I visited @thefamousflames in Camden today. A new Retro/Soul music themed burger and chicken place, from the family of @staxdiner and @boondocksldn. This place is definitely more focused on chicken, offering 1 cheeseburger with an option to add maple beef bacon, but you've got a choice of 4 chicken burgers, wings done 6 ways, chicken tenders, and chicken and waffles. Getting Your Hands Dirty

Camden Town is full of great places  to eat, but literally a stones throw away from the station you'll find a quirky new poultry palace called The Famous Flames.  Banging out loud 70's disco, James Brown serenades the wood panelled space covered in colourful retro posters.  Different guitars and musical light fixtures hang from the walls and ceiling like percussion symbol and drum chandeliers.  Their specialty is fried buttermilk chicken.  It's really good, well seasoned and the coating has a perfectly crispy, fluffy crunch.  You can get sandwiches from a mild buffalo to a hotter honey habanero and for the really brave, the Nashville hot one with cayenne pepper, brown sugar and garlic.  They serve tenders with the creamiest blue cheese dipping sauce.  Waffle fries and bold purple apple poppy seed slaw.  The best thing on the menu were the wings.  Tossed in sauces like the Saigon caramel (fish sauce, fried garlic and chilli oil) and general Tso's (soy, sesame and red chilli).  I loved their garlic Parmesan ones best of all.  There's no way you can eat all this neatly, be prepared with A LOT of napkins.  Great food in a hot new venue.

2017.4.17 <vol.3> 今月の黒い映画：『ジェームス・ブラウン　最高の魂（ソウル）を持つ男』（2015年）

　さて、私のささやかな企画『黒い映画』も今回でvol.3となりました。今回ご用意しました『ジェームス・ブラウン〜最高の魂（ソウル）を持つ男〜』は、ジャームス・ブラウン（以下JB）を題材とした初の伝記映画です。

　みなさんがJBについて知ろうとした時、どのような道筋をたどったとしても「ファンク」という言葉にぶつかると思います。しかしここで私が思うことは、「ファンク」がJBなのであって、JBが「ファンク」なわけではないということです。

　JBをJBたらしめている彼の最も大きな仕事の一つとして、「ファンク」というスタイルを打ち立てたという事をまず挙げなくてはなりません。その上でまず押さえておかなくてはならないのが、彼のキャリアの一番初めからファンクサウンドが完成されていたわけではないという事です。初期のJBは当時のR&B的なアプローチで活躍しており、Little Richardの影響を受けたであろうナンバーも残っています。それは、JamesBrown&TheFamousFlames名義で59年にリリースされた『Please Please Please』というアルバムでも聞く事ができ、JBの若々しいシャウトを聞く事ができます。今回の映画の中で、Little Richardのショーの合間に飛び入りして『Caldonia』というナンバーを歌うシーンがありますが、あの音源はJBの64年にリリースされたもので、突き刺さるようなシャウトが最高です。でもきっと飛び入りした当時のJBは、まだあんな洗練されたシャウトはできなかったんじゃないかとも思ってます。シャウトは奥が深いですね。

　では「ファンク」がいつ生まれたのか？それについては、JBの楽曲からそのタイミングを考えた時、諸説あります。例えば、64年の『Out of sight』がその出発点であるといってみたり、ま��は65年の『Papa's Got a Brand New Bag』がファンクの原点である、など見解は様々です。この2つに加え、65年の『 I Got You (I Feel Good)] 』も、ファンクの萌芽はもちろん感じ取る事が出来ますが、私の目線から言えば、JB的ファンクサウンドという意味で考えれば、67年の『Cold Sweat』を特別な存在として挙げたいです。

　しかしながら「ファンク」の源流というのは、JBだけが生み出したものであるとは言いにくいでしょう。いままでのアメリカのブラックミュージック、特に南部のダンスミュージックを、JBという特別なフィルターを通して解釈した時、JB的ファンクサウンドが生まれてきたわけです。アメリカの音楽ジャーナリストであるネルソン・ジョージ氏は、日本のbmrのインタビューで「ジェイムズ・ブラウンが存在しなかったとしても、ファンク・サウンドのようなものは存在しただろう。ただし、ファンクを最も正確かつ興味深く、見事に演ることができたのは、ジェイムズ・ブラウンだ。」と答えています。いま我々の時代から考えた時の「ファンク」、これがJBの影響を全く持たないものが一つもないという意味で、「ファンク」とはJBである。こう言い換える事ができると思うのです。

　その一方で私は、JBとは「ファンク」である、とは言いたくありません。「ファンク」をJB 無しに語る事は出来ませんが、JBを語る際に「ファンク」とは、一要素にすぎないのではないかと思うのです。この事について考える時、私は私自身、JBのかっこよさについて考え直すだけでなく、自分が好きなものについて考えるきっかけにもなります。長くなってきてしまうので、寛容な事だけお伝えしたいですが、JBの良さはやはりその圧倒的なパワーです。音楽的な新たな要素以上に、1人の人間のパワーが、そのまま説得力として観客に伝わって来る。絵画で言えばジャクソン・ポロックや大竹伸朗、それ以上に、人々の目や耳にそのまま訴える、爆発のようなパフォーマンスをするのが「パフォーマー」JBでしょう。また公民権運動においてもわかることですが、彼の挑戦はステージに立つだけにとどまりませんでした。様々な失敗もありますが、向かってくる問題に対して逃げず、むしろ実直に向き合っていった。この事も忘れてはならない要素です。「ファンク」に限らず、当時のR&BやJAZZ、または日常の人間的な力に関しても、パワフルな存在であったと言えるでしょう。

　最後に、この映画のシーンにある質問を残しておきます。JBはサックスを指差して「これはなんの楽器だ？」と質問します。答えはなんでしょうか。この映画がJBを知るきっかけになれば嬉しいです。

@thefamousflames "You can never go wrong ordering the signature dishes" This is what I say to myself when walking into restaurants, especially if it was one that I have never visited. @thefamousflames is an American restaurant that does awesome burgers 🍔, wings 🍗 chips 🍟 Atmosphere was great with retro music 🎶 so you would want to eat-in even though it's mainly a takeaway restaurant that there aren't many seats and tables. I always think American restaurants are everywhere and are difficult to stand out but actually it was better than I expected 😁 Location: Very convenient as it's right next to Camden town station 🚇 Food 🍴: Since it was my first visit to the restaurant, I let the waitress to order something that would impress me. I can only take a bit of spicy food so she ordered garlic parmesan wings 🍗🍗🍗 (with one 'chilli' indicated in the menu) for me but it turned out the wings were completely not spicy at all. The wings 🍗 were better than I thought and it was well coated with garlic but I like wings to be a bit spicy rather than completely not spicy 🤔 Defo going to try the Classic Buffalo 🍗🍗🍗 next time! Double Patty 🍔 was nice, apparently the buns are the same as the ones in Shake Shack. Waffle fries were lovely with the nacho cheese🍟😊 (at The Famous Flames London)
