Pleasure. it's already over

Working on this one for a little bit and now I'm sharing the "final" piece. Honestly I never feel that my paintings are finished. Never. There is no miraculous moment at the end where I can put a neat little bow on the whole process. I usually feel stuck, take pictures, take a few days, and stare at it a lot. I draw over the photos to see if I can add anything more to make it feel perfect and done. I look at it from every angle and in all kinds of light. I agonize.

And you know what I realized? I hate that part. The last 10-20% is torture. It's the opposite of what I'm trying to achieve with my art. I want to find peace and calm in my process. I want the materials to guide me and my mind to quiet down. And so, the piece is already finished. It's already over. The whole process is already done by the time I start to think too hard about finishing it. The process is the art. It took me too damn long to figure that out.

Fun comparison! The first image is Carbon Black acrylic from @goldenpaints. This is my go to black from my go to brand of acrylic paint. I LOVE carbon black, it is silky smooth, easy to work with and VERY DARK. Much darker than a mars or ivory. I always have it on hand, and it's still #1 in my heart for it's depth of dark and ease of use, plus the way it plays nice with other paint in general.

Here I compare it with Suminagashi 2, a painting I made using Black 4.0 from @culturehustle . It is the blackest paint I've ever used. It's a dark velvety void, and when I paint with it, I can BARELY distinguish my loaded brush from the surface. The brush tip just disappears into the darkness. You can really see how much darker it is in the following images.

Now I do love 4.0, but it is a bit hard to work with. It's chunky, cannot be thinned and really does clunk up the brush. It's pretty difficult to get thin lines. And because I cannot distinguish the brush from the paint already laid down, edge control can be tricky.

It's also dusty, but if I seal it, the dark effect is lost. this is presenting a problem, as the dust is catching in the surface texture of my panel.

However, it's incredibly cool! I think this paint will really shine in 3 dimensional applications, things done to confuse the eye. I want to make a box with tiny pin prick lights.

I want to try playing with a latex resist and a tape resist, see if I can get crisp thin lines that way. Really looking forward to using this paint more.

Doing some experiments with paint lately. Just playing with the materials and trying to find some interesting marks and compositions.

I start with water spread randomly on the paper and then add acrylic ink. Then I draw with the pastels; some random lines and shapes. I finish it up with thin layers of acrylic paint scraped on. Usually making as many as 7 pieces at once to really loosen up.
