Happy Birthday James Brown! I love of the music of James Brown. Everything about it speaks to me, the drumming by some of the greatest who have ever graced a throne, thumping bass, screaming organ, syncopated guitar, whaling horns and of course James’ own language based on words, phrases, sounds, grunts and screams. I love it all. I love all the players and singers on his many labels and productions. This, despite the fact that there are stories about him that should be enough to put you off, or even revile him. Whether true or not, they helped shape him. Art and music should be judged away from the creator. The culmination of life’s experiences form the heart and soul of creativity but are not always evident in the final result. I recently heard the story of Ella Fitzgerald’s childhood it is horrific. I have never been a fan of her music because it is so happy. But, after hearing her story, good for her. Find your bliss. James Brown had a difficult childhood too. He shaped those experiences into something that brought him joy and success. He even created a genre of music, Funk. Prior to James’ hit “Out Of Sight,” in 1964, "Papa ’s Got A Brand New Bag,” and I Got You (I Feel Good)” both from 1965, it is very difficult to identify anything as legitimately Funk. The sound was building, he was listening and he found it. "The One!” I laugh when I watch the Matrix and they say they are looking for, "The One.” If you find it, shits gonna get funky. So, Happy Birthday to the man, myth and especially the legend… The Godfather of Soul, Soul Brother Number One, Mr. Dynamite, The Hardest Working Man in Show Business 1 - 2 - 3 - 4! James Brown! Today we celebrate the life, style and legacy of the late James Joseph Brown aka The Godfather of Soul. Brown combined the power of gospel with the emotion of R&B, the integrity of soul with the bravado of rock ‘n’ roll to create the explosive sound and electric spirit of funk. Mr. Dynamite redefined the art and showmanship of performance and presentation with his vivid imagination and raw talent. His hits like “I Got This Feelin’,” “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag,” “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine,” “Please, Please, Please” and so many other classics have a special place in our memories and the American soundtrack. No wonder he was also referred to as the Hardest Working Man In Show Business. Thank you for the sound, the soul and the funk. Rest in peace.
