Book Review: The Lodge by Sue Watson
Rating: 5/5 stars
The Lodge is a murder mystery set at a wintery lodge in the middle of a snowstorm. A family, including the new wife of a successful businessman and his ex-wife, gather together for their mother-in-law's birthday. When police show up at the door because they have discovered a hit-and-run (which is clearly no accident), everyone at the lodge falls under suspicion. Complicated family dynamics with children, exes, and a hired chef who isn't who she says she is, supercharge the atmosphere with anxiety and dread. When a member of the family at the lodge goes missing and everyone is required to stay there until the investigation is complete, true personalities come out of the woodwork, and the villain is more difficult to pin down than ever before.
This was so good! The Lodge was a slow burn, but instead of taking away from the story, it added to it and allowed plenty of time for good character development. The story is told from alternating POVs between the ex wife and the new wife. Each chapter had me bouncing back and forth saying, "THIS one is the villain… no…. THIS one!" The plot was well-woven and kept me guessing right up until the very end! I was terrified when I reached the epilogue, because there were still many questions left unanswered, but rest assured, they are all addressed by the end.
The Lodge is a heart-pounding read with an interesting cast of characters that will keep readers up late into the night! I highly recommend adding it to your TBR. The family drama, personal secrets, interconnected relationships, and nuanced ending gave me exactly what I wanted from the story. This is a book that you will want to read on a cold day curled up with a blanket and a warm drink. Thank you to the publishers at NetGalley and Bookouture for sending me an e-ARC!

“It doesnt say Anything About
presents in the Bible”
With the mother passing, Richard meets Grace. A woman who as a child was in a religious cult that caused her immense trauma. Mia and Aidan are Richards kids from the previous marriage and can't see how their father can be involved with another woman after the passing of his last wife suddenly. Richard decides to connect Grace with his kids, he invites Grace to the cabin with his children.
The amount of hidden meanings in this film is astronomical and (no spoilers) my mouth dropped open at the ending. It's hard nowadays to see original movies but this was one that actually didn't seem like a remake of another film. Very original idea and I loved the meanings behind everything. In my opinion this is a psychological horror rather than a drama/horror. Which is why I liked this so much more. This is one of my higher rated movies for the 31 days of halloween! Definitely one to spend this month on.
Director: Veronica Franz, Severin Fiala
Cinematography: Thimios Bakatakis
Tw: dead bodies, hurt animals, blood, children in peril, simulated suicide

I just realized that Craig Owens (James Cordon) probably has a better understanding and greater knowledge of the Doctor and his past than any other re-boot character (other than River Song of course).

The Lodger (1927)
Chronological order for the Top Twenty Hitchcock Films.
The Lodger, though not Hitch’s earliest foray into the silent era of filmmaking certainly showed his capability and style to maximum effect. Based on the Jack the Ripper murders of the Whitechapel section of 1888 London, this is an attention grabber from the first scene.
Dated? Yes. But let’s ignore that.
And as my study of Hitchcock unfolded, the brilliance and talent of the man presented itself early on. To NOT recognize The Lodger as Sir Alfred’s first expression of uniqueness is a mistake. Any viewing of it must look at the film with the eyes of an audience nearly 90 years ago.
Think about that when you see the lodger arrive at the front door of Marie Ault and Arthur Chesney for the first time. Or, when he is heard pacing maniacally above the living room of the house. An early process shot by Hitchcock replaced the floor with clear glass and the footsteps of the man can be seen clearly from below.
Ivor Novello as the face scarf obscured mystery man lends a chilling languor to the role and question of “Is he?”
June Tripp as a potential next victim is gloriously smitten with the lodger, perhaps to her ultimate demise.
Viewers of the closing scene may find some solace in the realization that enraged mob rule is certainly not a recent phenomenon.
Just an ongoing consequence of the dark side of human nature.
Next Up?

“Jake Thackray was a brilliantly witty wordsmith, specialising in poems-set-to-music insights of Yorkshire life that shine with both comedic hilarity and real-world pathos. Often bawdy, but never rude for the sake of it, he was called the “Northern Noel Coward” at the height of his success. And he was pretty successful, performing his satirical songs regularly on TV and radio, and even making it onto the Royal Variety Performance. . His style is more in the French chansonnier tradition than Coward; closer to Jacques Brel than other musical comedy greats such as Flanders and Swann or the American Tom Lehrer. But his subject matter is very British, or should I say rural Northern England. I first discovered him through his 1971 LP Live Performance, recorded at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, which is one of the records I inherited from my grandfather. This 2003 compilation captures 21 examples of Thackray’s greatest, released the year after he passed away. . I was familiar with songs like Lah-Di-Dah and ribald The Lodger from the live LP, but there are multiple gems here: The Blacksmith and the Toffee Maker is a wonderful love story, On again! On again! is laugh out loud funny, Old Molly Metcalfe is heart wrenching, and I love his explanation of the sheep-counting method of the Dales’ farmers: Yan Tan Tethera Methera Pip. Whereas The Widow of Bridlington is a character study his fellow Leeds-born Alan Bennett would be proud of...” . #jakethackray #yorkshiremusic #thelodger #lahdidah #oldmollymetcalfe #chanson #musicalcomedy #yantantethera #northernnoelcoward #recordcollection #nowplaying #nowlistening #randomrecordreview https://www.instagram.com/p/CCBEGS3ppzj/?igshid=n3t48zjbouj5
