Finding Files using Telltale Inspector

Some people who have had success with swapping may have noticed the trend where you have all the files with your swap character’s name on it – but there are clearly some files not there. Maybe they don’t have any ptables, or maybe you’ve done your swap and parts of your character are just missing. You can’t find any files you missed and you’re wondering where they must be if you don’t have them already.

And the reason this happens is because your swap character normally uses reused assets. They don’t have their own ptables because they are using someone else’s, or they don’t have unique textures for their eyes because they share a file with other characters.

You can trial and error your way into finding which assets they are using, or you could try using the Telltale Inspector Tool created by Lucas in the Telltale Modding Group. (massive brain on this bloke – if you want to donate to him for his major efforts, it would definitely be appreciated) The readme and information on the tools can be found >>here<< and the most current release can be found >>here<<.

At the time of making this mini-tutorial, the most current version is ALPHA 1.0.2 – the information I’m presenting here and the screenshots used relate to this release, things may look or work differently in future.

The tool itself is capable of a lot more than I’m making note of here, and can be used to edit the information within the files if you know what you’re doing… I’m only giving a very layman’s explanation of one use of it to look at file information. Below you will find a very simple set of directions on using the Inspector tool to open props to find a character’s ptables, and then opening a character mesh to find the associated textures.

Ptables and Animations

For example, let’s say we want to figure out what ptables Carley uses in season 1, and we notice that she doesn’t have any ptables in any of the data archives. We therefore have to find out whose ptables she is using if we want her to have an animated face during swaps.

First of all, we want to use Telltale Explorer to export out her prop file (save it somewhere handy so you can find it again later), and from there we can use Lucas’ Telltale Inspector to look at it properly.

1. Run the TelltaleInspector.exe, and click the [Open] drop down menu and select [Open Prop]

2. There will be another drop down menu that says [Select], we want to select the game where this prop file came from – in this case we need to select [The Walking Dead: Definitive Series]

3. Press the [Select] button to confirm you have selected the correct game

4. You should now have the interface for prop files from that game, but to look at the specific file we have previously exported using the Telltale Explorer, we need to click on [Import Property Set]

This should open up an explorer window where you need to direct the Inspector to the prop file you want to open.

5. Once you have successfully loaded the prop file, you need to click on the [>Properties] sub menu to expand the information shown at the bottom of the window. The information about phonemes is right near the bottom of the list as shown here when hovered over:

Click on the [Modify Handle Value] on the right column next to where the phoneme information was shown. A new window should open, and here we can see the name of the phoneme file that her default state is drawing from. In this case, we can see Carley is using Lilly’s ptables.

However, I will note that in other seasons of the game, this same information can be seen in a different location but with the same 5 steps leading up to it… for example, in A New Frontier, if you wanted to know which ptables and animation files are used on Javier’s father when he appears in flashbacks near the end of the game, you could look into the sk61_salvador305.prop.

Here we can see that his “Skeleton Face” is wd300GM – this means he uses the ptables and animations with this name. I assume the name implies “Walking Dead, Season 3, Generic Male”, I don’t know if that’s accurate, but what matters is that you now know it’s these generic files that he uses.

And if you want to look for a minor character in The Final Season, like the rancher who was taking care of baby AJ, the same situation applies here.

Her skeleton face is the same as Lilly’s in season 4, and therefore when Rancher Helen doesn’t have her own files to load, she is loading Lilly’s ptables and animations.

Meshes and Textures

Let’s say we have tried to do a swap, but for some reason part of the swapped character isn’t loading. A common one that can happen is characters having missing eyes, but it could be something like missing hands or missing hair if it turns out we are swapping a character who uses a texture that is not named in the same manner as their mesh.

Since it has been a problem I’ve seen a few times, let’s use Kenny in season 2 as an example. If you try swapping him into another season without knowing what files he uses which are not named with “kenny202” at the start, he won’t have eyes or hands. And since Kenny in season 2 is one mesh called “sk54_kenny202.d3dmesh”, we can use the Telltale Inspector tool to see what textures we are missing.

1. Run the TelltaleInspector.exe, and click the [Open] drop down menu and select [Open D3DMesh]

2. There will be another drop down menu that says [Select], we want to select the game where this prop file came from – in this case we need to select [The Walking Dead: Definitive Series]

3. From here we need to click on [Open File] and an explorer window will open – we need to direct it to the mesh we want to look at.

4. And now we should have all the relevant information about the selected mesh.

What we are particularly interested in is the list of “Mesh Textures” shown at the bottom. Here we can clearly see the texture files that aren’t named consistently, and what we likely would miss without prior experience or knowledge of the character files. Aaaaand because I have the opportunity to share this little titbit, if you have tried editing textures, or simply swapping textures to see the results – you may encounter some instances where you simply wonder “I thought this would have changed? Why didn’t it?”, or alternatively “I changed this, why did this also change?” Here’s my contribution to fun trivia that I found myself quite some time ago, but now I can show it with the Inspector.

Chapter 6: When We Have Hope

They sit around the fire, eating a helping of beef jerky as the sun sets in the west. Laughter floats around, lifting their spirits.

“You can’t be serious,” Y/N questions. “The two of you went broke in just six months? That’s gotta be a record.”

“Hey!” Luke holds his hands up in surrender. “I never said it was gonna be a profitable business!”

“I’m pretty sure businesses are intended to be profitable no matter what, but whatever makes you feel better about yourself!”

Luke rolls his eyes and throws a twig in her direction. “At least I gave it a try.” He sits for a second, reminiscing on his time before the world went to shit. “What would y’all have done if you coulda started a business.”

Y/N answers without a second thought. “A bookstore.”

“What, like Borders?”

She shakes her head. “Naw, definitely just a small town bookstore. Maybe one with a little cafe.” She hugs her knees up to her chest and looks up at the sky. “The place would have been like a second home, I’m sure.” She looks down towards Clementine, who’s still chewing on some jerky. “What about you, Clem?”

She takes a moment to think before she swallows her food. “I’ve always really liked drawing, so maybe an art store?”

Y/N chuckles at her response. “I can definitely see that. Our stores could be neighbors.”

Clementine smiles at that idea. “That would be really nice.” She then smiles at Y/N mischievously. “But I’d steal too many of your books.”

Luke butts into the conversation. “Don’t be givin’ away your strategy already! Now she won’t ever let you in!” He laughs as he finishes his sentence.

Y/N holds a finger up, silencing Luke. “Well wait just a second. How about, you can take books, as long as you make some drawings for my store? It could definitely do with some art to offset the plain walls.”

Clem is now beaming as she laughs between her words. “You’ve got a deal.” She holds her hand out towards Y/N, who takes it and shakes it firmly. 

“Now I feel like I’m bein’ left out on purpose…” Luke complains, feigning disappointment. 

“Well maybe you should think up some better business models!” Y/N teases. “You’re just too high risk to make deals with, what with your track record and all.”

Luke rolls his eyes for the umpteenth time today. “Yeah, yeah… I’ll show you, just you wait. You’ll be clambering to make business deals with me in no time.” At that he lays back with his hands behind his head to look up at the constellations forming in the night sky. He traces them with his eyes, losing count of the stars almost instantly. “Y’know the one good thing that came out of all of this? No matter where you are, the stars are always bright. No city lights or smog to drown them out.”

Y/N and Clementine lay down too to look at the stars. They lay in silence for a while, just the three of them and the stars looking back at them. But like all good things, it comes to an end when they hear a rustling in the bushes. All three survivors sit up instantly and reach for their weapons. Silhouetted in the last rays of the sun, they make out a singular walker. Y/N sighs as she stands up and whispers, “I got this.”

She walks a bit closer to the walker and whistles at it in a quick tune to gain its attention. Once it’s lumbering towards her, she assumes a low stance, waiting for just the right moment. And when that moment comes, she shoves the walker up against a tree, holding it back with her forearm against its chest, while she sinks her knife into the side of its skull. The body instantly goes limp and crumbles to the forest floor. Y/N bends down to wipe her blade on the grass then starts the short walk back to the fire. As she sits back down, she sighs again. “It’s getting late. I can take our first watch.”

“I think I’ll keep ya company a little while longer,” Luke offers, though it sounds more like a fact of a matter than an offer. “You can head off to bed if you feel like it, Clem.”

The girl yawns as she trudges towards the tent. Luke must have seen her exhaustion already. “Just don’t talk too loud, okay?”

Luke chuckles a bit and mutters out, “You got it, kiddo,” as Clementine passes by and disappears into the tent. He looks back towards Y/N to find her face more stoic now. “Well, that lurker sure brought down the mood, didn’t it?”

Y/N scoffs, her face unchanging. “Yeah, they have a tendency to do that.”

The two are sitting a few feet apart, a campfire between them. Luke stands to grab another piece of wood to add to the fire to keep it going, and finds a seat much closer to Y/N than his previous one, but still leaves a gap. He keeps his voice low like he promised Clem he would. “I’m missing that bed already, that sleeping bag won’t even come close.” 

Y/N chuckles under her breath. “I swear, you don’t think of anything else except a comfy bed. You’re just gonna keep disappointing yourself.”

Luke mimics her chuckle. “I guess I’m just a hopeful person. Ain’t nothin’ wrong with that.”

“You’re talking about hope so much, it’s gonna start rubbing off on me.”

“Well I would hope so!” He catches himself before he starts talking too loud and returns to a whisper. “We become better people when we have hope. Just like I hope we find a bed again soon.”

“See, you’re just proving my point! All you think about is finding a bed. There are better things to hope for, y’know?”

“Oh yeah? Like what?”

She’s silent for a moment as she pulls a knee up to her chest. “Safety. I hope we find a place where we feel safe. Yeah, we’ve survived this long. But, I don’t know how much longer I can hold out. I’m getting tired.” She casts her gaze down at the fire. “But, I guess I’m doing better now than I was last week.” The corners of her lips lifted in a pained smile. For a second time today, her eyes gloss over with tears. But she blinks it away and takes a deep breath. And as she calms down, she feels a hand rest on her shoulder. She just slightly lifts her gaze from the fire to come face to face with Luke.

His charming smile immediately speeds up Y/N’s heart rate, so much so that she hopes he can’t hear it over the crackling of the fire. And it speeds up even more as he says, “I’m doin’ a lot better now, too.” Y/N stares at him for a moment, trying to process the implication of his words. But then Luke backtracks as he pulls his hand away and rubs the back of his neck, “And, uh, so is Clem. I think she likes having another girl around again.”

Y/N recovers quickly, pushing the feeling of a blush to the back of her mind. “You miss having another guy around, then?”

Luke winces internally. Another guy would mean competition, but I can’t tell her that! Think, Luke, think! “Not particularly. When there’s a lot of men around, it leads to a sort of… power struggle. It’s happened quite a few times in my groups.”

Y/N leans towards him a bit in jest. “And let me guess. You were always one of the guys fighting for power.”

Luke almost looks offended as he puts his hands up in defense. “Hey now! It’s not ‘cause I’m greedy or anything. Other people just… don’t do what’s right sometimes.” He stops for a moment, but continues when she looks at him expectedly, waiting for more explanation. “It’s a good thing, knowing that Carver is dead and can’t hurt people anymore. He killed Alvin in cold blood. And Reggie. And a lot of other people. And even before all that, I knew he had evil in him. I can’t just stand back and let someone like that lead people.” Pain passes through his face as he lets out a heavy sigh.

This time, Y/N puts a hand on his shoulder. “You’re a good man, Luke. And you do good by people. Please, don’t ever doubt that.” As she moves closer to him, she sees a tear fall from his chin. And then, she acts without another thought and pulls him into her, as he did for her just a few hours before. Time grinds to a halt as she holds him and as he grips her shoulders in return. He doesn’t sob, and he doesn’t shake, but she can feel every ounce of emotion as it crashes down on her in waves. With every breath he exhales, she holds him tighter, refusing to let him feel alone. And it’s true. They aren’t alone.

-

“We’re heading East, right?” Clem questions as she looks up towards the sun, shielding her eyes with her hat and hands. 

Y/N smiles to herself, feeling a bit of pride that Clem picked up on using the sun for directions so quickly. “Yup, long as it’s still morning and you’re looking towards the sun, that’s East.” She keeps her eyes on the trail ahead. Well, trail is an overstatement. It’s more just a narrow area between the trees that seems to grow less brush. “Lots of fallen branches here, watch your step,” she calls out as she carefully places one foot in front of the other. Clem follows close behind with Luke a few strides back. 

Luke winces and clutches his leg where he’d been shot a few months before. “A storm’s gonna be rolling in soon, we need to find somewhere safe before it hits.”

Y/N chuckles up ahead. “And how do you know that? Is the farm boy a weather boy now?”

“Haha, very funny,” he says dryly, though his lips curl up at the edges. “Old wound is acting up is how I know.”

“What, your ribs?”

“Naw, gunshot to the leg.”

Her eyes widen for just a second. “And how’d that one happen?”

“Some angry Russian.”

Now Y/N turns around in disbelief, still walking backwards. “How many people have you pissed off, exactly?”

Luke exhales a small laugh. “More than I’d like, I’m sure.” 

She keeps walking backwards, maintaining eye contact with him. “Wow, I thought you were such a nice guy, Luke! But with all these stories you’re telling me, I’m starting to doubt my own judgment.”

He smirks at that comment. “Well, that’s not what you were saying last night…” He trails off as he realizes what it just sounded like he said. “I mean- you seemed to think I was pretty good… I mean as a person, I’m a good person. I’m gonna go ahead and shut up now.” He feels a blush spreading across his chest and up his neck. 

Y/N laughs at Luke’s expense as she says, “No, please keep going. I want to see how deep you dig your own–” She’s cut off as she falls backwards onto the forest floor, bushes rustling from the impact.

Even with all the self-restraint in the world, Luke can’t help the snort that he lets out at Y/N’s misfortune. Eventually, that snort turns into a full blown laugh as he finds himself clutching his stomach, laughing through the pain of his previously broken rib. Even Clementine is having a hard time controlling her laugh, covering her mouth as her chuckles slip through.

“Oh yeah, ha ha, very funny!” Y/N calls out as she sits up. “Laugh at the fallen person, how original.” As her companions continue to laugh, she lays back down with her arms spread out, soaking in the sun that sneaks through the leaves. But her relaxation is interrupted as Luke stands over her, offering a hand. It takes all her willpower to hide a mischievous grin as she takes it and instead of using it to stand, uses all her strength to bring him down with her. The bushes rustle once again, giving way to his weight.

Luke raises his head from the bush, twigs and leaves caught in his hair. He takes a moment to spit out a twig that found its way into his mouth. He gets his own mischievous grin as he says, “Well, now you’re askin’ for it!” 

Y/N tries her best to scramble out of the bushes, barely gaining some footing before Luke pulls her back by the wrist. This time, as she falls, she falls right into Luke, elbow slamming into his abdomen, just barely grazing the poorly healing rib. Luke grinds his teeth at the pain and squeezes his eyes shut, feeling the instant regret. Upon hearing a snicker above him, he peeks an eye open and comes face to face with Y/N. And it’s really face to face. If he had to guess, he’d say 4 inches away nose to nose. Luke’s words get caught in his throat when he tries to say something, not even really knowing what he was gonna say in the first place. Before he can figure it out, Y/N is rolling off of him onto the forest floor.

As she stands, Y/N turns to face Luke, making a point to laugh at him still laying in the bush. “Wow, it’s much more fun to be the one laughing.” Luke rubs at his neck as a blush spreads across his cheeks, an action that feels way too common now. This time, Y/N holds out her hand. “Don’t get any ideas now, I think we’ve had enough bush to skin contact for the day.” 

Luke chuckles at her nonchalance and takes her hand, pulling himself up with a small ache in his rib. When he’s finally back on solid ground, he clutches his rib and groans. “Damn, you got me good.”

Clementine peeps up as she continues their walk. “I think you did that to yourself, Luke.”

“Hey now, don’t go picking sides, it ain’t fair!” Luke calls after her, readjusting his backpack before following.

“Well I think it’s plenty fair,” Y/N offers before saying more quietly to Luke, “But I am sorry… Is it hurting bad?”

Her concern has Luke’s lips curling up into a smile. “Naw, just a little irritated, it’ll pass.” He glances at her to see the concern clear in her eyes. Before his gaze can linger too long, he’s nudging her along after Clem. “Well let’s get a move on, don’t wanna get caught in that stor–” 

Crack.

All three of them hit the forest floor immediately, as if their bodies realized it was a distant gunshot before their minds did. 

Crack. Crack.

Y/N is the first to speak among them. “Fuck, how close was that?”

“Not too close,” Luke answers, “But definitely too close for comfort. Sounds like they’re the way we came from, so let’s keep moving.” He’s the first to stand, the other two following soon after. “Let’s move quick, and let’s move quiet.” “Don’t have to tell me twice,” Y/N whispers. Before she follows on the path, she looks back towards the way they came, a bad feeling in the pit of her stomach. It’ll be okay, she soothes herself. Or at least, I hope it will be.

I'll try to be more consistent, but there are no promises cause of how my schedule for this next semester is looking. But don't give up on me! Cause I'm not giving up on this fic :)

I AM ASKING YOU ABOUT YOUR ZOMBIE AUS 🤲🤲🤲🤲 I WANT TO HEAR ABOUT THEM !!!!!!!!!!!! i looooove a good zombie au

okok so both my riptide and pd one are heavily inspired by two different zombapoc video games,, being telltale's walking dead video games and the last of us. buuut i've put a lot of original thoughts and ideas into them and i. love them so much ^__^

the riptide one is pretty messy but the PD one is the one im prouder of :D (both AUs have heavy spoilers for both campaigns)

Riptide

-basically, this AU is inspired by the dynamic of Lee and Clementine from the first walking dead game, but it's branched out a lot further than that.

-at the start of the zombie apocalypse, Arlin teamed up w/Drey and Finn under Captain Rose, and they all formed a lil survivor group (rest of the black rose pirate are there too-- minus chip.)

-when the trio's scavenging through a neighborhood, Chip manages to steal from them, and Arlin's the first one to catch him. Chip, being himself, thinks Arlin is insanely cool and basically makes him adopt him.

-essentially the entire AU follows Arlin trying to find Chip's parents, while Rose is moving the group north through the city to reunite with his lover (and external evidence points to Chip's parents potentially being up North too, in one of the big survivor bases).

-all is fine until, yk. zombies attack them. but these are more distorted, creepier zombies, and they work in more of a coordinated spooky hivemind instead of being the typical braindead zombies as is typical of twd/twd-inspired stuff.

-rest of it vaguely follows the plot of the hole in the sea but. zombies.

-essentially, ten or so years later, Chip appears in Featherbrooke, a navy-ran (the navy still exists here don't ask) base that Jay lives in. And then it's like Origins but. zombies.

-Chip convinces Jay to join him on the road while also talking big about how he's out searching for the old Black Rose group, and is also convinced that Finn Tidestrider could create a cure for the zombies.

-gillion fucking Shows Up.

-etcetc. stuff happens.

-basically, the dynamics here are heavily inspired by the TWDG series, but grew and branched out etc. Chip and Arlin are kind of inspired by Clementine and Lee,, Chip and Ollie are kind of like Clementine and AJ,, etc.

-also. Drey is immune. He gets bit the last time that Chip ever sees him which is why Chip thinks that he's dead, but. nope ^__^ this is also why he's kept in prison by the navy, but also kept largely a secret.

-The Ferins in general in this au are all entirely fucked up and have weird connections to immunity/resistance against. becoming zombies.

^^^- Jay got sent out with Chip as a spy because he kept talking about Finn and finding a cure (+ Jayson also has the knowledge of Drey, etc.) and basically, Jayson thinks that finding a cure could help cure Ava, who died to a zombie bite around 5 years ago.

PD

I ACTUALLY HAVE A LONGFIC OF THIS ONE IN THE WORKS. BUT IT'S TAKING ME A SECOND. it's inspired by TLOU but my TLOU knowledge is actually pretty lackluster </3

-basically, the barebones of this AU is that it's TLOU. Mark is like Joel, Dakota is like Ellie, and Ashe is like Sarah.

-Instead of straight up zombies, it's demons.

-Superpowers and superheroes still exist in this AU, but they are definitely pretty different.

-The apocalypse started when Ashe summoned the trickster, killing their mother etc., but wasn't able to push the trickster back. The chaos zone opened which caused the world to fall to ruin.

-People live in safe zones put together by WATCH, and are all heavily discouraged from leaving due to the. yknow. posessions.

-William is "dead" at the modern day of the AU. He and Ashe were friends before the end of the world, but William was killed by Ashe/The Trickster.

-The closer parallel to Riley is Katori/"rooftop girl",, this part of Dakota's backstory is still pretty similar.

-The AU actually starts when Mark is tasked by Overlord to smuggle "cargo" across Prime, said cargo being Dakota.

- The Overlord is doing all that weird human experimentation shit like in canon, but this time is trying to combine human and demon DNA for the purpose of finding a "cure"/ a way for people to resist being posessed.

-Around the same time, Vyncent still got isekai'd. As one does. Cantrip robbed him on his first day in Prime because I think that's funny.

-Tide is a hero in the Rockfall safe zone, who adopts and mentors Vyncent and William when they first show up.

The fact Lee sees a family portrait of her family..(black parents) the fact Clem WAS CONSTANTLY REFERRED TO AS LEE'S DAUGHTER AND THAT WAS PART OF THE GAME MULTIPLE TIMES B/C THEY WERE INTENTIONALLY MEANT TO LOOK ALIKE. Hi PI, I read your post where you wrote that you are tired and that anyone with questions can turn to the Telltale Modding Discord on Github, but I'm having trouble getting any responses and I even asked GdaTyler on YouTube. I'm not asking about model swaps, but how would one know which characters are borrowing which phonemes from whom for model swaps? Carley, for example, somehow has no phonemes. Does she borrow them from Lilly or Katjaa? Like Mariana from season 3 borrows hers from Clementine?

Sorry to hear you didn’t get a response when you asked, unfortunately some things seem to just get missed depending on who is active/online at the time of something getting posted. But I do have an answer for you, Carley uses Lilly’s ptables. As for how to figure that out… the original way was trial and error, but I’m working on a mini-tutorial currently on how to find this information out without all the trial and error.

But since you have seen the server before, I can tell you that it does have a list of what characters are rehashes of other characters and share some or all of their ptables/animations… there is a pinned message with all of the gathered information for The Walking Dead: The Definitive Series in this particular channel:

Chat > Projects > Batu’s Modding Cave

There are quite a few pinned messages there, but trust me, if you scroll for a bit you’ll find the whole list that shows all the characters that share some or all of their base files.

For example, these characters are all sharing files in some way:

Ben, Larry, Marcus, Chet

Ergo, Larry is the first major character introduced and he has the most ptables. Ben is introduced afterwards and he has less ptables – some overlap with how Larry’s ptables are named and some don’t. Ben will use his own ptables first, but he doesn’t have any “happy” ptables, so when he is meant to be happy in a scene, he’s borrowing from Larry’s ptables. But for characters like Chet or Marcus who are not major characters, they may be drawing from Larry or Ben’s ptables as needed.

This is of course still a process of problem solving to a degree, but seeing the list will at least help you narrow down where to start.

finally decided to play through (most of) the telltale walking dead definitive series

s1 thoughts - the strongest (so far) that I've played through, buggy/finicky at a handful of parts but had a good narrative, storytelling flow & enjoyable characters despite their flaws

400 days - underwhelming in the grand scheme, was definitely cool to have individual episodes dedicated to new characters but none of them mattered aside from bonnie, who still didn't matter depending in your s2 choices

s2 - a slight step down from s1, as the ending felt extremely rushed. enjoyed being able to mold and craft clem's personality depending on what decisions you do/don't make, but was annoyed at how the majority of the season was filled with full functioning (for the most part) adults making the 11 year old girl do everything

s3/the new frontier - mixed bag on this one, as this season very clearly is split amongst itself between family drama and survival drama. it was entertaining nonetheless, and while i do absolutely adore Kate/David's characters conceptually, the shock value of killing mariana and then wasting the potential of the side cast was rough. the flashbacks for jane/kenny didn't honor the characters as well as i would have liked imo, but the flashbacks we got of clem trying her absolute hardest to survive with AJ were some of the best in the series (so far)
