Those red eyes, softer and darker now, muted, stare at her crumpled form. The young male face that besets her is expressionless, no indication of what he thinks or feels or what he might do to her -- how he might attack. Cursed souls, she’s been told, aren’t too intelligent. They follow their witch’s orders. Live only to serve and be disposed of. She holds her breath, tries to remain on guard, to be prepared for whatever might come.

Except, she isn’t prepared, not at all, when the cursed soul turns his back on her and leaves.

Something inside of her snaps, mourning, and she shouts curses at him with an anguish she doesn’t understand. Frustration, sickness from the venom and her wounds, she guesses.

Later, as she reflects on where her hunt went wrong, as she wraps her shattered side, as fumbling fingers mortar and pestle an antidote for the venom, she finds that something in her is sorry he didn’t kill her when he had the chance.
