"The Heart of Rock and Roll" show #757
Huey Lewis and the News are widely-known for their place in rock and roll, their lyrics, and incredible performances. This iconic concoction of elements has helped them withstand the test of time, and has now infiltrated the musical theatre scene. With Mr. Lewisâ blessing and collaboration, Jonathan A. Abrams and Tyler Mitchell have created a feel-good story inspired by the numerous hits and sing-along standards of Huey Lewis and the News. Though Mr. Abramsâ book is predictable, safe, and mostly funny, he, along with Brian Usiferâs arrangements and orchestrations have ensured that audiences will feel the power of love and leave the Old Globe Theatre smiling and humming their favorite tunes.

Matt Doyle leads the dynamite cast with sublime vocals and a jolly good demeanor. His performance of the playâs central figure, Bobby, is charismatic, charming, and a little too bright-eyed and bushy-tailed for the attempt at rock and roll, bad boy edginess. Bobby is faced with a shallow level of dramatic adversity in his contemplation of rock versus corporate, and friends versus love, and Mr. Doyleâs demeanor is quite chipper for a character who goes from nothing to everything to nothing in an act-and-a-halfâs time. However, Mr. Doyleâs vocal talents are the true highlight of the show, making the early âBe Someoneâ a delicious solo turn. Mr. Doyleâs terrific tenor leads standards like âCouple Days Off,â âThe Heart of Rock and Roll,â and âI Want a New Drugâ with great tone and wonderful energy. Playing corporate love interest to Bobby is Katie Rose Clarke as Cassandra, daughter of company owner, Mr. Stone. Cassandra is second-in-command at her fatherâs box company; yes, a company that makes cardboard boxes. Ms. Clarke lets enough of the motivated, all-business ingĂŠnue melt away naturally as her quirky, flirtatiously awkward demeanor drips out to Bobby. Ms. Clarke is given seldom vocal time to shine, but makes it all worth it with an Act Two torch turn in âIt Hit Me Like a Hammer.â Ms. Clarke, under the clever and simply superb direction of Gordon Greenberg, uses this moment to not just express her inner turmoil, but to let loose the Cassandra the audience and Bobby have been dying to meet. Her timbre and power make it seem as if she is the first person to ever sing this Huey Lewis hit. Ms. Clarke and Mr. Doyle take full advantage of the chemistry between their characters, the strongest aspect of Mr. Abramsâ book, having all kinds of enjoyable banter, genuine romance, and clever turns-of-phrase. Their duet, âIf This Is It,â paints a high point in the show, allowing the nuance of each character to find a culminating resolution to their respective desires.
(John Dossett (Stone) and Katie Rose Clarke (Cassandra); Photo credit: Jim Cox)
John Dossett is a sturdy Stone. His physicality and presence exude corporate big wig while still being theatrically approachable and likeable. Mr. Stoneâs turn in âWorkinâ for a Livinââ is fun but not memorable, while his Act Two âDoinâ It (All for My Baby)â is emotional, sincere, and well-suited for Mr. Dossettâs expert inclinations. Patrice Covington is a firecracker of a supporting performer, delivering a standout turn as Roz, supervisor to Bobby. Ms. Covington plays the long game of heartwarming hard ass, and belts out a stellar grouping of lines in âThe Power of Love.â Orville Mendoza performance is hilarious as Fjord, the object of Cassandra and Stoneâs corporate desire to partner in business. Mr. Mendozaâs comedic lines and expression are impeccably delivered. However, Billy Harrigan Tighe is the winner for comedic performance as Tucker, Cassandraâs preppy ex-lover. Unfortunately for Mr. Tighe, his character is given the most convoluted journey in the play, but he rises above it to make his âThatâs Not Meâ and âWorld to Meâ show stopping numbers. His Act Twoâs âStuck With Youâ is given all the acapella/boyband treatment and comedic gravitas to sell sublimely. Mr. Tigheâs commitment to the stupidity his character exudes is worthy of all applause and laughter he receives.

Lorin Latarroâs choreography is just right for this production. The highlight rising above expected ensemble formations and notable moves is in the outstanding âHip to be Square,â ensuring I will never again look at a sheet of bubble wrap the same. Ms. Latarroâs choreography adds fluidity to Mr. Greenbergâs effective staging, ensuring there is never a lull. The eye-rolling, box company setting for much of the early plot isnât as groan-worthy as one may think; Derek McLaneâs all-too-similar to another of his jukebox musicalâs set (ahem, that little Carole King musical, anyone?) ensures that boxes are not just what they sell, but part of the visual stimuli for the audience to contextually enjoy. Howell Binkleyâs lighting design is gorgeous and electric, adding character to the rock band moments and intimacy to the scenes and ballads. Major design applause allotted to Paloma Gwinâs beautiful costume work, an array of modern, corporate, sporty, and 80âs tacky that is enjoyed throughout the production.

Itâs not an easy task to create a jukebox musical. The balance of making standards fit an interesting plot cannot be a cake walk. Mr. Abrams and Mr. Usifer have done more than just shoehorn numbers into a plot, but rather have given many of the songs new meaning and theatrical depth to truthfully suit the needs of the play. In short, this musical rocks! You have until October 21st to rock out to Huey Lewis and the News in a whole new way.
