So here’s the thing, when Nia (@_pagesgaloree ) and Crystal (@melanatedreader ) was giving The Love Songs of W.E.B Dubois all of its praises. I had to go in beast mode to obtain a copy myself and when I received my copy I was very ecstatic. (You just don’t know how happy I was when I received this book) But I had to wait to crack this bad boy open because my mind was preoccupied, so about 2 days ago with a clear mind I decided to read a few pages. A few pages turned into 20 which turned into 40 which turned into about 100 and something pages. And BAYBEEEE!!!! This is the one right here!!! THIS NOVEL RIGHT HERE!! Is everything and I’m not even done yet. Listen if you have it in your possession, you need to stop playing and open this book! You don’t know what you are missing!! Oh and I thought this was the most cutest bookmark I seen at some store 🤣🤣 I said all this to say Honorée (@honoree_jeffers) you did your thang on this one! Can you share your thoughts on the tracklist order as a whole? I feel like it doesn't make a lot of sense to me but I probably just need a deeper analysis of it

hey anon! i’ll try my best! i think it’s very nicely ordered... IFTYE followed by cruel summer almost represents a nice fresh start; a clean slate, and she goes from forgetting someone’s existence and feeling more than okay about it to screaming to the rooftops that she loves someone else with absolutely everything in her despite the circumstances and the cruelty of a summer romance...

and then it’s lover which is TheLoveSong of all love songs and a beautiful, magical, raw and toned down, strung-back version of that loved-up feeling she has in cruel summer

and i think the man coming after this is kinda random and i don’t really have any thoughts on its placement other than if a man wrote a love song like that they’d get a ton more praise for it than someone like taylor does idk....

and the archer is well... track 5....

and then comes the exciting bit where we go from i think he knows to miss americana to paper rings to cornelia st.... we go from taylor feeling really confident in herself and about her love for him so much so that she’s sure he knows too, to miss americana where they’re kinda blended in on the bleachers/sidelines, just the two of them, as the world around them turns to chaos and they can only find goodness in the world through each other...

and then we reach paper rings where taylor pronounces her undying, unnerving love for him no matter what in the most happy, upbeat manner before we hit cornelia street where she illustrates the fears and doubts she’ll always have with a love and a feeling as strong as the one she has and that too often it all feels ‘too good to be true’ so she starts thinking about what would happen if that ‘paper rings’ kinda love just... disappeared forever and she left it all behind...

and then DBATC i guess kinda perfectly follows because it’s about the consequence of a breakup and how that is emotionally dealt with...

and then we hit my fave... LONDON BOY!!! and i guess it’s the PERFECT track 11 following DBATC because it describes everything GOOD about her love and the memories they’ve shared together in his hometown and it’s the most uplifting, happy and joyous song on the album in my opinion and it’s like the polar opposite of DBATC idk

and then track 12 idk.. kinda random placement again but it’s also i think nicely placed in the second half of the album because it’s like through alllll this she’s been through along the way... the thing and the person closest to her is at the forefront of it all and the horrible feeling never seems to leave her so i guess in between all the joyous, chaoticly wild moments, it’s always there with her.

and false god i think is then placed as track 13 because again as the album begins to close we just get more intimate, metaphorical illustrations about their love without all the background noise or chaos..

and then YNTCD as track 14 because the message she’s conveying has certainly become more prominent more recently to her and to society as a whole i think... and also she’s been living such a happy, healthy life as of late yet people STILL feel the need to rain on her parade so it being placed here is very relevant i think

and then afterglow as track 15 i think is perfectly placed as its all about taylor saying sorry for what she’s caused or how she’s acted and not her blaming other things/external sources.... it’s her saying “i’m so sorry” after all this time with her lover and everything that’s happened between and with them

ME! i think is towards the very end of the album because i think again through it all, taylor’s FINALLY realised that hey, why the f can’t I celebrate MYSELF and everything that’s good about me?! you should be lucky you’re with m! i’m an awesome person!! i’m great and i’m happy about that!!!

and INTHAF to me is a bit like i guess CIWYW in the sense that it’s a very soft, delicate yet illustrative story of the love she’s shared from the beginning of the relationship to the current stage she’s in and it’s very pure and soft and cute and childlike; it’s about the sacred moments they shared; the small, simple things that mean the most to her

and of course daylight ends the album with the most beautiful sentiment... step into the daylight, and let it go. it’s about the feeling you get when you see the colour of the sky after a huge storm.... it’s about loving life as it is now, in this very moment; it’s about realising that, you are what you love.
