The Cowboy, WiFi on the Prairie (Feel It, 2020)

I appreciate hard working punk bands as much as the next guy, don’t get me wrong. But nothing sounds like a band who’s just simply got it. The Cowboy have it. It’s apparent from the first sound that issues from the speakers when you drop the needle on the thing—just the coda of a bass note, like they had already played a song but forgot to hit record. We’ll never know what came before that bass buzzing. But I’ll bet it was great.

Bass and drums carry the heavy load in The Cowboy. They legitimately sound like a landslide, rumbling and exploding continuously, while the guitar jumps from driving riffs to classic-sounding rock’n’roll licks to dissonant 1988-class-of-noise-rock breaks. Though the main hook, for me, is how effortlessly exciting and catchy their songs are.

Bass player Steve Peffer and guitar player Josh Banaszak used to play in the Homostupids, and The Cowboy has a lot in common with that band. They too sound like superintelligent beings from outer space trying to blend in with a caveman crowd. Banging and smashing things around, they end up smashing up the song structure: no choruses, no verses, just full frontal attack, and floating scraps of intros, outros or bridges show up when least expected. They use the same approach when it comes to lyrics: free-associating fragments of thought that successfully build a wacky Cowboy world around the listener. I want to pick a line but I have so many favorites. Fuck it, I’ll go with “Swing low / Smooth Chariot”. Perfection.

One could argue that this is how somebody who writes a review should always feel, but I feel like a fucking tool trying to explain why WiFi on the Prairie is a such a brilliant record. A grunt and a hand gesture should suffice.

Here's what I don't understand: How the fuck can someone be that cute, that sweet, and still think that he's unworthy or something like that?

I wish he wasn't so fucking oblivious, wish that I could just come out of the gate and tell him how I feel. I'm absolutely hopeless when it comes to him. He's sweet, kind, smart, everything you want in a person, and yet he's the most oblivious man I've met!

I feel like if I try to tell him how I feel, it'll fail, and I'll just descend into senseless rambling, but I don't know, maybe he'd think it's cute or something weird like that.

The background text I've been playing with "TECHNO ARMAGEDDON" is from an old image notebook I started in Budapest in 1992. The fragment was from a concert featuring the Armageddon Dildos. Sadly, I don't think I attended.
