Connected but disconnected

With nearly everyone going to live music having a phone it means we are more connected than ever but are we disconnected from live music performances?

If you were to go to a gig 20 years ago very few people would have had a mobile phone, let alone one that could video the whole performance. Now, you turn up at any venue and before you’ve even got a drink you will pass lots of people on their phones. The distraction of a phone can sometimes be too much for people and they end up spending the entire performance scrolling through Instagram and sending meaningless snapchats. 

The use of phones at gigs, of course, can be good, it's a way to document your experience and make memories. It also works as free exposure and publicity for the artist you are going to see. If someone sees that you had a great time at a gig and the artist performed well, they may be more likely to go and see them at another show and it is a way for the artists to look back and see all the audience having a good time and see the show from their point of view. Everyones been at a gig at some point and seen most of the audience holding their phones up using them as flashlights, this creates a connection between the audience and between the artist and the audience as they become another element to the light show.

It can be very frustrating being stood behind or in front of someone who is using their phone to video the show as you might have the light of the camera flashing on you and distracting you from what's going on, or you might feel a bit more conscious of the people around you so wouldn't want to get as into it without that distraction. 

I do believe that it is good to take some photos and short videos, but let's be honest what are you actually going to do with it? Share 1 minute on Instagram, put it on your story so your story becomes hours long, no one wants to sit through that. Very few people use all the photos and videos they take and therefore probably don't get the full experience because they have been glued to their phones the entire time. When taking a photo or video you are going to be more worried about the quality of that than really living the moment you are experiencing.  “If you magnify that by how many people are also doing that, it just sucks the energy from a room. Live music is about living in the moment, about being there and experiencing it.
