Born On October 9th, 1979

Routh is the third of four children born to Catherine LaVaughn (née Lear), a teacher, and Ronald Ray Routh, a carpenter. He was raised in nearby Norwalk. Routh was raised in a Methodist family, and has English, Scottish, German, Irish, Welsh and Dutch ancestry.

Routh grew up in Norwalk, approximately 100 miles (160 km) south of Woolstock, the birthplace of George Reeves, the first actor to play Superman on television. During his childhood, Routh thought a full-time acting career was unrealistic, citing his small-town background. In his spare time, he played the trumpet and the piano.

Routh attended Norwalk High School, where he played sports, and participated in music and theatre. He attended this school at the same time as Jason Momoa, who would also later become an actor in film adaptations of DC Comics. He has described himself as a "momma's boy" and not "the most popular kid" during his school years. Routh has also noted that during his younger years, he was fond of the Superman films and comic books.

Routh attended the University of Iowa for a year, aspiring to be a writer. During this time, he modeled and acted in order to earn his tuition expenses.

He is an American actor. He portrayed Superman in the 2006 film Superman Returns, which garnered him international fame. In 2011, he played the title character of the film Dylan Dog: Dead of Night. He also had a recurring role in the NBC series Chuck, as Daniel Shaw. Routh also played a supporting role in the film Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008), and played Todd Ingram in the film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), reprising the role in the animated series Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023).

Routh has said he was often told that he bore a physical resemblance to Christopher Reeve, who had previously portrayed Superman in a film series. His former manager signed him on because of the resemblance, telling him that he thought Routh would be cast as Superman if there were another film in the series.

In 2014, Routh once again played a superhero for DC Comics as Ray Palmer / The Atom on The CW's Arrow. He was a recurring character throughout season three.

In January 2015, Arrow's co-creator and executive producer Greg Berlanti stated that they were in the midst of "very early" preliminary talks for an additional spin-off series centered on Ray Palmer/The Atom.

In the superhero series Legends of Tomorrow (2016–2022), Routh co-starred as The Atom, along with Arthur Darvill, Wentworth Miller, Victor Garber, and Caity Lotz.

Routh reprised his role as Clark Kent / Superman in the 2019–2020 Arrowverse crossover "Crisis on Infinite Earths", affected by events adapted from the Kingdom Come storyline.

What is the issue with Ezra Miller? Despite the star's off-screen problems, the early response to 'The Flash' has been mostly favorable.

When it comes to "first reactions" from critics and bloggers who attended an early screening of a superhero film, there is one major caveat. These screenings are designed to be uncritical, with a strictly chosen audience and multiple review embargoes. Studios want to maximize enthusiasm while minimizing negative feelings, which explains the generally breathless first reactions to the later panned Justice League or the "game-changer" Black Adam. So take The Flash's early reactions with a grain of salt. Warner Bros. and DC Comics displayed an incomplete print of the upcoming blockbuster to a CinemaCon crowd of largely cinema exhibitors and a few journalists and critics at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on Tuesday night. Following the screening, guests rushed to social media to express their adoration for the film, which is a source of relief for Warner and DC. The Flash's reception has been a major, ahem, flashpoint for the studio in recent months, following an unsettling pattern of disturbing behavior involving its star, Ezra Miller, who has faced multiple arrests for disorderly conduct and assault charges, as well as allegations of grooming and harassing children. Miller, who uses they/them pronouns, issued a statement last fall saying, "I want to apologize to everyone who has been alarmed and upset by my previous behavior." I am dedicated to putting in the effort required to return to a healthy, safe, and productive stage in my life." Some speculated that The Flash could still be released with Miller playing a double role (Miller's title character races through time, resulting in a buddy action comedy with dual versions of the hero) and Warner focused on cutting costs and rebooting the underperforming DC division. After all, officials didn't back down from canceling the $90 million Batgirl, which sent shockwaves across the industry. But, as Miller's off-screen problems mounted, Warner Bros. and DC refused to cut connections; instead, insiders remained optimistic about The Flash after early test screenings reinforced the notion that the film was really, really terrific.  Its $200 million price tag didn't make it as disposable as Batgirl, and the film's multiverse-hopping plot set up a reset of the DC Universe, introducing new heroes like Supergirl (Sasha Calle) while also providing the obligatory fan service by bringing back beloved Batguy Michael Keaton, as well as several high-profile cameos. Andy Muschietti, the captivating director who shot to stardom with his tremendously successful adaptation of Stephen King's It, served as ringmaster, taking over a project that had gone through at least four filmmakers before him. While Miller, Keaton, and Calle were absent from the studio's earlier Tuesday CinemaCon address, Muschietti and executives skirted around their star dilemma. Miller's numerous controversies were not mentioned, but the director commended their work ethic, calling Miller "an incredible actor." For the time being, Warner Bros. appears to believe that disregarding Miller's off-screen difficulties and relying on fans to love the film anyway is the best course of action.
