
You just nodded, unsure of what made him have such a quick change of heart but you were happy he did. You hated him thinking you were dumb. In comparison to him, maybe, but you were intelligent in your own right and you did a better job of keeping up with him than most. He threw his arm around your shoulders to steady himself and allowed you to lead him carefully up the stairs. He started telling you about his night and it honestly sounded like he had a great time, and so did John. You were really happy that it all worked out even if they did end up with Greg at the end of it all.
As soon as the back of Sherlock’s legs hit his chair, he was down in a clean swoop and you took the opportunity to start untying his shoes. He seemed like he was lost in thought and was quiet for a few moments but you could tell from the way he was swaying that he was too far gone to sober up before the morning.
“I already put your clothes out for you and I’ll help you to the bathroom so you can brush your teeth. You’ll love me for that in the morning.” You smiled at him as you pulled off his loafers and moved to stand up so that you could figure out how you were going to get him out of his chair.
“Will I, though? Will I tomorrow once I’m in my right mind?” He asked, and while he didn’t say it in an ignorant tone, it sounded like Sherlock, and that was close enough.
You looked at him hoping he’d say something else. But he didn’t, and he looked back at you with a look of confusion as if he was really expecting you to answer that. It seemed like just last week he was in your bed trying to convince you that he didn’t have eyes for anyone besides you and now he’s reminding you that he’s not even sure of that. Sherlock could have you at the top of the poll and then have you kissing the ground in the same hour if he tried.
“It’s just a saying. I didn’t really mean...you know, let’s— let’s just get you to bed. It’s late and you have a date with a hangover in the morning.” You could tell he was on the verge of passing out which was good in the way of no more awkward conversations but horrible in that you’d never get him into bed as dead weight. So you pushed things along and eventually got him in bed before he was out like a light.
Draping the blanket over him, you watched as his eyes fluttered behind his lids and how his lips twitched as fell into a deeper sleep and you were sure then that you would never love anyone more. You would never understand how he didn’t realize how beautiful he made the ordinary and how easily he made everything extraordinary. Afraid that you’d turn to stone if you spent any more time staring at him, you turned off his light and made your way to the living room where the the couch had never looked more inviting. It didn’t take you long to get settled in and asleep seeing as the TV in the background ended up being the perfect thing to mask Sherlock’s drunk snores and you had never been more tired in your life.
“I thought you were staying over?”
It had only been a few hours since you  had put Sherlock to bed when he found himself looking over you on the couch, wrapped up in his bedsheet.
“M’right here.” You murmured into the pillow, body still turned away from Sherlock on the couch. He was probably still drunk and you were hoping if you laid still enough he’d wander back to bed.
He didn’t respond to you, instead he continued to stand and stare with his lips pursed and brows furrowed. You had drifted back off only to be nudged awake once more.
“I won’t fit like that.” He gestured with the hand not holding the sheet to the couch, sounding exasperated like he had been explaining this to you all night. “It’ll only work if you’re on top, so get up so I can lie down first.”
You didn’t process what he said really, you just knew that if he was being persistent and you didn’t do as he asked he’d never let you go back to bed. You squinted as your eyes adjusted to the light and swung your legs off the couch, standing on stiff bones. Sherlock immediately made to get comfortable on the couch while you stood dazed and confused and he cleared his throat expectantly when he had finally got settled. He was on his back with one arm holding the sheet up between himself and the back of the couch allowing room for you to climb over and snuggle right into him.
All you could do was blink and hold his stare as he waited expectantly, still holding the sheet for you. You didn’t think he was asking you to lay with him, especially with how close you’d two be. Sure, you shared your bed before, but there was always enough room for you both to have your own space. You could tell he was getting embarrassed by your reaction, or lack there of.
“I didn’t think this would be rocket science, even for someone like you.” His nervousness was showing as he yanked his arm back down and curled into to himself like a child. You jumped into action so you wouldn’t upset him any more and shook his shoulder as you whined, partially from exhaustion and from missing the chance to sleep next to him.
“I’m tired, I’m sorry! I didn’t realize what you were asking. Come on, open up. Let me in.” You continued to shake at his shoulder until he looked back at you. He looked wrecked from drinking all night and you knew this bout of sobriety wouldn’t be as easy on him in the morning but you were sure he looked holy.
Sherlock reluctantly brought his arm up again and you wasted no time sliding under the sheet and tucking yourself under the crook of his arm. He smelled like beer and mouthwash and Sherlock and you thought you were going to go into cardiac arrest when he brought his arm back down on you, subsequently pinning you down to him. It was definitely a tight fit especially since the couch barely fit Sherlock but you had decided that if you had the opportunity to sleep with him like this every night that you would. Back pain be damned.
The steadiness of his heartbeat was already working you back to sleep. Sighing content, you let your body fully relax and sink further into him.
“You never answered my question.” He shifted next to you and kept you close to him all the same, his head leaning to rest on yours.
“Hmm?” You made an incoherent sound, your breath evening out as you fell asleep.
“My question,” he whispered more so to himself as he worked it out in his head. The feelings he found himself harboring for you were ones he had never felt before. He thought  so highly of you in a way he couldn’t understand even if he wasn’t the best at expressing it. You were patient with him when he got on your last nerve and was amazed by him when other people would tell him to piss off. You were always kind and warm and made him feel human even after he spent so long separating himself from his feelings. He couldn’t stand the idea of you looking at anyone else the way you looked at him when you thought he wasn’t looking.
So yes, he thought. Yes, he would love you in the morning. He’d love you when you’re angry with him for putting himself at risk during a case and he’d love you when you were overly tired and petulant after he made you stay up all night to keep him company in the lab. He loved that you valued him regardless of what he offered you, and that you always showed him that even if he never reciprocated it. You were never embarrassed by him, you always tried to learn about what he was interested in, and you never doubted him even when he was wrong.
Girlfriends weren’t naturally his area... but he didn’t think he would mind if it was you. He liked being close to you and physical touch wasn’t something he had sought out often before. He found that he chased the opportunity to be near you at all times. He thought you looked lovely in scrubs and a lab coat and even lovelier in your everyday wear, even if you considered it plain. He had begun to notice the way other people stared at you when you walked by and it left him with the most unsettling feeling. But then you’d smile at him and despite himself he’d smile right back and he wondered if anything in the world mattered to you besides him. Because in those moments, nothing mattered to him besides you.
Sherlock woke up alone again the next morning with the worst headache he’d ever had. Light was shining through the curtains and he cursed the sun for rising another day as he covered his eyes and groaned. Peaking through his fingers, he saw that the Advil and water had been moved to the coffee table for him and when he reached out for it he noticed the note on the table. He sat up with one hand gingerly holding his head as he read it.
“Got called into work to help the girls. John and Mary are coming over for lunch, so text me what you want me to bring home. We can’t serve our best friends buttered thumbs for lunch. I’ll see you soon!
  -Y/N xx”
He held the note in his hand, contemplating what his next move would be. You were interested in him, that he knew for sure. He’d contemplated casually mentioning to everyone that you were dating, but he technically hadn’t asked you to be his girlfriend and you two had never talked about any mutual feelings. Maybe he’d kiss you when walking you to your taxi, but he knew he’d make you stay with him instead of letting you go home. Possibly tonight when you were laying in his bed he’d tell you it had to be you, it could only ever be you.
Leaning back against the couch, he rubbed at his eyes and decided he’d call John over early and he’d help him sort it out. John always helped him. Standing up was harder than it looked apparently, as Sherlock wobbled to the side and fought the urge to puke. Perhaps he should shower first, surely you wouldn’t say yes to being his if he didn’t look his best.
He remembered how he looked and acted last night and winced. On second thought, maybe you would. You had already given yourself to him for better or for worse and soon enough, he smiled, he would give you himself in return.

My 25 Favorite Films of 2020
Well, this was quite the crazy year, especially for movies. While many films that were slated to be released this year were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year still provided some laughs, tears, and thrills both in theaters and in the living room.
(NOTE: Due to the delayed awards season calendar and postponed Oscar bait films that are unavailable to be seen before the end of 2020, this list will eventually be updated after having seen the following films: The Father, Minari, News of the World, Nomadland, One Night in Miami, Pieces of a Woman, Promising Young Woman)
Here are my 25 favorite films of the year:
25. Kajillionaire
Tumblr media
Quirky filmmaker Miranda July is back with her first feature in nearly a decade. Kajillionaire is a bizarre but captivating tale about a family of criminal grifters and how the daughter reevaluates her strained relationship with her parents after an outsider is welcomed into the fold. Evan Rachel Wood takes what could have easily been dismissed as a goofy caricature in Old Dolio (yes, that’s her name) and turns into a heartfelt portrayal of a woman whose lifestyle of freeloading dictated by her parents (played by Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins) becomes her own crisis. In many ways, Kajillionaire feels like a fantasy that keeps people asking, “What on earth is going on?” And this time, it’s for the best.
24. Freaky
Tumblr media
Revamping decades-old plots like the body-swapping antics from Freaky Friday can either result in a predictable failure or a surprising success. Thankfully, Freaky falls into the latter category. In this horror comedy, a deranged serial killer (played by Vince Vaughn) swaps bodies with his victim, a timid teen girl (played by Kathryn Newton). What makes the film work though are the dedicated lead performances, particularly by Vaughn, who is pretty convincing as young girl trapped in a grown man’s body. With a few good laughs and decent thrills, Freaky is worth the watch.
23. The Outpost
Tumblr media
The Outpost is an intense film about the real-life story of small group of US troops isolated by surrounding mountains in Afghanistan, under the constant threat of the Taliban, which ultimately comes to a head in the Battle of Kamdesh. The film captures the harrowing experiences of these soldiers with heart-pounding action sequences, which are fueled by a solid cast including Scott Eastwood, Caleb Landry Jones, and Orlando Bloom.
22. Uncle Frank
Tumblr media
Paul Bettany may be best known for playing The Vision in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he should be celebrated as his title character in Uncle Frank, a touching dramedy set in 1973 about an NYU professor who returns home to his estranged family for his father’s funeral while his niece, played by rising star Sophia Lillis, idolizes him for teaching her to be her authentic self while he keeps his sexuality a secret. Bettany brilliantly balances the coolness of his stature with the internal agony that ultimately hits a boiling point, which is counterbalanced by Peter Macdissi’s fun performance as Frank’s happy-go-lucky lover who accompanies him back home despite his wishes.
21. Hillbilly Elegy
Tumblr media
Hillbilly Elegy was panned by critics over politics that had absolutely no role the film. Based on the best-selling memoir by J.D. Vance, the newest feature from Ron Howard shows the journey of a boy who despite all odds growing up in a poor family that constantly struggled with abuse and addition managed to get into Yale Law School and achieve the American dream. While both Gabriel Basso and Owen Asztalos hold the film together as the younger and older Vance in the present and flashback scenes, Amy Adams as the impulsive, irresponsible mother and an unrecognizable Glenn Close as the no-nonsense inspiring grandmother that turn Hillbilly Elegy into an acting tour de force.
20. The Trial of the Chicago 7
Tumblr media
Oscar-winning screenwriter Aaron Sorkin sits in the director’s chair once again in this courtroom drama about the real-life protesters who showed up in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. With themes that resonate today, The Trial of the Chicago 7 benefits from its sharp screenplay, well-paced editing, and an outstanding ensemble cast that includes Eddie Redmayne, Mark Rylance, Yahoo Abdul-Mateen II, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jeremy Strong, Frank Langella, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Michael Keaton.
19. Yellow Rose
Tumblr media
Broadway actress Eva Noblezada makes her film debut as an aspiring country singer on the run after her mother, an illegal immigrant, is obtained for deportation. Yellow Rose presents a nuanced depiction of US immigration, but at the heart of it is a heartbreaking story of a young woman who struggles between putting her family or her dreams first. Between Noblezada’s powerful performance and solid original music, Yellow Rose hits all the right chords.
18. Palm Springs
Tumblr media
Move over, Groundhog Day. While the Bill Murray classic has largely monopolized the time loop film genre, Palm Springs gives it a run for its money. Andy Sandberg and Cristin Milioti star as the unlikely duo who are stranded reliving the same dreaded wedding day involving mutual acquaintances and their desperate efforts to escape the seemingly inescapable. The Hulu comedy stands on its own two feet for the good laughs, the chemistry between the two leads, and the film’s emotionally-grounded plot.
17. Let Him Go
Tumblr media
Kevin Costner and Diane Lane reunite on the big screen after playing farmer parents in Man of Steel to rancher grandparents in Let Him Go, although this time they are able to display their full acting chops. In this period dramatic thriller, they set out to find their only grandchild following the death of their son only to discover that the widowed daughter-in-law remarried into an infamous crime family. While both Costner and Lane tug at the heartstrings, it’s Lesley Manville, who plays the ruthless matriarch of the family, that really takes command of the screen. Ultimately, Let Him Go is all about family and the lengths one is willing to go to protect it.
16. Unhinged
Tumblr media
In a year plagued by the pandemic, Unhinged led the way to the revival of movie theaters back in August and perhaps in some ways it was meant to be the film to do so as the themes of a rage-fueled society and the lack of human connection carry weight. Russell Crowe stars, as the title suggests, as an unhinged psychopath whose road rage torments a woman and her adolescent son. Unhinged is the epitome of pure entertainment and is why we go to the movies. While it’s not quite the most sophisticated thriller of the year, it’s still one helluva ride.
15. Emma
Tumblr media
Anya Taylor-Joy has had quite the year with both highs (The Queen’s Gambit) and lows (The New Mutants). But it began before the pandemic with the release of Emma, which she stars as the iconic Jane Austen title character, a socialite who meddles in the love life of others while refusing to acknowledge her own shortcomings in that department. Supported with a strong ensemble cast, beautiful production design, and comedic charm, Emma is not to be missed.
14. The Invisible Man
Tumblr media
ln the era of remakes and reboots, very few are as good as Universal’s latest monster flick revival of The Invisible Man. Elisabeth Moss stars as a woman who believes she’s being haunted by her abusive ex-husband, someone she becomes convinced faked his own death and is stalking her without being able to be seen. Filmmaker Leigh Whannell, the writer behind the Saw and Insidious horror franchises, generates good thrills and high-wire tension with the help of high production value and a terrifyingly-good performance from Moss.
13. Dick Johnson is Dead
Tumblr media
Documentarian Kirsten Johnson filmed a beautiful, intimate tribute to her father Dick Johnson, who has been suffering from Alzheimer's in the final years of his life. However, instead of dreading his death, both daughter and father embrace it by having him acting out several scenes of his over-the-top demises. Dick Johnson is Dead may focus on the subject manner of death, but this documentary actually celebrates life and the laughs that happen along the way.
12. The Wolf of Snow Hollow
Tumblr media
Perhaps one of the littlest-known films of the year, The Wolf of Snow Hollow is not your conventional indie comedy horror flick. Writer/director Jim Cummings stars as an overly-heated police officer who attempts to get to the bottom of a string of murders in his small, snowy Utah town by what appears to be some sort of werewolf, though he remains unconvinced. Featuring one of the final performances from veteran actor Robert Forster, The Wolf of Snow Hollow uses its quirky sense of humor to stand out from the rest of the pack.
11. The Gentlemen
Tumblr media
The Gentlemen is a fun, action-packed, crime caper from Guy Ritchie about the London turf war of drug kingpins. Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Henry Goulding, Michelle Dockery, and Colin Ferrell all round out the strong cast, but its Hugh Grant that really steals the show as the comedically manipulative Fletcher, whose only allegiance is to himself. If you like a stylish film with well-choreographed violence and a fast-paced plot, The Gentlemen should be your cup of tea.
10. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom
Tumblr media
Some of the best play-to-film adaptations are the films that feel like you’re watching a play, and Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is one of them. Produced by Denzel Washington, Viola Davis gives a transformative performance as Ma Rainey, known as the “mother of the blues” and the clash she had with a pair of White music producers, but she also butts heads with her trumpet player (played by the late Chadwick Boseman), who also has his own music ambitions. While Davis obviously gives other Oscar-worthy performance, it was Boseman who was able to show how incredibly gifted he was as an actor. And while the world lost him far too soon, at least his last role ended up being his greatest.
9. The Kid Detective
Tumblr media
One of the biggest surprises of the year was how good a movie starring and produced by Adam Brody was. Brody plays a washed up former kid detective who attempts to revive his once-celebrated career of solving mysteries by getting to the bottom of a murder in his hometown. The Kid Detective is a brilliant dark comedy from newcomer writer/director Evan Morgan with good laughs, plenty of plot twists, and a career-best performance from Brody, who proves he’s more than just the pretty face from The O.C. we all know him as.
8. Mank
Tumblr media
Citizen Kane is widely regarded as one of the greatest films ever made and Mank is a worthy tribute. Gary Oldman stars as the title character Herman “Mank” Mankiewicz, the Oscar-winning screenwriter behind the iconic film. David Fincher (The Social Network, Gone Girl) managed to capture the epic scale of the 1941 classic that would make Orson Welles proud.
7. Soul
Tumblr media
Soul is one of those rare existential Pixar films that goes beyond being children’s entertainment. Following in the footsteps of 2015′s Inside Out, Soul depicts what happens to the soul of a jazz musician who’s convinced his time on Earth isn’t over. While the universe created to explain how souls work and the plot that went along with it falls short of its emotions predecessor, Soul is still high-caliber among Pixar films and a great movie for both kids and adults alike.
6. Another Round
Tumblr media
Perhaps the greatest work from Swedish director Thomas Vinterberg to date, Another Round follows four unsatisfied middle aged men who decide to take a theory of task from a Norwegian psychiatrist, who concluded that maintaining a blood alcohol level of 0.050 will enhance their mental and psychological state. Mads Mikkelsen, who’s best known to American audiences as Hannibal Lecter in the short-lived NBC series Hannibal and the Bond villain in Casino Royale, offers a strong, nuanced performance as one of the four educators who embraces this drinking challenge in a film that provides an equal balance of chuckles, cringes, and emotional gut punches.
5. I’m Thinking of Ending Things
Tumblr media
From the crazy mastermind of Charlie Kaufman, the writer behind Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Anomalisa, his latest on Netflix is too a mind-bender. I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a surreal, zany, and at times disturbing examination of the human condition as the nameless female protagonist played by an incredible Jessie Buckley mulls over breaking up with her boyfriend (played by Jesse Plemons) while visiting his parents’ house. Accompanied with a stellar production design and a crazy-good performance from Toni Collette as “Mother,” Kaufman newest cerebral feature lives up to his iconic reputation of filmmaking.
4. Da 5 Bloods
Tumblr media
Spike Lee is one of the few genius filmmakers who is able to blend multiple genres together and his latest film is no different. Da 5 Bloods is an action adventure, buddy comedy, dramatic character study, and war movie all wrapped up into one about a group of Vietnam War veterans who return to the former battlegrounds to find the remains of one of their fallen soldiers as well as some treasure that they kept hidden years ago. With a strong ensemble cast that includes the late Chadwick Boseman, its longtime character actor Delroy Lindo who steals the show with his powerful performance. Da 5 Bloods is easily one of Netflix’s strongest films to date.
3. The Assistant
Tumblr media
One of the first #MeToo-era films, The Assistant offers the day in the life of a low-level female staffer of a production company who is haunted by the presence of her Harvey Weinstein-like boss (who never actually appears in the film). However, rather than depicting the dramatics of sexual misconduct, The Assistant uses the common subtleties and nuances of the workplace yet maintains the same tension and heartbreak. Anchored by the remarkable, devastating performance by up-and-comer Julia Garner (Ozark), The Assistant is as important as it is well-done.
2. Sound of Metal
Tumblr media
Riz Ahmed gives the performance of his career as a heavy metal drummer and former addict whose sudden battle with going deaf upends his life. Sound of Metal is an incredible experience that gives a rare glimpse in the American deaf community which is enhanced by the remarkable sound design that helps the audience actually hear what the musician is going through. It’s truly one of the most rewarding films of the year.
1. The Climb
Tumblr media
The Climb takes the generic “man sleeps with his best friend’s fiancé” storyline and turns it on its head. In his feature debut as writer and director, Michael Angelo Covino leads as the not-so-apologetic adulterer Mike and Kyle Marvin, who co-wrote the film, is the good-hearted Kyle who struggles to whether or not to forgive his best friend’s ultimately betrayal. Not only is The Climb is quirky and hilariously written, it’s a remarkably well-made comedy with some of the year’s best cinematography. Between a strong cast, a superb screenplay, and the extremely-high production value, The Climb is at the top of the mountain of 2020′s best films.

Fake Dating: Kyoutani
A/n: He’s a good boy who needs more attention, also he was kinda hard to characterize :/
G/n reader
Tumblr media
Kyoutani Kentarou
Your first encounter with Kyoutani was when you woke up late for school and ran into him on your way to class
Literally, you ran right into him
You’re both on the floor before you jump up, and without thinking pull him up with you
He’s looking pretty startled as you start apologizing
I mean, don’t you know that you should run away from him, not start talking about your broken alarm clock making you late..?
Apparently not, you continue to ramble and he’s not sure what he’s supposed to do
You end up talking about the school’s volleyball team?? For some reason???
But now he’s kinda interested, so he’s asking questions and you’re answering
And sure, it ends up being mostly arguing, with both of you yelling in the halls, getting to the point where a teacher hears you and comes out
Now you both have detention
But it was a very entertaining conversation✨
You’re excited to talk to him again
The teacher in charge almost gives you another day of detention with how much yelling there is happening
Y’all become the strangest pair of friends
Like he’d definitely do anything for you🥺he’s still teasing you over every little thing though
Wrestling!!
It’s really fun with him and you loose nearly every time
He’s very gentle when you have these pretend fights
His top priority is making sure you’re safe
You get pretty strong from all the wrestling
There’s also a ton of playful shoving
The team has no idea what to make of mad dog and you
When they first saw you hanging out together, they all had a simultaneous heart attack
It becomes a regular thing seeing you hang out with him, heart attacks turn into proud smiles at him interacting with you
Yahaba is jealous and tries to flirt whenever you’re around, Kyoutani drags you away from him every time he does it
He doesn’t wanna be embarrassed by the team around you
Some of them (cough, cough, Oikawa) think you’re dating
He’s always bringing up how cute he thinks you’d be together and if you wanna tell him anything then he’s all ears!!
He gets invested in y’all
His own love life is currently empty and he’s putting all of his attention onto yours
You actually get an idea from all of Oikawa’s insistent poking around
Why not... pretend date??
LISTEN YOU JUST THINK IT’D BE FUN TO MESS WITH HIM
Plus, Oikawas kinda got the whole team into it and now they’re always messing with Kyoutani
You can tell it annoys him
So ✨revenge time✨
And people think you’re the sweet one in your friendship
If only they knew of the chaos inside, smh
Kyoutani completely refuses at first, especially since it seems as if you’re giving them exactly what they want
But then you bring up all the things you can do to the team if they think you might for real be dating
And he’s scared of how well thought out it is
Kyoutani reluctantly agrees
He has to admit, it’d be hilarious to make the team freak out with what you have planned >:)
You two really look like a couple of grinch’s when walking into the gym before volleyball practice the next day
The team doesn’t notice whats off until Iwa points out the hands you have interlocked with each other
Oikawa is SCREAMING he knew it!
He faints when you give Kyoutani a kiss on the hand and skip off to class
Kyoutani just acts like nothing happened and goes to warmup
No one is sure what’s going on
Iwa tries to ask if he’s dating you, before he can though, Oikawa is back to life interrupting him
“I was right! I knew it! Please, my precious mad dog-chan~ enlighten me as to when you got together with Y/n.”
Kyoutani looks Oikawa dead in the eyes, “I don’t know what makes you think we’re together.”
The gym goes silent
He’s spluttering, pointing at the hand you kissed, “Wh- what do you mean?! Y/n-chan kissed your hand!”
“What’s your point, they’re always like that. Are you seriously only noticing that now?”
He says it so seriously that everyone is having an inner crisis, from discovering they had not payed enough attention to you and your habits
It’s not like they never see you doing touchy-feely things with Kyoutani
They’ve seen you have aggressive shoulder bump contests...
Oikawa can’t believe this, he refuses and proceeds to bug Kyoutani for the next ten minutes
Iwa has to practically pull Oikawa off him, grumbling they had things mixed up
You’re cackling behind the gym doors, having happily listened to the whole thing
This is kept up for weeks
The both of you subtly continue to do things that are seen as signs of you dating by Oikawa, while coming up with increasingly convoluted reasons as to why you were doing them
You’re killing Oikawa, you’re literally killing him😭
It’s driving him nuts and he is going full detective mode
Every little nickname you have for Kyoutani is being hyper analyzed
He’s watching for any sweet gestures that go too far
Even Oikawa’s most devoted fans are concerned at this point
Kyoutani and you have gotten really close, not that you weren’t close before, it’s just different now
The softer teasing you have to mess with the team, is making you both blush
Small gestures making sure you’re feeling okay or just brightening each others day with each other’s favorite drinks
You’re doing all the mushy stuff that freaks people out, and it’s not always in front of the team
Going out to have study sessions together that end in goofing off, are pretty common
It’s all nice and he makes you super happy
Maybe you have feelings for your friend...
It doesn’t mean you’re going to do something about it😡😤
And maybe Oikawa is resorting to drastic measures to get you two to admit you’re dating
You were just trying to grab something for the team, before heading to your own club activities
Oikawa said it was supposed to be on the top shelf, yet you couldn’t find what he needed??
Turning when you hear someone come in, opening your mouth to ask if they can help, only to be interrupted by the door slaming shut
“I’m not letting either of you out till you admit to dating!! Or at the very least say you’re in love!!! I’m not picky okay?!”
You didn’t know what to say, other than, “Oikawa! I’m gonna throw a vollyball at your head so hard you forget what it is!!”
You know who’s in the room without looking
Someone had to let you out eventually
Except, after an hour of nothing, you realized that was not the case
What were you supposed to do? Your friend looked pissed, he was missing practice because of this
Who knew how long the team captain would keep you two in here
Without realizing it, the feelings you had been suppressing for weeks on end, we’re finally coming tumbling out
“I LIKE YOU.”
You’re standing while you bang on the door, Oikawa’s muffled screeches of joy the only sound you hear, besides your beating heart. “Now open the door.”
Turning to a wide eyed Kyoutani, you clear your throat
“We should stop this all.. now that you know,” you bite your bottom lip, voice cracking. “Sorry for not telling you sooner, I guess I wanted to pretend a littl-
“I like you too.”
Your speechless
Was Oikawa secretly the best wingman??
Wait no, that couldn’t be right, he might just be saying that to get out
“You don’t have to lie if you don’t feel the same way.”
You turn away only to be stopped and turned back around by a pair of strong arms
“I’m not lying dummy, I like you.”
When you’re let out of the room, nearly ten minutes later, you do it with your hands interlaced with your boyfriends
You thank Oikawa
Then you give him a twenty second heads up to run

Editor’s Note: TV moves on, but we haven’t. In our feature series It Still Stings, we relive emotional TV moments that we just can’t get over. You know the ones, where months, years, or even decades later, it still provokes a reaction? We’re here for you. We rant because we love. Or, once loved. And obviously, when discussing finales in particular, there will be spoilers:
There was a time when Veronica Mars’ legacy was that of a beloved cult show that was canceled too soon by network executives who didn’t understand it. With the arrival of a crowd-funded feature film in 2014, its legacy evolved as one of the first shows to see the benefits of a revival. Now, it simply brings thoughts of sadness, rage, and betrayal.
When Hulu first announced it was reviving the series for an eight-episode fourth season, the news was met with resounding joy from a vocal and passionate fanbase that had never given up hope it would return after the crowd-funded feature film reunited Kristen Bell’s Veronica, a pint-sized private eye with a sharp mind and even sharper wit, with her one true love, the reformed bad boy Logan Echolls (Jason Dohring). But the fire that had burned for more than a decade and twice-revived the show was suddenly extinguished in a single, heartbreaking, and wholly unnecessary moment when Logan was killed by a bomb left in Veronica’s car shortly after the couple exchanged wedding vows.
Tumblr media
I can still remember the shock I felt when I reached the end of the screeners Hulu sent. The whole thing felt kind of surreal, like if I didn’t acknowledge what had happened out loud maybe it didn’t actually happen. But it did happen. And I’m still filled with a fiery rage and a deep sadness when I think about it now, nearly two years removed from the episode in question, because needlessly killing Logan was a betrayal of the worst kind. The character’s untimely demise felt engineered for nothing more than shock value, like it existed only to leave Veronica even more isolated and cynical. But the interviews that series creator Rob Thomas gave in the aftermath, in which he tried to defend the decision, revealed something much worse while only driving the knife he’d stuck in fans’ backs deeper.
“In order for us to keep doing these, I think it needs to become a detective show—a noir, mystery, detective show—and those elements of teenage soap need to be behind us,” Thomas told TV Guide of the decision to kill Logan, noting that he also hoped to take Veronica out of Neptune and on the road in potential future seasons. “I sort of viewed these eight episodes as a bridge to what Veronica Mars might be moving forward.”
Tumblr media
Instead of being a bridge to the future, it was a bridge to a grave of Thomas’ own making. Not since How I Met Your Mother ignored literal years of character development to deliver a half-cooked series finale the creators had come up with several years prior has a show felt so out of touch with its characters, the story it was telling, and its fans. Thomas’ decision to kill Logan is the perfect example of a creator being unable to recognize their own biases to the detriment of their creation.
He wrongly believed that Veronica needed to be hardened by years of nonstop torment and trauma in order to prove she was a great detective whose story was worth continuing. In putting her through the emotional wringer (again) after spending the entire season attempting to dig into her flaws and determine the root of her problems, Thomas swiftly undermined his heroine and her trauma with one misguided act of devastating violence. The fact that Thomas then chose to also skip over Veronica’s grieving process entirely reveals how little he ultimately thought of Logan or Veronica’s relationship with him, which had pushed her to be better and work through her longtime trust issues.
Tumblr media
It is common knowledge by now that Logan was not intended to be Veronica’s love interest when the show debuted, but the fans took to the character more than they took to Teddy Dunn’s Duncan “He Used to Be My Boyfriend” Kane, so the latter was jettisoned from the show after Season 2. And in the end, Logan turned out to be a much better partner and match for Veronica’s personality. So what’s truly unfortunate about Thomas killing Logan, and killing him so violently, is that his thought process during Season 4 has the potential to color everything that happened in the show up until the moment the bomb went off. There is also the issue that Thomas apparently believed that Veronica achieving some level of romantic happiness was a one-way ticket to the grave, as if shows like Friday Night Lights hadn’t already soundly debunked the myth that happy couples did not make great TV.
Obviously an emotional family drama does not play by the same rules as noir, but Veronica Mars had already proven that you don’t need to play firmly within the sandbox of the genre to excel creatively. So why should the more adult version of the show attempt to put itself back in the box to be confined to something more traditional or stereotypical? Furthermore, love and contentment are not character flaws or weaknesses. They are not an element of “teenage soap,” as Thomas put it. In fact, one could argue that by allowing herself to believe that she and Logan could have a happy future together regardless of everything she’d witnessed in her line of work, Veronica had shown more personal and emotional growth in the show’s fourth season than she had in the entire run of the series.
Tumblr media
At the heart of the matter, though, is one simple, glaring truth: Logan’s death was a fundamental misreading of the entire Veronica Mars fandom and what they liked about the show. Storytelling should never be dictated by the fans and their desires—one of the loudest and most common complaints critics had about the movie was that it felt too much like Thomas was just giving the fans what they wanted rather than attempting to tell a good story—but when your fandom has dug their hands into the cold soil of the TV graveyard to raise your show from the dead, you should probably have a grasp on what exactly the fans like about it in the first place. After all, they’re the reason you still exist and will be one of the final arbiters of whether or not you get to continue to exist in the future. And the idea that fans would somehow be interested in watching a version of Veronica Mars in which Veronica was on the road, completely alone, and Logan was blown to bits is just a wild miscalculation.
Tumblr media
This isn’t to suggest Veronica Mars could not ever survive without Logan. That would be to undercut the rest of the show and the woman Veronica has become since we first saw her cutting Wallace (Percy Daggs III) off the flagpole in the series’ pilot. But there is a difference in writing Logan out of the show’s ongoing story arc—his secretive Naval career offered the perfect out—and violently killing him in an attempt to shock viewers and show just how resilient your heroine is in the face of trauma. A survivor of rape who had to solve the murder of her best friend (Amanda Seyfried) while still in high school because the sheriff’s department was too inept to do it (or simply did not care to do it), Veronica had already been through more in her young life than anyone should ever have to live through.
Although Logan’s death led to her finally seeing a therapist, it seemed to be a one-time thing, so nothing has really changed. Veronica is still the same person she was before the show returned, except now she’s also a widow and Thomas has alienated an entire fanbase to the point that many fans, though likely not all, have no interest in revisiting her story. And they’re not likely to either, since Hulu chose not to move forward with another season.
So much for that bridge to the future.

Fandom: JJK Ship: Chuuya/Dazai Character: Nanami
AIGHT LET’S GET INTO IT
001 | Jujutsu Kaisen
Favorite character: SON OF MY HEART AND BOY OF MY LIFE YUJI ITADORI
Least Favorite character: sukuna >:c
5 Favorite ships (canon or non-canon): yuta/rika, satosugu, nobamaki, um. uh. i don’t know if i have five. *sweats.*
Character I find most attractive: i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: christian gray wants what kento nanami has
Character I would marry: i’ve said it before and i’ll say it again: kento nanami is the dilf of all time and if you disagree you are playing yourself
Character I would be best friends with: my irl best friend is essentially a carbon copy of nobara kugisaki, so definitely nobara 😊
A random thought: cursed speech is the coolest fucking curse technique and i go feral every time inumaki gets to use it
An unpopular opinion: my most unpopular opinion is that i’m not all that into fushidori but that is entirely a personal thing and not at all, like, a condemnation of the ship at all, if that makes sense??? like i think it’s a good ship that the text 100% supports, i’m not saying i don’t like it bc it feels ooc or anything, bc it absolutely doesn’t, and there’s all kinds of Symbolism that backs it up, too. i just typically don’t really tend to ship my faves bc you know. hashtag just aro/ace things.
My Canon OTP: YUTA/RIKA MY BELOVED
My Non-canon OTP: SATOSUGU MY BELOVED
Most Badass Character: nobara “let’s play a game of chicken” kugisaki
Most Epic Villain: there are a lot of good ones in jjk tbh but i think it’s gotta be sukuna for me. what the fuck are you planning you bastard.
Pairing I am not a fan of: uh damn well while i’m raining on people’s parades, lol, i’m also not really into yuta/inumaki. again, not because i think it doesn’t make sense or anything!! it super does!!! but also yuta is in deep, pure, everlasting love with his monster gf and i just can’t bring myself to care as much about yuta/inumaki as i care about yuta/rika.
Character I feel the writers screwed up (in one way or another): look into my eyes. gege akutami has never done anything wrong in their life, ever. (at least not in terms of characterization, lol.)
Favourite Friendship: i cry noble tears of joy every time the main trio interacts in any capacity.
Character I most identify with: he’s a much better person than i am and way like cooler and stronger, etc, but i do identify with yuji bc he is the same brand of stupid as me and it’s nice to see someone with terminal dumb bitch disease represented in media.
Character I wish I could be: Bakery Girl, iykyk
002 | Soukoku
When I started shipping them: i think i started like shipping-shipping them when i watched dead apple.
My thoughts: did you really think you were going to give me a character who has a power that could kill him and another character who is the only one who can keep that power from killing him and i wasn’t going to end up fully, madly and deeply invested in them?
What makes me happy about them: i’m a chuuya simp so this is a chuuya-centric answer, and i talked to you about this already, but i always love it when a character who has the huge, op powers gets to feel protected by someone else. chuuya is the best martial artist in the port mafia, he can manipulate gravity, and he’s able to go sicko mode via corruption; he’s a fucking atom bomb. but because dazai can nullify his powers and pull him back from the brink of literal self-destruction, chuuya doesn’t have to be the protector in their relationship; he gets to trust that someone is going to catch him when he falls.
What makes me sad about them: moving on from the port mafia and joining the armed detective agency is clearly what’s best for dazai and he absolutely seems happier and like he has more of a purpose with them, but it makes me sad that him leaving also kind of sets chuuya adrift. chuuya has been dazai’s partner for as long as he’s been a member of the port mafia, since he was 15 years old; he essentially left his previous gang, who looked up to him and trusted him, to partner up with dazai. so then when dazai just leaves and breaks contact one day i’m sure it not only hurts like hell, but also makes chuuya question whether dazai ever cared as much for him as he did for dazai and what he’s even doing with the port mafia in the first place.
Things done in fanfic that annoys me: i haven’t yet read enough fanfic for things to start bothering me.
Things I look for in fanfic: major character death and grief/mourning are literally the tags i search, lol. i am who i am.
My wishlist: if i can be frank, at this point in the narrative i just want these guys to have some hatesex, lol. The One Where Dazai Hooks Up With His Ex.
Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: i think ultimately kunikida is probably a healthier match for dazai, lol. chuuya is my fave so, again, having a hard time shipping him with anyone else. i feel like he’s the kind of person who really wouldn’t be interested in romance unless it was as deep and encompassing as what he has with dazai, and it doesn’t seem like anyone else in the canon so far comes anywhere close to that.
My happily ever after for them: i guess ideally chuuya would eventually either 1.) become the new boss of the port mafia and form some sort of alliance with the armed detective agency or 2.) he’d join the ada. either way he and dazai would Talk It Out and reach an Understanding, and even if they didn’t end up back together romantically they’d be like back on good terms with each other, and chuuya would get to feel protected again and dazai would get to feel Challenged.
003 | Nanami
How I feel about this character: I’m Aro/Ace But When I Tell You I Would Fully Become A 1950s Housewife For This Man,,,,,
Any/all the people I ship romantically with this character: you are probably getting tired of hearing this lmao 😅 but i don’t….. really ship him……. with anyone………. (except, of course, for me). i don’t hate nanami/higuruma but the canon compliant bitch inside of me can’t really get fully behind it. i could see him and bakery girl being cute if they decided to flesh her out and go that route 🙂
My favorite non-romantic relationship for this character: his mentorship of yuji 🥺
My unpopular opinion about this character: i feel like nanami is the kind of character that’s easy to kind of fall into the shorthand of characterizing as Stuffy and Boring and Proper, etc, but he honestly isn’t any of those things? he’s, like… quiet, lol. a little blunt, sure. massively depressed. but his entire philosophy about corporate jobs is that you should milk them for all that they’re worth without working a second you’re not being paid for; he has a lot of the same issues with the jujutsu world that gojo does and he helps train yuji while he’s Supposed To Be Dead, so it’s not as if he’s some kind of strict rule-follower or anything; he’s a foodie and he loves bread 🥺; he had an emo haircut as a teen so you canNOT convince me his taste in music isn’t fire.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon: i wish we had gotten to see him interact more with geto, especially post-[spoiler].
Favorite friendship for this character: it’s a tie between haibara and gojo; i think they’re both very important people for him to have had in his life in different ways.
My crossover ship: he could easily be swapped out for kunikida in bsd, i doubt dazai would even notice.

Top 5 Best Executed Deaths
A few weeks ago, I did a list talking about the Top 5 Character Deaths That Made Me Side-Eye the Writers and I thought it was only fair that I talk about some of the character deaths that I thought were actually done well. So consider this like a companion to that list.
Like I said in that T5F, this is TWDG, a game series all about people surviving in a world overrun by zombies. Naturally, characters are going to die. Some of these characters get pretty shitty deaths that only happened to fill a quota, some had effort and thought put into them and how they were going to effect the story and remaining characters. These are deaths that served their purpose, progressed the story, or are an understandable conclusion to a character’s arc.
Do keep in mind that when I say that I enjoy the way these were done/handled/portrayed/whatever, this isn’t me taking joy outta watching these deaths play out. Hell, I kinda hate most of the deaths on this list, but just because I don’t want this character to die or I wish they stuck around longer doesn’t mean I can’t recognize when it’s executed well, y’know?
5. Larry and the meat locker incident
Tumblr media
So.... Larry’s an asshole, y’know? He made it on another T5F because he sucks. No one likes Larry.
He treats Lee like garbage, treats his own daughter terribly, and is overall just a piece of shit. That being said, he played his role well. He did what he needed to do which was be a antagonistic character within the group who posed a threat to Lee by threatening to expose his past. He creates a lot of tension within the group, he puts all this pressure on Lilly, you can’t even attempt to show any kindness to him because he doesn’t care about anyone but himself and Lilly.
That being said.... his death scene is pretty good. Y’know, you play through ep2 for the first time and you’ve just discovered that these people are cannibals and they have you locked in a fucking meat locker so they can butcher you later, and Larry is freakin’ the fuck out because he’s pissed. Lilly is sick in the corner, Kenny is desperately trying to find a way out because they have his family, and Clementine is terrified, and Lee is just waking up.
You go over and try to calm Larry down because he’s pounding at the door and this dude.... this bastard has the gall to be like “Fuck you, you must really hate me! I’m plannin’ on bein’ around waaaaaay after you’re dead! I’ll be the one to put you down!”
Then he has a heart attack.
And you’re stuck in this meat locker with him. You don’t know if he’s alive or not-- Kenny immediately deems him dead, Lilly is desperately trying to resuscitate him, and they’re both yelling at you. You gotta decide if you’re gonna help Lilly try to bring him back, or if you’re gonna help Kenny make sure he doesn’t turn.
Not matter what you do, Kenny smashes Larry’s head in with a damn saltlick because I guess he missed the opening of the episode where they remind you that your actions have consequences.
Larry’s death has lasting effects on your relationships with both Lilly and Kenny, though more so Kenny since no matter what, Lilly loses it a little and ends up murdering Carley/Doug and leaving the group. But boy, Kenny will never forget the time you didn’t wanna play hero with him and smash a guys head in right in front of his daughter.
It’s a damn good scene, I gotta hand it to ‘em. I hate Larry and I can’t say I miss him, but I can definitely see both sides of the argument on what to do there. Plus it’s... I dunno, a creative death? and I kinda like that? No one else is out here getting their heads done in with a saltlick, y’know?
Anyway, Larry sucks but his death? Well done.
4.  Minerva and the tragic showdown on the bridge
Tumblr media
Oh man, I really am digging my own grave with the Minnie crowd lately, huh? Ah well, I’m sure it’s fine.
Listen...okay, look. I have a lot of feelings about the bridge scene. On one hand, I hate it. On the other hand, I kind of love it?
Like, does it piss me off that Tenn dies here because I trust AJ? Yep. Do I still wish they had maybe put Lilly here so that she could actually do her job as a villain? Sure. Does it upset me that AJ ends up shooting his best friend in order to save Louis? Totally. Does it annoy me that Minerva just won’t fucking die even though I shot her and the walkers keep nom noming her? Absolutely.
That being said, I can’t pretend that Minerva’s death isn’t pretty great.... which I know will upset the Minnie crowd who always talk about how it’s bullshit she died here and she deserved a redemption arc... but lemme explain.
Looking at the game itself, the text and story progression, Minerva was never going to get that. She was never set up as someone we were gonna “fix” or as someone who would have a change of heart and switch to our side. From the moment we meet her, she’s too far gone. The delta have their claws sunk deep within her, they brainwashed her, forced her to murder her own sister, and she has completely given up. She never expresses any desire to go back to the school. Nope, the delta is her home now. Her family. And it’s tragic. She and Sophie proof of what would happen to the Ericson crew if the delta go ahold of them-- “which twin will you be?” y’know?
She fucks us over instead of actually helping us, we escape, the boat explodes, but Minerva doesn’t go down with the boat. Nope, she makes it to land and well... she fucking loses it. She sees her delta family get taken out by walkers and she goes nuts with her gun and gets half of her face chewed off by a walker.
So yeah..... she’s dead. Almost. They try to act like we’re supposed to believe that she’s really dead after she gets surrounded by walkers and throws the grenade at Clementine and all that but c’mon.... unless I see a body or a walker version, I don’t believe shit.
Which brings me to the bridge.... there’s a lot of dread building up to Minerva’s final appearance, and you just hear her singing the damn song and bringing a bunch of walkers with her. Not to mention that she already looks dead. She looks like a walker who can talk, and not gonna lie, I like it. It’s freaky and sad and fucked up and adds so much to her character at this point. I mean, she’s here to kill Tenn so that they can all be a family again. She’s smiling and relieved that she’s dying and boy she just can’t wait to take Tenn with her and it’s not great.
She’s here to die and to take someone down with her, and she’s not leaving until she does. Hell, if she can take Clementine out, that’s just a bonus at this point.
ALSO can’t forget that if AJ does shoot and kill Tenn, Minerva is still alive as she’s being eaten by walkers and she looks so damn happy as she reaches out and says, “Yes, come with me...”
Like..... it’s so fucked, and I hate that I love it. From a storytelling standpoint, it’s a fitting death to conclude Minerva’s character and it impacts everyone there in more ways than one.
3. Duck and incredible emotional impact
Tumblr media
Oh, Duck... poor, poor Duck.
This one has stuck with me and I hate it. I was never one of those players who hated Duck from the beginning. It’s interesting to go back and see how people reacted to him in the first couple episodes because a lot of them didn’t like him. They found Duck to be annoying, loud, stupid, and would even wonder “yeesh, when can I kill this kid?”
Which is yikes but not gonna get into that right now.
But from my understanding, Telltale got wind of this and knowing they were gonna kill him off, were like “Okay, y’all dumb, so here--” and they added in that little segment with Detective Duck where he helps Lee figure out what’s been going on with the stole meds. It’s a cute scene where we get to hang out with Duck and he proves that he’s not stupid, he’s just... y’know, a child.
Then the motor inn gets attacked, shit goes down after they escape, and it’s revealed that Duck was bitten.
Oh man, let me tell you about emotional impact both on the characters and the player because wow.
Duck’s death is slow, drawn out...and since it’s early in the series, there’s a lot of denial, mostly from Kenny. They find the train and Kenny fixates on it because to him, if he gets it working and they can just get away, Duck can recover. Duck isn’t like the others, he’s just a little sick and everyone is making a big fuss about it.
Then you have Katjaa, who starts out in that denial stage but she moves into acceptance a lot quicker than Kenny does and well.... that might be because she made up her mind about what she was going to do, which that is a whole other layer of fucking despair to this situation.
They also do something that I like with Kenny by adding that depth of him believing he had something like this coming after what happened at Hershel’s farm. Y’know, when he grabbed Duck and took off, leaving Shawn to die? Yeah that.
He’s been so adamant about protecting his family to the point where he doesn’t have anything for the rest of the group, aside from Lee if he helps kill Larry. He did what he could to keep his wife and child safe and in the end, it didn’t matter. Duck still got bit, and now everything is shit.
Then when you thought it couldn’t hurt even more, you find Katjaa dead in the woods and you still have to take care of Duck, whether you have Lee shoot him or have Kenny do it, or even just leave him to turn. Either way.... Duck’s death is just one big ol’ despairing oof.
It’s really good, guys. The music, dialogue, scenery, the pain....They really nailed Duck’s death in such an emotional way and it doesn’t just end there. This sticks with Kenny all the way through S2 and changes him as a character. It impacted Clementine and Lee greatly because this kickstarted Chuck telling them that Clem would end up just like Duck if things didn’t change.
S1 just... knew how to kill off its characters... well, for the most part.
2. Marlon and the death that had to happen whether we like it or not
Tumblr media
Sigh.... okay.
So... Marlon. Lemme tell you some things about Marlon’s death.
First, I hate it. Nothing new there. If you know anything about me, you know that I am vocal in my desire for the Marlon redemption arc, for the “Marlon lives” AU’s and the “Marlon lives longer but dies differently” AU’s. I like Marlon as a character, I find him to be a fascinating character study. Ray Chase’s performance as Marlon brings so much personality and I love it.  So naturally, I wanted more of him in TFS.
Here’s the thing. I may want all of those things, I may take a lot of joy from discussing these ideas with you guys and coming up with different scenarios,  theories, AU’s about him, and I’ll always be the first one to be like “I hate that Marlon dies in ep1, I wish AJ hadn’t shot him! Woulda liked for him to stick around longer!”
But with the story TFS is trying to tell, Marlon has to die. AJ has to shoot him. I don’t like it, you don’t like it, no one likes it.... but that’s just how it is.
Marlon is presented to us as this chill and genuine guy trying to keep his group safe and together. He feels the pressure of being responsible for all the lives in this school and that’s a lot to put on a teen growing up in the apocalypse.
Then we learn that hey, the twins didn’t die. No, last year they ran into Abel and Marlon made a deal with him where he traded the twins in order to save himself, Brody, and the rest of the school. He wanted to plan a rescue mission, but he was too scared, so he and Brody kept it to themselves. They made up a story about the twins dying and moved on, but that continued to weigh down on them.
Then Abel comes back, Brody freaks out, tells Clementine the truth, and Marlon hits her so hard that it kills her.
And it gets worse.
You go through the whole confrontation with Marlon trying to cover his ass and blame Clementine for Brody’s murder, he’s waving AJ’s gun around and threatening to shoot Clem while everyone is gathered around watching. It’s raining, it’s super dramatic and tense and I love it.
In the end, Marlon gives up and he just wants to leave. Let him become a bad memory, he’ll never come back, just let him go.
Then AJ shoots him in the head unprompted. He just.... he just does it and then wonders why everyone is looking at him like he’s a murder baby.
Marlon’s death is crucial, not just to kickstart the plot but also for AJ’s character arc. His death affects everyone in that school. It makes Clementine question herself and if she’s raising AJ right, it breaks Louis’ heart, it pisses off Mitch, it sets Violet off on her bullshit. Everyone is hurting and confused because they don’t know what to do. Marlon is dead and AJ, this tiny toddler, was the one who pulled the trigger.
From the beginning, we’re told that AJ is always listening, watching, and what we do will affect him for better or worse.... and maybe you don’t think much when you tell him to always aim for them head, but when he says exactly what you taught him after murdering Marlon...? Yeah, you’re sitting there like “Well, fuck.”
But if this didn’t happen, if AJ didn’t kill Marlon, then.... there’s not a lot left. Sure the raiders are still coming, but AJ no longer has to go through what he has to or realize how much he hurt everyone. He’s no longer on that path that made him such an interesting and layered character.
Sure, you coulda made him shoot someone else, but the fact that it was Marlon is what made it impactful.
Ugh, it’s good and I hate it. I hate it so much.
1. Lee and the death that broke all our hearts
Tumblr media
.......Just-
Tumblr media
-y’know?
What else is there to say?
Well, alright, I’ll explain.
We play as Lee in S1, we go on this whole journey with him and develop him as a character, establish relationships, and care for Clementine. He’s a great character. I did a list on why he’s great, too, if you wanna check that out but all you really need to know is that we all loved Lee.
Lee’s got a lot of baggage, given that he was on his way to prison for murdering the dude who was sleeping with his wife. But then the apocalypse happened and he got a second chance to do some good... or I guess bad? if you do a scumbag Lee run?
Anyway-- no matter what, he cares for Clementine and it’s nice to see them bond over the course of the season... so when shit hits the fan and Clementine gets kidnapped by the Stranger, we’re just as upset as Lee is.
Then Lee gets bit.... and we realize that even though he’s our playable protagonist, he was never safe either. He gets bit and I can still remember the feeling of like... a bowling ball dropping in my stomach and my heart hurting because no... no, no, not Lee. I basically became Kenny like “No, he’s different! Lee isn’t gonna die! Being bit doesn’t mean death!” and while that is technically true.... had to face it: Lee’s going to die by the end of the season.
Ep5 of S1 is a whole journey... We’re dealing with trying to save Clementine while seeing Lee get worse and worse-- he’s passing out, he’s growing paler and slower and it’s hard to watch. You maybe get a little bit of hope if you decide to cut his arm off, but that’s just... it’s too late for that.
Not only is he fighting this, but then you got Ben who gets impaled and Kenny “dies” putting him outta his misery and Lee’s powerless to do anything. So great, that sucks.
But at least he’s got Christa and Omid.... until they get separated at the Marsh House and Lee’s gotta get through a herd of them by himself.
This slow burn is so good. His condition gets progressively worse but he’s so determined to get to Clem that it doesn’t matter. He doesn’t have time to think about what is inevitably going to happen to him, even if the player does.
And just.... the final scene... y’know, the actual death scene?
It’s so good. It’s a beautiful, emotional punch in the face. Like, way to end your game like this... Lee is trapped her with Clementine and he can’t walk, he can’t get up no matter how much Clementine begs him to try, he just- he can’t. He knows it’s all over for him and so he has her handcuff him to this heater so that no matter what, he can’t hurt her and just.... their final moments together where Lee is minutes away from death but is struggling to tell her as much as he can and I’m crying.
Then of course, the final choice-- Do you shoot Lee, or do you leave him to turn?
Both ending hurt my soul, but they’re both great in different ways. Shooting him is so heartbreaking... seeing little Clem sobbing as she points the gun at him and closes her eyes, then it cuts to black as the shot rings out and you hear Lee’s final breath....
BUT THEN YOU HAVE THE LEAVE HIM ENDING WHICH-
Tumblr media
Lee manages to tell her more when you choose not to shoot him, but just watching Clementine get to the door and her little “don’t go” before Lee closes his eyes and falls over limp... falls over dead, I just--
Ouch... I am applauding this through my ugly sobs.
It’s the best death in the series. It has everything and then some- emotional impact, works to progress the story and characters, amazing dialogue and performances.... It still gets me to this day.

Honorable Mentions
-Mark’s death technically happens off screen, but I mean, c’mon... Mark wasn’t the most compelling character, but everyone remembers what happened to him. Everyone remembers walker Mark. What happened to him showed us just how fucked the St Johns were and it’s excellent.  -Brody’s death is pretty good, too.  -Abel’s death is an interesting one. He’s a garbage can, but they managed to humanize him just a bit by the way he hands his soon-to-be demise.  -Badger when Conrad kills him. It’s super good.  -I’m looking over this list now and it’s kinda funny that not a single S2 death made it here... it’s almost like all the character death that happened there was because a quota needed to be filled and who cares about complex character development when you got Kenny and nothing really matters I guess... ugh. The best deaths would probably be Carver, and Kenny when you shoot him but they’re not good enough to be in a top 5 so.... good job.
---
So... that was fun. What do you guys think? Do you agree with my choices or nah? Do you have a favorite death I didn’t list that you thought was well executed? Let me know, I’m curious.
Have any suggestions for future T5F’s? Feel free to send ‘em in! :D

Tell Me Everything
Follows Found Out, Akio, Chris Sees, and I’m Here
CW: References to murder, suicide, grief, pet whump, abduction, whump of a minor, ableism, Oliver Branch manages to be creepy even now in brief reference
He’s shorter than Ben thought he would be.
Ben sees him first, but, like of course he does - Akio Nakamura isn’t exactly famous but he has his own youtube channel and is like an Olympic-level athlete, so he’s pretty fucking recognizable... if you’ve spent two days scrolling through every Instagram photo of him on three different accounts that you can find.
Ben showed up thirty minutes early, because Ben has never been late to a fucking thing in his life and something tells him this is maybe one of the most important things he’ll ever do, even though he doesn’t quite know why.
Something about it keeps picking at his mind, taking it apart, unraveling him with the reality that someone fucking cared about Chris, before whatever happened. Chris doesn’t remember much, and Ben and Laken had done the googling and searching and shit, trying to get some idea of what the hell could have happened to make someone like Chris - bouncy and full of sunshine optimism even on his bad days - end up at a place like WRU.
They’d found nothing a first. But Ben hadn’t known what he was looking for, then. Now that he knows what to look for, he can’t stop finding things. He feels like a detective or someone who has lost his mind, desperately piecing together a life that was interrupted, like someone disappearing mid-sentence, and Ben is following a trail of the words he said before.
He finds human-interest stories from ten years ago, digitized articles from old community newspapers. He finds more photos from the gym, photos where the redheaded boy is in the background, or in the front always looking slightly off to one side, rarely smiling for the camera but happy to smile as long as he didn’t have to look right at it.
He finds out Veronica Higgs, murdered in the double-homicide that had destroyed the life of Tristan Higgs, had a facebook page, and it’s marked as In Memorial. So is her husband’s, but Paul Higgs’s page is private and his profile photo is a meme that hasn’t been a thing since…
Since they died.
Something about that makes his throat close up as he scrolls Ronnie’s last few public updates, the scattering of people who have left comments saying they miss her, they’re thinking of her, they hope she’s in a better place. Comments are left on the last post like clockwork, once a year, by the same few people.
Thinking of you today, Ronnie.
Saw your favorite bird today!
Hope you and Tris and Paul are happy wherever you are now, Ronnie. I take comfort in knowing you’re still together.
Happy Heavenly Birthday, Ronnie!
Left flowers for you today, Ronnie. Jennifer did a routine this year that uses some of Tristan’s music, we’re always thinking of you!
Thinking of you
Miss you
Hope you three are happy together
Miss you, big sister, always.
One day I’ll stop leaving comments like you’re still here. I was watching the old videos and gosh, I couldn’t help but think how proud we were of our boys back then! Rest in peace. Give Tris a kiss for me. That’s Aimi Nakamura, that’s Akio’s mom. Her profile photo is her with her arms around Akio himself, wearing his leotard and holding up a medal with a bright smile, and a younger teenager who must be his little sister - she’s just wearing regular clothes. Feeling like a stalker, Ben opens the mom’s facebook page in a new tab. He absolutely does not look at the photos of Akio she’s posted. He does not do that at all.
He might do that later.
For now he goes back to Ronnie’s page, sees that her last post was brief, something about looking for a recipe, crowd-sourcing. Tris asked to try baked oysters, isn’t that funny? Only my kid, I swear. He’d said seafood is ‘slime’ except for tuna since toddlerhood, but no, this week he wants oysters. He said he wanted to try something new for once and he might as well go as far from the usual as he could get. I
One of the joys of all of this is how when he gets something in his head, I just go with him, and we see what’s on the other side of the jump, right? Watch him spit it right back out.
It’s fucking ordinary.
She posted it a couple days before she was murdered.
That doesn’t seem fair, does it? He just can’t wrap his head around it. She was a good mom taking care of her kid, she got some recipe ideas... but then she never cooked any of them because she just… died?
She died, and Tristan’s - Chris’s - dad died, and then there just wasn’t anybody? There wasn’t anybody to take care of a kid who couldn’t take care of himself yet? Nobody at-fucking-all, to keep Tristan safe and loved when the people who loved him the most were gone?
How the hell did he go from placed in the care of relatives to just... gone? How did he go from gone to a rescued runaway pet with a new name and a new life? What happened in all that gray space in-between?
Ben blinks back tears.
Whatever it was... could that happen to Jamey? Ben’s whole family has built their existence on holding his little brother together through the ways the world wants to shred everything about him. He’s spent nearly all the life he remembers with his brother’s hand closed in the fabric of his shirt, shadowing him through the world, reminding him that you can’t trust everybody, not everyone has good intentions.
Ben doesn’t even have to think before he’s moving in front of him to block out the noise and chaos of the world that Jamey just can't filter the way Ben can. He knows that when - hopefully forever from now - their parents die, Jamey’s going to move in with Ben.
It’s never been a question. He doesn’t want it to be a question.
But... what if Ben wasn’t there? What would happen to Jamey if his Mom and Dad were gone, and nobody was there who wanted to keep Jamey safe? He can’t stop thinking about it. He cycles around and around, and Laken called him yesterday and said not to talk to Chris for a few days, that he saw the video and he’s not okay, and Ben’s not fucking okay, either, is he?
This could happen to Jamey.
Someone could see him, alone and vulnerable, and think, no one will stop me and he can’t stop me either, and then Jamey could disappear and then just not be Jamey anymore, and there wouldn’t be anyone to save him-
Ben looks up from his phone without focusing on anything, sniffing back the pain, the tight feeling in his chest at the idea of his little brother, disappearing into some dark hallway and never coming back. Just some photos on Instagram, a video of two, some mentions on somebody’s In Memorial Facebook page, that’s all that’s left of his silly, serious, annoying, funny little brother?
Like someone turned out the light on Jamey’s life and the world just forgets him, because his family isn’t there to keep him safe and Jamey can’t always tell who you can trust and who you can’t, and… and Chris can’t either, can he?
He just wants to think the best of everyone, he forgives everyone who hurts him so easily, so quickly, like it’s second-nature, like...
Did Tristan Higgs want to think good things about whoever did this, whoever had him erased, whoever handed him off to be turned into one of those blank empty-eyed dolls celebrities and rich people drag around? Did Tristan Higgs trust the person who gave him away to be erased, because he didn’t know not to?
Who the fuck bought him?
How did it all fucking happen?
The bell chimes. Akio Nakamura is right on time.
And he’s short.
He’s got a natural almost-smile on his face at all times, a hint of tan to his skin even now in the early spring, wearing a thin gray hoodie, unzipped over a plain white t-shirt and blue jeans. His muscles aren’t visible, like this, but Ben has seen the videos and knows they’re there, the body of a trained athlete hidden under casual clothing. His hair isn’t as short as it is when he competes, in the videos Ben has already watched over and over entirely for research purposes. It’s a little longer, starting to flop over his forehead.
Dark eyes scan the interior of the store, and Ben raises one hand to catch his attention.
The smile brightens, briefly, with a quick nod - like the sun coming out from behind a cloud, Ben feels that smile as a physical warmth in his chest - and he pushes the rest of the way inside, walking straight over.
“Hey,” Akio says, and his voice is a little deeper than it seems in the youtube videos where he narrates, and Ben, for one shining moment, completely forgets how to speak his own fucking native language.
His mouth opens and nothing comes out - except maybe kind of a croak, which, please let that not have been audible - and he clears his throat, waiting for his brain and his body to remember how to work together. “Uh… um, h-hey,” He says, finally, and shifts uncomfortably. “You’re-... right. I’m, um. I’m Ben.”
“Yeah. I, I figured, you look just like your profile photo.” Akio laughs a little, dropping into a seat cross from him, sitting casually and letting his eyes roam over the mostly-empty interior of the shop, painted with bright colors and lined with posters about ice cream.
Ben could not possibly have picked a worse place for a professional athlete to go to… meet and talk about his dead friend, could he? Oh, God. Oh he’s a fucking moron. “Right. Uh, sorry, I couldn’t-... when you asked to meet on the phone, I kind of blanked and this was the only place I could think of-”
“Hey, that’s all right. I like coming here, when I’m off from competing. It’s been a while. Hope you don’t mind if I stick with an iced coffee today, though, I’m not feeling ice cream.” Akio grins at him, and Ben’s knees might buckle if he wasn’t sitting down already. The smile takes over his entire face, lights it up, and it reminds him so much of Chris when he’s really happy, the way Chris smiles with his entire fucking body, not just his mouth.
“Yeah, it’s… no problem, I’ll order, I picked here, anyway. Just the iced coffee?”
“Yeah, please. Also, I should warn you - my mom is lurking across the street faking an interest in whatever they sell at Paisley Poses and she’ll probably stop pretending she’s not here and show up before we’re done. She’s… uh. Well, get the stuff, and then I’ll, um, I’ll explain.”
“Right. Got it.” Ben’s grip on his phone is white-knuckled as he stands up, aware of every movement of his body as he walks - and he walks normally, right? Not, like weird? It’s not like Akio is watching him walk anyway, probably - over to the cash register. The cashier, whose hair is dyed a pale faded sort of seafoam green, almost the color of those weird mint shakes you can buy from McDonald’s in April, takes his order with a flat affect, unbothered, uncaring.
Ben doesn’t know what he orders for himself. His mouth moves and words come out and then he realizes he doesn’t know what he just said.
Whatever it is, he pays for it.
He takes the little number-on-a-stick, and carries it back to the table to wait.
“Iced coffee it is,” He says a little breathlessly. “Um, it’ll be just a sec. They’ll bring it out with my… with mine.”
Shit, what the fuck did he even order for himself?
“No problem.” Akio’s eyes move over his face, considering. He’s sitting slouched a little, but it doesn’t look quite natural - like his posture is usually so much better and he’s trying to look like everyone else. Ben’s eyes are drawn to his hands, folded over his stomach, over wrinkled white shirt fabric. He has a blood-bruise under one thumbnail.
What a weird fucking thing to notice about someone.
“I-I don’t really know where to start,” Ben admits, slouching himself. He runs his fingers over the textured case of his phone, a charcoal-black with rough edges. Jamey likes the texture on his phone, will just sit and rub the pads of his fingers on it over and over and over again, smiling in a distant way, sitting next to Ben on the couch while Ben watches TV and Jamey, who can go days without speaking and is currently one hundred percent all about how they film movies and tv shows, explains every fucking cinematic trick every camera is using at any given moment.
It’s nice.
It’s how Jamey says he loves you, by sharing what’s up in his head whenever he can, and Ben - when he’s home - always tries to listen.
“Yeah.” Akio laughs again, and Ben decides it’s a good laugh - strong, and not overly loud, and a little infectious. “Yeah, me neither. I don’t-... how do you even begin a conversation like this? Hello, nice to meet you, what do you know about my dead best friend? I don’t know what to say, just… we don’t even know they’re the same person, do we? Maybe they just look alike. Fuck.” Akio laughs once more, but this time it’s shaky, breathier. “I genuinely can’t decide if I want him to dead or not, I just-...”
Ben takes a breath, thinking of Laken’s voice on the phone yesterday morning, exhausted and rambling after a night of not sleeping, their fear and grief and love for Chris, telling Ben to go ahead with this meeting, but Chris needed time. “They’re definitely the same person,” He says, voice low and quiet. “We, um. He saw the video you posted, and he kind of-... freaked out.”
“Freaked out?” Akio blinks, sitting up a little straighter. His eyes are focused completely on Ben’s face, which would make him blush if he weren’t trying not to look directly at him. “What do you mean?”
Ben swallows. “Um. Just. He’s-... he doesn’t remember. Or… he didn’t. Seeing the video might have… brought some stuff up. Like, a lot of... bad stuff.”
Fuck, I’ve never heard him scream like that. Laken’s voice, rough-edged, laced with their tears. I can’t believe… he needs a few days, he can’t go with you to see this guy, Ben. He’s-... he’s super fucked up right now. I’m so glad his brothers know what’s happening to him because I-I don’t know what to do and he won’t let me anywhere near him.
Akio nods, slowly, and his hands worry at each other under the table, the smile faded and replaced with seriousness, uncertainty. “Yeah, when you said-... anyway, I looked the company up, and it’s-... it’s weird, I knew about pets, but I guess… I mean, he wasn’t old enough to…”
“Um… yeah. So, um. I know, but they-... clearly they still did...”
They sit there in an awkward silence, and then Akio pulls his own phone out of his pocket and unlocks it. “Let me show you something. Tris and I shared our passwords for Instagram, way back, and when he-... went… when his aunt took his phone away-”
Ben’s eyebrows furrow. Something about that pricks at him. Miss you, big sister, always.
“He went to live with his aunt?” Ben asks. The cashier reappears, setting a plain iced coffee down on the table, and Ben discovers he apparently ordered iced coffee with a scoop of ice cream for himself, and that’s not bad, good for him. It’s even his favorite ice cream, vanilla with almond and chocolate chips.
“Yeah, his Aunt Jo, his mom’s sister.” Akio shrugs one shoulder. “I never met her, she never came to meets or anything. Tris always said she was kind of a shit to him and his dad.” Something in his jaw is tightening - and the line of his jaw is catching Ben’s eyes entirely too much for the seriousness of this conversation. He can’t stop himself from looking. “She’s who he went to live with, after. She took his phone away because he was complaining to, um, to my mom and I - my mom and Ronnie, Mrs. Higgs, were… you know, team moms.” He shrugs, and Ben doesn’t know, but he nods anyway. “He was complaining about how she took him out of therapy, and… uh, you know, Tris needed therapy, just-... it helped him to, um-”
Ben swallows. “Self-regulate,” He says, softly. “Redirect potentially harmful stims. Figure out how to filter.”
“Right.” Akio smiles, a little shamefaced. “Sorry, it’s been… fucking years since I had to think about this so much. It’s… I would show my mom his messages, and my mom would call Jo and tell her to get him back in therapy and back to practice, but… you know, the social workers said there was nothing we could do about it. We weren’t family. We made complaints, but...” Akio slumps, closing his eyes briefly. "God, I don't even know if they did a home visit."
Ben closes his eyes. Jamey, trapped with someone who didn’t let him go to his own therapy. Jamey, nonverbal on hard days, trapped with someone who didn’t learn signing to talk to him during meltdowns like Ben’s family did.
Jamey, trying to say he needed help with his hands again and again but no one’s listening, no one’s even trying anymore-
“Yeah,” Ben says, voice hoarse, and uses a thin plastic spoon with a long handle to get a bite of ice cream soaked in cold coffee taste, letting it dissolve on his tongue to buy himself some time for his throat to open back up. It’s fear in his chest, yeah, but beneath that is a bubbling, simmering fury, a distant anger for a hypothetical that he understands was Chris’s reality. “Yeah. My brother’s-... um, autistic, so I know… I know about it.”
“Yeah, I saw that.”
Ben blinks, caught off-guard. “What?”
Akio flushes, reddening along his cheekbones, and rolls his eyes at himself, slumping back down. “Okay, so, I promise I’m not a stalker, but when you messaged me I looked at your profile to see if you were just a creep. I saw the autism banner, so I looked and you wrote this really sweet thing about your brother-... how old is he?”
Ben almost forgets how to speak again. “He’s-... fifteen. Just turned fifteen. Jamey’s, um, his name is Jamey.”
“Cool. Yeah. So. I’m not a stalker. But, I’m just… listen, Tris and I started training at the gym together when we were like… seven. And I was seventeen when he, when she said… when she said he died.”
Ben’s breath catches. “Shit. She did?”
“Um. Yeah. A month after she took his phone away - we were calling her all the time asking to speak with him and stuff, my mom had kind of threatened to get social services involved again - she called my mom and said he-... um. Sorry if suicide is a thing for you, but…”
“No, I-I’m okay, I just…”
“Yeah. She told us he killed himself. We thought she was lying - oh fuck, she was lying, wasn’t she? - but so... but then you know, she had him cremated, and... I fucking-... I lost my shit, Ben. I didn’t compete, I didn’t train, I just, I just sat in my room for like six months bawling my eyes out and I told my mom it was just like she killed him, taking him away from everything when, you know, he was so sad and scared without them.”
Ben nods, quiet, watching Akio’s face as he speaks.
“My mom offered to take him, have him live with us, but… you know, she said no, and then he-... but he didn’t.” Akio drinks his coffee, absently, and Ben realizes his eyes are red around the edges. “Oh, god, he probably thought nobody cared about him anymore. Oh, shit. He probably thought we stopped giving a fuck. That h-he was al-... alone-”
He’s been crying. He’s maybe going to cry again.
Akio takes in a deep, shuddering breath. “He didn’t know-... shit. He probably just thought, no one’s coming, nobody cares, and… shit. I don’t know what to even think right now, just...” Akio slides his phone across the table. “Look at this. I locked it, when I thought-... but I kept it, anyway. I kept everything, I couldn’t-... I mean it’s just a box of stuff under my bed, but… I couldn’t throw any of it out, because… I don’t know. Somebody needed to, to r-remember him, and she wouldn’t have-... that fucking bitch told us he was dead. And she threw out all his stuff, so I’m... I guess I’m the only one who still has anything, so I just... kept it. Everything. And... this.”
There’s a moment where they both pretend Akio’s voice isn’t trembling.
“What is this?” Ben knows before the question is fully out of his mouth, but he looks anyway. Akio’s phone is still warm from his hand.
“Tristan’s Instagram account. We, uh, we took pictures of stupid shit a lot back then, and Instagram was, like, super new and all filters all the time, so you just-... but this is his. His mom encouraged him to use it because, you know, sometimes he could show stuff better than he could say it.”
“Yeah, I get that.” Ben tilts his head, scrolling through the images. Most of the photos are just nothing - a cloud, books on a bookshelf, a tree leaf. Ben kind of quirks a smile at all the old Instagram filters right there, like looking in a fucking time capsule. Sometimes there are gymnastics photos, of the gym or of someone training. Sometimes Tristan himself appears in the photo, a blur of constant motion, photos taken by someone else. Photos of dinosaur bones at a museum, seemingly every fucking skeleton or fossil in the place.
“That’s our trip to DC, the team went,” Akio says, and points to a photo of Tristan and Akio, gangly awkward teenagers, standing in front of the Lincoln monument. Akio is smiling, and Tristan is looking up at the sky instead of the camera. “I like to look at this stuff sometimes? I know it’s been… it’s funny, we were talking a few weeks ago about how it’ll be a couple more years when he’s been dead longer than how long I knew him, but he’s not-... he was never dead.” Akio swallows, and his voice catches. When he speaks again, he sounds strained, forcing his voice to stay calm around the emotion that threatens to overtake it. “He was never dead. I keep getting caught up on that, because-... because how did we not know? How did we never… find him?”
Ben pushes the phone back to Akio. “You didn’t know to look,” He says, softly. “How were you supposed to find him if you didn’t know anyone needed to be looking?”
“I guess. My mom feels like shit, she’s been crying since we spoke to you. Well, I have, too. But my mom feels like she… she should have showed up at Joanne’s door and just taken Tristan by force, but, you know, the cops would’ve taken him right back, probably? That’s fucking kidnapping? And I keep telling her not to feel guilty, but she-”
“Yeah,” Ben says, thinking of Laken’s voice on the phone.
I didn’t know he’d come home early. I keep saying I’m sorry but... He wasn’t-... he wasn’t ready for this and he’s so… he’s so fucked up. He won’t even talk to me. Every time Jake leaves the room we’re scared he’ll hurt himself again. He keeps telling me to find someone else, somebody easier, but I don’t want anyone else, god damn it, I want him!
“She’s taking it really hard,” Akio says, finally, breaking into Ben’s thoughts. “I mean. We both are. But, you know, I keep thinking I can’t do this but then I think… I want to see him again. I want to see this guy in person, not just in those photos and videos you had. I want to see how he’s doing, he looks-... he looks so good.” Akio coughs, like he’s trying to cover up a sob, not quite managing it. “He looks really good.”
“He is, he’s doing… he’s good. Um, he’s having a hard time with remembering some stuff, but overall... he’s good.” Ben picks his own phone back up, pops back to Ronnie’s page. “What did you say the aunt’s name was?”
“Jo, um, Joanne… something. Sorry, I don’t really remember her last name, my mom would-”
“Botham?” Ben looks up, and god, he kind of wants to hug Akio until there aren’t tears in his eyes anymore. But also that’s a stupid thing to think, isn’t it? But he wants to, anyway.
“Oh, that sounds right.”
“She left a comment on his mom’s-... I’ve been looking for everything I could find. I’m sorry, I know that’s creepy. But Joanne Botham left like a comment about missing-... hold on.” Ben clicks to open up Joanne Botham’s profile. A woman smiling in a profile photo, with dark hair. Something about the shape of her mouth is similar to Chris’s, but that doesn’t mean much, really. He scrolls down.
Name, stupid quote from a stupider movie, current city is a while away from this one, like a couple states away, but she could’ve moved… There it is.
The answer to his questions, all of them, all at once, right out in the open.
“Joanne Botham,” He says out loud, “works at WRU.”
“What?” Akio looks up at him.
“His aunt. The mom’s sister, she works for WRU. That’s where Chris was-... where they hurt him. Where they make pets.”
Where they erase people. Where they take someone like Jamey and destroy him and how many versions of my brother are there who weren’t rescued by somebody like Chris’s big brother?
“WRU?” Akio’s face twists, an ugly pain written across it. “They’re one of our team’s sponsors. I’ve never thought about how… oh my god. I, I never liked… I mean, none of us are, like, political about it because you can’t be if you want an Olympic career, not really, but we all kind of hated taking the money. My coach thinks it’s good because it gets people off the street, which is super fucked up, but…” His iced coffee thunks down on the table.
“What?”
“Oh shit. Oh holy fuck. They’ve been sponsoring us since we met with the old governor - he’s the one who hooked our coach up with their marketing team, and oh my god. I’m gonna be fucking sick. WRU’s been my sponsor since like… a year after Tristan died-... didn’t die, I guess...”
“You didn’t know,” Ben whispers, staring down at Joanne Botham’s profile photo, scrolling through the profile picture photo album. He’s not maybe the smartest person on earth, but he can put two and two together for four. Tristan Higgs’s parents died, he goes to his aunt - who works for a human pet company - and he’s dead, supposedly, four months later.
Time passes. No sign of supposed dead boy.
Then Chris, identical in every way, appears with no memory of his life and a thousand traumas to heal from, rescued from something that Ben doesn’t know the details of, but he doesn’t have to.
Life as a pet, a life that made him terrified of bad weather and scared of people who raise their hands too quickly, unable to say no to anything when he gets scared, nervous about big vans with no windows, someone who says stupid fucking bullshit like silence is better than stammering when he’s upset, who sometimes has screaming nightmares that Laken has to wake him from that he refuses to explain to them...
Meanwhile, Aunt Joanne is putting up photos of herself traveling internationally, buying a new house, a new car, stuff she couldn’t afford to do before.
The math does itself.
It’s fucking true crime textbook, and it’s right in front of his eyes.
Akio’s jaw is working, and his eyes are glimmering again. He looks at Ben, and he looks weirdly lost and young, and Ben reaches out without thinking and grabs onto his hand. Akio grips on tight. His hand is warm, almost too warm, but also it’s the perfect amount of warm. “Do you think-... do you think she-”
Ben thinks about Jamey, scared and alone. He thinks about Jamey - and Tristan, the two of them mixing together in his mind - being dragged away, to be lost and overwritten, because no one was there to stop it.
Because someone did it on purpose.
Because no one stopped it.
“I think maybe she was lying to you because she didn’t want you to take Tristan,” Ben says, softly. “I think maybe she wanted to-... make money on him.”
Akio chokes, and leans forward, and Ben holds his hand as tightly as he can, feeling the other man’s fingers tremble in his grip. “I can't-... I can't even begin to deal with that, I just… So h-how did he end up in college? Pets don’t-... go to school, they’re not capable… are they?"
"Um. It depends, apparently?" Ben doesn’t know how much of this is something Chris would ever allow him to share. But Akio’s eyes raise, and catch his again, and Ben smiles, just a little, in an attempt to comfort. “He was rescued,” He says, softly. “I don’t know how, or when. He’d have to tell you that himself. But he’s, um. He’s just Chris now.”
“He’s just Chris, now.” Akio groans resting his head on his hand. “But not Tristan. So he really is dead, his body’s still just-.. walking around.”
“No,” Ben says, and leans in, getting Akio to look at him again. “He’s not gone. Not, like, the core of him, I think. We knew him as soon as we saw him on your video. We knew the smile, and how he moves, all of it. Everybody in the room knew him as soon as we saw him smile at you. He’s still there, he’s still him. I promise.”
“I knew it was him on your stuff as soon as I saw him dancing,” Akio says, brokenly. “H-he always did get obsessed with those fuh-fucking musicals and we used to make up routines to th-them-” His head drops, shoulders shaking, and Ben puts his other hand on Akio’s shoulder, moves around the edge of the little circular table, so he can put an arm around him.
“It’s okay,” He whispers. “It’s okay.”
“It’s not,” Akio says, muffled. “It’s not okay. We should have saved him, w-we didn’t know, we didn’t know she would… he probably th-thought we didn’t care... the social worker said it was fine, we’re not re-relatives, we didn’t know he wasn’t dead, we didn’t know he wasn’t gone, I thought I l-lost him and he probably thinks I didn’t even give a fuck-”
“I’m sure he never thought that,” Ben says, softly, and Akio’s hair brushes a little against the side of his face and he tries not to think too hard about how nice that feels, this is not the time or place, Benjamin, stop thinking about his hair stop it stop it stop it.
“We thought... “
“I know. But… you found him, now. He’s found.”
Akio sniffs back tears, mumbling, “Can I see him?”
Ben hesitates. “He needs-... he might need some time.”
Akio nods without looking up, but he leans a little on Ben. “I’m sorry, I’m being a fucking moron about this, making you comfort me and you don’t even know me, but I just-... missed him, and mourned him, and we go to see is parents wh-where they’re buried every year on the day that his aunt said he-... Is he h-happy? Now?”
Ben closes his eyes. That’s what I’d want to know, isn’t it, if it was Jamey. Is he happy now? Does his new family sign, do they know how to calm him down when it’s too much, do they know, do they care, if I’m not there does someone love him as much as we did?
I’d claw my way out of the fucking grave to make sure someone loves Jamey as much as he deserves.
“He’s happy,” Ben says, softly. “He was adopted by the guy who saved him, I think. There’s a whole lot I don’t know, you know, it’s not really my-... my story to, um, to tell. I just know some of it. He’s, um, he’s with someone, and… he’s… he’s happy.”
“Good. I just-... I want to see him.”
“I know. I’ll ask. But his partner... I’m friends with them, and they, um, he’s n-not... not okay right now, so...”
“I can wait.” Akio looks at him, intense, intent, eyes so dark Ben could fall in. “I’ve waited this long, I can-... I can wait a little longer, I just... I just want to see him, when he can see me.”
The bell over the door chimes again, and the two of them turn and look to see a woman who could not be more obviously Akio’s mother entering, looking at them, her eyebrows furrowed in immediate worry when she sees the tears on Akio’s face. “Aki?”
“It’s him, Mom,” Akio says, and she moves to him as if drawn, and Ben fights himself to pull back and away, to watch mother and son. Tristan had this, and lost it, but Chris has it, too. Life, interrupted at the second act, begun again with new actors around the main character. “It’s definitely-... it’s Tristan. But, she-... I have to tell you what happened to him. He, they-they made him a, um, a pet-”
She hitches in a breath, pulls a chair with a loud scrape from another table, and sits, looking Ben over, expression serious. “Tell me,” She says, softly, but fiercely.
“It’s, um, it’s a lot…”
“I’ve got time.” Ben is reminded of his own mother, in the simple steel flashing under her perfectly styled hair and carefully done makeup. Her eyes are red around the edges, too. She lays a cool, dry hand over Ben’s, and her dark eyes bore into him with focused intensity. “Tell me what happened to our Tris. I want to know what happened to-... I want to know what I didn’t stop.”
Akio looks sidelong at his mother, putting an arm around her, and he’s shorter than his mom but she seems to sag against him, and he can see how Akio takes after his mom, with the same wide mouth that normally seems always on the verge of a smile, the same dark eyes flashing with anger and guilt. “M-Mom, you couldn’t have known, we couldn’t do anything-”
“I could have gone to that woman’s… house, or wherever she was, and taken Tristan right out the door, and I didn’t,” Aimi says, and her voice doesn’t shake, but her face is bright red and her eyes are overbright and glittering. “I could have called lawyers, or the cops, I could have tried to fight for him and I didn’t. Ronnie deserved-” Her voice catches and her hand is over her mouth. Ben watches her eyes well up, her struggle to calm herself, throat working as she swallows and leans into her son’s embrace. “Ronnie… would have wanted someone to fight for him. I want to know what happened because I did the normal thing and not the right thing, because I didn’t let myself see it. I want to know what exactly it is that I didn’t stop when I had the chance.”
Ben sits back, takes a breath.
“He, um. His name is… Chris now,” Ben starts, slowly. “Christopher Stanton. He’s, um, he’s a sophomore in college, and… he was a human pet, for a while. We don’t know how long, nobody knows for sure, or who had him. I mean, I guess he knows and I think his brother knows, but h-he, won’t… won’t tell anyone who it was.”
Aimi’s whole body shudders, but her face doesn’t change, and her eyes don’t leave Ben’s. “H-how-”
Akio licks at his lips, and hesitantly says, “Ben thinks maybe that aunt they sent him to sold him. She works for WRU.”
Aimi’s eyes slowly close, and her breathing is slow but trembling. The two young men watch her. Akio’s knee bumps his under the table, and he doesn’t think about that, either, except it’s all he’s going to think about for the rest of the day.
“Okay,” Aimi says, after a long pause, and her eyes open again. A kind of perfect calm settles itself across the pain in her expression.
Ben thinks that this woman is probably fucking terrifying if it’s you she’s angry with and not herself.
“Mom, if we need to stop, that’s okay-”
“We don’t. Ben-... that’s your name? Ben?”
“Uh, yeah… Benjamin Prentiss, but-... call me Ben.”
Prentiss, Akio mouths to himself, and Ben hopes, in another weird moment, that Akio likes his last name.
“Got it.” Aimi leans forward, smacks the table with one hand. Ben flinches. Her jaw sets. She’s definitely terrifying. Like his own mother when they tried to kick Jamey out of school, this is a woman who could stare down the sun itself unblinking and walk away undamaged, if the sun was a threat to her children. “Ben?”
“Yes, um, Mrs. Nakamura?”
“Keep talking. Tell me everything about Tristan-”
“Chris.” He clears his throat. “He’s, um, his name is Chris.”
“... tell me everything about Chris.”

KOKICHI POV
“So, Nagisa. I heard you’re getting a new caretaker?”
I looked at Nagisa, pitying the poor boy. He never had good parents. They would always force the youngling to work, days over days, sometimes hitting him to help him stay awake. That’s his reason for being very smart at a young age.
I would always stay here with him in the afternoon, occupying him so he doesn’t have to go back home.
“Mhm! I heard he’s a boy, I hope he’s nice!”
I smiled at the small boy. Even with all the despair he has been through during his life, he still had a glimpse of hope resting in his heart. I admired him for this, he was very strong for pulling through all the drama, especially as a child.
“Y’know, I’m gonna miss going here when I grow up. Will I ever see you again?”
“I mean, I could probably get in contact with your new caretaker, and could visit you once in a while…”
“I don’t wanna leave this place…”
I comforted him as his tears threatened to fall from his eyes, tracing random designs on his back, listening to his troubles. I suddenly heard a knock on the door. I energetically got up from my seat, Nagisa following close behind me, and then opened the door.
There was a man with teal blue hair and a detective uniform standing at the door. He looked kinda sexy-
“Hello, Mr. Detective~ You here for something?”
He stared at me before handing me a few slips of paper. Adoption papers? Wha-
“Who are you?”
Nagisa was a little scared, as he was a detective. The poor boy probably thought that the man was here for something serious.
I hushed Nagisa as I pulled him infront of me, giving him a good view of the man.
“My apologies…I’m Shuichi Saihara. Nice to meet you.”
I nodded at him and decided to introduce Nagisa and myself/
“I’m Kokichi Ouma, and this is Nagisa. Judging by the adoption papers, I’m guessing you’re here for Nagisa?”
He nodded and shook the hand I held out to him. He had such a calming voice…
“Are you mean?”
“I promise I’m no-“
“You smell like coffee.
“Wha-“
“Nagisa, it’s not ok to interrupt people y’know.”
Nagisa muttered a small ‘sorry’ to me and the man before getting his bag. He peered up at me with teary eyes. I could tell he didn’t want to go with a new parent, due to trust issues. I sighed and pat him on the head.
“You better take care of him.”
Shuichi smiled at me, reassuring that everything was going to be fine. I held out my phone with my contacts open.
“Phone number?”
I asked him as he took my phone (and ran off with it) and he handed me his, and we both entered each other’s phone number. Nagisa smiled as I showed him my phone, his eyes gleaming with hope and joy. I couldn’t help but smile back at him. Shuichi even grinned at us placing his hands gently on Nagisa’s shoulder. I waved them goodbye as they waved back, Nagisa ranting to Shuichi about me. I’m glad I was able to make him happy. I walked around the small room, arranging everything back into its normal places and counting all the items to see if they were still there. 10 paint brushes, 2 art easels, 20 pencils, 5 paint palettes, 40 books and 7 whiteboard markers. Looks like I’m running low on markers, I’ll grab some in the morning. I smiled and locked the door behind me. I strolled down the street under the glowing sky, showing colours of orange, yellow, red, and peach. I sat calmly at the bus stop, taking off my painting apron and stuffing it into my bag neatly. I placed earplugs into my ears and started playing my favourite playlist.
Soon the bus arrived, squeaking its brakes as it parked into the bus stop. I sighed and planted my feet onto the ground as boarded the bus. It didn’t take long to get home.
||Time Skip Cuz Lazy||
I jingled my keys as I brought them out of my pocket, slotting them into the lock and opening the doors to the kindergarten. I walked in, turning on the fans by a little, and the lights. I began to write whatever was happening onto the big whiteboard and restocked my pens. I smiled as children and parent sprawled into the room, yet keeping an eye out for Nagisa. If he had any new scars or bruises, or darker eyebags, Shuichi won’t be waking up the next day. I waited about five minutes, everyone was here, but the two people I had been waiting for.
Suddenly, the doors swung open, and I spotted Shuichi giving the small child a piggy-back ride. I smiled as they both grinned back at me, Nagisa climbing off the adults back and running over to me.
“Kokichi! You won’t believe it! He let me use his magnifying glass and we went to the park. He even pushed me on the swing! I love my new dad!”
I grinned wider, glad Shuichi was giving him a good treatment. He even said he loved him.
“That’s great Nagisa! I’m grateful that Shuichi has been treating you right.”
Shuichi lovingly hugged Nagisa.
“I better go, or I’ll be late for work! Bye, have a good day you two! I love both of you!”
The young boy I waved goodbye as the detective briskly walked out of the kindergarten building, waving us goodbye, blushing. Wait, he loved both of us…?
||POV Change||
SHUICHI POV
I walked out the door, blushing crazily. I can’t believe I said that. I’m so embarrassed…
I hopped into the car, driving down to the detective agency. When I had first met Kokichi, I thought he looked a little cute, but I just ignored my thoughts. I’ll just tell him I was talking Nagisa and his non-existent imaginary friend…yeah I’ll just do that.
I arrived at the agency, closing the door gently behind me and taking in a deep breath. The aroma of coffee wafted around the area. No wonder I smelt like coffee…According to Nagisa anyways.
“Good morning Mr. Saihara. You looked like you’ve slept well!”
My partner, detective Kirigiri. I grinned at her, starting to tell her about Nagisa. She nodded at me while I spoke, thankful that I finally had something to cheer me up. I had been so busy with work lately that I was so tired to even show much emotion.
“So, Shuichi. We have a new case to work on.”
“Hm? What’s it about?”
“Just a new murder case, the usual.”
I nodded at her getting my file reports organized and ready. She gave me some evidence, suspect reports, reports of the victim and the time and place of the murder.
“It seemed to be planned too…”
I muttered as she passed over a small picture which showed the room.
“Huh?”
I pointed at the picture, spotting a nearly invisible ‘escape route plan’ peeking out of the screen. You could only see half of it though.
“That’s new…”
“Wait…How did you know this wasn’t there? Weren’t you at the crime scene?”
“It was a photo in the victims camera roll. You were correct, I was there, but it seems like the killer needed this to escape.”
“That makes sense.”
“So, the killer must’ve either been scared they would mess up, has a bad memory or had minimum time to figure this out…”
She agreed with me and pointed to the wall again, pointing back to the photo.
“There seems to be something white in the vents that we never checked.”
She stated bluntly while narrowing her eyes to get a better look.
“You’re right! Why didn’t you check the vents though…?”
“Rats.”
“Wha-“
I shrugged it off and looked back at Kyoko, then the picture again. She smirked at me and placed a hand on my shoulder.
“You wanna check it out, don’t you.”
“Kinda-“
“Well, what are you waiting for?”
I followed her out of the building, and we entered the car park, halting to a stop right infront of a shining, neon purple motorcycle. It gleamed in the sunlight and Kyoko continued to smirk at me.
“Chickening out?”
“N-No..”
“Good.”
She grabbed a helmet off the dark purple handlebars and gave it to me, claiming to have a spare one in her bag that she could wear. Which she did.
She hopped onto the motorcycle, gesturing for me to do the same. I gulped and lifted my leg over the seat and sat down, trembling.
“Hold on tight!”
I didn’t hesitate to do exactly as she told me. She revved the engine, and we took off down the road, her purple hair flowing viciously in the wind. I was petrified. We were going veryfast. I gulped as I felt the wind blow in my face. I rested my chin on Kirigiri’s shoulder, avoiding her purple hair flowing into my face as we raced around the city. The city lights were blurred, and people looked like smudge marks. I peered down at the road, barely able to adjust to the distorted white line and concrete. I felt a sickening dizziness, and my head just couldn’t keep up with my blurry surroundings. Yet, I felt like I was in heaven. The glorious wind blowing in my face, the soothing noises of the motorcycle engine, and the feel of Kyoko’s warmth. I closed my eyes, loosing touch with everything around me. I was in my own little world. That was, until I sensed the motorcycle slow to a halt and Kyoko’s small weight lift off the motorcycle. But since I was laying on her, she lifted me up too without realizing, and my body went tumbling forward, Kyoko’s doing the same.
“Sorry…”
I sighed and apologized, staring at the ground. She arose from the ground, dusting off her uniform and patting me delicately on my back.
“No worries, Saihara-Kun. Just be careful next time.”
I nodded as we barged into the murder scene, nobody being there.
“Watch out. We cannot predict anything. Expect the unexpected.”
I remembered her wise words and examined the room, Kirigiri assisting me by lifting me up, since I weighed less, and I unscrewed the vents to see a rat. Great. I sneakily snatched the paper and Kyoko lowered me back down to the ground, peering over my shoulder to see if anything useful was written on the small piece of white paper. It read,
Sorry, my dear friend.
“So, the victim was the culprit’s friend….
“Seems so.”
“Wait, why wasn’t it near the victim then?”
“When we arrived, the fan was on, making it completely possible to blow into the vents, in which the paper could slip through, and the rats could’ve possibly taken it.”
I nodded to show my agreement and we inspected the room a little longer. I spotted her typing on her phone a few moments later, sighing.
“Saihara-Kun.”
“Y-Yes?”
“Are you gonna leave your kid at kindergarten or…”
Shuichi blankly stared down at his wrist, reading the time.
2:12
Nagisa’s kindergarten ended at 2:00. He was over the other side of the city. He would be very late, as they had no car.
“Take my motorcycle. I want to stay a bit longer anyways.”
“Really? Thank you Kirigiri-San!”
I rushed out of the building, grabbing a sleek blue helmet and boarded the motorcycle. The wheels screeched as I raced across the city, my hair spasming in the wind. The motorbike’s wheels whirred as they rolled along the road, forcing the motorbike to drive faster. My hands gripped the handlebars incredibly tight, fearing the vehicle would stir out of control if I didn’t have power over the handlebars.
There it was. The kindergarten. I zoomed towards it, halting to a stop in the parking lot. I rushed inside, panting heavily as Kokichi and Nagisa were staring at me. The small, blue-haired boy ran over, enveloping me in a tight hug. I lovingly hugged back, patting his back in the process.
“Where were you? Parents shouldn’t be late, y’know.”
I gulped and peered up at the kindergarten teacher, mentally scolding myself. I knew I shouldn’t have been late. If it wasn’t for my partner, I would’ve left Nagisa there until I suddenly realized that he wasn’t anywhere nearby.
“Kokichi, don’t blame Dad! He had a really important case today!”
“Alright, just tell me next time.”
I muttered a sorry, and nodded, showing my understanding. The kindergarten teacher walked up to me, swiftly patting Nagisa’s head for a short period of time, then shifted to face me. I gulped, fearing I would get in trouble for not being a ‘good parent’.
“Why’d you call both of us cute.”
“I don’t understand what you’re talking about-“
“Why.”
I looked to the side, shivering a little and sighing. I soon peered back at him.
“Look..”
My ahoge resembled a deflated balloon. It was deformed, bent at every inch.
“It just slipped out, okay…?”
He looked at me, unamused, rolling his eyes and sighing.
“Totally…”
“Well, Nagisa and I have to go…”
“Alrighty! See you Nagisa!”
“What about me-“
“What about you?”
I rolled my eyes as I watched Kokichi ruffle Nagisa’s hair. He looked down at the boy expectantly.
“Nagisa has wanted to ask you something, but he’s clearly too shy…”
He nudged Nagisa knowingly, as the small boy stuttered out words.
“Well…I was wondering if some of my friends could have a sleepover…I’ve never had one, and…”
There was an awkward silence as my mind scanned over what I had planned next week. Nothing.
“Or not! T-That’s fine t-too!”
He looked sad and embarrassed at the same time, fiddling uneasily with his fingers, making eye contact with the ground.
“No, its fine! I was just trying to remember if I had anything scheduled next week…We can have one!”
Nagisa’s eye lit up, sparkles glimmering in his blue orbs. He shined so brightly as he bounced around the room excitedly. Then I realized something.
“Wait-“
“What?”
Kokichi looked up at me, clearly waiting for an answer.
“How am I gonna get Kyoko’s motorbike back to her-“
“You drove a motorcycle.”
“Yes-“
Kokichi jingled the keys on his short fingers, swaying them from side to side. He stared into my eyes, smiling.
“Want a ride then? I could pack the motorbike in the back of my car and drop it of to ‘whatever her name is’.”
“Kirigiri.”
“Right.”
The three of us strolled out of the kindergarten, after Kokichi had tidied up all the mess and checked up on everything, locking the doors behind us as we exited the building. Hopping into the car, we all drove off down the road, me directing the other adult towards the crime scene. Leaving the car, I unpacked the motorbike as Kokichi and Nagisa followed me in. I shifted to look back at the others.
“Uhm, I don’t think Nagisa should see this…”
“Why?”
I leaned into Kokichi’s ear and whispered to him.
“Dead body.”
He bobbed his head to show his agreement, Nagisa looking back and forth at us, confused. He held an arm infront of Nagisa, restricting him from going further, as I entered the building.
||POV CHANGE||
NAGISA POV
I watched as Dad entered the house, a bit worried. Why couldn’t I go in there? I decided to ask Kokichi.
“Why can’t I go in? What’s even in there?”
“Something you don’t want to see.”
I gave him a look of uncertainty, waiting for Dad to come back. I was a little worried, so I decided to start a conversation.
“I think you like Dad, am I right?”
“He seems pretty nice, probably would be a good friend.”
“No, you like Dad in that way. Not friendship, love.”
His eyes widened as he blushed furiously.
“W-Why would you t-think that, N-Nagisa?”
“So, you do like him.”
“N-No! I don’t!”
I rolled my eyes a little. It was so obvious. The whole time Kokichi and I were waiting for Dad, he was talking about him. Literally the whole time. I remember our conversation, word for word.
||Flashback||
“Alright! Time to go everyone!”
Kokichi opened the doors, the young children flooding out of the kindergarten. He sighed as he looked around after all the young kids were safely returned to their parents.
“Nagisa, where’s Shuichi?”
“He told me he was investigating today, apparently it was really serious!”
“Right…”
Kokichi sat on one of the chairs, relaxing his legs and leaning against the table. I did the same, and looked at him.
“Y’know, Shuichi is kinda hot.”
“Wha-“
“His hair is pretty, don’t you think?”
All I could do is agree. Kokichi peered down at his watch. 2:10. He sighed.
“I’m just going to text him-“
“Don’t.”
“Why not?”
“He never answers when he’s at work…”
Kokichi fiddled the phone in his hands, clearly annoyed. Probably wanted to see Shuichi. Who knows?
“I know someone who does answer their phone though.”
He peered at me and handed me his phone. I cheerfully took it and tried to memorize their number. Typing it in, I quickly added the number to Kokichi’s contacts and texted the person. I had seen their number when Shuichi and Kokichi exchanged phone numbers.
‘Hello, do you know Shuichi Saihara by any chance? If so, do you know where he is?’
‘Yes, Shuichi is my work partner at the detective agency. We are currently investigating together. Who is this?’
‘This is Nagisa, his adoptive son. I’m texting him on my kindergarten teacher’s phone. I just wanted to tell him that kindergarten ended 12 minutes ago.’
‘Thank you Nagisa. I will have Shuichi know. He sure is forgetful.’
‘Thank you! Can I please know your name?’
‘Kyoko. Kyoko Kirigiri.’
‘Wait, how do you know my number?’
‘I memorized it when I saw Shuichi and my teacher exchange numbers. Sorry if that’s creepy or anything…’
‘It’s fine. I have to go now. Goodbye Nagisa!’
‘Bye!’
I turned off the phone, the glowing screen fading into pitch black darkness. I peered at Kokichi, telling him that Shuichi should be here soon.
||Present Time||
We were still waiting for Shuichi when I spotted Kyoko and himself exit the huge building. Kyoko stared at me, grinning slightly.
“Are you Nagisa?”
I nodded as she walked up to me, ruffling my hair playfully, then glaring at Shuichi. I could see him gulp and look away.
“And you are…?”
“I’m Kokichi, Nagisa’s teacher.”
“Nice to meet you.”
They shook hands, smiling at each other joyfully.
||POV CHANGE||
KIRIGIRI POV
I’m a little disappointed in Shuichi if I’m being honest.
Leaving your kid who’s in kindergarten with his teacher?
I mean, me and Shuichi have known each other since we were kids and happened to get into the same agency. I know Shuichi. He is forgetful, but not this forgetful. I mentally facepalmed at his previous actions and shook hands with Kokichi.
Nagisa and Kokichi look like they have a close relationship.
I disconnected our hands, watching as Kokichi signalled for Shuichi to enter the car. The two closed the doors behind them, waiting for Nagisa to say goodbye. The younglings hand reached for the door handle, struggling to open the car door. I went to assist him, just to realise it was locked. Shuichi and Kokichi strained to unlock the doors from the inside.
How did this even happen-
“D-Dad!
Nagisa panicked as he saw the two people he seemed to be the closest to stuck inside the black and white car. I sighed as I saw the trapped kindergarten teacher flirt with the parent. Shuichi literally looked like his parents were a combination of a tomato and strawberry. I watched them as they continued to flirt together. I mentally facepalmed and refocused on the incident infront of me.
I saw Nagisa’s confused face as he walked up to peer through the window, prying into their business. I gently tapped the window, catching their attention.
“Are you two lovebirds done?”
I yelled from the other side of the window. They both were facing me, furiously blushing. In full honesty, they look like they dyed their faces bright pink.
“I’m going to break the window- “
“NAGISA DON’T- “
Too late. Nagisa had grabbed a rock off the ground and pounded it against the window.
“Really- “
“Sorry I was panicking…”
“It’s fine…”
“I guess we’re driving back with a broken window.”
“I guess they call you a detective for a reason!”
Kokichi laughed at his own joke as Shuichi giggled as well. It was so obvious they liked each other, they were so blind and dense. I could tell they liked each other, yet they were uncertain the other loved them back. I sighed and grabbed my purple helmet, putting the blue one Shuichi used in my sleek black bag.
“I’ll be going now.”
I waved goodbye as I hopped onto the motorbike, smiling as my purple streaks of hair flowed relaxingly behind me as I sped down the road. Out of the corner of my eyes. I could see the Kokichi pull Shuichi into a quick kiss through the car’s windscreen, Nagisa just staring in horror. Poor innocent thing.
-BONUS SCENE-
||TIME SKIP||
||W.O.H SLEEPOVER PLANNING||
||3RD PERSON||
“Hey Nagisa…Hey Jataro…I was thinking, I really want to get away from my parents…Do you know anything I could do?”
Kotoko raised a finger to her chin, in deep thought, looking a little depressed. Jataro looked sad as well.
“I just want to get away from everyone…”
Nagisa peered down, sad from seeing his friends loose hope. Monaca wheeled herself over to join our conversation.
“I just want someone to notice me…”
Masaru sat on the ground soon after, despairful.
“I just want to have a peaceful household…”
Nagisa peered down at the ground, wanting to encourage his friends to be joyful. Sure, he had trauma as well, but there is still happiness. He just began to spit out words of reassurance to his small group of friends.
“Jataro, why would you want to disappear from everyone? We are all here. We want you to be here. What’s that point in leaving everyone if everyone needs you here?”
He peered up at Nagisa, who was staring at him, the boy’s wise words causing a smile to form on his face.
“Monaca, we are your friends We notice you. Stop acting like nobody does, because if you haven’t already guessed, you are our friend. We notice you. Why would I be talking to you if I didn’t know you were here?”
She smiled at the blue haired boy, watching as some of the other kindergarten teachers came over. Komaru, Toko and Nagito stood there, watching their students, along with Kokichi who the whole time had secretly been there, unnoticed.
“Masaru! Kotoko! I think I have a solution to your problems!”
Nagisa shouted as the teachers watched, inspired by the boy’s acts of hope. Nagito especially. Toko had to slap a hand over his mouth so they wouldn’t interrupt the kids. Nagisa thought of the time where he was talking to Kirigiri while saying his goodbyes. She had told him these exact words.
“Shuichi has been so happy since he adopted you, y’know. I’ve been thinking about what my future would be like if I had a child. Say, did you know any that need a better home? I do want more than one though…”
“There is a solution I might have, but I need to check. Also, my Dad agreed on the idea to have a sleepover!”
“Sounds great!”
Everyone cheered in unison as they started planning what they would do, also deciding what snacks to bring. Monaca was spinning in her wheelchair in excitement, Masaru pushing her around in circles while Jataro inspired them to continue. Kotoko and Nagisa were drawing each other with crayons, Kokichi sitting on the other side of the table, spreading conversations.
Soon enough, it was time to go home. They all wished each other goodbye, as Kokichi drove Nagisa back to their house. They parked in the driveway, to see Shuichi waiting for them on their front porch.
“Good afternoon you two! How was your day?”
Kokichi ruffled Nagisa’s hair as he explained his day to Shuichi, also asking if he could tell Kirigiri about what I had found out.
“Ah- Sorry, Kyoko wants to see me. I will tell her the news as well Nagisa.”
“Bye!”
The small boy and Kokichi cheered and waved in unison, watching as Shuichi peered back at them, about to leave.
“Bye! I love both of you. And this time, I mean it.”

Snippet from my (other) overly complicated Akeshu Time Loop fic where everyone except Akira (mostly) remembers the previous year:
Akechi Goro’s apartment was nothing like what Ann had expected it to be. Though admittedly her imagination had been a bit conflicted on what she should expect.
The shiny, polite Ace Detective facade he showed the world suggested she should expect a living space ripped straight out of a designer magazine. Attractive but stiff, nice to look at but difficult to actually live in let alone be comfortable in when visiting.
On the other hand, what she’d seen of his other side - the feral, blood thirsty and thoroughly nasty Black Mask - made her think of a dungeon like space. Chains on the walls, maybe one of those disturbing cluttered spaces shown on crime dramas when the heroes were hunting a serial killer. Pictures with blacked out eyes pinned to the walls, red string connecting disparate and terrifying thoughts and images, a collection of weapons on display.
What she got was…neither of those.
Shiho led her down the kind of pleasant residential area that put Ann in mind of the best kind of summers as a kid. A big park, open friendly faces, a community that seemed friendly and kind to each other. Shiho smiled and waved to a number of people on their way, the few they stopped to chat with for a bit telling her to give their hellos on to Akechi before letting them continue.
The apartment itself was the converted guest house in the back garden of what looked to be a cheerful family home. Ann counted no less than three fat cats lazing about and when they approached a delightfully plump old woman seated in a rocking chair on the front porch sat up from her reading to say hello and welcome Ann. Shiho called her Obaasan and rushed to give her a hug like she really was Shiho’s beloved grandmother before the old woman ushered them down the side path towards the back of the house.
“That’s Goro’s landlady, Shibata-San,” Shiho said as they walked the narrow path that led along the side of the house and through a truly beautiful garden. “She’s super sweet but has trouble with her arthritis sometimes. She gives Goro a deal on the rent since he helps her out so much around the house and with her gardening.”
Akechi Goro being nice to little old ladies. Ann wasn’t certain if that was exactly what she expected from the deranged killer pretending to be a charming teen detective or something so far out of the realm of expected as to be laughable. She chose to make a polite hmm noise of interest instead, not wanting to break the good mood Shiho was in by bringing up how very much Ann hated Akechi. She was rewarded by Shiho smiling warmly at her, which was really all the shorter girl would need to do to convince Ann to murder someone in Shiho’s name.
Shiho knocked at the door and Ann took a final calming breath to prepare her for the night that lay ahead of her. It was just a few hours, and she’d be there with Shiho and there would be plenty of other people to help buffer her from Akechi and Akira. Ann had helped shoot a god in the face once, she was ready for anything Akechi might throw at her over a few hours of talking about a book.
She wasn’t even close to ready, as it turned out.
The realization settled in the moment the door opened to reveal a yawning Akechi standing before her with messy hair and Featherman themed pajamas. Rumpled and clearly well worn Featherman pajamas.
Ann felt her eyes widen comically at the sight of the boy that had once been her and her team’s arch nemesis. A known and dangerous killer who had taken countless lives in the name of his twisted revenge scheme.
He was wearing adorable unicorn slippers. Their horns were rainbow.
“Ah, Shiho!” Akechi said through his yawn, face stretching into a warm smile as he spotted the shorter girl on the other side of the threshold. “Just in time, I need help hauling Akira’s dead weight to the bedroom.” Ann watched him scratch lazily at his chin before blinking his attention over to her and offered another smile. It was a  brittle, plastic thing in comparison to the honest warmth he’d offered the shorter girl. All polish and teeth, no actual emotion. “And Takamaki-San, I’m so glad you could join us for the evening.”
He looked anything but, especially with the white knuckled grip he had on the door handle.
Ann offered a strained smile of her own. She’d made a promise to Shiho damnit and she’d see it through if it killed her. Or if Akechi killed her. Whatever. The point was that she was going to try damnit.
“Wouldn’t miss it for the world!” She said as Akechi stepped back to allow them inside. Shiho gave a faint wince at the overly perky tone Ann had and shoot she’d overshot the enthusiasm a bit. Oh well. Better to be too excited than not enough. She followed Shiho’s lead in taking her shoes off and slipping on a pair of house slippers before turning her attention to the apartment itself.
It was…surprisingly cozy.
Ann was surprised too by the amount of clutter taking up the apartment. A laundry basket of half-folded, clean clothes sitting next to the couch, a knocked over bag tossed on a side table by the front door, more pillows and blankets than Ann would have expected making it seem like a nice place to curl up and read in. The apartment still managed to look tidy despite the half hearted attempt at organization.
Most of the space consisted of a living room with a tiny kitchenette tucked in a corner. There was a small nook beside the cooking area likely meant for dining. The small table placed there was taken over by a nice looking chess set, leaving no room for any actual dining. A small blackboard hung on the wall beside it, tallying victories of each player - tied, from what Ann could see, between Akechi and Kurusu. Other than that there were a couple doors leading to what she presumed to be a bedroom and a bathroom.
It looked so remarkably normal.
Hardwood floors, plush rugs thrown everywhere, overstuffed bookshelves, pictures on the wall. There was a larger one hung over the couch showing off the entire book club smiling brightly at what looked like a cat cafe. Shiho, Akechi, Kurusu, Yoshizawa, even Togo Hifumi and Iwai’s son Kaoru. All of them squeezed together to fit, hands up in peace signs or giving each other bunny ears.
They looked normal. Just kids hanging out, enjoying each other’s company and reading books. It was hard to reconcile the photo with the mental image Ann had of several of the members as potential agents of Yaldabaoth.
Seeing how happy Shiho looked in the pictures didn’t help.
Ann pushed the thoughts away as best she could and followed other two to where a half asleep Akira was laid sprawled half under a large kotatsu. The delinquent had his head thrown back on the couch behind him, one of the many throw pillows Akechi apparently owned curled in his arms. She was surprised to see his usual oversized glasses he so often hid behind tossed haphazardly on the kotatsu. His eyes were closed, but he cracked one open when he heard them come over.
“M’fine here.” He muttered, curling up further around his pillow.
Akechi rolled his eyes.
“There is a bed literally right there.” he pointed at one of the two closed doors for emphasis, mere steps away. Akira was already turning away and wiggling further beneath the kotatsu blanket. “Just go to bed Akira, no one else is even going to be here for another hour at least.”
Ann blinked. “What?” She turned from the drowsy Akira to Shiho, the shorter girl giving an unapologetic, challenging smile.
“Goro said we could come over early so you could get settled in!” Shiho said, chipper and all too aware of the fact that Ann had been banking on keeping her attention on other people in order to ignore Akechi. She really shouldn’t have been surprised. Shiho really did know her too well.
Akechi offered another brittle smile before turning his attention back to Akira, his expression softening again. Ann watched as the detective attempted to scoop the dark haired boy up, only for Akira to slip out of his grasp by going boneless, earning an undignified swear from the detective.
Ann watched as the detective attempted to drag the delinquent away by an arm, amused as Shiho strolled over casually and hauled Akira up over her shoulder - pillow and all - in a fireman’s hold. She did it with such ease that Ann was a left little breathless at the show of strength. Akira wasn’t heavy by any measure but he was tall and she’d seen him working out at the gym the one time she went with Ryuji. The boy had muscle and that couldn’t be light. It didn’t matter to the short girl and her exceptional strength and well… Ann was weak to Shiho in so very many ways.
A few minutes later Akira had been safely stowed in a proper bed, the faint sound of soft snores heard from the dark haired delinquent before Shiho had even made it through the door. Which just left the three of them standing awkwardly in the living room.
Joy.
“I’m not nearly as good as Akira or Boss,” Akechi began, “But I can make a passable cup of coffee with what I’ve got here. Would you like one?”
There was a very real chance he might poison it. Ann nodded anyway to appease Shiho, resigned to the fact that she really was willing to do anything to see the shorter girl smile.
Akechi shuffled towards the kitchenette in his ridiculous fluffy unicorn slippers and began fussing with the various coffee supplies that took up almost all of his very limited counter space. He was even nice enough to pull out a container of some cookies - a favorite brand of Ann’s on top of it - that hadn’t even been opened yet from a cupboard. She felt secure in the knowledge that those at least hadn’t been tampered with as she began happily devouring them.
“He’s still refusing to move in?” Shiho asked Akechi softly as she settled on the plush loveseat adjacent to the couch, tugging Ann down beside her. The dark haired girl pulled her feet up and under her, Shiho’s expression turning concerned as she watched Akechi work.
Akechi gave a soft sigh as he began boiling some water for the coffee. “He’s just so damn stubborn.” The detective said, shoulder’s drooping as he measured the freshly ground coffee out. “That place is killing him, but every time I bring it up he digs his heels in.”
Shiho gave a soft sigh before turning her attention to Ann to explain. “Akira is…” She paused, frowning, “His living situation is…bad.” Ann flicked her attention to Akechi as she heard him mutter a faint fucking understatement of the year under his breath. “Goro has offered to let him stay here but Akira’s worried that his record would hurt Goro’s reputation.”
“Oh,” Ann said, turning her attention on the delicate chocolate dipped cookie she held. Akira’s criminal record, that had been made public and well known by Mishima at Komashida’s request. Because Akira had stepped in and kept the teacher from getting to Shiho. Something Ann should have done. “Isn’t there something he can do? He’s staying with a guardian right? Couldn’t he just request to be moved under someone else?”
Akechi snorted bitterly. “Great idea, so that scam artist can report him as being “dangerous” and get him sent back to Juvie?” Red eyes turned to Ann, pinning her in place as Akechi’s mouth twisted into a sour frown. “You know about shitty adults. You know there really aren’t options like that for people in Akira’s position.”
Ann was struck again by the strange clash between what she expected from Akechi from the last run of the game and what he was showing her in this one.
A facade of niceties for the camera, a howling soul of insanity for anyone who got in his way. Where, exactly, between those two extremes lay concern for a friend in a difficult position? Where did friends lay in that mess at all? Where did the cozy apartment, helping out an arthritic old lady, the weekly book club, the Featherman pajamas? Was there a graph somewhere that might map it all out? Or was she just supposed to guess at what was a real glimpse at the boy that had once murdered her friend’s father and what was an act to get what he wanted?
“Here,” Akechi said, and for a moment she half expected him to hand her the answers she wanted. He didn’t, of course, instead handing her a cup of coffee resting on a matching saucer. Both cup and saucer had cute chubby cats on them. “Cream? Sugar?”
She blinked and nodded, watching as he turned on his heel to get her what she asked for. Shiho beside her shifted where she sat, butting their shoulders together gently. Her face, when Ann met her gaze, was thoughtful. Considering Ann as if she was the puzzle and not the serial killer juggling a carton of cream and an oversized container of sugar across the room. Trying to stow her apprehension away for the night, Ann offered her friend the best honest expression she could while knowing how many lies she’d given the shorter girl over the past months.
Shiho’s expression shifted slowly, the look in her dark eyes difficult to read. Ann watched as the other girl turned to sip at her coffee. Shiho didn’t even wait for it to cool. She always liked her drinks hot enough to scald.
“You know, maybe it’s the way you’re asking.” Shiho said, the complicated emotions Ann glimpsed the moment before shuffled away as the dark haired girl turned a devious smile on Akechi.
The detective looked weary and wary all at once. “Shiho…” His tone had something like a weak warning to it, though the bite Ann was used to hearing from him was absent.
“I’m just saying,” Shigo said, looking delighted, “You’re asking him to move in with you as a friend.”
“Don’t.” Akechi said, it might have been sharp and snapping if it wasn’t for the color rising high on the boy’s cheeks. Ann blinked in bewilderment. Was Akechi Goro blushing?
“Just ask him to be your boyfriend already!” Shiho said, all cheer and delight with an undercurrent of something challenging directed at the now definitely blushing Akechi. “We all saw you two kiss at the ice rink! It’s not like the thing between you it’s a secret!”
Ann choked on the cookie she’d just popped into her mouth. Akechi - so red that Ann was fairly certain he was going to turn purple soon - made a high pitched squeak and buried his face in his hands.
Well that put a new light on things.
“You kissed Kurusu?!” Cookies crumbs went flying as she spoke but Ann didn’t care. The news was just too big to be taken in calmly. Makoto had suspected that Kurusu, a known criminal, was a pawn in Akechi’s devious plan and the rest of the group had been thinking the same. Morgana suggested that the dark haired boy might even be the new player they’d been warned about.
At no point at any of them considered Akechi could be so human as to simply just like Kurusu.
“It’s not that - you’re taking things out of context!” Akechi almost wailed, not a psychopath ready to kill at a drop of a hat but an embarrassed teenage boy being teased about his crush.
Shiho laughed, “You two held hands!”
“I didn’t know how to skate! Kurusu was helping me balance!”
“You stayed on the ice during the couple’s song!”
“We just didn’t want to get off the ice!”
“You stopped, in the middle of the rink, looked deep into each other’s eyes while holding hands and kissed.”
As if to drive her point home, Shiho lifted her phone to show a picture - a bit blurry at the edges but clear enough to make out - of Akechi and Kurusu definitely having a sweet, romantic kiss on the ice. Clearly completely oblivious of the world around them as they did so. It was possibly the cutest thing Ann had ever seen.
Any idea Ann ever had of Akechi Goro being intimidating was thrown right out the window.

An Unexpected Turn Of Events
(Paladin Danse x Preg! F!SoSu)
(Very tempted to still do a Maxson version of this.)
Everything has gone so badly. Danse was accustomed to it though. So many times had he felt like he had the whole thing planned out, just for him to wind up returning to the prydwen short a couple good men and women. It was this fact that often kept him up at night, his self-loathing keeping him from a restful sleep. However, as accustomed to death and injuries as his position had rendered him to being, he couldn’t have prepared for this.
It was just you, him and a whole lot of fusion cells. The mission was to clean out some old building, only expected to have a couple of ferals inside.
That certainly wasn’t the truth.
What was supposed to be an easy fight brought you, his love, to your knees and no longer able to fight. There had been so many of them, much more than your ammunition could keep up with. Grenades seemed like a good idea but in reality if you were to throw one within this range, you’d just end up blowing your limbs off.
Why didn’t you just wear your power armor?
As though things couldn’t get any worse, one of those putrid “glowing ones” emerged from some random post within the crumbling wall. The second the creature made its presence known, raising its recently fallen brethren..Danse thought this would be the end. Judging from your now motionless, laying form..he didn’t really want to continue on anyways. Had it been any other time, a time where adrenaline and sheer terror wasn’t fueling him, he would’ve been screaming his heart out of his chest at the realization you may have just died. He wouldn’t be able to just “soldier through” this one. Not this time.
Just as he was going to give in, let the horde overtake him, the familiar sound of heavy steel boots heralded in a renewed feeling of hope. Bullets like whistles flying through the area as the ever so rare “backup” knights came through guns blazing.
Once the ringing in his ears died down to a somewhat bearable level his first move was to sprint where he knew you had fallen. If you were actually dead..oh god he didn’t want to know at this point. No, he wouldn’t even check for a pulse or breath, he’d just rush his numb being into the nearest vertibird, vaguely recalling his hoarse voice barking orders at the pilots as he cradled you against his cold armored body.
His grasp on you wouldn’t falter for even a second, cradling you to him as though you were his baby. He didn’t care what anyone else on the prydwen thought at the time, even as they cast their worried gazes upon the two of you as he practically dashed for the bay clinic.
From there it was all a huge blur for Danse. Captain Cade had pried you away from the nearly iron like grip he had, allowing the unbelieving Paladin to helplessly watch as your crimson blood pooled and dripped from the several lacerations that littered your motionless body. Watch as Cade jammed rad-x into your arm before hastily beginning to dress your wounds. Watch until finally some scribes forcefully pulled him away from the undeniably terrible sight he bore witness to.
He didn’t go far though.
Luckily he didn’t have to wait too long, hours later being personally approached by one the same scribes that had torn him away.
“Knight Captain-Cade needs to speak with you immediately, sir! The younger man spoke with a rigid solute, only taking his leave whenever danse gave a shaky nod in acknowledgment.
The short walk from his quarters to the clinic hadn’t ever seemed so long before. He supposed the impending doom of whatever news was to befall him would do that though. Each step felt like his feet were made of lead, an unpleasant unrest settling deep within his gut and a strange tightening sensation took place in his calf muscles. By the time he was in the doorway of Cade’s clinic, the amber eyes man found himself blearily blinking away the glassy haze of unshed tears. He couldn’t help but wonder at what step on his way here did he begin to tear up?
Regardless he carefully cleared his throat, grabbing the attention of the grey haired man standing adjacent to him in the small room.
There you were..laying peacefully. Some manner of relief befell him at the sight, a clear heart rate detected on the electrocardiogram you were connected to.
He wasn’t a religious man but boy, was he going to pray thanks to whatever had prevented you from dying. Prevented you from being taken away from him.
“Ah, glad you came so quickly Paladin..there’s a certain hm.” Cade had stopped, already beginning to approach the taller man while still looking down at his clipboard. “Actually, I think you should sit down for this one.” He resumed, a small smile quirking at the corners of his mouth.
If thy didn’t perplex danse, he didn’t quite know what would. On one hand, you looked like you were in stable condition..plus Cade wouldn’t have been smiling if something was gravely wrong. On the other hand....why was Cade smiling?
Complying to the medic’s orders, Danse sat his shaking form down into the torn leather of one of the seats closest to your bedside. “Is..is she going to be okay?” Danse found his voice coming out far more strained that he assumed it would. The nerves and held back tears had eaten up the integrity of his already gruff tone.
To this Cade fully looked Danse in the eye, that mysteriously genuine smile only growing with the contact. Before the Paladin knew what was happening, Cade had tossed his clipboard down onto the seat next to him and clasped his shoulder.
Chuckling, the Captain nodded his head. “That’s the least of your worries now, Paladin. Our knight is going to be just fine, she just needs to rest for a while.” Danse felt the weight of the earth itself be lifted from his shoulders, his amber eyes now inquisitively narrowing as he tried to decipher just why it was that Cade wasn’t just cutting straight to the point as he usually did. “However...you might want to think twice before you take her out. Look, she’s one of the best we have, true..but..well, let’s just say fighting ghouls probably isn’t the best thing for her in this state.”
“What? What do you me-“ “I mean the two of you are about to be held up with something else more pressing. I was running some routine wellness tests and I found something unusual, considering your intimate involvement with the Knight you should be the first to know. Congratulations Danse, you’re going to be a father.”
And just like that, Danse felt like he was going to stroke out. Did he hear Cade right? What? Of course he did!
Blinking a few times to hopefully help himself process, Danse stared in disbelief. Within moments though, a rare huge smile enveloped the Paladin usual scowling face. Shooting up from his seated position, he was at your side in no time.
“How far long?” He asked after a moment or two, his happy eyes scanning you up and down mirthfully. “Can’t be too far hm?” Amber eyes stopped right at your midsection to further his question.
“No..not at all, I’d say maybe eight weeks at the very most.”
Danse was completely in awe..but even that sweet, uncharacteristic joy came to an abrupt crash when he realized one key detail.
You almost got killed today..which meant in this state..he wouldn’t have only lost the one person that made him whole, he would’ve also lost his unborn baby and wouldn’t have even known the difference.
The thought brought a new wave of tears to his eyes, he wouldn’t dare let them spill, at least not where the doctor could see. Instead he’d lean down and bury his face into the crook of your neck, pressing a soft kiss below your ear and gingerly bringing his large hand to press into the area he imagined your little baby was growing. Soon it took everything he had to not openly sob.
What if things wouldn’t have gone as well as they did?
He wouldn’t dare let that be a possibility anytime soon. No. So instead he’d eagerly await your awakening at your side, ready to be there as Cade breaks the news to you as well and be there for whatever reaction you may have. He’ll also be there for you every step of the way, be it reassurance or anything you need of him- he’ll be there for you and for your new little baby.
He’ll be there for his family, he promises.

Easy Come Easy Go~ CH 2
~A degree in not taking anyone's bullshit~
As they walked towards the house, the group was approached by a blue-clad man.
“Anderson, here we are again, '' Sherlock said sarcastically.
“This is a crime scene. I don’t want it contaminated. Are we clear?”
“Quite clear, and is your wife away for long?”
“Don’t pretend you worked that out. Someone told you that,”
“My deodorant?”
“It’s for men,”
“Of course it’s for men, I’m wearing it,”
“So is sergeant Donovan,” Sherlock proclaimed dramatically and Delila sighed, rolling her eyes, “Phew, and I think it just vaporised, may I go in?”
“Now, whatever you’re trying to imply,”
“I’m not implying anything. I’m sure Sally came ‘round for a nice little chat and just happened to stay over,'' Sherlock brushed by them, pausing at the top of the stairs to look down his nose as Anderson, face barely hiding his triumphant joy, “And I’m assuming she scrubbed your floors going by the state of her knees,”
“I-“ Donovan and Anderson were both rendered speecess by this. Sherlock vanished inside and John sidled past them, clearly feeling the secondhand embarrassment of the encounter, limp extremely pronounced as he struggled up the stoop. Delila glided past the adulterous duo, amusement clear on her face as she followed the two men inside. They’d gone further into the hallway and Delila took her time to take in the surroundings, and she could hear them talking in the hallway.
“Who’s this?” Lestrade’s voice floated down the hallway.
“He’s with me,”
“Yeah but who is he?”
“I said he’s with me,”
“Is this a bad time, boys?” She asked from where she leaned in the doorway, eyebrows raised.
“Ye- Delila?!?!? What on earth are you doing here?” Lestrade looked as if he’d seen a ghost- mildly panicked and extremely confused.
“Ah, hello again,” the tallest of the group remarked as he turned to look at his blonde companion again.
“But… You’re not due until the 16th!!’” Lestrade exclaimed
“Doctor Watson, what is today’s date?” Delila asked the blonde, turning to him as well.
“February 17th,”
“…oh,” Lestrade looked sheepishly to the side, “I- uh..”
“Missed picking me up from my flight? Missed most of my calls? Left me alone in a city I didn’t know?” Delila asked amusedly before crossing the room to kiss him on the cheek, “Apology accepted. Now, onto the other reason I’m here. Do you need some help?”
“...We might, actually. Um, Sherlock, this is-“
“Your daughter, Delila Lestrade. Yes I am aware. Now, where are we?”
“Upstairs. Delila, you can tag along. Do you have gloves in that little bag of yours?”
“Always,”
“Wait, does she even have jurisdiction here?” John asked.
“Well, do you?” She remarked, not looking at him as they climbed the stairs.
“Erm, I don’t think so,”
“I can give you guys 2 minutes,”
“May need longer,”
“The name’s Jennifer Wilson, according to the credit cards. We’re running them now for contact details. Hasn’t been here long, some kids found her.”
“Did she have anything with her? She looks to be dressed for travel, and rain. Umbrella or a purse maybe?” Delila asked, taking in her surroundings as they came to the top of the stairs.
“Not much, she had her wallet, and an umbrella in her pocket,”
“That’s odd….” Delila murmured. They fell silent, and Delila reached into her small blue purse to retrieve a pair of black latex gloves. She pulled them on, sanitised her hands, and then watched as Sherlock started to inspect the body. It was silent for a long minute.
“Shut up,”
“I- uh nobody said anything!”
“You were thinking, it’s annoying,” Sherlock remarked and Delila scoffed in amusement. He looked up and narrowed his eyes, brows slightly furrowed.
“Something funny?”
“Nothing, you’re just… different than I expected,”
“And what is that supposed to mean?”
“You’re peculiar, can’t tell if that’s a good or bad thing yet,” Delila replied, not breaking eye contact. He huffed and reached into his pocket, pulling out his phone and typing away at it.
“Well, what have you got?”
“Not much,”
“She’s German, rache, German for revenge. She could be trying to tell us-” Sherlock shut the door before Anderson could finish.
“Yes, thank you for your input,”
“So she’s German?”
“You’re kidding,” Delila gave her father a deadpan look.
“What?”
“Of course she’s not German.” She replied with a sigh.
“She is from out of town though. Planned to stay in London for one night before returning home to Cardiff. So far so obvious,”
“Sorry, obvious?”
“But the message-” Lestrade insisted.
“Dr. Watson, what do you think?”
“Of the message?” John asked, tilting his head slightly to the side.
“Of the body, you’re a medical man,”
“What? No! I’ve got a whole team outside,” Lestrade broke in.
“They won’t work with me,”
“I’m breaking every rule letting you in here,”
“Yes, because you need me,” Sherlock leveled Lestrade with a serious stare and the latter let out a disgruntled sigh.
“You’re right. I do. God help me,” he admitted after a moment.
“Well I’m not quite god, but you did bring me along for this reason, no?”
“Oh... uh-yeah. Sherlock, Delila has a degree in forensic science,”
“I’d be happy to offer my expertise, Mr Holmes,”
“I suppose you’ll do, Miss Lestrade,” Sherlock replied dismissively.
“Doctor, actually. I didn’t waste away amongst the religious southern zealots at Duke university for nothing,” Delila approached the body and set to work.
“Anderson, keep everyone out for a couple of minutes,” Lestrade disappeared and John leaned closer to his companion.
“Well what am I doing here?” John whispered.
“You were supposed to be helping helping me make a point,”
“I’m supposed to be helping you pay rent,”
“Well this is more fun,”
“Fun? There’s a woman lying dead!”
“Perfectly astute observation, Dr. Watson,” Delila remarked, peeling off her gloves, “But there’s more to it than that. Asphyxiation, fell unconscious and choked to death on her own puke… Likely one of those suicides that the Yard’s been investigating, based on the timing and the fact that there are no outward signs of drugs or alcohol. Citrus smell around the mouth is exceptionally strong, likely going to be stronger when her stomach is opened,” Delila pushed her glasses up on her nose, “I’ve got more to say, but I’ll leave the rest to Mr. Holmes and his- what did it say on the website again..? Oh yes- deductions,”
“Alright. What’ve you got?” Lestrade asked before the smartass brunette could comment.
“The victim is in her late 30’s, a professional person going by her clothes, something in the media going by the frankly alarming shade of pink. Married for at least 10 years but not happily, she had a string of lovers but none of them knew she was married,”
“Are you just making this up?”
“Her wedding ring, dad. Her jewelry is clean but her wedding ring is dirty and beaten. She cleans everything but the ring, so obviously it doesn’t mean much to her-” Delila explained, “Or...uh it didn’t mean much to her,”
“Not just that. The inside of her ring is clean. It’s regularly removed but not for polishing. The only polishing it gets is when she works it off her finger. Look at her nails, she doesn’t work with her hands. So what or who does she take it off for? Certainly not one lover, she’d never be able to sustain the illusion of being single for that long. Simple really,”
“That’s brilliant!”
“Agreed, Dr. Watson,” Delila tilted her head to the side, “The fact that you can perceive all of that in a matter of minutes. Have you officially tested your IQ or-?”
“Delila, focus!” Lestrade snapped and Delila flushed slightly.
“Sorry, continue,” She said sheepishly, looking away, balling up her gloves and putting them in her purse.
“You said she’s from Cardiff,”
“It’s obvious isn’t it?”
“Not to me..”
“It has to do with her jacket, yes? Like I said earlier? She’s dressed for travel. It’s wet along the underside of the collar and along the back. I’ve been around London all day just wandering and there hasn’t been a drop of rain.”
“You’re not as dumb as everyone else. Yes. Her coat is still wet so she can’t have travelled more than 2-3 hours. Because the inside of her collar is dry it means she’s turned it up against the wind. Strong wind that had to be over 15 kilometers per hour, otherwise she would’ve used her umbrella. Strong wind, heavy rains, 2-3 hour travel time. Cardiff. Simple,”
“That’s fantastic!”
“Do you realise you say that out loud?”
“Sorry I’ll shut up,”
“No.. it’s fine,”
“Cardiff… Media. Shouldn’t she have a suitcase? She seems fashion forward,” Delila asked
“Overnight bag maybe?” John suggested.
“Suitcase, yes she had one. Where is it then? What have you done with it?”
“How do you know she had a case?”
“Small splash marks along the heel and calf, small bag going by the spread. Wouldn’t get this pattern any other way.”
“Well, hate to break it to you but there isn’t a case,”
“Say that again?”
“There wasn’t a case, sherlock. There was never any case,”
“Suitcase! Has anyone seen a suitcase?!? Was there a suitcase in this house?!?”
“Sherlock there wasn’t any case!”
“They take the poison themselves, they chew, swallow the pills themselves. Clear signs- even you lot couldn’t miss them!”
“Yeah thanks, and?”
“....Murder?”
“Don’t know how just yet, but they’re killings. All of them, serial killings. We’ve got ourselves a serial killer; god I love those, always something to look forward to. Serial killers are hard though, you have to wait for them to make a mistake,”
“We can’t just wait!”
“We’re done waiting. Don’t you see? Houston we have a mistake,”
“What mistake?”
“Her case! Where is her case? Did she eat it?”
“Oh. Someone else was here, took her luggage. That means the killer had to have driven her here! Forgot they had it?”
“-oh! OH! Phone to Cardiff, find out who Jennifer Wilson’s family and friends were! Find Rachel!”
“What mistake?”
“Pink!”
“Well, isn’t that clever?”
“What is?”
“They’re abductions, obviously,”
“Obviously,” Anderson sneered, “Great, another one,”
“Shut up, Anderson,” Lestrade snapped and Anderson gave an offended look to the Detective Inspector. John stared after them for a long moment after the two men disappeared.
“Don’t get yourself all worked up over him, John. Shall we?” She gestured down the stairs.
“I guess we shall,”
“Would you happen to want to grab a cup of coffee or something? I don’t drink, so that’s the best I can offer you,”
“That sounds nice, actually,”
“Was he your ride?”
“Well, a cab was my ride, but he’s the one who called it,” John replied and Delila laughed. As they left the building a voice called out.
“He’s gone,”
“Sherlock Holmes?”
“Yeah, he just took off, he does that,”
“Likely he’s not coming back then?”
“Doesn’t look like it,”
“Right… erm-”
“Well, we’re in Brixton, yeah? Any idea where we could hail a taxi?”
“Try the main road,”
“Thanks,” Delila held the tape up and john ducked underneath.
“But you’re not his friend. He doesn’t have friends,” Donovan said to John, “So who are you?”
“Nobody, I’m nobody. I- uh- I just met him,”
“I assume the same goes for you, whoever you are?” she asked Delila.
“I’d say it’s none of your business, but obviously you have something to say so go ahead”
“Just a bit of advice, you both. Stay away from that guy,”
“Why, exactly?”
“You know why he’s here?”
“It’s his job?”
“He’s not paid or anythin’. He likes it, he gets off on it, The weirder the crime, the more he gets off,”
“Says the officer in the homicide division,”
“-as I was saying. Be careful, because one day showing up just won’t be enough for him. One day we’ll be standing ‘round a body and Sherlock Holmes will be the one who put it there,”
“You’re telling us this, why?”
“Because he’s a psychopath, and psychopaths get bored,”
“Bravo. Stunning psychoanalysis, Sergeant,”
“Excuse me?”
“Bit of advice for you too, Sally. Stick to the dead people. Obviously the living ones are too complex for you to wrap your head around,”
“Delila! You’re- um- still here?”
“Yes, sorry. I was suffering through your Sergeant’s cookie-cutter judgements,”
“...Right. Do try to be nice to my officers, Delila. They’re the best I’ve got,”
“You could do better. Anyways, I’m going out for coffee with Dr Watson. Call me if you need me. Or actually, just remember to actually call me period.”
“I will, I promise. Donovan, come on,”
“Coming,”
“So then, coffee?”
“I think I saw a small café on Baker street. I know the owner,”
“I have zero idea where baker street is, but lead the way,”

Thanks For the Save - Kirishima x reader
Word count: 2,129
Warnings: nearly dying
A/n: I have not finished the Sports Festival arc yet, I just saw something on one episode, had the idea and thought "Hmm, it's his birthday soon!" I may go back and edit this later after watching more. I wish I could have written something that was about his birthday, but this is what I got for ya'll. Also it's also been a month since I got a tumblr account and started this blog. So it's my blog's 1 month anniversary along with Kirishima’s birthday.
~
"Sports festival?" You turned around to the girl who had mentioned it.
"The Sports Festival. Where the entire school showcases their abilities in games for everyone to see. One of the biggest events. It's also a great opportunity to be noticed by agencies," she added with a twinkle in her eye.
"I know what it is, who doesn't? But already?"
"Yep!" She bounced on her toes, causing her short brown hair to sway. Definitely one of the most peppy girls in the class.
Your breathing quickened at the news. This was it. This was your chance. You couldn’t afford to mess up. Of course. Your grades would suffer from training. But you never even wanted to end up in the business course in the first place.
"What do you mean?" You had fought the urge to stand up when you heard it.
The person in front of you stayed as calm as ever behind his wooden desk. "You failed the entrance exam. But, we believe you're better suited for the business course."
"The b-business course?" Your eyebrows knitted together in frustration. Your heart had a temper tantrum, only restrained by your ribcage.
"Your parents recommended it and are already beginning to fill out the paperwork. What do you say? We would be happy to have you."
Your hands clenched on your knees. Of course your parents wanted you to join the business course. They thought you weren't cut out for being a hero. That didn't stop you from taking the entrance exam, but clearly that didn't work.
Your mind raced. What were you going to do? What could you do? You didn't want this and it would be torture to go to the same building as the hero cou- wait! The Sports Festival! If you were in the school you could participate in the Sports Festival and get another shot! They would see they were wrong and that you did have talent. Plus you would have extra time to train, in secret of course.
The day had come. There were crowds of people spilling into the U.A. grounds, a strange sight as a student. The place almost seemed completely transformed, now feeling like a festival ground rather than a school. You were happy that in the past the security check weren't as strict.
"You know what? Sign me up."
There was another reason it felt different. When you were there as a spectator, it all felt lighthearted, a break, and your heart raced in anticipation for the games. It was racing now too, but in a mix of adrenaline and anxiety. You weren't sure if you liked it. What was once a fun place suddenly felt nerve racking.
What if you couldn’t do it? What if you blew your chance? What if you never became a hero?
You took a deep breath. You had to do this. You shook your arms in attempt to loosen them and relax.
It was time. The obstacle course had been chosen and everyone stood at the gate. Waiting for all three lights on the red gate to turn off.
Three
You took another deep breath.
Two
What if you couldn’t do this? What if you weren't cut out for being a hero?
One
No, you were! After all that training and hard work. You had to. You had this.
"Start!"
Instant chaos insued. Everyone pushed and shoved to make it through the gate. One person's elbow jabbed you in the face, causing you to temporarily forget about everything aside from the pain. You held your nose and snarl.
Why was it so narrow? You'd think-
That’s when it hit you. They were already getting the weaker students out of the way. You began to use your abilities and leaped over someone when a sudden burst of cold struck your skin. It caused you to flinch, and thus make a mistake that almost cost you your momentum. You focused all your attention on getting out, and only learned someone had frozen the ground from the blinding reflection on the road ahead and resounding complaints.
It was a constant struggle to even continue moving, feeling like you were giving your all to even keep up, but you managed to keep moving forward.
When it finally seemed to be letting up, the ground began rumbling. The vibrations tickled your feet. You began to slow down, looking around frantically to figure out what was causing it. For a second you were afraid that the ground was going to open up. You looked ahead and saw what it really was. It might actually be worse.
It was the faux villains, the robots from the examine that had haunted your dreams and invaded your thoughts. Your heart rate quickened. Your lungs took in more air. No. No. No. Not again. You couldn’t fail again. You weren't going to fail again.
The other students also froze at the giant robots towering over you. Rolling closer. Well, everyone except the half and half kid. He was already past the first layer of smaller bots and facing the ones the size of buildings. He waved his hand out. Instantly, ice climbed up the robot at a tremendous rate. Glittering ice spears covered it. A rush of white mist covered the whole area.
A thought suddenly struck you. The robot was frozen. And there was a mist, meaning maybe the smaller ones wouldn't be able to detect you. You could easily just run through. Before the chance left or the mist cleared, you began running.
The cold air enveloped you and nipped at your skin. It stung your lungs as you kept breathing it in. You didn't know if you ever ran that fast before. Through the mist, you spotted something solid coming towards you. Then a red light above it. You slid and dodged the robots arm just in time. Now to run right past or through the frozen robot.
You heard some kids yelling behind you.
"I wouldn't do it if I were you," you subconsciously heard. It was the boy who had frozen it. He was a lot farther ahead of you now.
Now you were paying attention.
"I froze them when they were unbalanced," he finished calling out.
Your heart dropped into your stomach. A look up confirmed the robot beginning to tip over in your direction. It was too late to turn back and you froze.
The very same robots present during your failure were tumbling on top of you to end your life. It felt like a nightmare you would've had. You hoped it was a nightmare otherwise your life might be cut short.
If you were in a movie, everyone would have screamed at you to run and called you stupid. You were screaming at yourself and calling yourself stupid. But your legs stayed motionless. It was happening to fast and slow at the same time. The green metal quickly approached you, but you still couldn-
"LOOK OUT!"
Suddenly you were tossed aside.
Something touched you, you flew through the air, then you tumbled onto the ground.
A crash resounded and you instinctively curled up on yourself and covered your head. You held your breath when a cloud of dirt washed over you. Once your heart slowed down a fraction and you could think again, it suddenly occurred to you that someone had thrown you and saved you. It nearly gave you a heart attack, between the panic of suddenly being in the air and the shock of falling coursing through you. But otherwise, you would be dead.
Wait.
Your eyes widened. "Oh no." That person was with you, where the you would have gotten crushed. They would be under the robot.
You got up and stumbled to the wreckage. Were they alive? Could you dig them out? Was it too late? This was all your fault, if you hadn't been in the way...
However, before you could even think of a way you could use your quirk to get him or her out, there was a crashing sound. You looked up to the source, just in time to see someone break out the top.
"Like I'd die!" A boy with spiky red hair yelled as be broke free. It may have been your imagination, but his skin appeared rock-like.
You breathed a sigh of relief when you saw him. You suddenly remembered a flash of red in your vision just before you were thrown, and his voice matched the warning you received just before.
He looked at the path ahead angrily. His mouth was moving, but you couldn’t hear what he was saying. You strained to hear what he was saying and managed to catch the end.
"She could have been killed if I weren't there!"
At that moment he looked to you. You suddenly felt put on the spot and tensed up. What should you do? Wave? Smile? Would that be weird? Your heart speed up as you panicked. His gaze softened when he looked at you. What was he thinking? Oh, you should probably thank him. Should you do that now? Would it be a good time or would that be weird?
Before you could decided. There was another crashing sound and a metal person popped out. This distracted him again and they both started running on top of the wreckage.
Oh, that's right! The race! You needed to get going. You couldn’t afford to lose! You couldn’t let almost dying be for nothing.
You seemingly scrambled to start running and felt like an out of control rock rolling down a hill.
You bit your lip as you looked in his direction. You would have to thank him later.
You spotted him later. You were walking around and your eyes scanned the people around you, but one caught your eye. You did a doubletake. Red spiky hair. It was him.
"Hey!" You called out before even thinking about it.
He turned to look at you and you suddenly felt put on the spot again. You stopped a few feet in front of him. ... What were you going to say again? Argh! Oh, right!
"I- uh, thank you," you blurted out before you could mess up. "Thank you for saving me, y'know, when the robot kinda fell." Curse your awkwardness of speaking to strangers your age!
His inquisitive expression changed to one of joy with a large toothy grin, showcasing his sharp teeth. "No problem. It was the manly thing to do. I'm really happy you're alright."
"Yeah, me too. Thank you." You already said that. "So, um..." Say something! What were you doing? "You're in the hero course?"
"Yup!"
"Awesome. That must be cool."
"It sure is. What course are you in?"
"Business course."
"Oh! Lots of smart business stuff I wouldn't understand?"
"Probably not. Though some of it is just logic. Though... I didn't want... to be there," you slowly admitted.
"Really?" He tilted his head. "Then why are you taking it?"
"Oh, my parents wanted me to do it. Thought I'd be more successful as that than a hero." You said it like it was all a joke. Like everything was fine. Maybe it was the fact that no one else asked about it, but you dropped the act and stared down. "I only agreed because I knew if I was technically in U.A., then I could participate in the Sports Festival. I could get another chance to be noticed and put into the hero course. I trained really hard for it too."
His gaze softened as he stared at you, absorbing every word.
"I... really thought the Sports Festival would be my second chance," you continued.
He stayed silent for a second. Then he put his hand on your shoulder. It caught your attention and you looked up at him. "Maybe you could train with me sometime," he suggested.
"Really!?" You took a step back. "You'd be okay with that? I don't wanna bother you." You brought your arm close to your chest. Why would someone in 1A want to be around someone like you?
"It wouldn't be a problem at all. I love to meet new people, especially if they have the same passions as me." He used his thumb to point to himself with the other hand on his hip. "So are you in?"
A smile grew, illuminating your face. Your whole body seemed to lighten from an invisible load. "Yes! I would love that! Thank you."
"No problem. By the way, I'm Kirishima. Kirishima Eijirou," he introduced himself as you walked off together.
You did the same and soon began falling into a conversation that felt so natural. The exchange was easy, seamless, and you laughed. The first real laugh you had in a long time.
