Multimedia Journal: Film
I chose the film “12 Years A Slave” to analyze for my multimedia journal and its relationship with our course topics, readings, and screenings. “12 Years A Slave” is about a free black man in 1841 from New York, Solomon Northup, who is abducted, given the new name ‘Platt’, and sold into slavery. He is forced to adapt to slave life to stay alive, not telling anyone he is a free man or that he can read and write. He eventually confides in a Canadian white laborer and reveals his secret, asking the white laborer to send a letter to his friends; telling them of his situation and asking them to send his free papers to which the laborer agrees. A sheriff eventually shows up asking “Platt/Solomon” questions to confirm his identity. Thankfully, the sheriff takes control and takes Solomon with him. Returning him to his family after 12 years of being a slave.

Last week in class we read “To ‘the Land of Hope’: Blacks in the Urban North”. The reading discussed blacks from the South traveling to the North in hopes of freedom, work, and the hope of being treated like a real man and making a real earning. Solomon was a man who had moved to the North just like the men discussed in Takaki’s reading. He was considered a free man and yet, he was promised a job opportunity but instead was drugged, kidnapped, stripped of his identity, sold into slavery, and held captive for 12 years. His promise and sense of hope in the North was stripped away from him just as quickly as it was given.
Solomon was silenced and forced into slavery based on his racial identity. He is assumed not to be a free and not being able to read or write based on the racial identity he fit. His ethnic identity differed from the slaves. He did not know the songs and dances of the others yet based on his racial identity it was assumed he possessed the same characteristics as the other slaves. Like Takaki’s reading, the whites assumed that all black men were lazy workers, stealing their jobs and ruining their neighborhoods. These assumptions were made based off one’s racial identity.

Lynching’s and beatings were a public occurrence, creating a crowd just as discussed in the reading “The Shadow and the Substance”.

A black slave Patsy is sexualized and raped by her ‘owner’. Similar to the sexualization of black woman’s bodies in pop-culture today and as discussed in “Picturing Us: African American Identity in Photography.”

A white laborer joins the slaves to pay his debt, he is not given a beating like the others for picking the least amount of cotton that day. He is given a pass, words of encouragement, and Solomon gets beat instead just because the laborer was white and Solomon was black. He carried white privilege; just like the content discussed in the readings and screenings “The Angry Eye”, “White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack” and “On the Matter of Whiteness.”
