September 15, 2023 Very recommendable witchy fiction.😍 I love the series "The Witches of Portland" by T. Thorn Coyle because the witches there and their magic are depicted in a realistic way. T. Thorn Coyle is a witch and it shows in their fiction. Also, the characters are diverse and there are also some interesting activism topics. The ebook of part 1, "By Earth" is currently free on all retailers. https://books2read.com/by-earth

Man, I'm too mentally ill to be a commercial artist, even though I am one. I make these really intense mead labels for my sister in law and I love the things I make for her and we work pretty well together after many years of doing so...but...
She's opening a new tasting room in Portland (good for her!) and they're going to project the label art onto the wall and have it painted as a mural. I'm not involved, but she wants me to sign them. I know I should feel honored, and also that I give up rights to this art by making it for the labels to begin with, but I have the intense weird feels about it.
Like, "I can paint on a wall, why didn't you ask me to do this?" But then, I DON'T actually have experience with murals, so there's every chance I couldn't do a good job and I'm sure she'll hire a good artist (she obviously has good taste), but the mental illness keeps foaming at the mouth about how I've been slighted somehow.

Wilhelm's Portland Memorial Mausoleum Part 2
Find Part 1 here
As I continued to wander the sprawling corridors of this massive homage to the departed, the building's age and lack of maintenance became more apparent; the floors below street-level weren't only darker due to being half underground, but also because the lights didn't work in much of the building.
Tumblr media
I assumed the lights had been turned off to save energy, but I found very few switches that worked. This only added to the desolate and melancholy aura that hung in the air. It's a unique feeling I haven't experienced anywhere else.
Tumblr media
Even on a sunny summer afternoon, the darkness closes in quickly if you get too far from a window.
Tumblr media
Due to being built into a hill above a wetland (water flowing downhill and all), the mausoleum is in a constant battle against water damage. The carpets hold a varying mix of scents, from mold and mildew to strong chemical cleaners to old floral perfume. The hall below smelled like fresh rain, however.
Tumblr media
The lower levels hold some of the oldest crypts and urns, so it's not surprising that the areas less frequently visited are a lower priority on the repair and maintenance list. The sections on higher floors still have sellable spaces and regularly visiting families.
Tumblr media
Although the chapel appears to be a separate building, you can access the chapel basement from the 3rd floor of the mausoleum. These urn rooms were much more intimate than the expansive halls I had just came from.

I notice the floor has been redone in this area somewhat recently. I wonder how long it has been since someone has come to visit these resting souls. I hope they appreciated my company.
Follow for Part 3, where we'll continue on to the deepest and darkest levels (it gets a little spooky)!

Hey! It's our 11th birthday!
@portlandbuttonworks opened as a little storefront on N Killingworth on May 20, 2012 combining my custom pin-back buttons business with a zine distro and our ever growing catalog of pre-made button designs!
In 2016 we moved into a shared warehouse on Bryant and just as we updated our website and moved into a larger browsable shop space, the pandemic hit and we moved back into our North Portland home.
From there we shifted our focus more to zines and books and other catalog orders until the world was able to gather again and needed our custom button services. Last year we renamed the catalog as The Spiral House @spiralhouseshop
While we are unsure of our next move, we are currently pressing buttons and shipping orders from our North Portland home as well as attending zine events and vending at local events.
For this special occasion we are offering 11% off for our 11 years of business. Use coupon code: BIRTHDAY11 on our website for custom or catalog items for shipped or picked up items!

I'm having so much fun with my little patio garden, a friend helped me plant all these beautiful flowers! Trying an orange calla lily this year and its going gangbusters, I'm so excited over it! The begonia is a scarlet begonia and these photos don't do it justice, its stunning, its like neon scarlet! I hope it gets much bigger. The pink geraniums needed some help, they were so sad looking so I carefully fertilized. I'm also trying a small dahlia but its not shown here, it needs some growth. And in a few weeks my tiger lily and hydrangea will be in bloom. I also got two new Adirondack chairs for the patio, they are so comfortable! It still needs some work but I'm pleased and happy with all of it, mother nature is amazing! More photos when the next flowers bloom.

A year ago a few of us Portland tumblr witches with an inclination for animism and folk magic started a group in real life for discussion and sharing of ideas in real life. We stated meeting in public libraries and parks, then in more private spaces. We'd like to have another open meeting at a public library to see if any other folks would like to join us! So, if you might be interested, stay tuned. It is looking like the event is going to be Sunday, January 14th!
