May 26th, 2024 - Gluten-free oreos
Tumblr media Tumblr media

I got some gluten-free oreos. I liked them, but I felt sick after I ate most of them. I shouldn't have eaten so much. Ew.
I only woke up from my nap to have dinner. I'm watching one of the "Fast & Furious" films because mother likes them. I don't even know which one this is.
I also got bubblegum. My plan is so stupid and it would only work in movies. I should try anyway. I lost all my pride and dignity a while ago. Let's just do it and obviously hope for the best.
The coding streak survived for some reason. I'm glad.
Yesterday I listened to "m b v" by mbv. I liked it, but I still think the other albums are better. This is my ranking:
only tomorrow
who sees you
new you
if i am
she found now
in another way
is this and yes
wonder 2
nothing is
In terms of language, I more or less know what they're talking about (but sometimes the grammar is a bit weird for me). But artistically, when it comes to the meaning of the songs... I have no idea of what they're talking about.
I have the same problem with Hope Sandoval. Like okay girl, I don't know what the fuck you're talking about, but I love it and it'll be my new obsession for the rest of my life.
It's the same with Cocteau Twins, but that's the final boss because their lyrics are straight up incomprehensible. But that shit is beautiful.
I thought it was 11 PM. It's 10 PM lol. I'll go paint my nails now. I'm thinking about using two colours, I don't know which ones. Anything to avoid using black every week.
Now that I think about it, those oreos were a bit gross.
I just wanna sleep, and I should do it early because this guy is serving tomorrow. Literally. And he is pissed off.
Rest well.

Imagine getting stranded on a very chilly planet, you and your crew have everything you need and help is coming, you just have to wait out the cold.
Amphibious/reptilian alien is very sluggish from the temperature, and you ask to cuddle and share your mammalian body heat. They're almost alarmed at the offer, but humans are very warm and it's not long before they give in to snuggles.
Alien who very recently started their heat and wanted to reject you, knowing just how erratic their thoughts on you were lately. But they weren't savage, they could be professional with their fellow crewmate, who so kindly offered them their natural warmth for nothing in return. They were cold, you wanted to touch them. How could they ever deny you?
You drape a large blanket over the both of you and almost politely embrace their body, resting your head on their shoulder so your warm exhalations reach their neck. You wince at how initially cold their skin is, but your touch quickly softens them. They practically melt against you, holding you tightly in return.
They try so hard to be good. They bask in your skin against theirs, strength returning with each restrained caress, like you're delivering them back their life. They keep their hands where they know they should be, raking their mandibles against any exposed skin to watch goosebumps prickle in their wake. How soft you are. How precious and giving, how they ache to return your kindness.
Alien who would never let their heat get the better of them and just enjoys what touch you're offering them. But that doesn't mean the entire time they sit with you their mind isn't absolutely overrun with...slightly indecent thoughts. Memories of particularly sweaty fights, that time sparring you had them pinned to the ground, human videos they had researched. It would be so easy, they knew exactly where to touch you. They imagined it over and over, showing you they knew what they were doing, watching your soft little body respond to them the way theirs did so often to you.
Eventually, they get to leave the awful, ice planet. Alien starts looking for any excuse to go someplace cold with you again.

Me: how could we inspire hate in a cosmic horror god if we are so small and insignificant?
Brain: how do people react to a spider in their bed. Or maggots in their fridge?
Me: oh
Me: OH NO

Violette's Boggart
1/ Before the main event in HL, Violette's boggart would be her losing magic. Her mother is a witch but she hadn't shown any signs of magic until she turned 14, she wished to become a witch just like her mother and she was really sad thinking she was born a squib. Finally she got her power and she treasures it so much that she'd try her best to learn hard and catch up with her friends. She didn't want to be magicless again.
After the main event her boggart turned to Victor Rookwood, or more exactly his "inferi" self. She did something she can't forgive herself, and something that she still cannot talk to anyone about it.
Tumblr media
2/ Ridikkulus: When she casts Riddickulus it turn into a training dummy wearing a Rookwood's hat. Is it funny? Maybe... But Violette still cannot overcome that fear...not for now...

So, a fun fact about the missing sub is that it lived in the workshop that my robotics team works out of. And may I say that when you leave a very cool piece of tech completely unsupervised with a group of nerds with the door propped open you bet we gonna crawl all over that shit.
So when I say that sitting alone in that thing as a 5”5 person I felt cramped that’s saying something. Like it’s fucking tiny I can’t express the amount that that thing sucks to be in. There aren’t any seats the floor feels like those foam puzzle piece mats.there’s one computer monitor kinda attached to the wall, and this may have changed for the actual expedition, but there was a gaming controller attached inside.
I have no understanding how they sold that as an experience, it’s terrible to be in there and there’s one Tiny porthole at the front. Like fuck this whole thing is fucked

been thinking about the rabies condition in writing lately, which is a GREAT post about stakes and characterization. basically exploring how if there's a 100% chance a character is doomed, then they can and will do extremely dangerous/damaging/contraindicated things for the slimmest hope of survival. which is one of my Favorite narrative devices
but while we're using health metaphors, i've been thinking about another somewhat complicated means of introducing character stakes, which i'm tentatively calling 'the autoimmune condition' for reasons that are. obvious
the premise itself is simple: the character has Something that they need to survive. they either can't live without this thing or they will lose something vital about themselves if they lose this thing. there is no replacement or alternative for the thing. what's most important are that the consequences for losing it are Extreme, rabies-condition-style
in the real life allegory, this is the immune system. which is great for being alive!
then the problem is introduced when this thing starts killing the character.
the character still needs it to live.
so: there is a 100% chance that you will die if you destroy the thing killing you. if you impair it through other means, there is a 100% chance of consequences, though the severity of those consequences is up to the author. (these are medication side effects in the real life allegory.)
if you do everything you're supposed to then you'll PROBABLY survive, but you're gonna have to play lifelong tug-of-war to balance everything, and you are often going to have to choose between two shitty options. bc there is no alternative.
this is a counterpart to the rabies condition in terms of stakes; with this condition, your character has to make complicated and difficult decisions about what they're sacrificing for their future. it's not the immediate life-and-death stakes of rabies, it's a slow decay instead.
what side effect consequences are they willing to take on?? and what are they NOT willing to take on?? where do their priorities lie in terms of symptom management?? what other solutions are they looking for?? what are they willing to sacrifice??
and perhaps most importantly: what exactly do they need to lose before they'll Accept the side effects / sacrifices that used to terrify them?? how high do the stakes need to be??
at what point is this character going to look back at the choices they've made up to this point, and realize that they no longer recognize themselves??

Immediately forgets everything that happened in June. Uh. I threw a tea party! Finished a knit hat! Did one (1) queer corvid piece! Started playing baldurs gate! Read some good books! SAW SOME SANDHILL CRANES!!!! Found new enrichment in the form of a new walking route! A busy busy month! Didn't read as much as I intended, but I did get to check off five more books on my Reading Books I Own chart so I call that a win.
Tumblr media
The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakranorty ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐- WHAT A FUN BOOK! "Adventure" is the perfect word for this. Yes, it's a trilogy with only one book out, but this also works so well on its own, as individual books SHOULD! It's its own little thing. Wrapped up neat and tidy with little threads to pick up in the future. I had so much fun and the audiobook was a DELIGHT, I want to read it again immediately.
The Novice by Taran Matharu ⭐- This has been sitting on my shelf since its release. It moved homes with me. It will not be doing so again. Bland, generic, poorly written. Proof just because you were an internet success, doesn't mean you don't need an editor. Also proof that publishing is about Luck and Connections. I know goodreads ratings mean Nothing, but come on. Why is this one so high. Did people really enjoy it that much? HOW??
Translation State by Ann Leckie ⭐⭐⭐⭐- Okay. Look. This was not my favorite Leckie novel. In fact it very well could by me least favorite Leckie novel. HOWEVER. Even then, it was still fun and enjoyable. I wish it ended differently, but I still loved all the characters and how they interact. I do want to reread this as well, because I remember enjoying Ancillary Justice more the second time around and I wonder if the same will happen here.
Tumblr media
What Moves The Dead by T Kingfisher ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - A reread! To get ready for What Feasts At Night! Even knowing all the secrets, it's still a perfectly bite sized creepy read. My favorite thing about Kingfishers writing is how even with the darkest subjects she still manages to add humor. And it never seems out of place! It's a great breather for the reader but doesn't detract from the tension. Do not recommend reading this while walking through a field of bunnies.
What Feasts At Night by T Kingfisher ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - I gave What Moves The Dead four stars at my initial read through, so I wonder if this will ALSO change to five stars upon rereading. I had to read the first few chapters twice for them to stick, and ended up switching to the audiobook which was very well done. I really didn't expect another book about Alex Easton, but I'm hooked now to be honest. I mean, stop putting this soldier in Situations, but also. I want to know what other Situations ka gets into. Angus and Miss Potter are adorable.
The library has a few summer reading games with prizes so my reading in the upcoming months will be influenced by those. Someone said there might even be a local bookstore gift package in the mix and I Want That. I do still want to do the Bone Season updated read, if for no other reason than to get rid of those books so I don't have to pack and move them. Other than that, no reading plans. I've read nearly every book that's on the shelf in my bedroom, which, wow, so it's getting harder to choose what to read. I guess that's a good thing! Leaves more room to reread old favorites.

The way the apocalypse had nothing to do with zombies for Joel... the way the world ended for him not because of cordyceps, but because Sarah died... alternatively, the way saving the world had nothing to do with finding a cure or a vaccine, but with Ellie becoming his daughter, making sure that no harm came to her, making sure that she made it through alive and giving her the life and the love she should've always had... excuse me I am EATING GLASS
