Taking Back Sunday and Every Time I Die at the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, Michigan

I will admit I was wondering how this show would pop off. Then a few days before the show it Sold Out. I knew then it was going to be insane. At first, my brain always goes to "Why isn't the heaviest band playing last?" but in this case, it worked so fucking perfectly. I missed All Get Out and could hear them rocking out from the line outside. After a mishap with my photo pass at the door, I got in a few moments before Every Time I Die would walk out on stage. 

Shooting Every Time I Die is on another level. I mentally prepare myself to get kicked in the head or squished between security and the stage, or to have liquid flung onto me out of nowhere. I used to describe ETID shows as a house party with no rules at a venue. I mean yeah, hardcore music can get people wildin' out and the dudes from Buffalo did it again. Jordan was in the crowd with his guitar by the second song. He jumped off the bass drum, he fucking went off, as usual. This is very normal for them, so I know I'm describing a major rager, but this was exactly what I expected. After three songs were done I went outside to the smoking section and enjoyed my cartridge pen. A few minutes in and someone propped open the door to the Crofoot just right of the crowd and stage. No longer were the muffled sounds of ETID drowned out by the god awful sounds of EDM at the club next door. They were now going to have to listen to Buffalo's finest for a while. 

With only a couples songs left in ETID's set I saw Adam sneak through a small section of people outside. In turn, a young drunk woman screamed "Adam!!!" and ran to the backstage door before security screamed: "NO NO NO NO" as she flung the door open only to get grabbed by security before she could drunkenly attack Adam. And then I got to enjoy the rest of their set with a breeze. So sweaty. What I didn't take into account is how wound up the crowd was by the time they were done. An extra 15 minutes longer to get Taking Back Sunday's setup led to an increased anticipation too. 30 minutes in between bands isn't exactly what fans dig, but most people understand this is for the betterment of the show. 

I made my way into the photo pit a few minutes before TBS was to take the stage. The photo pit was even more full for TBS than ETID. So cramped! I love when extra elements get added to shooting shows, especially when it matches the rest of the show. They ripped through a setlist that you can see below, which really summed up their career as a band. As usual I tried and failed to fight the urge to scream lyrics while shooting. I understand that I'm there as a professional and media personnel, but give me a break. You try shooting "You Know How I Do" and not screaming at the top of your lungs. I remember seeing Taking Back Sunday with like 30 people at the Shelter and then coming back on the next tour and them selling it out with Brand New. I have literally watched these bands grow from the little ass venues when no one was there to these bigger ballrooms and selling them out on Sunday nights. I love that shit. More reason to keep photographing bands and writing about my experience as they just keep going, as should I.

GALLERY: Lorna Shore live at The Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, Michigan

In March I was sent an email with Lorna Shore's new video for "Flesh Coffin". I get a lot of PR emails for all sorts of genres of music, but the video name resonated with me. This was one of the first ones in a while that was purely death metal. Some of the craziest guitar instrumentation I have ever heard is coming from this band. If only to keep up with their drummer Austin who's drumming playthrough videos I watched after "Flesh Coffin" just to understand how anyone can play drums that fast. Even as a drummer I couldn't wrap my head around it. Giving all the musicians in the band playthrough videos made me appreciate them so much more. 

March 21st, I drove an hour to Pontiac to shoot Lorna Shore's set and the venue was packed. I have shot at the Crofoot Festival ground but never inside the actual venue so this was a first for me. I had no idea it had been seven years since Despised Icon had been to the Detroit area. This alone brought a lot of people to the venue. I got up front and awaited Lorna Shore to come on stage and eventually the lights went dark and they blasted into some of the most brutal death metal I have ever heard in my life.

My expectations of a band I just found out about were incredibly high, and they smashed them, repeatedly for the next 30 minutes. Needless to say, I became a fan of LS before the tour got to Michigan, but seeing them live, even with missing their bass player, they made a fan for life with me. The full-length album will rival every death metal to deathcore record in 2017. So let's get to the gallery already!
