In this #architecture #sketch, Sean Murray (@seanandrewmurray) shows us one of the glorious views from Tower City, a district in Sean’s ever-diverse, genre-branching world, The Great City of Gateway. From these dizzying heights among the towers’ upper walkways, it is initially difficult to see where one building begins and another ends. However, as you peer closer into the Escher-like labyrinth of stone and glass, distinctive architectural styles and designs make themselves known to you. According to Gateway lore (i.e., Sean’s posts), these towers were erected by powerful & famous wizards. The mages attempted to outdo each other through a sort of skyscraper showdown, where each new erected edifice, building addition, or structural modification was just a means to reach greater heights and display more ostentatious or elaborate tower design. While it would appear that the towers were only limited by the wizard’s own imagination, my own personal guess is that the design and construction of each tower were actually restricted by the number of workers that were available, and the magical prowess of the wizard that commissioned the tower or towers. So much magical energy was likely channeled into these projects that, after looking from this view for a few minutes, you might start to wonder whether the towers are still even connected to the ground anymore, or if the whole mass of Tower City just decided to harness those latent energies and float away… after all, why should all the other buildings in Gateway be permitted to associate themselves with the greatness that is Tower City.
