Favorite genre or sub genre of horror? (slashers, home invasion, body horror, gothic etc.)
Least favorite type of horror to write? Is there any you flat out refuse to?
List your top 5 favorite tropes.
𝐇𝐨𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐫 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐀𝐬𝐤𝐬 (But on a Tuesday) || accepting
{ OOC } My favorite genre has to be the demonic possessions in overly religious places. I don't know, there's something creepy about a place of holiness being corrupted by an entity so powerful that not even God could try to stop it. That's why I like The Nun movies so much and others like it !!
{ OOC } Nothing that I won't refuse to do, but I don't really like writing about werewolves or other mysterious creatures that aren't vampires. Mostly because I find it not as interesting. I do like non-human characters, but they have to have more depth for me to really get into it and sometimes it goes beyond horror.
{ OOC } Alright, I'm not very good at spotting tropes, but I'm gonna do my best. These might not be the proper names for them, but it's what I've seen in horror movies.
When the evil thing / killer comes back after the main characters think they've gotten rid of it. It's the "I always come back" thing that I love so much because I'm always on the side of evil xD
That one thing where the evil entity pretends to be very innocuous at first, but then ends up showing it's true colors slowly, but surely.
When the main characters make fun of horror movie characters, not knowing they, themselves, are those characters and usually end up making the same dumb choices. Bonus points if the one main character actually does the opposite and is the smart one for a change!
Just meta commentary about horror movies in general. I just love it xD
I can't think of a fifth one, but just horror movies having the balance of not taking themselves too seriously while also focusing on when to give the right scares!!

intro
Fear inducing stories have been told since the beginning of time and thus it is unsurprising that when we began to make movies, we turned our written horror stories into horror films. Horror films were made originally mostly about Dracula, Frankenstein, as well as Doctors Jekyll and Hyde. In the 70’s and 80’s there came a new insurgence of horror films that were mostly what would be considered “slashers”, which are just movies where the antagonist murders multiple people throughout the film.
youtube
There are many sub-genres of horror films and certain people may label them in different ways but there are paranormal and supernatural, slashers, folk horrors, psychological horrors, found footage, comedic, cosmic horrors, and many more. Each sub-genre has similar but different characteristics within them such as jump scares or isolation of the protagonists.
youtube
My focus is specifically on supernatural and paranormal horror films. When something is supernatural it cannot be explained . by science and defies the laws of nature. Similarly, the paranormal cannot, at this time, be explained by science and is not natural to this world. The slight difference here is just that some paranormal things could possibly one day be explained by science and supernatural most likely never will be. In films and literature, the supernatural and paranormal are sub-genres of horror in which many of the most popular movies of the past two decades have resided. These stories usually include things such as demons, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches, monsters, and pretty much any creature or presence that is not of scientific origin. There are also common themes used within these films such as religion, ancient burial grounds, possession, seances, and of course death.
There are many famous writers, directors, and filmmakers involved in the supernatural and paranormal films that we talk about as well as continue to view, today. Important to mention, I feel, is world renowned author Stephen King who wrote the stories that were utilized for the infamous films It, The Shining, and Carrie.
Jason Blum, being the creator of Blumhouse, also produced some of the important films of this time such as Paranormal Acitvity, Sinister, US, The Invisible Man, and Ouija. Who I think is most influential however is the genius, James Wan. James Wan’s films are the most of our time, including his combined work on Insidious and more personal work such as The Nun, Lights out. However, he also created two of the most truly world turning movies that paranormal film lovers have seen; Annabelle, and the most famous of all, The Conjuring.
Even in these wildly influential films, there are still tropes that can be found within such as skeptical fathers, possessed children (or children who speak to see the spirit), families moving into old haunted homes, objects shifting and falling, haunted dolls, and such. Yet, we do not tired of horror films regardless of the tropes because our fear that generates from the films comes from the addition of the sounds and effects that creates what we really fear the unknown, unseen, and incomprehensible.

For Athene Howard, the only child of renowned cultural anthropologist Charles Howard, life is an unexciting, disillusioned academic project. When she encounters a clairvoyant Dominican postulant, a stern nun, and a recusant English nobleman embarked on a quest for a feral Franciscan werewolf, the strange new world of enchantment and horror intoxicates and delights her—even as it brings to light her father’s complex past and his long-dormant relationship with the Church of Rome. Can Athene and her newfound compatriots battle against the ruthless forces of darkness that howl for the overthrow of civilization and the devouring of so many wounded souls? In this sister novel to A Bloody Habit, the incomparable Father Thomas Edmund Gilroy, O.P. returns to face occult demons, gypsy curses, possessed maidens, and tormented werewolves, accompanying a charming neo-pagan heroine in her earnest search for adventure and meaning.

Syzygy ?/? (Abandoned)
“What do you even know? You haven’t been paying attention to a single thing since you got here!”
“Oh, I most certainly have, Ms. Swan.” She paused, gesturing over to the occupied jail cell. “For instance, Captain Morgan over there just pretends to be drunk so you can arrest him. He’s generally a functioning member of society when not mooning over you like a love sick puppy.” She paused for a second, looking over at the other two men by the desk. “They all know, by the way. The whole town has a bet going. I think the blonde at the ice cream shop won.”
Deputy Goldilocks gaped at her, slack-jawed. Her coworkers tried not to snicker. Jones just leaned back against his bunk and shot her a somewhat sheepish smile when she turned to glare at him and the sheriff in turn. But Regina wasn’t finished.
“Oh, and I know all about your little stint in juvie, Ms. Swan. And not for that car that you stole. Sheriff, you might want to run a registration check on the Volkswagen. Being in possession of stolen property is a crime you know.”
“Now wait just a minute--”
“I’m not quite finished yet. Deputy Ken-doll over there cheated on his first wife with Miss Susie Sunshine. That’s the real reason they divorced--”
The man in question sputtered.
“--Tall, Dark, and Irish is into kinky dungeon sex,--”
The sheriff blushed bright red at this.
“--Dr. Strangelove’s got a Vicodin addiction, the librarian’s an alcoholic, your karate teacher friend has terrible taste in women and her online girlfriend who lives in Canada is actually just married, Wannabe Hells Angel is so secretive about his masterpiece because he writes dinosaur erotica for a living, that one mouthy janitor has a nun fetish, Granny’s lasagna is frozen, and also? There’s definitely no such thing as werewolves.”
Regina looked around the room of bemused, shocked, and mildly horrified townspeople. “Now, did I miss anyone, Ms. Swan?”

I was waiting to make sure no one pounced you, but apparently not.#3 and/or #42 of the kissing prompts for Dragatha. Whichever catches your fancy more
For once in my goddamn life, I am actually doing this.
It had been nearly a year since Agatha Van Helsing and Count Dracula had been found off the coast of Whitby. Agatha would not settle for only herself being brought to shore upon finding herself in the unfortunate category of undead. He had changed her and he would be staked for it. Or at least she had thought.
“Agatha, you’ve been gone an awfully long time. A husband will start to worry if his wife is gone too long, you know. I was starting to consider tacking up posters,” Dracula chides, half-pleased with himself and half curious as to her whereabouts. He had been waiting for her, just a little ways inside the door. A dog awaiting his mistress’s return.
She should have killed him by now but she was endlessly fascinated by him, even as her stomach turned uncomfortably as he claimed her as his wife. Only on paper, only because he made it so. Only because of his selfish, doggish actions was she now as he was, a vampire. A lifeless, bloodthirsty monstrosity. If not for the sake of containing him, she would have parted from him at the first opportunity. She would have turned to the nearest priest and asked to be staked; or she would have studied her own existence in death.
Agatha was able to watch him adapt, rather quickly, to a new environment and to new people. This process was no doubt hastened by his diet, secured by the blood of his victims, but fascinating nonetheless. She had taken note and eventually she dined on particular individuals that would grant her knowledge she could not obtain otherwise.
“Based on the smell of you, I’d say you had dinner without me,” he continues when she doesn’t entertain him with a response. His nose twitches as he closes the distance between them, never caring for her personal space, and frowns. “Inferior vintage. You should take better care of yourself.”
“Unsatisfied with your wife’s diet?” she snarks back, unflinching, her thick Dutch accent still perfectly in place despite all of the English blood running through her veins. He sees it as an act of defiance, holding to tradition in a new world. She sees it as a way to connect her to her human self, something to ground her to the morality she hypocritically holds close.
“Deeply,” he returns, decidedly ignoring her tone. Dracula leans in, sniffs at her neck with displeasure, and draws his head back, his frown growing sullen. “You do this intentionally.”
“Feed on the dying? Of course I do,” she says as she walks deeper into their home. She should call it what it is, a gaudy and oversized prison, but she has refrained for eleven months. The former nun can hold her tongue far longer than he ever could and she wasn’t about to entertain certain arguments.
She ignores the footfalls behind her, used to him following her around like a lost child, pestering her whenever he saw fit. Through the foyer, through the hall, crossing down a staircase and into the bowels of the near castle-sized home, they went. She wanted her study some place he could not enter, some place entirely hers. Once she found that she was impervious to the weaknesses he possessed, she used them to her advantage.
Down a dimly-lit hall and to a room with a cross affixed to the door, she hears him give a puff of breath and his shoes stop clicking against the stone floor.
“This? Again? Agatha, you’re stuck with me for all eternity and you’re going to spend that eternity pouting in your dismal little room?”
“Asks the man who sleeps in a box of dirt,” she shoots back as she opens the door, a line of Biblical pages lining the entryway. Agatha steps inside and turns to look at him. It reminds her of the convent a year prior and the knowledge that he cannot follow grants her mind some peace. “When was the last time you slept in a bed?”
She doesn’t wait for an answer and closes the door.
He irritates her beyond measure, beyond rationality, and yet she remains in his--their--home. Carfax Abbey was a quick fix, if only for his “talent” of suggestibility over others. Six months and they had a completely renovated property, complete with all his little secret passageways and hideaways. She had been impressed with his vision, though she would never admit it to him.
She reaches for a book she had recently picked up and takes residence on the small loveseat he bought for her on a whim. It could have been seen as a token of affection had it not been from him and an attempt for her to let him into the study.
The novel was a cryptozoological text on lycanthropy, werewolves, and the various mentions of them throughout history. She reads through it with idle interest, her annoyance ebbing as she turns each page, scribbling quick notes as she reads.
When she’s satisfied with her research, nearly two hours later, Agatha stands and stretches. It’s a purely human habit she hasn’t been able to rid herself of since turning. Not to mention, the more human behaviors she kept, the more he disapproves, and that is a win in her book.
The former nun blinks a few times and looks to the door behind her. It has been hours since she entered the room and she feels it safe enough to exit into the corridor. Safe enough from his prying eyes, his alluring presence, her weaknesses so human it sickens her. While he annoyed her beyond imagination, she can’t bring herself to part with him, if only to watch him. She keeps justifying her presence, her very existence, on keeping his destructive tendencies at bay. The Count can hardly keep himself in order but she has that power over him. Even if she needed a moment to herself every now and then, he would always bend to her whims.
When she opens the door, she’s greeted by him, sitting against the wall of the stone corridor. He’s staring emptily at the opposing wall, unmoving, unbreathing, until she appears in the doorway. Agatha nearly scoffs at his behaviors, a dog awaiting his mistress, a beast suddenly unable to survive on its own.
“Have you been waiting here the whole time?” she asks, her tone severe despite the warmth that unfurls within her. It’s not romantic, it’s stalking, she reminds herself. However, upon further inspection, she notices his change of clothes and lively hue of his skin.
“As a matter of fact,” he starts, standing and moving towards her. “I just returned and I want you to taste something.”
He’s too close now, just a breath away from her mouth and the scent of blood is heavy on his lips. Agatha can feel her teeth shape into fangs and knows her eyes are drenching in the crimson hue of bloodlust.
“And what would that be?” she provokes, unwavering despite the way her body sways towards his form. She damns herself, damns him, for the way her figure acts of its own accord, ignoring her mind’s wishes to steer clear of him.
“Fresh blood, Agatha. You need to remember what it tastes like. Maybe then, you’ll stop these preposterous little games of yours and submit to your nature. It’s what vampires are supposed to do. Feed on the living, accept the truth for what it is.”
He’s too close for her to answer now, his neck bent down to the point she can nearly taste the blood on his lips.
“Kiss me, dragă mea,” he breathes against her lips, a hand at her hips that she doesn’t care to move. She should hate him, should push him away. But she doesn’t. In fact, Agatha Van Helsing makes no such movement, despite her mind demanding repulsion.
In a moment, she makes her decision, hunger overtaking her higher functions, and she accepts his lips on hers, hungry as he claims her with a kiss. Her fangs scrape against his bottom lip as she sucks the last of the fresh blood from it and looks up at him after pulling away.
“Again.” A word that sounds more of a request than a demand, but she obliges him. She kisses him deeply, her hands coming to his cheek and disheveling the neatly organized locks atop his head. Dracula pulls her tighter against him and pushes her up against the stone wall.
The rocks are cool against her back, adding a contradictory sensation that conflicts with the heat of his mouth and hands as they travel her body. His mouth tastes of blood, surely, but there’s something else that she cannot place that compels her to deepen the kiss. Exploratory in execution, her tongue samples him, delving in and out, running against the slick of his own.
“What a naughty nun you are,” he purrs as he breaks the kiss, his lips traveling to her jaw. “Shall I punish you?”

DEMON, Polina Ogiy
DEMON-Evil spirits — the "fallen angels, servants of Satan, his messengers, the angels, the messengers of God. The gospel claim that sickness and brain fog occur as a result of the intervention of demons, because of their exile (often with the help of a stick) is depicted as a small black figures flying out of the mouth of the sufferer. They are depicted carrying away to Hell the soul of the sinner, as the angel carries the soul of the righteous to heaven. Or they fight with the angels for the possession of a human soul (ARS MORIENDI). Usually Satan represents paganism and demons can appear in scenes of conversion to Christianity or victory over the heathen. Have similarities with Satan (the wings, horns and tails), armed with a spear or a pitchfork. Cast them out by SV. Varfalomey SV. Zenon poverzheny at the feet of the SV. Norbert (his conversion to Christianity) SV. Geminiani (the expulsion of the spirits) SV. Catherine of Siena (overcome temptation). the attack of the demons of temptation SV. Anthony the Great is trying to tip the scale of SV. Michael's last judgment convicts pulled into Hell the last judgment the soul carry the unrepentant thief Crucified Christ being dragged soul to Hades Eurydice Orpheus whispers to Judas Iscariot blow out the candle the nuns of St. Genevieve as servants of Satan, kill children, job support in the air Simon the sorcerer SV. Peter the Apostle defeated the demons before Christ's Descent into Hell in front of the preacher (they were hunted angels) Ignatius of Loyola depart from the ship in a storm SV. Mark (cast them out three saints). Classification of demons the Origin of Demons are fallen angels: this is the official teaching of the Christian Church. I think the story of the rebellion of the angels are familiar to everyone - hints of it are in the Bible, appealing to her Christian thinkers, a brilliant literary description of Anglomania is given in j.Milton. I remind you this story briefly. Light one of God's angels named Lucifer ("light-bearer") became proud of their power and intend to take the throne of the Lord. He raised rebellion in heaven and took a third of the angelic hosts. Against the rebels was made by the Archangel Michael with the faithful God of the heavenly armies. In the resulting battle the rebellious angels led by Lucifer (Satan) were cast out of heaven into hell and became demons, whose only aim now is to sow evil. This story has many interpretations, but here we present just a completely original version of the origin of demons, is fundamentally different from the Orthodox: 1. In the middle ages there was a view that demons were originally created by God to commit evil. Advocates of this idea was based on a quote from Isaiah, where God says: "I create the waster to destroy" (54, 16). In rabbinical treatises States that Satan was created on the sixth day of creation at the same time with eve; evil spirits were created "between the suns", that is, between dusk and dawn on the eve of the first Sabbath, when God created their souls, already dawn approached Saturday, and he had no time to create bodies for them. 2. In the heretical doctrine bogomilov, as well as in folk beliefs, not get rid of pagan dualism, Satan (Satanael) is not God's creation, and the independent opposing God figure, much like the Persian Ahriman. Both forces, good and evil, participate in the process of creation of the world; in contrast to God's angels, Satan creates his demonic army, striking his staff on the flint. 3. The apocryphal Book of Enoch recounts the history of the cohabitation of the "sons of God" (angels) with the "daughters of men". The angels exchanged out of lust the Kingdom of heaven on earthly Vale, were cursed by God and became demons. This theory in the middle ages was shared by many Church authorities (eg. Thomas Aquinas). 4. In the same Book of Enoch says that marriages of fallen angels with earthly women was a tribe of monstrous giants. When God destroyed the giants, from their bodies came forth the evil spirits. 5. The ancient Hebrews believed that many evil spirits were born from the intercourse of Adam with female spirits (or eve mens perfume) within those one hundred and thirty years that Adam and eve were separated after the fall. Many demons birthed from Adam and his first wife — Lilith, later she turned into a demon. 6. In demons of three types — Shedim, Rukhin and Lilin — was turned into the part of the people, scattered after the failed construction of the tower of Babel 7. Finally, according to later popular belief, the armies of hell continually replenished by souls of great sinners; children of the damned parents, and offspring of Incubus and succubi. However, all the demons of the lowest discharge, as various vampires, ghosts and werewolves, also make up the army of Satan. The number that the demons there are a great many, no doubt. However, since the first centuries of Christianity, theologians and demonologists with remarkable tenacity practice math, trying to calculate the exact number of infernal spirits. Maxim of tyre in the 2nd century calls the very modest figure of 30,000, but subsequent centuries have inflated the part of the devil's troops to incredible limits. Alphonse de Spina in 1459, on the grounds that from God have disappeared exactly one third of the heavenly host, called the number of demons 133 306 608. In the 16th century, a researcher, taking as a basis the biblical number of the beast", it counted 66 infernal princes, commanders of 6 660 000 devils. Johann Weir, the famous disciple of Agrippa, claimed that in hell live 7 405 926 demons, managed 72 princes. The demons form 1111 6666 units for each. All surpassed the Lutheran theologians, who called a fantastic figure— 2 665 866 746 664 demon.Greek. Daimon In Greek mythology, a generalized notion of some vague and unformed divine power, evil or (sometimes) beneficent, often determines the life the fate of man. This instantly arising and instantly leaving a terrible and fatal force that can be called by the name with which you cannot engage in any communication. Suddenly maglinov, he immediately produces an action and then disappears. In this way, obvious vestiges of the so-called sudden pianism (in the terminology of G. Usener, Doctor - not that other, as "God of this moment"). Sometimes the Olympic gods, too, are called on, but only in generalized or indefinite sense in the case when God has not shown himself individually and hides your name. D. acts directly on the person preparing trouble (Hom. Od. 295 XII), tempted (XVI 194), sends trouble (XIX 512), ominous dreams (XX 87). D. directs man to the path leading to any of the events, often catastrophic (Hom. Od. VI, 172; VII, 248; Il. XXI 92). D. suddenly causes a particular idea (Hom. II. IX 600; Od. III 27). Sometimes beneficent acts. D. (Od. IX, 381), found the epithet olbiodaimon, "schastlivenko". D. is equal to destiny, all the events of human life are under his influence (Aeschyl. Pers. 825; Soph. frg. 592; Eur. Andr. 971). There is D. of birth (Pind. Ol. XIII 105), D. of good and evil (Pind. Pyth. III 34), human nature - its On (Heraclit. frg. 119), each person in life gets your D. (Plat. Phaed. 107 (d). Demons are thought of also inferior deities, intermediaries between gods and men. In Hesiod's generation of the "Golden age" after his disappearance turned into a "blissful." that guard people and look to the right and wrong of the case (Hes. Orr. 121-126). In Roman mythology D. corresponds to a genius. Early Christian ideas about D. are associated with the demonic image of evil, demonic forces (see Demons). Lit.: Losev A. F., classical mythology in its historical development, Moscow, 1957, p. 46-60; Horst P. C. van, Daimon, "Mnemosyne", ser. 3, 10, 1940, pp. 61-68; H. Nowak, Zur Entwicklungsgeschichte des Begriffes Daimon, Bonn, I960. A. F. Losev In the descriptions of the mythologies of various peoples. D. - the symbol of those supernatural characters who are not gods and occupy in comparison with the gods of the lower place in the hierarchy (or are at lower levels in this mythological system). In a more narrow and precise meaning. D. and evil spirits. According to the classification proposed by Uthenera and supported by E. Cassirer, we must distinguish between (spirit) as a symbol of random mythological image that is generated from any object within the field of action of mythological thought, and genius as a symbol of the mythological symbol of the destiny and personality of man.

Annabelle comes home (2019) review
After a disappointing first movie and an ok second, we finally reach the third Annabelle spin-off of the Conjuring universe. Let's see the results of Gary Dauberman's efforts. It begun with an impressive marketing that hyped the audience for a battle between the Warrens and their daughter versus the demonic doll who this time possesses the entire Warren's cabinet of curiosities. As it turns out, the fan favourite couple appears for merely a promising (albeit enjoyable) cameo. The main characters are their daughter, Judy, her babysitter and her best friend, respectively played by the great upcoming actresses Mc Keena Grace, Madison Iseman and Katie Sarife. This isn't necessary a bad thing, since the movie decides to not use the couple in a deus ex machina way. Despite the fact that the main characters fell a bit flat, the actresses manage to make them interesting. The movie is extremely imaginative, especially in the set design of the room and the new ghosts/demons that appear (The samurai and Ferryman practically beg for their own spin-off, while the use of the hellhounds is a clever meta reference to the fan theory that Conjuring 3 will be about werewolves). It's interesting that despite most of the spin-offs of the franchise that culminate in a jump scare festival, this one chooses to be a slow burn, that has the necessary crowd exciting scenes, but doesn't overdo it. It's a thrilling horror, that will be mainly enjoyed by fans of James Wan's Conjuring universe, since it heavily references the other movies (although I would love a Nun reference in one of the paintings in the Warren's atelier).

ANGELIC POWERS:
angelic energy manipulation: all angels can create, shape, and manipulate the angelic energy that they give off naturally. briar’s angelic energy is extremely bright and glittering.
superhuman strength: briar’s physical strength not only surpasses that of humans, but also demons, vampires, werewolves, ect. she has extreme control over his strength, and the amount he emits depends on how much angelic power she puts behind it.
superhuman speed: the same as above, briar’s speed surpasses all supernatural creatures. briar hasn’t tested it, but it’s said an angel can travel around the earth seven and a half times in one second.
superhuman stamina: briar rarely, if ever, becomes tired or gets hungry or thirsty. she likes to lay down and watch vienna sleep, and she eats when everyone else does, but, besides that, she only sleeps or consumes food and drink when she needs to refuel.
superhuman agility: briar is able to move with flawless grace and dexterity and balance, her reflexes are sharper than any other creature, and he can jump higher and leap longer than any other creature can, as well.
superhuman senses: briar’s senses are sharper than any other creature, she can hear a pin drop from miles away, and smell a burning house from a different city, for example. her senses are even sharper than gabriel’s, as she’s a full angel, and she can hear what’s being said in a construction zone in paris --- barely exaggerating.
supernatural perception: briar can see the supernatural things around him that most others cannot, like ghosts and reapers, and certain monsters and demons that are invisible to all but angels, fallen or otherwise. briar is able to see past the vessel of a demon, to its real visage, and she also sees vampire’s true faces when he first looks at them. briar is able to tell if a person is a supernatural creature and what they are from one glance, or sometimes, one sniff --- werewolves give off a strong scent.
telekinesis: briar can manipulate objects / matter using only his mind.
teleportation: this is called “orbing” by angels, and it is the ability to teleport from one place to another in the blink of an eye. when briar orbs, she disappears into glittering, bright, white light, and you can hear her wings fluttering.
telepathy: briar can communicate with others using only her mind, through thoughts. this is how angels communicate in heaven, they rarely ever speak out loud. this is more often than not how briar and gabriel communicate, falling back into old habits from before he fell.
hypnotism: briar is able to affect or directly influence other people's minds, forcing them to do as she commands. briar’s ability to use this power depends on the mental strength of her target, like, for example, she was unable to hypnotize viviana, a thousand year old vampire, even though she was able to possess her. but she could easily hypnotize a human or a weaker vampire. she cannot hypnotize other angels, except for fallen angels. she has yet to try this power out on gabriel because he won’t let her.
mental manipulation: briar can manipulate, modify and control the thoughts, mindsets, and upper brain functions, allowing the ability to render others unconscious, suppress their memories, and negate the use of abilities, increase / decrease mental capacity, modify minds to be agreeable, control minds, sway sensations to induce altered perception, bestow / heal mental disorders, create / penetrate mental barriers, etc.
memory manipulation: briar is able to erase, restore, alter, and fabricate memories in the minds of humans, along with weak supernatural creatures.
precognition: while not all angels are given the gift of seeing the future, the job briar had in heaven required her to have such powers, and she kept it when she went to earth. so, briar has the ability to foresee possible futures and observe what may happen. since the future is not set in stone, briar’s vision may change based on the choice of herself and others. but she has learned to remain a silent bystander when it comes to future predictions.
retrocognition: briar has the ability to discern the past and past events using various means, usually entering a trance while seeing and hearing a noted past event. while this ability usually comes to her spontaneously when she needs to know an important fact about a person or event, briar can also summon this power to a specific person.
dream manipulation: briar has the ability to enter anyone’s dream. she can also manipulate and change their dreams, controlling them and making the person see as she wishes. briar can also heal a person’s dream, curing them from present and future nightmares. she offered this to viviana when she learned she suffered from chronic nightmares, but viviana declined.
mediumship: as a full angel, briar can communicate with anyone who has died, so long as their soul has not ended up in hell. if she needs to speak with someone who’s been dead for a while, and has passed on, she must travel to their heaven. she can also see the ghosts of those who haven’t passed on, and she can help them pass on, if they’re ready.
self - healing: if briar is injured, the wound heals instantly, and she doesn’t feel it at all. but it is extremely difficult to hurt an angel, almost impossible to make them bleed. not even vampire fangs can penetrate the skin of a full angel like briar.
healing: briar can heal the wounded by siphoning some of her angelic energy, which is what keeps her strong and invulnerable, into the injured person. the injury will heal instantly.
resurrection: when god allows it, briar can resurrect those who’ve just died the same way she would heal them. but only if it is gods will for them to live.
protective charm: briar can protect those she choses from any physical harm, by placing a protective cloak around their bodies. god, along with the archangels, can, however, decide to take the protective charm away for any reason at any moment.
soul - channelling: when she is weak, briar can channel the energy from other’s souls to restore her own strength. if she channels from the soul of a supernatural such as a vampire, briar’s powers will be super - charged for a day or two.
soul - reading: by reaching into a person’s soul, briar can read their soul, and see their entire life played out before him. it also gives her a look at the person’s personality, their weaknesses and strengths, and then therefore predict how they’ll react in any situation, giving her the upper hand. note: this may severally injure the person, or even paralyze them.
mind - walking: with one hand placed on the person’s head, briar can enter their mind, and she can also see their life played out this way. but usually, the way mind walking works, is the person who’s mind she’s reaching into guides her through their memories to the place where, for whatever reason, she needs to be. note: as above, this may severally injure the person whose mind he walks, and it may leave them in a catatonic state, permanently locking them inside their own mind like a prison.
sedation: with a single touch, briar can render any creature, besides a god or a more powerful angel, unconscious, and only she can bring them out of it again.
empathy: briar feels all the emotions that the people around him are experiencing, she can even pick out who is feeling what without having to see them. se can also influence the emotions of others, be it human or supernatural, changing them. briar only uses this power to make people feel happier when they’re upset or mad because she hates to see people, the ones she loves or just someone she passes on the street, feeling sad.
weather manipulation: briar can control the weather, changing it to her will. she does not have global control as an archangel would, but she can control the weather on a much wider scale than gabriel can. she can change the weather of an entire country, or, if powered up enough, a whole continent.
immortality: though he can be hurt and weakened, briar will never die or grow old. she has existed since the beginning of time, but was born, created after the archangels, which her mother is one of.
light manipulation: briar can create and manipulate light, and even the suns rays.
light energy manipulation: briar create and manipulate light energy, which is pulled from either light dimensions, her own angelic energy, or the light energy that those who are blessed, and also those devoted to god, such as preachers and nuns, give off naturally. if drawn from herself or a blessed one, it greatly depletes their strength, but it is also harder to pull it from another dimension. while light energy manipulation can be used offensively, it is usually used as a gift, by blessing someone with knowledge or creativity, or helping someone grow and become who they’re meant to be.
ray / beam manipulation: briar can create and manipulate different rays and beams, such as, sunlight, plasma, ultraviolet, normal light, x-rays, cosmic rays, gamma rays, laser, electric, magnetic, pure energy, infrared, etc.
energy balls: briar is able to create balls of pure energy, either by using her angelic energy or her light energy manipulation, and they are used to attack an enemy.
aurora manipulation: briar can manipulate, create, and shape auroras. auroras to briar is like energy to gabriel, though she can manipulate energy, too, but not like auroras.
SEE BELOW TO READ MORE ABOUT BRIAR’S CONTROL OVER AURORAS!
omnilingual: briar, like all angels can speak and understand all languages, even ancient and dead ones. she is even able to communicate in the language of different animals, from fish to horses to dogs to birds.
wildlife friendship: briar has a special connection with any and all animals. not only can she speak to them, but she can control and manipulate them to do as she wishes, and she has a mental link with all animals, giving her animal empathy. if injured or low powered, all the animals from the surrounding areas will surround briar to protect her until she is healed.
shapeshifting: briar can change her form, either making her appear as a completely different person, or turn into an animal. she enjoys transforming into a large cat, like the ones viviana keeps as pets, or a blue bird so she can fly with her spirit guardian, who is a butterfly.
possession: briar can take possession of the body of a human for however long she pleases. she can also possess supernatural creatures, but for how long depends on how mentally strong the creature is. she is able to possess the supernatural for much longer than gabriel can, seeing as she’s at full strength. as a test, she lasted for nearly four hours in control of viviana, while gabriel is unable to possess her for more than five minutes.
astral projection: briar can separate her spirit from her body by entering a trance, gaining access to multiple planes of existence or “dimensions.” briar is strong enough to control both her astral and corporeal presences. archangels have the ability to be in multiple planes at once with control over every presence.
elemental manipulation: briar has limited control over all the elements, but has complete control over her specialized element, which is ice.
reality warping: briar is a powerful enough angel to bend reality to her will. the more powerful the angel, the greater their capability. briar can only warp reality on a small scale.
conjuring: briar has the ability to summon any form of creatures, items, spirits, demons, deities or elements. depending on how big or strong the thing or creature is that she’s conjuring, this may severely drain her of power, and even may need two angels to be done. if, for example, they were trying to summon a god.
localization: at any moment, briar knows the exact location of any humans ( or supernatural creatures ). briar only really uses this power on those she’s claimed as her own. this power cannot be used on other angels, as when briar first got to earth, she could not immediately locate gabriel using this power, and had to find him on foot.
smiting: perhaps an angel's most versatile and terrifying weapon, smiting allows briar to kill almost any demon, monster and even humans with a single touch.
wings: briarr’s wings are made physical by summoning angelic energy to form them, and she can summon them whenever he wishes. briar’s wings are shining white and the ends of her feathers look like they’ve been dipped in glittering gold. each wing is about six feet long.
winged flight: when releasing her wings, briar is able to use them to fly like a bird does. she can fly at incredible speeds, go from one end of the earth to the other in the blink of an eye.
angelic form: if anyone that is not an angel or doesn’t have angel blood, they would turn to ash upon looking at briar’s angelic form, as it is made of pure light and angelic energy.
BRIAR CAN MANIPULATE AURORAS TO DO MANY DIFFERENT THINGS, LIKE: NOTE: IF YOU BE PURE OF HEART, A BLESSED ONE, BRIAR’S AURORA ATTACKS WON’T WORK ON YOU UNLESS SHE SINGLES IN ON YOU WITH THE SPECIFIC INTENT TO CAUSE HARM. NOTE: INTENT IS WHAT’S IMPORTANT WITH BRIAR’S AURORA POWERS. IF SHE RELEASES AN AURORA BALL WITH THE INTENT TO HURT, IT WILL HURT. IF SHE RELEASES AN AURORA WAVE WITH THE INTENT TO HEAL, IT WILL HEAL THE LAND, LIVEN UP THE NATURE, AND WHOEVER HAS BEEN TOUCHED BY IT, THEIR HEART WILL BE LIGHT AND FILLED WITH JOY.
aurora ball projection: create and launch a ball of aurora offensively
aurora beam emission: releases a beam of aurora.
aurora blast: a total, powerful release of aurora over the area surrounding briar.
aurora bolt projections: releases a low powered lightning bolt - shaped mass of aurora.
aurora bomb generation: creates a bomb of aurora, which briar can set off whenever she chooses. like i stated above, the intent behind the aurora bomb is what matters. if she releases it with the intent to cause damage, it can level an entire city, depending on the angelic energy she puts behind it. an example of releasing the bomb under a good intention is if briar’s come across a patch of dead forest. she can release a aurora bomb, and it will heal the plants and trees, bringing them to their ultimatum health, and return the wildlife.
aurora breath: discharges blasts of aurora from the mouth.
aurora bullet projection: releases bullet - like forms of aurora in a fast succession, like an automatic gun firing.
aurora cutting: using aurora to cut opponents.
aurora infusion: empower and energize anything using aurora.
aurora vision: emit aurora beams from the eyes.
aurora vortex creation: creates a giant tornado of aurora for offensives or defensives purposes, and is extremely draining and cannot be kept up for long.
aurora wave emission: like aurora blast, aurora emission releases a wave of aurora, but only concentrated one way, acting like a wave, knocking back and down everything it hits.
aurora bolts, expanding: project aurora that expands rapidly on contact with an object.
aurora blast, formulated: release blasts of aurora in a form of a creature or object. briar is fond of releases positive aurora blasts in the shape of hearts, to lift people’s spirits and because she’s the cutest cute to ever cute.
aurora hand blasts: release aurora blasts through ones hands.
aurora hidden attack: channels the attack through anyone with the powers of a medium, like an actual medium, or another angel, or certain witches.
aurora missile generation: creates aurora missiles.
aurora waves, omnidirectional: sends out a wave of aurora in all directions.
aurora reflective attack: release attacks of aurora that can bounce off of any surface.
aurora scatter shot: release aurora blasts that splits into multiple fragments.
aurora sword beam: releases aurora blasts from swords and other such bladed weapons.
aurora shield: creates a shield made of reflective aurora that can be used offensively or defensively. offensively because of its sharp edges, and the blinding light it gives off.
WEAKNESSES: NOTE: ONLY OTHER ANGELS ( OR A GOD ) CAN HARM / KILL AN ANGEL
hellfire: fire from the pits of hell can severely harm briar.
heaven fire: as hellfire, the fire born at the heart of heaven can severely harm briar.
hell - forged demon blades: the blades given to all demons, forged in the fires of hell, can harm any being, even an angel like briar.
magic: a powerful enough witch, like elizabeth, for example, can freeze briar, rendering her unable to move or speak or use any of his powers to defend herself.
azazel’s blade / death’s blade: the only weapon known that can truly kill an angel.
a reaper’s scythe: blessed by azazel, the angel of death herself, all reaper’s scythes can do some serious damage to any angel.
weapons blessed by god: if god blesses a weapon, like azazel’s blade, it also gains the ability to kill an angel, but these weapons are hidden away by the archangels and hard for a regular person to come by. it normally has to be given to you, like an axe that was blessed by god was given to briar and gabriel’s elder sister, freya so that she may kill gabriel, permanently.
#* about. ❪ briar sharp. ❫#LOOK AT HOW POWERFUL MY SWEET LIL BRIAR IS#I LOVE HER SO MUCH#EVERYONE THINKS GABRIEL'S THE STRONGEST CAUSE HE WAS IN LINE TO BE AN ARCHANGEL#BUT NOOOO#IT'S BRIAR#SHE'S THE STRONGEST SHARP SIBLING#and i love her for it

Gothic literature definition
Best known is the southern version, set not in cathedrals, castles and moors, but amidst the decrepit plantations and enduring ruin of the Civil War. Cross the line into horror and you leave the gloom of Manderley and Wuthering Heights for the hallucinogenic terror of The Castle of Otranto, Dracula’s Transylvania or Doctor Jekyll’s lab.Īmerican fiction has its own Gothic tradition. Add some menacing weather, a tortured anti-hero and a long-buried secret or two and you’ve got the makings of a fine old Gothic novel in the tradition of Jane Eyre or The Hunchback of Notre Dame, big, chewy tales that roll right up to the precipice of horror but stop just short, lingering instead in the realm of Europe’s Dark Romanticism. Gothic and The Woman in Black ‘Susan Hill effectively evokes the voice of Dickens and other writers using characteristic devices such as densely detailed text, evocative descriptions and language that is lavish and dense as any Victorian tale.Darkness. Gothic and The Woman in Black ‘The Woman in Black’ is a pastiche of the Victorian Gothic style of literature and is written in a very similar style to Dickens’ novels. Vocabulary of the Gothic Write a list of at least 20 words that you think would be a part of ‘the vocabulary of the gothic’. Gothic Horror – A Checklist 10 Characters that seem to possess some sort of psychic communication 11 Communication between the living and the dead / The possibility of life after death (immortality) 12 Language of the Gothic Gothic Horror – A Checklist 6 High, even exaggerated, emotions 7 Women in distress 8 Sense of indefiniteness nothing is exactly explained or described 9 A being that can’t function in the ‘normal’ world properly The Supernatural / creation of a ghostly, eerie atmosphere 5. Desolate and remote environments - sense of remoteness in character’s situation and mind 4. Suspense and Tension Events build up feelings of suspense and tension in the reader so that when awful events happen it is either: expected a relief or worse because of the wait. Stock Characters The stock characters of Gothic fiction include tyrants, villains, bandits, maniacs, heroes, persecuted maidens, femmes fatales, monks, nuns, madwomen, magicians, vampires, werewolves, monsters, demons, dragons, angels, fallen angels, ghosts, walking skeletons and the Devil himself. Mood There is often a fear of imprisonment, strong emotions, desire for self-expression and freedom. Ghosts, haunted houses and Gothic architecture, castles, darkness, death, decay, doubles, madness, secrets, and hereditary curses. The atmosphere is often claustrophobic and sinister, with turbulent or gloomy weather (pathetic fallacy). Settings Wild and remote, with old castles, gloomy dungeons, monasteries or dark, inhospitable houses. This idea continues in modern horror films with ‘Don’t go down into the cellar’ a clear indication that something dreadful will happen! Some famous examples are ‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker and ‘Frankenstein’ by Mary Shelley.Ĭourage of Main Protagonist The main protagonist or character is courageous and enters the haunted or supernatural building despite warnings. Gothic Fiction Usually contains elements of horror and romance. Gothicism's origin is attributed to English author Horace Walpole, with his 1764 novel The Castle of Otranto, subtitled ‘A Gothic Story’ Gothicism's."- Presentation transcript:ĭefinition Gothic fiction is a genre or mode of literature that combines elements of both horror and romance. 📼, 👻
📼: fave type of horror? (thrillers, creature features, etc.)
my Horror Jam is definitely supernatural horror -- ghost, possessions, haunted houses like hell yeah that’s the shit i’m here for. i’ve had a fascination with ghosts ever since i was a kid and read all of the ghost books in the back of my library and that’s translated neatly over to being a proper horror fan. creature features are cool too tho and i can definitely get into a good slasher movie even if blood and gore isn’t typically my thing.
honestly as long as i have some interesting characters/commentary/story to get into, i’m down. but ghosts are definitely my preference.
👻: if you made a horror movie, what would be the plot?
tbh the first thing that’s springing to mind is a rehash of the nun wherein we axe this whole convent thing entirely and make it a prequel to the conjuring franchise feat young lorraine (and maybe young ed too, but we could also make the crooked man about him and then a third prequel where they’re brought together) squaring off against valak BUT
if we’re going for something original..............hmmm. i’d love to make a good werewolf movie? we don’t have enough of those or at least not enough mainstream ones. i’d love to see something about...mmm not necessarily warring werewolf packs bc that’s been done to death but something where the protags are werewolves and we get a peek into their culture and such -- although if we could PLEASE do it right and not delve into the typical gross and inaccurate alpha male bs that’d be great

Toys could come alive, and wanted freedom to be, but mainly they just wanted to be with loving kids. We fought, and I killed a few. After understanding them, and realizing they just wanted to be loved, I befriended them, and reunited with mine. After everything was said and done, my old friend turned bully, who was trying to help the toys in their rebellion rekindled with me, for some reason he ended up being homeless and moved in with me and family, we fought once more and kissed and lived in love with my toys and each other. My toys lived in the basement floorboards, like the borrowers, and every night and morning I’d knock on them to let them know I still loved them.

If somebody attempted to do an actual power ranking of all the most popular supernatural creatures, well, that would be stupid, because obviously witches would win. They can do literal magic, and even if the calculations weren’t in their favor they could just like, put a spell on the person doing the math.
But unfortunately, there is no actual way to “do the math” on supernatural beings, because they are not real. What we can do, however, is attempt to determine how much power each of them wield in our cultural consciousness.
To do so, I calculated how much money every major movie about Halloween-y creatures made between 1999 and the present. Why 1999? First of all, it’s almost exactly 20 years ago, which means that it encompasses nearly an entire generation’s worth of taste in film. It also has the benefit of freeing me from comparing the cultural importance of the films from Universal’s genre-defining Classic Monsters era (the original Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolf Man, et al) with, say, Nicolas Cage’s witch movie from 2011.
There is also the fact that 1999 happened to be a pretty major year for movies and franchises involving otherworldly beings. The Mummy, The Blair Witch Project, and The Sixth Sense all premiered that year, providing major wins for mummies, witches, and ghosts, respectively.
So without further ado, here’s each of the most popular supernatural creatures, ranked by how much money the movies about them made. An important asterisk here is that films in which multiple kinds of beings play major roles will not be included, which is why you won’t find Harry Potter, Hotel Transylvania, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Dark Shadows, and the like. (Plus, those are relatively lighthearted anyway, and it’s Halloween!) Another important asterisk is that the differences between categories, like ghosts and demons, can sometimes be nebulous, and so if you are particularly riled up about any of these categorizations, please remind yourself that, once again, it’s Halloween.
The following numbers are comprised of a film’s domestic gross only, are not adjusted for inflation, and were pulled from the IMDB-owned Box Office Mojo.
A still from Benicio Del Toro’s 2010 film The Wolfman. IMDB
Poor werewolves. In 20 years, there were only three major movies that featured werewolves prominently, and none of them really made all that much money. And even though Twilight technically stars a shape-shifting werewolf-like teenager, let’s be honest: It’s a vampire movie.
The Wolfman (2010): $61,979,680
Red Riding Hood (2011): $37,662,160
Cursed (2005): $19,297,522
Total: $118,939,362
The mummy in The Mummy. Universal Pictures/IMDB
The Mummy franchise is doing literally all the work here, although a special shoutout to Tom Cruise’s 2017 remake, whose domestic flop Vanity Fair attributes to Cruise’s “vise grip” of control.
The Mummy Returns (2001): $202,019,785
The Mummy (1999): $155,385,488
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008): $102,491,776
The Mummy (2017): $80,227,895
Total: $540,124,944
A still from 2016’s The Love Witch. IMDB
Had we included the Harry Potter franchise here, which at a domestic gross of $2,391,805,822 easily eclipses every other category all by itself, witches would have made it out on top. But despite the fact that they’re easily the coolest of the bunch, the other witch-centric movies of the last generation didn’t quite make the magic happen.
Oz the Great and Powerful (2013): $234,911,825
The Blair Witch Project franchise (1999- 2016): $187,753,254
The Conjuring (2013): $137,400,141
Into the Woods (2014): $128,002,372
Bewitched (2005): $63,313,159
Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters (2013): $55,703,475
The Last Witch Hunter (2015): $27,367,660
The Witch (2015): $25,138,705
Season of the Witch (2011): $24,827,228
The Covenant (2006): $23,380,495
The Love Witch (2016): $228,894
Total: $908,027,208
A still from Zombieland. Columbia/Tristar/IMDB
I’ll be honest, I’m a little shocked zombies didn’t do better here. Even after their mid-2000s heyday, zombie movies just kept respawning well into the 2010s. As the BBC argues, their popularity tends to spike in uncertain times: “Zombies embody the great contemporary fear − and, for some people, the great contemporary fantasy − that we’ll soon be surrounded by ravenous strangers, with only a shotgun to defend ourselves. Compared to that, facing a werewolf or a vampire is a breeze.”
Resident Evil franchise (2002-2017): $271,274,006
I Am Legend (2007): $256,393,010
World War Z (2013): $202,359,711
Zombieland (2009): $75,590,286
Warm Bodies (2013): $66,380,662
Dawn of the Dead (2004): $59,020,957
28 Days Later (2002): $45,064,915
28 Weeks Later (2007): $28,638,916
Shaun of the Dead (2004): 13,542,874
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies (2017): $10,938,134
Total: $1,029,203,471
In The Ring, Samara’s ghost crawls out of a TV.
The fun thing about ghost movies is that there’s a zillion different ways to do them — which is also likely why there’s simply been so many of them. But the one thing that unites them is that one point or another, somebody in the movie has probably had the thought, “I see dead people.” Here, a “ghost” is defined as the spirit of a specific dead person, which separates it from that of a demon.
The Sixth Sense (1999): $293,506,292
The Ring (2002): $233,152,400
What Lies Beneath (2000): $155,464,351
Ghostbusters (2016) : $128,350,574
The Grudge (2004): $110,359,362
The Others (2001): $96,522,687
Gothika (2003): $59,694,580
Thirteen Ghosts (2001): $41,867,960
House on Haunted Hill (1999): $40,846,082
Ghost Ship (2002): $30,113,491
Shutter (2008): $25,928,550
Dark Water (2005): $25,473,352
Pulse (2006): $20,264,436
Total: $1,261,544,117
A still from 2018’s The Nun. Warner Bros./IMDB
There can be some blurriness between what constitutes a demon versus a ghost, but in most cases, a demon is capable of possessing humans, can usually shape-shift, and often come alongside some religious connotations. Films involving the devil are also included in this category.
Paranormal Activity franchise (2009-2015): $401,363,355
Insidious franchise (2010-2018): $257,374,845
The Nun (2018): $116,745,963
This Is the End (2013): $101,470,202
Constantine (2005): $75,976,178
The Exorcism of Emily Rose (2005): $75,072,454
The Amityville Horror (2005): $65,233,369
The Devil Inside (2012): $53,261,944
Ouija (2014): $50,856,010

Jennifer’s Body (2009): $16,204,793
The Babadook (2014): $964,413
Total: $1,614,310,350
A still from Twilight. IMDB
To literally nobody’s surprise, vampires have made the most money at US box offices over the past 20 years. This is, of course, solely due to the popularity of Twilight, the YA saga responsible for thousands of sexual awakenings of both its target tween readership and the adult fans of its unauthorized NSFW spinoff, 50 Shades of Grey.
Twilight franchise (2008-2012): $1,365,922,346
Underworld franchise (2003-2016): $252,766,892
Van Helsing (2004): $120,177,084
Blade II (2002): $82,348,319
Blade Trinity (2004): $52,411,906
30 Days of Night (2007): $39,568,996
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012): $37,519,139
Dracula 2000 (2000): $33,022,767
Daybreakers (2009): $30,101,577
Priest (2011): $29,136,626
Fright Night (2011): $18,302,607
Let Me In (2010): $12,134,935
What We Do In the Shadows (2014): $3,469,224
Let the Right One In (2008): $2,122,065
Only Lovers Left Alive (2013): 1,879,534
Total: $2,080,884,017
So yes, vampires made a lot of money over the past twenty years, but what’s interesting is that if we remove the Twilight factor, they’d be somewhere way down between mummies and witches in terms of box office revenue. That means that it’s actually demons and ghosts that have managed to have the most consistent and lasting impact on movie ticket sales.
Supernatural creatures are embodiments of the things we fear or don’t understand, and they rise and fall in trendiness just as any other pop culture phenomenon. The ones that don’t seem to ever go out of style, however, happen to be the ones that many people actually believe in: ghosts and demons.
One 2013 study by Huff Post and YouGov showed that about 45 percent of Americans believed in ghosts, while nearly one in five U.S. adults say they’ve seen or been in the presence of a ghost, according to Pew Research Center. Meanwhile, in a Public Policy Polling survey from 2012, 57% of respondents said that it was possible for humans to be possessed by demons, and a 2016 Gallop poll also shows that 61% of Americans believe in the devil.
As a 2016 piece by Vox’s Aja Romano pointed out, trends in horror movies tend to reflect the cultural fears at the time. That year, home invasion movies were popular, a genre that’s often aimed at white Americans and can be an allegory for xenophobia. Considering the fact that immigration was one of the 2016 election’s most contentious topics, it’s not exactly difficult to see the connection there.
Ghosts and demons, on the other hand? These will be stoking fears for about as long as their average life span — which is to say, for eternity.
