"Hm?", my eyes drift over the edge of my lifted drink as I turn in their direction.

"Despair.", he repeats and the guest steps forward...

My mouth tightens around the glass lip mid-sip.

Father's luck will be my death yet.

"Despair.", assures the guest. "Nice to meet you."

The voice is smooth and cultured. The offered hand, rubbery, dry, and extremely pale against my skin, leaves a strange feeling lingering on the palm.

"Ah! Nice to meet you."

Because I was taught not to be rude.

Perhaps a first mistake.

At this declaration Despair pauses, blinking once, thinking hard in his bewilderment.

It suddenly strikes me that he must not hear that a lot.

In the background: our host, run off far, far, away.

I engage emergency-automatic-small-talk mode.

"So, Despair. I've heard so much about you--"

"-- Such as?"

"That . . . . you are well-traveled. And successful."

"I do keep busy.", he affirms.

I could wipe my forehead, but suppress the urge. Try harder, to adopt a stance of unalarm and unhurry, "How did you come to know our host?"

"It was when Trent switched majors, back in College. Did you know that the good man had an interest in artistic cinema?"

"Wow! No, I had no idea he had a creative side…"

"Mmm. Had.

"Of course, Trent never talks about it anymore… doesn't attend the festivals abroad, as he once did.

"But, really, it is better for him this way. After all, no one wants to live like a pauper.", Despair smiles widely, the ghost of a laugh only just escaping the dungeonous, perfect teeth.

I've never fake-smiled so hard in my life.

“Well then. I hope--”, his face, at this one word, turns hard as stone and it makes me want to hide under Trent's fussy leather couch, “…that you. Erm. Enjoy the party. …I suppose I should continue mingling. Oh, there’s--”

“Angelica? Yes, I know her. She’s been doing quite well recently, but don’t ask anything about her adopted child...

"My gift to her was Kawasaki’s disease. They’re still not sure of the extent of the damage, to his heart. From what I’ve gathered, it doesn’t look well.”

Angelica, as if sensing her name spoken, looks towards me.

When she sees who I am with, her gaze darts away as if the very image of Despair were burning hot to her eyes.

I swallow.

“…They do all see me, Teresa. All the ones I’ve gifted.”

My jaw sets. Despite the feeling of crawling unease that Despair oozes, my inherited Scot’s temper flares at his bored recounting of Angelica’s recent pain.

I feel like I want to find someone that he did not yet know, just to spite him. “There’s always--”

“Oh, Isaiah, there. I gifted him years ago. Still wears the wedding ring, though.”

It was as if he could see through my eyes.

Wherever I turn my head to look, Despair has another story to tell: “Li. The doctors suspect that his cancer has returned from its remission. Such a shame. He won’t have long to live if it has come back…just landed his dream job as well. Aina. She’s in love with a woman she can never have. Deeply so. In a lot of pain right now, saw her crying in the kitchen earlier. Samantha. Her brother died this month whilst visiting a friend. Burglar was in the house. Shot him dead. Hasn’t started coming to terms with it, which is why she’s here in the first place. Hector was just disowned by his father…his only parent, it would seem. Mother died in childbirth--”

In that intensely disinterested voice, Despair rattles a descriptive swath through the room, laying bare agony and struggles unshared. Emotions I have no knowledge of nor right to.

My head spins.

I want to shut my eyes, so I do.

My stomach is churning.

…I do not know everyone here, but some of these people are my friends. The Scot in me is fairly easy to raise.

But the Brooklyn accent?

That takes some doing, and without even thinking I find myself mere inches from his ridiculous fucking face…

“Listen to me, you calloused, steaming pile of dog shit.”, I hiss. “At this point I don't care who I speak to next, so long as it isn't--!”

I freeze perfectly still.

“It should arrive fairly soon.

I wish to run from this place, for all the good it will do me...

But from somewhere near the door, a murmur of distraction has started, to which people seem to gravitate.

I can’t see who it is: the crowd knotting, nodding greetings, then, making way for the new guest as they approach us…yet, I note that everyone's gaze angles downwards.

Whoever they are, they must be on the short side.

Despair splutters -- all boredom gone.

Almost pouting.

...In front of us, steps a little girl.

Her skin is warm and very dark…it looks almost as if it glows.

She has the largest eyes I have ever seen on a child: deep and brown.

A lovely round dandelion-top of super-curly black hair is on her head: with sprigs of queen anne’s lace, honeysuckle, and baby’s breath placed carefully at either temple. Her short-sleeve, flutter-hemmed tunic is mellow butter-yellow, with a row of cartoonish daisies printed at mid-riff.

Her stone-washed capri jeans are scuffed, but intact.

Delicate, white, lace-topped socks sprout out of a pair of impossibly bright-red converse high-tops.

Random, sparkly barrettes are affixed to the disheveled, bright white shoelaces...

I’d never seen her anywhere before -- yet, at the sight of her, my eyebrow twitches up and I bark a short laugh of disbelief!

Her bold, bow lips curl into a smirk as she looks up, boring into me with her eyes.

“THERRRRRRE you are! Been lookin’ for you everywhere!!”

She grabs my hand and starts to draw me back through the crowd.

I kind of glaze over a bit.

Her hand feels like sunlight.

I am extremely glad to be taken away, but I worry about how Despair might react if I leave without saying farewell.

I tentatively look back, though my feet move forward just fine, “Uhhhm--”

“Hope!!!”, Despair drew himself up imperiously, addressing the child in a commanding voice. “I was just telling her about the gift she was to receive next week--!”

“Oh, she doesn’t need that anymore.

"Besides, you were with her almost all the time when she was my size.

"It’s my turn now. Otherwise, she’s gonna get too bored!”

No one dares laugh...

But the music, which had been lowered to nearly a whisper at the beginning of the party, turns up loud.

We steadily make our way out into the hallway with the sound of the gathering getting livelier: shuffling steps of people drawing closer together; hoots and hollers and cheerful ‘goodbye!’s.

I don’t think to ask where we’re going...

As we wait for the elevator, I turn towards Hope.

She leans near, gesturing for me to bend down so that she can whisper in my ear.

She cups a long hand, and in a conspiratorial tone, she says to me: “Hmph! I know most of those folk, too!”

We grin as the elevator bell sounds.

Mama and Papa sighed in relief.

“I guess we freaked out for nothing, then…It’s just the first time [Name]’s ever been sick,” Mama played with your hair aimlessly.

“Well, I’d still suggest taking precautions, [Name] is still young, it could be a little tough to get through compared to a more developed body,” the Doctor, the man was called, advised.

“Yes, I’ll get on that. And prepare to have to watch over them for the duration of this, which shouldn’t be long.”

Another sigh from Mama, “But I have a business trip tomorrow…I’ll have to cancel.”

“Videl that trip could make or break your promotion, canceling like that…”

“Well, what other option do we have? Piccolo is unavailable since he’ll be in deep meditation for the week. And Goku, no offense, wouldn’t be the best for [Name] while sick.”

“I could stay home.”

“I know, I know…But I should still be able to work from home for a few days. And I want to make sure my little Sweet Pea is taken care of.”

You wiped at your nose with an arm, sniffing away.

To his surprise, you put up a fight.

You screamed, tugging on his hair, kicking at his face.

“Hey! Calm down!” though your attacks seemed useless, he hardly faltered and ate your hits.

“No! No berry!”

“But you like this kind of berry, that’s why they got it for you.”

There were a few fights like this, then you went from fighting to crying, which broke his heart since it was such a rarity.

“Papa!” you wailed, reaching for him.

“Oh, Sweet Pea…” he grabbed you up, setting you on his leg as he gently rocked you.

You leaned into him, watching as he worked.

“You’re really burning up, huh? Make sure to drink up that water, okay?”

Every few minutes you would sip from your cup, occasionally he would remind you if you zoned out.

You were very miserable the first few days, Pan would help when she could, and Mama would always call.

And then, finally, you woke up one morning feeling energized…well more than you had the past few days.

You called for Papa, who had fallen asleep at the desk. His eyes fluttered open adjusting to being awake.

“How’re you feeling?”

“Happy!”

He smiled, stretching out his arms, “You look better, that’s good!”

“Yes!”

Cape Breton hiker finds inspirational message on mountain

Tenerife Mountain sits on the northern tip of Cape Breton Island and is a popular destination for a hike.

On Sunday, Chad Magee and a few friends spent the day making the challenging climb to the summit when a message written on a tree caught their eye.

"I have to admit, by that time when I saw the message on the tree, I've seen it before, but this day it actually dug in,” Magee said.

“It actually inspired me to put in that little extra bit of effort to get to the top there."

In August 2021, 16-year-old Josh Cochrane was hiking with his father when he wrote the message, “Keep going! It’s 100% worth it.”

The Yarmouth teen knows a lot what it means to keep going through adversity.

"When I was 7, I had Kawasaki Disease. It damaged my heart,” Cochrane explained.

“I have Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which means I could dislocate joints easily. (I’ve had) a lot of health complications throughout my life."

Magee shared a post on social media about the inspirational message he found on the mountain and was contacted by Cochrane’s mother, who told him all about her son and his story.

"His struggles and everything he's going through,” Magee said.

“Also his fundraising that he does. One of which is with PTSD. Being a first responder myself, that definitely struck a chord with me."

As a young man living with autism, who used to be non-verbal, Cochrane has come a long way and he is happy his message has inspired others.

"I hoped that maybe anybody else hiking up to the peak would see it and get a smile out of it or something, but I never expected the response. I'm happy,” Cochrane said.

Thanks to the message, Magee says he’s made a connection and, perhaps, a friendship. He adds he’d be happy to take Cochrane and his family hiking should they return to Cape Breton.

"If he ever comes back this way, I know a lot of spots around here that he might not be aware of,” Magee said. “I can definitely get them out."

In the meantime, Cochrane is looking forward to receiving the Governor General's Sovereign Medal For Volunteers - once COVID restrictions allow.

Eleven years ago, I was hit by a car walking down a road in Oregon. When it came time for the medical bills to be paid, (spine fractured in 3 places, knee completely blown out, 8 days in hospital) and the settlement I was told because I did not carry car insurance, I am considered an uninsured driver. I was stuck with a $25,000 hospital bill, and a $12,000 settlement. People do not believe me when I tell them this was the law at the time. Anyone know if this is still the law in Oregon?""

Mother Tells Nerve-Racking Story About Son's Confusing Diagnosis And Condition

Natasha Durling, the mother of Oliver Durling, shared an unbelievable story about her son. This Canadian boy was struggling with a dangerous and rare disease, as well as measles, at the same time.

The doctors became confused and were trying to figure out the right diagnosis. Luckily, they found it, after 5 long days.

It all started with high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, sore muscles, red eyes and general weakness.

After 4 days, his condition was pretty bad. Oliver was not able to get up, eat or drink. Also, his face and neck got a strange rash.

The boy received vaccinations regularly so the doctors were baffled at what it could be. In addition, there were no visible white spots typically found in the mouth of patients suffering from measles. They put him in a quarantined area, just in case.

Natasha wrote on social media.

“[Despite] his high fever, rash, dehydration and being in absolute agony, he [was] sent home, and I was instructed to give him Tylenol and Benadryl, and if he gets worse to bring him back”

On the next day, the boy’s whole body was covered in a rash. His temperature was still very high, and his lips were swollen and bleeding.

Again, he was treated in the hospital. The doctors attributed the symptoms to a serious virus.

Natasha continued her story:

“At this point, I lose my s**t…I demand that he gets, at the very least, blood work done and get some fluids into his obviously dehydrated body! While providing a urine sample, Oliver starts to panic yelling that he can’t see and that he’s blind, then gets right stiff, shakes and drops in my arms. At this point, the nurse grabs him from me and I grab his IV pole and race to the ICU where he has doctors and nurses trying to figure out what the hell is going on with him.”

After a 5 days agony, the doctors said the boy had Kawasaki disease.

Here’s the description of this rare disease, explained by the Mayo Clinic:

“Kawasaki disease causes inflammation in the walls of medium-sized arteries throughout the body. It primarily affects children. The inflammation tends to affect the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart muscle. Kawasaki disease is sometimes called mucocutaneous lymph node syndrome because it also affects lymph nodes, skin, and the mucous membranes inside the mouth, nose, and throat. Signs of Kawasaki disease, such as a high fever and peeling skin, can be frightening. The good news is that Kawasaki disease is usually treatable, and most children recover from Kawasaki disease without serious problems.”

As the diagnosis was finally known, the doctors did various tests in order to treat the boy.

Natasha wrote:

“He goes through blood infusions and screams in pain all night from his inflamed blood, stomach pain, and inflamed joints, and he throws up several times”

Luckily, his condition improved, and the next morning the rash had disappeared and he was feeling a lot better.

But this is not the end of the story. The most shocking thing was that the urine analysis showed the boy had measles.

Oliver was in quarantine again as the possibly the only patient with measles despite regular vaccination.

Luckily, the boy recovered. His mother wrote:

“Thankfully he’s no longer contagious, and feeling way better! I refused again to go home today, I want to see his blood work and other tests normal before we go anywhere.”

Natasha concluded:

“I have one strong, brave little man! I couldn’t be more proud of him!”
