My mother introduced me to the poetry of Maya Angelou when I was a young girl. This beautiful,captivating painting by @artbywak reminds me of the poem “And Still I Rise” You may write me down in history With your bitter, twisted lies, You may trod me in the very dirt But still, like dust, I’ll rise. Does my sassiness upset you? Why are you beset with gloom? ’Cause I walk like I’ve got oil wells Pumping in my living room. Nobody has any more fun for the rest of the night.

Fast forward 16 years and my cousin sends this picture with the caption “The night we learned Aaliyah passed.”

Imagine being so amazing, and so talented and so memorable, with such an incredible gift for connecting people to one another that the only thing that people – total strangers who have never even laid eyes on you in person – can remember about the day that they found out you died…is the fact that it was the day that they found out you were gone.

Picture it: *Sophia from Golden Girls voice* Houston, TX, Daiquiri Factory, August 25, 2001. Just three girls kickin it. Everyone on the patio having a great time, occasionally jumping up and shouting “Remember this one?!” and trying to remember which Louisiana Bounce move was out when the song came out, when all of a sudden a total random stranger screams “Noooo!” into the payphone (yes payphone) across from us, slams the receiver (yes, receiver) down, runs directly to OUR table (We don’t know you. Keep that mess over there), slams her hands down on OUR table and says… "Aaliyah just died." Nobody has any more fun for the rest of the night.
