In Praise of the Monologue

When casting actors, I would never ask for a monologue for the audition. I felt sure they could tell me nothing about what an actor would do in a show. About Me

A 17-year-old student from East Anglia, I have a passion for poetry, journalism, and theatre. 

Journalism 

My interests in journalism lie in reviews of books and theatre, and opinion pieces on issues such as mental health, education, climate change, and the arts. I started out in writing through the Guardian Children's Books website, and one of my articles made it onto the main page of The Guardian website. Following this I was Editor-in-Chief of my secondary school newspaper. This summer I am taking part in the News Academy summer school run by News UK (The Times, The Sun, HarperCollins and more).

Poetry

I love poetry for the freedom it gives you to express ideas and feelings without the restrictions of prose form. I started writing poetry at the age of thirteen after entering a local competition. My poetry has since won the Forward Student Creative Critics competition in 2018, and I have also placed second in the Ted Hughes Young Poet of the Year, been Highly Commended in the St Hilda's College Oxford Science Poetry competition, and placed in several challenges on the Young Poets Network, including second place in their 'Namedropping' challenge. I've also recently discovered a love for translating poetry due to both my A Level study of French and a workshop I took part in at the Poetry Cafe on translating from a crib.

Theatre 

While I’m only just starting out in writing about theatre, I spend a lot of time seeing shows and keeping up to date with the latest theatre news. My passion lies in musical theatre, and my favourite productions I’ve seen include the 2018 Chess revival and Hamilton. I also enjoy unusual adaptations of Shakespeare, and having seen videos and read articles about the work of Deaf West in the US, would like to further explore how theatre as an art form can be adapted and altered to be both more interesting and more accessible. I perform myself, with my proudest moment being singing solo at The Royal Albert Hall with Theatretrain.

I have credited a lot of actors and films as inspiration for my career as a performer, but tonight, as we had a special movie & dinner night (rare with us), it dawned on me that Mary Poppins (and other films of it’s kind) were much more influential. Large characters, very stylized, over the top (yet precise) physicality. Things I have brought to the stage for decades. Others refined my skills, but here I was inspired.
