She has also starred in the independent films Our Song (2000), The Dead Girl (2006), Mother and Child (2009), Night Catches Us (2010), and American Son (2019).

Time magazine included Washington in its Time 100 list of most influential people in 2014. In 2018, Forbes named her the eighth highest-paid television actress. Washington has won a Primetime Emmy Award and five NAACP Image Awards, including The President's Award.

The Last King of Scotland (2006)

Stories based on true events, particularly those based on tragedies are tricky business. How far do you want to deviate from the truth to deliver a tight and cohesive story? Should you pull back from what actually happened to make the absurd seem more logical? At the very least it's fair to combine characters to make it easier for us to keep track of everyone. There are no definitive rules. All that matters is whether the film is good or not. This brings us to The Last King of Scotland. I don’t know much about what truly transpired in Uganda in the '70s, but this film by Kevin Macdonald captures the madness and fear of those who were there.

Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy) is an irresponsible, rebellious young doctor searching for adventure in a Ugandan missionary clinic. When he catches the eye of General Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker, delivering a spectacular performance) he gets a glimpse at the man whose reign would see the wholesale slaughter of hundreds of thousands over a period of 8 years.

This film is not what you'd expect to see out of a story about the megalomaniacal General Idi Amin but that's for the better. For instance, our protagonist is not a particularly likable person. James McAvoy is well cast as a doctor who cares for others - that's his job - but is content to do only the minimum. Easily led astray by the women, luxuries, and gifts. As outsiders, we see how he could ignore all of the red flags raised by a dictator best described as a monster masquerading as a child masquerading as a man. Additionally, his character blemishes generate more tension. If he had been depicted as a pious hero who leans towards “the right thing” every time, you'd know how he'd react at every turn. Garrigan keeps you guessing. You pray he'll make the right choice. Eventually, he HAS to see what sort of madhouse the country has turned into. Right?

Forest Whitaker’s the reason to see this movie. On paper, there's no way you'd buy what we see the man do. You’d say such outlandish behavior would fit better in a comedy than a drama. You'd say it was an exaggeration to make a movie bad guy that would wring the emotions out of you when the music starts playing… if it wasn’t for Whitaker’s performance. He's so good at creating this charismatic leader, this angler fish. He lures you in suckered in by these appealing features and the next thing you know, you in, and by the time you see what's been hiding in those dark depths, it's too late. Best case scenario, you'll be left only mildly traumatized. At worst, you face a fate only a demon could've conceived.

Part of what makes The Last King of Scotland so effective, so upsetting, tense, and frightening is that you can't figure out what's coming next. Either the characters are so far off the deep end you could never imagine what makes them tick, or their moral compass is just askew enough for you to remain unsure of what fate has in store for them. It’s one of those instances where be thinking “this is so crazy it HAS to be true” and if someone says otherwise, you'd brush them off. Obviously, this isn't exactly how it went down but it feels real. (On DVD, June 18, 2015)
