Middle grade. In Lyra's world, every person has a daemon: an animal companion who follows them throughout life. When children begins being stolen off the street, among them Lyra's friend, she must embark on a great journey to save him, taking her to the furthest north - and beyond. A note: the angels do not appear until the second book, however this trilogy is very much worth a read from the start.
Gunmetal Gods by Zamil Akhtar
Dark fantasy inspired by the crusades. Seeking revenge, Micah the Metal leads an army of men baptized i angel's blood against the kingdom that stole his daughter. It’s up to Kevah, legendary fighter, to stop him and save his people. But ever since losing his wife a decade ago, Kevah has lost his fighting spirit. To defeat Micah, he must find it within himself a will to live again. While featuring (scary eldritch) angels, they serve more as a driving background/world-building force than as actual characters.
Horror angels

Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White
Young adult post apocalypse. The world has ended, and sixteen-year-old trans boy Benji is on the run from the cult that caused armageddon. Infected with the bioweapon they released to bring about the end, Benji is slowly transforming into something not quite human and desperate to find someplace safe. When coming across a group of surviving teens, Benji finds something new to fight for. No traditional angels, but it does play with the concept.
Angel Radio by A.M. Blaushild
Young adult post apocalypse. A week after strange and terrifying angels appeared, humanity is dead. Sole survivor of her town, teenage Erika is left wandering on her own. That is, until she catches an odd broadcast on the radio which lures her into the newly emptied world. Sci-fi angels
Archangel Protocol (LINK Angel series) by Lyda Morehouse
Cyberpunk. Archangel by Sharon Shinn
For twenty years, archangel Raphael has ruled over the lands, leading to corruption among both angels and mortals. Now the time has come for the angel Gabriel to become archangel, but first he must find his Angelica, a mortal woman chosen by Jehovah to be by his side. Terminal World by Alastair Reynolds
On a dying earth, society is separated by zones in which the laws of reality shift, allowing for different levels of technology and life. At the top of Spearpoint, the only surviving city, lies the Celestial zone, in which only angels can survive. Quillon, former angel who's had his wings removed and body changed so he can survive and infiltrate the lower zones, has been in hiding for years when he receives a warning that his former people are hunting him. Forced on the run, Quillon must leave Spearpoint for the dangerous wastes beyond, where he will discover ancient secrets of his world.
Space angels
Dust by Elizabeth Bear
In a dying spaceship, orbiting an equally dying sun, noblewoman Perceval waits for her own gruesome death. Having been captured by an opposing house, her wings severed and life forfeit, Perceval’s execution is imminent - until a young servant charged with her care proves to be Perceval’s long lost sister. To stop a war between houses likely to doom them all, the two flee together across a crumbling, dangerous spaceship. At its core waits Jacob Dust, god and angel, all that remains of what the ship once was. And he wants Perceval. Sapphic and asexual characters, however be prepared for kinda fucked up relationships.
The Outside by Ada Hoffman*
AKA the book the put me in an existential crisis. Souls are real, and they are used to feed AI gods in this lovecraftian inspired sci-fi where reality is warped and artificial gods stand against real, unfathomable ones. Autistic scientist Yasira is accused of heresy and, to save her eternal soul, is recruited by cybernetic ‘angels’ to help hunt down her own former mentor, who is threatening to tear reality itself apart. Sapphic main character.
The Genesis of Misery by Neon Yang
Space opera inspired by Joan of Arc. Misery Nomaki possesses rare stone-working abilities usually found among only saints and the voidmad. Not believing herself the be former and desperately not wanting to become the latter, Misery is trying to keep a low profile. Her attempt fails when the voice of an angel - or a very convincing delusion - leads her to become the centerpiece of a dangerous battle between two warring factions hoping to use her. Very unique and cool conceptually, but a little all over the place in how it handles its plot.
Bonus AKA I haven’t read these yet but they seem really cool
Dusk in Kalevia by Emily Compton
Toivo Valonen is a secret agent in more ways than one. An angel masquerading as human, he's acted as a source of hope for humanity in wartime throughout history. In 1960, he embarks on an undercover mission to Kalevia, allied with a rebellion against the government. In his way is fellow angel and rival agent Demyan Chernyshev, who’s working for the KGB.
The House of Shattered Wings by Aliette de Bodard
Having just barely survived the Great Houses War, much of Paris lies in ruins. Morningstar, founder of the House Silverspires, has gone missing, and something is stalking the people within the House's walls. Three people, a Fallen, an alchemist, and a man wielding spells from the far east, may be prove to be Silverspire's salvation.
The Worst Perfect Moment by Shivaun Plozza
Young adult. Sixteen-year-old Tegan is dead and i heaven. There, she's supposed to be reliving her happiest memory. Except the moment Tegan has been placed in isn't very happy at all. Guided by an angel, Tegan is brought through her past to understand what most matters to her. If she fails to see the happiness in her assigned memory, the consequences would be dire for both her and the angel.

Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman (2005)
When Fat Charlie's dad named something, it stuck. Like calling Fat Charlie "Fat Charlie." Even now, 20 years later, Charlie Nancy can't shake that name, one of the many embarrassing "gifts" his father bestowed-before he dropped dead on a karaoke stage and ruined Fat Charlie's life. Because Mr. Nancy left Fat Charlie things. Things like the tall, good-look-ing stranger who appears on Charlie's doorstep, who appears to be the brother he never knew. A brother as different from Charlie as night is from day, a brother who's going to show Charlie how to lighten up and have a lit-the fun. And all of a sudden, things start getting very interesting for Fat Charlie. Exciting, scary, and deeply funny, Anansi Boys is a kaleidoscopic journey deep into myth, a wild adventure, as Neil Gaiman shows us where gods come from, and how to survive your family.
Gemma Doyle by Libba Bray (2003-2007)
It's 1895, and after the suicide of her mother, 16-year-old Gemma Doyle is shipped off from the life she knows in India to Spence, a proper boarding school in England. Lonely, guilt-ridden, and prone to visions of the future that have an uncomfortable habit of coming true, Gemma's reception there is a chilly one. To make things worse, she's been followed by a mysterious young Indian man, a man sent to watch her. But why? What is her destiny? And what will her entanglement with Spence's most powerful girls—and their foray into the spiritual world—lead to?
Babel: An Arcane History by R. F. Kuang (2022)
Traduttore, traditore: An act of translation is always an act of betrayal.
1828. Robin Swift, orphaned by cholera in Canton, is brought to London by the mysterious Professor Lovell. There, he trains for years in Latin, Ancient Greek, and Chinese, all in preparation for the day he'll enroll in Oxford University's prestigious Royal Institute of Translation — also known as Babel. Babel is the world's center of translation and, more importantly, of silver-working: the art of manifesting the meaning lost in translation through enchanted silver bars, to magical effect. Silver-working has made the British Empire unparalleled in power, and Babel's research in foreign languages serves the Empire's quest to colonize everything it encounters.
Oxford, the city of dreaming spires, is a fairytale for Robin; a utopia dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge. But knowledge serves power, and for Robin, a Chinese boy raised in Britain, serving Babel inevitably means betraying his motherland. As his studies progress Robin finds himself caught between Babel and the shadowy Hermes Society, an organization dedicated to sabotaging the silver-working that supports imperial expansion. When Britain pursues an unjust war with China over silver and opium, Robin must decide: Can powerful institutions be changed from within, or does revolution always require violence? What is he willing to sacrifice to bring Babel down?
Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard by Rick Riordan (2015-2017)
Magnus Chase has seen his share of trouble. Ever since that terrible night two years ago when his mother told him to run, he has lived alone on the streets of Boston, surviving by his wits, staying one step ahead of the police and the truant officers.
One day, Magnus learns that someone else is trying to track him down—his uncle Randolph, a man his mother had always warned him about. When Magnus tries to outmaneuver his uncle, he falls right into his clutches. Randolph starts rambling about Norse history and Magnus's birthright: a weapon that has been lost for thousands of years.
The more Randolph talks, the more puzzle pieces fall into place. Stories about the gods of Asgard, wolves, and Doomsday bubble up from Magnus's memory. But he doesn't have time to consider it all before a fire giant attacks the city, forcing him to choose between his own safety and the lives of hundreds of innocents. . . .
Sometimes, the only way to start a new life is to die.
Abhorsen by Garth Nix (1995-2016)
Sent to a boarding school in Ancelstierre as a young child, Sabriel has had little experience with the random power of Free Magic or the Dead who refuse to stay dead in the Old Kingdom. But during her final semester, her father, the Abhorsen, goes missing, and Sabriel knows she must enter the Old Kingdom to find him. She soon finds companions in Mogget, a cat whose aloof manner barely conceals its malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage long imprisoned by magic, now free in body but still trapped by painful memories.
As the three travel deep into the Old Kingdom, threats mount on all sides. And every step brings them closer to a battle that will pit them against the true forces of life and death--and bring Sabriel face-to-face with her own destiny.
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern (2019)
Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a mysterious book hidden in the stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood. Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues--a bee, a key, and a sword--that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to an ancient library, hidden far below the surface of the earth.
What Zachary finds in this curious place is more than just a buried home for books and their guardians--it is a place of lost cities and seas, lovers who pass notes under doors and across time, and of stories whispered by the dead. Zachary learns of those who have sacrificed much to protect this realm, relinquishing their sight and their tongues to preserve this archive, and also those who are intent on its destruction.
Together with Mirabel, a fierce, pink-haired protector of the place, and Dorian, a handsome, barefoot man with shifting alliances, Zachary travels the twisting tunnels, darkened stairwells, crowded ballrooms, and sweetly-soaked shores of this magical world, discovering his purpose--in both the mysterious book and in his own life.
The Roots of Chaos by Samantha Shannon (2019-2023) The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction--but assassins are getting closer to her door.
Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic.
Across the dark sea, Tané has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.
Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.
The Winternight Trilogy by Katherine Arden (2017-2019)
Winter lasts most of the year at the edge of the Russian wilderness, and in the long nights, Vasilisa and her siblings love to gather by the fire to listen to their nurse’s fairy tales. Above all, Vasya loves the story of Frost, the blue-eyed winter demon. Wise Russians fear him, for he claims unwary souls, and they honor the spirits that protect their homes from evil.
Then Vasya’s widowed father brings home a new wife from Moscow. Fiercely devout, Vasya’s stepmother forbids her family from honoring their household spirits, but Vasya fears what this may bring. And indeed, misfortune begins to stalk the village.
But Vasya’s stepmother only grows harsher, determined to remake the village to her liking and to groom her rebellious stepdaughter for marriage or a convent. As the village’s defenses weaken and evil from the forest creeps nearer, Vasilisa must call upon dangerous gifts she has long concealed—to protect her family from a threat sprung to life from her nurse’s most frightening tales.
The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo (2003)
As the only surviving mouse of the litter, Despereaux was always considered the loser, the runt, so naturally, he falls in love with a princess named Pea. The story also tells of a mouse called Roscuro, who lives in the darkness but wishes for light, and Miggery Sow, a serving girl who wants one wish. They set off on a journey that will end them up in a terrible dungeon, a wonderful castle, and of course, with each other.
Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree (2022-2024)
Worn out after decades of packing steel and raising hell, Viv the orc barbarian cashes out of the warrior’s life with one final score. A forgotten legend, a fabled artifact, and an unreasonable amount of hope lead her to the streets of Thune, where she plans to open the first coffee shop the city has ever seen.
However, her dreams of a fresh start pulling shots instead of swinging swords are hardly a sure bet. Old frenemies and Thune’s shady underbelly may just upset her plans. To finally build something that will last, Viv will need some new partners and a different kind of resolve.

I'm rereading Matthew Swift, and getting close to the end of The Midnight Mayor. And the further into it I get the more I realize that this book is not only my favorite, but the book that defined the series for me.
A Madness of Angels is a great introduction. We meet Matthew, we meet the angels, we meet London, we're immersed in Kate Griffin's glorious prose and the magic of the city. We get the answers to Matthew's questions--"Who killed me, and who brought us back?" We get the climax, the confrontation of the past. Madness of Angels is the origin story.
Midnight Mayor, though, is the thesis statement. Rereading it, knowing what's coming, I am reveling in how the entirety of this book is setting up its perfect final declaration. Every little thing it chooses to dwell on, for what seems like no particular reason. Strangers. The stones of the city. Give me back my hat. The work of all the millions of invisible people who make the city run, bring in the food to feed it, take the trash away. The Aldermen, their philosophy, that speech Mr. Earle gives about a city of ants, all of them following blindly, nothing binding them together but the structure of the city, and of course the Aldermen are the only ones who see it--how very Plato of him! The only one who can see the real world casting its shadows on the wall (ha) of the cave, how enlightened, of course he should be in charge, at least according to him.
(Can you see me slipping into Kate Griffin's writing style? I love the rhythm of it. It's rubbing off on me.)
Every part of this story is slowly building up evidence, refuting counterarguments, preparing us for the thesis at the end of the book. Matthew tells us life is magic, sorcery is a point of view, and in Midnight Mayor we get to see what that point of view is. And more than that--we're invited to join in it ourselves.
When I say that the Matthew Swift books are bursting with love for humanity, what I'm talking about is how one act of kindness, from a stranger, saves the city of London from mythical destruction. How the Aldermen look at the city and see ants, interchangeable and insignificant, and Matthew looks at the city and says no, every single one of those is a human with thoughts and dreams and buses to catch, and every single one of them matters. No such thing as strangers. No one is alone.
Every time I read this book, I think, this is how I want to look at the world.
#this ran away from me a little bit#cutting it off there so i don't write another thousand words of prosetry#in addition to giving us a glimpse at the magic of the city i also appreciate kate griffin for giving me an excuse to use SO many commas#but i do need to stop somewhere#stars has thoughts#matthew swift#the midnight mayor#stars meta#i was trying so hard to write this in a way that doesn't spoil the actual plot#im still trying to bait all my friends into reading this series#do it it's so good

@when-you-are-stranger you might like this :)
Kate naturally wasn't a jealous person. Normally, she was quite confident in who she was seeing and how they were feeling about her at any given moment. It'd never been a problem before, certainly, that she'd gotten hotheaded over a partner.
So when she snapped the pencil in front of Lucy getting flirted with--- well....that was a new experience for her. Lucy wasn't entertaining the flirtatious advances, of course. They were together. But that didn't mean Kate liked seeing it happen.... Right in front of her coffee, for fuck's sake!
Okay, so maybe while they were together, and that was factual, it wasn't exactly... well known to the rest of the team. They were keeping things down on the low, secret. Kate wasn't even sure why anymore. It had been her idea.
So Kate couldn't even get mad.
(More mad than she was.)
She wanted to get mad.
(Pencils be damned.)
She wanted to declare in front of everyone that they were a couple and to back The Fuck Off of her girl. But that was an angry thought, a thought based off fear of rejection. Instead, she commented on the pick up line with a dry look. "You broke my pencil by being bold enough to use that dull of a line." She drawled out.
Lucy giggled. Oh god, Kate wanted to give her the world. Kate sighed as she looked at Lucy, "what? Was it going to work?" she asked lightly. Trying to infuse in her tone of voice that she was not threatened by this man's "moves" or lack thereof.
Lucy rolled her eyes, looking only slightly apologetically at the coffee shop employee. "Sorry, but no. I've heard lines about these eyes longer than you've been alive, kid." She confessed. "besides that," she added. "I have a partner."
Kate tried not to puff up with pride at the words--- Or at the way the cashier deflated. SHE WAS THAT PARTNER!!!! Yeah!!!!!
Kate needed to get a grip on herself.
"Here's your order."
The barista called out after a pregnant pause --- the pause involving a very loaded gaze off between the two women. Looking at Lucy, Kate couldn't remember why they were keeping this - them - a secret. But she couldn't just out them on her own. No.... bad idea.
"C'mon," Lucy tugged Kate's sleeve along as they grabbed their individual drinks from the counter. "You're holding the line up, Whistler."
"I want to go out with you." Kate said intelligently, obediently allowing herself to be tugged away. "In public. With you. And I want to tell the world that you have decided to give me another chance. But only if that's okay with you! I understand if you don't want to, it's just." Kate gripped her drink almost a little tooooooooo tightly. Luckily, she realised in time and stopped: Stopped the squeeze, stopped the motion of moving forward.
"I understand if I've given off too many red flags for you to even really want to date me at all. But right here and now, all I can think about is kissing the foam off of your lips." Kate continued to ramble, and would have gone on to say more, really! She was prepared with a whole speech! Except!
Lucy kissed her. In front of all the coffee shop. In front of all the employees who had hit on her. In front of all the customers who were waiting on their mediocre coffee. And oh god, Kate could taste the coffee on Lucy's lips as the kiss intensified for three....four, no, five, seconds until Lucy pulled away smiling beatifically.
"I could think of worse things."
Kate couldn't think of anything, let alone "Things Worse Than Dating Her".
All she could think of was the taste Lucy had allowed her of a life that she So. Desperately. Wanted.
A life with Lucy Tara.

Kate Poroshenko in Dawn/Shadow & Bone,
Hannah(say my name) in TMW/Punisher,
Or Toni in Tammy/Stranger Things
Okay, first of all, cue me trying to remember Hannah...
Kate in Shadow and Bone
Let's all agree that the SaB universe is not prepared for Kate.
She gets involved because she totally ends up causing a fight. Not intentionally, but you know Kate isn't going to let blatant bigotry slide
She meets the Crows first. It's Kaz who notices something off about her and sends the others to investigate.
They teach her more about the world she finds herself in, even if she doesn't always agree with their tactics.
Standing up for Grisha is how she meets Aleksander.
you know Kate vs Baghra is going to be a showdown. She's also going to call out the behaviour in people like Alina.
Hannah in TMW/Punisher
Oh Hannah.
Hannah is opportunistic and doesn't put up with bullshit...which you know makes her a perfect person to play Billy off of.
She will call it out like she sees it which gets her in a little trouble but Hannah also knows when to back off
Her personality isn't a good fit for Matt as a romantic pairing but Billy? They'd have a lot of fun.
She basically forces him on a better path
Toni in Stranger Things
Listen, the idea of Toni in stranger things is amazing. So many things would change, okay?
Her place is the PRIME place for comfort. This is 100% where El would go (instead of Benny's) if she was there before s1.
The town is home to so many and I can safely say that Toni takes these kids under her wing (also, El being basically adopted by Toni? Bye bye bad guys, good luck against a hearth witch.)
Toni is like the antithesis to the Upside Down. If she gets the chance to bless the kids and the places they live? They're safe.
In this we would see the full extent of what Toni is capable of and no one would expect it because of how unassuming she looks.
send me the name of one of my ocs and a different fandom from their original one and i’ll write 5 headcanons of what their plot, love interest, etc would be!

Well, hello! I don't recognize the blog name off the top of my head (I'm still half asleep) but what's up? Thanks for asking!
Oh god, choosing one is hard, lol. Let me go with Kate.
Kate's story is Tammy Thompson Takes on the Upside Down and it started with the idea of how terrible it would be to wake up in someone else's body. Especially if you were an adult and woke up as a teenager again. Then I set it in Stranger Things and it became a bit of an anti-thesis to Caught in the Crossfire lol. Simply because Kate doesn't know the story. She knows there's monsters involved and Steve Harrington takes care of some kids, but that's it.
I wanted to focus on the difficulty in adjusting, the fear of not knowing what happened to the person whose body you're in and going from the 2010s back to the 80s. Kate does get involved with the characters and some of the plot of the show (though at the moment, not much because she's trying to find her way through the place) and I used her to also explain some things that the show didn't cover in s3 (like what happened to Carol and Tommy) lol.
Honestly, I just love Kate. I love the person that she is. Courageous, steadfast and who doesn't put up with shit, lol. She's someone who makes the choice not to sit back and let things happen or people be terrible if she can stop it. This is part of what gets her into trouble lol. Her being 28 years old also puts her in this strange place between being a teenager in this universe and connecting more to the adults of the place. It's an EPIC slow burn which I am having a ton of fun with, and I have so many plans for this. I like that Kate doesn't get along with everyone for her own reasons which I feel is realistic. Sometimes you just don't vibe with people and she makes mistakes but she works through it and tries to fix them. She holds people accountable and gets held accountable in turn.
Kate's story is definitely a happier one compared to The Art of Seclusion and Caught in the Crossfire, even with the angst in it lol. I have so many plans for this fic which takes place further past season 3 (I can safely say I do wildly deviate from canon at a point, especially after s3). It's been a lot of fun to write, especially some of her fights or interactions (like with Tommy, Carol, or Billy lol).
(While Kate eventually ends up with Steve, I have a pairing planned for Robin as well as one for Billy. I don't think anyone will guess what I have planned for Billy who's going to earn his redemption).
