Writing Notes: Poetry
Tumblr media
Poetry
A type of literature that conveys a thought, describes a scene or tells a story in a concentrated, lyrical arrangement of words.
Poems can be structured, with rhyming lines and meter, the rhythm and emphasis of a line based on syllabic beats.
Poems can also be freeform, which follows no formal structure.
The basic building block of a poem is a verse known as a stanza.
A stanza is a grouping of lines related to the same thought or topic, similar to a paragraph in prose.
A stanza can be subdivided based on the number of lines it contains.
For example, a couplet is a stanza with two lines.
On the page, poetry is visibly unique: a narrow column of words with recurring breaks between stanzas. Lines of a poem may be indented or lengthened with extra spacing between words. The white space that frames a poem is an aesthetic guide for how a poem is read.
Meter
A poem can contain many elements to give it structure.
Rhyme is perhaps the most common of these elements: countless poetic works, from limericks to epic poems to pop lyrics, contain rhymes.
But equally important is meter, which imposes specific length and emphasis on a given line of poetry.
Stanza
In poetry, a stanza is used to describe the main building block of a poem.
It is a unit of poetry composed of lines that relate to a similar thought or topic—like a paragraph in prose or a verse in a song.
Every stanza in a poem has its own concept and serves a unique purpose.
A stanza may be arranged according to rhyming patterns and meters—the syllabic beats of a line.
It can also be a free-flowing verse that has no formal structure.
Rhyme Scheme
There are many different types of rhymes that poets use in their work: internal rhymes, slant rhymes, eye rhymes, identical rhymes, and more.
One of the most common ways to write a rhyming poem is to use a rhyme scheme composed of shared vowel sounds or consonants.
Types of Poetic Forms
Some of literature’s most enduring types of poems.
Blank verse. Blank verse is poetry written with a precise meter—almost always iambic pentameter—that does not rhyme.
Rhymed poetry. In contrast to blank verse, rhymed poems rhyme by definition, although their scheme varies.
Free verse. Free verse poetry is poetry that lacks a consistent rhyme scheme, metrical pattern, or musical form.
Epics. An epic poem is a lengthy, narrative work of poetry; typically detail extraordinary feats and adventures of characters from a distant past.
Narrative poetry. Similar to an epic, a narrative poem tells a story. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s “The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere” and Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” exemplify this form.
Haiku. A 3-line poetic form originating in Japan. The first line has five syllables, the second line has seven syllables, and the third line again has five syllables.
Pastoral poetry. A pastoral poem is one that concerns the natural world, rural life, and landscapes. These poems have persevered from Ancient Greece (in the poetry of Hesiod) to Ancient Rome (Virgil) to the present day (Gary Snyder).
Sonnet. A sonnet is a 14 line poem, typically (but not exclusively) concerning the topic of love. Sonnets contain internal rhymes within their 14 lines; the exact rhyme scheme depends on the style of a sonnet.
Elegies. An elegy is a poem that reflects upon death or loss. Traditionally, it contains themes of mourning, loss, and reflection. However, it can also explore themes of redemption and consolation.
Ode. A tribute to its subject, although the subject need not be dead—or even sentient, as in John Keats’ “Ode on a Grecian Urn”.
Limerick. A 5-line poem that consists of a single stanza, an AABBA rhyme scheme, and whose subject is a short, pithy tale or description.
Lyric poetry. The broad category of poetry that concerns feelings and emotion. This distinguishes it from two other poetic categories: epic and dramatic.
Ballad. A form of narrative verse that can be either poetic or musical. It typically follows a pattern of rhymed quatrains. From John Keats to Samuel Taylor Coleridge to Bob Dylan, it represents a melodious form of storytelling.
Soliloquy. A soliloquy is a monologue in which a character speaks to him or herself, expressing inner thoughts that an audience might not otherwise know. Soliloquies are not definitionally poems, although they often can be—most famously in the plays of William Shakespeare.
Villanelle. A nineteen-line poem consisting of five tercets and a quatrain, with a highly specified internal rhyme scheme. Originally a variation on a pastoral, the villanelle has evolved to describe obsessions and other intense subject matters, as exemplified by Dylan Thomas, author of villanelles like “Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night.”
Imagery
In poetry and literature, imagery is the use of figurative language to evoke a sensory experience in the reader.
When a poet uses descriptive language well, they play to the reader’s senses, providing them with sights, tastes, smells, sounds, internal and external feelings, and even internal emotion.
Blank Verse & Free Verse Poetry
Free verse poetry has been popular from the 19th century onward and is not bound by rules regarding rhyme or meter.
Blank verse poetry came of age in the sixteenth century and has been famously employed by the likes of William Shakespeare, John Milton, William Wordsworth, and countless others.
Unlike free verse, it adheres to a strong metrical pattern.
Mimesis
Copying is something writers usually strive to avoid.
And yet, the literary theory of mimesis says that artists copy constantly, as a matter of necessity.
Does this make their art bad?
Centuries of thinkers from Plato and Aristotle onwards have attempted to answer this question by debating the nature of mimesis.
Onomatopoeia
Usually, how words sound bears no relationship to what they mean.
That’s not true in the case of onomatopoeia, where words sound like what they are. The English language is littered with these mimicking words, from meowing cats to babbling brooks.
In poetry and literature, the onomatopoeic effect is something writers can harness to create vivid imagery without verbosity.
Enjambment
Poetry is a structured literary form, with patterns and rhythms that dictate the flow of verses.
Lineation in poetry is how lines are divided and where they end in relation to a clause or thought. Having a line break at the end of a phrase or complete thought is a regular and expected pattern in poetry.
Poets subvert this expectation by using a technique called enjambment.
Dissonance
The human brain instinctively looks for harmony.
When it is denied harmony, it can create a powerful moment—whether that’s for the purposes of creating tension, capturing inner turmoil, or bringing a bit of levity.
Injects discomfort into text through inharmonious sounds and uneven rhythms.
Consonance
In poetry, rhyme isn’t the only way to introduce memorability and musicality.
Consonance presents poets with the possibility of playing around with the repetition of consonant sounds.
Assonance
Assonance, the repetition of vowel sounds, is distinct from consonance, which refers to the repetition of consonant sounds.
Along with rhyme and alliteration, it is a powerful poetic device that writers can use to make their words stand out.
Alliteration
Sometimes called initial rhyme or head rhyme, alliteration is one poetic device that’s unmissable in our everyday world.
Poets, advertisers and headline writers all regularly take this approach of repeating initial letter sounds to grab people’s attention.
In poetry, it also injects focus, harmony, and rhythm.

Commissions are open!~
Please feel all beckoning possible to reach out with any thought of painting, inquiry or question through either: - Direct message in tumblr or ask inbox - Through gmail mentioned in the card above - Or through commission's google form!
Each way is beautiful and welcoming, and by each conclusion I would be overjoyed to be reached by your company<з
There is additionally written full options of the pricelist:
- Bust of one character down to the chest: 60$ Background for busts is free to be added<з
- Portrait of one or more characters starting from waist: 70$ For background + 10 $ as base cost, prices over are determined by detailing. For each new character + 20 $
- Character (or several) in full growth: 80$ For background + 10 $ as base cost as well, prices over are determined by detailing. For each new character + 30 $
I do portraits in three formats - bust, waist-length and then full-length. They can be various in styling, therefore please pay close attention to the difference in the execution of these formats: - The busts are always more detailed in the character's features. - The atmosphere is more consistent in waist-length paintings. - Full-length drawings are well suited to demonstrate clothing design or particular scene.
Cost of more complex and expressive pieces and backgrounds are increased by tipping after full painting was completed, which I express as an deeply loyal and tactful system - it is absolutely voluntary and happens only at the end of the project, so you have ability to define their cost to your feelings and abilities and nothing over that<зз
Tumblr media
I adore to experiment with styles and learn new tones of this craft - as each meeting is a start of something beautiful, and I desire to create art that is complex and multifaced, but to an important extend I should say that I do not feel comfortable to copy or imitate other's styles of execution and sensuality, and a lot of expressions and detailing in my work are sudden and stands in variability - art is an journey and yet I would love to share this journey with you;з
Oh, and you have read almost everything, thank you so much!o///o And also there, under the cut, is described general process of work and how we conclude payment.
How do we work on an order?
Please, once again - feel free to contact via Tumblr, mail, google form or ask inbox for any questions you may acquire!~
After I discuss the content of the painting with you and receive additional materials (photo of the person that is drawn, or references that are close to what you would like to see in particularly), I start creating the first sketch.
In accordance with the request, I make a sketch of the future painting, which will contain all its important elements and an approximate color scheme that we will use. At this stage, you can freely make your amendments, and when the content suits you, I will ask you for an advance payment of half the cost of the work without additional prices of background or detailing.
After that, work on the portrait will begin. Its duration varies on several factors - to a greater extent on the volume and complexity of the work itself, as well as on my own workload with other projects.
After completing the portrait, I will send you its version in lowered quality - after you familiarize yourself with it (there is also possible some edits - of tones and colors, elements of shading, character's features and general small details), and after you pay the rest of the amount you shall receive the final result of our artwork! ~

Appreciate the tag!
Last song: The Garden by The Crane Wives. "The Devil knows my name" is such a brilliant line.
Purple: Always loved purple but that love only deepened after seeing it on the asexual flag. Plus, red and blue are often thought of as opposites and I like the idea of opposites making something together.
Last Book: There's Someone Inside Your House by Stephanie Perkins. Really underrated book, very well written, Perkins really knows how to write a creepy scene. Netflix was going to make a show based on it. I saw the trailer and words failed to describe the complex mix of anger and disappointment spiralling within me.
Last Movie: The Muppet's Christmas Carol. I firmly believe that this was the way Charles Dickens wanted his story told. If I had a time machine I would kidnap Dickens so he could witness the masterpiece he never got to see.
Last Show: Secret level. The animation in each episode is breathtaking. Favourite episode was the D&D one.
Sweet/spicy/savoury: Probably savoury.
Last thing I Googled: Fixes for a glitch in a game. I was not successful.
Current Obsession: I'm between obsessions at the moment but I can feel Jujutsu Kaisen calling me back...
Looking Forward to: Playing Hades 2! Can it please come to console soon?!
This was fun!
@vvanillavveins @ratkingpirate @pletzelstein you are under no obligation, please feel free to ignore.
Ten people I’d like to know better!

Last song: god games cus wah epic is so cool and I can’t wait for the last saga
Favourite color: despite common believe it is not Pink. My favourite color is yellow. Everything in my life must be yellow
Last book: the haunting of hill house, (still haven’t finished it:,) )
Last movie: look back! (Watched it together with my brother)
Last tv show: wel the newest helluva boss episode just came out so I watched that (that’s a YouTube series I GEUSS but it counts to me)

Sometimes I forget how romantic Chinese is then today I recalled we have a phrase for people that grew up together and, sometimes, fell in love with each other. And the phrase is green plums and bamboo horse, meaning we used to throw plums and ride bamboo horse together as children. Isn't this is just overwhelmingly beautiful... and I don't even realize because it's such a common phrase.

i dont even like sonelise. i have several criticisms of how the whole romance thing was written and i agree that the kiss scene was kinda weird and unnecessary and the writers should have found another way for sonic to be brought back to life. but the way so many people talk about them makes me go "oh heres a guy who doesnt actually know what happens in sonic 06"
like so many people portray elise as this weirdo whos obsessed with sonic and say that sonic hates her and thinks shes creepy. but they were friends?? sonic cared about her just as much as she cared about him? and the way people say she was obsessed with him and trying to force him to date her or whatever.. there was literally a cutscene in sonics story where the topic of sonic leaving once all this is over comes up and while elise was upset at the idea of not seeing sonic again she wasnt gonna force him to stay with her and even told him that its ok?? theres probably more i could say but idk brain not working

never thought i'd say it. not happy about gay sex
#look. some of it might not be as bad as it seems.#i don't have context or all the facts i haven't watched it yet#maybe this 'bathroom scene' is just a precursor for a later callback#but like. jesper had a one night stand or something with wylan and FUCKING FORGOT ABOUT HIM???#real cute real romantic. /s#the hypersexual bi man trope!! the unnecessary sexualization of queer relationships!!!!#like there's nothing wrong with stories about relationships like this! to me it's the fact that it's being applied to wesper!#a relationship which i enjoyed bc of the slower building of care and knowledge and trust and meaning and all that sap shit#these writers do not know how to show queer characters' sexualities without making them have sex.#jesper just forgot about the prince who fell into the wrong story dude i'm gonna be sick#of all the ways they could have written jesper and wylan's pre-SoC history........bruh#listen wesper might have been the least developed of the SoC relationships but holy shit it was better than this#jesper wylan get behind me sweethearts#idk how to describe why it feels so hurtful. it just feels like something has been taken from that story#shadow and bone netflix spoilers#sab spoilers#s&b spoilers#delete later#this isn't like SEX BAD GAY SEX BAD. it just has me going like. who are these guys. these are different guys.#they are doing strange things that the people they claim to be would not. this story has been altered in a way that makes me feel it less#if you enjoy it still fine. but for me it detracts.

Ughhhhhhh I hate writing and I hate not writing and I hate myself
#nearly bought a digital typewriter today. actually i DID buy a digital typewriter today. officially yes i have bought a digital typewriter.#the money for the digital typewriter has left my account but i have emailed them to cancel the order because i can't in good faith buy#a digital typewriter when i don't fucking WRITE#i thought it might help me get back into it. distraction free and while allowing me to not judge my own writing#and be continuously editing while i write and going 'i'm crap i'm crap i'm crap no one will ever read this and if they do they will think#that i'm garbage and that i should feel bad etc etc etc'#but it's too expensive and i have the feeling i wouldn't even like or use the thing once i got it#because the IDEAS! the ideas aren't coming to me. or rather they are but none of them seem to stick#i feel underconfident in writing any of them#and then i have old projects that i've always wanted to get back to like the tennis romance thing but SO much has changed since i first#started drafting it. like i don't even know if i like the main couple anymore. i kind of want to put both of them with different OCs of min#but it'd switch up the WHOLE story if i had a different cast#in fact most of the problem lies in the fact that i have this long-running bedtime story i tell myself every night with lore#and a massive cast of characters that i switch out depending on who i'm most interested in right now and every so often i incorporate new#themes and ideas and motifs and plot points sometimes based on media i've been watching because it's MY bedtime story and it doesn't matter#if i plagiarise in my own brain. but then obviously i can't plagiarise in real life#and none of my bedtime stories are GOING anywhere. sometimes i only get through a scene or two before i fall asleep#all of which means my bedtime story is not so much a sweeping epic novel but a sitcom with way too many characters#most of which are werewolves to be honest and sometimes for my own wish fulfilment one of them will walk out of my head#and take care of my problems for me by lending me £1million or murdering my best friend's ex. in my mind obviously#so it's like. it's a case of getting in there and annexing off the stuff i think i can use#it's like yeah i've definitely written several romance novels in my head in the process of this but does it matter if they're IN my HEAD#to be honest i feel like my main strength is in creating characters. like i have this one family of werewolves i've been slowly but surely#adding members to since i was like 16. maybe younger? no yeah i think i made the first one when i was 12#they're compelling to ME anyway. i care about them. it's just PLOTS. i can't plot#if a book could just be a lot of dialogue and sex scenes and silly moments and character studies i'd be alright#i also can't describe settings. don't ask me to because i can't#and now i'm just annoyed with myself because i sat down at my laptop to try to write and instead i'm here complaining about how i don't wri#and if i had the digital typewriter... i mean i'd probably still be doing this i'd just no longer have £300#i don't have the £300 anyway. i hope to christ they refund my card i'm a fucking idiot

trying to figure out character voices for my ocs and I think the one I have the clearest picture of rn is taituk. they speak…not quite stiffly maybe but definitely a tad formal. more connective words & full sentences than most people use when speaking. they’ve got the admirable habit of just letting silence fall until they’ve thought of the right thing to say, very little uhming or use of other filler words. they tend to be overly specific rather than vague—e.g., instead of saying something is rare or common, they might try to give a numeric indication of how rare or common it is. they talk quite slowly and quietly, but can make themself heard if so desired. absolutely hate shouting. they prefer to speak calmly, and if they’re in an emotional situation they will wait to compose themself until they know their voice will be level. because of this they can seem emotionless to the untrained eye, but they’re just good at hiding/repressing them lol

The Incredible Hulk (1968) #246
#I just like this little ‘out of sight out of mind’ moment#though it is actually interesting to me that the narration then describes as that the Hulk ‘lost interest in his buried enemies’#the concept of a scene of which the Hulk genuinely fully forgets about something as soon as it’s out of his sight is not far-fetched#there’s been stories in which he does very much forget stuff immediately after it happened#like they just had no staying power in his mind#and I wouldn’t say that that’s necessarily been heavily tied to his interest level#like it’ll be written that he goes through this experience that teaches him a lesson about friendship or something#but then the story ends on the note that the Hulk forgot all about that experience as he was walking away#and his memory issues are used to stunt his character development#as to then justify keeping the character in the same place and evolving him very slowly#and that he can forget things that do matter to him is interesting to me#even last issue he actually nearly forgot that he had come to Gamma Base to get back Jarella’s body#so it’s not like he wouldn’t forget things he’s not interested in#but he also very much forgets things he is interested in as a part of his complex intellectual disability#is serious memory issues and difficulty retaining information#which is just one piece of the convoluted puzzle as to why the Hulk’s life sucks#but while I don’t necessarily expect it#I think an interesting story would be tackling that issue head-on in therapy#in a way that’s distanced from moral lessons about the specific information like that he needs to remember he shouldn’t do certain things#but if Samson just focused on trying to teach the Hulk techniques for remembering things#that the Hulk could then apply to information of his choosing#marvel#bruce banner#my posts#comic panels
